First Sask. land rights sale of 2016
Saskatchewan’s first sale in the 2016 calendar year of petroleum and natural gas rights raised $5.1 million in revenue for the province. This brings final land sale revenues for fiscal 2015-16 to $44.0 million. While land sale revenues show evidence of the current oil market cycle, industry continues to place a premium on the lands they are acquiring in Saskatchewan.
The province continues to be a preferred jurisdiction for conventional producers.
February’s sale averaged $444 per hectare, compared to Alberta’s latest sale that averaged $117 per hectare and British Columbia’s that averaged $76 per hectare. “Oil prices continue to have an impact on activity across western Canada, as industry exer-
cises caution in increasing their land inventories,” Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. “At the same time, Saskatchewan lands are at a premium, reflecting our reputation as the top jurisdiction in Canada, and among the top 10 in the world, for petroleum investment attractiveness.” The Weyburn-Estevan area led the way this sale, accounting for 80 per cent of the sale total.
Four parcels located west of Estevan received bonus bids totalling $2.1 million from Mammoth Land Services Ltd. The region has multiple zones of interest including the Torquay and Bakken Formations along with the Midale Beds of the Madison Group. The highest price on a per-hectare basis was $5,006. Mammoth Land Services Ltd. submitted a bid of $162,069 on a 32
hectare lease located south of Arcola. The Fraser Institute’s most recent annual Global Petroleum Survey of petroleum executives rated Saskatchewan number one in Canada and among the global top 10 in its rankings of attractive jurisdictions for investment in petroleum exploration and development. Saskatchewan scored highly in the 2015 survey
relative to other jurisdictions in regards to policy, investment and regulatory climate, geopolitical risk, administrative certainty, labour regulations and employment agreements, environmental regulations, trade barriers, taxation regime and quality of its geological database. The next sale of Crown petroleum and natural gas rights will be held on April 12, 2016.
You can now print your own vehicle registration SGI is enhancing convenience for customers with changes to vehicle registration certificates. Vehicle registrations can now be printed on plain white paper rather than special green card stock paper. This means customers who register a vehicle using SGI’s online service MySGI will no longer have to wait for their registration certificate in the mail – they can print it at home. Any customer with a MySGI account can also access
their registration certificate online, and print it off at any time – even if they didn’t renew online. “Customers have been asking for the ability to print off their vehicle registration certificate from the comfort of their home,” Minister Responsible for SGI Don McMorris said. “SGI is pleased to provide this option to help simplify the process.” The registration certificate is also changing. The customer’s address will no longer be printed
on it. This is a deterrent against potential criminal activity – an SGI survey found that 61 per cent of respondents leave their registration certificate in the glove box of their vehicle. If a vehicle is broken into and the address is noted on the registration this, often combined with the availability of a garage door opener, provides opportunity for thieves. “Removing the address from the registration certificate enhances security for custom-
ers,” McMorris said. Customers who visit a motor licence issuer in person to register their vehicle will also receive the registration certificate on plain white paper, once existing green card stock paper is used up. SGI consulted with law enforcement and other impacted stakeholders and received support for these changes. It’s estimated the change to plain white paper from card stock will save SGI $120,000 annually in paper costs
Premier presents well cleanup idea Premier Brad Wall has presented a proposal to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to support an Accelerated Well Cleanup Program (AWCP) in Saskatchewan. The proposal calls for $156 million in federal funding to help stimulate employment in the oil and gas service support sector by accelerating the clean-up of oil wells no longer capable of production. “Saskatchewan is home to a high concentration of energy service sector companies and their employees, many of whom are now out of work,” Wall said. “These are the professionals who are best suited to well cleanup.” Despite net employment growth of 5,200 new jobs in Saskatchewan over the past year, the resource sector has lost 1,900 jobs during that same period. “The Accelerated Well Cleanup Program will stimulate economic activity and job creation while at the same time delivering environmental benefits,” said Wall. “This is responsible resource development and would provide work for a lot of people in the oil service sector who have felt the impact of the drop in the oil price.” The AWCP would accelerate the decommissioning and reclamation of 1,000 wells non-producing wells over the next two years and generate an estimated 1,200 direct and indirect jobs in the oil and gas support industry.
“This program will create much needed job growth in the sector at this challenging time and most importantly, eliminate ongoing fugitive emissions from nonproductive wells,” said Dan Cugnet, Chairman of Valleyview Petroleums Ltd, an exploration and production company based in Weyburn that typically employs between 20 and 80 people, depending on the project. “As an employer in the energy sector, I support and applaud Premier Wall and the Government of Saskatchewan for identifying the benefits of a program like this for the sector and ultimately all Canadians.” Reclamation activities include environmental site assessment, the safe removal and disposal of old equipment, the remediation of oil and salt water spills, the restoration and re-contouring of the site, and the re-vegetation of the land. Further benefits of well decommissioning include: •Eliminating fugitive emissions of greenhouse gases including methane; •Remediating any environmental impacts that might have occurred during well operations; •Restoring agricultural land and critical habitat. Wall said he has spoken with and written to Prime Minister Trudeau about this proposal. “The federal government has indicated they are considering this proposal and I look forward to a favourable response,” Wall said.

Many things change as we age
This Week Marketplace | February 19, 2016
Aging is accompanied by a number of physical changes. Some of these changes, such as vision impairment or loss of hearing, are anticipated, while others may arrive unexpectedly. One condition many adults unexpectedly encounter is anemia. While anemia is common in older adults and its prevalence increases with age, it is not a condition that is widely considered part of the aging process.

Anemia is often a symptom of a hidden problem that needs to be addressed promptly. Anemia is one of the most common blood disorders, affecting more than three million Americans, says the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The American Society of Hematology notes that anemia is characterized by insufficient levels of red blood cells in the blood. Anemia also occurs when red blood cells, which are respon-
sible for carrying oxygen to the various organs and tissues throughout the body, are not functioning properly. Very often the signs of anemia are overlooked or go unnoticed until a blood test determines low hemoglobin (Hb) or hematocrit (HCT) concentrations. Some people discover they have anemia as they attempt to donate blood, at which time their red blood cell count is found to be inadequate. When the
body lacks oxygen, any number of the following symptoms may be experienced: • weakness • dizziness • extreme fatigue • shortness of breath • fast or irregular heartbeat • pale or yellow skin • cold hands or feet Frequently, existing disorders or conditions, such as congestive heart failure, are made worse by anemia. But unless
doctors specifically consider anemia as a possible cause of symptoms, its presence can go undiagnosed. The American Academy of Family Physicians says the most common causes of anemia among older men and women include chronic diseases and iron deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency, folate deficiency, gastrointestinal bleeding, and myelodysplastic syndrome are other causes of anemia.
The main way to treat anemia is to discover its source and reverse the outcomes.

Hurry hard The Tonkin Curling Club operates a two-sheet curling complex located 10 mins east of Yorkton. Mens & Ladies leagues start the beginning of November and run until the end of February. A Ladies Bonspiel was hosted in January, a men’s event earlier this month with Team Nagy taking the First Event, Team Leflas the Second Event, Team McDougall the Third Event and Team Satterthwaite the Fourth. A Windup Bonspiel will be held Feb. 25-27.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My mixed breed dog, “Jessup,” is absolutely terrified of my two cats. As soon as he notices both of them in the room with him, he yelps and runs off to another room with his tail between his legs. I have never seen any other interaction between them, good or bad. Jessup is a rescue dog, and I wonder if something in his past is causing this. Is there any way to get him past his fear of cats? — Jamie in Sioux Falls, South Dakota DEAR JAMIE: I suspect the same thing: Jessup had a bad experience with a cat in the past, and the memory still brings up fear. I don’t know that he can ever completely get past that fear, but perhaps you can reduce his flight reaction. If the cats aren’t at all bothered by his presence and are generally pretty mellow (for cats, anyway), you can try to desensitize Jessup somewhat.
Do this by gradually reintroducing all the pets into one room. You’ll need a helper for this. First, bring in Jessup and command him to sit or lie down and stay next to you. Keep a supply of treats in your pocket. Next, have your helper bring in one of the cats, cradled in their arms or, if necessary, in a carrier. They should sit down across the room where Jessup can see them. If and when Jessup begins
to react, tell him to sit and stay. Give him a treat if he obeys. Do this for only a minute or so at first, and gradually extend the time each day. Avoid getting frustrated. If you can get Jessup to stay just a short time by your side and then calmly leave the room, that would be a big victory.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 48-year-old, athletically fit man with excessive body hair on my back, chest and arms. I see that the younger generation of men at the gyms, pools and beaches seem to all groom (shave) their body hair for better appearance. I started trimming down but have not fully shaved. My con-
cern is whether, when you cut hair, it grows faster. When I’m in my upper 60s or 70s and decide to stop, will my body hair grow to 4 inches long? Does your body hair continue to grow at a normal rate when you’re older, or does it slow down? Please advise. — M.C. ANSWER: No, it’s a myth that cutting or shaving hair makes it grow faster. It certainly might seem to come in more coarsely, since the cut hair under the surface of the skin is thick. But there is no effect on hair growth. Hair growth rates stay roughly the same throughout adulthood. I am aware that the
By Cindy Elavsky Q: I am so happy that “Blindspot” has been renewed for another season but bummed that one of my favorite actors, Johnny Whitworth, was killed off before we could find out more about him. Was he really killed, and will we see more of him on the show? Where else can I get my Johnny fix? — Isabel T., via email A: I spoke with Johnny recently, and this is what he told me about “Blindspot”: “There’s not much I can say about ‘Blindspot’ because I’m not allowed to. I know that I got killed and I don’t know my name. But I know that there has been the promise of learning my character’s name. I don’t know how
Johnny Whitworth that gets done, when that gets done, where that gets done, or in what form that gets done.” If you want to catch Johnny on the big screen, his new movie, “Bad Hurt,” is set for release Feb. 12. The film (based on a true story) takes place in 1999 and centers on the Kendall family, who are battling emotional demons while caring for one child with special needs and another (Johnny’s character, Kent) with PTSD and addiction. Johnny says “Bad
current trend is for hairless-appearing skin. However, I see a lot of people with infections from shaving. If you do shave, use plenty of mild shaving cream or gel, always use a new, sharp razor, and use a soothing aftershave cream or lotion to help close the pores after shaving. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old male in good health. I take a 40-mg simvastatin and a 150-mcg levothyroxine. I exercise three times a week — one hour with weights and one hour of aerobics (elliptical and treadmill). On the treadmill, I go from a speed of 3.5 for 25 seconds to
6.0 for 25 seconds. My heart rate goes from 89 to 170 (sometimes 165 to 178) but drops back to about 89 when I return to the slower speed. I have heard that your exercise heart rate should be 212 minus your age times 80 percent. That would be 101. Does my 170 for 25 seconds sound OK? — E.N.W. ANSWER: No, that sounds too fast for an 86-year-old. The formula you mention is one frequently stated, and it isn’t particularly accurate, since there is a great deal of individual variation. But 170 is very fast for an 86-year-old. I wonder if it’s accurate. A
pulse monitor, using electrical impulses, is the most accurate, but even these can be fooled by electrical interference. If it really is so fast, I would worry about an exerciseinduced tachycardia, and a visit to your doctor or cardiologist would be a good idea, especially if you are having symptoms of chest discomfort or shortness of breath.
ANSWER: Most of the studies showing benefits of nuts included peanuts as well. Peanuts prob-
ably have the same benefits as tree nuts. Unfortunately, many people are allergic to nuts, and many to peanuts. Those people can’t get the benefits of eating nuts, as it is unsafe, even life-threatening on occasion. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.
Hurt” is a film he is especially proud of and hopes everyone will go see. “I feel very blessed to have been a part of this movie. It’s old moviemaking. It’s heartfelt and dramatic and real — and the performances are phenomenal. Michael Harney, who plays my father, and Karen Allen, who plays the mother, are pillars of this craft of acting. They are so moving. “I hope people see this movie, because Hollywood doesn’t make this kind that much anymore. The reason I got into this business was because of films like this. It’s a heart-wrenching drama, but as it progresses, it has an uplifting storytelling element to it, to where when you leave the theater, you feel emotionally tortured — gutted — yet good.” Q: When will “House of Cards” be back? — Linda F. in Washington
A: The highly anticipated season four premiere of the political thriller starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright premieres March 4 on Netflix, where you can either binge on all 10 episodes at once, or savor each episode like a fine wine and spread out your viewing. I also can tell you that “Grace & Frankie” returns May
6 for its second season, and “Orange Is the New Black” has its fourth-season premiere June 17. Q: Is there going to be a sequel to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”? — Regina R., via email A: “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” hits theaters March 25, and it follows the story of Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett) as they weather
marriage problems, a troubled teenage daughter, and yet another big, fat Greek wedding. The movie also stars Ian Gomez, John Stamos, Joey Fatone and Rita Wilson. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Good Dinosaur” (PG) — In a timeline where dinosaurs avoided extinction and developed a little civilization, one young apatosaurus named Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) befriends a wild little mammal critter named Spot (a feral human child). The little dinosaur — and his pet boy — are taken from home by a violent storm, and learn to overcome fears against breathtaking animated backdrops of Western landscapes. It has all of the visual splendor we’ve come to expect from PIXAR, but the storytelling seems mighty pedestrian compared to what the studio has done in the past. It’s a
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Time is on your side in the early part of the week. But anything left undone by midweek will need to be put into rush mode. The weekend offers choices for you and someone special. TAURUS (April 30 to May 20) Finally getting credit for a contribution is nice for all you ideagenerating Ferdinands and Fernandas. But don’t sit on your laurels under
Scene from “The Good Dinosaur” surprisingly by-the-numbers tale of a lost boy trying to find his way, but it also includes a fun bit where Sam Elliott (whose voice has more Western tones than a Monument Valley sunset) voices a grizzled T-Rex rancher. “Spotlight” (R) — This based-on-a-true-story film gives a riveting and relevant look into the world of investiga-
tive journalism, without the pomp and bombast of sanctifying the investigators. The Boston Globe has a special section called Spotlight, reserved for longer-term, deep-dive stories. Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) leads a team including Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams as they take on the live-wire topic of child abuse in
the Catholic church, and the systems that keep it covered up. It’s an important movie, especially for the way it depicts journalists not as Saints of the Truth, but as passionate people doing a hard job. Keaton and crew are humble and open to admitting mistakes. The story is made that much more powerful by keeping the heroes
the cork tree. Use it as a first step to a bigger opportunity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Despite the progress made, a hint of doubt might set in. That’s OK. You need to stop and consider not only what you’re doing but also how you are doing. Make adjustments where needed. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The dreamer is dominant in the Moon
Child’s aspect, but a dollop of hardheaded practicality is coming up fast and jockeying for space. The challenge is to make room for both modes. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a good week for Leos and Leonas to start assessing what they’ve done and what they plan to do. Moving to a new environment — home or job-related — is a possibility for some Cats. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The week calls for Virgos to make tough decisions, but in a way that leaves the door open for changes. Ask for advice from someone who has been in the position you’re in now.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Disappointments are never easy to take, but you have the ability to learn from them and go on to success. Meanwhile, continue to build up your contacts. You’ll need them soon. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Things might still be going much too slowly to suit you. But you need the time to make sure they’re going in the right direction. It’s easier to make a course correction now rather than later. SAGITTARIUS
“Secret in Their Eyes” (R) — A group of counterterrorist investigators are shaken to the core when they find the daughter of one of their own has been brutally murdered. Jess (Julia Roberts) carries the grief with her for 13 years after her daughter’s killer is let go. Her colleague and friend Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) continued working on the case all that time, and brings a new lead to Jess and district attorney Claire (Nicole Kidman), setting off a violent vendetta. There’s tense drama and a stellar cast, but it’s unfortunately bogged down in the trappings of an overlong police procedural.

has been kidnapped, and the only one who can save him is his son (Kellan Lutz, Generic Action Guy). There’s a technoMacGuffin that could kill the whole Internet, so Generic Action Guy has gotta grimace and punch and shoot as best as he can until he fixes it. In all of 80 minutes, just about every cliche is checked off (bar fight, girl sidekick with romantic past, nightclub fight, warehouse standoff) and every one is left untouched and intact, like a hobbyist’s collection.
DOG OF THE WEEK “Extraction” (R) — A veteran CIA operative (Bruce Willis, looking like he’s still wondering why he got out of bed for this)
TV RELEASES “Doctor Who: The Husbands of River Song” “Jesus of Nazareth: The Complete Miniseries” “No Rin: The Complete Series” “Warehouse 13: The Complete Series” “Royal Shakespeare Company: The Merchant of Venice”
(November 22 to December 21) Showing some temperament at the way things are going is one way of getting your point across. Just don’t overdo it, or you risk turning away more-moderate supporters. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Things could change more quickly this week than you like. But don’t fret; you’ll most likely find that you’re up to the challenges. The weekend offers much-needed relaxation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Big
challenge coming up? Uncross those fingers and believe that you’re going to do well. And keep in mind that so many people have faith in your ability to succeed. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Testing the waters is a good way of learning about an opportunity before plunging right in. Ask more questions and be alert to any attempts to avoid giving complete answers. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making people — and animals, too — feel special and loved.

HOLLYWOOD — The recent Oscar controversy that caused many industry people of color to threaten to boycott this year’s awards was, as usual, fueled by headlinehungry media members. The Academy of Arts and Sciences is not responsible for the industry NOT casting more nonwhite actors in major roles that would be Oscarworthy. Thank heavens Whoopi Goldberg made that clear on “The View” by explaining, “We have this conversation every year, and it pisses me off. There’s not a lot of support for little companies that make movies that may be more diverse than anything else, but you can’t bitch about it just at Oscar time. “It’s not that the Academy members are deciding whether or not
PARSLEY-PESTO SALMON •1 cup chopped fresh parsley •1/4 cup olive oil •2 tablespoons lemon juice •Salt and black pepper •4 salmon steaks, about 3/4-inch thick (about 4 ounces each) Heat oven to 400 F. In blender or in food processor, with knife blade attached, puree parsley, oil, lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper until smooth. Coat salmon steaks with parsley mixture. In oven-safe 10-inch skillet over high heat, cook salmon until lightly browned on both sides, about 2 minutes. Place skillet in oven. Roast salmon until just opaque throughout, 8 to 10 minutes. Makes 4 main-dish servings. • Each serving: About 334 calories, 23g protein, 2g carbohydrate, 1g fiber, 21g total fat (4g saturated), 67mg cholesterol, 366mg sodium. ON THE SIDE:
winner herself, has said there is no way she will boycott the Oscars. “Hello Dolly” was originally planned to star Ethel Merman on Broadway in 1964, but Merman passed on it, not wanting to be tied to a show for more than six months. It then was offered to Broadway legend Mary Martin, who also turned it down. Carol Channing accepted the role and played Dolly Levi for more than 3,000 performances, winning a Tony Award in the process. When she left, Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey and Ethel Merman followed her. Mary Martin played Dolly for 794 performances in London, and Barbra Streisand starred in the film version in 1969. We’re telling you this because the show will now be revived on Broadway in 2017 starring none other than Bette Midler. If anything can revive her
Whoopi Goldberg to vote for something based on whether they feel like it’s a white movie or a black movie, the issue is that there aren’t enough movies with diverse casts getting financed and made.” She concluded, “The Oscars will continue to have a diversity problem until there are more movies made with people of color!” Whoopi, an Oscar
Watercress Salad: For each person, mix 2 teaspoons olive oil, a dash of vinegar or lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste. Add 1/8 teaspoon finely chopped garlic if desired. Add 1 cup watercress mixed with 2 cups milder-tasting greens, like romaine or butter lettuce. Toss until evenly coated.

It’s funny to hear Donald Trump give a stump speech about generals. “We need a Patton or a MacArthur. I always see our generals on TV, saying we can’t beat ISIS. Patton wouldn’t be on TV; Patton would have been too busy winning the war. And when he was done, he’d ask ‘Where to next?’ OK?” The scenario he presents has become a reliable applause line, except at, you know, the Pentagon, where one would surmise that the generals don’t care much for his assessment. Besides, what does Trump know about war? He all but dodged the draft during the Vietnam War, but he does know a thing or two about Generals. He used to own
them. While it may seem hard to believe now, there once was an alternative football league. Trump doesn’t like to talk about it very much, probably because the United States Football League was a “yuge” disaster. The story of its supposed “premier” franchise, the New Jersey Generals, does offer a pretty good character study of the businessman turned presidential candidate. The league was born in 1983 at the luxurious 21 Club in Manhattan, New York (in case some of you confused it with Manhattan, Kansas). The idea was to start a “made for TV” league that played in the spring and
early summer. It would focus more on the gameplay than stars, and it would be the first league to be televised on both network TV (ABC) and cable (ESPN). Trump, the guy everyone counted on being the voice of the league and owner of the New Jersey Generals, bailed at the last minute, citing his need to focus on building Trump Tower. After a losing inaugural season, but plenty of buzz due to the signing of Hershel Walker, Trump bought the team back in 1984 and promptly threw out the script. He signed/ stole QB Brian Sipe from the NFL, fired the head coach and dominated the back pages for a while as
word leaked that he was trying to hire Don Shula away from the Miami Dolphins. Instead, he hired former Jets coach Walt Michaels and sat back to watch them go 14-4 and lose in the first round of the playoffs. Not satisfied, Trump traded away Sipe and then signed Boston College QB Doug Flutie who, like Walker, was a former Heisman trophy winner. The next season, Walker smashed records and the Generals still lost in the first round. Up until that point, it was still a pretty enjoyable league. Jim Kelly, Steve Young, Doug Williams, Reggie White, Marcus Dupree, Coach Dick Vermeil ... there
were some good games (some are available on You Tube). Then, Trump went berserk. After turning the league into a money pit due to lavish spending, some owners walked away. Then teams started to merge. One day we woke up to find that the Houston Gamblers had merged with the Generals. The league started to turn into “the Art of the Deal.” Trump next convinced the other owners to move the league into fall, ostensibly to force the NFL to merge with the USFL. Then the USFL sued the NFL, claiming they had a monopoly. The judge agreed. The reward? Three dollars!
A21
The league folded, everyone went their separate ways, and Trump refuses to talk about the Generals past ... unless it’s Patton or MacArthur, of course. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

• On Feb. 22, 1732, George Washington is born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, the second son of a plantation owner. Initially a loyal British subject, Washington eventually led the Continental Army in the American Revolution and became known as the father of the United States. • On Feb. 27, 1827, a group of masked and costumed students dance through the streets of New Orleans, marking the beginning of the city’s Mardi Gras celebrations. Though early French settlers had brought the tradition of Mardi Gras, Spanish governors later banned the celebrations. • On Feb. 25, 1870, Hiram Rhoades Revels, a Republican from Natchez, Mississippi, is sworn into the U.S. Senate, becoming the first black American ever to sit in Congress. During the Civil War, Revels, a college-educated minister, served as a chaplain for the Union army. • On Feb. 26, 1935, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler signs a secret decree authorizing the founding of the Reich Luftwaffe as a third German military service. The Versailles Treaty that ended World War I had prohibited military aviation in Germany. • On Feb. 23, 1958, five-time Formula One champion Juan Manuel Fangio of Argentina is kidnapped in Cuba by a group of Fidel Castro’s rebels. Fangio was released the next day after the Cuba Grand Prix ended. • On Feb. 28, 1964, Thelonious Monk makes the cover of Time magazine. Beatlemania was at its peak, but contemporary jazz music had captured the imagination of a significant number of American music fans.

Valentine’s Day hearts come in all shapes and sizes in this fun kitchen craft using simple ingredients: unflavored gelatin, food coloring and water. In fact, any shape can have its moment in the sun when the plain gelatin stain-glass-like artistic renderings harden into translucent pieces resembling some of the twists and turns of world-famous artist Chihuly’s sculptural glass works. It’s an activity the whole family can enjoy
PIZZA FONDUE Maybe it’s time we all get out our fondue pots again! •8 ounces extra-lean ground sirloin beef or turkey breast •1/2 cup chopped onion •1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning •1/4 teaspoon ground sage •1/4 teaspoon garlic powder •1 teaspoon Italian seasoning •1 (14.5-ounce) can Hunt’s Tomatoes Diced in Sauce •1 (8-ounce) can Hunt’s Tomato Sauce •2 teaspoons Splenda
together to make unique household decorations or embellishments for clothing and shoes. Here’s how to turn unflavored gelatin and water into wacky hardas-plastic heart shapes: 1. To make the concoction, an adult should stir together 9 tablespoons of water and several drops
of food coloring in a saucepan over low heat. Add three envelopes of unflavored gelatin such as Knox, stirring for about 30 seconds or until dissolved. 2. Pour the mixture into a large plastic lid with a rim and a thickness of at least 1/4 inch (a 24-ounce coffee can plastic cover or a lid from a large plastic deli container works well.) Spread air bubbles to the edge with a spoon. Let set on the kitchen counter for no longer than 45 minutes. 3. Remove the flexible gelatin disk from the lid. The disk will be pliable enough to make cutouts with heart-shape cookie cutters. Be sure to keep any odd gelatin scraps
left from the cutouts to make free-form designs. For a mobile hanger, leave the entire outer round rim intact. 4. Use a straw to poke holes into shapes for stringing. Dry the shapes for three to four days on a cooling rack until completely hard. 5. Fasten strings, fishing line or embroidery thread to hearts and tie to open spaces or the rim of the leftover round disk for a fanciful mobile. 6. If you make a variety of shapes, glue the gems on the front of a barrette clasp. Tie them on your gym shoes or through a ribbon on a gift for extra panache. Store leftover pieces in a shoebox to use for future projects. Tip: As the pieces dry
they tend to curl, which makes them unique. However, if you want them to remain fairly flat, dry them between two kitchen HandiWipes, held taut in an embroidery hoop. Note: This concoction is not edible. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series

I enjoy studying and reading about natural health remedies from around the world. My new favorite health and cooking spice is turmeric. Turmeric is a goldencolored culinary spice that often is used in curry dishes. It gives mustard that bright yellow shade and has been commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine for its health properties. Research shows turmeric may be effective for improving an upset stomach and for reducing osteoarthritis pain. In some studies, its effectiveness compared favorably with that reported for pharmaceuticals, according to a National Institutes of Health report. Other early evidence suggests benefits for Alzheimer’s disease, colorectal cancer, gum
disease, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and other diseases. However, the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database reports that it is too soon to rate the effectiveness of turmeric for these conditions. “Turmeric’s benefits are attributed to its antiinflammatory and antioxidant action,” said Dr. Pam Duitsman, nutrition and health education specialist. Curcumin, a constituent of turmeric, also is believed to have antiinflammatory, anticancer and antioxidant properties, according to early findings from animal and lab studies. “The best news is that turmeric is a spice that offers dishes a delicious subtle earthy flavor, and can accomplish its health-promoting work with virtually no adverse
side effects,” said Duitsman. “It is easy to reap the health benefits of turmeric by cooking with it, rather than taking it as a supplement.” She recommends experimenting with turmeric by adding a pinch to recipes like vinaigrettes, pizza dough, rice dishes, eggs and egg salad, sauteed vegetables, lentils, soups, smoothies, etc. This Curry Spice Blend recipe has large amounts of turmeric. Use it in my Easy Chicken Curry and improve your health while enjoying a delicious dish! CURRY SPICE BLEND •2 tablespoons turmeric •2 tablespoons ground coriander •1 tablespoon ground cumin •2 teaspoons ground cardamom •2 teaspoons ground ginger •2 teaspoons black pepper •1 teaspoon powdered cloves •1 teaspoon cinnamon •1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Combine the ingredients in a jar. Cover tightly and shake. Keep in a cool, dark, dry place. Makes 1/2 cup. EASY CHICKEN CURRY •1-1/4 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into 1/4-inch strips •1-1/8 teaspoons salt •1 teaspoon ground black pepper •2-1/2 teaspoons curry powder or spice blend, divided •3/4 cup plain lowfat (2 percent) or whole Greek yogurt (do not use nonfat), divided •4 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided •1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped •4 garlic cloves, minced •1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger •2 cups low sodium chicken broth •1 tablespoon cornstarch •2 teaspoons sugar or stevia •1 cup frozen peas (no need to thaw) •1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro or basil •3 sprigs green onions,
roots removed and discarded, white and green tops chopped Sprinkle the chicken evenly with the salt, pepper, 1-1/2 teaspoons curry powder and 1/4 cup of the yogurt. Mix the chicken with the spices and yogurt until well-coated. Heat 2-1/2 tablespoons of oil in a 12-inch skillet over high heat until just smoking. Add the chicken in a single layer and cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned but still pink in spots, about 3 minutes. Transfer the partially cooked chicken to a clean bowl and set aside. Add the remaining 1-1/2 tablespoon of the oil to the skillet and set heat to medium. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic, ginger and remaining 1-1/2 teaspoons curry powder and cook until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Using a small bowl, whisk the chicken broth and cornstarch together to dissolve the cornstarch. Add it to the skillet along with the sugar
Healthy twist on a classic dessert (NC) — There is no better time than now to start taking care of yourself and re-establishing healthy eating habits. The first way to do this is to put down the take-out menu and step in to the kitchen. A recent survey from Leger and Activia showed that Canadians aren’t afraid to stir the pot: An impressive nine in 10 Canadian women say that cooking their own meals at home on a daily basis is their preferred way to eat a healthy and balanced diet. Every grocery list should cover all of the essential food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy. Studies show that most of us don’t get Canada Food Guide’s daily recommended two to three servings a day. Yogurt is a recognized source of protein that can be incorporated into a recipe for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even dessert. The Activia Challenge is a delicious, simple way to incorporate dairy into your routine – and provide a daily dose of probiotics. Preparing healthy recipes right at home often means no compromise on taste. Mairlyn Smith, professional home economist and cookbook author, recommends an easy way to transform Activia yogurt into a delicious trifle with this simple recipe: RASPBERRY TRIFLE Serves 4 Ingredients: • 4 lady finger cookies • 1 cup (250 mL) frozen local raspberries, thawed
• 4 - 100 g 0% fat Greek Activia Vanilla yogurt You’ll need four 1 cup/250 mL glass desert bowls or parfait dishes Directions: Mash the thawed raspberries with a fork, set aside. Break the lady finger in half and place in the bottom of each of the four bowls. Spoon 1/4 cup (60 mL) of the mashed raspberries over top. Open 1-100 g container of the Activia yogurt and spoon over top of the raspberries. Repeat with all four of the desserts. Place in the fridge. To soften the lady finger the dessert needs to set for at least 4 hours or overnight. Each serving includes 127 Calories, 0.5 g Total Fat, 0 g Saturated Fat, 0 Trans Fat, 9.1 g Protein

or stevia and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Add the peas and return the partially cooked chicken to the skillet. Reduce heat to low and simmer until chicken is cooked through, about 3-5 minutes. Remove pan from the heat, and stir in 1/4 cup of the remaining yogurt. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Sprinkle with cilantro or basil, if desired. Garnish with green onions. The best (and worst) foods for heart health A26
February 19, 2016 | This Week Marketplace
No one wants to hear from their doctors that they have joined the millions of people across the globe to be diagnosed with heart disease. The Heart Foundation reports that heart disease, which includes diseases of the heart and cardiovascular system and stroke, is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, affecting both men and women and most racial/ethnic groups. Heart disease also is one of the leading causes of death in Canada, claiming more than 33,000 lives per year. Many factors contribute to the development of heart disease, including smoking, lack of exercise and stress. Diet and whether a person is overweight or obese also can have a direct link to heart health. Diet, particularly for those with diabetes and poorly controlled blood sugar levels, is a major concern. A variety of foods are considered helpful for maintaining a strong and healthy heart and cardiovascular system, while others can contribute to conditions that may eventually lead to cardiovascular disease or cardiac arrest. Moderation enables a person to sample
a little of everything, but not to make any one food a habit. The following are some foods to promote heart health and some foods you might want to avoid. Poor • Fried foods: Many fried foods have little nutritional value, as they tend to be high in saturated and trans fats. French fries are particularly bad because they are carbohydrates fried and then doused in salt. • Sausage: Processed meats have frequently earned a bad reputation among cardiologists, but sausage can be a big offender, due in large part to its high saturated fat content. • Red meats: Enjoying a steak is probably not as bad as eating a deepfried brownie, but it’s best to limit red meat consumption to about 10 percent or less of your diet. Red meats can have a considerable amount of cholesterol, saturated fat and calories. • Added sugars: Sugar can increase blood pressure and triglyceride levels. Sugar often hides out in foods that you would not associate with the sweetener. Plus, many people unwittingly consume
fish, such as halibut, herring and salmon, contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are heart-healthy. Omega-3s also can be found in walnuts, flaxseed and some soy products. • Beans: Beans and other legumes are an excellent source of protein and can be a stand-in for meats that are high in saturated fat. Beans also contain cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber and folate, which can reduce blood homocystein levels. The Bean Institute reports that consuming beans may reduce cholesterol levels by roughly six to 10 percent. • Yogurt: Researchers in Japan found yogurt may protect against gum disease. Left untreated, gum disease may elevate a person’s risk for heart disease. Yogurt contains good bacteria that can counteract bad bacteria and boost immunity. • Raisins: Raisins contain antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation. Inflammation is often linked to heart disease and other debilitating conditions. Fresh produce also is a good source of antioxidants.
too much sugar simply through sugarsweetened beverages and ready-to-eat cereals. • Salty foods: Leave the salt shaker in the spice cabinet and opt for herbs for flavoring, advises the American Heart Association. High-sodium diets often are to blame for hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease. • Dairy: Artery-clogging saturated fat also can be found in dairy products, particularly the full-fat versions. Butter, sour cream and milk can be problematic when people overindulge. Opt for low-fat dairy when possible. Good • Tree nuts: Tree nuts contain unsaturated fats that can help lower LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff) and improve HDL (the good stuff). Nuts also are a filling source of protein and other healthy nutrients. • Whole grains: Whole grains contain complex carbohydrates for energy, as well as protein and fiber. Fiber can help scrub cholesterol from the blood, lowering bad cholesterol levels. • Fatty fish: Many cold-water, fatty
Surprising health benefits of caffeine That new coffee bar opened up just around the corner and you have been eager to sample one of their signature blends. But you consistently resist the urge to venture inside. Caffeine is not so healthy for you, right? Caffeine, the most widely consumed stimulant on the planet, has garnered a bad reputation. Some people fear caffeine and it’s potentially jittery and addictive side effects. However, many medical professionals attest that, when consumed in moderation, caffeine actually can have a number of health benefits. Before you skip that morning cup of Joe or choose an herbal blend instead of black tea, consider the following health benefits of caffeine. • Caffeine boosts brain and central nervous system function. Caffeine mimics the shape of another compound in the body called adenosine, which helps the body
calm down and become sleepy. Caffeine can fit in adenosine receptors and cause a jolt of energy rather than sleepiness. Harvard researchers have found that blocking adenosine may slow the buildup of a toxic brain plaque that is associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, caffeine may help keep dopamine molecules active in the brain and prevent the onset of Parkinson’s disease. • Caffeine can help improve mood. The stimulant effect of caffeine may help boost people’s moods, and thus reduce the propensity for suicidal thoughts. In 2013, Harvard’s School of Public Health found that respondents who drank two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day cut their suicide risk by 45 percent. • Caffeine may lower risk of stroke. Studies conducted in both the United States and Sweden found
that older women who drink more than a cup of caffeinated coffee each day have between a 20 and 25 percent lower risk of stroke. Similar findings were discovered in older men. • Caffeine boosts memory. Studies from Johns Hopkins University showed that a 200mg caffeine pill helped boost memory consolidation. • Caffeine offers pain relief. Caffeine is often paired with other pain relievers to bring about faster relief. The Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that when caffeine was combined with other pain relievers, patients required 40 percent less of the other drug to bring the same amount of relief experienced when using just the non-caffeine drug alone. Caffeine on its own can also relieve pain. Consuming caffeine before or after a workout can help reduce muscle soreness. • Caffeine may help to
prevent cancer. A recent study from Rutgers University pointed out that caffeine prevented skin cancer in hairless mice. • Caffeine could open up air passages. People with asthma may find caffeine can improve their breathing. A study published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine determined that caffeine seems to open airways and help asthmatics breathe eas-
ier, providing a similar benefit to theophylline, a current asthma medication. Although caffeine can prove beneficial in various ways, individuals should realize that it remains a potent and potentially addictive stimulant. Caffeine also can aggravate anxiety symptoms and interact with certain medications. People concerned about caffeine should discuss their caffeine consump-
tion with their physicians. BAKER’S DOZEN GLUTEN FREE BREAD CLUB *PURCHASE TWELVE LOAVES OF GLUTEN FREE BREAD AND RECEIVE YOUR THIRTEENTH FREE* (Cannot be combined with any other offer)
