The severe storm that hit Yorkton and area on July 31 brought flash flooding and reports of a tornado near Melville. People from around the region witnessed the results of
the storm and the spectacle of the clouds and heavy rainfall that defined it. These are some examples of what people saw during the storm in the area.

Canadians invited to celebrate agriculture Canadian agriculture representatives have announced February 15, 2017 will be Canada’s Agriculture Day – Canadian agriculture representatives today announced February 16, 2017 will be Canada’s Agriculture Day – a time to celebrate and draw a closer connection between Canadians, our food and the people who produce it. “We all eat food yet many people don’t automatically make the connection between what’s on their plate and the commitment and care that goes into raising livestock, growing crops or processing food,” said
Crystal Mackay, CEO of Farm and Food Care Canada, a national charity committed to building public trust and confidence in food and farming in Canada. In the 1930s, more than 90 per cent of Canadians had a connection to agriculture. Today, it’s less than three per cent, according to Statistics Canada census information. “Every link in the food production chain – from the farm to the grocery store and restaurant – plays a vital role in bringing food to your table every day,” said Mackay, whose group
organized the summit. “Canada’s Agriculture Day is an opportunity to get involved, celebrate and be a part of the conversation about food and farming.” Candace Hill, manager of Agriculture More Than Ever, said Canada’s Agriculture Day complements the industryled initiative that has attracted over 470 partner organizations and 2,100 individuals committed to creating positive perceptions of agriculture. Launched more than four years ago, Agriculture More Than Ever’s goal is to encourage those involved in
agriculture to speak up and speak positively about the industry. “It’s all about showing our love, pride and passion for an industry that puts food on our tables,” Hill said. “We want to give everyone the opportunity to be part of something big and important.” Hill encourages the industry, organizations and individuals to mark the date on calendars and come up with their own ideas and activities to promote and celebrate Canadian agriculture. For more information, visit AgDay.ca or follow us on Twitter at #CdnAgDay.

in surgery, as well as personal camps and retreat. Whether in the dark or not, everyone had to go to an alternate location usually because an event had occurred such as enemy onslaught or even extreme weather/ environmental conditions. While no one ever desired to have to BUG OUT, it was nonetheless what they had to do in an emergency, which leads to today’s question — do you have a safe place you can take your family in case of an emergency? Actually it is more than
that, but a mindset that says we know where we will go and what we will need and more. Whether it’s a place to go to if the power were out for many days in the winter or at least a plan to endure such an event, the mindset is that you DO have a plan. This week we all are reeling from the recent tornado that came rather close. Down in the lower United States in Tornado Alley, no one is new to this kind of event and most people have a plan. This plan may include a place such as an underground shelter, food, medical supplies, sleeping bags, clothes, radio, important papers, batteries, and more. This is

They would have to grab any or all medical goods and gear, patients — sick or

no different for us but while tornado is certainly rare, it is no less a topic to ignore. Perhaps having some camping supplies that are always in a ready place, a key to a friend’s cabin or a camping spot not too far away but would likely be safe. Much like having an escape plan for a burning building, plan out what everybody is going to grab and where everyone will meet so that it has been discussed in advance at least once. A simple thing we offer at Problem Solved is called a Bug out bag for such an occasion. It is simply a backpack filled with enough supplies to sustain yourself
for at least 3 days and cost about $90. Consider our friends in Fort MacMurray and how quickly you could be told you have to leave your home and how little you can actually take. Keep some supplies and clothes packed and ready, it costs so little and will give you a lot of peace of mind when there is probably a reason to panic. The team at Problem Solved is sincerely sorry and praying for anyone who was affected by the recent storm and urges everyone to have a plan. Be safe out there. We are posting additional information on FB on this topic. For more info, check

Stop AquaƟc Invasive Species
Zebra mussels on boat prop
Zebra mussels
It’s boaƟng season, and the Assiniboine Watershed Stewardship AssociaƟon along with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment would like to remind everyone to help stop the spread of aquaƟc invasive species. These species are not naƟve to Saskatchewan and could destroy the lake and river ecosystems we all enjoy!
It’s important to always inspect watercraŌ, trailers and any other equipment that has come into contact with water from outside the province for the presence of aquaƟc invasive species. Species like zebra mussels can aƩach themselves and can go unnoƟced if the equipment is not inspected aŌer it leaves the water. Please do your part.
You can help protect Saskatchewan waterways from aquaƟc invasive species.
Clean, Drain and Dry all watercraŌ and equipment.

I have read that over 5,000 cases of meat allergy have been estimated in the United States, mostly in the Southeast. The allergy is most often caused by a bite of the Lone Star tick, which carries the carbohydrate alpha-gal. If introduced into the bloodstream, it can cause a reaction from eating meat, especially beef, pork and lamb. Interestingly, it is much more likely in people with blood types A and O. It isn’t yet clear if the allergy will be temporary or long-lasting, but it can be very severe, and people who develop this allergy should avoid meat and carry an epi-

nephrine device in case of exposure. DEAR DR. ROACH: A few days ago, I heard a report on breast cancer recurrence. I had cancer in my left breast in 1995, and on my right side in 2003. What are your thoughts on the subject? There is no history of breast cancer in my family. — P.M. ANSWER: Breast cancer sometimes runs in families, but 70 percent to 80 percent of women with breast cancer have no family history. Once a woman has had breast cancer, she is at higher risk for developing a second breast cancer. Survivors of breast cancer should get regu-
lar physical exams and mammograms. A team of researchers from Johns Hopkins University recently published a study promising that in the near future, a new type of blood test may be able to identify DNA from breast cancer cells and find recurrence much earlier than current methods. If confirmed, this would be a big relief to the many women (and a few men) with breast cancer at risk for recurrence. DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you please address stem-cell treatment for a torn rotator cuff? My son is facing his second surgery for this problem and is consid-
ering stem-cell treatment instead. He had such terrible pain from surgery the first time. — L.P. ANSWER: A torn rotator cuff is a common sports injury in athletes. Complete tears usually are repaired surgically. A new surgical technique is to inject the body’s own stem cells (obtained from the bone marrow) to help promote healing. It is too new of a technique for me to be able to compare it with standard surgical therapy, but the preliminary studies are very promising. I often have said that only an individual’s surgeon can decide the right surgical procedure, based on far more infor-
mation than we could include in this column. It’s really true that you never trust anyone quite the way you trust your surgeon. There are surgeons who are using the stem-cell technique, and it would be reasonable to get a consultation with one of them. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. Along with the strong interest in Saskatchewan Farm Land from Canadian Buyers, interest from Foreign Buyers continues as well. In order to purchase Saskatchewan Farm Land, the requirement for the Buyer to be a Canadian Citizen and/or Permanent Resident, continues to exist. Non-Canadians, by legislation, are restricted to no more than 10 acres. As there is an extensive amount of information required from potential Immigrants, much of which must be received directly from their Country of Origin, the process for receiving Canadian Citizenship may be a lengthy one. While having this process completed in a year is possible, it often takes as long as 2 years or more. In order to get started a good option is through the Saskatchewan Immigration Nominee Program which has been developed to help Immigrants fast track their application with the Federal Immigration department. Information for those wanting to start the process should visit both the Saskatchewan and Federal websites. It should be noted that even once Citizenship status has been granted, the actual purchase of a Farm may continue to take time. This often is due to the time required for the Immigrant to receive their money from their Country of Origin. While we here in Canada take for granted the ability to move our money in and out of the Country at will, the same is not true for all Countries. Speaking with an Immigrant from South Africa they pointed out a long process that may take 2 years or more before receiving all of their funds! While hearing of Foreigners Immigrating to our Country and purchasing Farms is common, we often do not realize the extensive process these people go through to make it a reality. Certainly gives one a greater appreciation of what our forefathers went through back in the day!

I got to know her through publicist Esme Chandlee, because Noel was handling the fan mail of Esme’s client Tom Selleck. We had many lunches together, and she was always a delight. Noel also appeared in the 1978 “Superman” film with Christopher Reeve (as Lois Lane’s mother) and then again in 1991 series “Superboy.” In 2010, the real-life city of Metropolis, Illinois, where she once lived, unveiled a life-size bronze statue of Lois Lane modeled after her. Tyler Henry, a smash hit with “Hollywood Medium” on the E! network (which airs “Tyler Henry — Hollywood Medium’s Top Ten” Aug. 10 and premieres season 2 on Aug. 17), is the real deal. On a recent trip to New York City to finalize his book deal with Simon
& Schuster, “Between Two Worlds, Lesson from the Other Side” (now available for pre-order at Amazon, Kindle and Nook), he encountered a problem. Apparently, he had difficulty sleeping because he “heard so many voices from the other side,” which kept him awake. In a city the size of New York, with so many people, that problem was intensified, and Tyler had to be moved to a corner room on the top floor of The London Hotel. Tyler, only 20 years of age and under 6 feet tall, was truly a small medium at large in the Big Apple!

So, yeah, you can bet it will be back for another season. “The Powerpuff Girls” made its inaugural appearance at San Diego Comic-Con this past July with its first-ever panel and an immersive Townsvilleinspired booth. “’The Powerpuff Girls’ is on a momentous run with its first Emmy nod, a debut appearance at one of the biggest fan events of the year, and now a second-season green light,” said Rob Sorcher,

Can you tell me what else he’s been up to? — Dee Dee S., Deerfield Beach, Florida A: Craig currently stars in the Sundance Festival award-winning indie film — Craig himself won a Sundance Jury Award for acting — called “Morris From America.” The movie is

no avail. Not a single wild mushroom in sight. “Someone has found my place!” she exclaimed, rather bewildered. Still enjoying the peacefulness, earthy smells and beauty of the surroundings, we laughed our way home, empty baskets in hand. Always the generous hostess, she bought some chanterelles at a local market so that I could taste the delicacy, deftly prepared with butter and sweet onions. Now I make it a point to get a good dose of nature’s own all summer long. Whether it’s something to see, hear, smell, taste or touch, discoveries await everyone in the wild ... and your own backyard. Here are some ideas for your family: * Forage for ramps (wild leeks) in woodsy areas. Chop and saute
with butter for a gourmet addition to omelets, meats and fish. * Pick dandelions and make a chain necklace. * Pick wild raspberries, blackberries or blueberries. Make jam and bake a pie or cobbler for a sweet treat. * Listen for ducks, frogs and owls. Record the sounds and make a game of identifying them back home. * Look for and identify bugs under a log or rock, then look up to discover an eagle or hawk’s nest. Take photos for a summer digital scrapbook. * Collect fallen pinecones, acorns and dried pods for natural crafttime supplies. * Grow your own: Plant native plants in your yard that you purchase in local garden centers. If they have thrived in your area for hundreds of years, they’ll no doubt
adapt well under your care. IMPORTANT NOTE: Learn from a trained guide about proper identification of food and plants in the wild, as many are poisonous and irritating to the skin. Be sure it is legal to pick or collect specific items before your expedition; stay on designated trails, and follow conservation ethics. Katie’s mother died in a car accident that left her father (Russell Crowe), an acclaimed novelist, with a debilitating condition. Dad’s institutionalization and a custody battle with Katie’s aunt (Diane Kruger) gave the adult Katie some serious attachment issues — issues that she may get over through her relationship with a very dad-like suitor played by Aaron Paul. The best thing about the movie is its cast, and the worst is its script. Tucked in different subplots you’ll also find Octavia Spencer, Quvenzhane Wallis and Jane Fonda. The problem is that each of these subplots is full of drippy, heavy-handed dialog suspended by a pop-psychology illustration of daddy day to make sure it’s something they will eat. You also can reference it when meal-planning, so you don’t repeat a meal at home that the kids have had at school. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Shannon slips off of the wagon, shags a hotel guest and winds up with a dead body for her and Martha to get rid of. That’s the setup for this rather grimy comedy where funny performers struggle to find the right note. Fred Armisen, Aubrey Plaza and Molly Shannon all make appearances, but the cringes far outnumber the laughs. “Baskin” (NR) — Horror fans can rally around this Turkish directorial debut that draws on many classic influences and offers new twists — along with

SPINACH SALAD WITH BACON AND EGG Perfect for brunch, lunch and dinner, this spinach salad incorporates the saltiness of bacon and sweetness of sauteed onions to create a balanced meal. •8 slices thick-cut smoked bacon •1 package button mushrooms •1 medium red onion •4 large eggs •2-1/2 tablespoons red wine vinegar •1 tablespoon extravirgin olive oil •1-1/2 teaspoons honey Dijon mustard •1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt •12 cups baby spinach •12 ounces mixed cherry tomatoes In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove from pan with a slotted spoon; drain on a paper towel. Reserve 3 tablespoon of bacon drippings; discard remainder. Break up bacon into bite-size pieces when bacon is cool enough to handle. Heat 1-1/2 tablespoons of bacon drippings in the same skillet over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and cook 4 to 6 minutes, stirring frequently, until lightly browned. Add onion; cook 1 to 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Transfer mixture to a large mixing bowl. Make poached eggs: Fill a large saucepan
with 3 inches of water. Add 1 tablespoon white vinegar (this helps whites coagulate). Bring to a gentle simmer. Crack each egg into a small cup, then slide eggs, one at a time, into water. Cook 5 to 7 minutes, adjusting heat accordingly to keep at a gentle simmer, until whites are set and yolks are slightly runny. Poach longer if you like firmer yolks. Remove eggs with a slotted spoon. Transfer eggs to a paper towel. In same skillet over medium heat, whisk red wine vinegar, remaining 1-1/2 tablespoons bacon drippings, olive oil, mustard and salt until wellblended and warmedthrough. Add spinach to mushroom mixture in bowl and pour warm dressing over; toss to coat. Add tomatoes and reserved bacon pieces. Divide salad into 4 servings. Top each with a poached egg; season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. SYRUPY BANANA-NUT FRENCH TOAST BAKE A great make-ahead brunch recipe. •2 tablespoons vanilla extract •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •1/2 cup sliced almonds or coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans In microwave-safe small bowl, heat butter in microwave oven on High for 1 minute or until melted. Stir sugar into butter until moistened. With fingertips, press sugar mixture onto bottom of 13- by 9-inch glass baking dish. (It’s OK if mixture does not cover bottom.) Spread fruit over sugar mixture; top with bread slices, cut sides down. In medium bowl, with whisk, beat eggs; whisk in milk, vanilla and cinnamon. Slowly pour milk mixture over bread; press bread down to absorb egg mixture. Sprinkle with nuts. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight. Heat oven to 350 F. Remove plastic wrap from baking dish. Bake, uncovered, 45 to 50 minutes or until bread is golden brown and knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Try something new with a BBQ staple While hot dogs and hamburgers garner the bulk of the backyard barbecue attention, side dishes are also staples at such gatherings. One summertime favorite is potato salad, a filling side that’s ideal for informal gatherings like barbecues and picnics. Many people rely on store-bought potato salad, but home cooks can expand their potato salad horizons by making their own and experimenting with unique takes that can impress guests. This summer, consider serving up the following recipe for “Japanese Potato Salad” from Marnie Hanel, Andrea Slonecker and Jen Stevenson’s “The Picnic: Recipes and
Inspiration from Basket to Blanket” (Artisan).
and light green parts only, thinly sliced
JAPANESE POTATO SALAD Serves 4 to 6 •Fine sea salt •2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, scrubbed •1 cup D.I.Y. Mayonnaise or storebought, preferably Kewpie brand Japanese mayonnaise •2 tablespoons rice vinegar •2 large carrots, peeled and thinly sliced diagonally •1 cup fresh or frozen shelled edamame •1 Japanese or English cucumber, halved lengthwise and very thinly sliced •4 green onions, white
Fill a large saucepan two-thirds full with water and season generously with salt. Peel the potatoes, cut them into 2-inch chunks, and drop them into the water. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to maintain a gentle simmer and cook until the potatoes are very tender, 10 to 15 minutes. Drain in a colander and set aside for 5 minutes to steam dry. While the potatoes are still hot, mash them using a ricer, food mill or potato masher. Add the mayonnaise, vinegar and 1⁄2 teaspoon salt to the warm potatoes and whip with a wood-
en spoon until light and fluffy. Set aside to cool. Meanwhile, fill a small saucepan with water, season it generously with salt and bring it to a boil over high heat. Add the carrots and edamame and cook until crisptender, about 3 minutes. Drain, rinse under cold water and dry well. Put the cucumbers in a bowl and sprinkle with 1⁄2 teaspoon salt. Toss to coat evenly and set aside for 15 minutes. Wrap the cucumbers in a kitchen towel or paper towels and squeeze out as much liquid as you can. Add the cucumbers, carrots, edamame, and green onions to the cooled potato mixture and stir to combine well.
Taste and adjust the seasoning. Cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days. D.I.Y. MAYONNAISE Makes 1-1⁄3 cups •2 large egg yolks (preferably fresh eggs from a farmer’s market) •2 teaspoons cider vinegar •1 teaspoon Dijon mustard •1⁄2 teaspoon fine sea salt •3⁄4 cup vegetable oil •1⁄4 cup mild extravirgin olive oil •2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice •Pinch of freshly ground pepper Put the egg yolks, vinegar, mustard, and salt in a food processor and pulse until combined. Scrape
the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula as needed. With the motor running, begin adding the vegetable oil in a slow stream, then the olive oil, until it emulsifies and thickens. Scrape the sides of the bowl again. When the emulsion has formed, begin adding the oil in a faster stream until it is all incorporated. If at any point after the emulsion forms the mayonnaise becomes too thick, add about 1⁄2 teaspoon of the lemon juice to loosen it, and continue. To finish, pulse in the lemon juice and pepper, then taste and adjust the seasonings. Store the mayonnaise for up to 1 week in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Top barbecue trends this summer While cabbage might not be the first food people think of when they think of grilling, that does not mean cabbage and the foods that fall under the cabbage umbrella cannot be grilled. Bok choy is part of the cabbage family and tastes excellent when grilled. If grilled bok choy appeals to your taste buds, consider firing up the grill and preparing the following recipe for “Blackened Beef with Thai Chile Noodles and Baby Bok Choy” from Karen Adler and Judith Fertig’s “The Gardener & The Grill” (Running Press). BLACKENED BEEF WITH THAI CHILE NOODLES AND BABY BOK CHOY Serves 4 Thai Chile Noodles •1⁄4 cup olive oil •1 tablespoon chile oil (available at Asian mar-
kets), optional •1⁄4 cup seasoned rice vinegar •2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint leaves •2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves •1 small chile pepper of your choice, seeded and minced •1 garlic clove, minced •8 ounces rice noodles or linguine, cooked according to package directions •1⁄4 cup chopped, roasted peanuts Bok Choy and Steak •2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil •2 tablespoons vegetable oil •8 whole baby bok choy or 2 large heads bok choy, cut into quarters •1 - 12-ounce steak, 1-1⁄2-inch-thick boneless top sirloin steak •2 tablespoons Red
Hot Blackened Seasoning (see below) •Fine kosher or sea salt to taste To make the noodles, combine the olive oil, chile oil, vinegar, herbs, chile, and garlic in a large bowl. Toss the cooked noodles with the dressing. Sprinkle on the peanuts and toss again. Set aside. Prepare a hot fire in your grill. Combine the sesame and vegetable oils in a small bowl. Brush the bok choy with this mixture, then the steak. Sprinkle
Did you know? The excitement of driving a new car off of the lot extends beyond the thrill of having a new set of wheels to show off. Some people just love the smell of a new car. But while that aroma may be pleasant to the olfactory senses, it may be wise to eliminate the smell as soon as possible. According to a 2012 study from the nonprofit Ecology Center and HealthyStuff.org, that “new car smell” may include toxic fumes from chemicals used to create the car’s interior. There are some indications that
the smell is generated from more than 50 volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, that are off-gassing in a relatively confined space. While the potential dangers of breathing in all of these compounds continues to be studied, the flame retardants and plastics used in cars have been linked to illnesses when they have been used in other applications. To speed up the process of removing VOCs from a car, open all of the windows and let it sit in the hot sun. Also, pur-

the Blackened Seasoning on the beef. Grill the steak for 3-1⁄2 to 4 minutes per side for medium-rare (130 F), or 5 minutes per side for medium (140 F). Grill the bok choy for 2 to 3 minutes per side, turning once, or until you have good grill marks and the vegetables have begun to soften. Slice the steak thinly. Place a serving of noodles in 4 bowls and top with the steak and bok choy. Serve immediately.

Pete Rose follows me on Twitter now, or at least he retweeted something I wrote about him, and that’s good enough for me. I’m also friends on Facebook with Jenny Mollen and Willie
Nelson, and depending on which generation you talk to, nobody knows anyone I just talked about. (You can follow me too @sportingview ... and unlike here, I am a man of few words there.) In case you missed the past two or three decades, Pete Rose was a real son of a gun who hustled and played baseball with the sort of tenacity that only a few other players and marauding bands
of Vikings could understand or match. He is Major League Baseball’s undisputed hit king. He is not in the Hall of Fame because he was banned from baseball for betting on baseball games, something every single baseball player has known not to do since the Taft administration. The guy completely blew it, yet the man persists to somehow remain in the news. How many
longer the water is in storage. These include a chemical called antimony, a white metallic element that in small doses can cause nausea, diz-
ziness and depression. In large doses, antimony can be fatal. Bottled water that is sitting in a hot area can leach the chemicals even faster.
Did you know? Many people opt for bottled water hoping to avoid the potential pathogens lurking inside of regular tap water. But consuming bottled water contributes to the evergrowing problem of discarded plastic bottles and other waste, and you may not be getting what you think when choosing bottled water over tap water. The National Resources Defense Council says sales of bottled water have tripled in the past 10 years to around $4 billion per year, fueled largely on the premise that bottled water comes from crystal-clean springs or untouched glaciers. According to U.S. government estimates and industry experts, as much as 40 percent of bottled water is derived from tap water. The NRDC says even one brand of “spring water” was found to come from a well in an industrial facility’s parking lot near a hazardous waste dump. Also, many bottled waters are exempt from the Food and Drug Administrations bottled water standards because the FDA says its rules do not apply to water packaged and sold within the same state. When waters are covered and tested, they may be subject to weaker regulations than regular tap water. What’s more, even if bottled water is thoroughly filtered, data suggests that plastic bottles could be putting your health at risk. According to the organization Ban the Bottle, water contained in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles can absorb chemicals from the plastic the

Yankees (who completely disrespect him, by the way), once hit a kajillion home runs in the minor leagues. Is he the home run king? Ichiro is all class and truly, I love watching him play. He is a Hall of Famer, but he is not the hit king. That man is Pete Rose. This is probably not the last time I say this, but it’s good to forgive. It’s time for Pete Rose to enter the Hall or be allowed to participate in Old Timer’s or Cincinnati Wiffleball games. No offense to Ichiro, but it is well past time for our pastime to set the record straight once and for all. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

the hits he made here, mathematics show that he has more professional base hits than Pete Rose. On a slow news day, there are reputable news organizations that will make a case for Ichiro being the all-time hit king. That is, of course, totally preposterous. I know guys who bet on Wiffleball games ... sure, it takes them out of the running for Cooperstown, but they get paid, and I know guys who throw perfect games every time I’m not in the opposing team’s lineup. Does that make them pros, worthy of being compared to Koufax and Walter Johnson? Tony Lazzeri, the Hall of Fame second baseman for the

It seems like every other week he is inducted into the Reds’ Hall of Fame, Cincinnati’s Hall of Fame, Ohio’s Hall of Fame, the guy down the street’s Hall of Fame ... Pokemon Go should make him one of their monsters because he has a statue or plaque in just about every major park in the Buckeye State. He has to have several hundred Rotary Club coffee mugs. Then along comes Ichiro Suzuki. By the time you read this, Ichiro will have reached the 3,000 hit mark in Major League Baseball. If you were to add up the hits he made in Japan with

Potential side effects of cancer treatments
Treatments for breast cancer have evolved considerably in recent years. When breast cancer is detected early enough to be categorized as stage 0 or stage I, the five-year survival rate is 100 percent. That’s a testament to the hard work of cancer researchers who continue to develop effective ways to treat and defeat breast cancer. As effective as cancer treatments can be, breast cancer patients may still experience some side effects during treatment. Side effects may depend on which course of treatment cancer patients and their physicians pursue, but the following are some potential
side effects breast cancer patients may encounter during treatment.
Armpit discomfort According to Breastcancer.org, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing up-todate information about breast cancer, patients may develop armpit discomfort after lumpectomy, mastectomy or lymph node removal surgeries. This discomfort may be characterized by pain, swelling, tenderness, or numbness. The numbness may result when nerves in the armpit are cut during surgery, while tenderness or swelling may occur when surgeons have to remove some of
the tissue under the surface of the skin. Patients who receive radiation therapy may develop irritation or soreness in the armpit because the skin of the armpit is so close to the breast. Constipation Some breast cancer patients experience constipation because their eating and exercise habits change during treatment. Constipation is a side effect of pain medications such as ibuprofen, so breast cancer patients relying on medication to alleviate some of the pain associated with their disease and treatment may experience constipation as a result. Chemotherapy and hormonal therapy are two breast cancer treatments known to cause constipation as well. Dry skin During treatment, breast cancer patients may experience dry skin that is uncomfortable and itchy. This side effect has been linked to chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal therapy. Dry skin tends to last as long as patients are in treatment, gradually subsiding once treatment has been completed.
Endometriosis Endometriosis occurs when the cells that make up the endometrium, or the lining of the uterus, grow outside of the uterus. Hormonal therapy may stimulate the growth of endometrial cells, triggering endometriosis, which is most often found on or under the ovaries, behind the uterus or on the bowels or bladder. Endometriosis may cause pain, fertility problems or heavy menstrual periods. Physicians who suspect their patients have developed endometriosis may perform a laparoscopy, a surgical procedure in which a small cut is made over the abdomen. Once that cut is made, the surgeon will insert a thin tube equipped with a viewing instrument so
he or she can look inside the uterus to determine if endometriosis has developed. Memory loss Breast cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy and hormonal therapy may contribute to memory loss. Ovarian removal or shutdown may also result in memory loss. Memory loss may also result from medications taken during breast
cancer treatment. Breast cancer patients who plan to continue working during treatment should discuss with their physicians how to manage potential memory loss and may benefit from informing their employers about the potential for treatment-related memory loss. More information about potential breast cancer treatment side effects is available at www.breastcancer.org.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve tried to work in obedience training with my puppy, “Spaetzle,” during her morning and evening walks, because I read somewhere that this is the most efficient way to do it. But she doesn’t seem to pay attention, and I feel like we’re not getting very far. Am I
not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in doing something wrong? — Don in Chapel Hill, North Carolina DEAR DON: It’s not that you’re doing anything wrong, it’s that maybe training during walks isn’t right for Spaetzle. Observe your dog throughout the day for a few days. Are there times when she appears to be more receptive to your commands? More responsive? Are there times when she is really hyper and times when she is very relaxed? Take note of these behaviors and the time of day when they seem more common. Then, adjust your behavior training to take place during these times and see how she responds. Some dogs are extremely focused on certain core tasks, like, “Hey, it’s time to eat. I’m pretty sure it’s time to feed me. I need to eat. I can’t think of anything else until you feed me!” BAKER’S DOZEN GLUTEN FREE BREAD CLUB *PURCHASE TWELVE LOAVES OF GLUTEN FREE BREAD AND RECEIVE YOUR THIRTEENTH FREE* (Cannot be combined with any other offer)

• Roto-Rooter, the plumbing and drain service company, conducts
an annual survey of its technicians to find out what sorts of things are being found in customers’ pipes. Among the more interesting items over the years have been Barbies, false teeth, TV remotes, alligators and six-packs of beer. • Over the past 100 years, the life expectancy of the average American has risen from 47 to 78. • Those who study such things say that, on a percapita basis, Canadians
consume more macaroni and cheese than citizens of any other country in the world. • Railroads in Japan have a persistent problem: turtles. It seems the reptiles have a habit of wandering onto the tracks, and many of them get stuck between the switching rails. This prevents the switches from closing properly, causing train accidents. To address the problem, the West Japan Railway
Company consulted with the Suma Aqualife Park in Kobe; together, they created tunnels under the tracks to allow the turtles to pass freely without endangering railway passengers — or themselves. Thought for the Day: “English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment, and education — sometimes it’s sheer luck, like getting across the street.” — E.B. White
Or, when Spaetzle is out for her walk, she may be focused on finding the perfect places to pee or poop. That’s where her attention is going. So
more complex commands may go right past her. You can work on simpler behavioral training and commands throughout the day. During walks,
of course, is the best time to train her to heel, sit and stay. At treat times, teach a command before giving a treat. Train when the opportunity presents
itself. Most of all, be patient and encourage her, always. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.
