Q: I love ABC’s new series “Blood and Oil.” The actor who plays Don Johnson’s son in the drama looks familiar. What else has he done? -- Eric P., Lancaster, Pennsylvania A: Scott Michael Foster is the fellow you’re thinking of. The 30-year-old actor was a regular cast member on “Greek,” spent a season on “Californication” as Becca’s boyfriend who Hank couldn’t stand, was on “Once Upon a Time,” and “Chasing Life.” Now he plays Hap Briggs’ (Don Johnson) ne’er-do-well son, Wick, on the nighttime sudster. He recently wrapped on the feature film “My Dead Boyfriend,” which was directed by Anthony

Edwards and also stars Heather Graham, John Corbett and Gina Gershon. Despite the star power of Don Johnson, Amber Valletta and Chace Crawford, ABC recently announced that it has cut back its original order of “Blood and Oil” from 13 episodes to 10, which could mean that this first season of “Blood and Oil” very well might be its last if there isn’t a drastic upturn in its ratings.

Look for season one to air its finale in December. *** Q: I just found “Mike and Molly” on reruns, and I love the show. Please tell me it has not been canceled. If not, when will it return for a new season? -- Tony O. in Florida A: The hit CBS sitcom starring Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell will be back for a sixth season. While the network (as of this writing) has not yet announced a premiere date, it will be toward the end of this year, so keep an eye on your local TV listings. For late-breaking news about this show -- and many other shows, movies and celebrities -- be sure to follow me on Twitter (twitter.com/ Celebrity_Extra). *** Q: Can you give me an update on Masterpiece Mystery’s “Sherlock”? I can’t wait for this series to start back up again! --

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column responding to the reader whose cats will not use the litter box. I have three cats and two litter boxes, and they’re doing just fine. Here’s

what I use: I put a litter called “Feline Pine” in the boxes. It comes in pellets, which don’t weigh much, and you don’t have to use much, just cover the bottom of the pan. When the cats pee, the pellets turn into something like sawdust. Also, if the reader scoops the boxes every day, or even twice a day, no one will even know he has cats! Trust me! -- Jean H., via email DEAR JEAN: Thanks

for the tip! Trying a completely different type of cat litter can help in the case of litter box avoidance. Some cats are turned off by scented litter, while others have an aversion to a litter’s texture. And of course, diligent litter box cleaning makes every one in the household -- humans and cats -- much happier. As I said in the previous article, owners whose cats are avoiding the box have to experiment a bit

Diana T., via email A: While season four of the series doesn’t start shooting until spring 2016, we do have a TV special to tide us over. Called “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride,” Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman reprise their roles of Sherlock and Watson, respectively, to bring us this 90-minute movie. It will premiere on Jan. 1, 2016, in both the U.S. and U.K. -- a first for this series, as the U.K. usually airs the series first -- at 9 p.m. ET, as well as online at pbs.org/masterpiece. *** Q: Where has Chris Vance and his series “Transporter” gone? Will TNT air season three? If he is not involved with the series, what is he doing now? -- Laura B., via email A: As of this writing, TNT has not announced whether “Transporter: The Series” will be to find a solution. Using boxes with lids, or boxes without lids; replacing heavily soiled carpet and backing and treating with a “keep away” spray; increasing the number of litter boxes available; and observing the cats’ behavior for potential conflict or health issues. Readers, if you have more suggestions for owners dealing with this problem, send them my way at ask@pawscorner. com.

back for a third season. However, if you need your Chris Vance fix now, he has a recurring role on CBS’s “Supergirl” as the villain Non. His first appearance is in episode

eight, which airs Dec. 14. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com.

Future of agriculture industry complicated By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer

The conditions of agriculture are always something of a roller coaster but what do those in the industry see in the near future? Several questions looking at to the future of the industry were put to a panel at the Sask Grains Expo last Wednesday as part of their Grain Millers Har vest Showdown in Yorkton last week to find out what their views were; starting with whether there was a future for the family farm. “Who and when did this ‘person’ set the size of a family farm?” responded producer Kristjan Hebert. He noted in the United States there are farms with 50-70,000 acres still owned by a family. “My definition of a

A panel looked at the future of farming during last week’s Grain Expo in the city. family farm is a business that excels,” he continued. To excel means growing, said Kristjan. “Inflation is three per cent, so if you don’t do something to get bigger you’re going to die,” he said. Brennan Turner, president, Farmlead. com said “everybody has different expectations of a family farm.”

But one thing is a constant, making sure you are getting paid for your efforts on the farm. He said his grandfather always said it was a must “to pay yourself first,” and that remains important today. That said, Turner said farm size changes the role of the farm owner. “Once you go big it becomes much more of a managerial position,”

he said. Stuart Smyth, Assistant Professor & Research Chair in Agri-Food Innovations, Un iver sit y of Saskatchewan said larger farms do require “increased management skills,” and a willingness to accept new technologies, whether familyowned, or not. In terms of new tech Smyth said the next big

wave on the farm will be in the area of digital technologies. “Agriculture is probably the last economy in North America to be hit by digital tech,” he said. Whether a family farm, or not, climate change is a factor producers may have to deal with in the longer term Smyth said that may not be a disaster on the Canadian Prairies. It is likely to see the area more akin to the northern mid-west in the U.S., which would mean conditions more favourable for corn and soybeans, two crops already expanding into the region. As an example Smyth said on a trip from Carlyle to Stoughton “and never lost sight of a corn field in that 30-miles.” Hebert said “any new crop, or technology is exciting,” adding farm-

ers are good at adapting to such changes. One thing that will be needed is a reliance on the science that comes before change, and Smyth said that trust is not what it once was among consumers. “We’re seeing a whole push back against science in agriculture,” he said. Turner said “it’s early incredible” how “misconstrued the perception is of what’s done on the farm.” Smyth said farmers have to be more proactive in getting their side of the story on food production out to consumers, adding that means becoming “involved in social media.” As it stands now “the message they (consumers) get to hear is from the opponents. “Farmers themselves have to get involved in the story.”

Work continues toward MB potash mine Russell – Key indicators provided by the Municipality of Russell – Binscarth, highlight the positive impact that would accrue from development of the Russell-McAuley potash deposit, says Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Wally Melnyk. “In our minds there is no question that a Manitoba potash project in our region would be a critical economic development for the province, the city of Winnipeg, and for our region” Melnyk says. “There would be about $21 billion in overall provincial impact, including about $2 billion in royalties to the provincial government over the projected life of the project,” (40 years) he says. Projections also include a total of about

$8.8 million of annual provincial payroll related taxes and about $4 million in annual property tax revenue. The projections are based on two million tonnes of annual production capacity, Saskatchewan potash industry documents and the Manitoba Potash Project Feasibility Study (1987), Melnyk said. Russell – Binscarth Mayor Len Derkach says the investment and economic projections are both lifechanging and exciting. “There would be about 600 direct full-time jobs when the mine is up and fully operational and an additional 4,000 person years of construction related employment,” Derkach said. “We are more than ready to prepare ourselves to meet the many changes and assume the increased responsibil-

ities inherent with such a massive development,” he said. Confirmation by Manitoba Mineral Resources Minister Dave Chomiak in a recent Winnipeg Free Press story that two Saskatchewan firms, a major Minnesota player and a Chinese-Manitoba joint venture are in the running for the rights to develop a potash deposit near Russell, have increased local awareness and enthusiasm for the proposed mine. The Mayor has once again called on the government to ensure that the successful bidder be one that will be committed to the development of the deposit within the province for the benefit of all Manitobans in essence we want to see the potash mined in Manitoba, processed in Manitoba and the fin-

ished product shipped out of Manitoba. It has become very clear by the closure of a potash mine in New Brunswick by PCS and the reduction of potash production in Saskatchewan, that if awarded the bid, a Saskatchewan potash company would simply “ice” this project. This is not acceptable and does nothing for the economy of Manitoba! Derkach once again confirmed his Councils support for a company interested and capable of developing this project as a mining, processing and marketing entity! We are aware that such a proposal is before Government and we are prepared to support the Government in making this choice for the people of Manitoba! Derkach said Chomiak

confirmed that deliberations are down to two of the four entities that were short-listed and that the province was hopeful of being in a position to go into negotiations with a company in the very near future. We have communi-

cated with the office of the Manitoba Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, the Hon. Dave Chomiak and look forward to working with his office and officials to ensure our readiness for this much anticipated project approval.

Cacti add spice to your decor If you don’t really have a green thumb but still love plants, you may be ready to appreciate the cactus as a houseplant. You don’t have to have a Southwestern decor to enjoy cacti; there are many attractive varieties that require very little care. Caring for your cactus Cacti need lots of light and will only thrive if you place them in your home’s sunniest, brightest spots. Accustomed to surviving extreme drought conditions, your cactus will require very little water and fertilizer. From time to time, remove any dust buildup on its stems with a softbristled brush in order to keep it looking beautiful with clean spines and a glossy skin. Colourful flowers Many cacti species produce splendid colourful flowers in spring. If you want to treat yourself to a flowering cactus, be sure to buy it when it’s in bloom. That way, you won’t be in any doubt

Flowering cacti create a beautiful mosaic of desert-inspired beauty. as to the maturity of the plant and its ability to flower. The prickly pear cactus Originally from Mexico, the prickly pear cactus is a particularly interesting species. It produces a delicious, edible fruit called cactus pear or Barbary fig. Like other cacti, its skin is covered with tiny invisible spines that are very difficult to remove. Moreover, prickly pear seed oil is considered one of the most expensive and precious in the world. Are you tempted to grow one yourself?

Heh everyone my name is Dexter. I am just over two years old and I’m a big friendly easy going guy. I love to be around my people and I’m really good with kids! I like to play and go for walks and just enjoy your company. Right now I’m living on a farm where I am very loyal. I would do best with a fenced yard if I move to the city or an acreage farm would be good too. I’m not limiting myself as I’m up for my next adventure hopefully with you! Please don’t put me in a position where I’m supposed to play with cats as I’m too big and sometimes I forget that! Please consider giving me a chance cause really I’m just a big goofball that wants to be loved! If you want more information on me please visit www.yorktongaar.com or the Facebook page. “DEAR ELF, I HOPE YOU HAVE A NICE WINTER” is the greeting written with a blue crayon in big cap letters and tucked into the makeshift mailbag tacked to the side of the padlocked door at the base of a gnarly ash tree. For more than 20 years in Minneapolis, young friends of the endearing Lake Harriet tree elf have crouched down by the little wooden door, nimbly unlatched it and left handwritten letters and drawings inside a hollow, carved space of the tree. Returning two or three days later to the path around the city lake, they come to the “elf house” to find a response on a small piece of paper,

just to them. Seasons change, and now eager children have to wait until next spring to open the miniature, magical door again. “I have moved home to my castle,” reads the engraved 1-inch sign above the threshold. Even elves close up their summer homes for the winter. Maybe your family has already been scurrying around like busy elves getting ready for the impending arrival of winter -- washing windows, raking leaves and storing baseball bats and mitts. Here are more weekend activities you can do together to shift gears into cooler weather and the holidays. * Make a “be prepared” kit filled with supplies to have on hand if lights go out during a winter storm. Cover a shoebox with paper, and decorate it with safety symbols, using markers and stickers. Fill it with

a flashlight, candles and matches, battery-operated clock and radio, and entertainment such as cards or small board games. * Update your family’s wallet photos by replacing old pictures with new school and informal photos. Send copies to proud grandparents, aunts and uncles. It’s a good time to take holiday card photos, too. * Sort through closets and drawers. Put on some music, and have your kids stage an impromptu outerwear “fashion show” to find out which sweaters, jackets and boots still fit and which don’t. Donate useable, clean clothing

and drop it off together. * Discuss ways you can volunteer and participate at your child’s school. Many children thrive in school when parents get involved in their education. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. 1 tablespoon white vinegar 1 egg

I’ve learned the hard way that the secret to a hassle-free holiday cooking is to plan ahead. For large holiday meals, the freezer is definitely your friend. Almost everything from appetizers and side dishes to desserts can be prepared and frozen ahead of time. Planning ahead for the holidays also saves money, because you can buy your holiday menu items as they go on sale, prepare them and freeze them. I know that ready-tobake pie crusts and premade pies are readily available at most grocery stores, but during the holidays, I love everything to be homemade. I’ve found that by using my food processor, I can make a flaky pie crust that takes only a few minutes to process and can be frozen until needed. Holiday favorites like apple, pecan, sweet potato and pumpkin pie actu-

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your ruling planet, Mars, allows you to assume a sense of command that can help you turn a chaotic workplace situation into one that’s orderly, productive and, yes, even friendly. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Getting a relationship that’s been stuck in a rut up and running again depends on how far you want to run with it. Be honest with yourself as you consider which decision to make. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be wary of rumors that seem to be coming from everywhere this week. Waiting for the facts before you act means never having to say you’re sorry you followed the wrong lead. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A difficult personal matter might prompt you to turn to a trusted friend to help you sort through a maze of emotional conflicts. The weekend should bring some welcome news. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some of the new people coming into the Lion’s life could play pivotal roles in future personal and professional matters. Meanwhile, an old friend might have an important

3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar 1 1/2 cups butter-flavored shortening sticks, chilled and cut into cubes 1/4 cup ice-cold water, plus 1 tablespoon

1. In the bowl of a food processor, blend the flour and salt. Add shortening, a few cubes at a time, pulsing 3 or 4 times to combine after each addition. In a small bowl, combine water, vinegar and egg. Slowly add the water mixture to the flour mixture, a tablespoon at a time, pulsing 2 or 3 times after each addition until some of the dough forms into a ball. 2. Scrape the dough out on to a lightly floured cutting board. You should be able to gently press any remaining pieces of the dough into a ball. Handle the dough as little as possible or it will become tough. Divide dough into two equal parts. Gently flatten into round disk shapes and wrap them in plastic wrap. 3. If using the dough immediately, chill at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator. Chilling allows the dough to relax, become more elastic, absorb any remaining liquids, and will ensure that the crust will be flaky. To freeze: Wrap dough in plastic wrap and then

message. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A delay in getting things moving on schedule can be a blessing in disguise. Use this extra time to do more research so you can buttress any of the weaker points with solid facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might need to get involved in a personal matter before it becomes a serious problem. Also, be wary of someone offering to mediate, unless you can be sure of his or her motives. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Taking sides in a workplace or domestic dispute could prolong the problem. Stay out and stay cool. Then you can be friends with both parties when things settle down. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A friendship has the potential to become

something more, and with this week’s aspects favoring romance, you might feel that this possibility is worth exploring. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) The new job you want might require you to relocate. If so, keep an open mind and weigh all the positives and negatives before making your decision. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new relationship seems to be everything you could have hoped for. Congratulations. Meanwhile, it’s not too early to get some feedback on that new project you’re working on. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might have decided to get out of the fast-moving current and just float around hither and yon for a while. But you might find that the new opportunity is too tempting to turn down.

ally taste better when made ahead of time, and they freeze beautifully. After baking, allow the pies to cool on a rack for five to six hours. Wrap each pie in a single layer of plastic wrap and two layers of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Place them in your freezer. You can stack the single crust pies, if necessary. Allow the pies to thaw out at room temperature at least eight hours before you plan to serve them. in two layers of aluminum foil. When ready to use, thaw dough completely in the refrigerator before rolling out on a lightly floured surface. FUDGY PECAN PIE This pie is the best of both worlds: The center is similar to a pecan brownie, and the filling and the flaky crust is like a wonderful pecan pie. You may want to double the recipe and freeze one for the holidays. 3 eggs 3 tablespoons butter, softened 1 1/4 cups light corn syrup 1/2 cup sugar 1/3 cup baking cocoa,

DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a CT scan due to broken ribs from a very recent fall. The scan revealed a large teratoma near my heart. I am 69 and was previously unaware of this formation. No suggestion has been given to me regarding further investigation or treatment of the teratoma. I am assuming it may have been present at birth and does not cause any problem. But now I am wondering if it should be monitored. Can a teratoma grow or migrate in the body? Any information on teratoma will be appreciated. -- S.S. ANSWER: A teratoma is a type of tumor of germ cells -- the cells that become eggs or sperm. They can occur within the testis or ovary, but also can occur outside the gonads. When they do, they usually are found in the midline of the body. A frequent place is the anterior superior mediastinum, in between the lungs and below the breastbone. Teratomas usually are benign tumors, but some types can act like cancers. Your tumor is unlikely to have been there since

birth. Nobody knows whether the germ cell that became a teratoma properly went into the gonads during development, or whether the cell left the gonad and then became a tumor. It is clear, however, that men with teratoma outside the gonads are at higher risk for developing testicular cancer later on. Teratomas, being derived from germ cells, are capable of creating any tissue. Teeth and hair are sometimes found inside teratomas. I am very surprised you haven’t been recommended for surgical removal. Surgery is usually successful at curing teratoma. They certainly can grow, and occasionally become very large.

I would certainly recommend seeing an oncologist (cancer specialist). Thoracic (chest) surgeons operate on this area. It may be that the position is difficult, but a surgeon should still evaluate you, in my opinion. DEAR DR. ROACH: How is it that, at age 67, I’d never heard about the abomination called scabies? Last year, I was rubbing cream onto my aged mother’s rash, and now I have this disgusting infestation on my body! Why haven’t people been advised of this scourge! -- Anon. ANSWER: Scabies, sometimes just called, “the itch,” is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, and is very common, with an estimated 300

million people infected worldwide. It is transmitted person-to-person by direct contact. The major symptom of scabies is itching, often very severe and usually much worse at night. Itching begins about six weeks after the first infection, sooner if you have been infected before. Often, the hardest part is figuring out the diagnosis, because a lot of people don’t know about this condition. When the

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies” (PG-13) -- It’s the final installment of the extra-large trilogy about an extrasmall hero. Defeating the vicious dragon Smaug (voiced and motioncaptured by Benedict Cumberbatch) has vacated its big ol’ pile of gold, but now there’s some conflict over who gets to have a big ol’ pile of gold. Turns out that Thorin (Richard Armitage), leader of the heroic dwarves accompanying

Guy Ritchie made his reputation bringing cool, brassy style to low-level Brit gangsters, and he makes a cool retro style out of something that could have been laughably irrelevant. Since James Bond has grown kinda serious (but still awesome), this jaunt offers a lighter side to slick espionage. “Meru” (R) -- Ever wonder why people who climb Everest and other massive mountains tend to go up the easy side? For extreme climbers and best pals Jeremy Chin, Conrad Anker and Renan Ozturk, their dream was to scale the roughest side of them all, a sheer climb called the

About 15 minutes before duckling is done, brush with soy sauce, then honey; continue roasting until duckling is golden and tender. Serve duckling hot with Plantain Chips. (To serve duckling cold, cover and refrigerate duckling.) Serves 4. * Each serving: About 510 calories, 40g fat, 119mg cholesterol, 1,410mg sodium.

Fry a handful of plantain slices at a time, about 30 seconds, or until golden and crisp. With slotted spoon, remove slices to paper towels to drain. Sprinkle with salt. Repeat with remaining slices. 3. Since Plantain Chips are not served hot, it is not necessary to keep them warm. Store in tightly covered container at room temperature until ready to serve. Serves 4. * Each serving: About 250 calories, 11 g fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 70 mg sodium.

Shark’s Fin on Meru Peak in the Himalayas. They tried and failed once in 2008 -- but not for lack of grit. They were forced to quit 100 meters from the summit and retreat back to their tent -- not really a tent, but a dangly bag nailed to a furious mountain. This majestic documentary shows some of the most thrilling views that anyone has ever achieved, and explores what would drive them to try such a feat, and what would drive them to try it again a few years later. “Trash” (R) -- Three little boys living in a thirdworld garbage dump find a wallet that sets them on a high-stakes adventure with corrupt police at their heels. Rafael (Rickson Tevis) splits the

cash with his pals Rato and Gardo. Then the wallet yields a key that leads to further enticing clues. Martin Sheen and Rooney Mara help the boys as a beleaguered priest and burdened charity worker, respectively. The movie can generate some good feelings, but eventually too much sugary sentiment sprinkled over such squalid settings rings false. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Katie appreciated Bill’s new attitude about work. Ridge was concerned that Caroline’s pregnancy would become a greater focus in the media than their current designs. In a Forrester Creations staff meeting, Thomas made an uncensored outburst regarding the Spencer brothers’ positions within the company. Wyatt felt that Thomas’ opinion was triggered by something more personal than professional. Liam and Wyatt’s usually tense relationship was pushed aside as the brothers bonded over their common rival -- Thomas. Ridge and Caroline were bursting with joy as they prepared to see their baby on the sonogram. Nicole made her final decision about the surrogacy. Wait to

See: Jealousy causes tension in a relationship. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Hope and Aiden’s wedding day arrived. Abigail found herself in a dire situation with Ben. Some of Salem’s most prominent citizens made a toast to their beloved town -- and the late, great Tom and Alice. Bo raced against time to stop Hope from marrying Aiden. Adrienne was shaken when she witnessed Eve and Justin in a passionate embrace. Abigail struggled to escape from Ben, who continued to unravel. On the night of his wedding, a conflicted Aiden made a difficult decision. Steve and Bo arrived in Salem, but Hope’s fate likely was already sealed. Kayla was stunned when someone she loved was rushed to the hospital. Abe confronted Lani about the true reason she came to Salem. Wait to See: A fierce battle leads to a stunning death. GENERAL HOSPITAL Carly had a dangerous encounter after making a mind-blowing discovery. Kiki acted out after

learning about Morgan’s tryst. Lulu unleashed her fury on Dante. Patrick and Sam shared some sweet family time together. As Elizabeth started to get ready for her big day, Carly desperately tried to get a hold of Jake. Anna met her new doctor. Michael, Sonny and Jake began to panic about Carly. Morgan tried to be a good friend to Kiki after her wild night out. Nikolas reminded Laura of their secret. Ric helped Sonny with his custody dispute. Meanwhile, Scott advised an anxious Ava, who feared that she was going to lose baby Avery. Wait to See: Nina has a job interview. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Devon asked Paul if he should just accept Hilary’s death. Lily told Cane that he was too unpredictable and shouldn’t be around Charlie and Maddie. We’ll hold your tender memories deep in our hearts, Forever cherished, never to part. You were our dream, our hope and our joy, You are eternally our beloved boy. Our hearts ache in sadness and silent tears still flow, The loneliness without you no one will ever know. Our precious son, more precious than gold, Someday soon your loving face we’ll behold No more tears, no more pain, We’ll be together once again. You live forever in the hearts you touch, And you were loved so very, very much. Death after all is not the final end, But a passage that your soul transcends To a world of peace, joy and serenity, A haven of rest, a promise of immortality To a realm of light and beauty far above. Held by the everlasting arms of God. Immersed in His Love. Vincent, we love you, We miss you!!! Chai Jian! —Lovingly remembered and cherished by Dad, Mom, Riley, Uncles Kim and Seng, Auntie Ngok and Ruby, and cousins Poh Choo, Poh Hock, Eric, Brian, Diane, Florence and Kendra. Ben Bugoy We little knew that morning God was to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, You did not go alone. For part of us went with you The day God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, Your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. Always missed - forever loved, Helen, Rick & Natalie

HOLLYWOOD -In September, a U.S. District Court judge ruled that Warner/ Chappell Music had never acquired a valid copyright for the song “Happy Birthday. The melody was composed in 1893 by schoolteacher Patty Smith Hill and her sister Mildred. In 1935, the Summy Company registered a copyright for the lyrics. In 1988, the copyright, which was supposed to last until 2030, was bought by Warner/ Chappell for an estimated $5 million. Movie companies and TV shows using the song had to pay from $700 to $5,000 for its

use. To date it’s amassed an estimated $50 million. Almost every talkand magazine show sang the song after the ruling because they didn’t have to pay a royalty. But hold on ... Warner/ Chappell is appealing the ruling, and in eight

months it could be overturned. This verdict could trigger a meaningful review for production companies that own other copyrights on registrations made decades ago, before recordkeeping was computerized. Stay tuned, there’s a lot riding on this. CBS has a black eye today. The network has refused to run ads for the Robert Redford/Cate Blanchard film “Truth. Redford plays Dan Rather, who was fired by CBS for the “60 Minutes II story that questioned President George W. Bush’s Vietnam War-era commitment to serve in the Texas Air National Guard based on fake documents. CBS would “Rather it just go away to the tune of $l million

* It was beloved British crime novelist Agatha Christie who made the following sage observation: “It is a curious thought, but it is only when you see people looking ridiculous that you realize just how much you love them. * If you’ve ever yelled out a warning in panic --

“Stop!, “Run!, “Don’t! -- you’ve used a monepic sentence, one that is complete with just a single word. Of course, at the time you probably weren’t concerned about the grammatical nature of your utterance. * When in New Jersey, you’d best mind your manners at the table. In that state, it’s illegal to slurp your soup. * If you’re a sky-watcher, you may already know that the center star of the constellation Orion’s sword isn’t actually a star; it’s a nebula -- the only one visible from

Earth with the naked eye. In fact, the Orion Nebula is so large that if the distance between the Earth and the sun were 1 inch, the relative size of the nebula would be 12 miles. * If you were to create a rope out of one full head of human hair, that rope would be able to support 12 tons. * It’s a well-worn trope that men refuse to stop and ask for directions when they’re lost. That point of view might seem to be supported by the results of a survey conducted by the American

in ad revenue. “Hustler publisher Larry Flint says “Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner is “getting old, but I didn’t know he’s lost his mind! His comments were over Hefner’s decision to no longer feature totally nude photos in “Playboy. He adds, “How can you take the most important feature of your magazine and drop it ... what it became famous for? He asserts “Playboy is trying to be more like Maxim, GQ and Esquire. At least we’ll finally learn if the claim that men only buy “Playboy for the stories is true. Laverne Cox, the first Emmy-nominated transgender actress, will play Frank-N-Furter in the two-hour Fox TV reboot

of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The role created, both on stage and in the film, by Tim Curry has always been played men. “Rocky Horror airs later in 2016, following the Jan. 31 live reboot of “Grease. Laverne Cox also will appear in the CBS pilot “Doubt as a transgender attorney, a role especially created for her.

Automobile Association, which found that 34 percent of male drivers admit to stopping to ask for directions. However, the same survey found that only 37 percent of women did the same. * By the time he was 5 years old, 19th-centu-

Now that Daniel Craig is stepping down as 007, he’ll leave his James Bond image and signature martini behind. Craig will head off-Broadway to star in “Othello, with David Oyelowo. But the Bond persona will be hard to forget as audiences watch this violent Shakespeare play and are “shaken not stirred!

* You can cut the bitterness in some varieties of greens by soaking them in ice water for roughly an hour before serving. Use a salad spinner to get all of the water off. * To freshen carpets, there’s no need to purchase expensive or heavily perfumed carpet deodorizers -- baking soda can do the job. Sprinkle carpets liberally, let set for 30 minutes to an hour, and then vacuum thoroughly. * “If you host a large family holiday gathering and serve a lot of side dishes, try this trick to them hot while waiting for other items to finish in the oven. Simply cover the bottom of a clean ice chest with a few trivets or a couple kitchen towels, and set casseroles and oven-cooked meats inside. Most people use

a cooler to keep things cold, but the insulation works just as well to keep hot things hot ... at least for a little while. -- M.E. in West Virginia * Recipe substitution: If you need 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, use 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves. * Blood pressure can be affected by many things, and seeing the doctor is one of them. Instead, request that your blood pressure be taken by a nurse or physician’s assistant. Having a full bladder also can make your pressure reading higher, as can positioning your arm below heart level. * Remove the annoying sticky residue from price tags with WD-40 or baby oil. This is for use on hard surfaces only. If you are unsure, test in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure the oil doesn’t leave a stain where the tag was. Exercise enthusiasts know that an effective workout does not end with your last rep or final second on the treadmill. What you do upon finishing a workout can go a long way toward aiding your recovery and making your exercise routine that much more effective. During a workout, muscle and tissue can suffer some damage, and what men and women do after such workouts can determine whether their muscles recover in time for the next workout or they struggle to rebuild. The following are a handful of post-workout activities for athletes looking for safe ways to aid their body’s recovery. • Stretch. Stretching after a workout aids muscle recovery. During a

lengthy strength training workout, muscles contract quite often, leaving them in a shortened state at the end of your workout. If these muscles are not stretched once you complete your workout, you may suffer from stiffness and soreness later in the day or the following morning. Stretching helps the muscles return to their normal size, reducing the likelihood that you will suffer from stiffness and soreness while simultaneously kickstarting the body’s recovery process. • Rehydrate your body. Many people lose a considerable amount of fluid while exercising. Rehydrate the body with water after a workout so you do not suffer from symptoms of dehydra-

tion, which can include heart palpitations, muscle cramps and nausea. Avoid caffeinated beverages, including coffee and soda, after a workout, as caffeine promotes fluid loss. • Eat soon after working out. Eating high-quality protein soon after a workout aids muscle recovery and growth. A protein shake, some peanut butter spread on a brown rice cake or some low-fat yogurt can provide a potent helping of protein that helps the body recover and restore itself for your next workout. • Take time to rest between workouts. No matter how much energy you have after a workout, keep in mind that

your body needs time to rest and recover. Muscles typically need one to two full days to recover after a workout, which is why trainers and other exercise professionals advise against working the same muscle group two days in a row or twice in three days. Rest is a part of your body’s recovery process, so give your body at least 24 hours between workouts before you get back to working out. • Get adequate sleep. As noted, muscle and tissue may suffer from slight tears during strength training exercises. However, when you sleep your immune system goes to work repairing the body, including those small muscle and tissue tears that may have occurred during your

Peanut butter is a nutritious food that can be served in sandwiches, as a dip or as an ingredient for flavorful sauces. Peanut butter also can be enjoyed by the spoonful right out of the container. Post-workout pointers to aid quicker recovery

Workouts might be the focus of your fitness routine, but your postworkout behavior can go a long way toward determining the effectiveness of those workouts.

Did you know? aren’t nuts at all. They’re actually legumes. The National Peanut Board says that it takes about 540 peanuts to make a 12-ounce jar of peanut butter. The world’s largest peanut butter factory can produce 25,000 jars each day. That means millions of peanuts must be harvested and transformed to create those delicious jars of creamy and crunchy peanut butter.

If America has a team, it’s always going to be the best dressed. Or at least the one with the best color scheme. For your consideration, I offer the Dallas Cowboys. When you first think “Dallas Cowboys,” what is the first image that comes into your mind? Don’t wait for the translation. Just answer. It’s that blue star in the middle of a silver helmet. Then it’s the white jersey -- played home and away when handled correctly -- and a few icons at running back and quarterback. According to a new Harris Poll, the Dallas Cowboys are truly “America’s Team” once again. They are far and away the favorite among adults 30-64, Southerners, blacks and Hispanics. I never knew that they were not America’s team, but I can tell you that I know why they are.

1. The Martian (PG13) Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain 2. Goosebumps (PG) Jack Black, Dylan Minnette 3. Bridge of Spies (PG13) Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance 4. The Last Witch Hunter (PG-13) Vin Diesel, Rose Leslie 5. Hotel Transylvania 2 (PG) animated 6. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (R) Chris J. Murray, Brit Shaw 7. Steve Jobs (R) Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet 8. Crimson Peak (R) Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain 9. The Intern (PG-13) Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway 10. Sicario (R) Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro

Dallas is a great town. The Ticket, by the way, is the best sports-radio station in America, hands down. Any station that broadcasts “Michael Irvin’s School Closings” is far and away very very funny. Also, YouTube its Trump vs. Cuban debate. It only has a few thousand views, and that’s a shame. It’s an instant classic. Dallas is like a lot of cities, but unlike any other. It’s as if Atlanta and Kansas City had a big baby. It’s everything you think Texas is and less. It’s big and boisterous, but kind of polite when needed. It is positive and can-do (not Kansas City), but it also is truthful to your face and confident (not Atlanta). And it has the Cowboys. The Texas Rangers are not America’s team. The Dallas Stars aren’t even covered or discussed in San Antonio or Houston. The Dallas Mavericks are Germany’s favorite team, maybe. But the Cowboys regulate. So I conducted my own poll. I asked my mom what she thought when she thought of the Cowboys. “Cheerleaders” was her

reply. First answer on the board. Dad? “Staubach.” And he didn’t stop there. “They changed the name from ‘Dallas Cowgirls’ to ‘Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.’ How stupid was that? The Dallas Cowgirls were on the ‘Love Boat’ every week!” Equipped with the fact that the “Love Boat” was the highest attainment for anything, I called my sister. “I say Dallas Cowboys, you say what?” She says, “football.” I say, “OK, let’s try this again. Cowboys.” “Football,” she answers. My sister is a smart person. She eventually mutters some stuff about cheerleaders. I let her off the hook. Fine, America. If you want the Dallas Cowboys as your team, then know their heroes. “Dandy” Don Meredith, Roger Staubach, Drew Pearson, Tony Dorsett, “Too Tall” Jones, Terrapin Randy White, QB Danny White ... the Dallas Cowgirls ... Tom Landry. And don’t kid yourself. That team that wears a green, orange or purple ensemble? It’s not America’s team. The

5 ways to eco drive (NC) — Attention all drivers. The way you drive affects your fuel consumption, which in turn affects the amount of greenhouse gas emissions your vehicle emits into the atmosphere. By changing your driving habits, even a little, you could save hundreds of dollars a year in fuel and help reduce your CO2 emissions. The way to start is to eco-drive, a safer and greener way that produces the lowest fuel consumption from every vehicle, regardless of its size and age. Here are five tips to get you started from the experts at Natural Resources Canada: 1. Accelerate gently Every time you put your foot on the gas pedal, you feed fuel to your engine the harder you apply the gas, the more fuel your engine uses and the more greenhouse gas emissions your car produces; 2. Maintain a steady speed and stick to the speed limit - It’s tempting to speed on the highway but by reducing your speed from 120 km/hour to 100 km/hour you can

lower your fuel consumption by about 20 per cent; 3. Anticipate traffic flow - Try to gauge the flow of traffic, keep a buffer zone between you and the vehicles in front of you, and drive at a consistent speed. Speed fluctuations use more fuel; 4. Coast to decelerate - Coasting to a stop is like getting a free ride. When you notice that traffic ahead is slowing or stopped, remove your foot from the accelerator as soon as possible and coast instead of staying on the gas until the last second and slamming on the brakes. Your car uses little or no fuel when coasting. 5. EcoDriving can result in as much as a 25 per cent reduction in fuel costs or roughly $500 a year and $2,500 over five years for the average vehicle. Not only does eco-driving save fuel, but it also reduces maintenance costs. By following these few simple eco-driving tips, you can save fuel, reduce maintenance costs and reduce your environmental footprint.

Useful tools to carry in your vehicle during winter lighter would also be useful in such a case. Then there is the unavoidable shovel: you could always buy a small light shovel at any major store selling car maintenance products. At the same time, why not choose a set of those tough plastic traction bars that could help you get unstuck in deep snow. And if your car is older, it might be wise to keep a set of jumper cables in the trunk. Here is a smart object to keep in your trunk: a half-metre-squared piece of flat wood, such as plywood (but not pressed wood!). Why? Though most experts will tell you to keep the trunk of your car as empty as possible for optimal fuel economy, there are nevertheless some useful tools you should keep in the vehicle in case of an emergency. The first one is a small blanket that could come in handy should you be stuck in a snowstorm and wanting to save fuel. The foil survival blankets you can purchase at a hardware store are perfect for this, as they are very lightweight and fold up small. A candle and some matches or a
