Hearts for Youth auction raises over $9,000 By Christopher Swanson mr.chrisswanson@outlook. com The 17th annual Hearts for Youth fundraiser was held on Friday, February 7th, and, as always, it was a great success. Approximately 250 people filled the Kipling Community Centre, raising a total of about $9000 for the Kipling Youth Centre. Due to the fact that the banquet is always held on the Friday prior to Valentine’s Day tables were decorated in a Valentine’s theme with red tablecloths and white napkins and a package of sweet candies for each guest. Attendees enjoyed a wonderful buffet style pork supper, complete with dessert, and, had the chance to bid against each other on a huge variety of items provided by local businesses for the silent auction. There were also several items available through a traditional style auction. Caroline Puffalt and her students entertained the guests as they arrived with a variety of beautiful musical and vocal performances. Emcee Mike Zorn kept the evening running smoothly introducing the evening’s speakers with some comedy, fun facts and words of support for the Kipling Youth Centre. Mayor Buck Bright delivered a special message to the guests and announced the
Annual Volunteer Awards, announcing the Sports and Recreation Award to Lorne Sproat, the Senior Award to Louise Boston, Youth Award to DJ Palmer and the Culture & Heritage Award to Elainy Cacho. After the supper, Gordon Kish took to the stage to begin the live
auction donating his auctioneer talents. Kish gave the usual reminder before beginning “There are no friends at an auction!! We’re here for a little fun and raise a little money for the Youth Centre!” The live auction began with
some homemade Baklava and a variety of pies. Bidding continued on baked goods and even a birdhouse. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all of those that worked tirelessly to help make this year’s Hearts for Youth fundraiser such a fantastic experience.
Melville’s Payton Molnar knows champion bison By Cory Carlick Staff Writer Payton Molnar, of Melville, knows a champion bison when she sees one. She runs her own farm and has taken top prizes for her stock. Molnar says she fell in love with bison as a child, and as a third generation farmer, she is continuing the tradition in her own way. “I’ve grown up in the bison industry,” says Molnar. “In 2015 I became a
proud third generation bison producer by purchasing twelve heifers. Then, in 2019, I decided to expand my herd and purchase another 50 choice cows. I grew up with being more in the meat market of things, but [I] decided to test my luck and see if I could do anything at agribition this year. I ended up doing pretty good.” Payton wound up with Rookie of the Year, Grand Champion Female, Gold Senior and Junior Judging, Gold Yearling
Heifer, Silver Yearling Bull, Bronze Bred-Two Year Old, and placed 4th with her yearling bull. “I placed with all my animals, so I was very excited about that. It was a very cool experience for me, that’s for sure. It starts at the farm. You choose which animals you think are the best, and then they get placed in certain categories. Then, you take them and you drop them off. They each get put in seper-
ate pens, and a judge will walk around and decipher which animal looks the best based on their masculinity, their height, their weight, length of them and depth. That’s pretty much it, and then they do the

Care of fishing stock at Fort Qu’Appelle It might be the dead of winter, but staff at Saskatchewan’s provincial fish hatchery in Fort Qu’Appelle are busy taking care of their newly hatched trout fry to prepare for the stocking season ahead. This year, the hatchery will be releasing a few hundred thousand rainbow, brown and brook trout into waters across the province (tiger, splake and lake trout are produced and stocked in alternate years). All of the eggs collected from the facility’s brood stock in the fall of 2019

measuring from then on. They usually look for what everybody would like in their herd. So you want a nice, healthy strong cow. You want a nice, big hefty bull that’s going to look good in your herd and pro-
have hatched. The priority of the fish culture technicians now is to keep the young fish healthy and disease-free until it is time for their release into the wild, beginning in April. This is done by cleaning their troughs and giving the trout fry regular treatment baths to prevent bacterial infections and parasites. As the fry grow to fingerling size, the technicians will split and move groups of fish to larger tanks to provide them with more space to grow. February is also the time of year when the fish
techs take inventory of the trout breeding stock while inoculating the 1000+ fish living at the brood stock facility. All of the brood stock at the Fort Qu’Appelle Fish Culture Station are inoculated twice a year against common infections to ensure the general population remains in good health and free of disease. The Hip Hop dance group put on an energetic show for students at KCI on February 7.
First Nation Hip Hop dance group performs for KCI audience and presents powerful message Courtesy of Kamsack Times A young First Nation group which performs energetic dance routines combined with speaking presentations between songs, performed for an audience at Kamsack Comprehensive Institute (KCI). On February 7 the Brotherhood First Nation (FN) Hip Hop group of St. Theresa Point, a flyin reserve in Northern Manitoba with a population of around 4,000, presented a powerful message to those in attendance. Solomon Harper, Logan Mason, Jarrett Monais, Joshua Wood, Zareck Mason, Sonny Mason and
Teagan Mason, ranging in age from 16 to 18, began a dance group on their remote northern reserve in 2015. They chose Hip Hop music and choreographed all of their own moves. When they first began performing they “didn’t make a big impression,” but they were enjoying what they did, and soon began to incorporate messages into their routine. “We felt we needed a purpose,” said Harper, the group’s frontman. “We started to include a message to raise awareness about issues like bullying, suicide and drug and alcohol abuse. “We were very impacted by a family friend who
committed suicide. We knew we had to use our performances to show others that you are loved, that people care for you, that you are never alone and there is always someone to reach out to. “No one can take that from you,” Harper said emphatically. “Learn to love yourself.” He encouraged people to “put you fear aside” and reach out to someone and talk about problems and not keep emotions bottled up inside.
Their song One More Light was a message to let the audience know there is always help to be had. “Don’t turn to alcohol or drugs,” he said. “It may dull the pain for a bit, but the problems stay. I urge you to get help. You are loved.” The high energy performance left the members of the group almost breathless between songs, but the young men were determined to speak their message, and between long-drawn breaths, con-
tinued to keep the dialogue going with their audience. The very personable and sincere connection which the group established early on with the audience had the crowd “making some noise” in appreciation. The group is beginning to be noticed for their YouTube videos, some of which have gone viral. This was their first performance in Saskatchewan, arranged by Jamie Desjarlais, outreach
worker at Cote FN Health, together with Rayne Townsend, Indigenous student achievement coach at KCI. Most of their performances have been in Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta. Harper said they have been winning competitions, but they feel their message is the most important part of their performances. The youngsters all attend high school in Winnipeg.

Preeceville branch of Royal Canadian Legion at risk of dissolving Courtesy of Preeceville Progress The Royal Canadian Legion, branch 188 of Preeceville, will be forced to dissolve if it cannot recruit more members, stated a release from the organization. In accordance with Legion bylaws, a rural branch should have a minimum of 10 voting members. Preeceville’s branch is down to three members, continued the release.
In addition to holding a minimum number of members, there must also be Legion members who are willing to hold executive positions of president, secretary and treasurer in order to carry out administrative duties that are required throughout the year. The Royal Canadian Legion was formed in 1925 to help veterans and their families. Over the years it has evolved and adapted to helping more than
just veterans and their families. Legions work to serve their communities, youth and help to perpetuate the memory and deeds of the fallen. Anyone may become a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, as long as they are of federal voting age. There are many benefits available to members of the Royal Canadian Legion. One of the those is receiving the Legion Magazine. The magazine

what is good only for ourselves. Some of us work too much and some of us don’t work at all. We devote little or no time to helping others. As we blindly run into the future, we have little time to remember what happened in the past. “You did not build your great future or fortune by yourself. Let us not forget why we can be successful and why we have what we do have. People sacrificed their lives so you could have a better future. Now it is time for you to step up to the plate and keep the sacred memories alive for generations to come. “Having a Legion card in your wallet can be likened to an insurance policy, you have benefit realization and protection for the future. “Preeceville Legion needs you to become a member or it will have to dissolve on March 31.” For information on

The following information was made available from the Preeceville history book, Lines of the Past. “The Royal Canadian Legion No. 188 Preeceville branch was established by war veterans following the first World War. In the beginning it was known as the Great War Veterans Association. Membership fees were set at $1 for first time members and an annual due of $2 was imposed as a yearly rate. In the beginning the branch had no hall and meetings were held in the homes of various members. “The Legion continued its practice of the War Veteran’s Association Armistice Service held annually to the present which is known as the Remembrance Day Service. During its first years the Legion was busy helping needy comrades and planning ways to raise money to keep the organization operating. “The Legion saw a need for a hall or meeting place and in April 1935, they purchased the Stitz store and lot. The building was situated on the parking lot next to the Reliance Garage. “In 1939, when war broke out the Legion activities took a turn promoting the war effort and providing comforts for those who were leaving for war. “In 1942, a kitchen was added to the hall and in 1945 when the Second World War ended, soldier rehabilitation became a priority. “In 1946, a memorial fund was started by the community to build a memorial rink in Preeceville to honour comrades of the district who lost their lives in the Second World War. The rink was completed in 1949 and served until 1976 when the new one was built. The Legion purchased a large recreation centre from the Yorkton Air Force and had it moved in to Preeceville to be used by the Legion for its own purposes.”

Canora youngster meets NHL superstar through Make-A-Wish Foundation Courtesy of The Canora Courier At the age of 11, Kayden Harder has gone through more life-altering challenges than many of us face in a lifetime. When he was around four or five, Harder started to have a reaction to being in sunlight, and was subsequently diagnosed as epileptic. Several years later he found out that his mother, Kristen, has breast cancer. Most recently, last June he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. It was at this point that Harder was referred to the Make-AWish Foundation. As is standard practise at Make-A-Wish, he was given three wishes. His number one wish was to meet Connor McDavid, captain of the Edmonton Oilers, and that wish came true on January 30 in Edmonton. In his battle with epilepsy, Harder has had up to 100 seizures per day when in sunlight for too
long, said Kristen. “Last summer he got very sick and his kidneys were failing. He had to be transferred to Saskatoon,” said Kristen. “After his diagnosis with diabetes, his pediatric neurologist referred him to the MakeA-Wish Foundation. The form of epilepsy he has is very treatment resistant, so we are waiting to go to Vancouver for more evaluation and treatment.” Harder was approved by Make-A-Wish in August, and when he found out, “he was so thankful that he cried.” Initially, Harder met a representative from MakeA-Wish, and was asked to make three wishes. for the Canora Peewee Cobras, so it was hardly a surprise that his first two choices were hockey related. He also plays lacrosse for the Sturgis Trojans and runs on the cross-country team at CCS (Canora Composite School). Added to his very active lifestyle, after his diagnosis with diabetes he had to find time to take seven daily insulin injections spread throughout the day. “Cross-country races are often at noon, so that tends to conflict with his noon injection,” said Kristen. “Of course, hockey games are at all different times, so it becomes quite a challenge.” A representative from Make-A-Wish met with Kayden for an indepth discussion in an effort to thoroughly get to know him. From this interview, the recommendation was made to grant the Connor McDavid wish. “The representatives and all their staff are really incredible people,” said Kristen. “Their co-ordinator told me, ‘I have the best job in the world.’ It’s amazing how they care about these kids so much.” Kristen said the rest of the family, including brother Brandon and father Bryan, found out about the decision around the beginning of December, but purposefully kept Kayden in the dark until a special Grades 5 to 8 assembly was held at CCS on January 24, where most of the students weren’t really sure what was going on. “Two of the teachers, Dustin Nielsen and Curtis Baillie, set it up as hockey-related challenges and activities,” recalled Kristen. “But near the end they said, “there’s one more thing that’s never happened at CCS,” and then they played the Make-
Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Kayden Harder of Canora met Connor McDavid, captain of the Edmonton Oilers, on January 30 in Edmonton. A-Wish reveal video where Kayden found out he was going to meet Connor McDavid. He was so overwhelmed, he put his head down and may have been crying, I couldn’t tell. But everyone applauded and they were all patting him on the back. It was really special.” On January 27, the Harder family was off to Edmonton. The entire trip was courtesy of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “On the flight, the West Jet crew announced Kayden’s Make-A-Wish trip and everyone on the plane applauded,” said Kristen. “He even got to meet the pilot. “When we got to Edmonton, we were treated so well. We
received limousine transportation everywhere. Brandon and Kayden had never even been in a limo before.” During their time in Edmonton, the Harder family stayed at the Fantasyland Hotel and had passes to all the attractions in the West Edmonton Mall, including the Waterpark and Marine Life. On January 29 the Canora family attended a game in Edmonton between the Oilers and their archrivals from Calgary, which was won by the Flames in a shootout. “We all got to fist bump the Oilers before the game,” said Kristen. The Harder family was in private seats during the game, served by
their own waitress. The next day the Harders received a full tour of Rogers Arena, attended an Oilers practise and got invited into the team’s dressing room. “We met a number of the Oilers staff and the players,” said Kristen. “They were all so wonderful, they stopped and talked to us and made us all feel welcome.” McDavid didn’t practise that day, but he joined them in the dressing room and was introduced to Kayden. “At first Kayden was acting all casual and said, “Hey Connor” but then he got pretty nervous,” recalled Kristen. “He gave Kayden his jersey with his name and number on it and they had a nice conversation. He put on a Canora Cougars T-shirt and shot a video with Kayden, wishing everyone on his Canora Peewee Cobras hockey team the best of luck in their upcoming games.” Harder took part in a media scrum, where he was given a microphone and had the opportunity to ask the players questions, just like a sports reporter.

Another special moment came when Harder signed a one-day contract with the Oilers, brought to him by one of the team’s coaches. “Spending time with the Oilers and meeting Connor McDavid, one of his idols, was Kayden’s dream,” said Kristen. “When we, as a family, look back on the experience now, it seems kind of surreal. I still almost don’t believe it actually happened.” But it did happen. And Kayden and his family have the life-long memories to prove it.

You might have thought you had stepped through a time portal had you visited the former Ebenezer School this weekend. You would have walked into the gymnasium to the sound of battle, sword ringing off sword, axe rattling off shield, polearm fending off sword. The combatants were members of the Loki’s Brood Viking Group dedicated to the re-enactment of all things Viking. The group, with members not just from Yorkton, but points across Saskatchewan and Manitoba, met to hone the fighting skills as well as work on other Viking skills from putting the feathers on their arrows, to making clothes from the era.

Speed skating a high octane sport By Cory Carlick Staff Writer Saskatchewan definitely punches above its weight in the Olympic sport of speed skating. In 2018, two of Team Canada’s racers were from Saskatchewan, and at Sochi, there were four. In much of Canada, it’s hard to find a speed skating track, but if you ever wanted to try your hand at the sport, Melville has its own short track facility. Just a short hop away, the Melville Speed Skating Club has its own program, and is administerd by Sask Speed Skating, the provincial regulatory body for the sport. Kim Engel, who runs the Melville club, says it is a sport that can be learned by all sorts of individuals
at different skill levels. “We have a learn to skate program for any kid six years or under – or people that have never skated before. That’s our group 1-2. Then we have our competitive group, which is our group 3-4. So it’s different varying levels of competitiveness that they’re in, and different skill levels. My twins are six, and they’re in group one – the learn to skate. My oldest son is almost 12 and he’s in our group 4, the competitive stream. We have any kind of kid,” Engel explains. “We have kids that are brand new that are trying to skate, we have kids from other sports, like hockey that have switched to speed skating. It really just depends on their
interest. Our biggest thing, first and foremost, is that our kids have fun. That’s really what we focus on. Then we focus on the different skills, [because] we want them to get better. We want them to get faster. We want kids to want to do speed skating [and] have fun while they’re there.” It is also known for being a particularly inclusive sport. “The biggest thing we find with speed skating is that everybody cheers for everybody,” Engel says. “If you go to a meet or a competition, there’s no club against club, or parent against parent, or skater against skater. Everybody is cheering everybody else on. As they get older, it’s really neat to see how

Watrych awarded major scholarship By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer Yorkton Regional High School student Connor Watrych has been awarded a major scholarship. Watrych was one of 88 students travelling to Toronto the weekend of Feb. 2, to interview in the final selection process for the Loran Scholarship
Foundation. When he arrived home the telephone rang Sunday, where he learned he was one of 36 to be awarded the multi-faceted scholarship valued at $100,000, to cover four years of undergraduate studies. “I was super, super excited. I was kind of at a loss for words,” said the Grade 12 student. Watrych said hav-
ing spent time with the 88 nominees, he knew it would be a difficult decision for those making the decision. “I think everybody there was deserving,” he said. The final interview process in Toronto mimicked the regional one Watrych had already undergone, adding much of the focus was
on how the nominees felt they were a good fit for the award. In that regard, the award is about more than providing the 36 recipients with an education, said Watrych. “The goal is to build leaders for the future. They see it as an investment,” he said. To build the foundation for those leaders the

award offers more than post-secondary education. Recipients are expected to spend three summer internships, one in a province different from their home province, or where they attend school, and one summer abroad, explained Watrych. The internships must be diverse as well, covering policy development one year, and working with a non-profit another. As part of the award Watrych said recipients are also matched with mentors at whatever university they attend. “I think the coolest part is mentor,” he said, adding their role incudes helping the recipients get involved in the school and community, in addition to helping in general with adapting to university. This summer the recipients will also gather at Algonquin Park in Ontario for some team building. “We’ll be living out of
backpacks and canoeing through the park,” said Watrych. At present Watrych is not sure where he will attend university although McMaster and the University of British Columbia are topping his list at present. “I want to study biochemistry with hopes of getting into medicine after that,” he said. Watrych was one of four recipients from Saskatchewan. The others were; Kaiden Thompson from Indian Head, Kylie Flynn from Saskatoon, and Sabah Sharif from Regina. Those interviewed, but not among the 36 recipients were still eligible for a $5,000 finalist award. Watrych was most recently given the youth Citizen Recognition Award by the city of Yorkton and was the quarterback of the Provincial Championship winning YRHS Raider Gridders.

Heritage Day celebrates cultures at WDM
Canada is a diverse country, and the Western Development Museum held Heritage Day in Yorkton with keynote speakers talking about the importance of cultural learning and adjustment. “Heritage Day is an annual event we do through the national trust,” explains Solange Massicotte, Education and Public Programming Coordinator.
“This year is 20/20 Vision: Bringing the Past Into the Future. We have a few people talking today. We have Jennifer Fedun, from the City of Yorkton. She’s the new historian, and she’s talking about an image scanner and how she’s going to put photos online [with] her process of doing that. She’s going to do a demo today of how to do that, which
is actually interesting especially for archives and how she works [so] deeply with them [in terms of] putting them online. “We also have Edith Montesclaros from the East Central Newcomer Welcome Centre, and she’s going to talk about her experience coming here, as well as her role as an executive director
at the company welcoming newcomers and their stories [as well as] experiences being here, which ties in wel with 20/20 in the future. She ties in Yorkton community that way, especially when it comes to the culture and heritage.” For more information, visit http:// www.wdm.ca/
Make sure you promote your city By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer A community needs to have a sense of pride in what it has to offer. That is the message those attending the regular Yorkton Chamber of Commerce luncheon Thursday heard from guest speaker Pat Fiacco, former Mayor of Regina. Fiacco related how he was on an airplane and overheard a conversation between someone from Regina and someone from Toronto talking. The Toronto man mentioned he was headed to Regina for a conference, to which the Regina man asked “why come to Regina ...?” “I couldn’t believe it ... I never forgot that,” said Fiacco. Later Fiacco would meet with students and found more news he was not expecting to hear. “What I was hearing was like a punch in the stomach,” he said, noting 75 per cent of students were not looking at the University of Regina, and most were not looking to stay in Regina, or Saskatchewan. The reason, their parents had instilled in the students there were no opportunities locally. Fiacco said it made him think of his own parents arriving in Regina in 1957 with no money, but an expectation of the opportunities the city offered. Fiacco would become Regina Mayor in 2000, and when visiting Rochester, NY, said I love New York signs were all over, adding he came to realize “it’s not about those three words, it’s about a feeling.” So Fiacco said he came back to Regina with a rather simple plan. “We needed to copy what New York was doing,
but design it for Regina,” he said. Over the ensuing years an I Love Regina campaign was created through consultation, culminating in an inaugural I Love Regina Day. “The stage was full of positivity and it was contagious,” said Fiacco, adding it needs to go beyond the slogan. “Words are good but feelings are better,” he said, adding the effort created “a change in the psyche of our city. “You can’t just have a slogan without backing it up.” The back-up includ-
ed Fiacco establishing a Mayor’s Task Force on the Future of Regina, in order to bring various stakeholders to the table to get them moving forward together. The same general approach can work in Yorkton, suggested Fiacco. “Yorkton here, you’re a sleeping giant,” he offered, noting the Gallagher Centre an envy of many communities, the Western Development Museum is a draw, there are local golf courses, the city is close to lakes, there is the annual film festival, all positives. Fiacco then noted the city slogan ‘where good
things happen,” which he said can be an attitude if people buy into it. But, do we in Yorkton do a good job of telling the world about what this city
offers, asked Fiacco. “I don’t have to tell you this but Yorkton has huge potential,” he said, adding “it’s time you start blowing your own horn.
“You need to tell the world about the good things that happen ... You’ve got to tell your story. It’s not bragging. It’s just the truth.”

Rich and nutty comfort food for breakfast Bread pudding is a tasty concoction made with simple ingredients that, when combined, pack a delicious punch. Bread pudding often can be crafted from ingredients one likely already has in the kitchen. In addition, recipes can be adjusted depending on the number of servings desired. While bread pudding may be thought of as a dessert, it also can make for a tantalizing meal at breakfast or brunch. Ideal for warming up on winter days, this “Breakfast Bread Pudding With Pecan Crumble,” courtesy of The American Pecan Council and Brandon Matzek, founder of the culinary website Kitchen
Konfidence, is sure to be a hit. This satisfying dish also can be prepared ahead of time and then garnished before warming and serving.

Breakfast Bread Pudding With Pecan Crumble Yield: 6 to 8 servings
Lightly butter a 9x13 baking dish, then place cubes of brioche in the baking dish in an even layer. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugars, vanilla, bourbon, and a pinch of sea salt. Sprinkle toasted pecans over the brioche, then pour the wet ingredient mixture evenly all over the bread, making sure it’s covered thoroughly. Cover and let sit in the fridge for at least 2 hours (or up to overnight).
For the bread pudding: •1⁄2 tablespoon unsalted butter, for greasing •1 pound brioche bread, cut into 3⁄4-inch cubes •8 eggs •2 cups milk •1⁄2 cup heavy cream •1⁄2 cup sugar •1⁄2 cup packed light brown sugar •1 tablespoon vanilla

To bake the bread pudding: Preheat the oven to 350 F and remove the baking dish from fridge. Meanwhile, prepare the crumble: Add flour, pecans, dark brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and butter to a medium bowl, and using your fingertips, rub ingredients together until evenly combined and clumps start to form. Sprinkle the surface of the bread evenly with the crumbs. Bake until the bread pudding is puffy and the top is golden, about 45 minutes to an hour. To serve, cut squares of warm bread pudding, and place on small plates. Top with sliced persimmons and maple syrup, if desired.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My poodle mix, “Jester,” is a sweet and energetic dog — until it’s time to go to the vet. When the carrier kennel comes out, he begins to tremble and whine, and resists being put in. He is always very stressed at the vet office. How can I help him be less scared about visiting the vet? — Sarah in Chicago DEAR SARAH: You’re not alone in this. Many pets get extremely anxious when they have to go to the veterinarian, and it can be a stressful experience for the owner, too, who knows their pet is so worried and stressed out. Talk to the vet for suggestions and strategies to minimize your dog’s anxiety on the way to the office.
checkup, call the vet’s office and remind them that your dog will need extra TLC during the visit. This way, the vet is prepared, too. Spend time desensitizing Jester to the carrier cage. This will take a while but will make it easier to place him into the cage for any trip — not just the vet visit. Jester strongly associates the carrier with vet visits. You need to help him associate it with other things, like fun and treats. Bring the carrier out periodically and sit next to it, placing Jester’s favorite toy nearby. Don’t force him into it or, really, do anything — just have the carrier cage out while you go about your day. Each time he approaches the carrier calmly, without barking or trembling, give Jester a little treat. Ideally, you want him to climb freely into the carrier, expecting a treat. Three simple ways to eat healthier Diets can be difficult to navigate. Since no two people are the same, a healthy diet that satisfies one person won’t necessarily satisfy another. Vegetarians might be perfectly happy without chicken or steak, while some people might shudder at the notion of never indulging in the occasional filet mignon. While the most effective diets tend to be those that emphasize nutrition while still allowing individuals to indulge in some of their favorite dishes in moderation, the following are three ways that everyone, regardless of their personal preference, can eat healthy every day. 1. Eat lots of whole-grain carbohydrates. Fad diets tend to paint
carbs as the enemy, but various studies have shown just how integral carbohydrates, particularly whole-grain varieties, are to a healthy diet. One such study published in 2018 in the medical journal The Lancet Public Health found that diets that got between 50 and 55 percent of their calories from plant-based carbohydrates like whole grains were associated with a lower risk of mortality than low-carb diets that favored animal-derived protein sources. When buying carbs at the grocery store, shoppers can opt for whole-grain varieties, including wholegrain pastas, brown rice and cereals. That won’t require sacrificing flavor and makes for a simple
“Parasite” (R) — South Korea’s sleeper hit is a black comedy that effortlessly tackles social aspirations and class conflict. The Kim family lives in a squalid basement, with no prospects and no resources. Son Ki-woo, egged on by a college-bound peer, fakes some credentials and takes a job as a tutor to the daughter of the filthy rich Parks family. Buoyed by the lavish lifestyle, Ki-woo plots to secure jobs for all of his family members so that they can live the good life by association. Getting there was only
part of the battle, though. The ends inevitably begin to unravel, with macabre consequences. Written and directed by acclaimed director Bong Joon Ho. “Harriet” (PG-13) — From self-liberation to American human-rights icon, Harriet Tubman (Cynthia Erivo) takes center stage in a stirring and inspirational biopic. When her husband, a freeman, attempts to secure her release, the farm’s owner refuses. Tubman is labeled a troublemaker and sent to be sold, but escapes, making the arduous trek to Pennsylvania and winning her freedom. But it’s not enough, so she returns for her family again and again, bringing home many slaves in the process. The supporting cast includes Janelle Monae as a savvy

That may sound like a lot, but it’s pretty easy to incorporate all those healthy fruits and veggies into a diet. note that diets rich in fruits and veggies can help people control their weight and may even reduce their risk for certain diseases, including cancer. 3. Kick added sugars to the curb. Avoiding added sugars is another way anyone, regardless of their food preferences, can eat healthier every day. New program focuses on nature Interested students at Saltcoats School are getting some additional hands-on education regarding nature. “It’s really just an off-shoot of our birding group (Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association),” explained Rob Wilson. Wilson, a long-time educator and member of the birding group, said he came to recognize young people no longer connect with nature as they once did. “Kids are getting really disconnected from the natural world,” he said, adding they seem far more connected to the Internet and social media than being outside listening to birds or chasing frogs. So Wilson approached the school about offering an after school program for students who are interested in learning more about nature. After the proper vetting, the program was
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Thomas and everyone at Forrester Creations threw Zoe a surprise birthday party. Katie continued to share Sally’s confidential medical diagnosis. Carter offered Zoe a special gift. Vinny called out Thomas for how his plan was affecting Douglas. Katie made Wyatt promise to keep Sally’s secret to himself. Brooke found Thomas’ birthday party for Zoe very suspicious. Ridge made it clear to Brooke exactly what was keeping them apart. Vinny pleaded with Thomas not to make the same mistake twice. Flo welcomed Shauna back to her apartment. Wyatt reached out to Sally. Brooke encouraged Liam to make things right with Hope. Zoe tried to connect with Douglas. Wait to See: Thomas makes the ultimate sacrifice. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Marlena made a sacrifice to save John’s life. Stefano and Chad came to blows. Ben and Clyde’s prison escape went awry. approved and has started modestly at the school. Wilson said he has a rather simple goal. “I hope to get them engaged with paying attention to nature,” he said, adding he’s taking a very hands-on approach. Wilson said it starts with getting youth outside so they can observe nature. He then wants them to record what they see, write it down so they have a record from which they can then share with others. But it starts through observation. “Go out and see what you’ve got,” he said. The group; the Citizens Science Group, has two projects already on the go. “I’ve got a few kids that are pretty keen,” said Wilson. Thanks to some help from Kenn Wood who built a bird feeder for the group, they are observing birds on the school grounds. The students, anyone from Kindergarten to Grade 8 can participate in the group which meets over lunch hours, or after who pushed her off the balcony. Kayla smuggled “Steve” out of the hospital. Sarah and Eric received news about the bone marrow search for Mickey. Kristen kept a secret from Brady, even as they grew closer. Ciara hid Ben at the DiMera gatehouse. Shawn confronted Princess Gina and tried to get through to his mother. “Steve” continued to deceive Kayla. Wait to See: Gabi and Eli’s wedding begins. GENERAL HOSPITAL Valentin ran into Lulu. Carly and Bobbie made solid plans. Chase followed up on a police report filed by a waitress at Kelly’s. Lucas struggled with flashbacks. Molly vocalized her opinions. Brad thanked Willow. Wilson said he has the students working on ideas which “show how the schoolyard can be shared with snakes.”

school, have helped install the feeder. Wilson said they are now doing a small experiment. Initially the feeder was filled with fat, with students recording which birds show up to eat. Next they will fill the feeder with canola seed and observe whether that
attracts a different group of birds. While admitting it’s a rather simplistic experiment Wilson added, “the whole point is to try and get kids a little bit more interest in nature.” It also gets the youth outside “away from the computer,” he noted.
The feeder provides an opportunity to learn about specific bird species, such as going to a book to show how visiting cedar waxwings differ from Bohemian waxwings. The feeder also attracted a rather rare to the area pileated woodpecker which is a very
