Health Board wants services in Preeceville By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The Sunrise Health Region had announced effective June 1, acute care and emergency room services would be suspended at the Preeceville & District Health Centre.

Suann Laurent, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Sunrise Health Region told the regular monthly meeting of the Board of Directors last Wednesday the decision was made because there was a lack of physicians to cover the services.

The region has stated it is a temporary change which will be in effect until predictable, consistent and sustainable on-call coverage is secured. “We’re trying to turn this around as quickly as we can,” said Laurent. The situation is “dif-

ficult for the community and everyone involved,” she added. Board interim chair Don Rae said “the good thing is it slated to be just temporary … everyone is working to make it happen.” Preeceville currently has one physician and a

nurse practitioner who will continue to provide clinic appointments at the primary health care clinic which is located in the Preeceville & District Health Centre. “The situation is being monitored on a go forward basis,” said Laurent,

In a release, the region states Preeceville continues to have aroundthe-clock emergency services provided by ambulance and paramedics and that the centre is not closing nor will there be any job losses as a result of this.

Scotty T. Rex official provincial fossil Citizens across the province have had their say and Scotty, the Tyrannosaurus rex, will be the next provincial emblem. Scotty is a 65 million year-old T. rex skeleton - the first found in Saskatchewan. Scotty was discovered on August 16, 1991, when then high school teacher Robert Gebhardt from Eastend joined Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) palaeontologists on an expedition. He discovered the base of a tooth and a vertebra from

the tail, both suggesting that they belonged to a T. rex. In June 1994, RSM palaeontologists began excavating the T. rex. More than 6,000 people visited the excavation site that year. “I would like to thank the public who took interest and participated in this campaign, along with the RSM who facilitated the selection of the next provincial emblem,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Mark Docherty said. “Scotty the T. rex will make a wonderful

provincial emblem. No other province or state has a T. rex as an official emblem; Saskatchewan is the first and only.” The process of selecting a provincial fossil was led by the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport through the RSM. Since November 2015, the public have been able to cast paper ballots at the Provincial Fossil Campaign 2016 exhibit at the RSM in Regina, and in April 2016 voting opened province-wide online. There were 14,208

votes cast and Scotty received 4,923 (35 per cent) of the votes. The Provincial Protocol Office will take the lead on the subsequent legislative change which is required for designating provincial emblems. The Provincial Fossil Campaign also featured a competition aimed at Grade 7 students who submitted videos making a case for their choice for Saskatchewan’s provincial fossil. Out of 24 videos submitted, the winning classroom

is Chad Jeannot’s class from Alameda School in Alameda. The classroom promoted Big Bert, the 92 million year-old crocodile, as the best candidate. Big Bert took second place in the public vote with 3,326 votes (23 per cent). Jeannot’s class won a visit from RSM palaeontologist Tim Tokaryk. Jeannot’s classroom was introduced in the House at the Legislative Building this morning and also helped

Minister Docherty to unveil Scotty the T. rex as the winning fossil at the RSM. The T.rex Discovery Centre, located at #1 T-rex Drive in Eastend, reopens for the season on Saturday, May 21, 2016. A cast of Scotty’s skeleton is on display at the centre, which is open daily from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m until Labour Day. Visit www.royalsaskmuseum.ca. Admission is by donation.

Seeding nears an end Great strides were made this past week, as 81 per cent of the crop is now seeded, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report. Warm and dry weather has allowed producers to remain well ahead of the five year (2011-2015) seeding average of 59 per cent. Many producers have completed seeding operations and are now starting in-crop herbicide applications. Seeding is most advanced in the south-

west, where producers have 90 per cent of the crop seeded. Eightyseven per cent of the crop is seeded in the southeast; 84 per cent in the northwest; 83 per cent in the west-central region; 75 per cent in the northeast; and 68 per cent in the east-central region. Rainfall in the province ranged from trace amounts to several inches in the west-central region. Some areas will need rain in the coming weeks to help crops emerge and establish.

Topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as three per cent surplus, 83 per cent adequate, 13 per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 72 per cent adequate, 20 per cent short and seven per cent very short. The majority of emerged crops are either at or ahead of their normal developmental stages for this time of year. Overall, crops are in

good condition, although there has been some damage caused by flea beetles, cutworms, strong winds, localized flooding and lack of moisture. Pasture conditions are rated as seven per cent excellent, 57 per cent good, 26 per cent fair, nine per cent poor and one per cent very poor. Producers are busy completing seeding operations and controlling pests. Follow the 2016 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture.

PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay After a year of writing this article so much has happened. My favorite thing that happens on an almost daily basis now is meeting many of you and talking about everything from alternative energy, prepping, gardening, wisdom from the past, the world is changing, and more. What I know very well now is that these topics I write about every week and more are not just on my mind, but many of yours as well. As we have toured around in tradeshows, it has been absolutely rewarding and encouraging for all of us at Problem Solved to share our passion, our proverb and our war cry: It spells SOS – Self Sufficient, Off Grid, and Secure. The last “S” can mean so many things – Safe, Sure, Salvation, Savvy and so on --- but the one word that is the focus of this particular thoughtful article today is “START” Even if it’s just to think about living in a manner where you understand what it means to be self sustained or how.

I write a lot of these articles and makes suggestions on ideas, technologies, techniques and more, but many still think it’s only for those who have money that can attain the SOS model from the previous above statement. In Fact very little money is needed, but you must get moving: read a book, try foraging, learn to can or dehydrate foods, wash clothes without your washing machine, turn your power or your water off for 3 days, eat food you can only buy locally grown and just start learning what it might take to keep life as normal as possible. It’s not about being afraid of the sky falling; rather it’s about gaining some God given confidence and ability to take care of yourself and your family, friends and neighbors and those who need help. The truth is money is in the way of a self sustained life because it has removed us from just thinking about a solution and getting it done rather than just trying to pay for one. I keep writing these notes because I am saddened by the phrase “No one has common sense anymore.” This is not a sentence any of us should be proud to say, especial-

ly if it might be about our own family, let’s be determined together to live free. Let’s use our pioneer friends as an example. A family who was travelling across the prairies to find their own place in the world would stop when they found a water source, begin hunting and foraging immediately, start ripping up sod from the very ground they were standing on to build a house. They were not saying they were stuck because of money, laziness did not take over and say ”I can’t do it”, no they had a problem, looked for a solution no

matter what it might look like, and started. The key word is START. We are going to be at the Regina Farm Progress Show June 15-17th, 2016 with some firewood processing equipment, come and see us. We are also having a demo day in Stenen later in June as well, details to follow next week. For more info, check out our Facebook page at Problem Solved – Alternative or email me at service@myps247. com Benjamin Galay is the owner of Problem Solved Inc., and the owner of Grace Gardens Greenhouses in Stenen.

Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Ensemble completed their dance year with the annual Kalyna Competition and Festival held in Yorkton. Every group performed well with many receiving scholarships for Highest Mark in Transcarpathian and Bukovynian regions as well as the Hopak. The highlight of the weekend was Syla, the senior mixed group shown here, receiving an outstanding mark of 97 for their Volyn dance. The new costumes from Ukraine were brilliant on stage with the fast-paced music and high energy. Troyanda would like to thank UCC – Saskatchewan Provincial Council and Sask Lotteries for the grant to help purchase these costumes. Image by Simple Shots by Jackie

RCMP Musical Ride to perform in Roblin, Man. As part of the celebration it is their privilege, with help from the Roblin Ag Society to host one of Canada’s most recognized icons, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Musical Ride, which will be performing at the Roblin Fair Grounds in Roblin, Manitoba on July12, 2016. Celebrations will start at 7:00 p.m. with performances by local Entertainers, followed by

the RCMP Musical Ride at 8:00 p.m. The RCMP Musical Ride represents a colourful Canadian tradition. The troop of, 32 horses and riders will perform a variety of cavalry drills choreographed to music. Working through a unique medium, they support the RCMP community policing efforts throughout Canada. The Musical Ride was developed in 1876

I asked Yvonne what it was like filming this dual role, and she told me she was excited to take on the challenge: “It’s a really wonderful script, written by Trent Haaga. And the person behind all these films, (executive producer) Pierre David, makes a ton of films for Lifetime. He has figured it all out. I really like Pierre. I think he’s lovely. by early members of the North-West Mounted Police to display their riding ability and entertain the local community. It has evolved over the decades into a uniquely Canadian performance enjoyed by tens of thousands of spectators every year. Members of the Musical Ride are first and foremost police officers. They all have at least two years experi-

ence in active police work before volunteering for duty with the Musical Ride. Surprisingly, most have no prior riding experience. The general public will have an opportunity to pay a visit to the newly renovated Fairground barns where the horses will be stabled during the day on July 12 and talk to some of the officers who train, work and perform with the horses.

On July 12, some very excited members of our local 4-H Horse Clubs have been invited to participate in a basic training workshop led by RCMP Musical Ride Trainers who will work with them and their horses as part of the RCMP Youth initiative. Tickets for the event are $15.00 per person (children 6 & under free) and are available from any member of the Roblin

& District Lions Club, at Mitchell’s Drug Store, Roblin Home Hardware, Parkway Co-op Office and Parkway Co-op Gas Bar. For more information call 204-937-4944 or email: roblinlionsclub@ gmail.com or check out our group on facebook: Roblin & District Lions Club . Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated towards needs identified within the community.

“A big part of my preparation was trying to keep these two characters separate and to make them quite opposite. You have Juliana, who is a materialistic brat. Then you have Deb, who is kind of a barfly and completely in pain. She drinks and she smokes and she gets into fights. Keeping those two people separate was the main challenge, because you don’t want to watch a movie where you have twins and they are doing the same stuff and they’re basically the same.” Q: I have been watching a series on ABC called “American Crime,” and it hasn’t been on for three or four weeks, and I was wondering if it has been canceled. -- Mike H., Palm Springs, Florida A: ABC has renewed “American Crime” for a third season, and like the previous two seasons, it most likely will premiere in the first quarter of the new year. And also like

the previous two seasons, viewers can expect an entirely new storyline, with familiar faces playing new characters. I can’t wait to see what John Ridley and company have in store for us. Readers: Three days after I filed my most recent TV column, in

which I spoke of the future of “Castle,” ABC announced that it had decided to cancel the long-running series. Along with “Castle,” ABC also has canceled “Wicked City” (which was the first to go this past fall), “The Family,” “Galavant,” “Marvel’s Agent Carter,” “The

Muppets,” “Nashville” (which is being heavily shopped to other networks, like Hulu and CMT -- fingers crossed!) and “Of Kings and Prophets.” Stay tuned, as I’ll reveal over the next several weeks which of your favorite shows at the other networks got the ax.

Second Nurse Practitioner at Foam Lake Dr. F. Hussain Bia will retire effective May 31, 2016 after 42 years of service. A second fulltime Nurse Practitioner position has been posted and will join Nurse Practitioner, Lorraine Barker, at the Primary Health Clinic in the Foam lake Health Centre on June 1, 2016.

“We want to sincerely thank Dr. Bia for his many years of service and wish him the very best of health and happiness in his retirement,” says Sandy Tokaruk, Vice President of Integrated Primary Health Services. Appointments can be made with either of the two Nurse Practitioners

by calling the clinic at 306-272-3325. In addition to the second Nurse Practitioner, the health region is in discussions to secure regular physician clinic days. Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses (NP/RNs) with enhanced knowledge of nursing gained through addition-

• Clean your paintbrushes before you begin that spring-cleaning paint job. Bring a few cups of white vinegar to a boil, and soak brushes in the vinegar for up to 20 minutes. Use a plastic scrubbie to remove stuck-on bits, then rinse in cool water. Use a finetoothed comb to get rid of what’s leftover. The brush should be clean and the bristles nice and soft.

• Don’t overlook your own garden and yard when putting together a centerpiece for a backyard BBQ or informal gathering. Herbs make a wonderful bouquet. • You can polish metal with wax paper. • To keep your kitchen trash can smelling sweet naturally, put three drops of eucalyptus or cinnamon oil on a cotton ball and drop it the bottom of the can. • What’s the right way to fold towels? So your folded towel uses the depth of the shelf it’s stored on. That way, you can store the maximum towels per shelf.

• Do you have a large assortment of different colored cupcake liners? Store them in a mason jar. You’ll be able to see what you have at a glance, and they fit perfectly inside a wide-mouth jar. • “Bath toys plus glue gun equals no more gross moldy water inside your tub duck. Just use your glue gun to seal up the ‘drain hole’ on the bottom of most bath toys. I honestly don’t know why they do that, as it seems to only suck up water and not drain anything!” -L.R. in Virginia Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

2 FORE1 GOLF WITH POWER CART

306-563-4104

Quickly gaining the reputation as one of Saskatchewan’s Best 9’s with 5 of 9 holes re-built in 1999 by Grant Golf of Winnipeg, Canora boasts two settings - tall poplar & evergreen fairways contrast into links style holes with knee high natural grass areas lining wide fairways. As well as the park like beauty of the golf course, a spectacular Parkland view opens up adjacent to 6 & 7 fairways including a pristine country church in the background. A driving range, practice green and putting green are also available to sharpen your game. Canora is located between Good Spirit Provincial Park, Duck Mountain Provincial Park & Crystal Lake Resort, and is a must to play for golf enthusiasts of all skill levels. Greens Superintendent, Peter Steranko, has done a yeoman job in getting the course and specifically the greens in great shape. The clubhouse, managed by Donna Rock, features a sun-drenched deck area with food and beverage service. The clubhouse also caters to non-golf events.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of possibilities begin to open up by midweek. Some seem more appealing than others. But wait for more facts to emerge later on before you consider

which to choose. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bravo to the determined Bovine. While others might give up, you continue to search for answers. Expect your Taurean tenacity to begin

paying off by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might want to consider stepping back from the task at hand for a while. This could help you get a better perspective on what you’ve done and what still needs to be done. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your keen Cancerian insight should help you determine whether a new offer is solid or just more fluff ‘n’ stuff. The clues are all

HOLLYWOOD — Tom Cruise wants his Mummy! Not long ago we suggested that the 53-year-old superstar should stop making action films and return to making movies like “Born on the Fourth of July” (1990), “Jerry Maguire” (1996) and “Magnolia” (1999), for which he received Oscar nominations. Now instead of the tall buildings and fast-moving vehicles, he’ll be chasing a mummy — and mummies don’t run very fast. Universal Studios has long wanted to reboot its “Mummy” franchise, which started in 1932 with Boris Karloff. There were seven “Mummy” films made between 1999 and 2015, ending with the four “Scorpion King” movies. Tom Cruise gets his “Mummy” come July 2017.

Meanwhile, “Beautiful Mind” Oscar-winner Russell Crowe has signed on to play “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (for which Fredric March won an Oscar in 1931). He’s currently onscreen in the comedy “The Nice Guys,” with Ryan Gosling, Matt Bomer and Kim Basinger. Hollywood bigwigs have voted Johnny Depp the actor they’d most like to be invisible, so now he’ll play “The Invisible Man,” opening in April 2018. Woody Allen’s new film, “Cafe Society,” narrated by Allen and starring “The Heartbreak Kid,” Oscar-nominee Jeannie Berlin (daughter of Elaine May), Steve Carrell, Jesse Eisenberg, Blake Lively and Kristin Stewart, opens July 15. It is his is 47th film, and his first shot with a Sony CineAlta F65 digital camera. Remember when Allen said he’d only shoot in Europe because the U.S. was too expensive?

Well, he must have gotten fantastic tax breaks and discounts, because this film was shot in the streets of Los Angeles and Brooklyn. Who’d ever imagine that wrestling star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would become one of the most successful film stars of this decade? In 2014, his “Hercules” film cost $100 million and grossed $245 million, while Kellen Lutz’s “Legend of Hercules,” from the year before, cost $70 million and only grossed $61 million. “Furious 7” followed in 2015 at a cost of $190 million and grossed $1.5 billion, while “San Andreas” cost $110 million and grossed $447 million. Now he’s teamed up with Kevin Hart (“Ride Along 2” cost $40 million and grossed $122.6 million) for another kind of ride-along film, “Central Intelligence,” arriving June 17. “Fast 8” is due April 14, and then

DEAR DR. ROACH: I went to the emergency ward this weekend with severe chest pains and bloating. I was sure I was having a heart attack. After tests, a CT scan revealed I had pancreatitis (they mentioned a number 222 for some enzyme or something); also, my potassium was low and sodium was critically low, at 113. I am 62, 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weigh 210; I have Type 2 diabetes with an A1C of 6.7 and high blood pressure. I was discharged after four days with no restrictions other than to eat light and refrain from alcohol 100 percent

for the rest of my life to avoid another occurrence. I had never heard of pancreatitis, and it was devastating news to me. I make wine, and have for years. I do not drink anything except wine, and the thought of never being able to drink again is very disturbing. Is there a possibility that I may be able to drink wine again in the future? The doctor’s assessment seemed pretty harsh to me. — J.C. ANSWER: Acute pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, an organ that makes digestive enzymes and insulin. Acute pancreatitis can be very severe, even lifethreatening on occasion. There are many causes, but the most common in North America are gallstones and alcohol. The diagnosis is made from the history and physical exam, and an elevated pancreas enzyme level, usually amylase or lipase. These often are elevated

into the thousand range. A CT scan also can help confirm the diagnosis. Before concluding that alcohol is the cause of the pancreatitis, it’s important to make sure there is nothing blocking the pancreatic and common bile duct, such as a stone or tumor. The CT scan is good, but if there is doubt, an endoscopy may need to be performed. If your doctor determined that the cause is alcohol, then I’m afraid I have to agree that no amount of alcohol is safe. Drinking even modest amounts of wine, even months or years later, could bring about pancreatitis again. In addition to the pain and suffering that go with an episode, the more episodes of acute pancreatitis you have, the more likely you

are to develop chronic pancreatitis (with constant pain), pancreatic insufficiency (leading to inability to properly digest food) and worsen your diabetes. DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is 61, and has twice had to take a course of vitamin D, 50,000 units weekly. I don’t understand why he isn’t taking a daily dose. — L.D. ANSWER: It is commonly recommended for physicians to treat very low levels of vitamin D with vitamin D-2 at the high dose of 50,000 units once weekly for six to eight weeks. However, I have seen many people who, like your husband, take the course of therapy and then don’t take any daily vitamin D and just become deficient

again. In most cases, I recommend vitamin D-3 at 800-1,000 units daily, then rechecking the level. Some people need even more, especially if there is poor absorption, such as after gastric bypass surgery or in people with celiac disease. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer

individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Zootopia” (PG) — In the futuristic metropolis of Zootopia, society is run by all types of animals — predators and prey, from big ol’ rhinos to tiny hamsters — coexisting (mostly) peacefully in a diverse and advanced society. Optimistic officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) follows her dream of becoming the first bunny on the police force, only to face doubts and put-downs from the bigger animals in the precinct. When a string of attacks threatens the predator-prey peace, Judy teams up with Nick, a sly-fox con artist (Jason Bateman) to solve the case. When militants attack the U.S. Embassy in Libya, a group of ex-SEALS working as a private security force are shown ready to rescue, but held back by an indecisive CIA operative (David Costabile). HAPPY 55TH BIRTHDAY

Stella Tourand Remembering the dearest mom, grandma, great grandma and friend Stella Tourand Apr.23/1924 - May 30/2012 Feel no guilt in laughter, She knows how much we care. Feel no sorrow in a smile That she’s not here to share. We cannot grieve forever, She wouldn’t want us to. She’d hope that we would carry on The way we always do. So we talk about the good times And the ways she showed she cared. The days we spent together, All the happiness we shared. Let the memories surround us, A word someone may say Will suddenly recapture A time, an hour, a day. That brings her back as clearly As though she were still here, And fills us with the feelings That she is always near. For if we keep these memories We will never be apart And she will live forever Locked safe within our hearts

Paul was left shaken by Ava’s warning. Anna was forced to confess. Michael made an emotional plea. Dillon caught Tracy off guard. Wait to See: Carly confronts Finn about his secret.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Meredith tried to convince Victor that he shouldn’t give up hope for a reconciliation with his family. When a problem arose at Newman, and Summer couldn’t locate Victoria, Luca encouraged her to send a proposal to the executives and pretend it was from Victoria. Jack had no idea that Phyllis was having an affair with his brother. In the midst of an argument, Mariah pulled Kevin into a kiss. Jill arrived back in town and warned Hilary that she didn’t want her anywhere near Katherine’s foundation. Michael told Lauren that his suspension had finally been lifted. Victoria got nervous when Travis quizzed her about her past. Wait to See: Stitch receives some disturbing news about Max.

Warm weather brings families outdoors to enjoy spring pleasures and chores. If you have a yard to tend, tackling the weeds is probably an ongoing item on your “things to do” list. Recently, while working in our garden, I groaned as I looked at our yard full of dandelions popping up. But when my 3-year-old neighbor Isla happily presented me with a freshly picked bouquet of dandelions, I was reminded that when an adult sees weeds, a child instead sees a field of golden flowers. “Isla was delighted when these first ‘flowers’ appeared all over the neighborhood,” said her mom, Liv Guillaume. Auctions

“They spark her interest in nature and her creativity.” Like Isla, here are some fun ways to enjoy these die-hard flowers with children: Make a Dandelion Necklace Pick a small basketful of the long-stemmed flowers. The stems should be equal in length. Slit a hole in one stem with your fingernail or a butter knife. Then slip a second stem through it. Make a slit in the second stem and continue the chain until it is as long

SOUR CREAM COOKIES Subtle nutmeg flavor and a light cake-like texture make this treat an elegant partner for a cup of afternoon tea.

•1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar •1 large egg •2 teaspoons vanilla extract •1/2 cup sour cream

•1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon baking powder •1/2 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon baking soda •1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg •1/2 cup butter or margarine (1 stick), softened

Heat oven to 400 F. Grease large cookie sheet. On waxed paper, combine flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda and nutmeg. In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat butter and 1 cup sugar until creamy, occa-

sionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. Beat in egg and vanilla, then sour cream, until wellcombined. With mixer at low speed, beat in flour mixture just until blended, occasionally scraping bowl. Drop dough by rounded measuring tablespoon, 2 inches apart, onto prepared cookie sheet. Sprinkle lightly with some of remaining sugar. Bake cookies 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned around edges.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column about the owner whose therapy dog helps children with a fear of dogs. I also have a Golden Retriever therapy dog, and we have had many success stories. Please tell your readers that organizations have different requirements for therapy dogs to visit their facilities, as well as for the handlers. For example, the hospitals we visit have additional health screening

requirements for the handler. If they’re looking for a good certification for their dog, Therapy Dogs International is a highly accepted certification. — Ed A., Indiana DEAR ED: Many thanks for the tips! It’s definitely important to do your homework and learn as much as you can before submitting your dog and yourself as a therapy dog and handler. Different facilities may need additional clearances — not just a certification from a therapy-dog organization, but health checks for the owner/handler and background checks. Therapy Dogs International has details on its website about its requirements for therapy

dogs, and guidelines and testing information that will give owners a good idea of what they need to do to get their dog ready. For example, dogs have to be at least 1 year old. They don’t have to take any specific therapy-dog classes, but they should have at the very least basic to intermediate obedience skills, a good temperament and up-todate vaccinations and health records. Owners also need to be aware that therapy dogs are not service dogs — that is a different testing and certification process with different, often more stringent, requirements. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

Flea beetles and cutworms on Canola A26

June 3, 2016 | This Week Marketplace

Lyndon Hicks Regional Crops Specialist Yorkton

Flea beetles and cutworms can impact plant populations and without proper scouting, canola becomes an easy target. There are two types of flea beetles that will cause economic losses in canola and mustard

(

crucifer and striped. Crucifer flea beetles are dark in color with a metallic bluish sheen while striped are black with two yellow stripes down their backs. Each species has one generation each year, however adults will appear twice within the growing season. Once the ground starts warming in the spring, overwintered

adults will emerge and become active within 5-11 days. They will feed first on volunteers and weeds, moving over to the susceptible crop once it emerges. Adults start laying eggs late May and continue for about 30 days. Adult emergence then starts again in late July and can last until September.

Figure 1. Flea beetle life cycle and damage. http://www.canolacouncil.org/crop-production/canola-grower’s-manual-contents/chapter-10b-insects/chapter-10b#fleabeetles Flea beetles will chew small holes in canola seedlings in the spring, and pods, leaves and stems in the fall. The economic threshold of flea beetle damage is when 25% of the cotyledon is destroyed and flea beetles are present and continue to feed. Keep checking for damage on the newest growth and on the edges of fields. Once

canola reaches the 3-4 leaf stage it can outgrow the damage. The pale western and the redbacked cutworm are the most common of the five species of cutworms. Cutworms only produce one generation per year. Adult moths lay eggs in the fall, and most species overwinter as eggs and

hatch in April or early May. Larvae feed mainly at night on weeds and volunteers until the host crops emerge. Late May and the first 3 weeks in June are the likely times to see cutworm damage. Alfalfa, dry beans, corn, flax, peas and cereals are all susceptible and economic thresholds for each of these crops are all different.
