fit the plant in so many ways such an excellent growth and yield, stronger and more resistant plants, and saves money from having to buy fertilizers and insecticides. Another benefit is that instead of throwing perfectly good compost material into the garbage and thus contributing to the ever increasing size of the landfill — but again, I know, it’s a lot of work. I will now skip over the benefit for the soil now and concentrate on how easy it can be made instead. Most people are accustomed to making it in a small wood box where they mix in some
PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay Do you have a compost pile in your back yard? A lot of people do not have one, as they consider this to be far more work than it’s worth. First of all, I don’t blame you but if you could do it much easier way or saw an extra benefit perhaps I could change your mind? First off, the obvious benefits: the old saying is if you take care of your soil, the soil will take care of you. This has not changed no matter what industry you are from, building the nutrient into your soil will bene-
dirt and stir with a pitch fork. A compost tumbler is much easier to use, it is a small barrel mounted sideways with a handle to tumble the contents very easily. Compost must be stirred to be activated and to move the bacteria around to different parts of the batch, and the compost tumbler makes this so easy. The purchase price ranges from $120 and up, but make sure the stand that comes with it is very sturdy as the contents can get very heavy before you empty it, which is also very easy to by simply opening a trap door. But I bet that’s not enough reason yet. What if you could heat your house or have hot water from your compost pile? A trend that is quickly
catching on is the use of small “digesters” that siphon the heat out of the compost contents. Depending on what is in the pile the temperatures even in winter can be 90-200F degrees, plenty of free heat from waste material. The systems can start around $800 depending on complexity, and while this may not be practical for many, they are excellent for larger operations that can harness that heat to keep buildings and more quite warm for relatively so little. Still not convinced? How about making power from composted material? There are many ways this is being done now, either by extracting the
gases made inside the composted materials, or burning the material after the heat has been extracted. I will post some videos on our Facebook page. We continue to think about the coming winter and how it can be more easily managed, but in the mean-
time enjoy your summer! For more info, check out our Facebook page at Problem Solved Alternative or email me at service@myps247. com Benjamin Galay is the owner of Problem Solved Inc., and the owner of Grace Gardens Greenhouses in Stenen.

GRILLED FLANK STEAK WITH GARDEN SALAD Simple grilled steak and a salad of sweet corn and juicy tomatoes make an easy and delicious summer meal. •2 teaspoons hot paprika •2 teaspoons dried tarragon •1 teaspoon salt •1/2 teaspoon pepper •2 pounds flank steak •Cooking spray •1/4 cup olive oil •2 tablespoons lemon juice •1/4 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon pepper •3 ears corn •12 ounces cherry tomatoes •1/2 cup torn basil leaves •1/2 cup crumbled garlic-herb cheese Prepare grill for covered direct grilling on high. Meanwhile, in small bowl, mix hot paprika, dried tarragon, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper; rub all over flank steak. Spray each side of steak with cooking spray. Grill steak, covered, 10 to 12 minutes for medium (140 F) or until desired doneness, turning over once.
While steak cooks, whisk olive oil, lemon juice and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper in large bowl. Cut kernels off ears of corn; stir into dressing with cherry tomatoes and basil leaves. Top steak with crumbled garlic-herb cheese. Serve with tomato-corn salad. Serves 4. BLUEBERRY CRISP You can put this together really fast. Try it warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. •1/3 cup granulated sugar •2 tablespoons cornstarch •3 pints blueberries (about 7-1/2 cups) •1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice •3/4 cup old-fashioned or quick-cooking oats •1/2 cup packed brown sugar •1/3 cup all-purpose flour •1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon •4 tablespoons cold butter or margarine, cut up Preheat oven to 375 F. In large bowl, stir granulated sugar and cornstarch until blended. Add blueberries and lemon juice; toss to coat.
Pour blueberry mixture into shallow 2-1/2-quart glass or ceramic baking dish; spread evenly. In same bowl, combine oats, brown sugar, flour and cinnamon. With fingertips, work in butter until coarse crumbs form. Press crumb mixture together and sprinkle on top of blueberry mixture. Bake crisp 35 to 40 minutes or until top is browned and fruit is bubbling at edge. Cool on wire rack 1 hour to serve warm, or cool completely to serve later. Makes 8 servings. • Each serving: About 270 calories, 3g protein, 52g carbohydrate, 7g total fat (4g saturated), 5g fiber, 16mg cholesterol, 75mg sodium. The ABCs of education savings choices With summer here and school over, it might seem odd to be thinking about saving for your child’s education. But when it comes to the law of compound interest, the sooner you start the better. And now there are more options available than ever before. As with any investment, it’s important to understand their growth potential, how they’re taxed and whether they’re flexible. Two options to consider are RESPs and In-trusts. Option One: The RESP An RESP is an education savings plan that parents, grand-parents or friends can open on behalf of a child (beneficiary) to help pay for their post-secondary education. The life-time deposit limit is $50,000. The beneficiary can access the funds when he has enrolled in a full-time, qualified post-secondary educational program. If the beneficiary changes his mind, a new beneficiary under the age of 21 may be named. In terms of taxes, RESPs are tax-deferred not taxdeductible. Withdrawals would be considered income for the beneficiary. But as a student, he may not be required to pay any tax since he would be in a low- or no-income bracket.
Laurie Renton Justine Lutz Financial Advisors LR Future Insurance and Investments #7 Broadway Street W. Yorkton, SK S3N 0L3 Phone: 306.783.7737
Option Two: In-trusts In-trusts are special accounts that are opened by a benefactor like a parent, grand-parent, another family member or friend on behalf of a minor. This person is then responsible managing the account and making deposits on behalf of the child. Unlike the RESP, there is no limit as to how much can be deposited. When the child becomes of age, they can use the funds as they like. In terms of tax treatment, in-trusts are not tax deductible nor tax deferred. All investment income related to the account would need to be declared by the benefactor. The tax obligation would be passed to the child if the deposit source comes from the child’s part-time job or the Child Tax Benefit. “Mutual funds distributed through Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. for insurance products, Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. acts as a National Life Insurance Brokerage Agency.”

Crops developing normally in province Livestock producers continue with haying operations throughout the province, although frequent rain and high humidity have slowed progress. Twenty-two per cent of the hay crop has been cut and 28 per cent is baled or put into silage. The five year average (20112015) for hay progress is 23 per cent cut and 40 per cent baled or put into
silage. Crops across the province are developing normally, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Fifty-three per cent of fall cereals, 69 per cent of oilseeds, 67 per cent of spring cereals and 65 per cent of pulses are at their normal developmental stages for this time of year. Average dryland hay
yields for the province are 1.6 tons per acre for alfalfa; 1.5 tons per acre for alfalfa/bromegrass; 1.3 tons per acre for other tame hay; and 2.2 tons per acre for greenfeed. Dryland hay yields are slightly above the five- and 10-year averages of 1.4 tons per acre overall. Irrigated hay is estimated at 2.2 tons per acre for alfalfa and 2.3 tons per acre for alfalfa/
bromegrass. Hay quality is rated as nine per cent excellent, 62 per cent good, 26 per cent fair and three per cent poor. Despite the rain and humidity slowing down cutting and baling, the standing hay crop remains in good condition due to favourable growing conditions. Significant amounts of rain fell on much of the province throughout the
week. Precipitation varies from trace amounts to 98 mm. Heavy rain over the past few weeks has caused crops to lodge, and they remain under flooding stress in some areas. Lentils and peas in many areas of the province are suffering from too much moisture. Diseases and hail have also caused crop damage. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated
as 22 per cent surplus, 76 per cent adequate and two per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 11 per cent surplus, 86 per cent adequate and three per cent short. Farmers are busy with haying operations and controlling diseases and insects as necessary. Follow the 2016 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture.
Francophone Report on seniors received The Advisory Committee on Francophone Affairs’ report on Francophone Seniors has been received by Provincial Secretary Nadine Wilson. “I’d like to thank the Advisory Committee for this report on the issue of seniors in Saskatchewan,” Wilson said. “I look forward to reviewing the report’s recommendations.
Saskatchewan’s francophone communities have played no small part in the development of our great province and, within those communities, it is often the seniors who inspire a deep sense of connection and belonging.” The recommendations in the report are to help guide in the delivery and access of French-language health care services to francophone seniors in
our province. The recommendations look to improve well-being and mental health. They also include initiatives that support “aging in place,” the concept of more seniors choosing to stay in their communities, surrounded by familiar places. The Francophone Affairs Advisory Committee developed its report follow-
ing consultation with the Ministry of Health and various community organizations. The committee was created in 2009 to advise the Provincial Secretary on the implementation of the provincial government’s French-language services policy. For more information on the committee’s work and the full report, visit www.saskatchewan.ca/fab.
Increase in rabies cases in Saskatchewan Saskatchewan Agriculture is reminding residents that rabies is present across much of the province, after several cases of rabies in domestic animals were detected over the last few months.
The province has confirmed 18 cases from January 1, 2016 to July 13, 2016, versus nine cases in the same time period in 2015 and seven in 2014. This includes seven cases in June and three cases to date in July. Four cases involving domestic animals have been confirmed, involving a cow, a cat, a baby lamb and a baby goat. Also confirmed were cases in skunks (eight) and bats (six). The best defence against rabies is vaccination. All cats, dogs, ferrets and certain livestock should be vaccinated; the public is encouraged to contact their veterinar-
ian for more information and to set up vaccination appointments for their pets and livestock. It’s also important that the public watch for signs of rabies in domestic animals and wildlife. These signs include: Domestic animals may become depressed and
try to hide in isolated places; Wild animals may lose their fear of humans and appear unusually friendly; Wild animals that usually come out at night may be out during the day; Animals may have
paralysis which commonly affects the face or neck often seen as difficulty swallowing; Animals may become excited or aggressive;
and Animals may attack objects, people or other animals. The public should be aware of the risk
of rabies in their area. Saskatchewan Agriculture has maps that identify at-risk areas at www.saskatchewan.ca/ rabies.

passed from mother to child. There has never been a reported case where a person was infected through casual contact, such as sharing eating utensils or using the same bathroom. HIV has never been reported as being transmitted through saliva, tears or sweat. It isn’t transmitted by insects, either. However, it’s not recommended to share razors or toothbrushes, since these can be contaminated by blood. The progression of disease caused by HIV is highly variable. There often is a fever and flulike symptoms at the time of first infection. Most people will test positive by the usual blood test within a few months
of becoming infected. People with HIV often remain without symptoms for years; however, the virus continues to replicate and destroy CD4 cells, a key regulator of the immune system, during this time. The term “AIDS” is reserved for advanced HIV infection with a specific, defining illness, such as Pneumocystis pneumonia; or a CD4 count below 200 (normal is around 1,000). As far as prognosis goes, the most important single factor is whether a person with HIV infection is prescribed (and properly takes!) appropriate treatment. There certainly are many people who have had HIV for over 20 years without
getting AIDS. With very advanced HIV infection, the immune system is unable to fight off infections, but also, the body cannot fight off cancer. Since people with HIV can live so long, heart disease and any other cause is possible. Very often, people die with, not from, their HIV. For people living with HIV and who haven’t told their family, I recommend doing so. I know it’s complex, and it may not be right for everybody, but it will help relieve stress for most. DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has Meniere’s disease. We cannot find anyone who can help him. Is there any medication for this? — L.M.
ANSWER: Meniere’s disease causes episodes of vertigo, tinnitus and eventually hearing loss. It is caused by swelling in the organ of balance in the inner ear, but the reason for the swelling isn’t clear. Before being seen by a doctor, your husband can try to identify triggers for the attacks. Common triggers include a high-salt diet, tobacco, alcohol and stress. A low-salt diet can dramatically reduce episodes. ENT doctors are usually expert in treating Meniere’s disease. A diuretic such as hydrochlorothiazide often is used if diet alone doesn’t help. The booklet on vertigo explains this disruptive
condition in detail and outlines its treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 801W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Rain shortens North Ridge event stay home and dry.” Trevor Lyons, Tournament Director with the Parkland Association of Disc Golf of which the North Ridge Course is a part, said one thing you can’t plan for is the weather. “Everyone wants sunny weather for summer events, but that isn’t going to happen. This time we got the rain. It happens, although this was a definite soaker. The players came in off the front nine looking rather bedraggled and dripping. I know I was one of them.” With players drenched, the sky still filled with grey-hued clouds, and enough of a breeze to be chilling on the more open back-nine, the event was terminated after nine. “Some players were ready to forge forward,” said McKay. “But there

The North Ridge Disc Golf Daredevil Challenge Tournament was held Saturday (July 23) in Birtle, MB. It was the inaugural event at the course installed earlier this year on the hills of the Birdtail River Valley overlooking the town below. The weather however, was not particularly accommodating to the event, having rained prior and through tournament registration, and then coming down steady on the brave players who took to the course shortly after 11 a.m. local time. “It was quite disappointing. I can’t deny that. But it is one thing we couldn’t plan for,” said Brenda McKay, the driving force behind the course. “We know we lost some players who likely looked at the weather forecast and decided to

Crossbreeding - Revisiting an old concept Naomi Paley, BSA, PAg Regional Livestock Specialist, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, Yorkton
Crossbreeding of beef cattle is not a new concept. In fact, the commercial cattle industry in North America began crossbreeding in the late 1700’s. Even at that early stage in the game, before the advent of modern genetics, producers recognized the benefits of cross breeding or heterosis. Heterosis is the concept that the offspring of a cross between two breeds will be better than the average of the two parents. For example, if the average value for weaning weight of Breed 1 is 500 lbs. and the average value for Breed 2 is 600 lbs. the average of the two would be 550 lbs. However, due to heterosis the resulting calf crop after mating these two breeds will average 580 lbs. So heterosis
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Ridge and Brooke came to an understanding of how they could best help the ones they loved and themselves in the process. Brooke chose her sister over her lover when it came to Katie’s struggle with Bill over their son. Ridge acknowledged Thomas and Caroline’s feelings. Zende and Nicole took their relationship to the next level. Katie found Bill and Brooke together in the office. Steffy persuaded Eric to go to Monte Carlo to announce that he was Forrester’s new CEO. Wyatt demanded to know why Quinn snuck into Forrester’s headquarters. On the Spencer jet, Liam opened up to Eric about his feelings for Steffy, Wyatt and Quinn. Brooke demanded that Bill do what Katie asked. Wait to See: A jilted lover vents to an unlikely source about the cause of his anger. for weaning weight is 30 lbs. or 5.5%. This extra 5.5% of weaning weight is free because you did nothing more than use a different breed. From an economic standpoint, the return on investment is astounding! The reasons for crossbreeding can be different for every operation. Reasons to use it in your herd may be: 1. To take advantage of heterosis 2. To use average breed effects 3. To design a cow herd 4. To target markets 5. Create breeding plan for a herd Tables 1 shows that heterosis is not consistent from one breed to another. Breeds that are more genetically different (Brahman and Hereford) will show more heterosis than breeds that are more genetically alike (Simmental and Limousin). The greater the difference in breeds, the greater the effect. Maximum heterosis is

realized in the first cross of distinctly different parents. It is important to note that just because you mate cattle of different breeds does not mean there will be a large heterotic or average breed effect. Selection of the parents for their potential genetic contribution to a trait (called the additive genetic effect) will be more important than heterosis or breed effects. The use of EPDs (estimated progeny difference) and other selection tools within a breed should not be ignored for the sake of heterosis. Heterosis will not improve poor cattle. Adapted from Cundiff et al., 1994 Crossbreeding will improve more lowly heritVegas. Hope’s condition worsened as she and Rafe remained trapped. Aiden stood by his innocence. Crossbreeding is an important part of the beef industry due to the variation in environments and markets across our country. It should be accomplished with specific goals in mind and with a long-term commitment. Adapted from Comerford et al, Penn State Extension.

Fresh from the Midwest, ballerina Ruby (played by real-life dancer Keenan Kampa) has a lot to learn and a lot to prove upon landing in NYC and enrolling at a fictional conservatory. Opposite her is a melancholic Brit subway-violinist Johnny (Nicholas Galitzine), who sits on the edge of deportation. Can they find affection and pull off the big performance show thing?! (They do, and it’s not bad.)

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Keanu” (R) — Twoheaded comedy monster Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele take their killer tag-team timing into their first featurelength film. Rell (Peel) is a softy suburban guy heartbroken after breaking up with his girlfriend, and the new owner of an impossibly adorable kitten he names Keanu. Clarence (Key) is Rell’s un-tough friend who’s in a loving marriage, but has seemingly lost all
of hardened (but very catfriendly) thugs. Key and Peele (of the show, “Key & Peele”) have honed their moves through years of sketch comedy, and their stillrunning Comedy Central show puts out great material on a regular basis. The movie works best when it’s not trying to be a movie. Absurdity hijacks the gangland plotting, and two funny guys handle it like seasoned getaway drivers. “The Lobster” (R) — Love is weird and difficult at times. But it’s even weirder in the world where David (Colin Farrell) was just dumped by his wife. In this nearfuture world, you have to

By Cindy Elavsky Q: I miss seeing Jennifer Esposito on “Blue Bloods.” Can you tell me if she has any more projects in the pipeline? — Daryl G., via email A: Jennifer is returning to CBS, but not to “Blue Bloods.” She’s been cast as a series regular for the 14th season of “NCIS,” where she’ll play Special Agent Alex Quinn, an instructor at
Jennifer Esposito the LEO training center whom Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) lures back into the field as part of his team. Executive producer Gary Glasberg is thrilled to have Jennifer
on board, saying: “We couldn’t be happier. ... She embodies everything that we hoped for in the character of Quinn, and we can’t wait to have her come be a part of our team.” Her first airdate will be the season premiere, which is Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. ET. Q: I was so bummed to read in your column that the “Coach” revival was canceled. Does that happen a lot, shows getting the go-ahead and then having it snatched away? — Lilly G., Dearborn, Michigan A: It happens more often than you might think. As you mentioned,
“Coach” was canceled by NBC, even though it had been greenlighted and the pilot episode filmed. Fox’s “Famous” was canceled before shooting started. HBO rescinded its series order for “Brothers in Atlanta”; it also canceled its miniseries project “Codes of Conduct” before air. FXX canceled “Cassius and Clay” before any episodes aired. Spike’s “Harvest” was canceled prior to production, as was Yahoo’s “The Pursuit.” And finally, HBO’s “Utopia” was canceled in preproduction. Hollywood can be a fickle fellow.
Advice for a healthy pregnancy (NC) — Eating well is essential for a healthy pregnancy for both you and your child. However, defining what is healthy and knowing what nutrients and how much of each to work into your diet can be difficult. Here are expert tips from Sue Mah, a registered dietitian, on how to add four important nutrients into your diet: • Folate is a B-vitamin needed to build red blood cells, and supports the development of your baby’s brain and spinal cord. Choose foods rich in folate like edamame beans, spinach, avocado, enriched pasta, peanuts, sunflower seeds and beans. Sue also recom-
mends introducing a cup of Florida Orange Juice to your daily diet for a delicious source of folate, plus potassium and vitamin C, with no added sugar. • Calcium is essential for your baby’s strong bones and teeth. Enjoy a variety of calcium-rich foods like milk, fortified soy beverage, yogurt, cheese, almonds, collards, tofu (with calcium sulphate), and canned salmon with bones. • Iron is needed in higher amounts during your pregnancy to make red blood cells that will carry oxygen to you and your growing baby. Some of the best choices for iron are lean meat,
Anniversary
poultry, fish, dried peas, beans, dark green veggies, nuts, seeds, eggs and iron-enriched breads, pasta or breakfast cereals. • Omega-3 fats are found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, trout, char and sardines and are important for your baby’s eye and brain development. Walnuts, ground flax and chia seeds, canola oil, and eggs are also great sources of omega-3 fats. Foods that should be avoided or limited during pregnancy include: • Fish that are high in mercury like swordfish, marlin, escolar, orange roughy and white/albacore tuna (canned light

or skipjack tuna are okay). If you enjoy these fish, limit yourself to two servings a month. • Caffeine should be limited to 300 mg of caffeine per day or about two small cups of coffee. • Herbs and herbal teas can be risky, so always check with your health care professional or dietitian. Sue recommends taking a prenatal multivitamin that contains 0.4 mg folic acid, 16-20 mg iron and vitamin B12. Every pregnancy is different, so talk to your health care provider about the prenatal vitamin that’s best for you.
Q: Can you give me any scoop on the new season of “American Horror Story”? — Benny T., via email A: FX recently revealed that “AHS” would return for its sixth season of 10 episodes on Sept. 14 at 10 p.m. ET. As of this writing, these are the cast members who have confirmed that they’ll be returning: Evan Peters, Denis O’Hare, Matt Bomer, Angela Bassett, Leslie Jordan, Cheyenne Jackson and Lady Gaga. As I previously reported, Jessica Lange will not return for the new season. Q: I’ve been putting off watching the sixth season of “Community” because I just don’t want it to end. Do the rumors I am hearing about a possible movie have any chance
of being true? — Hyla P. in North Carolina A: If creator Dan Harmon has his way, there will be a “Community” movie. He recently told Larry King that “Community” would make a great movie, cryptically adding, “It will happen.” However, he isn’t sure when his busy cast could come together, saying: “If I pull out a typewriter right now and write a ‘Community’ movie just for my own heart and mind, then I have to go through the heartbreak and agony of finding out which of the people are going to show up to make it.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com.

The playful, less-structured days of summer signal a change in family schedules, especially when it comes to eating habits. Instead of three structured meals, kids seem to graze all day long and hang around an open refrigerator door. Keep ahead of the game when hunger strikes. Here are some tasty and healthy ideas for the little snackers in your household:

NATURE’S BASICS Stick to the basics, and take advantage of “pick your own” berries, vine-ripe melons at fruit stands, fresh-squeezed juices and selected veggies from the local farmer’s market or your own backyard garden patch. A basket of peaches here and a bowl of nuts
INFUSED WATER Keep kids hydrated. To add pizzazz to a glass of water, make a citrus fruit infusion in a big pitcher in the morning and leave it in the refrigerator or on the counter throughout the day. Simply toss thin slices of lemon, lime or grapefruit in the water for an easy, thirst-quenching drink. Get creative and

To serve, remove foil and peel away the cup or pop it out of the cup. Don’t sweat the drips if you’re serving them on a hot day. Just push the stick through paper muffin cups that will catch the drips to keep small hands sticky-free. SERVING HELPERS When serving cold beverages and snacks, use a muffin tin to carry and set food and drinks in. The muffin tin stabilizes the drinks, preventing spills when kids carry them. the feet seven times more than one-inch heels and heels put additional stress on knees, possibly increasing women’s risk for osteoarthritis. Though heels may be fashionable, the risk of developing joint pain is not worth making the fashion statement. • Get some green in your diet. A healthy diet pays numerous dividends, but many may not know that a healthy diet can help prevent joint pain. Green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale and parsley are high in calcium and can reduce age-related bone loss while also slowing cartilage destruction. • Shed those extra pounds. If you start including more healthy vegetables in your diet, you might just start to lose a little weight as well. Such weight loss also can help your joints, as the AF notes that every extra pound a person gains puts four times the stress on his or her knees. The AF also notes that research has shown that losing as little as 11 pounds can reduce a person’s risk of osteoarthritis of the knee by 50 percent. • Hit the pool. Swimming is a great fullbody workout and can be especially helpful to the joints. The buoyancy of water supports the body’s weight, reducing stress on the joints and minimizing pain as a result. If possible, swimmers already experiencing pain should swim in heated pools, which can help relieve pain. While you can still benefit from swimming in pools with colder temperatures, cold water may not soothe the joints like warm water can. • Take breaks at work. Many people develop joint pain thanks to their jobs. If you spend all day sitting at a desk or standing on your feet, try to find a greater balance between the two. Joints can grow stiff from sitting all day, while standing throughout your work day can stress the joints. Take a short break every 30 minutes to stand up and walk around if you spend most of your day at a desk. If you stand a lot at your job, stop to sit down for a few minutes once every half hour. Joint pain and aging do not have to go hand in hand. More information about joint paint is available at www.arthritis.org.

Always practice summer sun safety When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer
Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help
summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions. • Know the risks of UV exposure. Sunlight is needed to engage vitamin D production in the body, but too much sun exposure can do more harm than good. Ultraviolet, or UV, rays from the sun and other sources, such as tanning beds, are the primary cause of skin cancer. Exposure also can lead to sunburns, premature aging/wrin-
kling and eye damage. • Use only broadspectrum SPF sunscreen. Look for a sunblock product that boasts an SPF of at least 30. The FDA requires any sunscreen with an SPF below 15 to carry a warning that it only protects against sunburn, not skin cancer or skin aging. Find a sunscreen that works against UVA and UVB rays as well. UVA rays are mostly responsible for contributing to skin
Add fresh flavor to grilled chicken Backyard barbecues provide the perfect opportunity for grillmasters to experiment with their favorite foods. Those who want to give grilled chicken a tasty twist can whip up this recipe for “Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts” from Eric Treuille and Birgit Erath’s “Grilling” (DK Publishing). CITRUS RECADO CHICKEN BREASTS Serves 4 •2 garlic cloves, crushed •1 teaspoon chili powder •1⁄2 teaspoon dried oregano •1⁄2 teaspoon dried thyme •1⁄2 teaspoon ground cumin •1⁄2 teaspoon ground coriander •1⁄2 teaspoon black pepper •1⁄4 teaspoon ground
utes, turning once. Grill according to instructions below. Sprinkle with salt. Serve hot with avocado mango salsa if you prefer.
cinnamon •1 tablespoon dark brown sugar •2 tablespoons canola oil •2 tablespoons fresh lime juice •1⁄4 cup orange juice •4 boneless chicken breast halves, slashed •Salt •1 recipe Avocado Mango Salsa (optional) Combine garlic, chili powder, oregano, thyme, cumin, coriander, pepper, cinnamon, sugar, oil, lime juice, and orange juice. Add chicken and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for 30 min-
Outdoor grill: Grill skin-side down over medium-hot coals until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue grilling until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes. Indoor grill: Preheat broiler. Broil skin-side up until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue cooking until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes. To slash the chicken breasts: With a sharp knife, cut 3 parallel slashes through the skin, about 1⁄4-inch deep. Marinate chicken up to 2 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate, turning several times in marinade.
AVOCADO MANGO SALSA Makes 1-2⁄3 cups •1 mango, finely diced •1 avocado, peeled, halved, pitted, and finely diced •1⁄2 red onion, finely chopped •1 red chile, seeded and finely chopped •1 tablespoon fresh lime juice •1 tablespoon red wine vinegar •2 tablespoons olive oil •2 tablespoons finely chopped mint leaves •Salt •Tabasco® Combine mango, avocado, onion, chile, lime juice, vinegar, oil, and mint. Add salt and Tabasco® to taste. Cover and let stand for 30 minutes at room temperature to allow flavors to blend. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
cancer and premature aging. Reapply frequently, especially when swimming or engaging in activities that cause sweating. • Know the difference between water-resistant and waterproof sunscreens. Manufacturers are no longer allowed to claim that their sunscreens are waterproof or sweatproof. A sunscreen may be able to repel water for a short time, but it should be reapplied when leaving the water or when spending long stretches in the water. • Cover up whenever
possible. It may seem counterintuitive in hot weather, but covering up can be beneficial to the skin and actually keep a person cooler. Wear wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeve tops and light-colored pants. Some materials are made with reflective properties, while others actually boast their own SPF. Summer fun does not need to be threatened by overexposure to the sun. By exercising caution, everyone can spend quality time in the great outdoors all summer long.
