The cast of SaskExpress performed onstage for two hours at the Kamsack Playhouse.

covering everything from the black and white era to the Netflix generation, according to a release from SaskExpress. The show was written and conceived by Danny Balkwill and choreographed by Matt Alfano. The performers include Elizabeth Hilderman of Kamsack. “Since starting rehearsals in April the cast and I have been working tirelessly to prepare for the tour,” Hilderman said in a release. “Sometimes it can feel like a lot but it’s the type of hard work that you know will pay off in the end. But that doesn’t mean we don’t leave room for fun. “The people I work with have become some of my best friends and I can’t wait to see what the summer brings for us. Since this technically isn’t my first show being a part of SE (SaskExpress), what with me being an understudy in 2017, touring isn’t as foreign to me now. From what I can remember some venues were very hot, some were very windy, and sometimes we’d be asked to perform an impromptu song in a coffee shop. I’m excited about the sunburn and the bus rides and to show Saskatchewan the amazing show our director has made for us.”

This was the cast of the SaskExpress performance held at the Kamsack Playhouse on August 18. According to attendees, the cast did not disappoint the 150 plus in attendance at the Playhouse Theatre. “They performed for a full two hours,” said Nicole Larson, volunteer and member of the Playhouse board. “The SaskExpress performance was very good and our local hometown performer, Elizabeth Hilderman, sure impressed the audience,” said Allard.

“Plus, we get to show off our grilling skills!” Several free BBQs have been set up throughout Saskatchewan, especially in the Parkland.

Q: What if my offer is rejected? A: If your offer is rejected (where the seller says

no and does not give a counter offer), you have the right to present another offer. The same applies to offers that haven’t received any response. It’s uncommon for a seller not to reply with a counter offer, so don’t worry too much!

Preeceville football camp said to bring out best in players Courtesy of Preeceville Progress The Preeceville Panther football program held its annual fall conditioning camp that focused on players performances during the week of August 26 to 30. Doug King is the offensive co-ordinator; Jeremy Mattison, defensive coordinator: Bill Dodge, assistant coach and Patrick Livingstone is the medical aid. “There were 12 players that came out for practices,” said Mattison. “ We have two returning players this year but most of the players have played football in the past. It will be a rebuilding year for us with the focus of building player esteem and skills. It will be a challenging sea-

son with a lot of tough competitors. I firmly believe that with the team’s great attitude and dedication we will be able to have a successful season.” Throughout the week the team has focused on conditioning, timing, systems and contact play. The team is in the 1A, conference 4 which also includes: Porcupine Plain, Hudson Bay, Carrot River and St. Brieux. Practices for the team will be held at 7 a.m. weekly on the field. The first game for Preeceville will see the team hosting Hudson Bay in its first home game on September 6. Home games will be held. The following week September 13 Preeceville will travel to St. Brieux for an away game. Preeceville will play Porcupine Plain

on September 27 in Porcupine Plain. The last game will be a home

game on October 4 against Carrot River. Playoffs are scheduled

to begin on October 10 with the fourth placing playing the first place team

and the second and third place team will be playing against one another.

Canora paramedic opens in-home music studio Courtesy of The Canora Courier Mathew Tourand has had a busy career as an advanced care paramedic with Canora Ambulance Care since moving to Canora in 2012, but he has started a home-based project which is likely to keep him just as busy on many of his off days. In the basement of his house in Canora, Tourand recently opened New Pulse Studios. It’s a studio where he plans to record the music of performers from around the area. Tourand said he was born and raised in Weyburn, and has been interested in music almost ever since he can remember. “I learned the electric guitar when I was 11 or 12 years old,” he recalled. “I switched to bass at around 15 when a band at our school was looking for a bass player.” Since then, Tourand has played in a number of different bands. He was in a Regina-based band for a while after moving to Canora, but said the travelling got to be too much. Approximately two years ago he made the decision to build his own studio.

“I gutted the basement of my house and put in sound-proof insulation in the walls and ceiling,” Tourand said. “The studio construction and layout is all from my own ideas.” The facility is equipped to record vocals and instruments separately and then bring them all together in the finished recording. “I’m looking for new artists, to produce a recording they can be proud of,” he said. “I’m not looking to make a lot of money from this. It’s more of a hobby, to get my mind of my day job and focus on something else.” “I don’t have any formal musical training. I’m a completely self-taught as a recording and mixing engineer.” Tourand recently recorded a song for a young band from Langenburg known as The Firm. He hopes to do more of the same for other up-and-coming acts, and teach them about the recording process at the same time. “From my experience, one of the things young artists need to learn about is the importance of timing,” he explained. “Even though the instruments and vocals are all record-

Mathew Tourand has opened New Pulse Studios, a recording studio in the basement of his Canora home. ed separately, the timing has to be exactly the same to produce the best possible final recording.” But Tourand said a successful experience in a recording studio requires more than technical expertise. “I have been involved as a musician in recording at other studios where the atmosphere was far

too business-like. The engineer criticized the performers for every little mistake and made us feel like screw-ups,” he said. “In this studio I want to make people feel comfortable and help them enjoy the experience.” Even with the studio project, Tourand has continued to be busy as a performer. He recently became involved in a local punk rock band named Prairie Revolt. Tourand plays bass,

with a lineup that also features Jeremy Negraeff (lead guitar), Colin Knight (vocals), Evan Kushneruk (vocals, guitar) and Eric Kushneruk (drums). “The idea for band’s name came out of us being from Saskatchewan, and we were all into the old punk music and wanted to stay away from the soft, easy rock,” said Tourand. He said the group got started when the Kushneruk brothers gave him a call and they ended

up jamming together a few times. “About a year ago we did an open-mic gig at Canora Hotel,” he recalled. “That was really well received. We got some good feedback and it motivated us to do more. Then in July we performed at the Canora in Bloom Festival in the Park.” Prairie Revolt has done some preliminary recording at New Pulse Studios, which they listen to and try to correct their mistakes. Tourand said the group has played mostly covers so far, but want to get into writing their own music and recording it at some point. “If other young bands can see what we’re doing and somehow learn from it, that would be great,” he said. Within the last few weeks, Tourand purchased a live PA (public address) system. He said he plans to use it to produce live shows, such as Canora in Bloom, and possibly record live off the stage. “Eventually I would like to buy more equipment and start doing DJ services,” he said. Tourand normally is on call for five consecutive days at Canora Ambulance Care. He then has five days off, and plans to make full use of that time working at New Pulse Studios.

Tourand recently purchased a live PA (public address) system, and plans to produce live shows.

SJHL Hockey is back: With less than 48 hours to go before the first pre-season game against longstanding rival, the Melville Millionaires, the roster of Terriers’ vets and new blood promises a new dynamic on the ice this season.

Terriers Training camp leads pre-season win against Melville

By Cory Carlick Staff Writer With the launch of the SJHL season days away, the Yorkton Terriers wasted no time with the training camp taking place throughout the weekend.

The Terriers’ roster this year is a combination of a few returning players, with a considerable amount of new faces, after losing a number of last year’s players to collegiate and WHL level teams. Exhibition games commenced September 2nd against longtime rivals, the Melville Millionaires, at

the Farrell Agencies arena. The Terriers won their first preseason game 3-1 against the Mils, shots on goal 37-27 Yorkton. Terriers face off against Weyburn on Wednesday, returning to Yorkton Thursday to go up against the Wayway Wolverines.

Jim Vewchar elected Canora’s new mayor Jim Vewchar, who has resided in Canora for over 30 years, received 314 votes on August 28 to be elected Canora’s new mayor. In the byelection to compete the term of Gina Rakochy he defeated Michael Kwas, who received 179 votes; Councillor Kerry Trask, who received 177 votes and Bill Reaume, who received 25 votes. The current term expires in October, 2020. A total of 695 ballots were counted, plus two ballots were rejected and two ballots were spoiled, said Michael Mykytyshyn, the returning officer. There were approximately 1,650 eligible voters, which works out to a voter turnout of just over 42 per cent.

Jim Vewchar was elected Canora’s new mayor in a byelection held on August 28. After the byelection, Vewchar was planning to take his oath of office

and assume the duties of mayor at the next regular council meeting. “It was exciting to find out I received so much support from the people,” said Vewchar. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of being Canora’s mayor.” One of the first things he plans to do as mayor is to assess where Canora is standing at the present time and determine the best way to move forward. Since the town is about half-way through its fiscal year, he said it will be easier to make long-term plans after the next budget. Vewchar said during the campaign, voters told him that “Canora has been lacking in leadership and needs to start moving forward.”

Anthrax confirmed in RM of Golden West #95 The Ministry of Agriculture is reminding producers to be on the lookout for anthrax in their animals after an anthrax case was confirmed in the RM of Golden West in southeastern Saskatchewan. Anthrax was confirmed by laboratory results on August 29, 2019, as the cause of sudden death in seven animals. Anthrax is caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis, which can survive in spore form for decades in soil. Changes in soil moisture, from flooding and drying, can lead to

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Dr. Armstrong told Ridge that Thomas’ condition was dire. Brooke tried to get Ridge to understand that Thomas’s fall was a terrible accident, but Ridge was convinced that the push was intentional. Bill defended Brooke to Katie. Brooke was devastated to learn that Thomas was not trying to harm Hope, just apologize. Eric shared his dis-

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old man in excellent overall health. Routine bloodwork recently showed an elevated potassium level of 5.6. For the most part, I follow a vegetarian diet, which includes a number of very healthy foods that also happen to be high in potassium. I exercise regularly. Two years ago, my level was 4.9. My cardiologist stopped my metoprolol, as he said that could have pushed up the potassium,

a build-up of the spores on pastures. Spores can concentrate in sloughs and potholes, and risk of animal exposure to anthrax increases in drier years when these areas dry up and become accessible. Spores can also surface when the ground is excavated or when there is excessive run-off. Livestock are infected when they eat forage contaminated with spores. Ruminants such as bison, cattle, sheep and goats are highly susceptible, and horses can also be infected. Swine, birds and

carnivores are more resistant to infection, but farm dogs and cats should be kept away from carcasses. Affected animals are usually found dead without any signs of illness. Anthrax can be prevented by vaccination. Producers in regions that have experienced previous outbreaks are strongly encouraged to vaccinate their animals each year. If your neighbours have anthrax, you should consider vaccination to protect your animals. The carcass of any animal suspected of having anthrax should not be

may over Thomas’ deplorable actions with Quinn. Shauna visited Flo in jail and then begged Quinn for her help. Detective Sanchez was surprised that Flo hadn’t made bail yet. Ridge was furious to find Liam lashing out at Thomas. Shauna admitted to Quinn that she knew the truth all along. Wait to See: Thomas becomes a suspect in Emma’s death. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Kristen offered to give up some compelling information in exchange for her freedom. Xander swore to Maggie that Holly was alive. Gabi and Stefan professed their love for one another. Eric had an intense confrontation with Kristen. Kate made a stunand he felt that based on my routine tests it was safe to stop it. I also stopped the 500-mg turmeric supplement I was taking, as a precaution. I take no other drugs. I’d hate to have to give up bananas and the other fruits that contain potassium, which I eat in moderation as part of my regular diet. Do you think the 5.6 level is cause for concern, and could you make a recommendation? — V.D. ANSWER: A potassium level of 5.6 is still in the normal range in my hospital’s laboratory. Although metoprolol can raise potassium, it’s not one of the medicines that is very likely to do so, such as an ACE inhibitor or spironolactone. Some people just have a high normal potassium. Turmeric, on

moved or disturbed, and should be protected from scavengers such as coyotes or ravens, to prevent spreading spores in the environment. Anyone who suspects the presence of an anthrax case should contact their local veterinarian immediately for diagnosis. All tests must be confirmed by a laboratory diagnosis. All positive test results must be immediately reported to the provincial Chief Veterinary Officer. Producers are advised to use caution when handling

the other hand, has lots of potassium, so stopping that was reasonable. I would recommend that you not worry too much about the potassium and keep up your diet, including fruits in moderation. In addition to avoiding turmeric, I would recommend that you avoid salt substitutes, since they have very high amounts of potassium. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am fortunate enough to be a healthy and well 81-yearold woman. I take vitamin D, and exercise daily with walking and yoga. My recent bone density test showed my T-score for the hip at -2.2 and spine

at -3.2. My primary doctor insists that I take Prolia or Boniva. I am reluctant to do this, as I am aware of the side effects and don’t trust the ultimate results of the medication. Nutrition centers have recommended calcium supplements. Your help would be greatly appreciated. — L.B. ANSWER: Anyone can get an estimate of his or her risk for fracture using the FRAX calculation tool at www.sheffield. ac.uk/FRAX. I made a few assumptions with the information you gave me and estimated your risk of a hip fracture in the next 10 years as 6%, and any major osteoporotic frac-

potentially infected animals or carcasses. Animal cases pose minimal risk to humans, but people can get infected through direct contact with sick animals or carcasses. In cases where people believe they have been exposed to an infected animal, they should contact their local health authority or physician for advice. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Uncomfortable at having witnessed Nick and Sharon’s close moment, Chelsea and Adam quickly fled the scene. Although

Adam pretended to be unbothered, Chelsea realized that he was threatened by Sharon’s friendship with Nick and warned him not to push her away. Chelsea later accused Sharon of having lingering feelings for Adam. Theo tried to make amends with Mariah by suggesting that they work together. Mariah cautiously agreed to give him a chance, and the two hit it off. However, upon parting ways, it was clear that neither trusted the other at all. ture as 17%. A medication like Boniva would be expected to reduce your risk to something like 4% and 14%. Prolia has been shown to reduce risk of vertebral and hip fractures, and the decreased risk of vertebral fracture might be even greater with this drug (perhaps 4% hip and 8% total), although Prolia and Boniva have not been directly compared. Guidelines would clearly recommend medication for you. Calcium alone is unlikely to significantly reduce your risk of fracture. “Insist” is a strong word, but given the reduc-

tion in your relatively high fracture risk, I would suggest that you reconsider. Boniva is given once monthly and Prolia twice yearly. The side effects are mild for most people. Taking the medication for three to five years is very reasonable, after which you’d re-evaluate. I hope this information makes it easier for you to make the right decision for yourself. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu.

“The Hustle” (PG-13) — In this remake of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” Josephine Chesterfield (Anne Hathaway) is an elegant and refined beauty who preys on slick, wealthy men. Penny Rust (Rebel Wilson) is a flyby-the-seat-of-her-pants catfisher who dupes lowbrow guys out of fistfuls of bucks. Both con women set up residence in the lovely and fictional French town of Beaumont-sur-Mer, but two hustlers in one town is one too many. Unable to share the wealth of deserving suckers, they make a deal: Con the ultimate mark — app developer Thomas Westerburg (Alex Sharp) — and the loser has to leave town. There are some laughs for sure, but most of it tries way too hard to be clever or funny and ends up being neither. “A Dog’s Journey” (G) — If something about this seems super familiar,

Dennis Quaid in “A Dog’s Journey”. you’re right. It’s a sequel to “A Dog’s Purpose,” and some of the players are the same. Josh Gad returns to voice Bailey the dog, who we follow as he hurtles through time, embodying different puppers along the way. Bailey starts out returned to her boy, Ethan (Dennis Quaid), but now watching over a new little kid: Ethan’s granddaughter CJ. When CJ’s mother takes her away from the farm, Bailey journeys again through lifetimes to find his girl and watch over her. If you cried at the

first one, you’ll cry at this one, too. It’s simplistic but still sweet, and watchable by any age group. “Brightburn” (R) — Here’s an interesting take on the superhero genre: a horror story. A baby boy falls to Earth inside a downed spaceship, landing on a farm in Kansas. A couple, Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle (David Denman), take in the boy they name Brandon (Jackson Dunn) and raise him as their own. They hide the ship in the barn. As the boy approaches

puberty, he begins to come into his innate powers and sets off on a rampage worthy of a 12-year-old antihero, all the while egged on by the hidden spaceship’s murderous message. “The Tomorrow Man” (PG-13) — Two eccentrics find love in the grocery aisle in a freshman effort by writer/director Noble Jones. John Lithgow is Ed, a doomsday-prepping, check-writing, cable-news watching, chatboard-loving retiree whose internet handle is “Captain Reality.” He’s a little delusional and a little sad. Enter Ronnie (Blythe Danner), a peculiar and spacey hoarder who is a vision in flowy skirts and baggy sweaters. Ed discovers Ronnie in the local grocers buying tuna cans and batteries. Must be a match, eh? The pair interact and showcase their numerous oddball tics and eccentricities. Flowerpots are more than just containers for fragrant herbs, summer’s begonias or fall’s chrysanthemums. Grab a plain clay pot the next time you and your kids are at a nursery or garden center, hold it up and think of it as an artist’s canvas, waiting for your creative expression. Purchase several, or repurpose empty clay pots you have at home, and you’re on your way to this fun family activity.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Changing your mind doesn’t come easily for Lambs, who place a high value on commitment. But new facts could emerge that might persuade you to rethink your situation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is a good time to put that fine Bovine’s eye for beauty to work in

Create a Southwest look, ideal for potting a cactus. Draw designs like zigzags, triangles and circles on the pot with a pencil or marker. Trace the design with white household glue on one section of the pot, then sprinkle clean, colored craft sand over the glue. Or, cover the entire pot with tile grout (see above) and sprinkle colored sand over the grout. Embed small objects such as marbles into the sand and grout.

Once you and your kids have added the artistic embellishments to the pots, fill them with fresh potting soil, plant cuttings from your summer garden or pot new flowers for fall and watch your living “windowsill masterpieces” grow. Use extra decorated pots as catchalls for desk supplies, hair accessories, etc. Here are three easy techniques: WACKY JUNK Slather tile grout on the outside of a clay pot like you are frosting a cake. Dig through your toy box, junk or desk drawer and choose tiny, lightweight, whimsical items such as plastic spiders or sea creatures,

a pocket mirror, leftover game piece, badge, button or coin. Embed the pieces

in the grout. Let dry thoroughly. SAND DESIGNS

SIMPLE PAINTING Paint a clean clay flowerpot with acrylic paints using a paintbrush or a painting sponge. Experiment with a crazy,

redecorating your home or workplace. And don’t forget to indulge yourself in some personal time as well. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your sense of loyalty to someone who asks for your help is commendable. But make sure there are no information gaps that should be filled in before you move too far

too quickly. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t let difficult people raise the Crab’s ire levels this week. Avoid them if you can. If not, resist telling them off, even if you think they deserve it. Things improve by week’s end. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your suspicions about a colleague might be on the mark. But you also could be misreading the signals you believe you’re getting. Do some discreet checking before jumping to conclusions. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Take some time out from your many tasks and see if someone

might be trying to reach out to you. You could be surprised to learn who it is and why you might want to reciprocate. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You still might want to do more investigating before taking on a new commitment. Later would not be the time to try to fill in any crucial gaps in what you need to know about it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A new opportunity should be carefully studied. It might offer some of the things you’ve been looking for. Or it could contain new possibilities you never considered. Check it out.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might have to work harder this week to get people to listen to what you have to say. But if you stay with it, you could start to get your message out to many by week’s end. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Although family matters again take up a big chunk of the Goat’s time, the week also offers a chance to explore a new career move you’d been contemplating for a while. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Applying your practicality (what does it offer me?) and

WE

your creativity (how can I improve on it?) could provide sound reasons for seriously considering that new offer. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The single set will find that keeping their romantic aspirations on high gives Cupid a better target to aim at. Paired Pisces will find that this week helps reinforce their relationships. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in encouraging others to demand the best from themselves. You would be a fine sports coach, as well as an enlightened teacher.

By Dana Jackson Q: Do you know when a new season of “Grace and Frankie” might be available? Also, I got hooked on “Shtisel.” I hated when it ended. It was a great soap opera-type serial. Are there any new episodes or was that the cliffhanger end? — A.V. in New Jersey A: “Grace and Frankie” is a hit comedy on Netflix that stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. It’s the longest-running comedy on the streaming service since “Orange Is the New Black.” Netflix has so much confidence in the show that it renewed it for a sixth season before season five even aired this past spring. However, you’ll have to wait until 2020 (hopefully early in the year) for season six to be available for viewing. “Shtisel,” the show about an Orthodox Jewish family starring Ayelet Zurer, first aired in Israel in 2013 and lasted just two seasons. Netflix then picked it up and made those episodes available to audiences in America, where it became a hit. Now “Shtisel” is being renewed for a third season, but since the drama is only in pre-production, its fans will have to sit and wait. Q: I’m addicted to the CBS sitcom “Mom” and can’t wait to see the new episodes. I’m wondering if Anna Faris, who plays Christy on the show, sings a version of “What a Wonderful World” on a Toyota car commercial? — R.K. A: I admit defeat. I wasn’t able to find out

splashy design of swirls, stripes and spots (dip the eraser end of an old pencil in the paint to dab on the dots). For a spattered look, older children can dip the bristles of an old toothbrush in paint and run their thumb across the bristles to spray flecks on the pot. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. To find more of her creative family recipes and activities, visit www. donnasday.com and link to the NEW Donna’s Day Facebook fan page. Her latest book is “Donna Erickson’s Fabulous Funstuff for Families.”

Anna Faris definitively who recorded “What a Wonderful World” for a Toyota Camry commercial, but I did have fun doing the research. There was much, much debate on the Internet over the female vocalist’s identity. Guesses included Kat Edmonson, Suzi Quatro, Christina Perri, and various contestants from “The Voice” and “American Idol.” (There also were many comments scolding the dad for driving his car at such an unsafe speed on a twisty highway with his young son in the backseat.) As for Anna Faris, I couldn’t verify the beautiful, breathy voice was hers, but if I ever get confirmation of exactly who it is, I’ll be sure to let you all know. Q: I never heard of the TV show “Chicago P.D.” until I saw it this summer (in what looked like

reruns). Will it be back this fall with a new season? — M.W. A: “Chicago P.D.” is a spinoff of the hit show “Chicago Fire.” Nowadays when one crime or firstresponder show becomes a hit, there are multiple spinoffs. Many are successful, and “Chicago P.D.” is no exception. The show will be back this fall, but there are some casting changes. Jon Seda won’t be returning as Det. Antonio Dawson, while Lisseth Chavez, formerly of “The Fosters,” will debut as undercover cop Vanessa Rojas. Look for “Chicago P.D.’s” seventh-season premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. New teachers welcomed to CCS for new school year Courtesy of The Canora Courier Rebecca Matte and Erin Graas are new teachers at Canora Composite School for the upcoming school year. Graas grew up on a farm between Moose Jaw and Regina. She said during those years she enjoyed reading, playing softball and performing on-stage, whether in drama or singing in a choir. “On a regular school day, I would usually be on the bus by 7:45 a.m., play softball or be in rehearsals after school, and get home by around 11 p.m.” said Graas. Looking back now, she said her interest in teaching started at a young age. “I’ve always enjoyed explaining to others how to do things,” she recalled. “Even when we played school as kids, I was always the teacher.” After completing high school in Moose Jaw, Graas began her post-secondary education at the U of R as a theatre student. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in theatre and a Bachelor of Education in arts education with a drama major. Her previous teaching experience includes: teaching mainly Grade 7 in Strathmore, Alta, teaching Grade 6 and 7 in Calgary on a contract basis and teaching high Trucking & Transport

Erin Graas is a new member of the CCS staff, and will be teaching ELA (English Language Arts), Psychology, Native Studies and Drama. school English and drama in Swift Current. Graas then decided to teach in a brand new environment, and spent two years as a drama specialist at Marian Baker School, an international private school in Costa Rica, after applying for the position online. “I taught from Grade 3, when they knew little or no English, up to Grade 12, when they were fluent in English,” said Graas. “The experience definitely made me a better teacher. Suddenly I knew what it was like to be in a minority.” Graas said she enjoyed the experience thoroughly, and plans to go back someday. “The weather was always nice,” she said. “I miss the markets there. Every Saturday you could go out and get all kinds of fresh food.” Upon her return to Canada, Graas spent a year as an adult programmer at the Weyburn Public Library. For the past five years, she was the art and drama teacher at Yorkton Regional High School, before joining the CCS staff. She teaches ELA (English Language Arts) 10, 20 and 30; Psychology 30; Native Studies 20 and Drama 10, 20 and 30, as well as working with students in high school preparation and career guidance. “It’s lots of fun,” she said. “There are many good things going on at the school right now, including drama, various sports and other extracurricular

Rebecca Matte has joined the Canora Composite School staff as the new Grade 7 teacher in a variety of subjects. activities. Everyone on staff has plenty of enthusiasm.” Graas said she is focused on helping students to make progress in their studies from where they begin at the start of the school year. “Whether they are planning to go into a trade or attend university, I want them to be successful and stay safe,” she said. “But I also enjoy just being in the class with high school students and having conversations with them.” She likes being involved in extracurricular activities as a driver, helper or dance chaperone. Graas said she’s very approachable, and enjoys meeting with parents in an informal setting. “Even before parent/ teacher interviews, I would like to spend time with the parents of our students,” she said. “Whether a child is struggling in school or excelling, I would encourage parents to come and visit me and see where the students spend so much of their time.” Graas has lived in Canora for almost three years. “I love living in a small town,” she said. “I was able to afford to buy a house here, which is only a three-minute walk to CCS. I have a number of friends in Canora, and I have been made to feel very welcome at Gateway Community Church.” Her hobbies include: foster parenting kittens, gardening, reading, writing, photography and collecting craft supplies.

She hopes to find time to actually do crafts in the future. “I seem to be in a constant state of renovating my house, but I’m not sure if that qualifies as a hobby,” she said. “I look forward to getting to know even more people in Canora in the future.” Rebecca Matte is the new Grade 7 teacher at CCS, teaching “everything except phys-ed and practical applied arts (shop).” Matte was born and raised in Nova Scotia, and said her family moved around quite a bit during her childhood. “I loved rugby and was active in the army cadet program,” said Matte. “I am still involved with the cadets as an adult in Yorkton.” After graduating high school, Matte started her post-secondary education in general studies and then took a year of nursing. At this point she decided she wanted to become a teacher, and graduated from Memorial University in St. John’s Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Education in primary elementary. In addition to teaching, Matte is presently a distance education student, pursuing her special education certificate at the U of S. Matte previously taught Grades 1 to 6 in a multigrade classroom setting in Stony Rapids, which is located in northern Saskatchewan, just 82 kilometres south of the Northwest Territories border. After two-and-a-half years in Stony Rapids, she moved to Canora. Matte taught Grades 2 and 3 at Victoria School in Kamsack for four years, including one year of maternity leave, before coming to CCS. “I haven’t met too many people here, but it seems like a very upbeat, proud, creative and artistic school from what I’ve seen on the walls,” she observed. Matte said she gets a lot of joy and satisfaction from being a teacher. “I love that “light bulb moment” that happens when you know you’ve helped a student shape a part of what they’re going to eventually become,” she said. “I want students to challenge themselves and seek opportunities to grow and seize those opportunities. I want to teach them to be independent learners and expand their knowledge.” She said she is looking forward to meeting the parents of her students. “We have an amazing opportunity to make this the best year your child has ever had,” she said. “I hope you are just as excited as I am to be a part of it.” Matte lives in Canora with her husband Brad and their two-year-old son Leonardo. Brad works at CP Rail. Outside of teaching, she enjoys her volunteer work in the army cadet program and just spending time with her family.

• On Sept. 10, 1608, English adventurer John Smith is elected council president of Jamestown, Virginia — the first permanent English settlement in North America. Smith was popular because of his organizational skills

and effectiveness in dealing with local Native Americans. • On Sept. 11, 1814, during the Battle of Plattsburg on Lake Champlain, a newly built U.S. fleet under Master Commandant Thomas Macdonough destroys a besieging British squadron, forcing the British retreat to Canada on foot. The American victory

saved New York from possible invasion. • On Sept. 15, 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, the British launch a major offensive against the Germans, employing tanks for the first time. Some of the 40 or so primitive tanks advanced over a mile into enemy lines, but were too slow to hold their positions and prone to mechanical breakdown.

• On Sept. 12, 1940, a collection of prehistoric cave paintings is discovered near Montignac, France. They depict 600 painted and drawn animals and symbols and nearly 1,500 engravings from the Upper Paleolithic period some 16,000 years ago. • On Sept. 9, 1956, Elvis Presley makes his first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Sullivan

had originally banned Presley but finally signed him to an unprecedented $50,000 deal for three appearances. • On Sept. 13, 1971, the four-day revolt ends at the maximum-security Attica Correctional Facility in New York when hundreds of state police storm the complex in a hail of gunfire.
