you eat and be healthy without going to the grocery store?

organizations and accomplish great things for charity all the time but when have you heard of a group that helps feed each other without a store? There’s the problem. Establishing a community that wants to sustain itself and barter without cash for what it needs is almost unheard of. Being able to eat without the grocery store means you will need to supply someone else’s needs as well as your own, and trade as necessary. The question is why would someone feel the need to do this? After all cash has been the bartering tool for a long time. Someone grows

something and sells it to the store for money, then they sell it to you for money after you earn the cash to purchase the item — then repeat. I am not at all against retail grocery stores, but if you had three extra spools of wire from a reno and didn’t have any cash, would the store take them in exchange for food? Not likely, you would have to sell them for cash first. But under agreement your neighbor might be willing to trade food for supplies, create an even better arrangement for both parties, and build a stronger relationship that helps each other. Perhaps most think

this is cheesy and yet, I bet you are like me and would be willing to grow lots of carrots to trade with me for milk, or trade beef for eggs. So you grow the high grade beef, I’ll grow the nutritious vegetables and fruit, someone can grow the best grains, another high quality pork, another supplies excellent butter, milk and cheese.

Let me offer some hope first, yes it can be done but not by just you alone. While it may seem that the good old days when neighbors helped each other and the love and concern for one another has seemingly grown cold, it has only

been lost and can be reinstated. Also consider the days of bartering for goods/food instead of just cash payment. If you approached someone today and said, “How many pounds of carrots for ten pounds of pork?” You won’t find a quick answer — because it has been forgotten but must be returned to society in function and form. To survive and thrive in the arena of food you need a community, and I am not talking about a town. Rather it takes a group of willing and committed people who join together in the same forward motion for the sake of food security. Sure, people join

complaining — just curious. You said that studies have been done on almost everything. Is this one? — W.S.B. ANSWER: I found that a lot of people complain of similar symptoms. I also found that indeed, the autonomic nervous system (the part of the nervous system that regulates temperature, sweat, blood pressure and many other critical aspects of body function without our being consciously aware of it) can be adversely affected by cardiac surgery. Some authors have suggested that the autonomic nervous system changes are one mechanism by which people are more likely to have depression after cardiac surgery. I found several possible explanations why the ANS changes with bypass surgery, but no clear consensus. I would want to be sure that there are no other causes of these symptoms. It sounds like you have had an extensive evaluation, but I

certainly would be concerned about a sudden fast heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart rhythm disturbances in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered a long time with GERD. I was diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous disease. My doctor recommended a procedure called a Nissen fundoplication. Since the procedure, I have not had heartburn again. I would do it again, after what I went through. I get an endoscopy every two years to keep an eye on my disease. — G.D.B. ANSWER: Barrett’s

esophagus is a complication of longstanding reflux. It is diagnosed when the lining of the esophagus starts to look like the lining of the stomach. Barrett’s esophagus can progress to cancer of the esophagus. About 0.2 percent of those with Barrett’s per year will develop cancer, which sounds low, but if you live with the condition for 25 years, that’s about a 5 percent risk. Surgery for reflux disease is done only rarely. However, it is very effective (85 percent to 90 percent). The most common reason to consider surgery is inadequate relief from medications and lifestyle changes. However, severe erosions from acid in the esophagus, inability to take medications, a stricture (partial closure) of the esophagus and Barrett’s esophagus are all reasons to consider surgery. Surgery appears to reduce the risk of cancer more than other treatments.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to

PROBLEM SOLVED

With food prices constantly rising and food quality questionable, people are left with a problem that will never go away and the problem is that it seems only to be getting worse.

Benjamin Galay Several months ago I challenged everyone to turn their power off for two weeks. Many people told me that it just can’t be done in Canada. “It’s too cold up here and our needs are different that in other places around the world.” While our needs may be different, it should not make us more dependent. In this article, I pose a new challenge — can

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had hot flashes, similar to those experienced by post-menopausal women, ever since my coronary bypass in 1990. I can be sitting quietly in a chair reading or at my computer, and suddenly I find myself dripping with perspiration. I also have had panic attacks, with increased heart rate and other physical symptoms. A few years ago, a 24-hour EKG showed heart-rhythm irregularities and that my heart stopped briefly while asleep. If these idiosyncrasies of my autonomic nervous system are a consequence of my time on the heart-lung machine for the bypass, I’m not

College offers Nursing Programs

As the country’s population ages, filling the demand for skilled health care workers becomes an even more important task for post-secondary institutions. Parkland College is doing its part to supply medical professionals to the health regions where they’re needed most, right here in Saskatchewan. Students can enroll at Parkland College to begin a career in health care through a one-year Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) Certificate, a two-year Practical Nursing

Diploma, or a four-year Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) Degree. The CCA program from Sask Polytech runs every year at Parkland College. This certificate program prepares graduates to work in care homes, community health centres, and home care settings. It consists of a mix of theory courses, hands-on lab training, and clinical placements. Students learn to work with disabled, recovering, and chronically and terminally ill people, providing assistance with essen-

tial activities of daily living. The certificate can be taken full-time or part-time.

Another long-running program, the Sask Polytech Practical Nursing Diploma is offered in two-year cycles. It follows a high-demand admissions process and students apply for entry nearly a year in advance. The next program begins in February 2017 and concludes in December 2018. Applications for this program will be available from March 1 to June 30,

2016. Graduates are eligible to write the national licensing examination for registration as Licensed Practical Nurses. Most graduates work in acute care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, medical centres, and extended care facilities. The BSN Degree from the University of Saskatchewan can also be taken entirely in Yorkton. It’s a non-direct entry program, consisting of a preprofessional year of prerequisite university courses, followed by three years of concentrated nursing education and

clinical practice opportunities. Most graduates of the College of Nursing become head nurses, nursing supervisors, graduate nurses, and registered nurses who provide and/ or coordinate patient care in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, nursing agencies, rehabilitation centres, and extended care facilities. Health care is a rewarding career with strong job opportunities. Visit www.parklandcollege.sk.ca for full details about starting on your path to a career in health care.

Record research funding for research Today the federal and provincial governments announced more than $7.8 million in funding for 26 livestock and forage research projects. This record livestock and forage-related investment through the Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) includes the renewal of five year core funding for the Prairie

Swine Centre and the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization. “The livestock industry plays an important role in driving jobs and growth in Saskatchewan and across Canada,” Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay said. “Investments in research projects are key to advan-

cing innovation in our agricultural sector, which will help Canadian farmers feed Canada and the world.” “Our province has a strong and vibrant livestock industry,” Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said. “Today’s investment will ensure producers benefit from research into improved forage varieties, optimization of livestock feeding systems and management of animal diseases.” Examples of research projects include the efficiency of feed and nutrient status based on the core body temperature of beef cattle, comparing

cicer milkvetch varieties and advancing the control of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea. An additional $800,000 was also invested by third party organizations including the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers Association, the Western Grain Research Foundation, the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association and the Saskatchewan Pork Development Board, among others. “We see the benefits of investing in research,” Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association Chair Bill Jameson said. “We know there are long

and short term results for producers and we recognize the success of our industry is dependent on developing knowledge, tools and best practices.” “Enhancing disease control and assessing the effectiveness of current practices is essential to our industry,” Sask Pork’s Chair Florian Possberg said. “The work getting underway is valuable on many levels and the projects are focused on what will benefit industry and build our competitiveness.” The Agriculture Development Fund is designed to create opportunities through research

By Cindy Elavsky Q: I would like to know the name of the actress who plays opposite Jeremy Renner in “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.” I think she was in “Clash of the Titans” too. Any info you have on her would be great. — Guy C., Webster, New York A: You are speaking of the gorgeous and talented Gemma Arterton, who, as you said, also played Io in “Clash of the Titans.” Gemma is one hot commodity right now, and it would take up too

• It was beloved American astrophysicist and science communicator Carl Sagan who made the following sage observation: “If it can be destroyed by the truth, it deserves to be destroyed by the truth.” • You probably are well aware of the fact that caffeine enhances memory and learning in humans — if you’re not a coffee addict yourself, you almost certainly know someone who is. But you probably didn’t know that the substance has the same effect on bees. More than half of all flowering plants produce caffeinated nectar, and tests recently conducted by researchers at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom

Freddy Highmore much space to tell you everything she has coming up, but I will sum up as best I can. Gemma — the Kent, England, native who turns 30 on Feb. 2 — began her acting career in grammar school, starring in numerous school productions, which even-

demonstrate that bees strongly prefer nectar with caffeine to the decaf version. • Some ancient Greeks believed that baldness could be cured by applying to the hairless area a mixture of horseradish and pigeon droppings. • Parents of younger children probably will not be surprised by the following factoid: Six eight-stud Lego bricks can be put together in a whopping 915,103,765 different ways — and at least one of those bricks will end up being stepped on by a barefoot adult. • If you’re planning a trip to Nevada, you might want to keep in mind that in that state, it is technically illegal to kiss if you

tually led to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her first major film role was as Strawberry Fields in “Quantum of Solace,” opposite Daniel Craig’s James Bond. Gemma went on to co-star in “Clash of the Titans,” “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and “Hansel and Gretel.” She has numerous films in production or on the verge of being released, including “Their Finest Hour and a Half” with Bill Nighy, “The Girl with All the Gifts” with Glenn Close, and “A Hundred Streets” with Idris Elba. Q: How much longer till “Bates Motel” returns? It has been renewed for another season, correct? — Dylan H., have a mustache. • For reasons that are not entirely clear at present, in the spring of 2010 a 28-year-old man in South Korea married a large pillow printed with the image of an anime character. At the wedding, the pillow wore a white dress. The man has been

via email A: Norma and Norman Bates will indeed be back for another thrilling season of suspense, drama and, of course, a bit of sociopathic killing. The 10-epsisode fourth season of “Bates Motel” returns to A&E on Monday, March 7, at 9/8c, with Freddie Highmore, Vera Farmiga, Max Thieriot, Nestor Carbonell and company all returning to continue the story of the Alfred Hitchcock seminal character of a boy with serious mommy issues. Also, I had mentioned this a few months back, but don’t forget that the new thriller, “Damien,” will premiere after “Bates.” “Damien” follows the titular character seen taking his “wife” to an amusement park and out to dinner — he even orders “her” a meal. Thought for the Day: “A man’s life is interesting primarily when he has failed — I well know. For it is a sign that he has tried to surpass himself.” — Georges Clemenceau

from “The Omen” horrorfilm series, who is now a 30-year-old war photographer and has forgotten all about his satanic past. Damien Thorn, played by Bradley James, must come to terms with the fact that he is the Antichrist. Q: My grandmom and I love watching “Rizzoli & Isles” together, but I read that the show is ending. Please tell me it isn’t true! — Lydia R., Sacramento, California A: This summer, Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander will return for the seventh and final sea-

son of “Rizzoli & Isles” on TNT. They will star in a shortened 13-episode season. While the show still is a fairly strong performer, TNT head honcho Kevin Reilly said they all “felt like it was time. Everyone said, ‘Let’s go out and finish 13 great ones and call it a day.’” I’ll let you know as soon as I have an exact premiere date for this final season. HOLLYWOOD — 2015 was a year when films, with top stars, couldn’t earn their budgets back at movie box offices. In 2011, Chris Hemsworth burst onto the scene as “Thor” (cost $150 million/gross $450 million). He played Thor again in “The Avengers” (cost $220 million/gross $1.5 billion) and then did “Snow White and the Huntsman” (cost $170 million/gross $396 million). In 2013, “Rush” cost $38 million and grossed $90 million. In 2015 “Thor: The Dark World” cost $170 million and grossed $396 million). “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” cost $280 million and amassed $1.4 billion, followed by a small role in “Vacation” ($31

Hugh Jackman and the classic Peter Pan children’s tale, at a cost of $150 million against a $126 million take. “The Gunman” with Oscarwinners Sean Penn and Javier Bardem, couldn’t cover its $40 million cost, grossing $16 million.

Chris Hemsworth million cost/$105 million gross). But here’s where it went wrong: “Blackhat” cost $70 million and only made $19.6 million, followed by “In the Heart of the Sea” at a cost of $100 million, with only a $76 million take, giving Hemsworth the two biggest losing films of the year. “Pan” couldn’t fly despite the magic of In a medium saucepan, combine uncooked macaroni, green beans and carrots. Cover with water. Bring mixture to a boil. Cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes or until macaroni and vegetables are tender. Drain and rinse under cold water. In a medium bowl, combine celery soup, mayonnaise, parsley flakes and lemon pepper.

•2-1/2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni •1-1/4 cups frozen cut green beans •1-1/2 cups frozen cut carrots •3 cups water •1 (10 3/4-ounce) can reduced-fat cream of celery soup •1/2 cup fat-free mayonnaise •1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes •1/4 teaspoon lemon pepper •2 (6-ounce) cans white tuna, packed in water, drained and flaked •1/4 cup finely chopped onion

Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock’s films usually hit the No. 1 spot in their opening week, but her recent release, “Our Brand Is Crisis,” cost $28 million, grossing only $8 million, probably because of one of the most unappealing titles of the year. Johnny Depp’s “Mortdecai” grossed $47 million but cost $60 million to shoot. “American Ultra,” with Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, must have looked good on paper, but it cost $28 million against $15 million in Add drained macaroni mixture, tuna and onion. ticket sales. “Rock the Kasbah” with Bill Murray, Kate Hudson and Bruce Willis cost $15 million against just a $3.2 million gross. Even Bradley Cooper couldn’t elevate “Aloha” from a $26 million gross to its $37 million budget, despite Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams and Bill Murray in tow. Brad and Angelina Jolie Pitt produced, wrote and directed “By

the Sea,” but it sank to $2.5 million from their investment of $10 million. Robert Redford and Cate Blanchet couldn’t stir “Truth” (about Dan Rather’s firing at CBS) to earn more than $3 million against its $9.6 million cost. Michael Fassbender, as “Steve Jobs,” couldn’t coax more than $25 million to cover its $30 million outlay. Ryan Reynolds’ “Self/less” lost $4 mil-

lion; James Marsden, Eric Stonestreet and Wentworth Miller couldn’t keep “The Loft” from losing $3.9 million; and “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” was short $900,000. Once upon a time major studios bought stories and tailored them to their stars. Maybe some of the executives who made these films will have to boost DVD sales ... door to door, literally!

Is it the flu or a common cold? A20

January 29, 2016 | This Week Marketplace

It’s not always easy to determine if you have a cold or the flu, but knowing the difference helps treatment work quicker at ending your symptoms. It starts with a headache, then chills, followed by a runny nose and an annoying cough. Is this the onset of the dreaded flu or is it just a common cold? It’s easy to confuse them since both illnesses make you feel miserable and have common symptoms, but they’re not the same as they have vital differences. Influenza and the common cold are both caused by a virus, and both can take over a week or two to leave your system. Both are contagious and easily spread. They can also cause similar symptoms, such as nasal congestion, coughing, headache, sore throat and fever. The first clue, however, to help differentiate the flu from a cold is revealed through taking your temperature. A common cold rarely has symptoms of fever above 101 degrees. With the flu, you will probably have a fever initially with the onset of the virus and you will feel miserable with body aches, chills and sweats and crushing fatigue as the most common symptoms. Here are other clues of cold or flu symptoms: Cold • Fever: Sometimes, and usually mild; • Headache:

Occasional; • Aches and pains: Slight; • Fatigue and weakness: Sometimes; • Extreme exhaustion: Never; • Stuffy nose: Common; • Sore Throat: Common; • Chest discomfort and cough: Mild to moderatehacking cough. Flu • Fever: Usual; higher (100-102 F); occasionally higher, especially in young children); lasts 3 to 4 days; • Headache: Common; • Aches and pain: Usual - often sever; • Fatigue and weakness: Usual - can last two to three weeks; • Extreme exhausted: Usual at the onset of illness; • Stuffy nose: Sometimes; • Sore throat: Sometimes; • Chest discomfort and cough: Commoncan become severe. • Another clue is the flu is more common in the winter and early spring while cold symptoms are felt throughout the year. How to treat flu-like and cold symptoms Get lots of rest and drink plenty of fluids especially if you have flu-like symptoms, which may make you lose your appetite or make it hard to retain food. For the flu-like symptoms, look for alternative solution such as homeopathic medicine Oscillococcinum

(‘‘O-sill-o-cox-see-num’’) to reduce the duration of flu-like symptoms, such as fever, chills, body aches and headache when taken at the onset. For colds, look for

other options including Coryzalia to relieve cold symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose and acute rhinitis. If your symptoms become significantly worse after the first three days of

illness, especially if your fever subsides and then returns, be sure to see your doctor. Keep in mind, these homeopathic medicines may not be right for everyone, always

read and follow the label. More information and tips on how to relieve cold and flu symptoms are available at the “Homeopathic Medicine Finder” App at www.boiron.ca/app.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Bridge of Spies” (PG13) — Tom Hanks plays a stalwart American attorney dutifully defending a Soviet spy in this tense Cold-War drama directed by Steven Spielberg. James B. Donovan (Hanks) is appointed to defend Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) after Abel is caught smuggling intel in 1957. The judge, prosecutor and everyone else but Donovan sees this as a show trial leading up to an execution. Why did it take me so long to put “Baked Oatmeal” on our family’s wake-up menu? I was completely enthralled with the tasty porridgebased dish at a bed and breakfast in Chicago last year. Prepared to Goldilocks’ “just right” standard, I recall how the serving’s perfect, cinnamony smooth middle complemented the crispy edges. Doused with warm milk and topped with my choice of dried apricots, it was satisfying — and, it kept me going through a vigorous morning of sightseeing. I left the memory on the back burner — until now. Here’s a basic, failproof recipe you and your kids can tinker with seasonally. That means a mix and match of addins and add-ons to satisfy one’s own tastes. Ground flax? Toss it in. Chia seeds, sprinkle them on top. Raspberries in season? Lake Bell, Simon Pegg in “Man Up” under the shadow of the newly built Berlin Wall. The film has a few bursts of deftly directed energy — Spielberg’s still got it — but overall goes for a more moody and nostalgic tone. Hanks is understated in his performance, inhabiting the role of the Everyman who hasn’t yet lost his mind to the hysteria of the era.

“Suffragette” (PG-13) — Maud (Carey Mulligan) lives in early 20th-century London — and not the whimsical chipper part. She works long hours at the same industrial laundry plant that scalded her mother to death; she barely sees her own child; she lives in one of the world’s great metropolises, but she can’t even

“Man Up” (R) — This British romantic-comedy manages to put refreshing fun back into the formula without becoming an overt parody of the genre. Much of that is owed to its stars, Simon Pegg (“Shaun of the

Dead,” “Star Trek”) and Lake Bell (check out her writing/directing/starring debut about voiceactors, “In a World ...”). The wacky circumstances of their courtship start when Jack (Pegg) mistakes Nancy (Bell) for his blind date. Nancy, in a flash of spontaneity, overcomes her cynicism and goes along with the date, until all sorts of chemical reactions start taking place. “Truth” (R) — Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford star in this dramatization of a journalistdrama from our recent past. During the 2004 presidential election, “60 Minutes” veteran journalist Mary Mapes and venerated newsman Dan Rather were publicly disgraced and lost their careers after a piece that questioned George W.

The story is based on true events, but takes dramatic liberties in combining and creating characters to serve the storytelling. Helena Bonham Carter has a nice supporting role as one of Maud’s intrepid friends, and Meryl Streep delivers a weighty cameo as feminist leader Emmeline Pankhurst.

Bush’s military service in the Texas Air National Guard. The reporting was based on a military memo, one that turned out to be a fraud. This film, based on Mapes’ memoirs and directed by first-timer James Vanderbilt, unpacks the conflict and looks at the scandal anew, questioning whether Rather and Mapes deserved to go down the way they did.

Almonds are a healthy food choice. They’re high in protein, vitamin E, fiber and minerals such as magnesium, selenium, manganese, zinc, potassium, iron, phosphorus, omega-3 fatty acids and calcium. Almond milk also is a healthy food choice. Drinking almond milk can help to lower LDL cholesterol and protect against heart disease. Almond milk has zero saturated fats and is lower in calories than cow’s milk. It has been used by many people who have allergies, lactose intolerance, diabetes or heart disease. Some consumers prefer almond milk solely because of taste and flavor. Many people are using plant-based milks like almond milk in the place of cow’s milk. Why is it so popular? And which milk is better for you — almond milk or cow’s milk? Cow’s milk provides many nutrients your body needs. It contains calcium, potassium, vitamin D and protein, all of which help to improve bone health and manage blood pressure. Because of its health benefits, the USDA recommends three servings of dairy per day for the average adult. Despite the many nutrients cow’s milk provides, the U.S. has seen a decline in sales of cow’s milk and an increase in sales in plant-based milks. Almond milk in particular has grown in popularity since 2011. While it has many healthy factors to consider, almond milk falls short nutritionally in many ways in comparison to cow’s milk. Although many almond milk brands are lower in calories than cow’s milk (unsweetened almond milk has about 40 calories per cup), it’s also very low in protein. Most of the protein is lost

lying medical conditions. If you consume dairy, you may want to purchase both almond milk and cow’s milk and incorporate both into your diet to take advantage of their mutual benefits. My recipe for Creamed Spinach with Crunchy Almond Topping uses almond milk in the place of dairy to create a creamy, delicious side dish that’s lower in calories but full of flavor.

during processing, resulting in water and almond water as the main ingredients. Most almond milk provides only 1 gram of protein per serving compared to 8 grams of protein per serving from cow’s milk. Almond milk also is lower in potassium than cow’s milk. Almond milk comes in many varieties, including sweetened, unsweetened, dark chocolate and vanilla. Some of these versions have added sugars, which the USDA warns will count against your maximum limit of “empty calories” (calories from solid fats and added sugars). The U.S. Department of Agriculture states that calcium-fortified beverages such as almond milk may provide the recommended amount of calcium, but may not provide other nutrients found in dairy products. The important thing to remember is to check the nutrition-facts label — look for milk or milk products that have adequate amounts of calcium, vitamin D and protein. Aim for products that are low in added sugars and saturated fats. The bottom line is simple, whether its cow’s milk or almond milk, the value of the product you choose depends on its composition, your nutrient needs and any under-

CREAMED SPINACH WITH CRUNCHY ALMOND TOPPING •4 (5-ounce) bags baby spinach •4 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus 1 tablespoon for greasing baking dish •1/2 small sweet onion, thinly sliced •3 tablespoons allpurpose flour •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon lemon pepper •2 cups unsweetened almond milk •1/2 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano or Cotija cheese •1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg •3/4 cup panko (Japanese bread crumbs) •2 tablespoons finely chopped marcona almonds

Stir in cheese, nutmeg and spinach. Spoon into a buttered, 2-quart baking dish. In a small bowl, melt remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Stir in the panko and almonds, and sprinkle over the creamed spinach. Bake for 15 minutes, until golden. Makes 4-6 servings. Heat oven to 425 F. In a large saucepan, heat 1 inch of water. Add the spinach by the handful; allow each handful to wilt before adding more. When the spinach is wilted, drain it, pressing out as much water as possible. Wipe out the pot. Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in the pot. Add the onions; cook over moderate heat until softened. Stir in flour, salt and lemon pepper, and cook for 1 minute. Add almond milk and simmer until very thick, whisking occasionally, 5 minutes.

When you don’t know anything about history, it’s easy to say things like, “we live in a very spectacular time.” Phrases like, “never been done before” and “greatest of all-time” get tossed around and played with. While some of this is true — we, as a species, build off of our experience to progress to another level — most of the time they’re just empty platitudes. Great people slip from this vale of tears all the time, and unless they made one mark to be remembered for, their fame is fleeting. The Alabama Crimson Tide will never have that problem. Sports, better than any other discipline, with the possible

exception of the folks behind the Periodic Table of Elements, keeps score. We have lists and lists filled with names with numbers attached; the lists grow longer, but the names never fade. In America, particularly over the past seven years, Alabama, with its four most-recent championships and 16 overall, and its coach, Nick Saban, has made its mark. With their thrilling win over Clemson on Jan. 11, the Crimson Tide may have done something even more important: They may have saved football. The sport is reeling. When the Fresh Prince of Philadelphia is starring in movies about concussions, your sport is in trouble. When grown men with arcadelike nicknames dressed up like Bengal tigers push and shove coaches after making illegal hits to the head on national

TV, setting up the opposing team for a win, your sport is in trouble. When fans start worrying about what defensive back said on Instagram or Twitter both before and after the game more than the game itself, your sport is in trouble. When you finally get a championship playoff and you move the games to New Year’s Eve and nobody watches and the games are lackluster and dull ... again, there’s a problem. And while many peo-

ple will say, actually, it’s kind of getting boring watching Alabama win every year, you have to ask them if they were watching. Because as soon as the 30-minute pre-game show with every recording artist we’re supposed to know singing the same song that nobody can ever sing better than Ray Charles or Whitney Houston did finally end and the actual game started, it was like ... transcendent. It takes schools like Clemson and

Alabama to fill a stadium with orange and red, split right down the middle like that. The telecast by ESPN was incredible; I was flipping through all 18 of its channels getting every play and loving every second of it. Two teams battling it out like giants from the first to the last play. Derrick Henry rips off a touchdown run. Deshaun Watson -- the guy who had everyone saying “Vince Young” for a quarter until firmly cementing

his own name into the upper echelon of the game — would stand up like they called offsides and then suddenly snap like a cat hearing a vacuum cleaner, tossing darts all over the field (and covering the point spread ... just saying). And wouldn’t you know? Nick Saban really does know how to smile. What a spectacular time, right? Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

• Although it has been a mild winter so far, I am still having issues with cracked skin around my fingers. I have found a treatment that works to ease the discomfort. At night, I slather petroleum jelly on the cracks, then follow up with a pair of cotton gloves. I leave these on while I am watching television and puttering around the house. I find them uncomfortable to sleep in, but you could try that instead. I cover the worst cracks with a bandage. They are noticeably better the next day. • If your comforter or duvet cover is a solid or neutral or understated pattern, choose a throw General Employment

Opt for homemade dessert this Valentine’s Day Dessert might not be a nightly staple for many couples, but it is an indulgence couples allow themselves on special occasions, including Valentine’s Day. While nice restaurants often boast impressive dessert menus, men and women who want to go the extra mile for their significant others this Valentine’s Day may want to make a homemade dessert to enjoy upon arriving home after dinner. If expanding your dessert horizons is on your to-do list, then consider combining blueberries and corn in this unique yet delicious recipe for “Sweet Corn Créme Brûlée With Blueberries” courtesy of Marguerite Marceau Henderson’s “Small Sweet Treats” (Gibbs Smith). SWEET CORN CRÉME BRÛLÉE WITH BLUEBERRIES Makes 8 servings Custard •2 cups fresh corn kernels, scraped from 2 ears of corn

•4 tablespoons unsalted butter •3-1⁄2 cups half-andhalf •1⁄8 teaspoon ground nutmeg •1 teaspoon vanilla extract •8 large egg yolks •3⁄4 cup sugar Topping •1 cup fresh blueberries •1⁄4 cup sugar Place the corn in a saucepan with the butter; cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until the corn is softened and fragrant; set aside. Heat the half-and-half, nutmeg and vanilla in a saucepan until the cream is bubbling slightly. Add the cooked corn to the half-and-half mixture and let steep for 15 to 20 minutes. Place the mixture in a blender or food processor and blend until the corn is slightly pureed, but not completely liquified. Beat the egg yolks and 3⁄4 cup sugar in a mixer until light yellow and thickened. Slowly add the corn mixture to the

Did you know? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, research has shown that strengthening exercises are safe and effective for men and women of all ages, including seniors. The CDC also notes that men and women with heart disease or arthritis may benefit the most from exercise regimens that include lifting weights several times per week. A strength-training program at Tufts University enlisted older men and women with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis. The program lasted 16 weeks, and by the end of those 16 weeks, participants reported that their pain had decreased by an average of 43 percent while also decreasing the disability caused by their

conditions. In addition to the benefits uncovered in the Tufts program, strength training can benefit older men and women by improving balance and flexibility, which can decrease their likelihood of falling and the severity of those falls if they do slip.

egg yolks, beating until completely mixed. Pour into eight 1-cup ramekins, filling each almost full. Place the ramekins in a baking pan. Pour hot water into the baking pan until it is halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake on the middle rack of the oven at 300 F for 35 to 40 minutes, until set. Cool in refrigerator for 2 to 24 hours, covered lightly with plastic wrap.

When ready to serve, lightly sprinkle the tops of the custard with the remaining sugar. Heat a broiler and brown the tops of the custard for 3 to 4 minutes, just until the sugar melts and is golden. How to maintain your mental focus This Week Marketplace | January 29, 2016

The technological advancements made in the 21st century have undoubtedly made life easier in many ways, but this golden age of gadgets has not come without some negative side effects. Thanks to the near-constant availability of the Internet and devices like smartphones and tablets, many men and women find it difficult to maintain their focus throughout the day. But while such distractions are never too far away, there are some ways to stay focused and productive. • Get more exercise. Studies have shown that exercise and improved mental focus are linked. In a 2013 analysis of 19 studies involving more

than 500 children, teenagers and young adults, researchers found that exercise sessions between 10 and 40 minutes immediately boosted concentration and mental focus. That improvement might be a result of exercise increasing blood flow to the brain. Men and women who find themselves struggling to focus at work after lunchtime may benefit from incorporating some exercise, whether it’s a brief walk or a more strenuous workout, into their midday routines. • Perform breathing exercises. Nervousness is an oft-overlooked cause of loss of focus. When nervous, breath can become shallow and restricted, which can

have a negative impact on the flow of oxygen to your brain, making it more difficult to concentrate. Professional athletes have long espoused to the virtues of breathing exercises as a means to calming their nerves, and professionals can follow suit. Some simple breathing exercises can help busy professionals multitask more effectively by helping them concentrate on the tasks at hand and overcome the distraction of having so much to do at one time. • Stay hydrated. A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that dehydration caused loss of focus and a sense of fatigue among women. While the loss of focus was consid-

ered insubstantial and the study only examined women, remaining hydrated throughout the day may make it easier to focus on work and other tasks throughout the day. • Get adequate sleep. One of the best ways to improve focus during the day is to make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night. Sleep deprivation produces a host of nega-

tive consequences, not the least of which is its impact on cognitive functioning. Research has shown that sleep deprivation compromises alertness and concentration, making it more difficult to focus at work and tackle tasks that require deep analysis and thought. In addition, a survey from the National Sleep Foundation found that

A29

sleep-deprived men and women are less likely to exercise and eat healthy diets, each of which can boost mental acuity. Focusing in today’s atmosphere of constant distractions can be difficult, but men and women can overcome diversions by employing a handful of successful strategies aimed at improving concentration.

Storage solutions

Finding storage solutions to organize a home can be a daunting task, whether it’s for a small condo closet or a spacious family room filled with toys. These simple DIY tips will overhaul key areas in the home to give you a more efficient space from top to bottom. Closet Organization “Chances are if you can’t see an item of clothing in that crammed space, you aren’t likely to wear it, says a local Home Depot associate. Instead, use a closet kit that includes hanging rods, shelving and hardware for an easy DIY installation that will upgrade any walkin or reach-in closet. Leverage vertical space for small closets by hanging double rods for shorter garments. Wire shelves are a good addition to hold clothing and other linens, allowing air to pass through so fabrics can breathe, and ultimately last longer. Laundry Solutions Two large machines are enough to monopolize the space in a laundry room, so well-placed storage solutions are key. Associates at Home Depot recommend hanging a wall cabinet above your laundry machines to store detergent and other products that need to be out of reach of children and pets.

If you own a front load laundry pair, install work surfaces on top that include handy pockets to store your cleaning supplies. Out-of-the-box thinking, like building your own wall-hanging clothes rack that folds out when you need to hang clothes to dry, and snaps back to the wall when not in use, can help for small laundry spaces. Basement Storage If you have a finished basement, it can be a great space for the family to enjoy. However, everything a family uses for down time can easily turn into clutter overload. Consider under-stair shelving to make use of an often-wasted space. Find furniture that serves dual purposes – like a bench for seating that also has room for storage inside. You can tuck away the board games for family game night when they’re not in use. Never underestimate the power of totes. Clear totes can help you to organize and store items that aren’t in use, and make finding everything easy. Alternatively, opt for totes in colourful or textured versions that can add a punch of personality to open shelving. More storage solutions are available at www. homedepot.ca.

Reading can benefit the body in many ways This Week Marketplace | January 29, 2016

Many people are avid readers, feeling that a good book remains the most entertaining form of escapism. But reading provides more than just an opportunity to leave the daily grind behind. While many people may read to immerse themselves in something other than a movie or a television show, they may not know about all the additional benefits they are enjoying when cuddling up with a good book. • Reading can improve brain function. A recent study from researchers at Emory University discovered that reading a novel can improve

brain function in various ways. During the study, researchers found that reading fiction improves connectivity in the brain. In addition, reading fiction improved readers’ ability to put themselves in other peoples’ shoes, which might help them relate better to people in both the present and future. • Reading can benefit long-term brain health. While readers engrossed in a great book might only be worried about what’s coming on the next page, the benefits to reading are much more longterm than the next chapter. Researchers at the Rush University Medical

Center in Chicago found that reading is one of a handful of mentally stimulating activities that can benefit brain health in old age. In their Rush Memory and Aging Project, researchers examined nearly 300 elderly men and women, giving them tests of memory and thinking throughout the final years of their lives. When participants, who were surveyed as to how often they engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as reading, passed away, their brains were

examined for signs of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Researchers discovered that the participants who engaged in mentally challenging activities most often had slower rates of memory decline. In addition, even those who had symptoms of brain damage that are commonly associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia seemed to benefit from the stimulation that mentally challenging activities produced. • Reading can help reduce stress. Another big benefit of reading is

its relationship to stress. According to a 2009 study from researchers at the University of Sussex in England, reading can reduce stress by up to 68 percent. In addition, reading might help relieve that stress even faster than other forms of stress relief because it allows for a more immediate escape from the stress of daily life. • Reading can help you get a more restful night’s sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, engaging in a calming activity for an

A31

hour before going to bed can help your body wind down and ready itself for sleep. Some people may struggle to fall asleep after reading on an electronic device, such as a tablet or e-reader, as the light that emanates from such devices may be activating the brain. If need be, stick to reading traditional print books and magazines before going to bed. Reading is not only a favorite activity for many people, but it’s also something that can benefit the body in myriad ways.

Family-friendly recipe

Building memories and important life skills is easy when cooking becomes a family event and the New Year is the perfect time for your family to start cooking together. A great way to get your children cooking is by including them in the preparation of a weekend family breakfast or brunch. This can be a simple and fun way to involve the whole family. The more kids are exposed to cooking the more fun they will find it. The Registered Dietitians at Dairy Farmers of Canada have developed recipes that identify appropriate steps for parents and kids to divide and conquer meal preparation. Try this simple but impressive family breakfast recipe. When cooking, parents can manage the steps that involve knives or the stovetop and children can take care of the rest. STUFFED CREPES WITH EGGS, CHEDDAR, HAM AND VEGGIES Ingredients: • 3 tbsp (45 mL) butter • 1-2/3 to 2 cups (375 to 500 mL) finely diced vegetables • 8 eggs beaten • 2 tbsp (30 mL) chopped fresh herbs of your choice • Salt and freshly

ground pepper, to taste • 6 large, thin crepes, homemade or storebought • 6 to 12 slices ham • 1-2/3 to 2 cups (375 to 500 mL) shredded medium Canadian Cheddar cheese • Fresh fruit for serving Directions: With supervision, kids can preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Parents dice the vegetables. With supervision, kids can melt 2 tbsp (30 mL) butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Add vegetables and cook for 3 to 4 minutes and remove from pan. In a bowl, mix beaten eggs, herbs, salt and pepper. Melt remaining butter in same pan and cook egg mixture as an omelette or as scrambled eggs. With supervision, kids can cover each crepe with ham. Divide vegetables and eggs among crepes, placing along one edge of each crepe. Sprinkle with cheese and roll up. Place in an ovenproof dish lined with parchment paper. Parents place crepes in the oven for 12 to 15 minutes. Kids can serve with their favourite fresh fruit. More easy and nutritious recipes are available at FamilyKitchen.ca.
