What shall we eat? One of the most prized things that we have in this era of time is our access to so many kinds of food at the local grocery store. It was not that long ago that most of what was sold in a local store was in fact LOCAL. Grown within 15-20 miles of a central town and only bulk items were shipped in and those items were really needed such as sugar or spices. Now we have foods that have travelled a minimum 2000 miles to get to your local store, and there is almost nothing that comes from nearby. We rely heav-
ily on shipping and refrigeration to get our desired products to us and keep them. Let’s be blunt about the problem, if the food you routinely buy could no longer be shipped to you, whether because of a disaster or economics became too much of a barrier such as really bad gas prices: Where would your food come from tomorrow? I would sincerely ask you to stop reading, and say “There is no grocery store now”. If you have been honest with this thought, your result may be similar to mine. I observed that many of the conveniences of society have cultured me into not providing for the basic needs in my life. It is not the grocery store
or shipping company’s fault that I no longer can buy food at such ease. It is not the government or the economy’s job to supply this basic need: no it is my God given right and pleasure to do this myself, and provide any help to those who are incapable to help themselves. I really enjoy reading about the Great Depression back in the 30’s. There are not too many people alive now to glean beneficial info from about how families survived or thrived in this era, but I can tell you some basics. There was no insurance, so certainly no Employment insurance, no welfare, no real handouts of any kind, no credit cards. People needed to care for themselves, and if they did not then they likely didn’t survive. Instead, with
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old male. I had to stop playing golf about two years ago due to joint pain. I had psoriasis from age 15 until I was 40. I am retired from the Navy and had to be hospitalized twice during my time in service due to my skin. Why it disappeared at age 40, I don’t know. Is it possible that I could have psoriatic arthritis? One doctor I saw said that I had to have psoriasis in order to get it. I saw that you said that sometimes the arthritis shows up before the skin lesions. Can it show up after you have quit having the lesions? — Anon. ANSWER: Indeed, psoriatic arthritis can show up years after psoriasis starts and when there are no skin lesions. Often, pits in the nails or other nail changes are seen in those with psoriatic arthritis. However, having psoriasis doesn’t protect you from other types of arthritis, such as osteo-
arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Since psoriatic arthritis is so destructive, you should see an expert, perhaps a rheumatologist. The arthritis booklet discusses rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 301W, 628 Virginia Drive Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: Do varicose veins in the leg still return blood? Does circulation diminish if they are removed? Should the elderly avoid removal? What if a vena cava filter exists for a one-time DVT 25 years ago? — S.S. ANSWER: Varicose veins are dilated veins. They are very common, especially as we get older, and they seem to run in families. They often come because of leaky valves inside the veins. A previous blood clot is a risk factor, and a filter may make varicose veins and clots somewhat more likely. They do continue to function, returning blood. They should be treated conservatively, with leg elevation, exer-
cise and compression, such as using pressure stockings. I seldom recommend more-aggressive therapy, but if they are symptomatic (pain, tightness, skin irritation) despite a good trial of conservative treatment, they can be treated with laser or radiofrequency ablation, by injecting medication into or around them, or by vein stripping. A vascular surgeon is the expert on these treatments.
PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay
ANSWER: Since the aneurism wasn’t repaired, I would not recommend taking the NSAID unless your consulting neurosurgeon has specifically told you that it is safe to do so. I wouldn’t be brave enough to prescribe it without that OK, even though there is some evidence saying it may be safe.

Asessippi Ski Area and Resort will have a new attraction this winter - dog sled rides.
Asessippi offering another attraction this winter
Visitors to the Asessippi Ski Area & Resort will have one more outdoor activity to participate in this winter. Asessippi, located northwest of Russell, Manitoba, has announced that it has teamed up with Bluesky Expeditions of Churchill to offer an authentic dogsledding experience. Gerald Azure, an internationally renowned musher, has operated his dog sled business in Churchill since 2001. Recognized by thou-
sands of tourists and media from all over the world, he has an inherent gift of celebrating his aboriginal culture and sharing valuable “sled dog philosophy” based on kindness and respect for everyone he crosses paths with, especially his dogs. “A dogsled ride with Bluesky Expeditions can teach you valuable lessons about life’s challenges, and take you on a step back in time,” said Azure, who together with his partner Jenafor
Ollander have been working this summer to map out a trail and build kennels for the dogs at Asessippi. The 28 sled dogs will arrive at Asessippi in early December, with training on the runs to commence soon after. Dogsledding for the public will begin during the Christmas season and continue until early March, when Bluesky will return to Churchill for the spring season. Asessippi school program manager Wanda
Guay said the resort is hoping to drive traffic from schools and groups, but adds that initial public reaction has been very positive in that it is a unique experience that isn’t normally offered anywhere in the southern areas. Guay explained that guests will purchase tickets and then be assigned a timeslot for the experience, which will begin with an orientation in a tent just below the Squirrel (quad) chairlift. Two or three guests,
depending on their size and weight, will be able to go on each sled. “The orientation will inform guests of Metis traditions, living on the land, Churchill life and working together as a dog team,” said Guay. “The tent will feature Metis and Churchill décor – all educational and interactive.” Azure is a co-founder of the Annual Hudson Bay Quest, one of the most challenging dog sled races between

The Canora Medical Clinic and therapies staff will transition into the space from October 14 - 19, 2015. “I expect that our move-in week will be very busy,” Primary Health Care Manager, Mary-Jean Vogel. “We would appreciate the cooperation of our community to only book essential appointments during this time.” The last day of appointments at the Canora Medical Clinic downtown location is October 13, 2015. Clients with appointments between October 14-19, 2015, will be seen at a temporary location in the ECG room at the Canora Hospital. The move will not affect emergency, laboratory or inpatient services at the hospital and these services will continue uninterrupted. After October 19, all appointments will be seen at
the new Canora Health and Wellness Centre location in the Canora Hospital. The phone number to book an appointment will not change and is 306-563-5557. Sunrise Health Region and the Town of Canora are pleased to announce that Dr. Afshari will be joining the primary health care team at the new location and will begin seeing patients on October 21, 2015. The Canora Health & Wellness Centre is not a walk in clinic. Please call ahead to make an appointment. Same day, evening and weekend appointments may be accommodated. “We will be holding tours of the new space during our grand opening event on November 19, 2015,” says Richardson. “We are very excited for the co-location of the team. This will make such a difference for our clients and our health care team.” A schedule for tours and more information about the grand opening event will soon be announced.

He has been recognized for his accomplishments and contributions to dog sledding in the Churchill area in by Travel Manitoba Tourism Awards and Manitoba Hydro-Spirit of the Earth Awards. Fall Home
Improvement
Five tips for painting like a pro
(NC) — Like the changing of the leaves, fall is the perfect time to update the colours in your home. With open windows, a cool breeze and the tips below, you can check painting off your list in a snap and head back outdoors to enjoy your favourite autumn activities. 1. Buy high-quality paint for the best coverage and deepest colour saturation When it comes to
paint, quality matters. Search for a combination paint-and-primer to save a few steps and ensure complete coverage. Good options have high hiding ability and resist stains and scuffs. 2. Use websites and apps tools to simplify your search Once you’ve chosen your product, it’s time to pick a colour. Colour selection can seem intimidating, but is a
chance to infuse your personality into your home. Many online resources are available for homeowners to explore, coordinate and experiment with different looks. 3. Use paint samples, rather than chips The easiest way to see the colour in your home is to see it in action. Many paint retailers offer small sample cans for just a few dollars. Use these to paint a few stripes of
each colour option in the room you’ll be painting, then watch as the colour changes in different lighting conditions. 4. Use the right painting supplies High-quality painting tools save you time over the course of your project and produce the most beautiful finish. For best results, use a high-quality, lint-free roller cover. Select brushes made of nylon and polyester, and for flawless edges, use
a painter’s tape specifically designed for your surface type. 5. Spend time preparing for your project Proper preparation is the key to achieving long-lasting colour. Begin by removing all wall fixtures you can, such as pictures, doors and light switches. If you have small cracks or holes in your walls, remove any dust and apply a patching material. Make sure to allow this to dry com-
pletely before sanding the finished area. Wash away oil, grease or wax stains by dampening the surface, applying mild detergent with a sponge and then rinse the wall clean. Once dried, you’ll be ready for smooth application and beautiful colour. With these five tips and a free afternoon, you can easily transform the inside of your home into a cozy retreat for fall.

Transform your bathroom in a weekend This Week Marketplace | October 16, 2015
(NC) — Your bathroom is more than just a place to wash up. It’s a space to relax, unwind and refresh. This small room can make a big impact on your home and can easily be transformed into a personal spa. Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore Colour & Design Expert, helps to transform your bathroom into a relaxing oasis over a weekend in four easy steps. Upgrade your Hardware: Updating your hardware such as faucets and showerheads can be transformative without breaking your budget. Hardware has gone in bold new directions and colours this year including gold, white, bronze, chrome and brushed stainless steel. “Gold hardware
can bring incredible drama when used as an accent,” advises Grech. “Where as white can add elegance and a clean, modern look.” Choosing the Right Colour and Finish: To create an open, airy feel in a small bathroom, Grech recommends using subtle colours and working with a monochromatic colour scheme that features various paint finishes. “You can create dimension in any room by playing around with varying sheen levels. Painting wood paneling on walls or ceilings in a different finish is an excellent way to add depth,” says Grech. Anyone who enjoys a satisfying soak should also pay special attention to the ceil-
ing. “Incorporating an accent colour to your ceiling can bring life to your bathroom
and something lovely to enjoy while gazing up,” says Grech. Select the Paint for a

Professional Job: Since there’s a great deal of moisture in the bathroom, it’s important to pick a quality paint that is moisture and mildew resistant. Personalize with Accents: Towels, floor mats, artwork and accessories are your chance to show off your style. Grech recommends experimenting with different materials and textures within your colour scheme or incorporating one bold punch of contrasting colour to energize the room. “A bright colour can be just the thing to help wake you up on a sluggish morning,” she notes. Consider moisture issues when insulating By Scott McGillivray
We insulate our homes primarily to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. As a result, most of us evaluate insulation based on its thermal properties, which is definitely important to consider. However, there is another aspect of wall and ceiling insulation that should be considered before making a final decision, and that’s moisture. If you choose the wrong insulation, moisture can seriously damage the longterm performance of the insulation, drastically reducing the benefits it offers to your home. Although wall and ceiling cavities may be out of sight after a
home is built, they are very important spaces in residential construction and remodeling projects. They play a critical role in managing the interior temperature, noise level, air-flow and mold levels. It is important that the insulation in the walls and ceilings works just
as well years after installation as it does the day after the project is completed. This means that the insulation needs to stay consistent over time –– any sagging, compressing or rotting will compromise the safety and comfort of your home. To combat these
potential problems, look for insulation that does not absorb water, but repels it. Stone wool insulation, like that produced by Roxul, is a good choice. Water-resistance is important year-round, but especially in summer, when humidity levels rise, and in spring and fall, when rain and moisture levels can increase dramatically. It’s vital that your insulation won’t compress or sag within the wall or ceiling cavity, because when insulation materials compress and sag, they leave gaps, compromising the thermal performance of the wall. Cold, heat and sound can pass through much more easily, creating a living space that’s less comfort-
Hiring a decorating professional Using the services of a decorating professional can save you time as well as money. These specialists are the perfect solution when designing a new dining room or giving your entire home a makeover seems like an overwhelming prospect. Designer or decorator? Interior designers plan and create interior living spaces for their clients according to their needs. They can design
minor renovations and organize the construction details. They can also plan and organize storage solutions and furniture choices. Decorators, on the other hand, add to a designer’s plans by suggesting materials, floor coverings, colours, window coverings and decoration in general. During the first client meeting, these specialists will quickly work to ensure they have all the information required
to carry out their work. They will probably take a multitude of measurements and photos of your existing decor and the space to be modified. They will also be ready to discuss your budget, preferences and schedule. The best way to tell if a decorating professional is going to be a fit is to see if they: • Listen carefully • Never try to impose their choices • Ask numerous ques-

able and more expensive to heat and cool. Another important consideration when choosing insulation is mold resistance. Materials that resist mold growth, like stone wool, are essential to the health of your home and family. Because mold feeds on organic matter, selecting an insulation that is composed of nonorganic mat-
ter is ideal to prevent rot. Keeping moisture and mold at bay with a quality insulation will contribute to a safer indoor environment and provide energy savings and comfort benefits that can last for the lifetime of a home. Bamboo isn’t just for pandas A12
October 16, 2015 | This Week Marketplace
It’s a well-known fact that bamboo is the staple food of pandas, who can nibble through 20 to 30 kg of the stuff every day. In addition to being the favourite food of this iconic Asian animal, bamboo is also a fascinating plant whose wood is suitable for many dif-
ferent uses. Floor covering Bamboo floors have become increasingly popular in recent years. Flooring experts agree that bamboo floors are solid, stable and eyecatchingly beautiful. And environmentalists will
Four tips for a basement makeover By Scott McGillivray
The start of a new season is the perfect time to check some tasks off of your “to-do” list — whether it’s to get in shape or tackle at-home projects. If you’re planning on making some simple but effective changes at home, here are some tips on how to give your basement a total 180-degree makeover. Soundproof it Installing acoustic insulation is the perfect excuse to crank up the subwoofer, host a get-together or let the kids run wild. Soundproofing is the ultimate solution to maximize your basement’s peace, quiet and privacy. Industry experts suggest using Roxul Safe n’ Sound, which effectively absorbs sound and is easy to work with. Out with the old, in with a floor Installing a new floor or updating the existing one can improve the overall comfort level and look of your basement. Many unfinished basements have basic concrete flooring, which is cold year-round. Flooring options are endless — hardwood, laminate, cork and Berber flooring all add warmth to a basement bedroom or TV room; play mats are great for kids’ playrooms; and carpets are perfect to make any room feel more comfy and welcoming. Get creative with a fresh coat of paint Transform the dull and boring space into an inviting entertainment oasis or a colorful playroom with a simple coat of paint. When considering the paint, think about what color will compliment your existing furniture. To add some drama, consider adding depth and visual interest to your space with a different colored accent wall. Accessorize it Throw pillows, rugs, lighting, and artwork are simple additions that can immediately enhance or change your basement’s look and feel. Pot lights can modernize, while art work and throw pillows can add a splash of color. Decide on a theme and color scheme for your room and keep your eye out for staple pieces that will make it feel like an entirely new space. Create more space in your home This Week Marketplace | October 16, 2015
As real estate prices continue to climb, the cost to trade up to a larger home is on the upswing across the country, especially as markets remain hampered by tight inventory levels. As a result, more and more people are choosing to renovate their current homes instead of relocating. In fact, some forecasts predict that 2015 renovation spending could exceed the record of $324 billion set during the peak of last decade’s housing boom. While the hunt for more square footage can be challenging, home-
owners shouldn’t feel like a costly second story or complete addition are the only options. Here are five great ways to create or optimize space in your existing home. 1. Finish an unfinished basement. A basement renovation can hold limitless potential and increase the resale value or income potential of your home. Think about the possibilities: a home theater, office, spare bedroom, basement apartment or recreation room. The key to doing it suc-
cessfully is to focus on what’s behind the walls, especially since moisture is a common issue in basements. Choosing the right insulation is critical. Look for products that are vapor permeable, dimensionally stable and mold and moisture resistant. Many contractors use Roxul Comfortboard IS semi-rigid sheathing board paired with Comfortbatt batt insulation to combat thermal bridging and protect against mold and mildew growth. An added benefit of this type of mineral
wool insulation is that it’s also fireresistant to 2,150 F. For interior walls and ceilings, Safe ‘n’ Sound insulation is ideal because of its ability to absorb noise and indoor traffic sounds, ensuring your newfound space is a peaceful one. 2. Create a more openconcept feel with light and color. If your home wasn’t blessed with towering windows, installing French doors and pot lights can encourage light to travel more freely, creating the illusion of space. Likewise, choosing a paint color for
The ideal sound experience
Advancements in digital technology over the years mean that almost anyone can own a home theatre or music room or build a recording studio in their home. When you’re planning your project, there are a number of elements that will make the difference between good and great sound. Just like in real estate, location is crucial, so finding the best space within your home will be vital. You want to find a place that will provide ample room, comfortable temperatures and easy access. A room
with windows is fine, as long as they are double glazed, sealed correctly and don’t open. Be sure to install a heavy, wellinsulated door to prevent sound leakage. Insulation is among the most critical steps in creating an ideal sound experience. Many professionals recommend Safe’n’Sound insulation produced by Roxul. Specially designed for your home’s interior walls, ceilings and floors to reduce the transfer of noise from one room to another, this high-density stone wool insulation provides an excellent acous-
tic barrier that effectively absorbs sound. Its nondirectional fiber structure composition, density and friction-fit prevent any gaps and combat airborne noise such as music, speech and traffic sounds. Sound can often echo and reverberate. Sound dampening measures such as carpeting can help alleviate the problem or you can purchase acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout your room. With basic DIY skills, you can also simply and affordably construct your own acous-
tic panels, using stone wool rigid board called Comfortboard IS, which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise. Insulating properly will help achieve optimal sound quality. It will also allow you to get the most of your space without disturbing the rest of your family or neighbors. All that’s left is to turn up your tunes and enjoy.
walls, trim and moldings that is lighter and cooler in tone (think soft grays or blues) will help to reflect light and give the room a more open feel. 3. Remove nonload-bearing walls. Homeowners have the opportunity to rethink the layout of their home by removing non-loadbearing walls. Removing structurally unnecessary walls can make your whole home feel larger, improve flow, lighting and the function of your home. 4. Convert your garage into usable living or work space. For many homeowners, the garage becomes an overflow room for storage –– and is often a walk-in headache.
Convert your garage (or a portion of it) into another living space, guest bedroom or home office. Install carpet and quality thermal insulation such as Roxul Comfortbatt to block outdoor noise and keep in warmth. 5. Choose furniture and accessories carefully. Adopt a minimalist’s eye. Begin looking around your home for furniture or accessories that overwhelm the space. Interior designers recommend choosing low-profile or small-scale furniture for rooms with less square footage. Dualpurpose items, such as ottomans with storage chests inside, are a budget-friendly way to save on space while staying organized.

The power of the shower: freshen up your space
(NC) — No matter when you choose to clean up, there are a number of ways to easily transform your shower space into a productive – and relaxing oasis. Here are five ideas to help set the mood and maybe even change your daily outlook, all of which can be completed in the time it takes for you to lather, rinse and repeat. 1. Clean Up Your Space. Starting with a clean, well-organized shower sets the tone for a truly relaxing experience. Declutter the shower by installing shelves or storage pieces. Some shelves and accessories pull double duty and feature bath safety elements, like grab bars, to make your shower safer and clutter free. 2. Home Spa Experience. If you’re looking to maximize relaxation time in the shower, try replacing your existing showerhead with an option that offers multiple spray settings like the new Magnetix hand showers from Moen Canada. A powerful magnetic dock allows for easy release and replace of the showerhead, even with your eyes closed, so there’s no need to interrupt your Zen. Magnetix features six high-performance spray options, ranging from massage to combinations of soft and forceful, fullrinse sprays. 3. Think about functional designs. Sitting down in the shower is another way to relax while you scrub. For ladies, a shower seat will reduce the strain put on your back and neck while shaving, and at the same time can help prevent falls. If you’re short on space, look for a model that folds down to provide a seat when you need it and then neatly tucks away when you don’t. A curved rod is another great addition for smaller showers. There are curved rods in a variety of styles and finishes to perfectly match
any décor, providing up to seven inches of additional space inside the shower. 4. Beautify Your Surroundings. Adding a bit of greenery can perk up any room, so why not the shower? Try adding plants to give the illusion of a lush outdoor experience. A philodendron is a perfect option because it doesn’t need soil and can thrive in smaller containers. Bringing in aromatic plants can also help calm the mind. Try

How many birds are at your feeders? A16
October 16, 2015 | This Week Marketplace
When thousands of people in communities across Canada count the birds at their feeders and report their tallies to Bird Studies Canada, the result is a goldmine of information, which scientists analyse to draw a picture of winter bird abundance and distribution. With each season, Project FeederWatch increases in importance as a unique tool for monitoring more than 100 species of bird that winter in North America. Now in its 39th season in Canada (and 29th season as a North America-wide program), FeederWatch needs observations from your backyard. FeederWatchers in Canada were pleased to have more bird activity at their feeders during the winter of 2014-15 after record low numbers dur-
ing the extremely harsh winter of 2013-14. On average, FeederWatch participants reported 46 individual birds per week; this is below the long-term average of 51 birds per week, but up from last year’s low of 42. Will there be lots of birds at feeders in 2015-16? Join FeederWatch and tell us how many are in your yard! Kerrie Wilcox, the Canadian coordinator of Project FeederWatch, noted: “We learn so much from the data people report to us. Project FeederWatch results have helped scientists learn about changes in bird distribution and abundance over time; expansions and contractions in winter ranges; the spread of disease through bird populations; and the kinds of

Q: I am so happy that my favorite new show of last season, “NCIS: New Orleans,” is back! Can you give me the inside scoop for this season? — Dominick F., via email A: “NCIS: New Orleans” returned in late September with a bang — literally. As I’m sure you know, they blew up a bridge. While, of course, those in charge are pretty hush-hush about storylines, I can tell you a few things. First is that last season’s recurring character, Sonja Percy — played by Tony-nominated actress Shalita Grant — will now
Shalita Grant be a series regular. While Shalita is thrilled to be on set full time, her alter ego is having a slightly tougher time. “Scott (Bakula’s character, Dwayne Pride) is all about giving the newbie, or ‘probe,’ the business,” Shalita said. “It’s not going to be easy for Sonja Percy. At one point, I call them my ‘agent
habitats and foods that attract birds.” Wilcox says that Project FeederWatch is always on the lookout for new participants. Participants choose how much time to spend on the project. They select their own count per-
iod, and count for as little as 15 minutes (or as long as they wish) on count days. Sightings are entered online at www. birdscanada.org/pfw or reported on paper data forms. Project FeederWatch is a joint project of Bird Studies
Canada and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Each year, there are more than 20,000 FeederWatchers across the continent. For more information about Project FeederWatch, please visit our website or contact the coordinator at
1-888-448-2473 or pfw@ birdscanada.org. In the United States, please call 1-800-843-2473. Bird Studies Canada is Canada’s leading national charitable organization dedicated to bird science and conservation.
abusers,’ because that’s kind of how they are. But Sonja can take it. And throughout the series, she will be dishing it out. Sonja and LaSalle, Sonja and Brody, and even Sonja and Pride are getting closer, and those relationships are all unique. You get to see where Sonja is coming from in some of these cases.” Shalita also let me know that while there might be fireworks storywise, life on the set is pretty relaxed: “It’s so boring on set in that we all get along. Lucas (Black) is like 2 years old, and he’s always doing something. Zoe (McLellan) is so goofy. And Scott, he’s just fun and easygoing.” Q: I saw a preview for a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio where he has a
beard, is all dirty, and is seeking revenge on Tom Hardy. Can you tell me about it? The movie looks really good! — Douglas C., Annapolis, Maryland. A: You are referring to “The Revenant,” which will open Christmas Day in select cities (to qualify for Oscar consideration), with a wider opening Jan. 8, 2016. Leo plays explorer Hugh Glass, who is left for dead by Tom’s John Fitzgerald after Hugh is mauled by a bear. Set in 1823, the film is based on Michael Punke’s novel
“The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge,” and, of course, there is already Oscar buzz surrounding the film. Q: You mentioned that the Ben Affleck/Matt Damon-produced show “Project Greenlight” would be back, but I haven’t heard anything about it. I watched it on Bravo a few years back, but it’s not there anymore. — Felicia F., via email A: “Project Greenlight” moved back to its original home, HBO,
for its fourth season, which premiered Sept. 13 and has its season finale Nov. 1, airing a total of eight episodes. The show made news recently not for the competition itself, but for Matt Damon trying to explain diversity in the film industry to black producer Effie Brown, who serves as a judge on the show. May I have your attention please!!! My name is Stella well Princess Stella to be exact. I am 3 years old and I have been with my loving foster mom (the queen mom) for so long that I am now ready to Ànd a palace of my own with a kingdom to rule. I would prefer my palace to contain some children and other pets of any kind as I do like them all. Also I would like a comfy bed to sleep in, toys to play with and plenty of hugs and snuggles along with some good food and plenty of treats. I may be small but I sure can do all the things the big girls can. I should also mention that I seem to be a bit of an escape artist so my palace and kingdom must be fenced. I also happen to be spayed and up to date with all of my vaccines. If you are interested in meeting me please contact my friends on their facebook page, or the website yorktongaar.com or email my friend carmenyasinski@sasktel.net.

Winter Works THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Steffy demanded that Thomas apologize to their father, Ridge, for punching him. Eric agreed to speak with Steffy on Ivy’s behalf about getting her job back at Forrester Creations. Realizing that Eric was unaware of the whole truth surrounding Ivy’s dismissal, Steffy filled in the blanks, which included being blackmailed. Ivy felt uncomfortable with her new position at the company. Thomas was shocked by Ridge’s decision and begged Caroline to help him out. Maya told Rick about what she wanted next out of their marriage. Liam disapproved of Steffy’s plans for Ivy. Zende hinted to Nicole that he would like to take their relationship to the next level. Wait to See: The stress of keeping a secret is too much to bear for someone. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Chad and Stefano came up with a strategy to flush out Clyde. Stress over Chad’s predicament took its toll on Abigail, who suffered a health crisis. JJ rescued Gabi from a tense situation. Theresa and Brady feared that something was wrong with Tate. Steve returned to Salem with some disturbing news about Bo. JJ tried to trap Clyde. Aiden realized that there may be another way for him to pay off his debts. Will uncovered key evidence about the Necktie Killer. Caroline had a vision of Bo. Aiden finally exacted payback against Clyde. Chad and Abigail shared a fraught moment when he asked her why she kept helping him. Stefano and Andre attempted to clear Chad’s name. The Necktie Killer claimed another victim. OLD-FASHIONED COCOA CAKE The perfect afterschool or midnight snack, it’s made with a blend of buttermilk and mayonnaise instead of butter in the batter. •2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour •1-1/2 cups sugar •3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa •1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda •3/4 teaspoons salt •1-1/2 cups buttermilk •3/4 cup mayonnaise •1 tablespoon vanilla extract •2 large eggs
squares unsweetened chocolate •2 cups confectioners’ sugar •3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) margarine, softened, substitute butter •1 teaspoon vanilla extract
RICH CHOCOLATE FROSTING: •4 (1 ounce each) squares semisweet chocolate •2 (1 ounce each)
Heat oven to 350 F. Grease 13-by-9-inch metal baking pan. In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt. In medium bowl, with wire whisk, mix buttermilk, mayonnaise, vanilla and eggs until almost smooth. With spoon, stir buttermilk mixture into flour mixture until batter is smooth. Spoon into baking pan. Bake 35 to 40 minutes until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Cool
• Spring bulbs need a few weeks in the ground to get established before the first of the frosts. If you’re just getting around to planting your spring bulbs, here is a great garden design tip: Use kebab skewers to figure out the bulbs’ placement in the garden. • “Place an ice cube (or ice chips) in carpet divots left behind by furniture legs. This will help the fibers “plump up,” and the spot will disappear!” — A.I in Utah • Felt circles are great for putting under small appliances on the kitchen counter. They are easier to move around, and they won’t scratch the countertops. You can find them at the hardware store, or make your own by cutting out what you need from a piece of felt and attaching it to the bottom of your appliance with double-stick
tape ... or even a drop of glue! • Running a washing machine that isn’t full not only wastes energy and water, it also wastes money because you’re paying to run more washes. Always fill the machine — but remember not to overload it! This applies to your dishwasher, too. • “To help repel the dust on baseboards between cleanings, wipe with a used dryer sheet. To make this even easier, you can put the dryer sheet over a Swiffer-type floor cleaner. This way, you don’t even have to bend down.” — M.E. in Alabama • “You can use plain alcohol on a paper towel to wipe down your house telephone. I do this a couple of times a week during cold season. Also, purchase a pack of electronics wipes, so everyone can keep his or her cellphone screen clean. Think about it: We constantly touch the screen with our fingers, then stick it right up to our face!” — W.R. in New York

Car seats and swings may not sleep baby safely A32
October 16, 2015 | This Week Marketplace
Frazzled new parents seek out any way to get their infants to sleep soundly, particularly when these parents also could use some shut-eye. Some parents will attest that newborns seem to come into the world with their days and nights mixed up, as well as with an aversion to resting comfortably in a bassinet or crib, noting how infants seem to doze off most comfortably in swings or car seats. While it may be tempting to let sleeping babies lie, or rather, sit, in car seats when they’re asleep, research has suggested that car seats are not the safest places for babies to sleep. A relatively recent study in the journal Pediatrics
showed that the car seats can compress the chest wall and reduce airway size, possibly lowering blood oxygen levels. The study placed 200 healthy newborns in a hospital crib for 30 minutes and in a car bed or car seat for an hour. Infants who slept in a car seat or car bed had lower oxygen levels than when they slept in the crib. Pulmonary pediatrics experts at Massachusetts General Hospital concur, saying car seats can cause mild respiratory compromise in about 20 percent of newborns. This means that the car seats should be restricted to use in the car only, and not be used as a
makeshift sleeping area outside of the vehicle. Hypoxia, or a fall in oxygen levels that causes a deficiency in the blood, is associated with behavioral problems and adverse effects on development, offer researchers from Auckland University. Limiting time spent in car seats, and similarly, infant swings, can help prevent the condition. A child’s head can fall forward onto his or her chest and cause a decline in available oxygen. When children are in car seats for travel, ensure the seat is set at the proper incline, usually a 45-degree angle. This helps keep airways open. If a child falls asleep in a swing at
home, keep an eye on him or her. Turn off the rocking mechanism when he or she falls asleep and be sure that infants are always buckled in securely to avoid their slipping out and falling. Keep the swing in the most reclined position until the baby is able to lift and hold up his or her head on his or her own. Also, don’t pad the swing with loose pillows or blankets, as this can increase SIDS risk, advises the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Parents should recognize that car seats and swings should not be used as sleeping areas for children. Consult with a pediatrician about safer ways to help kids get some sleep.

In the spirit of fall, let a blaze of edible leaf-shaped chips fall on your platters for a tasty, healthy treat for parties, or for a quick and easy eye-catching after-school snack. Pop the colorful chips, designed by cookie cutters and made from your favorite tortillas and wraps, in the oven, or take the shortcut approach and use your microwave. Either way, the crispy and crunchy edible “leaves” will be a super family hit. When you peruse the tortilla and wrap section of your grocery store, the choices for making your chips can be daunting. I grabbed the colorful varieties to mimic the look of changing leaves in our backyard. Whole-
grain tomato basil wraps, spinach flour tortillas and sprouted grains tortillas were perfect for the project. My family also likes corn tortillas for their taqueria-style flavor and texture, but the cookie cutters simply didn’t cut through those as easily. For that variety, we used scissors and cut out geometric shapes and capital alphabet letters to spell “LEAF.” Whatever you choose, here’s how to make this healthy, whimsical snack: LEAF-SHAPED TORTILLA CHIPS •6-8 tortillas and wraps in a variety of flavors and colors, such as tomato basil, spinach, sprouted grains and corn
1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. Place a tortilla on a wooden cutting board, and cut into leaf shapes with metal cookie cutters. If using corn tortillas, use scissors to cut your own leaf designs and alphabet letters. You might cut letters to make a word such as “leaf,” “fall,” “Happy Halloween” or the name of your favorite sports team. 3. Set cutouts in a single layer on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper or brushed with oil. Lightly brush shapes with oil and sprinkle with salt and other favorite seasonings. 4. Bake for 6 minutes. Rotate the baking sheet and bake until the chips are crisp, lightly golden and brown, about 3 minutes more. Serve with salsa and dips. Serves 4-6. Chips can be stored
in an airtight container for up to three days. SHORTCUT: Make a few chips quickly in your microwave. Cut a tortilla in shapes and set on a paper towel. Microwave on high for about 1 minute. Turn cutouts over and microwave for 15-30
seconds or until lightly brown and crisp, but not burnt. Keep watch, as microwaves vary. Sprinkle with salt or seasonings and serve. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television

Throw a hauntingly good Halloween party This Week Marketplace | October 16, 2015
Halloween is a special day that delights children of all ages and helps adults feel like kids at heart. Few people want the fun to end once trickor-treating is over. By throwing a Halloween party, revelers can continue celebrating well into the evening. When hosting a Halloween party, it helps to determine who will be in attendance before making any plans. Parties that include children should be PG in nature, and hosts should find the right balance between
scary and fun. While you want to have a certain measure of the macabre, make sure you don’t send young guests home with nightmares. Reserve gruesome decorations and details for adult-only parties. Halloween parties do not necessarily need to be ghoulish to be fun. Try a glittery gala masquerade party or decorate exclusively in orange and black. Classically eerie parties may feature ravens and crows, or they can be subtlely spooky with red candles and
Halloween celebrations across the globe Candy, time spent with friends and colorful costumes make Halloween a day to be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Halloween also can be a lucrative time of year, as the National Retail Federation notes that Halloween spending equals roughly $6.9 billion each year. But as popular as Halloween seems, many countries do not celebrate the holiday. Halloween observances are limited mainly to North America and areas of Great Britain. Thanks to North American influence and trade, some elements of Halloween have spread to other areas, including South America, Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia. But Halloween celebrations outside of North America may not be recognizable to those accustomed to celebrations stateside. In Scotland and Ireland, traditional customs of Halloween include dressing up in costume or “guising.” Parties may be held, and some people have bonfires or set off firework displays. Filipinos meanwhile return to their hometowns and purchase flowers and candles in preparation for All Saints Day, which takes place the day after Halloween. In China, the Halloween festival is known as Teng Chieh. Food and water are placed in front of photographs of family members who have passed away while bonfires and lanterns are lit in order to light paths for the spirits as they travel the planet on Halloween night. In Latin America and Mexico, Halloween is known as “El Dia de los Muertos.” Translated as “the day of the dead,” Dia de los Muertos is a three-day celebration that begins on the evening of October 31 and culminates on November 2. It is more a celebration of departed friends and family members than a chance to get hordes of candy. In France, Halloween was relatively unheard of until the mid-1990s. It was considered an American holiday and not celebrated. However, the draw of parties and costumed festivities led some French to embrace certain components of Halloween.
heavy curtains. Many people can’t wait to dress up for a Halloween party, even picking out their costumes months in advance. Still, not everyone feels comfortable donning a costume. To welcome all guests, don’t make costumes mandatory. One way around this is to set up a Halloween Disguise Table full of accessories that anyone can borrow and use to alter their appearance. Goofy glasses, strange hats, adhesive mustaches, or masks can be fun. If someone didn’t feel comfortable dressing in full costume, he or she may be more apt to pop in a set of plastic fangs or put on a spinning bow tie. Food is an integral part of any party and can enhance Halloween soirées. Candy is a pivotal component of Halloween and you can play off that
theme at your party. Set up a candy bar full of appropriately hued candies of all shapes and sizes. Put them on display in clear glass or plastic canisters so they add to your Halloween décor. Some people like to get creative with Halloween cuisine, crafting foods into items that may look like parts of the
body or other symbols of the holiday. Cookie cutters can turn sandwiches, desserts, biscuits, and many other foods into different shapes. However, foods also can be made a tad more spooky simply by renaming them or presenting them in interesting containers. Why not serve punch out of a fish aquarium? Other bever-
ages can be housed in jugs or old bottles and labeled “potions.” Use laboratory instruments, such as petri dishes, vials and beakers, to serve snacks. A Halloween party makes for a fun night, and there is no limit to what hosts can do when planning their scary soirées.
