Three-quarters of crop in the ground Seeding progress has doubled in the province thanks to relatively good conditions. Seventy per cent of the crop is now in the ground, up from 35 per cent last week and well ahead of the five-year (2013-2017) seeding average of 55 per cent for this time of year. The southeast region is the most advanced with 82

per cent of the crop seeded. Seventy-seven per cent is seeded in the northeast, 72 per cent in the southwest, 66 in the west-central region, 65 per cent in the northwest and 53 per cent in the east-central region. Rainfall was reported in some areas, ranging from trace amounts to 28 mm in the Biggar area. The majority of the prov-

ince remains in need of rain to replenish the topsoil moisture as warm temperatures and strong winds continue to dry fields. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on crop land are rated as 47 per cent adequate, 39 per cent short and 14 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 31 per cent

adequate, 46 per cent short and 23 per cent very short. Crops are slowly emerging but are mostly in good condition despite damage from strong winds and lack of moisture. The majority are either at or behind normal developmental stages for this time of year. Pastures and hay land remain dry and growth has been slow. Pasture condi-

tions are rated as 22 per cent good, 40 per cent fair, 28 per cent poor and 10 per cent very poor. SaskPower reports 34 cases of farm machinery contacting electrical equipment in the last week, bringing the total in May to 119. SaskPower reminds producers that most farm-related incidents happen during the

spring. Please check for overhead power lines and plan ahead when moving equipment. More safety information is available at www.saskpower.com/ safety. A complete, printable version of the Crop Report is available online at . Follow the 2018 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture.

Young workers should be aware of rules As young people wrap up the school year and start applying for summer jobs, they should remember to look into the employment and safety rules that apply to young workers. Most importantly, 14- and 15-year-old workers need to have their Young Worker Readiness Certificate Course (YWRCC) Certificate of

Completion before they can enter the workforce. The course teaches young workers about their rights and responsibilities in the workplace. Students will learn the basics about employment standards and workplace health and safety. “Although this information is useful for anyone, it is targeted towards

young people getting ready to start their first job,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said. “We want young workers to feel comfortable enough to ask questions when they don’t understand what is expected of them and refuse work they feel is unsafe.” Young workers may

apply for jobs and go for interviews before completing the course. They may not start work until they have provided their employer with a copy of their Certificate of Completion. Young workers must also provide written consent from their parent or guardian. Employers are required to keep certificates and par-

ental consent on file. Young workers are only allowed to work limited hours during the school year. They are also not permitted to work in certain industries under Occupational Health and Safety regulations. More than 7,800 people received their Certificate of Completion between

April 2017 and March 2018. The Employment Standards Division of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety also delivered two webinars for teachers who use the YWRCC in the classroom. To learn more about the YWRCC or to take the online course, please visit www.saskatchewan.ca/ ywrcc.

Digital X-ray upgrades in five rural hospitals X-ray equipment in five rural community hospitals is being upgraded from film to digital images, supporting quicker diagnosis and improved care for patients. “Our government is committed to improving access to high-quality medical imaging across Saskatchewan,” Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “Digital images save time for physicians and patients, and result in patients receiving their x-ray results quicker than ever before.” The Saskatchewan Health Authority is in the process of digitalizing the x-ray equipment in Lanigan, Rosthern, Wadena, Watrous and Wynyard. It is anticipated that full implementation, including equipment upgrades and renovations,

will be complete in fall 2018. Digital images can be quickly shared between physicians and specialists across the province. A diagnostic interpretation by a radiologist can then be provided within minutes. This eliminates the need to transport film images to be read by a radiologist, which can take days. “This technology investment is an important step for Saskatchewan Health Authority as we begin to fulfill the vision of better co-ordination of health care services across the province,” Saskatchewan Health Authority CEO Scott Livingstone said. “As one organization, our intent is to improve systems so employees and physicians can focus on what they do best, which is patient care and sup-

port. By improving access to medical imaging, we are on the right path of ensuring our province’s hospitals are able to coordinate their services to ensure patients receive highquality, timely health care, closer to home.” The Government of Saskatchewan contributed $500,000 to upgrade x-ray equipment from analog radiography to digital radiography in these five sites. The remaining $500,000 in matching funding (approximately $100,000

per site) was provided by local health foundations to cover the costs associated with the equipment upgrade, infrastructure and renovations. “Strong community support helps our health system meet the need for specialized services across Saskatchewan,” Ottenbreit said. “Our government thanks the local communities, and their respective health foundations, whose generosity is helping make these digital x-ray upgrades a reality.”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An apparent act of injustice might turn out to be either an error in judgment or just plain stupidity. So calm down and cool off, and let the explanations roll out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s upsetting when someone you trusted might have failed you. But with new opportunities ahead, you’ll soon be too busy to feel even a wee bit sorry for yourself. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A sense of uncertainty could be a good reason to change your position on an important matter. Someone close might try to talk you out of it, but it’s your decision to make. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Being too zealous in pursuing your goal could create some resistance. Try to be more mindful of what you ask people to do, and they’ll be more likely to do it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Things change as you go from being ignored to being Lionized once again. This is a good time to reintroduce those previously rejected ideas to a more receptive audience. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone new in your life creates both anticipation as well as anxiety. Avoid the potential for misunderstandings by watching what you say and how you say it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch your budget so that you don’t overspend now and have less to invest when the time is right later on. Arrange to

share your weekend with someone special. SCORPIO (October 23 to

November 21) The temptation to involve yourself in a friend’s or family member’s personal problems is laudable. But get the facts before you make a firm commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be upset by some of your critics. But most of your associates continue to keep the faith

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Game Night” (R) — Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams star as Max and Annie, an ultracompetitive and sweet couple who host a regular game night with their circle of friends — snappy duo Michelle and Kevin (Kylie Bunbury and Lamorne Morris), Ryan (Billy Magnussen) with date Sarah (Sharon Horgan) and Max’s bigger, better, realer brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler). The sibling rivalry is not subtle, and Brooks decides to one-up the game by hosting an interactive mystery

experience at his swanky pad. It’s all fun and games until there’s an assault and kidnapping. When Brooks is dragged away in real life, Max and Annie go off the board to track him down and solve the mystery. This clever action comedy didn’t get the credit it deserved in theaters, and it makes a great watch for your gathering of friends, competitive or no. “Red Sparrow” (R) — Sporting a nifty Russian accent, Jennifer Lawrence stars as prima ballerina Dominika Egorova, who must find a new means of survival for herself and her sick mother after suffering an injury. She is lured into a sordid job by her uncle Ivan (Matthias Schoenaerts), a Russian Intelligence officer, in exchange for medical care

Pre-addressed, stamped postcards sent by college students from around the country find their way back to Nancy Cripe’s kitchen in Minnesota throughout the school year. Even an old and tattered postcard recently arrived from a UCLA graduate student with the three-word message, “Is this expired?” “Cookie cards never expire,” replied the highschool biology and human anatomy and physiology teacher at Minnehaha

Academy in Minneapolis. Nancy’s “cookie cards” have become her unique high-school graduation gift-giving tradition. At the end of each academic year, she receives numerous invitations to her science students’ graduation open-house parties. A few years ago, she decided to change up how she honored their achievement, by giving something personal that is a little taste from home when they feel far away — in the form of home-baked chocolate chip cookies. Like a monetary gift card with dollar amounts for purchases at stores and restaurants, her cookie postcard can be redeemed for one dozen home-baked cookies. “Not surprisingly, that’s usually during their final exam

Director Clint Eastwood clearly believes in the story, and he should: These men performed outstanding acts of bravery and character, but unfortunately, it’s critically apparent that they are not actors, and it’s a real bummer, because what a great story. words of blessing and inspiration printed on one side. On the left half of the reverse side, she prints this message in the high school’s colors:

When she receives the postcard, she bakes the cookies (she has a large quantity of cookie dough shaped into balls and frozen to bake a dozen on a moment’s notice) and packs them carefully in a plastic bag wrapped with bubble wrap to fit the smallest U.S. mail flat rate box. She includes a handwritten greeting, and sends it off. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Her latest book is “Donna Erickson’s Fabulous Funstuff for Families.”

“Congratulations on your Graduation! When you’re away at college and need some extra inspiration to help you study (especially science!), just send me this postcard and homemade cookies will soon be on their way to you!”

This personalized gift idea can work for a graduating grandchild, friend, niece or nephew, too. You even might wish to give several cookie-card postcards to be redeemed quarterly or monthly. Here’s how she does it: She designs the postcards with images and

Below the message are four lines where the student writes his or her college address, along with a space for jotting a note to her. On the right half, she prints her home address and adds a postage stamp. The postcard is tucked inside a graduation card.

More technologically advanced Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) interrupts this idyllic reverie with his Bronze Age war elephants, and through a hilarious accidental interchange, Dug is dropped into the middle of a soccer game in Nooth’s city. A challenge is made and accepted that Dug’s tribe will play Nooth’s ringers with the promise that if Dug wins, his valley will be spared. “15:17 to Paris” (PG-13) — In August 2015, a man on a train from Amsterdam to Paris opened fire on his fellow passengers. Lake Of The Prairies - North 61.5 sq. km.

L

ake of the Prairies is a large, long lake situated in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Originally, the lake was created as a water storage lake to manage the risk of flooding elsewhere. A great fishery has been an added bonus. Lake of the Prairies supports a high quality walleye fishery. Aside from the various perch, pike, bass, and carp, the big draw of the lake is walleye. In fact, Lake of the Prairies is now considered the second largest fishery in Manitoba, and one of the best walleye fisheries in Canada. John Boyd, from For Your Walleyes Only, says that how you fish Lake of the Prairies will change depending on several factors. “How and what to use depends on the time of year and weather conditions,” he advises. If it’s windy, while it may not be ideal conditions for anglers, it’s perfect for walleye. They’re far more active in wavy water, and in anything murky. They’re very sensitive to light, and wind, sediment and low light conditions are easier for them to manage. Boyd says that on windy days, bottom bouncers and spinners with leeches or night crawlers are good. That’s not to say that walleye can’t be caught on calm days. “On a calm day, trolling using Rapellas can be an option,” Boyd suggests. “I prefer vertical jigging using 1/8 oz chartreuse, orange, green or pink jigs with frozen minnows, leeches or crawlers.”

Unknown

425 metres (1,394 feet)

Boyd notes that underwater factors are important, too. “Structure plays a key role, and at Lake of the Prairies you have some great options.” Boyd has a few favourite spots for setting up for the day. He suggests that the Roblin Bridge is a good spot from May to June, but warns anglers to be careful of snags under the bridge. “The hydro lines south of the bridge have been known to be a good spot from May to July,” he adds. Boyd also likes a spot down the lake towards Pyotts, which he says fishes well in July and August. Also, north, by Togo Bridge, seems to be good from May to the end of June, he says. While walleye are the most popular target, they are by no means the only fish here.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My granddaughter rescued a scrawny, 4-month-old kitten that was covered with fleas and ear mites. We nursed “Pickles” back to health, and he’s now a healthy 9-month-old kitten. The problem is that Pickles will not stay off our table, counters, appliances, cabinets, etc. — the higher, the better. Even a clock on the wall! He will get down when we tell him, but turn your back and he’s

right up there again. I’ve tried everything. We bought him a climbing pole with ledges; he ignores it. I’ve tried squirting him with a spray bottle, or by giving him a reward when he listens. We put tacky strips on the counters, and crumbled aluminum foil and wax paper. Nothing works. Help! — Charlene B., via email DEAR CHARLENE: Pickles sounds like a wonderful cat, if a real handful! Most healthy cats love jumping up to higher perches — it’s a natural instinct. And it’s clear that Pickles is very healthy and comfortable with his new home. How do you balance keeping Pickles happy and keeping him off the dinner

table? The play perch is good — try putting it into a different location, perhaps where sunbeams fall across it. Help him associate it with good things by placing a favorite treat on the perch while calling him. Purchase a window perch or a wall-mounted perch you can put up really high. Meantime, keep searching for a “warning” noise he responds to. Sometimes just a hiss will work. Shaking a coffee can filled with coins may work. Use the same warning noise each time, so that he associates the noise with “get off.” Training may take time, but be patient. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Steffy told Liam the name she chose for her unborn child. Wyatt was resentful of his father’s sudden appreciation of him, but Katie reminded him that this was what he always wanted. Ridge

fiercely defended his daughter to Brooke and Hope. Steffy made a final plea to Liam to stay with her for the sake of the baby. The Logan sisters came together to help Hope get ready for her wedding day. Taylor arrived at Steffy’s house outraged to learn that Hope and Liam were getting married already. Justin tried to convince Bill that Steffy was committed to Liam and that no matter what rewards he gave Wyatt, he might crack anyway and tell Liam the truth. DEAR DR. ROACH: I was wondering what adult vaccines should be given to enhance the immune system, in addition to improving sleep and diet. — P.P. ANSWER: Our bodies’ immune systems are designed to protect us from outside invaders (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) as well as internal errors (cancers), and they are very effective at doing so. Unfortunately, the germs and abnormal growths also are skilled at avoiding our immune systems, so there is a constant struggle going on. Giving your body proper nutrition and rest, and managing stress help your immune system perform at its best. Vaccines improve your body’s ability to fight off

particular infections, increasing your immunity to very specific bacteria and viruses. The vaccines that are generally recommended for healthy adults are: —Flu vaccine (yearly); —Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis once, then tetanus/diphtheria every 10 years; —Human papillomavirus (three doses, up to age 26); —Zoster, the shingles vaccine (once after age 60); —Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13 once, PPSV23 once or twice). Depending on the person’s past history and risk factors, other vaccines — including the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine; meningococcal vaccine; hepatitis A and B vaccines; and haemophilus vaccine — also may be recommended. This may seem like a trivial concern in comparison to some of the matters you address in your column, but it is a concern of mine. My spouse passes gas throughout the night. He claims that he is asleep and unaware of any problems. I say that this is a voluntary activity and that he should be able to control it. Who is right? — D.B. ANSWER: He is. Passing gas while asleep is entirely involuntary. You probably are doing so also while asleep. If you are really bothered by his intestinal gas, then you can work on some dietary changes, including avoiding carbonated beverages and limiting foods that commonly cause the intestinal bacteria to produce gas, such as beans, bran, cauliflower and cabbage. In some people, excess gas production can be a sign of mild lactose intolerance. DEAR DR. ROACH: Let’s not shake hands, period. Doctors seem determined to shake hands. ing hands. In the ICU, I, another patient and several visitors were visited by several doctors, who came in and had to shake hands with everyone. I did not notice whether they cleaned up. — L.F.

ANSWER: I understand what you are saying, but I am not ready to recommend giving up shaking hands. I can understand not shaking hands with visitors in an ICU, but if I am going to be examining a patient, it’s polite to shake hands. Of course, I wash my hands before and after every exam, and hospitalized patients and their visitors should wash their hands frequently as well.

food label and ingredients list contain information about added sugars, saturated fat, sodium and calories to help you make better choices.

I try to drink the recommended amount of water each day, but sometimes I want a healthy alternative. What you drink is as important as what you eat. Many beverages contain added sugars and offer little or no nutrients, while others may provide nutrients but too much fat and too many calories. Here are some tips from myplate.gov to help you make better beverage choices. Drink water Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Regular soda, energy or sports drinks, and other sweet drinks usually contain a lot of added sugar, which provides more calories than needed. How much water is enough? Let your thirst be your guide. Water is an important nutrient for the body, but everyone’s needs are different. Most of us get enough water from the foods we eat and the beverages we drink. A healthy body can balance water needs throughout the day. Drink plenty of water if you are very active, live or work in hot conditions, or are an older adult. A thrifty option Water is usually easy on the wallet. You can save money by drinking water from the tap at home or when eating out. Manage your calories Drink water with and between your meals. Adults and children take in about 400 calories per day as beverages — drinking water can help you manage your calories. Kid-friendly drink zone Make water, low-fat or fat-free milk, or 100 percent juice an easy option in your home. Have readyto-go containers filled with water or healthy drinks available in the refrigerator. Put them in lunch boxes or backpacks for easy access when kids are away from home. Depending on age, children can drink 1/2 to 1 cup, and adults can drink up to 1 cup of 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice each day. Don’t forget your dairy When you choose milk

or milk alternatives, select low-fat or fat-free milk or fortified soymilk. Each type of milk offers the same key nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D and potassium, but the number of calories are very different. Older children, teens and adults need 3 cups of milk per day, while children ages 4 to 8 need 2-1/2 cups and children 2 to 3 years old need 2 cups. Enjoy your beverage When water just won’t do: Enjoy the beverage of your choice, but just cut back. Remember to check the serving size and the

Try this healthy recipe for a Citrus Coconut Water Refresher. It’s a delicious way to incorporate fresh fruit juices and the nutritious benefits of coconut water into your daily diet. Coconut water is the juice found naturally in the center of a young, green coconut. It contains 94 percent water and very little fat. The water is freshest when it comes directly from the coconut. Simply press a straw into the soft

part of a green coconut and start drinking. Store the coconut in the refrigerator and consume it within two to three weeks of purchase. You also can buy bottled coconut water at most grocery stores. Be sure to read the ingredient list to make sure you’re getting 100 percent coconut water. Some bottled brands contain added sugar or flavoring. Research has shown that coconut water can lower blood sugar levels and improve other health markers in diabetic animals, guard against the development of kidney stones, reduce cholesterol levels and liver fat, reduce blood pressure levels and blood clots. It also restores hydration and replenishes electrolytes lost during exercise. CITRUS COCONUTWATER REFRESHER •2 cups coconut water •1/4 cup lemon juice,

Place all of the ingredients except the sliced fruit into a blender and blend until well-incorporated. Serve with citrus slices. Makes 2 to 4 servings.
