Estimated $21,500 raised for College scholarships The 11th annual Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic, held Friday at Deer Park Golf Course in Yorkton, raised an estimated $21,500 for the Parkland College scholarship fund. The Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic is the College’s largest single scholarship fundraiser. The event has now raised at least $20,000 five years running. Proceeds from past events helped Parkland College award almost $200,000 in scholarships in 2015-16. “This event is huge for our students, said Dollars for Scholars organizer Brendan Wagner. “All the money raised stays in the
Parkland Region, benefitting students who want to learn here, stay here, and build a career here. The Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic is made possible by generous contributions from numerous community supporters, volunteers, and sponsors. Banquet sponsor R H Electric and Platinum sponsors Farrell Agencies, Logan Stevens Construction, SaskTel, and RBC Financial Group played key roles in the success of the tournament. Parkland College also thanks the 19 Gold Sponsors, 10 Silver sponsors, dozens of Bronze sponsors, and two holein-one sponsors for their
donations of cash and prizes. A total of 115 golfers supported the scholarship fund with their entry fees. The 12th annual Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic is tentatively scheduled for June 23, 2017 at Deer Park. About Parkland College: Parkland College strives to help students in East Central Saskatchewan achieve their goals and build the foundation for successful careers. Students can choose from a wide array of educational options, including university degrees, skills training diplomas and certificates, trades training,
high school upgrading, safety training, and corporate/professional
development. Parkland College is a learnercentered organization
and is proud to be one of Saskatchewan’s Top Employers for 2016.

I really admire the pioneers who boldly made their way across the prairies, settled on their new property and did whatever they could to survive. I have never met anyone who could say they lived in a sod house, and I have also never met anyone who said they would consider trying it in todays world. Which leads to a fundamental problem… are we living life today expecting to be taken care of, or like the pioneers doing whatever we can to survive? As I have mentioned many times over the past year, our reliance upon “readily available’ water, gas, power, food — medicine, has made us a bit lazy and complacent. I am the first to admit I want
PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay Let me start off with a definition of what I what I would call myself, the term is “Modern Pioneer”. Meaning I want to live off the land but use any new information or technology to help me, the pioneer part means going into new territory almost alone.
• Talk to your kids now about storm preparedness. Help them pack a bag of items that they would want to have with them if you needed to evacuate. Then build a fort in your living room and go without power for an evening. Talk about things that are difficult, and how it might be if you had to hang out for a few days or a week like this. Talking about disaster when it’s not real can help kids (and adults) feel capable of handling themselves when it does strike! • A few ideas for keeping your car smelling and looking its best: keep a sheet of fabric softener or a small bowl of orange peels under the seat, remove food wrappers or drink cups daily, fill the ashtray with baking soda or cat litter, drive with the windows down once in a while to let it air out. • “Going on a flight? Take an empty water bottle, and fill it up AFTER you pass through security. Raw veggies, nuts and crackers make better snacks than what you’ll find on-board. You can bring your own tea bags and ask for hot water.” — J.H. in Florida • “If you like salads, but they just don’t fill you up or keep you full for long, try adding a little whole grain to them. Quinoa in a spinach salad will add a bit of protein and fiber for a longer-lasting full feeling.” — H.T. in Oregon

things to be as easy or convenient, and certainly those who have worked hard all their life need things to stay simple and easy now in the golden years. Providing for yourself is challenging and tough sometimes, but has its rewards. First, lets take the comparison of cooking supper in modern and pioneer styles: In modern times you would buy some food at a store, drive home in your car, turn on the oven, use an electric mixer, cook your food and put your dishes in the dishwasher. In the pioneer way, you will hunt down your food or kill and clean an animal you have raised and pick the vegetables out of the garden, then go chop some wood and would likely have to have cut some a long time ago so its ready to burn, bring it in the house and make
a fire, wait for the right temperature, use a hand mixer to blend, cook the food, then haul some water and boil it, then do you dishes by hand — and that is the same method everyday! What I want is a blend of both, with the readily available options in case the convenient way is no longer available. The pioneer way sounds difficult and strenuous, but at least I am the one who can provide all of those things. The modern way is dependent, I must financially provide for the convenience and am hoping that upon affording the convenience that there is gasoline available, the store is open, that electricity is on, and well — that those dishes will have to get done somehow! I am often asked “You’re not one of those guys that thinks the sky
is falling, a prepper and such are you?” Not really, however I see the pioneer way as peaceful and enjoyable albeit difficult. I still have a business to run and a job to do, and takes the fear out of “What would we do if…” I think a helpful phrase is “Life’s not so hard if you do the hard things for yourself”. We have convenience today, but it could be stressful and very hard without those easily available ways. Do yourself a favor pick one area of your lifestyle and ask how you could provide this yourself? Maybe you will figure out a modern way to do it yourself — perhaps make your gasoline (crazy but true!), grow food in your basement, build a solar cook stove, and so much more. I cannot say this enough, as my passion stems from wanting people to have

what they need without being dependent on a fragile system and not just for ourselves but for others who cannot. connected by the Qu’Appelle River system, which in itself provides stellar fishing. There are dozens of places where shore fishing is a great option. Also, the river supports a thriving population of channel catfish, which are highly unusual in Saskatchewan. Pasqua Lake, like the other Calling Lakes, is known for its walleye, pike and perch, and the open water fishing is terrific. Once the water freezes, though, the lakes get really busy. Ice fishing on the Calling Lakes can be spectacular. Online forums such as Ice Shanty are packed full of pictures of monster pike and walleyes. Plenty of videos on YouTube show large walleye coming out of the lake in the winter, some as large as 8 pounds. Anglers can try fishing the rock slide on the north side of the lake’s west end, the flats in the same area or Indian Point. For targetting walleye, they note that blades with crawlers,

Pasqua Lake, as well as the other Fishing Lakes, may be a good place to practise your fly fishing. Cloudy days are best, and early-season patterns such as leeches are good options. Enigma_Nick, in the Weedbed Blog, suggests that wind is great for walleye, because it hides them from their predators and disorients their prey. Baitfish, leeches, and larger insects are excellent food sources for walleye, and they will chase down their prey rather than wait for it. LAKE ACCESS

Cory Stupak of Yorkton tees off on a rainy day at the Rocanville Doubles Disc Golf Tournament June 26.
Players fight weather at Rocanville’s inaugural tourney The team of Chris Istace of Moosomin and Cory Stupak of Yorkton fired a two-over-par 31 to win the inaugural Rocanville Disc Golf Club Team Doubles Classic on Sunday, June 26. The event hosted a thin field of competitors fighting stiff winds, rain and extremely wet ground conditions at Rocanville’s 18-hole course located just south of town. After golfing the frontnine, the players were flighted into teams, then continued through to the back nine. Although the tournament was scheduled to include 36-holes of play, the event was suspended after 18 due to rain. Istace/Stupak fell behind early with a bogey on Hole 11, but birdie deuces on 13 and 14 pulled them equal with the Yorkton pairing of Doug Kerr and Trevor Lyons. The difference in the match came at Hole 17, where Istace/ Stupak nailed a par-saving putt out of the bush while Kerr/Lyons dropped a bogey. Kerr/Lyons finished the day with a score of 32, while Moosomin’s Joshua Istace and Yorkton’s Calvin Daniels placed third with a 36.
The Team Doubles Classic was the first event to be hosted at the new Rocanville facility, which runs along the Rocanville Cross Country Ski Club’s trail system about two kilometres south of the town on Webster Cemetery Road. Despite the lower-than-expected number of entries, the tournament had incredible support from area sponsors. Lunch and prizes were provided by CDI Injury Recovery Centre, while the remaining prize contributors included Universe Satellite Sales, Glenda’s Travel at Travel Only and Kenhome Construction from Rocanville; Jeannot Electric, Stand Up Construction, Mullett’s Rona, Evolution Hair Studio and Twin Auto in Moosomin; and Laurie’s Construction 2007 in Whitewood. Members of the Rocanville Disc Golf Club will continue to meet at 6 pm every Tuesday evening for league play through to the end of September. Guests and members of the public wanting to try the sport are welcome to join in the fun. — Submitted by the Parkland Association of Disc Golf

DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like to comment on your column regarding blood-pressure differences between the arms. A difference of greater than 10 mmHg between the two arms in systolic pressure is considered abnormal. We see patients not uncommonly in consultation for this reason alone, perhaps as many as one a month. Almost always, the reason for the difference is

blockage of the subclavian artery. The wrist pulse on the side with lower blood pressure may be normal, diminished or absent in those patients. From 30 years of observation, I have noticed that patients with BP differences between the arms are nearly always female smokers (or former smokers), and the left subclavian is much more likely to be affected (have a lower blood pressure) than the right. Why this sex difference should be and why the left side should predominate is not understood and, to my knowledge, has not been described in print. Additionally, the presentation is usually in a non-obese woman in
her 40s or 50s who is still smoking. The significance of the finding is that it is a red flag waving for tobacco cessation and is a marker that that person’s arteries have already been significantly altered by the habit. Fortunately, the incidence of arm symptoms associated with the lower BP on that side is quite low — perhaps 1 in 10 have any symptoms. It is important, of course, for such patients to be aware of the difference between the arms only to remember which arm (the higher arm systolic number) has the correct measurement (most often, but not always, the right). — Jerry Svoboda, MD, FACS
ANSWER: I thank Dr. Svoboda for his expertise and will add difference in arm blood pressures to my (already very long list) of reasons to quit smoking immediately. DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve heard many medical providers say that they believe they get more accurate blood pressure readings from the old-fashioned manual method, rather than the automatic cuff machines. I wonder how true this can be, though, since the former is subject to human hearing ability. My excellent hearing lets me pick up on beats far beyond what someone who has average hearing can detect, so it stands to reason that there would
Crichton. HBO describes the 10-episode series as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.” It stars Anthony Hopkins, James Marsden, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood and Ben Barnes, and features a whole slew of supporting characters, including “The Hunger Games” alumnus Bruno Gunn. I spoke with Bruno recently, and he’s thrilled to be a part of this
“groundbreaking series.” Bruno revealed: “It was my first period piece — it’s set back in time of the Wild West — it was just mind-blowing. What really impressed me the most was the authenticity of it all.” He also told me that the set was a joy to work on: “Every single person I came in contact with was fantastic. I’m working with James Marsden; he and I have a scene together, and he was terrific. We were bouncing
ideas off each other and trying this and that to see what happens. That’s what any actor really wants to do; get in there and just play around.” Bruno also has a feature film coming up called “Officer Downe,” which has been getting rave reviews as being a groundbreaking entry into the graphic-novel film genre. He told me: “No one has seen anything like this. This is an R-rated movie, much in the vein of ‘Deadpool,’ and it doesn’t shy away from its origins. It is a punch in the face that the film world has been waiting for.” Q: You mentioned a few weeks ago that the producers of “Nashville” were in talks to take the series to another network. Have they found a taker? — Julie R. in West Virginia A: CMT has come through for all of us “Nashville” fans. On the heels of a tremendous outcry from legions of devoted fans, CMT, Hulu, Lionsgate and ABC Studios announced that the critically acclaimed series will return with a brand-new season on CMT. Longtime partner Hulu will continue to offer all “Nashville” episodes available to stream the day after they air on CMT. In another surprising move, the renewal is for a full 22-episode season (usually cable pickups are only about 13 episodes). READERS: Here’s
Government amends feral Wild Boar regulations The Government of Saskatchewan has amended The Wildlife Regulations and The Stray Animals Regulations to clarify the status and hunting requirements for feral or free-ranging wild boar. “Free-ranging or feral wild boar have the potential to become a serious provincial problem,” Environment Minister Herb Cox said. “These amendments address ongoing concern for public safety and protection of wildlife and habitat.” Amendments to The Wildlife Regulations now allow Saskatchewan hunters to hunt wild boar without a licence, while still maintaining reasonable safety expectations such as asking permission to hunt on private property and not hunting along roads or road allowances. The removal of stray animal designation that currently applies to wild boar means that local rural municipalities that
administer The Stray Animals Act and its regulations are no longer responsible for wild boar capture and containment. Stricter fencing requirements for farmed wild boar are intended to reduce the number of wild boar that escape. “The move to regulate escaped wild boar as exotic wildlife instead of stray livestock enables landowners and producers to better protect their livestock, crops and pasture,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said. “I also encourage anyone looking for support in controlling escaped wild boar to take part in the Feral Wild Boar Control Program administered by the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation.” Wild boar are a species from Asia and Europe, and were imported to Saskatchewan in the late 1970s as domestic livestock. They escaped from farms and created reproducing populations

in wild areas throughout the province. Free-ranging wild boar populations have been reported in more than 60 rural municipalities across southern Saskatchewan. Wild boar have damaged golf courses and crops, harassed livestock, threatened people, destroyed fragile plant communities and can transfer diseases to domestic hogs. “SARM is pleased with these changes as escaped wild boar pose a danger to people, personal property, other wildlife and to livestock,” Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities President Ray Orb said. “We need to make sure their population is kept under control and are hopeful these regulatory changes will achieve that.” For additional information on the Feral Wild Boar Control Program, contact Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation at 1-888-9350000.

be a difference in the reading. — C.B. ANSWER: The very best machines are accurate at measuring blood pressure; however, a trained clinician remains the standard for blood pressure measurement. Fortunately, good, but not necessarily outstanding, hearing is required for accurate blood pressure measurement. Proper placement and inflation of the cuff, the correct slow deflation rate and, importantly, measuring both arms are as significant as good hearing. I was taught to take an average of three measurements. Excellent hearing helps the clinician pick up on subtle heart mur-

Shrink and its impact on your operation by Natasha Wilkie, PAg Regional Livestock Specialist Regional Services Branch Shrink is yet another factor for livestock producers to consider when determining how to maximize their operations’ profits. Shrink is the amount of weight an animal loses from the time it is initially handled for transport until the net sale weight is taken. During this time, the animal has been sorted, transported, perhaps left to stand for a period of time and
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You clever Ewes and Rams love nothing more than to rise to a challenge. So, by all means, if you feel sure about your facts, step right up and defend your side of the issue. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’ve done some great work recently. Now it’s time to reward yourself with something wonderful, perhaps a day at a spa or a night out with someone very special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You love to talk, but don’t forget to make time to do a little more listening; otherwise, you could miss out on an important message someone might be trying to send to you. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect indicates some uncertainty about one of your goals. Use this period of shifting attitudes to reassess what you really want and what you’re ready to do to get it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your social life is picking up, and you’ll soon be mingling with old friends and making new ones. But ‘twixt the fun times, stay on top of changing workplace conditions. finally weighed. There are two types of shrink to consider: a) excretory shrink and b) tissue shrink. Their names are fairly self-explanatory. Excretory shrink can quickly be recovered once an animal is back on feed; however, recovery from tissue shrink can take much longer, with estimates ranging from 10 to 36 days. There are a few ways a livestock producer can minimize shrink loss. The method of handling and the handling facilities affect how much weight an animal loses as well as weather, live-
stock temperament, the number of animals on the truck and a host of other factors. Losses can be minimized by management practices such as using experienced cow hands when sorting and loading/unloading or not overloading the livestock carrier during transport. Calf weight and diet also play a role in how much weight livestock will lose during stressful times. Younger calves, particularly unweaned calves, are more susceptible to shrinkage than older, heavier feeder cattle. Providing animals with dry feed before handling
long-pent-up feelings. Now, move on from there and start making the changes you’ve put off all this time. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might well feel uneasy as you face a difficult situation involving someone close to you. But you know you’re doing the right thing, so stick with your decision. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You’re a good friend to others. Now’s the time to allow them to be good friends to you. Rely on their trusted advice to help you get through an uncertain period. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Family and friends are always important, but especially so at
this time. Despite your hectic workplace schedule, make a real effort to include them in your life. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) That project you’ve been working on is almost ready for presentation. But you still need some information from a colleague before you can consider it done. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t let those negative attitudes that have sprung up around you drain your energies. Shrug them off, and move ahead with the confidence that you can get the job done. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Aspects favor some dedicated fun time for the hardworking Piscean. A nice, refreshing plunge into the social swim can recharge your physical and emotional batteries. BORN THIS WEEK: You love to travel and be with people. You probably would be happy as a social director on a cruise ship.

them can also slightly decrease shrinkage. Producers can also minimize their economic losses from shrink by determining the amount of pencil shrink a buyer will deduct. When selling calves, there are times when shrink is negotiable and it can affect the bottom line. For example, selling 700-pound calves at $2.05 per pound with four per cent pencil shrink can result in lower returns than taking an offer of $2.00 per pound and zero per cent shrink (700lb. x 96% x 2.05/lb. = $1,378/calf, while 700lb. x 100% x $2.00/lb. = $1,400/ calf). This difference can add up when selling the
entire calf crop. Producers can market their animals a number of ways and it never hurts to inquire with the buyer if shrink is negotiable. If by some chance the answer is yes, a little more money can end up in the seller’s pocket book. Common questions around marketing animals include – Who are these marketers? How do I get ahold of them?. The Ministry of Agriculture along with a group of producers are putting together a workshop that will bring these individuals in so you can talk to them directly. Mark

will be the sequel to “Mary Poppins” (for which Julie Andrews won her Oscar in 1964). Emily Blunt, who starred in “Edge of Tomorrow” (with Tom Cruise), the

Office” and “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi”) have one child, Hazel Grace, and are expecting their second child later this year. Her next film, “Girl on the Train,” with Justin Theroux, Luke Evans and Allison Janney, is due Oct. 7. Disney hopes to cash in on the smashing success of Lin-Manuel Miranda, author and star of the hip-hop musical “Hamilton” (which was nominated for a record 16 Tony Awards), by costarring him with Blunt. P.L. Travers wrote seven more Mary Poppins books, any one of which this may be based on. The story is set in Depressionera London and revolves around Jane and Michael (the Banks children) and Michael’s three children. Miranda will play Jack the Lamplighter (which sounds akin to the chimney sweep that Dick Van Dyke played). Miranda’s work for Disney includes writing music for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and
the animated “Moana,” which features the voice of Dwayne Johnson. Johnson will follow “Moana” (Nov. 23), “Fast 8” (April 14) and “Baywatch” (May 19) by producing and starring in a remake of the 1975 Ron Ely film “Doc Savage: Man of Bronze,” which was not a huge success. “Deadpool,” which earned $754 million in theaters, has crushed the DVD/Blu-ray market, taking the No. 1 spot its first two weeks on sale. However, “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds didn’t do as well with “Criminal,” which opened April 15. It cost $31.5 million but earned only $32.7 million, despite
having Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones and “Wonder Woman” Gal Gadot in the cast. Reynolds’ next film is “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” with Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Selma Hayek. Also on the casualty list are “Nice Guys,” with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, which cost $50 million to make and took in only $28.5 in theaters, and the soft opening of “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” which cost $170 million and opened lower than expected at $105.3 million. It’ll be a long haul to catch the original, which made over a billion dollars. The box-office dip may have been caused by the beating allegations made against Johnny Depp by his wife, Amber Heard. Imagine saying the first week’s grosses were a disappointing $105 million? I’d cry for them, but I need to save my tears because of the drought we’re having in California!

The family button jar is a practical keepsake filled with treasures for creative play and storytelling, too. Like scraps of repurposed fabric in a quilt, each one has its own story of where it
came from. If you don’t have a designated button container, start your own stash of buttons from discarded clothing, spares you no longer need, and odds and ends from garage sales.
Before you begin the simple button projects I’ve listed below, enjoy playing a sorting game with your child. Organize buttons by style and color in a muffin tin, small zipper-style lunch bags or
small jars. STRING A SIMPLE STRETCH BRACELET Choose about 20 standard buttons with holes in their centers by color, size and shape or create a combination and set

out in a line on the table. Cut a piece of elastic for stringing jewelry about 12 inches long. Secure an office binder clip 2 inches from one end to prevent buttons from slipping off as you thread. Thread the elastic in and out of the buttonholes, letting buttons overlap slightly as you go. (If there are four holes on a button, thread through just two of them.) Check for fit on your wrist as you near the end. When there are enough buttons to your satisfaction, remove the end clip, fit the bracelet snugly to your wrist and tie the loose ends in double knots. Cut off excess elastic near the knot. GIVE A PLAIN WHITE BLOUSE PERSONALITY Remove ordinary white buttons and replace with a differentstyle button for every hole. Or switch out the white buttons for a favorite color. This is an ideal opportunity to teach an older child how to sew on buttons without your help. MAKE BUTTON “STAMPS” TO PRINT STATIONERY, NOTECARDS AND GIFT WRAP Choose buttons with 3-dimensional designs and simple patterns, such as a daisy or geometric shapes. With strong craft glue, attach the side opposite the design to a small block of wood or the end of a bottle cork. When dry, press onto an ink pad and stamp away. Note: Buttons can be a choking hazard for young children (and pets). Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide.
