These new ways of “doing things” to save time or money or other has now been given a modern term called “LIFE HACKS”. The term hacking is used in computer hacking to signify using shortcuts to gain access to locked data stored in hard drives. In many cases where people

One that was shared with me involved potatoes. Peeling them is sometimes a chore that cannot be delegated to another family without significant IOU’s involved. So next time you want potatoes but want to skip the hard part attach a new, round and clean toilet bowl brush to the end of a drill, place the spuds in a bucket of water and

activate the drill at high speed. You may need to fill the bucket with more water but I assure you, the skins will be gone very quickly. Come check out the video on our Facebook page, and I will post one of my favorite links of many other life hacks. Another is using small pop bottles, cut the bottom open and bury top down beside plants. The bottle will act as a funnel putting water right where it needs to be at the roots and takes way less time to water and administer nutrients directly. So many prob-

Acute care clients receive gifts Acute care clients in the Sunrise Health Region received a special gift this Christmas. Sunrise Health Region volunteers and staff, on behalf of Breast Friends, delivered Breast Wishes for Christmas cookbooks to clients in hospitals in Yorkton, Canora, Kamsack, Preeceville, Melville and Esterhazy. Cookbooks are also being gifted to clients receiving treatment in the Yorkton Regional Health Centre Chemotherapy Department between Christmas and January 15, 2016. Breast Friends is a group of ten women from Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, that has donated 1.8 million dollars from the sale of their cookbook series to cancer causes over the last ten years. Most of their funds are directed toward system gaps or unmet patient needs, especially for patients in rural areas. Their cookbook series has raised not only funds but also awareness for both breast cancer and prostate cancer with their fifth, award-winning cookbook, Breast

RN, Kristen Wikman delivered cookbooks to inpatients at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Esterhazy. Wishes, for the Men in our Lives. “This is our region and we wanted to give back to our community for their support of our project and our cookbooks,” said Patti Hack, member of Breast Friends. “The volunteers graciously

offered to deliver the books to everyone that was staying in the hospital on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.” “This was a very thoughtful gift”, said Suzette Szumutku,

Director of Volunteer Services for Sunrise Health Region. “I think it lifted the spirits not only of the patients who were in hospital during the holidays, but also of the volunteers and staff

members who did the delivery.” Cookbooks are also available for purchase in the gift shop at the

DEAR DR. ROACH: How much good does it do for the body to just lie there with your eyes closed all night long when you can’t sleep? — D.R. ANSWER: It doesn’t do much good at all; in fact, it causes harm, in that it makes it more likely for you to associate

the bed as a place to stay awake. My advice is, if you are lying in bed and not sleeping, get up out of bed and do something. Listen to soft music. Read a book, as long as the light isn’t too bright. Write in your diary. When you feel like sleeping, get back into bed, but don’t stay there if you aren’t getting to sleep in 15 minutes or so and know that you aren’t going to. Getting a little highintensity exercise during the day, avoiding caffeine after midday and staying away from naps are good ways to feel ready for sleep at bedtime.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: I remember you said that “Secrets and Lies” would be back for another season. Can you tell me anything about it? — Janet T., via email A: The detective whodunit drama starring Juliette Lewis will return to ABC this spring for a 10-episode second season. Although an exact airdate had not been released as of this writing, I’ll be looking for it around late-February/ early March. This season focuses on Eric Warner (played by Michael Ealy), who is the heir apparent to his family’s privateequity firm in Charlotte, North Carolina. Newly married, Eric is attending a party to honor his dad passing over the reins to him when his wife, Kate Warner (Jordana Brewster), is found dead, and life, as he knows it, is over. Overseeing the case is Det. Andrea Cornell (Juliette Lewis). She immediately puts the grieving husband in her crosshairs, but as always, secrets seep out about this seemingly perfect family, which turns their world upside down. Also starring are Terry O’Quinn (“Lost,” “Hawaii Five-O”), Mekia Cox (“Crazy Stupid Love”), Charlie Barnett (“Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.”) and Kenny Johnson (“The Shield,” “Sons of Anarchy”). Q: Can you tell me what Alexander Skarsgard has coming up? — Lilly T., Austin, Texas A: On July 1, you can

Juliette Lewis see Alexander on the big screen in “The Legend of Tarzan,” a retelling of the Edgar Rice Burroughs character we all know and love. The movie is directed by David Yates, who directed the final four “Harry Potter” movies, so audiences can expect wonderful special effects alongside excellent drama and storytelling. This version of the iconic tale begins 10 years after Lord Greystoke, John Clayton III, leaves the jungle. He’s living in 1880s Victorian London, and of course, he is married to Jane (Margo Robbie). Clayton is invited back to the Congo as a special emissary, and he and Jane soon find themselves in dangerous waters, with Clayton having to revisit his jungle and vine-swinging skills to get them out of the Congo alive. David Yates told “USA Today” that Sweden-born Alexander was perfect for the role of the modernday Tarzan because “he has this wonderful quality of not quite belong-

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had my thyroid removed for a goiter 35 years ago. My doctor put me on 100 mcg of thyroid medication; however, when I took it, I got sick. My hands shook, and my heart beat very quickly (over 100). So one doctor told me to split it, and take 50 in the morning and 50 in the afternoon. I felt better, and I took it twice a day for 30 years. After menopause, a different doctor changed it to 88 mcg and said to take it one time a day. This what I have been taking for five years, but I was feeling better and

happier when I split the dose. My question is, can I split this medication? Does it make any different for the body if the TSH is normal? Does it make any difference what time of the day I take it? — H.T. ANSWER: Many people do split the dose of thyroid hormone, especially if they are taking a type of thyroid, such as Armour, that contains T3. If 88 mcg is the dose that has the right amount of TSH (a hormone made by the pituitary that helps determine whether the dose is correct as far as your body is concerned)

ing to one [country] or the other. ... Tarzan needs muscles, but it’s more a leaner, longer, more vertical modern man than the square-jawed stereotype we’re used to.” At a lean 6-foot-4, Alexander definitely fits the bill. Q: There’s been a lot of talk about a new Peewee movie, but I haven’t heard anything else about it. When will it be released? — Paul T., via email A: “Pee-wee’s Big Holiday” premieres on Netflix in March, and it also stars Tara Buck and Joe Manganiello. So far the plot has been pretty hush-hush, but you can count on adventure, intelligent humor hidden behind silly antics and a sense of deja vu that’ll happily take you back to your childhood. for you, then the TSH shouldn’t be affected by taking half the dose in the morning and half at night. Most people don’t find that it matters, but if it relieves your symptoms to take it twice a day, that’s OK. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a home health nurse. Many of my patients think that because something has been cooked and then refrigerated, it will stay good indefinitely! How long should you realistically keep food that is refrigerated? Thank you. — S.C. ANSWER: Of course, the answer depends on

If you’re determined to eat healthier this year, but you’re feeling a little baffled about what to cook, I’ve got the remedy. I’ve fallen in love with several new cookbooks that will introduce you to new cuisines and ingenious cooking methods to make life easier and healthier in 2016! When exploring your cookbook, save time and money by selecting recipes that use similar ingredients. You’ll be able to stick with a healthy eating plan if you map out recipes to prepare for one or two weeks at a time, and stock up on the ingredients. Here are two of my favorite cookbooks: “The Perfect Egg: A

tips and techniques for baking, boiling, coddling, frying, poaching, scrambling, steaming, preserving and pickling eggs. I chose to share the recipe for famous Greek Avgolemono Soup, which is simple to make and could be a lunch or dinner dish.

Fresh Take on Recipes for Morning, Noon and Night” by Teri Lynn Fisher and Jenny Park. Eggs are the perfect protein if you’re trying to eat healthy on a budget. The authors have compiled a fresh take on classic recipes and comfort foods that are “eggcellent” choices for any meal. “The Perfect Egg” recipes are a far cry from using hard-boiled eggs as diet food. The book explores every aspect of eggs in the chapter Egg Basics 101. The authors also provide in-depth insight on the history of egg cultivation and consumption, crack open the story about egg anatomy and types, and unscramble the mystery of the grading system. There also are several

AVGOLEMONO SOUP •4 cups chicken stock •1/4 cup whole wheatorzo pasta •1 egg •2 egg yolks •Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon, plus more for garnish •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Bring the stock to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add orzo and cook 6 to 8 minutes or until tender but not mushy. Meanwhile, whisk together the egg and yolks, 1 teaspoon of the lemon zest and juice, the salt and the pepper in a bowl until foamy and pale yellow. While stirring con-

stantly, carefully pour 1/2 cup of the hot stock into the egg mixture to temper the eggs and keep them from curdling. Lower heat to mediumlow. While stirring constantly, pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan containing the orzo. Simmer, stirring frequently, for 8-10 minutes or until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Taste, adjust seasoning and serve in warm bowls sprinkled with lemon zest, if desired. Serves 2 to 3. “Genius Recipes: 100 Recipes That Will Change the Way You Cook” by Kristen Milgore, executive editor at Food52. com. The title says it all! “Genius Recipes” contains unique recipes from cookbook authors, chefs and bloggers. I suggest reading it first with a stack of bookmarks. The simple tricks, shortcuts and inventive new ways to prepare familiar recipes will completely transform the way you

cook. I love this cookbook so much that it was difficult to choose just one recipe. This is my variation of the one for Chicken Thighs with Lemon. The book’s cooking method crisps the skin, and the lemon and garlic creates a simple sauce using the rendered chicken fat that is absolutely delicious! CHICKEN THIGHS WITH LEMON •1-1/2 tablespoons olive oil •8 (bone-in, skin-on) chicken thighs •1 tablespoon poultry seasoning •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper •1-1/2 teaspoons fresh lemon zest •1 garlic clove, finely minced •Lemon wedges for serving Rinse thighs and pat dry with paper towels. Season with the poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Place olive oil in a

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects call for care in preparing material for submission. Although you might find it bothersome to go over what you’ve done, the fact is, rechecking could be worth your time and effort. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The week is favorable for Bovines who welcome change. New career opportunities wait to be checked out. You also might want to get started on that home makeover you’ve been considering. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might have to be extra careful to protect that surprise you have planned, thanks to a certain snoopy someone who wants to know more about your plans than you’re willing to share. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Family ties are strong this week, although an old and still-unresolved problem might create some

unpleasant moments. If so, look to straighten the situation out once and for all. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although the Lion might see it as an act of loyalty and courage to hold on to an increasingly shaky position, it might be wiser to make changes now to prevent a possible meltdown later. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your gift for adding new people to your circle of friends works overtime this week, thanks largely to contacts you made during the holidays. A surprise awaits you at the week’s end. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t hide your talents. It’s a good time to show what you can do to impress people who can do a lot for you. A dispute with a family member might still need some smoothing over. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be open with your colleagues

about your plan to bring a workplace matter out into the open. You’ll want their support, and they’ll want to know how you’ll pull it off. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Trying to patch up an unraveling relationship is often easier said than done. But it helps to dis-

cuss and work out any problems that arise along the way. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) While your creative aspect remains high this week, you might want to call on your practical side to help work out the why and wherefore of an upcoming decision.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Dealing with someone’s disappointment can be difficult for Aquarians, who always try to avoid giving pain. But a full explanation and a show of sympathy can work wonders. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting a jobrelated matter past some

major obstacles should be easier this week. A personal situation might take a surprising but not necessarily unwelcome turn by the week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be both a dreamer and a doer. You consider helping others to be an important part of your life.

A tasty and traditional take on chicken A12

January 15, 2016 | This Week Marketplace

Chicken can be served in various ways, and that versatility no doubt contributes to the popularity of poultry. Some people love their chicken fried, while others can’t get enough grilled chicken. Baking chicken may not be as popular as frying or grilling it, but baked chicken is no less delicious. For chicken lovers used to frying or grilling their favorite meals, the following recipe for “Home-Style Baked Chicken” from Laurie McNamara’s “Simply Scratch: 120 Wholesome Homemade Recipes Made Easy” (Avery) may just make you a baked chicken devotee. HOME-STYLE BAKED CHICKEN Serves 4 to 6 •2 tablespoons olive oil

•2 tablespoons unsalted butter •1-1⁄2 teaspoons Poultry Seasoning (see below) •1 teaspoon salt •1⁄4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper •1 cup unbleached allpurpose flour •1⁄2 teaspoon paprika •4 to 5 pounds skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs and drumsticks Preheat the oven and a 9-by-13-inch metal roasting pan to 375 F. Place the olive oil and butter in the pan and place the pan in the oven on the lower rack. In a small bowl, combine the poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Set aside. Place the flour in a resealable bag. Place a few pieces of the chicken in the flour at

a time, seal, and shake to coat. Remove and vigorously shake off any excess flour. Place the flour dusted chicken on a clean platter. Repeat with the remaining chicken pieces. Remove the roasting

pan from the oven and immediately arrange the chicken skin-side up in a single layer over the bottom of the pan and then sprinkle with some of the poultry seasoning blend and paprika. It should sizzle.

Warm up with wild rice soup Soup is an ideal meal on cold winter days. One of the best things about soup is its versatility. Soup makes a great entrée, and it also can serve as a warming appetizer or a delicious side dish. Soup also knows no bounds with regard to ingredients, making it a meal that can be enjoyed several times per week without boring the taste buds. Those who need to warm up this winter may want to try the following recipe for “Minnesota Wild Rice Soup” courtesy of The Culinary Institute of America’s “Book of Soups” (Lebhar-Friedman). MINNESOTA WILD RICE SOUP Makes 8 servings •2 tablespoons unsalted butter •3 carrots, finely diced •2 leeks, white and light green parts, finely diced •2 celery stalks, finely diced •1⁄4 cup all-purpose flour •2 quarts Chicken Broth (see below) •3⁄4 cup wild rice •1⁄2 teaspoon salt, or to taste •3⁄4 cup heavy cream, hot •3 tablespoons dry sherry •1⁄4 cup minced chives •3 tablespoons chopped parsley Heat the butter in a soup pot over medium heat. Add the carrots, leeks and celery. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to low, add the flour, and stir well. Cook gently, about 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the broth gradually, whisk-

Place the chicken and water in a large pot (the water should cover the chicken by at least 2 inches; add more if necessary). Bring the water slowly to a boil over medium heat. As the water comes to a boil, skim any foam that rises to the surface. Adjust the heat once a boil is reached so that a slow, lazy simmer is established. Cover partially, and simmer 2 hours, skimming as often as necessary.

ing well with each addition to eliminate flour lumps. Bring to a simmer. Add the wild rice and salt. Continue to simmer until the rice is tender but still somewhat chewy, about 45 minutes. Stir in the heated cream and sherry. Season with salt. Serve in heated bowls, garnished with chives and parsley. CHICKEN BROTH Makes about 2 quarts •4 pounds stewing hen or chicken parts or meaty bones, such as backs and necks •3 quarts cold water •1 large onion, diced •1 carrot, diced (about 1⁄3 cup) •1 celery stalk, diced (about 1⁄2 cup) •5 to 6 whole black peppercorns •3 to 4 parsley stems •1 bay leaf •1 sprig fresh thyme •1-1⁄2 teaspoons salt, or to taste

Add the remaining ingredients. Continue to simmer, skimming the surface as necessary, until the broth is fully flavored, about 1 hour. If using hen or chicken parts, remove them and cool slightly. Dice or shred the meat, and reserve to garnish the broth or save for another use. Discard the skin and bones. Strain the broth through a fine sieve or cheesecloth-lined colander into a large metal container. Discard the solids. If you are using the broth right away, skim off any fat on the surface. If you are not using the broth right away, cool it quickly by transferring it to a metal container (if it’s not in one already) and placing the container in a sink filled with ice cold water. Stir the broth as it cools, and then transfer it to storage containers. Store in the refrigerator, up to 5 days, or in the freezer, up to 3 months. Label and date the containers clearly before putting them into the freezer.

Place the hot pan back on the lower rack of the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Remove, baste by spooning the juices that have collected in the pan over each piece, and then sprinkle the chicken with the remaining poultry seasoning blend. Return the pan to the oven and bake for 20 minutes more. Remove and baste one last time before moving the chicken to the middle rack and baking for 10 to 15 minutes more to further crisp the chicken skin. Let rest for 5 to 8 minutes before serving.

In a spice grinder or using a mortar and pestle, combine 2 teaspoons of the thyme, the marjoram and the rosemary. Blend until finely ground. Transfer to an airtight container and add the remaining 1 teaspoon thyme, the nutmeg, the paprika, and the sage. Store in a dry, dark place for up to 6 months.

POULTRY SEASONING Makes 3 tablespoons •3 teaspoons dried thyme •1-1⁄2 teaspoons dried marjoram •1 teaspoon dried rosemary •1⁄2 teaspoon freshly

HOLLYWOOD — Ronni Reed (Peggy Biggs, Mike’s mother) of “Mike and Molly let the cat out of the bag when she announced on her Facebook page that the sixth season of the popular CBS show will be its last. She posted, “We are done taping January 27, a shortened season (13 episodes) after the announced renewal of 22 episodes back in March by the network. The

popular show, running in syndication on many stations, is being dumped by CBS in an attempt to lure a younger audience. Once again, a network is pandering to younger viewers while ignoring older viewers who still watch television. According to many current surveys, a large number of young viewers don’t watch conventional television; they prefer to binge watch and select

viewing pleasures on their electronic devices. CBS, you just may be spitting in the wind and alienating your older, core audience. The 1996 hit movie “The First Wives Club,

which starred Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton, is headed for Broadway as a musical. The original film cost $30 million and grossed $181.5 million. A new adaption opened in Chicago last March with a book by Linda Bloodworth-Thomason (of the CBS series “Designing Women). But you can see the chemistry between Hawn, Midler and Keaton again when Netflix produces a feature film with them about three actresses whose singing group reconnects 30 years after their volatile split. “Xena: Warrior Princess will make

• On Jan. 19, 1809, author Edgar Allan Poe is born in Boston. By the time he was 3 years old, Poe’s parents had died, leaving him in the care of his godfather, John Allan. Allan eventually

disowned Poe for gambling debts. • On Jan. 22, 1879, U.S soldiers badly bloody Cheyenne Chief Dull Knife and his people as they make a desperate march to flee the Indian Territory where they had been relocated and return to their Wyoming homeland. • On Jan. 18, 1912,

after a two-month ordeal, the expedition of British explorer Robert Falcon Scott arrives at the South Pole only to find that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had preceded them by just over a month. • On Jan. 21, 1959, Carl Dean Switzer, the actor who as a child played “Alfalfa,â€? the freckle-

faced boy with a cowlick, in the “Our Gangâ€? comedy film series, dies at age 31 in a fight in California. • On Jan. 23, 1968, the U.S. intelligence-gathering ship Pueblo is seized by the North Korean navy and its crew charged with spying. Negotiations to free the 83-man crew dragged on for nearly a year, and required a

a comeback at NBC. Original producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, also responsible for the original series, are on board to reimagine the Warrior Princess with a new actress in a modern setting. Tapert doesn’t have to look far to find the original Xena, Lucy Lawless, because he married her and featured her in the recent “Evil Dead series spin-off, “Ash vs. Evil Dead. Chris Pine has completed three films: the disaster drama “The Finest Hours, with Casey Affleck, Eric Bana and Ben Foster, opening Jan. 29; “Star Trek Beyond, the 13th film

in the movie series and the third installment in his reboot, due in July; and the heist film “Comancheria, with Jeff Bridges and Ben Foster, no release date yet. Pine is now filming “Wonder Woman (with Gal Gadot in the title role) as Steve Trevor (the role originated by Lyle Waggoner in the TV series with Lynda Carter). It also stars Robin Wright and Danny Huston, and arrives July 2017. At 35, Pine hasn’t been linked to anyone romantically; maybe he should consider his next film a remake of the 1939 Fred MacMurray/Sylvia Sidney film, “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine.

signed confession by the ship’s captain admitting to spying. • On Jan. 24, 1972, after 28 years of hiding in the jungles of Guam, farmers discover Shoichi Yokoi, a Japanese sergeant who was unaware that World War II had ended. Yokoi had gone into hiding rather than surrender to the Americans.

• On Jan. 20, 1981, minutes after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration as the 40th president of the United States, the 52 U.S. captives held at the U.S. embassy in Teheran, Iran, are released, ending the 444-day Iran Hostage Crisis. President Jimmy Carter had been unable to diplomatically resolve the crisis.

• It was 20th-century American historian, sociologist, philosopher and literary critic Lewis Mumford who made the following sage observation: “A man of courage never needs weapons, but he may need bail.â€? • In the 1960s, American spies in the Soviet Union had a novel way to eavesdrop on conversations: They used cats. The CIA agents placed listening devices on the felines in order to hear conversations that might take place on a park bench or near an open window. • Polar bears and

grizzly bears are similar enough genetically to successfully mate. Any offspring produced from such a union is known as a “pizzly.â€? • If you’re a book lover who is fortunate enough to be planning a trip to Japan’s capital sometime soon, then Book and Bed Tokyo needs to be on your agenda. For a mere $30-$40 per night, you can sleep in a bunk surrounded by bookshelves and have access to free Wi-Fi and a vending machine. The bathrooms and a large seating area (furnished, reportedly, with deep, comfy couches)

Managing your digestive problems According to a new national survey conducted by Bio-K+, 71 per cent of Canadians have experienced gastrointestinal problems in the past year. While just over three quarters believe that our intestinal flora helps improve digestion, only 35 per cent of Canadians take action (such as taking probiotics) to prevent and correct the problem. Unknown to most of us, we have a network of neurons lining our gut that is so extensive that scientists have nicknamed it our “second brain. What is even more remarkable is that the bacteria living in our gut are constantly in communication with our nervous and immune systems. When the intestinal flora, the intestine’s naturally-occurring bacteria, is unbalanced, the so-called “bad bacteria take over, potentially leading to illness, infection, digestive issues, fatigue or depression. Every day, our intestinal

flora is disrupted by our diet, stress, medications (especially antibiotics) and lifestyle. Probiotics are the good bacteria that are beneficial to our bodies, specifically for the digestive and immune systems. Research has shown that certain probiotics have a significant positive impact on various areas of your health including inflammatory diseases, allergies and skin conditions. By interacting with the intestinal flora, probiotics help support and strengthen the immune system and intestinal lining − thus training, strengthening and protecting your second brain. Available in a pill or drinkable format, Bio-K+ is one example of a probiotic that is clinically proven, doctorrecommended and approved by Health Canada. It can help you take as good of care of your second brain as you would any other part of your body.

She’s had sex with her mother’s boyfriend (Alexander Skarsgard), and she’s eager to see how the world can open up for her as she navigates this new side of herself. Her mother (Kristen Wiig) isn’t much of a beacon, gratefully indulging in the sex and drug offerings of 1970s San Francisco. Minnie dreams of being a comic artist, and records her colorful perspective in ways that take over the screen. This is a rare movie that walks a tricky path. Minnie’s story isn’t easy to tell. Get the facts on shingles A18

January 15, 2016 | This Week Marketplace

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection of the nerves that is painful and can have severe complications. People who suffer from it have described their pain in many ways, such as burns, throbs, shoots and stabs. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, shingles is a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus - the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you have chickenpox, the virus remains

dormant in your body in nerve cells and as you get older it can reappear as shingles. Although it is most common in people over age 50, anyone who has had chickenpox is at risk. Shingles is a painful, blistering rash that can last several weeks. Although it usually occurs in one part of the body, such as the torso, shingles can also affect the face and eyes. For Cathy Dillon of Toronto, 61, the first occurrence of shingles was discovered by her

hair stylist when a cluster of red dots on her scalp became apparent during a trip to the salon. Her rash gradually spread along the side of her head and face dangerously close to her eye. “I had to go to a specialist to make sure the shingles weren’t going into my eye,” she explained as cases of shingles affecting the eyes may lead to a loss of vision. Not only was the rash spreading it was becoming more and more painful. “I had excruciating pain,

it felt like my face was on fire,” described Dillon. It is estimated that nearly 1 in 3 people will experience shingles in their lifetime. For most people, the pain from shingles resolves as the rash heals, but for others it can cause long-lasting nerve pain. This potentially severe nerve pain (called postherpetic neuralgia or PHN) can last for months or years after the rash heals. In several cases, this ongoing nerve pain can cause complications

that may affect normal, daily activities such as walking, sleeping, and socializing. The pain can be debilitating and lead to a loss of independence, anxiety and even depression. Here are some common shingles symptoms: 1. Pain, itching, or tingling in an area on the sides of your body or face. 2. A rash breaks out on the same area a few days later. 3. The painful rash spreads in a single stripe around one side

of the body or one side of the face. The rash then forms blisters that typically scab over in 7 to 10 days and clears up within 2 to 4 weeks. 4. Symptoms can also include, fever, headache, chills and upset stomach. 5. Nerve pain where a breeze or the touch of clothing can cause severe pain. For more information about shingles speak to your doctor or pharmacist. This information is provided by Merck.

Powerful ways to improve heart health Heart disease and stroke are responsible for 27 per cent of deaths in Canada every year. It’s therefore crucial for us to take action to break bad health habits because up to 80 per cent of early heart disease and stroke can be prevented by adopting healthy behaviours including eating a healthy diet and exercising. Here are some heart healthy tips to start implementing now: Improve your diet Healthy eating starts at home, so your kitchen is the perfect place to

make positive changes. Go through your refrigerator and pantry and purge foods that are high in sodium or sugar, and are highly processed – that means it’s time to part with your sugary cereals, sodas and candy. Replace those empty calories with whole grain cereals, fruits, veggies, seeds and nuts to help lower your risk of heart disease. Get moving Regular exercise is crucial for maintaining a healthy heart, but simple changes to your everyday routine like walking a few blocks instead of

driving or opting to take the stairs instead of the elevator can help to burn calories and keep you fit Use heart healthy apps Just as technology is transforming our life at work and at home, it’s also having a positive impact on our health. There are several smartphone apps available that can help you get on the road to better cardiovascular health. The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s <30 Days app offers over 600 personalized health challenges, step counting, trivia and more. “The new version of the <30 Days app digs

Card of Thanks The family of the late Terry Kozowyst would like to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all who helped ease our sorrow at the passing of Peaky. A special thank you to relatives and friends for their many acts of kindness including those who delivered gifts of food, the donations, cards of sympathy, emails and flowers. A special thank you to Wolkowski Funeral Home for their caring and expert services, Pastor Stepko, Donna and Justin Toffan, Rob and Ann MacLellan and the pall bearers for their assistance with the funeral service. Although it is not possible to thank everyone individually we are deeply grateful to you all. - Patty, Darlene, Linda, Bob, Patsy and families.

With the holiday season now behind us we feel it is time to express our sincere and heartfelt thank you. It has taken some time for us to process our feelings, given the sudden and tragic circumstance surrounding Donald’s passing. Unpreparedness seems to have sheltered us in some way, along with the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Now, however, it has become very real. The adrenaline has worn off and feelings flood in along with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and appreciation. We, as a family, have had time to reflect upon the days and weeks since Don’s passing and what we realize most is how lucky we are to have each other. By each other, we of course mean our family, but along with them we are truly in awe of our friends and neighbours far and near. Our wonderful community of Roblin filled with more heart than a city a million strong. From the days surrounding the accident and onwards, you have been there for us; praying, caring and supporting. You were never unnoticed. Be it a visit, a phone call or text, a card or a care package you always seemed to be there with a kind gesture when we needed it most. The out-pouring of love and support was truly amazing we appreciate it and all of you so much! It would take a lot of ink and be a very long read to mention you all by name and inevitably we would forget some. So, we have decided that this note, along with a donation to the Roblin Lions Club and the Health Science Centre SICU in Donald’s memory, will be our thank you to everyone: a thank-you that bridges his journey and is a wonderful way for Donald to be remembered. Now, we look ahead to the New Year and wish you all the very best in 2016. -Our Sincere thanks, Barb Weber, Wayne & Gwen Weber, Grant & Bobbi Jo Weber, Ryan & Arla Mann and families.

Seniors, Parents, Children!

Beating the winter blues As the temperature grows more frigid and snow piles higher, just the thought of leaving the house can seem like an insurmountable feat. When your mood is dropping as fast as the temperature outside, these tips and tricks may help to boost your spirits and make the most of the season. 1. Snack smarter. While the cold winter months might make you crave comfort foods and junky snacks, these options are typically loaded with sugar and refined flours, making you feel even more sluggish. Opt for whole grains and complex carbs like spinach, yams, broccoli, beans, zucchini, and lentils which will fill you up while also providing long-lasting nourishment. 2. Plan a warm weather vacation. Turn your dreams into a reality by planning a trip to warmer weath-

er. “Sometimes all we need is a change of pace and scenery during the winter months to recharge and unwind,” says Pierre-Jean Mayol at Aeroplan, one of Canada’s leading loyalty programs. “Whether you’re longing for breathtaking beaches and sunsets in Sydney, Australia, or a relaxation getaway to the white sandy beaches of Turks and Caicos, Aeroplan’s Fixed Mileage and Market Fare Flight rewards make it easier to travel to over 1,300 destinations in more than 190 countries and start at only 7,500 miles”. 3. Make your environment brighter. Shorter days filled with more darkness can have a serious impact on our physical and mental wellbeing. Opening blinds, trimming trees in your backyard, and sitting closer to windows can help provide you with an extra dose of

sunshine. 4. Get active. The winter usually makes us want to curl up in a blanket and glue ourselves to the couch for hours. Make an effort to break that cycle because exercise can actually help improve your mood and raise the brain’s levels of serotonin and endorphins. 5. Embrace the season. Instead of thinking of ways to avoid the cold and snow, take up a sport like ice skating or hockey. Make the most of the slopes and plan an adventure to the world renowned mountains of Whistler, British Columbia. With access to any seat at any time on all Air Canada flights, Aeroplan’s flight rewards make it easier to start planning your winter adventure right now. Bottle water consumption expected to surpass soft drinks Not all water is created equal. Just ask celebrities like Beyoncé, Miranda Kerr and Mark Wahlberg: Alkaline water is where it’s at, and it’s one of the fastest-growing segments in the premium hydration category. In fact, the bottled water category is expected to surpass carbonated soft drinks as the number one packaged beverage by 2016, and enhanced water sales are helping to drive this shift. According to a recent Mintel consumer report, enhanced water grew a dramatic 62 per cent from 2012 to 2014. There are several enhanced water options available in Canada like Flow, a naturally alkaline water sourced from a local spring in Ontario that features naturally

occurring minerals including calcium bicarbonate, magnesium, potassium and electrolytes. Of all the enhanced waters, Flow is the only one packaged in an ecofriendly Tetra Pak that is made mostly out of paperboard, a renewable material. So is there a benefit to drinking alkaline water if you’re in good health? The answer is ‘yes’. With no industrial process or additives, a holistic H2O like Flow siphoned straight from the earth and packaged in a sustainable paperboard Tetra Pak will offer the healthful properties you need to stay hydrated, without the neutral pH of tap water or the chemicals associated with water

bottled in plastic. Plus, alkaline water is rich in acid-neutralizing compounds, such as calcium, silica and zinc. More than 70 per cent of consumers say they drink enhanced bottled water because it helps them get essential minerals which are missing from their everyday diets. If you’re putting in the time and effort to exercise and eat well, it only makes sense to stay hydrated the healthiest way possible. Now consumers have an even better choice when it comes to water that’s not only loaded with restorative benefits, but one that’s also sustainably packaged in a BPA and PET free carton. More information is available at www.flowlikewater. com.

Creative ways to enjoy family time This Week Marketplace | January 15, 2016

Between busy work schedules and endless extracurricular activities, fitting in quality mealtimes can be challenging for many families. Cooking together is the perfect way to slow the pace. In addition to creating a bonding experience, family cooking also provides the benefit of developing essential life skills for your children. For the Goodman family, life is as busy as ever with Scott (father) and Penny (mother) both having full-time jobs, Jake (son) being an influential actor and Tess (daughter) being a competitive gymnast. Regardless of how hectic life can be, the Goodmans have created a mealtime routine that accommodates the entire family. “When we first started preparing family meals together, our goal was simply to help our children learn how to cook. It has evolved into so much more than that because it gives us the invaluable chance to enjoy each other’s company and connect as a family,” says Scott Goodman. The biggest things that discourage parents from cooking with their children are time constraints. A survey of Ontario parents found that 77 per cent believed that they did not have enough time to share their cooking skills with their children. But research has shown that it doesn’t have to be time consuming. These three tips from the Registered Dietitians at Dairy Farmers of Canada will help you start the year off right and get your kids cooking with you in the kitchen: 1. Let them know they’re welcome. The next time you’re preparing a meal, ask your children to help. Don’t fret over mistakes

or messes – consider it a learning experience for kids to experiment and understand food. 2. Start out simply.

It’s important to build your children’s confidence. Make cooking fun by getting them to try an activity that interests

them or a step from their favourite meal. 3. Build their confidence. Kids need to know

that you trust them in the kitchen. Once they’ve mastered simpler tasks, give them more complex jobs so they stay motivat-

ed to continue cooking. More information on cooking with kids, as well as easy nutritious recipes visit FamilyKitchen.ca.

SOUR CREAM COOKIES Subtle nutmeg flavor and a light cake-like texture make this treat an elegant partner for a cup of afternoon tea. •1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon baking powder •1/2 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon baking soda •1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg •1/2 cup butter or margarine (1 stick), softened •1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar

Boxes and bins filled with holiday decor are taped shut, and lids are snapped on tight. Up to the attic they go. Only select items remain on display, like the string of white indoor mini lights framing my kitchen windows that boost our moods through cold and gloomy wintry days. A hodgepodge of December’s Christmas cards spilling out of a cookie tin also are day brighteners. It’s so much fun to browse through them again, especially with kids. Here are two ideas for enjoying the greetings in new ways when recycled into DIY fun. If some are photo cards, your kids will become more familiar with faces and places as they create. In small bowl, with mixer at high speed, beat egg whites and salt until soft peaks form when beaters are lifted. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Layla and this is my brother Leo. We are about 3 months old and looking for our furever homes. We do not have to go together but that sure would be nice as we sure love to play together. We are both up-to-date on all of our vaccines but we are not Àxed yet as we are not old enough. My brother and I sure are a bundle of energy and love to play and wrestle with each other and we love to cuddle and bird watch. We are getting to know what its like to live in a house with dogs and other cats and so far its okay but larger dogs are a bit scary. It’s the end of the year and we, as sports fans, know what that means: It’s time to take a look back at the great plays and the players who made them, lest we forget. This week we profile two instant legends from the hard court and the rink. Basketball: Stephen Curry How good is Stephen Curry? So good that visiting markets broadcast

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Tonight our dear guinea pig “Sparks” had a heart attack and left us within a couple of hours. There was no chance to take her to an emergency vet. Is tension in the house a cause of

his warm-up routine. So good that he put Davidson College on the map (at least in theory) and gave Oakland its first basketball championship in four decades. So good that Mark Jackson, a former NBA All-Star and coach (including Curry’s), openly fretted that “he’s ruining the game” of basketball. Yes, you read that right. Kim Kardashian breaks the Internet, children break toys, and Stephen Curry breaks basketball. How does he do it? Curry is 6 feet, 3 inches — not a giant by any means — so he knew heart attack in guinea pigs? Is there anything we could have done to prevent this? — Yamile, via email DEAR YAMILE: I’m sorry to hear of Sparks’ death. I’ll try to offer some explanation why, and I encourage my readers to send their advice as well. Heart attack (and stroke) are, sadly, very common causes of sudden death in guinea pigs, a.k.a. cavies. Cavies are very sensitive to their

from the start of his career that he was not going to rely on his physicality to dominate on the inside, nor was he going to spend a large amount of time above the rim. What Curry was able to do was watch his father, Dell Curry, a former NBA star in his own right, and learn how to practice, practice, practice his jump shot, his threepointer, his passing. That was something he could control. It’s paid off in recordsmashing ways ... in fact, he is in a league of his own. His record 286 three-pointers in 2015 surpassed the old mark of 272, set by Stephen

Curry himself in 2013.

environment, particularly changes in temperature. Being unable to rest peacefully also causes stress that affects their system. In short, cavies love a comfortable routine and a rest area sheltered from light and noise. Deficiencies in diet

Price was such a guy. He buried Capitals winger Alexander Ovechkin in first-place votes (1398) and led the league in wins, goals against average and save percentage -- a feat not equaled since Ed Belfour did it in 1991. Price set the Canadians’ record for wins in a season (44, also the NHL season best), not bad considering that the Canadians have a tiny bit of history and lore surrounding the franchise.

No full-time NBA player has ever improved that much in one season, and at 27 years old, it’s safe to say that the best is yet to come for young Master Curry.

Hockey: Casey Price It’s the age-old quandary: Would you rather have strong starting pitching or bleacherblasting home-run hitters on your roster? A superstar quarterback and receiving corps to match, or a sack-happy defensive line with shutdown corners? A prolific goal scorer or a brick wall of a backstop in front of the net? Luckily for us, the NHL has this stuff all figured out. They have this thing called the Hart Trophy, which is awarded to the most valuable player to his team. Last year, the league decided that Montreal goalie Carey

also can be a factor. This can get tricky, so speaking with other cavy owners or vets who specialize in them can help deduce whether a cavy needs a specific type of feed or supplement (too much can be as bad as too little). Because it’s often

hard to detect illness in cavies until they suddenly decline, you should learn a bit of “cavy first aid.” One important step when a cavy takes ill is to contact the vet by phone first and describe the symptoms. Sometimes a cavy is too ill to safely be transported. The vet

might tell you to make your pet comfortable and wait out a very long night — not because he or she doesn’t care, but because the added stress in moving the cavy could be fatal. Send your questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

Hands down the league MVP in 2015 and The Associated Press Athlete of the Year, Curry has become the smiling, family-oriented face of the league. The only scary thing about Curry is that he is improving at a record pace. This season he is averaging more than 30 points per game ... a full seven points higher than his championshipwinning MVP season.

There’s no joke to be made here; picking Price was not wrong. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.
