cannot be bothered to try and give yourself some preparatory thoughts of what you might do should such a scenario arise. For those of you whom this topic has peaked some interest, you are about to embark on a fun adventure in learning just what the region around can provide for sustenance and your survival. The food is fresher, always costs less, strengthens families and businesses close to you, builds a network of people who can provide a bigger base of products that you need or enjoy, and can show you other ways you could provide for others and possibly generate income as well. Bartering will greatly increase saving you money and unnecessary taxes, and did I mention that it is fun? Ok then I will mention it, it is very fun to get out and taste what is local! Here’s an example: If you buy potatoes from
the store the best price is only when they are on sale, maybe fifty cents per pound. They were harvested early, travelled at least 1000 miles and in my opinion do not taste that great. But upon asking friends and relatives in my community, found potatoes that were cheaper, harvester at the right time, travelled 30 miles, and tasted like they already had butter and cream inside! People find the most amazing berries in the bush, someone sells chicken that was raised down the road, or others who gladly want their produce to be part of your healthy diet. So please support your local producers, unless you like canned tomatoes from across the ocean. Have you ever heard of the 100 mile diet? It has nothing to do with losing weight, though I am sure that’s an effect it will have on your body anyway. Let me ask you a question, when I bought a jar of pickles the other day and the label said Made in India --- why are those pickles sold here in Saskatchewan? Can we not make quality pickles in our province? And how far did those cucumbers you buy have to come to get to you today? 100 miles — no, 500 miles — no, maybe a 1000 miles or more. In a world where shipping items is quite easy, it has been clearly shown to us now that we have lost a crucial local supply chain. In the 100 mile diet you pledge to only buy and eat products that fall within a 100 mile radius around your home. Let me tell you why this is so important to challenge yourself with this: If shipping costs have to rise sharply, what happens to the price of your food? If the shipments were stopped or prevented from coming tomorrow, where does your food supply come from? I would strongly ask you at least challenge yourself with thinking about this if you

Tips on becoming a super saver If you were to rate your money savings abilities on a scale of one to 10, where would you be? Would you be average with a score of seven? Or, are you above-average because you have a huge nest egg and very little debt? Or would you be low on the scale because as with most Canadians you’re carrying a lot of debt and have a little savings? If you fall into this last category, here are some tips on how your can become a Super Saver. Identify your goals: Where will you be ďŹ nancially in ďŹ ve, 10, 20 years: eating pâtĂŠ or cat food? Seriously consider what you want and start putting your ďŹ nancial house in order.
Laurie Renton Justine Lutz Financial Advisors LR Future Insurance and Investments #7 Broadway Street W. Yorkton, SK S3N 0L3 Phone: 306.783.7737
Set up your savings plan: You may think you have very little extra money at the end of the month, but you may be surprised. Revisit your spending habits and cut back on those incidental and impulse buys. You may ďŹ nd that there is enough to put away for a rainy day and retirement, even if it’s just $5 a month. Next, create a preauthorized savings program to automatically deposit the money into a TFSA and/or RRSP account. Remember the power of compounding interest and you’ll quickly feel empowered. Also, ďŹ nd out if your company offers a group RRSP. This is a great way to become a Super Saver since your company will subtract your contribution off each pay before taxes. You end up paying less tax, which also reduces the sting at tax time. Protect your investment: Would you be able to support your family and meet your ďŹ nancial responsibilities if you were in an accident or fell ill? A term insurance policy is an ideal solution because it’s inexpensive and it will meet your short-term needs. “Mutual funds distributed through Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. for insurance products, Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. acts as a National Life Insurance Brokerage Agency.â€?

Close Cuts for Cancer kicks off campaign By Devin Wilger N-R Writer
Brayden Ottenbreit’s Close Cuts for Cancer is seeing a couple changes for the 2016 campaign, which kicked off at Yorkton Hyundai on April 29. The first change will be where the money goes. Funds raised by Close Cuts will continue to go to cancer research, but will now be used to support the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. Leone Ottenbreit, event cofounder and organizer, says that they were impressed by what they have been doing in the province, including leading edge cancer research at the University of Saskatchewan. “We always want to keep our money as local as possible.” The second, and most visible, change for the event will be the “Close Cuts Mobile,” a 2016 Hyundai Tuscon provided by Yorkton Hyundai. Rapid progress seeding Seeding progress continues to rapidly advance thanks to warm and dry weather. Saskatchewan producers now have 35 per cent of the crop in the ground. The five-year (2011-2015) seeding average for this time of year is 10 per cent, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Seeding is most advanced in the southwest, where producers have 58 per cent of the crop seeded. Fifty-one per cent of the crop is seeded in the southeast; 26 per cent in the westcentral region; 23 per cent in the northeast; 21 per cent in the northwest; and 17 per cent in the
east-central region. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as two per cent surplus, 74 per cent adequate, 21 per cent short and three per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 61 per cent adequate, 32 per cent short and six per cent very short. Many areas of the province did not receive rain last week; however, significant rain received earlier this week in much of the province will help alleviate concerns in some areas about dry topsoil moisture conditions. Ron Kaban, Dealer Principal at Yorkton Hyundai, says that they wanted they thought it was a program to support because cancer has affected so many people within the community. “I think we’ve all been affected by cancer one way or another. I lost my father with cancer, my sister had two bouts fighting cancer, thank god she’s alive and well.” The donation of the vehicle was also a way to help the organizing team, as Kaban felt that it was the best way their business could assist Ottenbreit in organizing the event. “She’s such a hard working woman and this was a way to help her out.” There will be several events over the next month as part of the Close Cuts campaign. Richardson Pioneer becomes Title Sponsor
Richardson Pioneer, a division of Richardson International Limited, Canada’s largest agribusiness is proud to partner as the Title Sponsor for the formerly titled Milligan Creek Men’s Fastball League. In its inaugural season, the Richardson Pioneer Men’s Fastball League features six teams in East Central Saskatchewan. The league not only offers an opportunity for area men to play, it gives high school kids a chance to play with a lack of minor softball leagues in the area. The Wadena Wildcats and Fishing Lake Mariners are completely made up of 19 and under boys, in addition to some younger players on Wynyard and Foam Lake. The only other option for those boys is to play against Bantam and Midget aged teams with the closest being PA, Saskatoon and Regina.
“We are pleased to support this league and help give high school students and adults the opportunity to play fastball in their community,” says Carter Kolybaba, Director of Operations for Richardson Pioneer Wadena. “It’s having activities like this that make our communities thrive.” The Richardson Pioneer Men’s Fastball League consists of the Foam Lake Merchants, Fishing Lake Mariners, Fishing Lake Cubs, Wadena Wildcats, Rosebud Royals (Wadena), and Wynyard Blues. League President James Holowaty said “This partnership with Richardson Pioneer will allow the league to offer an opportunity to play in an organized league for years to come.” R i c h a r d s o n International is proud to be truly invested in
Canadian agriculture. Recognized as a global leader in agriculture and food processing, Richardson is a worldwide handler and merchandiser of all major Canadian-grown grains and oilseeds and a vertically-integrated processor and manufacturer of oats and canolabased products. One of Canada’s Best Managed Companies, Richardson is headquartered in Winnipeg and has over 2,500 employees across Canada and the U.S.

Hay share calculator developed Lorne Klein, PAg Regional forage Specialist, Weyburn Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture
Landowners who have seeded and established perennial forage stands have several options for marketing the crop. One option is to sell the standing crop to a tenant for baling. A common arrangement is that the tenant and landlord will each keep a portion of the bales. The question then becomes “What is a fair split of the baled hay?”
The Ministry of Agriculture has developed a Hay Share Calculator that helps determine the hay share split, based on costs incurred by both the landlord and the tenant. Costs for the landlord include forage seed, field preparation, weed control, seeding, land rent and annual nutrient removal of the baled crop. The cost of nutrient removal can be estimated from the Ministry of Agriculture calculator “Forage and Crop Nutrient Value Calculator”. Costs for the tenant include cutting and baling. Other items to load into the calculator are
expected average hay yield and years life expectancy of the stand. Learning to operate the calculator is relatively simple with a minimal amount of instruction or coaching. Once you are comfortable with the operation of the calculator, you can easily run multiple scenarios with different costs for the tenant and landlord. The calculator immediately generates a hay share split with each scenario. The calculator has a second feature that helps determine a price for standing forage. The
biggest challenge with this feature is determining what the selling price of the baled hay will be. The costs of cutting and baling are relatively constant from year to year. The price of baled hay can be quite variable from year to year. This calculation will help the landlord determine whether they should sell the crop standing, or custom hire the cutting and baling to retain ownership of the bales. Another option of selling a forage stand is to sell it for grazing. This option requires an investment in fence and a
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am so tired of gastric juices coming up and spraying my mouth. I am currently on a “last resort” medicine. My doctor wants to try it for three weeks. If it doesn’t work, he’s going to perform a Nissen fundoplication. From what I’ve read, there would be nothing more coming up. Could you explain this procedure? What will happen with swallowed air, and what will happen if I get
sick to my stomach and (shudder) need to vomit? — S.S. ANSWER: Large volumes of stomach acid coming into the mouth is an accepted indication for surgical treatment of reflux disease. Sometimes, the acid is associated with excess saliva and is called “water brash.” Prior to considering surgery, it is worthwhile to make sure the medication treatment is as good as it can be. Proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole should be taken 30 minutes before eating. Weight loss is helpful if overweight. Raising the head of the bed 6 to 8 inches (by inserting blocks under the legs of the head of
the bed or using a plastic wedge under the mattress) and avoiding dietary triggers (coffee, chocolate, carbonated drinks, high-fat foods) should be tried. Baclofen, a powerful muscle relaxant with many possible side effects, may be the “last resort” medicine you are taking. When all else fails, surgery may relieve symptoms. A Nissen fundoplication is when the upper part of the stomach, the fundus, is plicated (wrapped) around the esophagus and stitched in place. This can be done via endoscopy or as an open procedure. It is effective at reducing symptoms in 85 percent to 90 percent of patients. Most people are
unable to vomit and have less or no ability to belch, leading to bloating, increased intestinal gas and flatulence. Discomfort during eating is common. There are modifications of the surgical procedure designed to reduce side effects and complications while maintaining effectiveness, but a description of what these all are technically is in your surgeon’s domain. Readers: The booklet on Acid Reflux, Heartburn and Hiatal Hernia explains these common gastrointestinal disorders in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 501W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a

water source. Depending upon livestock numbers, livestock size, length of grazing season and grazing fee, you can calculate a value for each ton of forage grazed. Compared to hay removal where all of the nutrients in the hay are exported, grazing animals deposit about 90% of the nutrients they consume back to the land in their manure and urine. For more information on pricing and marketing forage crops, contact Lorne Klein at 306-848-2382 or the Agriculture Knowledge Centre at 1-866-4572377.

ROACH: I have been riding my bike outdoors, same saddle, 130 miles a month for over three years. Out of the blue my left sit bone, or the tissue around it, is so sore. I can’t quit riding — HELP! — A.D.C. ANSWER: A good rule of thumb for an athletic injury or sudden soreness is that resting it for a period of time usually is a good idea. Get off the bike for a while and try some different types
of exercising: walk, run, swim or lift weights, but give your soft tissues a chance to recover. You may simply have overdone it. If things don’t get better, go ahead and make an appointment to get checked out. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. what they have in store. Regarding the explosive season finale, she told me: “The Powell Mansion literally ends — it exploded. I think it’s a great metaphor for what happens to Evelyn. The world she is used to is gone; you’ll watch her go on a surprising and new journey this season. Adrian went back into the house to get a prized family portrait of Adrian, Evelyn and Barrett. Whether he’s dead or alive, Adrian Powell looms large in season four. You’ll find out in the beginning of the season; it’s worth tuning in for, for sure.” Rebecca also told me:
“You will definitely see a new side of Evelyn. There will be some struggles of identity, and she will go on a journey this year that you wouldn’t have expected. The very things that define her will be taken away. She’ll develop a friendship with Marisol. You’ll see a lot more of that this year; I think people really enjoy Evelyn and Marisol together. And there will be a new man for Evelyn before the end of the season. Q: I was enthralled by the Fox series “Wayward Pines” last year. Will that be back? — Louie F., via email A: Season two of
opening on all four sides of the carton about an inch up from the base. For a bird perch, poke a small hole below a side opening. Poke a matching hole into the opposite side of the carton, then insert one of the dowels through both small holes. Make a hole and poke the other skewer through the top side edge of the feeder for the shish kebab. (If using a dowel, sharpen one end with a pencil sharpener.) For the time being, rest that end inside the feeder until you are ready to thread food on it. To hang the feeder, poke a hole in the top middle of the carton and loop a piece of wire or twine through the hole. It’s time to decorate. Using a low-temperature glue gun or household glue and brush, start applying twigs, pieces of bark, dried pods, leaves, etc., wherever your imagination says they belong.
You might add trinkets or a silk flower if the space seems right. For the shish kebab, reach through a side opening of the feeder and thread the fruit and bread chunks on the skewer, then poke the end at an angle in an inside corner of the carton. Pour some birdseed onto the base of the feeder, if you wish. Hang from a tree or bird feeder stand. As birds come to your feeder, identify them, take pictures and talk about your sightings. Fox’s trippy sci-fi mystery series returns May 25 with a new set of characters coming to town, along with a few familiar faces. The show’s new protagonist, Dr. Theo Yedlin (Jason Patric), has to figure out what is really going on in Wayward Pines, which is now under the control of Jason Higgins (played by Tom Stevens). Other co-stars include Djimon Hounsou as CJ Mitchum, Hope Davis returning as Megan Fisher, Nimrat Kaur as Rebecca Yedlin, Kacey Rohl as Kerry Campbell and Josh Helman as Xander. Q: I read that after “Downton Abbey,” the actress who played

A: Michelle Dockery and Juan Diego Botto star in the new TNT drama “Good Behavior.” No premiere date has been released, but it was not announced in TNT’s summer lineup, so I’d look for it come fall. The series is based on the novellas by Blake Crouch about con artist Letty Dobesh (played by Michelle).

Join us for our festival kickoff on Thursday, May 26 at the Parkland Room of the Painted Hand Casino. Join us for a screening of “The Sabbatical.” Directed by Regina based filmmaker Brian Stockton, “The Sabbatical” tells the story of James Pittman, a burnt-out photography professor who goes on sabbatical and straight into a mid-life crisis. When a young artist named Lucy comes into his life and he tries desperately to recapture the lost spirit of his youth. The film has had a remarkable reception and opening run, with screenings taking place around the world, and the Yorkton Film Festival is proud to present this Saskatchewan production as our opening night film.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Finest Hours” (PG-13) — When their oil tanker is ripped in half by raging waves off Cape Cod, the crew of the SS Pembleton has only a few hours left before what remains of their vessel sinks. Chief engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) has to improvise to keep the half-boat afloat, while rallying a crew growing more desperate by the moment. The Coast Guard already has its hands full, leaving the near-suicidal rescue mission up to Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) and a couple
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Home conditions still demand attention. Also, keep an open mind about a sudden question of trust involving a close friend. All the facts are not yet in. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) With summer just around the corner, travel begins to dominate your sign. Make plans care-
of other volunteers in a tiny boat pointed straight toward 70-foot waves. It’s a based-on-a-true story produced by Disney, detailing an incredible 1952 rescue mission. The movie follows the conventions typical of disasterrescue movies, but does so with excellent pacing and deployment of CG effects. The characters
don’t show a huge range of emotion, but the leads (including Webber’s sweetheart, played by Holliday Grainger) still manage to show some depth of feeling in their lines and looks. “Risen” (PG-13) — This rather gritty faith-based film tells the story of the execution and resurrection of Jesus (he’s called Yeshua here) from the perspective of a cynical centurion trying to lay down the law. Joseph Fiennes stars as Clavius, a Roman soldier tasked by Pontius Pilate (Peter Firth) with keeping Christ’s body locked up, and then relocating it when it disappears. Clavius and his sidekick Lucius (Tom Felton) have to Sherlock their way through Judea, interro-
gating witnesses, including Mary Magdalene (Maria Botto). Clavius eventually finds the body, but not in the way he expected. The movie works by giving us a hero with actual layers, well-handled by Fiennes. Clavius is jaded and weary, but still intense and committed to fulfilling his duty. More than just a sequence of sermons, there is actual excitement and character development attending the story’s intended conclusion. “How to be Single” (R) — Alice (Dakota Johnson) dumps her college boyfriend and movies to the Big City to figure herself out, mostly by dating and partying, and taking lessons in dating and partying from
Robin (Rebel Wilson), her wild-and-crazy coworker. Distractingly wedged into this narrative are the stories of two more women on the Your-Life-is-Defined-byDating spectrum: Alice’s career-focused big sis (Leslie Mann), learning to be wooed by a younger man, and poor sweet Lucy (Alison Brie), who keeps reeling in oddballs from her sea of dating apps. Like an unhealthy relationship, this movie snipes at the hokey cliches in rom-coms, but is clearly dependent on them and knows no other way. “Zoolander 2” (R) — Fifteen years after foiling an assassination, the world’s most vapid supermodel, Derek Zoolander (writer/director/star Ben

Spice, a friend to fans of flavor
Many people on lowsodium diets find cooking with spices is a great way to add some flavor to their meals without betraying their diets. But cooking with spice is a great way for all people to add flavor and experiment in the kitchen. Perhaps no ethnic cuisine is more associated with spices than Indian food. Some people love their Indian food to pack a potent, temperatureraising kick, while others prefer more subtle dishes in which the spices add flavor without creating a four-alarm fire in their mouths. Cooks
who want to experiment with spice in their kitchens can try the following recipe for “Fried Green Beefâ€? from India native Ruta Kahate’s “5 Spices, 50 Dishesâ€? (Chronicle Books). FRIED GREEN BEEF Serves 4 •2 pounds London broil (inside round) •2-1â „2 cups coarsely chopped, tightly packed, rinsed cilantro leaves and tender stems (about 1 bunch) •2 medium green serrano chiles, coarsely chopped •2-1â „2 tablespoons
lemon juice •2 tablespoons water •1-1⠄2 teaspoons finely grated fresh ginger (about 3-inch piece) •1 teaspoon finely grated garlic (about 2 large cloves) •1 teaspoon salt •1⠄4 teaspoon ground turmeric •1⠄4 teaspoon cumin seeds, finely ground •1⠄2 cup or more canola oil •1 cup rava, semolina or cream of wheat (not the quick-cooking kind) (see note) Ask your butcher to slice the meat into 1⠄2-
inch thick slices. When you get home, lay the slices between sheets of plastic wrap and pound with a mallet until each slice is about 1â „8-inch thick. These slices are huge, so you can cut each pounded scaloppine widthwise into 2 pieces. You will end up with 10 to 12 slices.
Using a food processor or blender, grind the cilantro, chiles, lemon juice, water, ginger, garlic, salt, turmeric, and cumin to a smooth, fine paste. Taste for seasoning and adjust the lemon juice and salt as needed; the masala should taste slightly tart as well as salty. Smear the masala over the meat, turning and restacking each piece to ensure that all the slices are evenly covered. Set aside to marinate for 30 minutes or up to 12 hours in the refrigerator. Heat the oil in a large, heavy skillet. Place the
rava in a large bowl or plate. Remove any big gobs of marinade from the scaloppine but don’t scrape all the marinade off; you want as much of it to stay on as possible. Dip each scaloppine in the rava and dust well on both sides. Pan-fry in batches until crisp and browned, 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Do not overcrowd the pan. Remove to a paper-towel lined plate. Serve immediately. Note: Rava, also called sooji, is Indian cream of wheat. It is available as both fine and coarse flours. You may use either.
Potpie with a creative twist Though crabmeat may not be the first thing people think of when recalling “potpie,â€? the versatility of potpie makes it amenable to any number of unique ingredients. Cooks aiming to expand their potpie horizons can try their hands at the following recipe for “Deviled Crab Potpieâ€? from Elinor Klivans’ “Potpiesâ€? (Chronicle Books). DEVILED CRAB POTPIE Serves 4 as an entrĂŠe or 8 as an appetizer Filling •1 pound fresh lump crabmeat, picked over for shell
•1⠄4 cup mayonnaise •1 tablespoon unsalted butter •1⠄2 cup finely chopped onion •1⠄2 cup finely chopped celery •1⠄4 cup finely chopped red bell pepper •1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley •1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest •2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice •1 teaspoon paprika (sweet Hungarian preferred) •2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce •Salt and freshly ground black pepper Topping •1-1⠄2 cups
panko
(Japanese bread crumbs) •1 teaspoon paprika (sweet Hungarian preferred) •4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted Position a rack in the middle of the oven. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Put four ovenproof baking dishes or ovenproof bowls with a 2-cup capacity (for (entrÊes) or 8 ramekins with a 1-cup capacity (for appetizers) on a baking sheet. The baking sheet makes it easier to move the baking dishes in and out of the oven.
naise together. Set aside. In a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat for 1 minute. Add the onion, celery and bell pepper and cook until they soften, about 5 minutes, stirring often. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. Stir the parsley, lemon zest, lemon juice, paprika, and Worcestershire into
the crabmeat. Stir in the onion mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Divide the filling evenly among the baking dishes. Prepare the topping: In a medium bowl, stir the panko, paprika and melted butter together to evenly moisten the panko. Divide the mixture evenly among the
filled baking containers. Pat gently to form a firm, even coating over the crabmeat. Bake until the topping is lightly browned and the juices are bubbling gently, about 15 minutes. Protecting your hands with pot holders, put the hot baking dishes on individual plates and serve.
Make the filling: In a medium bowl, stir the crabmeat and mayon-
