Students learn and pray during camp week It has been said that knowledge gained through experience is superior to “bookish” knowledge. Yorkton Grade 7 Catholic school students were joined by Melville’s St. Henry’s Sr. School this year for the 44th Annual AMPO camping trip at St. Michael’s Bible Camp at Lake Madge. During the week-long outing, students learn canoeing, fire-building, archery, hiking, first aid and more. Of course, being a Catholic Schools endeavour, there is a religious element to it as well. “They are immersed in God’s creation and develop a sincere appreciation for their Catholic faith,” said Gary Forgeron, a Grade 7 teacher from St. Michael’s School. The program actually started to fulfill physical education requirements at a time when many

Catholic schools did not have gymnasiums. It now stands on its own, run by volunteers and supported financially by area organizations and businesses. “AMPO has blossomed into an incredible program, rich with tradition and experience,” Forgeron said. “We would like to thank all those that helped to shape the lives of our students. “A special thanks to those businesses and organizations that have donated either money or equipment to our program this year, especially: Christ the Teacher Catholic School Division, Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood, Knights of Columbus #2031, Knights of Columbus #5182, Catholic Women’s League, Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League, SOEEA, SaskLotteries, Discovery Motorsports and St Michael’s Camp.”

Campers hold an impromptu dance party during the annual Grade 7 camping trip at St. Michael’s Bible Camp at Madge Lake.

Seeding complete for ‘16 Seeding in Saskatchewan is expected to be completed this week, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. While there are few fields of oats and flax as well as some greenfeed and silage being seeded at this time, 99.5 per cent of the crop is in the ground. The five year (2011-2015) average for this time of year is 94 per cent seeded. Topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as four per cent surplus, 85 per cent adequate, nine per cent short and two per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as two per cent surplus, 80 per cent adequate, 14 per cent short and four per cent very short. There are both shortages and surpluses of topsoil moisture

in the province. In crop districts 1A and 2B, 23 per cent of cropland has surplus topsoil moisture; in Crop District 9B, 31 per cent of cropland is short topsoil moisture. Another warm week has resulted in excellent crop growth. Overall across the province, 60 per cent of fall cereals, 75 per cent of spring cereals and 73 per cent of oilseeds are at their normal stages of development for this time of year. The majority of the crops are in excellent-to-good condition. Rainfall was recorded throughout most of the province, with the southeastern, southwestern and east-central regions recording the greatest amounts. Areas in the drier northwest also received much-needed rain this week.

Windy conditions have hampered weed control operations in many areas of the province. Cutworms and disease are causing crop damage in some areas.

Producers are busy controlling weeds and insects and getting prepared for haying. Follow the 2016 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture.

PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay Cutting firewood is a very peaceful and enjoyable chore for me. Seeing those big blocks turn into small burnable pieces is very satisfying and I am not poetic enough to describe it further. It is a basic need to have the light and warmth and comfort of a fire. Every axe stroke is like swinging a sword in battle to defend my family against a cold winter, cold food, and cold heart… then I remember that I have over 40 cord to cut for my house, shop, and greenhouse, then its not such an enjoyable chore. I need to cut a lot but maybe you do not, yet perhaps you still wish it was easier. There are many ways to acquire wood, but all require some equipment, truck, chainsaw and time. The alternative is buying the wood but if cost saving heat is your goal then buying a truck load seems expensive. After you have sourced some wood begins the real chore. Most people who would want to use firewood to heat their home during the winter in a fireplace or furnace will need about 3-5 “cords” or seasoned (dried) firewood. In case you are unfamiliar with what a cord is: a stack of neatly, tightly stacked wood that has the dimensions bigger than a pile measuring 8 feet long by 4 feet wide by 4 feet high. Most pickup trucks can handle about half of a cord. Cutting the wood in the winter is the easiest as the water inside the wood is frozen and has contributed to the ease of splitting. If you have been considering installing a fireplace your insurance will increase between 10-20% but gives you a way to heat your home no matter what, or boil water, or even cook food. Having enough wood for open fires in your backyard or up to enough firewood for an entire winter requires: time, a chainsaw, an axe or logsplitter. We sell an axe that makes splitting so easy, and regular hydraulic logsplitters,

or even Kinetic Splitters that can split a block in less than 2 seconds to help speed up your chore progress. But if you have needs like my own or want to be able to cut much more for others to have, then a firewood proces-

sor is the order of the day. These machines can do many chores in a short amount of time. These machines allow you to feed very long logs into the machine, it has its own saw, splitter and conveyor all towable behind a truck

or quad and can help you cut and split about a cord per hour. Cutting the wood soon enough so that it can dry is essential, be sure to cover the pile with a clear plastic to keep it dry and increase the heat in the sun.

We are having a demo day with some of our Firewood Processing Equipment in Stenen on June 25th, come see us between 12-4pm. Come help us make a big pile of “cut and split” in a short time. Hope to see you there!

care infrastructure, is a priority for our government,” Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “The new Kelvington and Area Hospital is providing high quality acute and primary care services in a new, modern environment.” “It is rewarding to see the completion of the first phase of this integrated facility, which will deliver a range of health care services all

under one roof when it’s completed next year,” Kelvington-Wadena MLA Hugh Nerlien said. Since 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested more than $200 million toward the replacement of 13 long-term care facilities across the province. Kelvington’s long-term care facility was also approved for expansion to an integrated facility that includes a new hos-

pital and renovations to the existing long-term care facility, Kelvindell Lodge. Once completed, the integrated facility will be equipped with 45 long-term care beds, seven acute care beds, seven multi-purpose clinic rooms and a family room. “As a Regional Health Authority, we are thrilled to see how excited our staff and the people of Kelvington are to have one phase of this

facility open,” Kelsey Trail Regional Health Authority Board Chair Rennie Harper said. “We are looking forward with anticipation to the next phase of renovations, which are well underway. We are all looking forward to this visionary integrated health facility.” The next phase of the project, renovations to the east wing and the kitchen of Kelvindell Lodge, is currently

underway and on track to be completed this fall. The final phase of renovations, which includes the southeast wing of the long-term care facility, is expected to be complete by spring 2017. The Government of Saskatchewan will contribute $12 million to the $15 million project, which represents 80 per cent of the total shareable costs. Local contributions will cover the remaining 20 per cent.

New recreation option in Stockholm Stockholm has long been known for its excellent ball diamond facilities. The area will soon also be known as home to another sport — disc golf. “Our Council had a presentation on disc golf late last fall, and we like that it was an outdoor sport/recreation that was something all ages could participate in,” said Mayor Fran Herperger. “We turned over the idea to the Ball Diamond Committee, and they were interested too.” Ron Banga said a course was a good fit. “We have a great area we are already maintaining, but it doesn’t get used for ball for as long a season as it could,” he said. “When the idea of incorporating a disc golf course in the same area, we thought it was great as it gives our community another recreation opportunity, one that should be available from spring thaw to after the early snows.”

• On July 2, 1839, Africans on the Cuban schooner Amistad rise up against their captors and seize control of the ship, which had been transporting them to a life of slavery on a sugar plantation in Cuba. Despite an international ban, Cuba continued to transport captive Africans until the 1860s. • On June 28, 1862, Confederates posing as paying passengers make a daring capture

This spring Calvin Daniels, who made the initial presentation last fall to Stockholm Council, returned to the community along with Trevor Lyons, one of his disc golf buddies, and they undertook design of the new course.

“It’s a great space,” said Daniels, who is also interim chair of the recently formed Parkland Association of Disc Golf (PADG). “Lots of trees to throw threw and around, which is great, and we even managed to incorporate the

of a commercial vessel on Chesapeake Bay. The conspirators planned to use the St. Nicholas to force other Yankee ships into Confederate service. • On June 30, 1900, four German boats burn at the docks in Hoboken, New Jersey, killing more than 300 people. The combination of old wood, strong winds and fuel-filled cargo sheds made the fire spread very rapidly. The fire was so large that it could be seen throughout the New York City area. • On June 27, 1940, the Germans set up twoway radio communica-

tion employing their most sophisticated coding machine, Enigma, to transmit information. The Germans considered Enigma unbreakable, but the British had broken the code as early as the German invasion of Poland. • On July 3, 1957, Nikita Khrushchev takes control in the Soviet Union by orchestrating the ouster of his opponents in the government. diamonds, which are considered out-of-bounds, so an errand toss will cost players a stroke.” For those unfamiliar with the sport, disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc specific to the sport of disc golf. The sport was formalized in the 1970’s, and shares with ‘ball golf’ the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws). Disc golf uses a frisbee-like disc engineered specifically to the sport is thrown from a tee area to a tonal target which is the ‘hole’. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive throw from the spot where the previous throw has landed. The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. Finally, the ‘putt’ hits

the tonal target, and the hole is completed. It is also hoped the course will host a tournament later this summer or fall. “A tourney series was part of the reason for creating the regional association last November,” said Lyons who is the PADG Tournament Chair. The winners at series events not only earn prizes at the individual tournaments, but will be invited to participate in a PADG ‘Champions Challenge Tournament’

Growers getting better at scouting their fields Cory Jacob, Regional Crops Specialist Watrous, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture

Growers have been getting better at getting out and scouting their fields, however it is tough to resist high speed field scouting, which is slowing down while driving past a field, not stopping

and carrying on unless something major stands out. Imagine how many acres a field scout could cover in a day if this was their method. High speed field scouting is a really inefficient method to see what is going on in each individual field. You need to make an effort to stop and take an in depth look within each field.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You feel ready to face up to a major change, although it might involve some risks. A once-dubious family member comes around and offers support and encouragement. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Move forward with your plans, despite discouraging words from those who underestimate the Bovine’s strong will. Your keen instincts will guide you well. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A misunderstanding is easily cleared up. Then go ahead and enjoy some fun and games this week. A Libra might have ideas that merit serious consideration for the future. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might feel as if you’re in an emotional pressure cooker, but the situation is about to change in your favor. Take time out for some well-earned fun. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A shift in your workplace responsibilities creates resentment among some coworkers. Deal with it before it becomes a threat to your success on the job. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Expect some surprises in what you thought was one of your typically well-planned schedules. Deal with them, and then enjoy some lighthearted entertainment. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Be careful: What appears to be a solid financial opportunity might have some hidden risks attached. A hazy personal matter needs to be cleared up. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It’s a good time to strengthen ties with family and friends. You might feel unsure about a recent workplace decision, but time will prove you did the right thing. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Just when you thought your relationship was comfortable and even predictable, your partner or spouse could spring a potentially life-changing surprise on you. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your usually generous self is overshadowed by your equally strong suspicious nature. You might be judging things too harshly. Keep an open mind. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Love and romance dominate the week. Married Aquarians enjoy domestic harmony, while singles could soon be welcoming overtures from loving Leos. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An old health problem recurs, but it is soon dealt with, leaving you eager to get back into the swing of things. A favorable travel period starts this week.

Field scouting allows you to see weed, disease, insect, and fertility issues as well as pesticide efficacy and you can stage your crop, which is killing a lot of birds with one stone. Field scouting also allows you to catch an issue at the early stages before it becomes a big problem and you are left kicking the dirt or throwing your cap as you didn’t catch the problem earlier and now it has cost you irreplaceable yield or a lot of money. Being proactive and not reactive significantly helps your bottom line. When it comes to scouting each field, you need to scout a large area of that field, just check-

ing into certain packages, which is cost effective. If you are hiring a field scout or private agronomist, you need to be confident in the person’s judgment and competency. Many field scouts and private agronomists work extremely hard to get an idea of what is going on in each field. Additionally, they are highly knowledgeable and can easily provide a recommendation to deal with an issue before it becomes a large problem. At the end of the day you should recognize that someone needs to be checking fields regularly and that accurate field scouting takes time and knowledge.

scout a larger area. If for example you are scouting a full section that is being treated as one field, then you need to cover a large area as you are getting a representation of 640 acres rather than 160 acres. You need to scout in large and multiple patterns or you could check each individual quarter in the section. If you are not willing to put in or make the time to scout, then you alternatively can hire a field scout or a private agronomist. With growers having less and less spare time, coupled with covering more acres, this is a very popular option. Some crop input retails will package field scout-

ing the headlands will not be a good indicator of the rest of the field. I recommend scouting in a large “W” or zig zag pattern, stopping and taking an in depth look and then changing your direction to eventually complete the scouting pattern. Checking a field from multiple sides is also very accurate, if accessible, you could scout from different sides of the field and work your way towards the middle. Since a lot of fields are not simply farmed as a lone quarter section, but rather half sections, full sections, two full sections, or some combination of multiple quarter sections, you need to

DEAR DR. ROACH: I usually walk 45 minutes daily for a cardio workout. However, the Florida summer heat can be brutal, so instead of walking, I swim and walk one hour in the pool. Is that as good a cardio workout as walking? — R.G. ANSWER: I think that having several different ways to exercise is a good idea, since the muscles

used will always be at least somewhat different and it can keep you from being bored when doing the same thing day after day. In your situation, I think that it makes a great deal of sense to avoid the heat by getting in the pool. The intensity of a cardiovascular workout can be measured simply by your pulse rate. A rough but commonly used guide is that moderate cardiovascular exercise is 50 percent to 70 percent of your age-predicted maximum of 220 minus your age. So for age 50, your maximum is 170, and moderate exercise is a pulse of 85 to 119. You can check your pulse at

the wrist with a clock, or wear a heart monitor. Swimming almost always is a more-intense workout than walking (race walkers certainly can get a very fast pulse rate), and walking in the pool is a good exercise for your heart and many muscles. If the pool is outdoors, as is usual in warm, sunny places, you need to wear and reapply plenty of sunscreen to protect your skin. DEAR DR. ROACH: In 1978, I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. It was on the pituitary gland and pushing on the optic nerve. I had surgery, but only half was

Do you know if it has been renewed? — Daniel F., Birmingham, Alabama A: Everyone — David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and Chris Carter — is on board for another season; however, the trick will be how to fit it into everyone’s busy

schedules. Right now, they are in negotiations with Fox to return for the 2017-18 season. Hey, we waited 10 years for the reboot, so what’s two more for another season, right? And that reminds me: It’s time for another episode of “Canceled or Renewed.” This week I’ll let you know which Fox shows won’t live to see another season: “American Idol,” “Bordertown,” “Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life,” “Famous” (canceled before it had even begun filming), “Grandfathered,” “The Grinder” (it pains me to write that this brilliant

My favorite paranormal author, Victoria Laurie, has a new book coming out July 26. It’s “A Grave Prediction,” the 14th installment in the Psychic Eye Mysteries. This go-round, Abby Cooper has a vision of four buried bodies and is in a race against time to prevent the future murders of these four people — however she has no idea who the potential victims are or when it

will happen. IMPORTANT

This does not mean that the treatment you had in 1978 was inappropriate. Treatment of a brain tumor, even a noncancerous one, is critical, because there is very little room in your head for a tumor in that position. Q: I am really enjoying this season of “Outlander.” Can you tell me if it will be back for another season? — Nina H., via email A: The fantasy, timetravel romantic drama will indeed be back for a third season — and a fourth! Starz just announced that Jamie (Sam Heughan), Clare (Caitriona Balfe) and the rest of the crew have been granted at least two more seasons to tell Diana Gabaldon’s eight-book (soon to be nine) series. Each season covers the events of one book; “Dragonfly in Amber” concludes July 9. Season three will adapt “Voyager,” and season four will tell the story of “Drums of Autumn.” Starz CEO Chris Albrecht released this statement: “‘Outlander’ is like nothing seen before on television. From its depiction of a truly powerful female lead character to the devas-

removed because of the optic nerve. The other half was shrunk with chemo and radiation. I am concerned about the long-term effects of radiation, because I had a stroke in 2012 and the doctors said this stroke might have been a link to long-term effects of radiation. But 36 years later? Can you confirm or deny that the long-term effects of radiation cause stroke? — B.R. ANSWER: I can’t tell you whether your stroke was caused by the radiation you received; however, I can confirm that high-dose radiation (from radiation therapy for your tumor, not from a diagnostic CT scan) increases

Have you ever been out in the middle of a lake in a fishing boat and there weren’t any hooks in your tackle box? Or have you ever started to sew on a button and didn’t have a needle? Looking at the steps involved in getting something done — what educators call “task analysis” — is for all ages. Thinking ahead and planning what direction to take in accomplishing a task are skills we continue to develop through-

out our lives. Teachers in lower elementary grades begin the process of helping students learn how to map out steps to complete a task. As they grow older, students benefit from these skills when they begin to write term papers, do research reports and study for exams. Breaking large tasks down into smaller, more manageable parts takes practice and patience. This skill can be taught and reinforced at home, too, whether it’s planting a vegetable garden or baking a batch of chocolate-chip cookies. Before your kids begin a craft project or chore, encourage them to ask,

“What will it take to get this done?” Here are additional questions to guide them through the process: —How much time will the project take? Discuss the time required to complete the task (including cleanup) and the time available. Will it be done before your piano lesson? —What equipment is needed? If you work in the yard, do you have garbage bags and brooms so you don’t have to run back and forth to the hardware store? For a craft project or recipe, check for ingredients and utensils on hand, such as the rightsize pan, bowl and mea-

suring cups. It’s hard to make two quarts of lemonade in a one-quart container! —Is an adult needed, and will that person be available? Many activities require extra strength or supervision, for safety reasons, when using sharp objects, a hot iron or a stove. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. people have heard of King Richard the LionHearted. He wasn’t much of a king, though; he spent only about six months in England, and he didn’t even speak English. • If you have the great good fortune to take a cruise along the length of the Danube River — Europe’s second-longest — you’ll hear seven languages spoken along the banks as you travel. • Just a couple of hours southwest of Indianapolis, you’ll find the town of Vincennes, Indiana, home to the Backyard Roller Coasters. This is where John Ivers, a blue-collar worker, decided he wanted to build a roller coaster in the backyard of his home off Highway 41 — and he didn’t let his lack of an engineering background stop him. The thrilling 10-second ride was completed in 2001, and in 2006 those with less nerve got their own, tamer coaster on the same site. The coasters are open to the public, so visitors can try out either (or both) of the rides by making an appointment. • You may be surprised to learn that an elephant is 40 to 50 years old before all of its teeth come in. • Aside from being well-known conquerors, what did Alexander the Great and Napoleon have in common? They both hated cats. Thought for the Day: “Man can be the most affectionate and altruistic of creatures, yet he’s potentially more vicious than any other. He is the only one who can be persuaded to hate millions of his own kind whom he has never seen and to kill as many as he can lay his hands on in the name of his tribe or his God.â€? — Benjamin Spock

Did you know? Sea glass are pieces of glass that have been buffed and smoothed over time thanks to the constant tumbling action of ocean water and the sandy silt. Sea glass goes by many names, from mermaid’s tears to sea pearls to beach gems. Sea glass is coveted by both amateur and professional collectors. It can be turned into many different pieces of artwork, and some designers specialize in transforming the glass into intricate jewelry. Although dumping trash in the world’s oceans, bays and lakes is never a good idea, sea glass is one representation of how nature can turn something bad into a remarkable treasure. It’s possible to find sea glass in all different shades. However, some colors are harder to find than others. Odyssey Sea Glass ranks deep purple, pink, peach, black, red, orange, and deep yellow as the rarest colors. Brown, green and frosted white sea glass are the easiest colors to find.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” (R) — As an American reporter embedded in Afghanistan, Kim Baker (Tina Fey) is set on a journey of self-discovery alongside a separate crusade to cover a war that’s losing direction and public interest. She must adapt to the culture of Kabul, and the culture-within-a-culture of Western journalists trying to make it there. Kim befriends a fellow female (Margot Robbie)

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog’s veterinarian said that I need to brush her teeth to keep them from falling out. He then tried to sell me a tube of “special” toothpaste that cost $9! Plus it smelled like canned chicken. What is the point if brushing isn’t going to freshen her

and kicks up some romance with a Scottish photojournalist (Martin Freeman) while trying to find her way without being kidnapped or blown up. Fey again teams up with writer Robert Carlock, who worked with her on TV’s “30 Rock,” but the dynamic is altered here for a more

dramatic and serious tone. The film is timely and has genuine charm, but something about the exit strategy leaves you feeling it won’t last long after the credits. “Eye in the Sky” (R) — A high-tech system of surveillance tracks a group of Kenyan terrorists outside of Nairobi. British military officers (Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman) make the decision that the targets have to be neutralized from afar before they can carry out their suicide mission. It could all be neatly accomplished by a weaponized drone, controlled by a pilot (Aaron Paul) in Nevada, until a little girl is spotted selling bread, close enough that she also could be

killed in the strike. While the military machine mulls over the ethics on separate continents, the situation continues to develop on the ground. It’s a taut, thoughtful and powerfully acted take on the changing battlefield. It’s also Alan Rickman’s last screen appearance, and he has full command of his role. “Kung Fu Panda 3” (PG) — Po (voiced by Jack Back), the bumbling bear who’s also a graceful martial arts force-ofnature, reunites with his biological father (Bryan Cranston) and meets an entire village of pandas like him. Clouds take over the sunshine, however, when an evil ox, Kai (J.K. Simmons), goes on a life-force stealing cam-

breath? Can I just buy regular toothpaste from the drugstore? Sign me — Angry in Iowa DEAR ANGRY: The No. 1 reason not to use “regular” toothpaste made for humans on a pet is because it contains flouride, which can be fatal to pets if ingested. And because your dog will swallow all toothpaste being used on her teeth, that is a problem. Why brush? Healthy teeth and gums don’t just preserve her teeth, they can prevent heart disease. So, knuckle down and buy a dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste, either from the vet

or the pet store. Or, you can even make your own baking soda- and bullionbased recipe. To brush your dog’s teeth, hold her securely and place a little bit of doggy toothpaste on the brush (you can use a cotton ball on puppies and small dogs, to start). Let her taste it, then cradle her muzzle and lift one side of her lip. Place the brush against her gums and gently sweep downward. She will lick the toothpaste away as you work, so use as much as you need. The first few tries may even be frustrating as she tries to break

away. The key is to brush regularly, at least once a week, and try different flavors. And never scold her: give lots of encouragement during the brush and a healthy treat right after. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

paign. Po has to team up with his old pals (returning voices include Dustin Hoffman, David Cross, Angelina Jolie and James Hong), defeat the bad guy and learn more lessons about working together. The gags land, the story touches, and the visual display is crisp and amazing. Dreamworks is not slacking off on this franchise. “Fastball” (NR) — Who threw the fastest fastball of all time? This documentary shows that it’s not a question for a radar gun, but one that requires a mixture of science and love of the game. Assemble the arms! A series of Hall of Famers and power play-

ers, from Hank Aaron to Derek Jeter, weigh in on the topic. Director John Hock has Kevin Costner narrate, giving it the proper gravitas. While the movie deals with the stats and numbers that analysts will dive into, it also includes the mental part of the game, and does so without losing that great-old-pastime feel. HOLLYWOOD — Warner Bros. is crying the blues because “Batman v Superman” will not make it to the $1 billion club. The film, which had lukewarm reviews, only netted a paltry $871 million (sob, boo-hoo)! It landed in the middle of the pack of 14 superhero films in the top 100, at No. 46. The top superhero film is “The Avengers” (at No. 5), and at the bottom is “Thor: The Dark World” (at No. 98). Watch your back “Batman,” because

ALMOND PANNA COTTA WITH STRAWBERRIES Sweet almond flavors this cool Italian custard, which is topped with vibrant red berries tossed in almond liqueur for an extra layer of nutty flavor. •1 package unflavored gelatin •Water •1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil •1-1/2 cups whole milk •1 cup heavy or whipping cream •1/3 cup sugar •2 tablespoons sugar •1/4 teaspoon almond extract •1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract •Salt •2 cups (1/2 pound) strawberries, hulled and thinly sliced •2 tablespoons almond-flavor liqueur such as Amaretto (optional) •3 tablespoons sliced toasted almonds In small bowl, sprinkle gelatin over 3 tablespoons cold water; set

Colt Prattes Disney’s “The Jungle Book” is breathing down your neck with $860 million. John Carpenter, who directed the original “Halloween” (which cost only $325,000 to make and grossed $70 million in 1978), is returning 38 years later to direct the 10th sequel to the fright-

aside. Lightly grease eight 4-ounce custard cups or ramekins with oil. In 2-quart saucepan, heat milk, cream, 1/3 cup sugar, almond extract, vanilla extract and 1/8 teaspoon salt on high until just bubbling around edges of pan, stirring to dissolve sugar. Remove from heat and stir in gelatin mixture until dissolved. Divide cream mixture among prepared cups. Refrigerate 4 hours or up to 24. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, stir together strawberries; liqueur, if using; and remaining 2 tablespoons sugar. Run thin-bladed knife around sides of cups; invert each cup onto small serving plate. Top with strawberries; garnish with almonds. Serves 8. Tip: If you don’t have 4-ounce ramekins or custard cups, you can use silicone baking cups or line a muffin pan with foil ones. • Each serving: About 210 calories, 14g total fat

night franchise. Along the way, the original and nine sequels have grossed $366,893,444. Sure, it’s not in the $1 billion club, but remember, these films only cost between $325,000 and $17 million to make. Carpenter promises, “I’m going to make the 10th sequel the scariest of them all.” “Godfather” franchise producer/director Francis Ford Coppola soon will give fans something they’ve always wanted. He’s publishing a 720-page book that will contain the original script, with his handwrit-

ten notes and thoughts that shows the process of moviemaking, illustrated with never-before-seen photos. The deluxe edition, in a replica of the original three-ring binder and in a special box, will sell for $250, while the regular edition be $50. It goes on sale Nov. 15, just in time for holiday gift-giving. ABC is taking a big gamble on a total unknown to play the iconic Patrick Swayze role of Johnny Castle in the upcoming threehour remake of “Dirty Dancing.” The original 1987 film cost $6 million

to produce and earned $214 million in theaters. Colt Prattes has no acting credits and was part of “Pink: The Truth About Love Tour — Live From Melbourne,” the 2014 MTV Video Awards and “The 40th Anniversary American Music Awards.” ABC is banking on his good looks and hot body. It won’t be live like “Grease” or the upcoming “Hairspray,” but it will have Oscar-nominee Abigail Breslin as “Baby,” the role played by Jennifer Grey, along with Nicole Scherzinger, Debra Messing and Jennifer Lopez’s boy toy,

Beau Casper Smart. Gus Van Zant, who is responsible for those silent Matthew McConaughey Buick commercials, is set to direct the first two hours of “When We Rise,” a seven-part mini-series about the rise of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) movement, which will star Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell and David Hyde Pierce. Hmmm, Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O’Donnell together again ... that alone will be worth “The View”-ing.
