Like a mother hen showing off her brood of chicks, 93 year old Helen Panchuk from Kamsack proudly shows the watermelons she grew in her garden this year. Although it’s more difficult for her to see the weeds now due to her macular degeneration, she still tends a large garden. In the foreground she shows off her cantaloupes. Pink lavatera shows in the background. On November 11th she will turn 94. She remains a very capable independent woman trying to be as productive as possible, although she’s had to drop a few activities due to her deteriorating eyesight. She had to drop her quilting for that reason. Now she spends her time inside crocheting because she can feel the yarn between her finger.

Churchbridge holds first disc golf tourney The third leg of the Legacy Co-op Disc Golf Tournament Series was held Saturday at the Churchbridge Credit Union Disc Golf course. Attracting 18 golfers, and having excellent support from local businesses in providing prizes the day was deemed a huge success for an inaugural tournament. The open division of the event was played over three rounds of the 12-basket course which was

opened to play earlier this year. When the final putt was made it was Duncan Holness of Broadview, SK. coming out on top with rounds of 42-41-42 on the par-38 course from a three round total of 125. Yorkton’s Nick Leclerc slotted in second with a 42-44-41 for a total of 127, two strokes back, tied with Churchbridge’s own Rob Gosselin. The pair split second and third money. Brothers Sebastian

Leimhofer and Lukas Leimhofer of Inglis, MB rounded out the top five, with Sebastian 45-44-44 for 133, and Lukas 42-46-47 for 135. In the 50-plus division, playing only two rounds, Yorkton’s Trevor Lyons topped the field with 42-44 for an 86 total, two strokes up on Doug Kerr, also of Yorkton. He shot a 46-42 88. Karl Leimhofer, of Inglis, MB was third with a 47-46 93. The Junior Division was topped by Todd Frasier from

Churchbridge with a 51-47 for a 98 total. Hunter Yankee also from Churchbridge was second with a 73-66 for 139. Sandy Kerr of Yorkton was the top female player with a 51-51, 102. In the longest drive competition Nick Leclerc had the best toss at 379.5-feet. The final event in the Legacy Co-op Series will go Sunday at Whitesand Regional Park near

Theodore this Sunday. The Parkland Association of Disc Golf will return to Churchbridge Saturday, Oct. 19, as the course will host the Grain Millers Champion’s Challenge where Wadena’s Mark Kienle will hope to defend his Yorkton Lions Club Trophy in the open division, and win his second champion’s jacket. — Submitted by the Parkland Association of Disc Golf

New book draws on Yorkton experience By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer A new book by Richard Doornink; 1967 – a coming of age story has its roots firmly set in Yorkton. “I was born in Winnipeg in 1958,” relates the author. “In September 1966 we moved to Yorkton where we spent the next three years, and which almost all of the material for 1967 – a coming of age story came from.” The stay in Yorkton was a short one, the family moving to Toronto in 1969, but it left a lasting impression on Doornink. “I consider the period in Yorkton my coming of age period, at least in so far as transitioning from a child mostly unaware, to a child somewhat aware of life around him,” he said. Writing was long an interest for Doornink but it would take years for that interest to result in a book. “I was originally a high school dropout,” he said. “My career has been split between the creative world and the business world. “I’ve been an entrepreneur since I was 23 when I started my first company Cantesco Corporation, which I successfully grew into a worldwide manufacturer of welding chemicals. I set up an operation in North Tonawanda, NY in the early nineties, hence the Buffalo connection today (he currently splits his time between Buffalo, New York; Venice, Florida; and Lion’s Head, Ontario.) “As for the creative side, I’ve studied painting, photography, and was involved for a time in independent Canadian film as a production manager and post-production coordinator working with John Martin-Manteiga. John was a big influence for me both from an architecture appreciation aesthetic, as well as a writer.” In terms of writing Doornink said, “It all started way back in Mr. Kahro’s English class in high school. I still have the stories I wrote back then. Later in life I decided to go to university as a mature student, and went to York University. “After realizing business classes were not what I was interested in, I decided to study the two things I did enjoy, political science and film. I ultimately graduated with a fine arts degree with a focus on French and Italian cinema. “The last few courses at York University kind of brought me back to thinking about writing again. “After completing a long first draft in 2014, I realized I was still far from understanding the craft, so in 2015 I completed the

Humber School for Writers postgraduate creative writing program. It was through the School for Writers that my skill set improved immensely, and I was fortunate to work with a terrific mentor, Isabel Huggan, an award winning Canadian author herself.” But was the germ of an idea for the book? “The idea for the book stems from a number of things,” said Doornink. “While going to York University I took a studio class that focused on performance art, and also a film and video production class. I had terrific teachers but the one that heavily influenced me was Brenda Longfellow, an award winning Canadian filmmaker and York University professor. It was her class from which the genesis for 1967 came about, although at the time I didn’t really recognize it. “One of the aspects of the class we studied was the focus, particularly from the Canadian perspective, of the role of memory in our history. One of the projects we did was a short, in-camera ‘home movie’. In the making of the home movie a long buried memory I had, surfaced. That’s where “1967 – a coming of age story” really started. From this single, buried memory.” The book is Doornink’s first, coming from the memory he ultimately had to share. “I think for me it wasn’t about whether the book was worth writing as much as it was I simply had to write,” he said. “I had always wanted to write, it was finally time to make a commitment to learning how to write, and then write. “The worth in the book, at least for me, is in talking to people who have read it. Listening to their takeaways. The things they liked about the book. The emotions it provokes within them. The characters they identify with. “There is a great joy, a pleasure in hearing their reactions to the things I’ve written. I quickly found out how a book becomes everyone else’s, once it’s published, it’s a very powerful, inter-connected relationship.” As Doornink’s first book, he admits he learned a lot about the creative process in its writing. “One of the things I’ve learned about writing is to let the story come to you, and that’s what happened

here,” he related. “The book initially started with a short story, the birthday story. As I started writing more consistently, I wrote a second short story, and then a third. “When I stepped back and looked at the stories, what intrigued me was that all three stories were located in Yorkton. This was an eye opener in the sense that this particular time and place had such a major effect on me, at least at a subconscious level. “Once I had several Yorkton based short stories drafted, I realized I needed a way to sort them out, and at that point I thought, maybe I have a book here. It was a case of writing first and sort of prepping second, which I found not to be very effective.” But did the book come together as Doornink had imagined initially it would? “There was a lot of work in terms of flow, it was my first book and you obviously learn as you go,” he said. “My second book, a much larger book, and my third book, have both gotten off to an easier start as a result of working through the first book. I have a better handle on the story outline and plot development processes from the first book experience.” And what is now the best aspect of the book from the author’s perspective? “Its simplicity,” said Doornink. “The book has a lot of things going on inside of it, but it was deliberately written in a simple style as I tried to write from the mind of a young boy, as he would have thought and reacted. As a result, many readers have come back and said it’s an easy read. “I was a bit offended in the beginning when I heard that, but I came to realize the book allows the reader to read the way they want to read, at a pace and depth they want to put into, or take out of, the book.”

Richard Doornink’s first book draws heavily on his time in Yorkton. Ultimately Doornink looks at the book as a good first foray into the art of writing. “Considering this was my first book, yes. I know I’m a better writer today and would love to start the book again with the new skills I have, but you have to let that go,” he said. “As a debut novel I think it’s strongly written, has gotten great reviews and, more importantly, people enjoy reading it. You can’t ask for more than that.” The next step is finding

the right audience. “The challenge within the book industry, as elsewhere in life, is you need to be slotted into a category for selling purposes,” said Doornink. “My initial target audience was the 50 and up age group in so far as they could relate to the time and place. I tested the third draft with a readers group that fit that demographic, evenly split between men and women. “I also wanted to see if the book had a North American appeal, and

half of the 12 readers I approached were American. The feedback was that the book read as well in middle America as it did in the middle of the prairies. “Having said that, I also believe there is a young adult audience for the book. I’ve also had positive feedback from a sort of middle age audience (30’s and 40’s). So, at the risk of making the book harder to sell, the appeal is fairly wide ranging. “The point is, the basic themes, what we know as children, what adults don’t talk to kids about, the experiences of being a new kid, of trying to fit into school, coming of age, are fairly universal, at least in North America. All is to say, the book appeals to a number of audiences for a variety of reasons.” More will follow from the author. “My second book Buffalo – A Love Story, a historical fiction set in Buffalo, NY spanning 40-years, is currently in first draft form, and will hopefully be in the editing stages before the end of the year,” he said. “My third book Twelve Stories About Fire, a fiction about love, is in second draft form waiting for me to get back to it after I finish the ‘Buffalo’ book.” The author is planning to have a book reading at the Yorkton Public Library in October, as well as a signing at Coles in the Parkland Mall.

Q: I’m selling my home. Should I be present during the open house?

A: No. The main reason a seller should not be

present at a house showing is because of potential buyers. They may feel uncomfortable about talking openly with their Realtor about your home and how it may or may not fit in with their needs. It’s no reflection on you - they wouldn’t want to offend you, the seller. You have already spent the time presenting your home in its best state. It’s best to let your home speak for itself! Saltcoats Historical Society hosting show The Saltcoats Historical Society is set to present Legends - Country, Soul, and Rock ‘n Roll Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Anne Portnuff Theatre in Yorkton. This dynamic group anchored by Saltcoats native, Devra Straker, includes four other professional vocalists, and this year will be accompanied by a four piece band featuring some of the most talented musicians in Saskatchewan. This group brings the energy, the laughs, the hits,

all with their incomparable vocal talents and stage presence. The crowd favourites of Patsy Cline and Pavarotti will grace the stage, as well as newcomers KD Lang, Tommy Hunter, Trooper, Queen and more. As for the star, Straker was raised in Saltcoats, Sask. and has been working in professional theatre for over two decades with such credits as Patsy Cline in A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline Story, June Carter Cash in Ring of Fire,

Rocky Horror Show and Jesus Christ Superstar. Straker was also chosen to sing for Prince Edward and Countess Sophie to mark the 50th Anniversary of Regina’s Globe Theatre. In addition, Christine Bandelow grew up in Calgary, Alberta. She trained in dance, music and theatre in Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. She has worked in many professional productions as a dancer, singer, actor and choreographer in the-

atres across Canada and the United States and is very grateful to her family for their constant support. Bandelow now calls Edmonton home. Kevin Dabbs had lived in Edmonton, Alberta for 25-years but was born and raised in ‘Winterpeg, Manitscolda’. He has acted, sang, danced and played the drums professionally all over North America for thirty years and is so excited to work with this amazingly talented group

of actors, musicians and crew. Gerrad Everard hails from his family’s cattle and grain farm near Wawanesa, Manitoba. He has performed on four continents, over 30 states in the U.S. and right across Canada. Select credits include Million Dollar Quartet, Sister Act, The Rocky Horror Show and The Wedding Singer. “ROK 2GO” marks Gerrad’s debut album - a taste of country with a rock ‘n roll edge, putting a new spin

on 11 legendary songs. The album is dedicated to both Canadian Farmers and Artists and will be available for purchase at the show. Kiernan Martin Murphy hails from Westlock, Alberta and has credits including Jean Val Jean in Les Miserables, SPAMALOT, Cats, Rock of Ages and Hamlet. He plays Luciano Pavarotti in the PreTenors and was a regular on CBC Radio’s The Irrelevant Show. - Submitted

Saltcoats Historical Society Museum update It has been a busy summer at the Saltcoats Museum, seeing another step in our renovation process come to completion. This season saw interior work done. All of the old lathe and plaster was removed, new insulation put in and the walls and roof covered in cedar planks. Lighting was rewired

and large ceiling fans installed. “We now have a building that is secure and should last another 150 years,” notes the Society. “With new shingles, foundation repairs and interior renos completed, we need to paint inside and out, fix windows and the bulk of the building is done. We are excited to get the

doors reopened to the amazing archives this community has collected.” All the funds for this project have been raised locally by the Historical Society. “We have received no corporate sponsorship,” they note. “So our next big fundraiser to pay the bills is coming in October, when Devra

Straker and friends bring a new Legends show to the Anne Portnuff Theatre in Yorkton for one night only. Given the size and age of our board, it was felt that doing three nights at the Saltcoats Hall with a meal, has become a bigger undertaking than we can currently handle. “And given that there are nine people in the cast, to do

the show justice, a bigger performance stage is required. “We hope that the community understands why we had to make the decision, and still supports our fundraising endeavor.” Funds raised from this concert go back to Saltcoats. - Submitted

New commander assumes duties at Canora RCMP Detachment Courtesy of The Canora Courier On August 26, Sgt. Derek Friesen joined the Canora/Sturgis RCMP as Detachment Commander after spending the previous four-and-a-half years with the Indian Head RCMP. Friesen grew up in Moose Jaw, and like many other Saskatchewan kids, he enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities. He said his main areas of interest were football, baseball and riding bike. “I have wanted to be a police officer ever since I was about nine or ten years old,” said Friesen. “I had the good fortune of going on a few ride-alongs with the RCMP when I was in high school.” After high school, Friesen attended Medicine Hat College, graduating with a police and security diploma. “From there I moved on to the RCMP Depot in Regina and completed the six-month basic train-

ing program,” recalled Friesen. “I got my first posting in Thompson, Man. as a constable and worked there for two-and-a-half years.” Friesen proceeded to gain considerable experience across northern Manitoba. From Thompson he moved on to the fly-in community of Shamattawa, located just south of Hudson’s Bay, where he was stationed for two years. He was then transferred to The Pas, and worked there for two-and-a-half years. While working in northern Manitoba, Friesen said he was very busy and gained considerable experience in dealing with violent crimes, disturbances and mischiefs to property. “I managed to take advantage of some opportunities for fishing, snowmobiling and ATV riding,” said Friesen. The next stepping stone in his career was a transfer to southern Saskatchewan. “I spent the next four years at Coronach, less

Calder

than a 20 km drive from the Montana border,” recalled Friesen. “I went from being incredibly busy to a pretty slow pace with not very many calls. We had the opportunity to do a good deal of proactive policing in and around Coronach including patrolling and traffic enforcement.” Friesen was subsequently promoted to corporal and transferred to Indian Head in March of 2015, where he spent almost four-and-a-half years. In August of this year he was promoted to Canora as sergeant. “One of my first goals is to get to know the community and our large detachment patrol area,” he said. The boundaries of the area served by the Canora Detachment are six miles north of Usherville into the Porcupine Forest to the north and Ebenezer to the south. The eastern boundary is five miles east of Mikado and the western boundary is less than one kilometre east of Invermay. Friesen said he finds it exciting to be a police officer and serve the com-

I don’t like it when people are bullies and take advantage of others. I like to

meet people from all parts of society, whether they’re rich or poor, young or old, or somewhere in between.” As the new Detachment Commander for Canora and Sturgis, Friesen said he’s looking forward to applying the experience he has gained during his

wide-ranging career. He said a big part of his job is finding future police officers. In the past, many Saskatchewan recruits came from farms across the province, but that number has greatly decreased in recent years. “No matter how young they are, I encourage anyone interested in possibly becoming a police officer to contact me or any other detachment members,” said Friesen. “We would be more than willing to answer questions and provide any information they need.” Friesen and his wife Michelle live in Canora with their four children: Owen, 12; Declan, eight; Kais, two and Emilee, their only daughter, is five months old. Friesen said even though he has only been working in Canora for a few weeks, he is impressed by the friendliness of the people. “I’m excited to get involved,” he said. “It’s nice that there are lots of extra-curricular activities in Canora schools. Our older boys are involved in hockey, so that should be a good opportunity to meet people and get integrated into the community.”

Once again the event was held on the second Sunday of September and featured strains of locallygrown garlic, garlic products, recipe books, and the T-shirts which have become a popular symbol of the event. Other featured vendors included: Sharon Rudy with framed photographic art; Norma Woodward with Avon; Alfredo Converso with garlic and garlic products; Nancy Weinhandl with “I Used to Be,” treasures made of recycled materials; Kevin Straub with garlic and garden

Always a popular part of the Festival, we had a number of people make requests for a red/pink version so stay tuned for next year. In past years we have had white, dark blue, purple, yellow and green. “We are excited to be planning next year’s Festival so mark your calendars and save the date for September 13, 2020,” he said.

Speaking of 007, Daniel Craig’s third Bond film is now titled “No Time to Die” and opens in April. This year’s best-actor Oscar winner, Rami Malek, will star as Bond’s adversary. “The Matrix Revolutions” was supposed to conclude the Matrix trilogy in 2003, but guess what ... there will be a “Matrix 4” with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returning as Neo and Trinity. Small wonder, since “Matrix 3” grossed $427 million and Reeves is superhot thanks to the success of “John Wick.” Chris Pine, who’ll embody Walter Cronkite during the JFK assassination coverage in

HOLLYWOOD — Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who ended “Veep” on a high note (despite taking time off to successfully fight cancer), will be heard but not seen in the Pixar animated urban fantasy “Onward” (in theaters March 2020), with superheroes Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, and “Help” Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer, playing elves, trolls and goblins, oh my. Julia’s first onscreen appearance will be in the comedy “Downhill,” about a family ski trip, co-starring Will Ferrell. Ferrell also stars in “Eurovision,” with Rachel McAdams, Demi Lovato and former 007 Pierce Brosnan. Ferrell and McAdams play aspiring musicians representing Iceland in the annual Eurovision song contest. Brosnan plays Ferrell’s father. It also will be a showcase for Dan Stevens’ comedic talents.

Alec Baldwin, who went from his classic “Saturday Night Live” impressions to hosting “The Match Game,” is headed back to the big screen in the comedic/thriller “Pixie,” with Olivia Cooke, Ben Hardy and Daryl McCormack. Pop can tab fundraising supports battle against pediatric cancer Courtesy of The Canora Courier Tomorrow (September 20) marks the eighth birthday of Sophia Hvidston of Canora. Since having been declared in remission from her acute lymphoblastic leukemia over two years ago, she has been free to enjoy her birthdays to the fullest extent. Her mother Shanna said Sophia has received strong support in this fight against cancer ever since her diagnosis at the age of three. Shanna and Sophia’s father, Barry Hvidston, are members of “Small but Mighty SK,” a group of children and their families who are fundraising and battling pediatric cancer. “When we found out how little funding goes to research, we were shocked,” said Shanna. “This is a way to give our “kids” a fighting chance.” The group is financially supported from a number of sources, including a Canora-based business. “Silver for Gold” is the charitable fundraising arm of EcoGenX, an agricultural recycling business owned by Dallon

Sophia Hvidston, 8, of Canora, collected 170 pounds of pop can tabs for Silver for Gold, the charitable fundraising arm of EcoGenX of Canora, in support of pediatric cancer awareness and research. Leger which started in the spring of 2017. “As soon as the business got going, it was important to me that we give back to the community,” said Leger. “I had met the Hvidston family at a winter sno-pitch ball tournament, and decided to support kids dealing with cancer.”

“Silver for Gold” has been collecting pop can tabs to help raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer since 2017. “In our first year we collected one million tabs,” reported Leger. “We doubled that in the second year, and then this year we collected four million tabs from around the prov-

Silver for Gold supports the Gold Walk, held in Saskatoon each September, which is childhood cancer awareness month. On September 7, participants walked through Saskatoon dressed in gold, the colour for the month, to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer. “As a kid I remember collecting pop can tabs for wheelchairs, but that isn’t done much anymore,” recalled Leger. “I wanted to have something that can be collected by both children and adults, and where the kids can get excited about it and really feel like they’ve accomplished something.” This past year, Sophia Hvidston collected a total of 170 pounds of pop can tabs for a return of $102. Shanna Hvidston said her daughter has embraced this fundraising idea wholeheartedly. “She’ll pick them up all the time as she sees them when we’re out walking,” said Shanna. “And she just gleams when her friends collect them and contribute to the cause.” Shanna said there were other families who shared their stories regarding the importance of the “Silver for Gold” campaign at the Saskatoon event. Gale Granrude Gariepy said she and her family were collecting tabs in memory of her son. “Mason passed away on Nov. 25, 2017 of acute

myeloid leukemia,” said Gariepy. “This program is important as these tabs represent the many families like ours that have been affected by cancer.” Marla Bachman said she was involved for her son Joel. “Joel was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2017,” said Bachman. “While he is doing great since the treatment, it is our responsibility to make others aware that cancer does affect children. Collecting tabs is a fun and easy way to get the conversation started and raise funds for research and hopefully a cure.” Leger said getting involved is relatively simple. Pop can tabs can be collected in any bag, box or other container and dropped off at the RM of Keys office in Canora. Anyone looking for more information may contact EcoGenX. After four million tabs were collected this year, Leger has put out a challenge for Saskatchewan to bump that total up to six million tabs for 2020.

JK Metals in Broadview paid 60 cents per pound, which worked out to $2,000.” Each year, “Silver for Gold” is part of the Gold Walk in Saskatoon, hosted by “Small but Mighty SK,” which was co-founded by Jenn Lyster. “With only five per cent of all cancer research funding in Canada (both private and government funded) directed to childhood cancer research, we feel supporting research efforts is key to seeing change in the care of our children,” said Lyster. “Silver for Gold is an incredibly important initiative in supporting our fundraising efforts. By doing something simple, collecting tabs, Silver for Gold encourages others to take action in the fight against childhood cancer. Silver for Gold has raised thousands of dollars for childhood cancer research. Small But Mighty SK is so thankful for the unique collaboration.” This year’s Gold Walk was held on September 7 in Saskatoon and involved approximately 500 people. “September is childhood cancer awareness month,” explained Leger. “Gold is the colour for the month, and participants walk through Saskatoon dressed in gold, raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer.” Leger said the event raised a total of $31,000 this year, including $6,000 from “Silver for Gold.” In addition to the $2,000 for the pop can tabs, Leger raised $4,000 in cash sponsorship from several Saskatchewan businesses, including Ridge Runner Construction of Springside. Leger said the idea for collecting pop can tabs as a fundraiser came from a fond childhood memory.

“Booksmart” (R) — Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein star as Amy and Molly, two hyper-driven academic types who realize, on the eve of graduation, that their tendency to skip the social life to hit the books has left them underachievers in high-school fun. So, they attempt to make up for it all at once by living up their partying dreams in a single night — a hilarious combination of fails, near-misses and triumphs that’s endearing and quite hilarious. The whole experience feels funny and fresh, and is a real coup by actress Olivia Wilde in her feature directorial debut. “Ma” (R) — Kids do stupid stuff, like asking perfect strangers who happen to be adults to purchase alcohol for them. Well, when a group of kids approach loner Sue Ann (Octavia Spencer) to be their 21-plus hookup, they

get much more than they bargained for: access to Ma’s place, where copious amounts of alcohol flow. It’s a secluded basement crash pad for teens, and the host offers a whole lot of personal attention. Few rules apply; just never enter the upstairs area. But when some of the kids try to pull away, Ma gets progressively possessive and vindictive. Billed as a psychological thriller, it’s from Blumhouse, so it’s funny in parts, too — especially Spencer. All in all, a fine rental for a Friday night. “MIB: International” (PG-13) — A young woman (Tessa Thompson) selfrecruits to the famed alienregulating police force Men in Black, where she’s deemed Agent M. She’s sent to prove her mettle in the London office, with High T (Liam Neeson) and the handsome, devilmay-care Agent H (Chris Hemsworth). They set off to uncover a plot involving a couple of extraterrestrial hitmen, a teeny-tiny warrior-knight and a double cross leading back to a DNA-hijacking a group of planetary invaders called

son of God. Pretty brave stuff. The rich source material of an early feminist who unabashedly follows her heart despite the suffocating gender restrictions of her day, particularly a historic woman as maligned as Magdalene — mischaracterized as a prostitute, a disciple who was left out of the historical record — should have been compelling, but I was underwhelmed. It’s beautiful and all the players do the things they should, but it never materializes into the powerful piece it could have been. into the title role of Mary Magdalene, follower of Jesus (Joaquin Phoenix), who left her family and home to join an enigmatic man who was called the

Planning a hunting or fishing trip? Sask Party cuts are making it harder.

Premier Scott Moe is shutting down 19 field offices and eliminating front-line services that hunters and anglers rely on for licenses, permits, and local expertise. It’s getting frustrating. Whether it’s gutting fishing and hunting services, or removing and privatizing services like STC, the Sask Party keeps cutting our rural services.

Let’s protect our rural services – to protect rural life. SGEU_6x222.j20_R0031730690.indd prod2/kj MP Sept 20/19
