MACDONALD - Edna Dorinda (nee Wegner) MacDonald was born on January 21, 1928 in Rhein, SK; a daughter of Carl & Julia (nee Jonat) Wegner. Edna attended school in Rhein and Yorkton. She worked at the Yorkton Airport Hospital. Edna married John MacDonald of Dunleath on March 4, 1949. They farmed in the Dunleath area where they raised their family. Edna skillfully managed the household and also outside work with John. She was a loving and supportive wife and mother. She enjoyed crafting, quilting, crocheting, gardening, and tending to her flower beds. Edna loved to share her beautiful crafts as gifts to others. One of Edna’s greatest loves and pastime was playing the organ. Playing old gospel hymns was her favourite way to worship. Edna and John attended Yorkton Presbyterian Church where Edna sang in the choir, taught vacation bible school at Dunleath, enjoyed and helped to host many Bible studies and was part of the nursing home outreach ministry. Edna leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory her two children: Beverly (Bob) Gersbach of Edmonton, AB; grandson Drew (Shauna), great-granddaughters Charlotte & Victoria of Vancouver, BC; grandson Matthew of Grande Prairie, AB; Ian of Dunleath; grandson Cameron, great-grandsons Conner & Caden; grandson Stuart, all of Moose Jaw, SK. Edna is also survived by her sister Ruth (Bob) Jones of Thunder Bay, ON; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Edna was predeceased by her parents, Carl & Julia; her husband John in 2001; an infant brother Rudolph; sisters Olga, Martha, Laura & Goldie and by brothers Irving & Walter. A graveside service was held on Friday afternoon, November 25, 2016 at the family plot in the Garden of St. Mark at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens. Rev. Devon Pattemore of Grace Presbyterian Church officiated. A reception followed at the Family Centre. Condolences can be left at baileysfuneralhome.com. In Edna’s memory, memorials to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.

GROSS - Eric was born on July 22, 1929, the son of Fred and Molly (nee Ruf) Gross in the Stornoway District of Saskatchewan. He attended Glasgow School. Growing up Eric and his brother, Alvin were constant companions. After the death of their father in their teenage years, Eric and Alvin took over their family farm. After Alvin’s marriage, Eric continued to farm on his own, however they still did all their harvesting together. Eric loved to tinker with machinery, was an excellent mechanic and was able to fix anything. Hunting and fishing were two of his favourite pastimes. He also loved when it was sausage making time after a successful season of deer hunting. Eric and his mother moved into Yorkton in the early 1970’s and he looked after her until she entered a care home in 1989. In 1977, Eric met the love of his life, Joyce and they dated for many years. They married on February 29, 1998. Eric embraced his extended family and enjoyed time spent with all of them. Eric loved the family gatherings and barbecues on a Sunday afternoon. He was always ready for a random road trip or an early morning fishing trip. Eric enjoyed travelling and he and Joyce shared many memorable vacations with their favourites being British Columbia, Las Vegas and especially Nova Scotia. Eric loved life, loved nature and was always ready with a joke to tell. He also enjoyed time spent in his garden and there was never a weed to be found! Eric was predeceased by his parents, Molly and Fred Gross; his niece, Ann Gross; his nephew, Craig Vaughan and his brothers-in-law, Richard Burback, John Ong and Norval Vaughan. Single Malt Scotch and Pork Chef Dez on Cooking
by Gordon Desormeaux www.chefdez.com I am a scotch drinker. This is something I am quite proud of as I have invested a lot of money and time in sipping, tasting, and savoring many different types of Scottish grain whisky. With the holiday season fast approaching I am certain that I won’t be the only one celebrating the company of loved ones with a glass (or more) of this wonderful oak aged spirit. Years ago, a recipe in my test kitchen was born when I discovered the intensely smoky single malt scotch called Laphroaig (pronounced La-froyg). At the time, the peat smoke in this single malt was too overwhelming for me and my Fatherin-law, but over the years I have acquired a deep fondness for it. Back then however, we had this bottle of Laphroaig and because we didn’t feel up to drinking it, I decided to cook with it. Pork was the ideal choice of meat as beef would be too overpowering. I played with the flavours of the scotch by marrying them up with a combination of chicken stock, fresh lemon juice and the sweetness of honey to balance everything out. A bit of heavy cream added and reduced down makes for a perfect finishing syrupy touch. Chicken would also be fine in this recipe, but because of salmonella bacteria in chicken, please make sure it is cooked to a minimum of 165 degrees Fahrenheit, or 71 degrees Celsius. Now with the fondness of Laphroaig dear to my heart, and my taste buds, this has become my alltime favorite scotch cooking recipe. I highly recommend Laphroaig for this recipe as its intense peat smoke comes shining through in the recipe whereas other milder scotches would be lost. Happy Cooking! If you are interested in joining me in Scotland next summer, please visit Auctions
my website. Pork Medallions in Single Malt Pan Sauce From page 131 of Chef Dez’s new book The Best In Your Kitchen “Makes 4 portions (3 medallions each). Live like the Scots - Scotch is for cooking too!” •1-pound (500g) pork tenderloin(s) •2 tsp canola oil •Salt & pepper •1/2 cup chicken broth •1/4 cup peaty single malt scotch •Juice of 1/2 lemon •1 tbsp liquid honey •1/4 cup whipping cream 1. Cut the tenderloin(s) into 12 equal sized medallions, approximately one half inch to three quarter inch thickness. Toss with the oil and season both sides with salt and pepper. 2. Heat a heavy bottomed pan over medium high heat. 3. When the pan is hot add the medallions and sear them for approximately 2 to 3 minutes on each side. 4. Add the chicken stock to the pan to deglaze (stir briefly to remove the browned bits off the pan into the sauce). 5. Add the Scotch carefully and ignite with a long match or lighter. Flambé until the flames subside. Remove the medallions and set them aside. 6. Add the lemon juice, honey and cream to the pan. Continue to boil until syrupy and desired sauce consistency. Remove from heat, lightly season to taste with salt and pepper, and serve immediately poured over the reserved medallions. Chef Dez is a Chef, Writer, & Host. To our Yorkton Co-op members and customers, You may have heard the recent news about the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority awarding a number of liquor permits throughout the province, including Yorkton. Many businesses, both big and small, applied for these opportunities. While some Co-ops were successful, the application from Yorkton Co-op was not. Your Yorkton Co-op is a local business owned by you and operated for you. Because of that, we’re disappointed that we weren’t successful in adding a liquor store to serve you, our members and customers. We are also concerned for Saskatchewan businesses because the liquor stores in the large urban centres in the province went to a national company headquartered outside of the province and two other out-of-province companies. The profits generated by these organizations won’t flow to local and provincial economies. Yorkton Co-op operates in Yorkton and surrounding communities such as Theodore, Ebenezer and Kamsack, has 18,965 members and provides 210 jobs. Yorkton Co-op shares its financial success with its members and in 2016 returned $970,000 in cash to its members. During the past 5 years it has returned $7,617,000 to its members. The Co-op and other businesses based in Saskatchewan weren’t asking for special treatment when it comes to these larger liquor store opportunities. We are suggesting that the selection process should have considered the contribution that local businesses, including retail co-ops, make to our province’s economy and our communities. Keeping dollars in Saskatchewan should matter to us all. If you share our passion and support for local businesses that keep our communities strong, there is something you can do. If you are also concerned with how the profits from privatizing liquor stores are being sent out of our communities and our province, become part of the conversation. Tell your friends. Speak to your neighbors. Share your opinion with local and provincial representatives. Yorkton is committed to local service, local employment, and sharing our success with our communities and members. Let’s work together to ensure that local businesses are given the opportunity to succeed and thrive. Sincerely, Bruce Thurston, General Manager Yorkton Co-operative Association Limited
