I can see where this kinship was lost. In the garden. Many of the stories I have read that changed my perspective on gardening or greenhousing was altered from admiring our historical (great) grandparents saying that they felt bad that their closest neighbors had had a “bad” season and did not have much to eat that winter. They had a caring concern, had already planned ahead to grow more than they needed and they gladly shared their food with them. This same selfless act changes the atmosphere of growing enough for “us” to “just in case someone else” and formed strong and humble relationships. While you may think this old school society is long gone, it is merely a small burning ember in a fire than can quickly grow and I have seen it. For example no one likes to weed the garden because it is tedious and foreboding as if it will never end (and sometimes is true!). The selfless nature of gardening exclaims if you help your neighbor then they will help you. Remarkably it seems that time itself changes to favor you and the work is done quickly and well enough to push you further into giving effort and reclaim to your caring neighbor “Let’s go get your garden finished now!” I have witnessed this as I helped

PROBLEM SOLVED Benjamin Galay One of my favorite hobbies is to study and form discussion about the Great Depression. This topic is not light reading for just anyone to sit down and enjoy at the end of the day, but for myself I relish a look back at what people will and must do to survive. The 1930/40’s was a time when everything was uncertain in the world — except the needs of family, and yet it was well understood that wants were secondary. In other words food, water, shelter, health, clothing, fellowship and more were essential and so much else was not worth the pursuit in most cases. It is my humble belief that the reason all else was secondary is that while the basic needs you had may have possibly been met, perhaps your immediate neighbor or less fortunate folk in your community were still lacking. Perhaps I have been searching for a secret and am just admitting this now, but looking to this difficult era in history creates a longing in me for a community where everyone cared. A movement common to all that you had enough to eat, were warm, were given a helping hand without feeling guilty or obligated, and I believe

others finish their gardening they responded in kind to finish mine. The garden is for common good, and has slowly eroded away to barely a friendly nod to a stranger in the grocery store. If you would like to conduct a social experiment, next time you are in a grocery store say hello to someone and then offer to pay for some of their produce. Helping someone to be fed reveals a truth to us all, that we all need help and the garden is where the healing can begin. The reason I have highlighted this vision first is to showcase a truth of what has happened to our food security, and fundamental efforts of gardening. Not that long ago I can say if I was living on a property that had a rhubarb plant, I was indifferent about the plant itself. Yet in the middle of the following winter I was short on funds and yet needed to buy groceries. Rhubarb was being sold in the store that day for an exorbitant price and when I was complaining later to a group of friends, one went to his freezer and pulled out and a bag and gave it to me for free. — And carrots and potatoes… Affording healthy produce is not getting easier, and with the economy anything can change quickly. But growing for yourself will feel unfulfilling at some point. As a grower of various produce and medicines, in this introductory letter I would like to

leave you with a changed perspective of the other people who live around you as well as the future. I am not a expert in any regard towards growing fruits and vegetables and such, but I have a growing concern that while I may be doing alright; food in the fridge, bills paid, income coming in – perhaps my neighbor is not in the same place. If the future looks as uncertain as the Great Depression, then I dare say that a garden is a battlefield you and those around you can defend each other with. You grow the potatoes, they grow some carrots, another grows peas, another some grain and everyone gets an equal share. Perhaps this grows into a larger community effort, and a new barter economy can open up. The benefits begin to multiply if your perspective is allowed to shift; local fresh food, very inexpensive food, less work, better friendships… if any

of these sound like something you desire you are likely not alone. May I encourage you to consider others first, just go help a neighbor as I am certain they will not say no. Begin a conversation about helping each other with food sustainability, food security, food prices and then the phrase, “Hey, let’s help each other.” Then garden together and feed each other with its bounty. Not complicated, just simply do it and report the results to each other. Knowing that someone

is actively caring and concerning for your well being is priceless, reciprocating is the spirit of love. It is believed that man originally fell from grace in a garden, perhaps the secret to a joyous life and rebuilding is in the garden as well. Results of water quality sampling released

Recently, the Water Security Agency (WSA) released the first results of its ongoing water quality testing on the North Saskatchewan River and Saskatchewan River systems as a result of the Husky oil spill. The results show no exceedances of the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines or the provincial drinking water standards. However, exceedances were found

relative to the Canadian Protection of Aquatic Life Guidelines. One of the samples had an exceedance of toluene, and one sample had an exceedance of pyrene. This additional sampling will help WSA make an informed decision on when and what is required to turn on the water treatment plant intakes for the communities impacted downstream of the spill site.

WSA is undertaking a water safety assessment to further evaluate water quality in order to reopen the intakes. Specifically, WSA has requested further data from Husky and other agencies involved in the technical working group specific to drinking water quality. This includes the following components: Where is the remaining oil that has not been captured (evaporated

off, degraded microbiologically, captured within river bed sediment or elsewhere); What form is the oil in, is it a potential risk to the waterworks, and how will it respond or react to various factors such as flooding, or spring breakup conditions; What short-term and long-term monitoring program will be required; and Will any additional

pre-treatment processes have to be considered for the existing water treatment plants. Upon receiving this information, which is expected in the coming weeks, WSA will evaluate the findings as part of the water safety assessment and make a decision on when the water intakes can be reopened. In general, the intakes from the North Saskatchewan River will

be reopened when: There is low risk of oil reappearing in the source water; There is a risk of oil appearing but monitoring can detect this and intakes can be shut down prior to oil entering the system (back-up water systems must be in place); and Water treatment plants can treat oil that may enter the plant.

Nominations open for volunteers Today Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield encouraged residents to nominate outstanding volunteers for the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal. The 2016 nomination period will be open until October 18. “Have you ever wondered how you can honour a special person in your community, your workplace, or your volunteer organization who has made outstanding contributions?” Solomon Schofield said. “Our province created the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal

to enable us to pay tribute to those individuals who merit public recognition for their remarkable generosity. I encourage you to consider nominating a deserving individual this year, so that we can thank them and celebrate their work.” The Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal was established in 1995 to recognize volunteers and those who demonstrate exceptional community involvement. Selected recipients will receive the Volunteer Medal from the Lieutenant

Governor at a ceremony at Government House in Regina in the late spring of 2017, during the 150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada. Nominees must be current or former long-term residents of the province and Canadian citizens. Nominations are not accepted posthumously. Groups and organizations are ineligible to be nominated, along with sitting members of Parliament, the Legislature or the judiciary. To date, 184 people have received

the award for their contributions to their communities. The province strives to recognize individuals and groups that make Saskatchewan an even better place to live. Nomination calls are also open for the 2017 Saskatchewan Order of Merit, the 2016 Premier’s Service Club Awards, and this year’s Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Public Service. Environmental facts

More people than ever are aware that certain behaviors can be detrimental to environmental health. You may understand the basics about overflowing landfills, waste washing up on beaches or global climate change, but you may not be aware of the specifics regarding these issues and others. The following are some enlightening facts about the environment, courtesy of EarthEcho International and Solar Energy World. 1. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours. 2. Around 25,000 trees are cut down each day just to produce toilet paper. 3. Approximately five million tons of oil produced in the world each year ends up in the ocean.

4. Seventy-eight percent of marine mammals are threatened by accidental deaths, such as getting caught in fishing nets. 5. On average, one supermarket goes through 60 million paper bags each year. Scores of plastic bags are used as well. 6. A glass bottle can take 4,000 years to decompose. 7. Rainforests are being cut down at a rate of 100 acres per minute. 8. The United States is the No. 1 trash-producing country in the world. 9. Ford Motor Company has said that 75 percent of every vehicle is recyclable. 10. If the entire world lived like the average American, we’d need five planets to provide enough resources.

tions, and an undeniable positive energy come to the Brain Boogie with survivors and their families. “This group is a safe place where we are comfortable sharing our struggles and our successes. The group seems to “get it” when we share personal stories,” said one survivor about the programs funded by the Brain Boogie. The Yorkton Brain Boogie is a golf tournament and steak dinner.

Registration is at 1 p.m., first tee off at 2 p.m. and supper starts around 5:30 p.m. Organizers are still looking for prizes and donations to show the community’s support for local survivors. The Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association

I’ve beaten lung cancer and recently had skin cancer surgery in my ear. The vitamin D situation never goes away, and the doctors keep changing my meds. One of the doctors claims that my vitamin D count is almost toxic (my blood levels of vitamin D are 121 from my rheumatologist and 145 from my internist), and I have been taken off any meds with vitamin D in them, but it’s still high. I am feeling OK now and want to forget the whole matter of the vitamin D level. Your opinion would be appreciated. — Anon. ANSWER: I admire your spirit for life, even if I don’t agree with your

diet. I have seen only one case of vitamin D excess in my career. It is very rare if people are taking less than 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily, so I suspect you were taking much higher doses at some point. When I hear that multiple doctors may have been taking care of you, I worry that more than one was prescribing high doses of vitamin D. There also have been cases of manufacturing errors and excess fortification of milk, but these are quite rare. Vitamin D is normally stored in the liver, with the fat cells becoming a second reservoir. The toxicity of vitamin D is

due to high calcium levels, which can cause confusion, nausea and vomiting, and muscle weakness. Toxic levels can be treated with short-term prednisone, but that isn’t necessary unless there are symptoms or a dangerously high calcium level. By the time your letter is published, your vitamin D levels should have returned to normal. If they haven’t, it’s time to look for a rare cause, such as sarcoidosis, where occasionally the abnormal cells can make vitamin D. The booklet on sodium, potassium and mineral discusses the importance of these and other

substances to our health. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 202W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother was diagnosed a few years ago with macular degeneration (both wet and dry). Is this disease hereditary? What can I do to prevent myself from getting this disease? — K. studies have shown that vitamins, especially B vitamins, can reduce risk by a third or so. Since a combination of zinc and vitamins A, C and E was shown to help reduce progression of macular degeneration, many experts recommend it for prevention as well. PICKS OF THE WEEK The Nice Guys (R) — It’s an old-school noir detective thriller put upon two lowlife private detectives, set in a suitably sleazy corner of 1970s Los Angeles. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling co-star as Jackson Healy and Holland March, be-stubbled PI’s who are just chin-whiskers away from being a loan shark and a con artist, respectively. With help from March’s observant 13-year-old daughter (Angourie Rice), they stumble into a missingperson case that is actually the loose thread in a deadly scheme concerning an adult-film star and the U.S. auto industry. Director Shane Black first made his mark with the “Lethal Weapon franchise and a slew of other buddy-cop comedy-action flicks. This film is more in line with his 2006 re-entry “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, which showed more allegiance to Old Hollywood cinema and less interest in the ‘80s and ‘90s Hollywood exploding-helicopter era. What are you as an Agriculture Producer growing today vs tomorrow and into the future? Will you be delivering your Farm Products in their raw state or will you be taking the next step and going the “Value Added approach? These are questions, that if you have not asked yourself so far, you may want to do so and relatively soon! Often we are so focused on growing more of what we already produce and doing so more efficiently, that we lose sight of what the World of tomorrow will be looking for and indeed demanding. This is not to say that the staples in our Industry; Corn, Wheat, Canola, Beef, Pork and Chicken, are going away. But rather to question what new opportunities are emerging. Largely driven by the quickening pace of the growth in the World population the need for products that are provided by Agriculture is about to explode. Generally when Farming is discussed we immediately think about food products. How about meeting the demands of Pharmaceuticals and Health supplies like Medication and Vitamins? Clothing and Vehicle manufacturing from crops like Hemp? Energy sources to replace the need for Oil and current forms of Power? The drive to supply our needs for these products through Agriculture rather than non-renewable resources has been alive for some time now. However, the ever increasing demands are pushing the need for further research and innovation at an increasing pace. Being on the forefront of technology will prove to be key for Agriculture Producers as we head forward into a changing market place. For those who have already turned their eye to the needs of tomorrow the ability to stay on top of Consumer Demand will be somewhat easier and give an edge to sustainability and competiveness. The Farm of tomorrow, are you informed?

Parents have enough to worry about when school is in session — lunch shouldn’t be one of them! A good lunch is balanced, formed around a dependable main course and punctuated with a solid supporting cast of nutrient-packed sides, a low- or no-calorie drink, and even a little treat. Don’t worry if your child wants basically the same lunch every day. Just include these nutritious choices that we call the four elements to a perfectly packed lunch. Here are some tips that will keep your child’s school mealtimes healthy and happy all year long! School Lunch Safety Tips: • Keep food-prepara-

tion areas in the kitchen clean. Wash countertops, cutting boards, utensils and your hands in hot, soapy water. And don’t let the family pet jump up on kitchen counters. • After preparing lunches, remember to immediately return unused portions of perishable foods like cheeses, deli meats and mayonnaise to the refrigerator. Don’t let them sit out on the counter. • Make sure that cold foods are cold before packing them in a lunchbox. If possible, prepare the lunch the night before and store it in the refrigerator. (This also takes the edge off the mad morning rush!) • Insulated lunch bags

or boxes are the best way to keep food at a safe temperature until noon. Nestle a frozen juice pouch or ice pack inside, and sandwiches will stay extra cool. • At school, instruct the kids to store their lunchbox out of direct sunlight and away from radiators or other heaters if possible. • Sandwiches made with refrigerated items such as luncheon meats, cheese and tuna salad should be carried in an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack. That way they should be safe to eat after two to three hours without refrigeration. • Keep hot foods — like soups, stews or chilies — hot. In the morning, bring the food to a boil and then immediately pour into a hot, sterile vacuum bottle. (Sterilize the vacuum bottle with boiling water.) Lunch foods that can be eaten at room temperature include: —Peanut butter —Jams and jellies

—Breads, crackers, cereals —Clean fruits and vegetables —Dried meats, such as beef jerky —Baked products, such as cookies and cakes —Canned meat or poultry products that are eaten immediately after opening Select healthy choices: Meats should be lean (no salami or bologna), breads should be whole wheat and condiments should be used sparingly. —Turkey or roast beef and Swiss on wheat bread with a drizzle of low-fat Italian dressing instead of mayo and loaded with produce (if you can get away with it.) Shredded coleslaw mix (cabbage and carrots) is a great sandwich addition. It stays crisp, adds a nice crunch to a sandwich, and is high in vitamins A and K. —Sliced ham, cheese and Triscuits —PB&J (check your school’s policy on nuts and nut products first)

made on whole-wheat bread with a pure-fruit jelly like Smucker’s Simply Fruit. —Thermos of hot soup —Grilled chicken breast –Hard-boiled eggs —Tuna or cubed chicken tossed with light mayo, mustard, celery and carrot Lunch sides with substance: Only one in four kids consumes the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, so if you pack a lunch without produce you’re missing a golden opportunity. As long as you have at least one piece of fruit or a serving of vegetables, adding a second crunchy snack is fine. —Carrot or celery sticks —Apple slices with peanut butter —Fruit salad; banana, pear, peach or any other whole fruit —Grapes —Olives —Almonds and raisins (mixed 50-50) —Triscuits —Small bag of pretzel sticks or Goldfish pretzels —Baked! Lay’s Drinks: Considering the fact that many kids’ beverages have nearly as much sugar per ounce

as soft drinks, tossing the wrong drink in the lunchbox could translate into 3 to 5 extra pounds by the end of the school year. Drinks should be either zero- or low-calorie (water, diet drinks), high in nutrition (milk, 100 percent juice) or both (tea). Here are the best picks, in descending order. —Water —Lightly sweetened iced tea, like Honest Tea —Low-fat milk —100 percent juice drinks —Low-calorie kids’ drinks, like Minute Maid Fruit Falls and Tropicana Fruit Squeeze Master this nutritious lunch bag mix, and your kid will be the envy of every mystery meat-eating student in school! A few grain storage considerations by Lyndon Hicks, PAg Regional Crops Specialist, Yorkton Regional Services Branch Grains may be stored for a long period of time but maintaining quality is dependent on the condition the grain was in when harvested and the storage facility being used. Generally speaking, grains binned at lower temperatures and moisture contents can be stored for longer periods of time before they begin to deteriorate. The occurrence of insects, molds and fungi will drastically reduce grain quality and these are all affected by grain moisture and temperature. There are other favorites, like basketball, cycling, table tennis, kayaking and sailing, with the addition this year of golf and kite surfing. With so many events to learn about and follow, opportunities abound for introducing your kids and their friends to new sports for fun and fitness. Start training now, and keep it up! That’s what educator Nancy Troffey encourages her 3- and 4-year-olds to do in a preschool class at a summer family camp. A painted, recycled cardboard mattress box with Olympic symbols and “USA Training Center” spelled out in big letters daily inspires pint-size athletes when they hear stories, draw, play and exercise. Olympic hopefuls aren’t born, she tells the active kids. “Good athletes have healthy, strong

storage facilities and aeration systems are thoroughly cleaned before adding new grain. • Treating bins with diatomaceous earth or Malathion is recommended prior to adding new grain. This is not recommended for storing oilseeds or pulse crops. • Reduce or remove vegetation within 10 meters of a storage site to decrease the number of rodents and insects living adjacent to the stored grain. • Mixing newly harvested grains with old infested grain (i.e. high moisture content or insects) could potentially contaminate all new harvested crops. During filling: • Consider aeration to bring stored grain temperature down to 10°C. Below this temperature, reproduction and movement of most insects is reduced. bodies, and they work hard.” As they eagerly line up one by one for a practice routine wiggling through a nylon tube, balancing on a masking-tape balance beam taped to the floor and running around a playhouse to the finish line, she says, “Set your mind on the goal!” Set your mind on family goals with these ideas:

Wheat: spoilage occurs when initial temperature ranges from 0 degrees C to 28 degrees C with respective moisture from 18% to 10% moisture contact. • If planning to store grain for long periods of time, consider adding a grain protectant such as diatomaceous earth or Malathion (only on registered crops) when filling bins. After filling: • For grain stored above 10°C, inspect every in a blender the following morning with fruit juice for an on-the-spot smoothie. GET IN SHAPE TOGETHER Make it a new habit to walk, jog and bike in your neighborhood. When the weekend comes around, find an easy-to-follow nature trail and enjoy

two to three weeks for heating and insect activity. Use a grain probe to monitor the middle section of the stored grain, not just the edge. • Consider top dressing a grain protectant to control surface feeder infestations. • If insects become a problem, Phostoxin hiking through beautiful trees cloaked in ferns and other wild plants. Exercise and a dose of nature are a healthy combination. MARK YOUR PROGRESS Record your fitness activities on poster board. Across the top, list favorite family activities,

HOLLYWOOD — When Han Solo (Harrison Ford) died near the end of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” it was the end of Han Solo, right? Wrong! Disney will resurrect Hans Solo in an anthology series of prequels of him as a young man. That young man will be Alden Ehrenreich. Alden was discovered by “Godfather” producer Francis Ford Coppola for “Tetro” (2009), with Vincent Gallo. In 2011, Alden starred with Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning and Ben Chaplin in Coppola’s film “Twixt.” Both films were

However, two actors have been screen-tested for James Bond. Jamie Bell (star of “Billy Elliot,” in 2000), who, ironically, starred in the “King Kong” remake in 2005. He was last seen in “The Fantastic Four” in 2015. The second actor is Theo James of the 2013 CBS series “Golden Boy,” and “Divergent” and its sequels, “Insurgent” and “Allegiant.” He may not do the next sequel, “Ascendant,” because it’s being planned as a TV film. In the works are the crime comedy “The War on Everyone” (with Alexander Skarsgard), as well as “London Fields,” with Billy Bob Thornton and Amber Heard, and the sequel to “Underworld: A w a k e n i n g , ” “Underworld: Blood Wars,” with Kate Beckinsale. He’s currently filming “Backstabbing

for Beginners,” with Ben Kingsley and Jacqueline Bissett. James has two film franchises; will 007 make it three times the charm? For Benedict Cumberbatch, his personal life began at 40. On Valentine’s Day 2015, he married Sophie Hunter (after a 17-year friendship), and they had a

son, Christopher Carlton, the same year. He’ll hit the big screen in the superhero film “Doctor Strange” (out Nov. 4) and “Jungle Book Origins,” with Christian Bale, Matthew Rhys, Frieda Pinto and Cate Blanchett (Oct. 19). Webb accomplished the 21-mile crossing, which really entailed 39 miles of swimming because of tidal currents, in just under 22 hours. • On Aug. 27, 1883, the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurs on Krakatau, a small volcanic island in Indonesia. Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw 5 cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air, created 120-foot tsunamis and killed 36,000 people. • On Aug. 23, 1926, the death of silent-screen idol Rudolph Valentino at age 31 sends his fans into a hysterical state of mass mourning. With sharp knife, cut pineapple lengthwise through crown to stem end in 4 wedges, leaving on leafy crown. From lime, grate 1/2 teaspoon peel and squeeze 1 tablespoon juice. In small bowl, mix lime peel and juice with jerk seasoning and oil. Rub both sides of pork chops with jerk mixture. Place pork chops

on hot grill rack over medium heat; cook 10 to 12 minutes, turning chops over once, until browned on the outside and still slightly pink on the inside. While chops are cooking, add pineapple wedges, cut sides down, to same grill; cook 5 minutes, turning wedges over once. Transfer chops and pineapple to same platter. Garnish with lime wedges and cilantro sprigs. Makes 4 servings. • Each serving: About 400 calories, 22g total fat

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I live in a part of the country that rarely sees extreme weather events like tornadoes, hurricanes, floods or blizzards. So I never gave much thought to having a disaster-preparedness kit. However, a couple of

weeks ago my neighbor’s house caught fire and burned down. Thankfully no one was injured, and they did not own pets, but it got me thinking about how I would care for my cat and dog in an unforeseen disaster. I put together a small disaster kit that I keep in the trunk of my car, stowed out of the way. It has copies of my pets’ medical records, two extra leashes and collars with extra ID tags attached, a few singlemeal pouches of dog

and cat food, a gallon of water and a couple of old T-shirts for emergency bedding (which hopefully have a familiar scent to help them feel at home). If we have to leave very quickly — and in a fire there is no time to try and grab anything, except family — I have a little less to worry about afterward. — Sara in Washington DEAR SARA: That’s a great idea, and a very important point about priorities in a disaster — natural or otherwise,

Lime Filling •12 to 16 Key limes or 3 to 4 regular (Persian)

limes •1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk •5 large egg yolks •3 lime slices, each cut in half, for garnish Prepare crumb crust: In 9-inch glass pie plate, with fork, mix crumbs and butter until crumbs are evenly moistened. Press mixture firmly onto bottom and up side of pie plate. Preheat oven to 375 F. Prepare lime filling: From limes, grate 2 teaspoons peel and squeeze 1/2 cup juice. In medium bowl, with wire whisk or fork, mix condensed milk with lime peel and juice,

and egg yolks until combined. Pour filling into prepared crust; smooth top. Bake pie 15 to 20 minutes or just until filling is firm. Cool pie on wire rack 45 minutes, then cover and refrigerate 3 hours or until well-chilled. Garnish with lime slices. Makes about 10 servings. • Each serving: About 280 calories, 14g total fat (7g saturated), 6g protein, 36g carbohydrate, 1g fiber, 133mg cholesterol, 200mg sodium. like a house fire. Time is essential, so first, get to safety, and worry about paperwork much later. Preparing a pet-care kit is an important part of disaster planning.

Sit down with your family to discuss how you will handle events like house fires, evacuation orders or other emergencies. You also should put together a list of local

and federal agencies and organizations that can help you during and after a disaster. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

Top barbecue trends this summer (NC) — Make this grill season one to remember, with tasty techniques that will have your guests asking for more. Get inspired and have a delicious summer with these top trends from the 2016 Grilling Flavour Forecast by McCormick. Brazen burger rubs. Barbecue rubs shouldn’t be kept for just steaks and chicken. Introduce your burgers to fresh flavour with spiced rubs that create a caramelized, mouthwatering patty. Use your fingers to ensure the rub reaches each crevice, crack and pore of your meat. East meets grill. Take your backyard to new places. Swap your traditional spices for next-level Japanese, Malaysian, Thai and Korean flavours. If you’re up for some experimentation, try this adventurous equation: sweet + soy + spice = yum. Heat + tang + smoke. Fresh chilies paired with tangy vinegar and mustard make the ultimate trio. Keep your taste buds guessing bite for bite, with this grilled sandwich.

Enjoy summer with homemade sorbet Dessert and summer are a match made in heaven. Sweltering summer afternoons might not be comfortable, but any discomfort can be quickly washed away with a refreshing dessert, such as the following recipe for “Kiwi Fruit Sorbet” from Lou Seibert Pappas’ “Ice Creams & Sorbets” (Chronicle Books). Kiwi Fruit Sorbet Makes about 1 quart •2 teaspoons grated lime or lemon zest •3⁄4 cup sugar, divided •3⁄4 cup water •2 pounds kiwi fruit

(about 8 kiwi fruit), peeled and quartered •6 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice •2 limes, quartered

In a small bowl, mash the zest with 1 teaspoon of the sugar to release the oils. Combine the remaining sugar and water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Cook until the syrup is clear. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature. In a food processor or blender, purée the kiwi fruit with the juice, syrup and sugared zest. Transfer to a container, cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, about 3 hours. Freeze in an ice

cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Or, to freeze without an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a 9-inch nonreactive square pan. Cover with aluminum foil or plastic wrap and freeze just until solid, 2 to 3 hours. Scrape out into an electric mixer or food processor and process briefly until light and fluffy. Serve at once or transfer to a container, cover, and freeze until firm, about 2 hours. At serving time, garnish with a lime wedge to squeeze over each serving.

Recognize and prevent repetitive stress injuries Repetitive stress injuries, or RSIs, can impact muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. Though The Mayo Clinic estimates that three million people in the United States are affected by such injuries, some may not fully understand just how they reached a point where they are suffering from an RSI. RSIs are a condition that occurs when too much stress is placed on one part of the body, typically a joint, over and over again, resulting in inflammation and poten-

tial tissue damage. RSIs typically happen when a person repeats the same movements again and again. It comes as no surprise then that RSIs are commonly experienced by athletes and office workers. The elderly are most affected by RSIs, but these types of injuries are also known to occur in younger adults and children. These injuries tend to develop over time and tend go unnoticed in their early stages. Prevention is the best defense against RSIs.

Start by using proper equipment at all times to help keep the body protected and in neutral positions. Such equipment may include support devices for wrists or knees, and shoes that fit well and provide ample support. Athletes should make sure their gear is properly sized to their bodies. Using the wrong size tennis racket, for example, may contribute to elbow strain when serving and hitting. Proper nutrition also is key. Consuming the

right foods is essential to developing and maintaining strong muscles, which help support joints in the body. Speak with a doctor or nutritionist if you suspect your diet has room for improvement. RSIs can be troublesome for office workers. Maintaining neutral body positioning is the best defense against pain and injury, according to the pain prevention resource Tifaq.com. Tifaq.com suggests following these procedures in addition to stretching and exercising at the office:

• Keep your head level, forward facing and in line with your torso. • Feet should be flat on the floor or on a footrest. • Shoulders can be relaxed and arms hanging normally at your sides. Your elbows should be at about 90-degree angles. • Support your back with a lumbar support or a small pillow. • Sit vertically or lean back slightly while at your desk. • Keep frequently used items close by so you do not need to stretch.

• Position your monitor so it is directly in front of you and at eye level. • Take frequent breaks to stretch or take a walk around the office. Examples of RSIs include carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, tendonitis, and trigger finger. Always consult with a doctor if pain from routine activities is persistent. Individuals may benefit from working with a physical therapist to learn strategies to avoid RSI activities.

Natural ways to reduce Lyme disease risk The great outdoors can be a wonder to behold. Parks, nature preserves or even some time spent in the backyard can help men, women and children reconnect with nature. While there is plenty to enjoy about the great outdoors, certain hazards are lurking. Ticks can be both a nuisance and a danger, potentially contributing to illnesses like Lyme disease. Recognizing the dangers of ticks and how to avoid tick bites can help people reduce their risk for contracting Lyme disease. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that,

FARMERS’ MARKET SALAD There is nothing bet-

after hatching from eggs, ticks must eat blood at every stage to survive. It can take up to three years for a tick to complete its full life cycle, meaning it needs quite a few hosts to feed on. Ticks are part of the arachnid family, but unlike spiders, ticks attach to the skin of an animal and suck its blood. Ticks can be found just about anywhere, but they tend to gravitate toward wooded areas or tall grasses, which offer them protection and good vantage points to find an animal host. Dog owners have no doubt encountered ticks in their lifetimes, as ticks

are routine problems for dogs that are not properly protected. But ticks also prey on humans. Ticks are and their bites are relatively painless, which can make it difficult for people to detect when they have been bitten. Many tick bites are harmless and do not require treatment. However, if bitten by a tick that is carrying Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, people may need to take an antibiotic to prevent any lasting health effects. As a result, people should always visit a doctor when bitten by a tick. Pesticide repellants are some of the more

effective and well-known methods to prevent tick bites and subsequent side effects. Many repellants can be used without negative side effects, but those who prefer to go a more natural route can take the following precautionary measures. • Watch habitats. Steer clear of grassy, wooded and brushy areas. Ticks also prefer humid conditions. • Stick to trails. Stay on trails when hiking or walking to avoid brushing up against areas where ticks may be hiding out. • Wear proper clothing. Light-colored clothing

makes it easier to spot ticks that may have made their way onto a person. Tuck pants into socks, as ticks tend to climb onto hosts from the ground up. Bare ankles provide easy access. • Protect hair and heads. Wear a hat and/or keep long hair contained so that it isn’t an attractive hiding spot for ticks. • Shower immediately. After coming in from areas known for ticks, shower and launder clothing immediately. While showering, do a spot inspection looking for ticks on your body. Remember to look in hidden areas like under the arms, in and around the

ears, inside the belly button, on the back of the knees, in and around the hair, between the legs, and around the waist. • Clean up the yard. Make your yard less habitable to ticks by mowing the grass regularly and removing leaf litter and trim shrubs. Also, use wood chips or gravel to serve as a barrier between lawns and wooded areas of the property. • Use natural oils. Ticks may not like the smell of garlic, lemon, eucalyptus, lavender, and rosemary, among others. Dotting your body with these infused oils may make you less attractive to ticks.

sport has fiddled with its secret sauce as often as baseball.

If we needed any further evidence that baseball is, once again, metamorphosing into a different era, this season’s trade deadline was all the proof needed. While all major sports do the same — basketball recently saw the addition of the three-point line, football killed the kickoff return, tennis now allows limited coaching, boxing switched to 12-round fights and hockey added the shootout — no other

What exactly constitutes an “era,” you may be asking? Well, in Boston, that’s how they pronounce the word “error,” as in “Nomah shouldn’t be chahged with an era on that play!” Those in the English-speaking parts of the country generally see an “era” as beginning with a readily identifiable change in culture. Baseball, probably due to its fan base’s love of statistical scrutiny, seems to revel in this sort of unofficial, much-written-about classification system. Let’s see ... there was

the deadball era, the spitball era, the Babe Ruth era, the integration era, the World War II era, the expansion era, the year of the higher mound (not an era, but a noticeable blip on the timeline), the free-agent era, the designated-hitter era, the cocaine era, the steroid era, the “Moneyball” era and now this era. What do we call this era? The 100-plus mph bullpen era? The infield shift era? The Chachi Arcola Republican Convention Speech era? The search for stars? While the league has its share of superstars, if Bryce Harper, Giancarlo Stanton or Clayton Kershaw walked past

you at the Kwik-E Mart, 95 percent of the population would not recognize them, I’d wager (but not on the game if I was a manager).

signing Catfish Hunter. At this year’s trade deadline, Hal Steinbrenner’s fire sale of five veterans, the surefire impending release of A-Rod and lack of extension talk for Mark Texeira in order to shore up an anemic farm, signaled another change: the big-trade era, perhaps?

One thing is clear, however: We are moving

out of the boring “onbase percentage is the best statistic there is” phase. Unless it’s Rickey Henderson, nobody spends hundreds of dollars to go see a baseball game and root, root, root for the home team to walk. Thankfully, Ned Yost and the Royals freed us from that oppression. They did this by developing a strong farm system that taught fundamentals stressing movement ... great defense, speed and hits, backed by a lightsout bullpen. Now that’s baseball worth paying to see. It’s been a little over 40 years since George Steinbrenner ushered in the free-agent era by

“The Adventures of Esplandian,” Spanish author Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo wrote of an island peopled entirely by Amazon-like women, and he called it California. When Spaniard Francisco de Ulloa was exploring the west coast of North America, his initial surveys of the Baja Peninsula led him to believe the land was an island, so the region was given the name of the mythical

place: California. • In Mongolia, it’s common to put salt in one’s tea before drinking it. • If you’re a fan of nature documentaries, you’ve doubtless seen footage of Africa’s Serengeti, site of the world’s largest terrestrial mammal migration. If you’ve see images of the place, you won’t be surprised to learn that in Maasai, the word “Serengeti” means “the place where the land

runs on forever.” • You’ve probably heard of John Steinbeck’s celebrated novel “Of Mice and Men,” but you probably didn’t know that it was almost titled “Something That Happened.” Thought for the Day: “Do you wish the world were happy? / Then remember day by day, / Just to scatter seeds of kindness / As you pass along the way.” — Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Baseball is in great financial shape, or so we are constantly being told. Still, the game has some major-league flaws. The fact that an entire state can’t watch a Yankee game due to a fight with a cable company is abhorrent. The fact that a single exhibition game that managers don’t play to win can control homefield advantage for the seven-game championship series is moronic.

I’m personally in favor of austerity because no matter what, a few things will never change for baseball: Good pitching beats good hitting, you can’t catch a ball hit out of the park and the team with the most runs wins. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

Probiotics can be part of diet Probiotics can help people combat gastrointestinal distress. Some probiotics can help prevent diarrhea that occurs as a side effect from antibiotics, and they may also be beneficial to those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome and conditions that affect the gastrointestinal tract. Probiotics are living microorganisms found in certain foods, most notably yogurt and kefir. They also may be found in products that are not taken orally, such as skin creams. Probiotics may be concentrated in dietary supplements well. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, probiotics are healthy bacteria that help bodies to function properly by aiding in the digestion of food. Probiotics also destroy disease causing microorganisms. Researchers have studied probiotics to determine their potential role in people’s personal health. Preliminary data suggests that probiotics can be useful in helping with stomach upset from infections and taking antibiotics. Probiotics are also being examined to determine if they can be used to combat allergic disorders, such as hay fever or eczema. Probiotics also may be useful in the fight against oral health problems that stem from bacteria, like periodontal disease. Researchers also are looking into whether probiotics can be useful in treating the common cold or reducing the severity of the flu. The Mayo Clinic says side effects to probiotics are rare, and many healthy adults can safely add probiotic-heavy foods or probiotic supplements to their diets. But before including probiotics in your diet, speak with your doctor to make sure there will be no drug interactions or other adverse side effects. More research is needed into the health benefits of probiotics, but there’s encouraging evidence that these live microorganisms can do much to improve personal health.

Enjoy mosquito-free patio parties Outdoor gatherings are a summertime staple for many families and groups of friends for whom summer simply would not be complete without backyard barbecues or lazy evenings on the patio. While outdoor party hosts often invite as many friends and family members as possible to such gatherings, they also can count on some uninvited and particularly bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes love to bite humans. The side effects of such bites can range from the relatively harmless (annoying, itchy bites) to the severe (disease). Hosts who want to keep

mosquitoes at bay during their next patio party can try the following tips. Uä ``Ă€iĂƒĂƒä >Ă€i>Ăƒä Ă›ÂˆĂ‹Â…ä ĂƒĂ‹>˜`ˆ˜}ä Ă›>Ă‹iĂ€° Standing water is attractive to mosquitoes because it gives them a place to breed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, studies have shown that female mosquitoes prefer to lay eggs in water that collects or is stored in manmade containers. The CDC recommends that items that can collect water, including pet bowls, vases, birdbaths and pool covers, be emptied and scrubbed at least once per week. When items like pet

bowls are not in use, turn them over to empty them and then keep them covered until they must be used again. Tightly seal any water storage containers to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside and laying eggs. Uä-ÂˆÂ“Ă”Â?>Ă‹iäĂ›ÂˆÂ˜`° Few people may think to bring window or desk fans outside when entertaining, but simulating wind can deter mosquitoes from invading patios and decks. Mosquitoes fly slowly and often cannot make it through the simulated wind created by manmade fans. In addition, fans may blow away the very things, such as body odor, that draw mosquitoes to humans in

the first place. Uä ˆ}Â…Ă‹ä VÂˆĂ‹Ă€ÂœÂ˜iÂ?Â?>ä V>˜`Â?iĂƒä >˜`Ă‰ÂœĂ€ä Ă‹ÂœĂ€VÂ…iĂƒ°ä Citronella candles and tiki torches that burn citronella are effective mosquito deterrent as well. Such candles and torches give off smoke that confuses mosquitoes and masks the human scents that attract the bugs. Place torches around your patio but find somewhere other than the dining table to place citronella candles if you decide to use them, as some people find the candles aggravating or bothersome. Uä *Â?>Â˜Ă‹ä Â“ÂœĂƒÂľĂ”ÂˆĂ‹ÂœÂ‡Ă€iÂŤiÂ?Â?iÂ˜Ă‹ä ÂŤÂ?>Â˜Ă‹Ăƒ° The right plants might

help you keep mosquitoes at bay as well. For example, catmint contains an oil called nepeta faassenii that can be used as an all-natural mosquito repellent. Closely related to catmint, catnip also can be an effective mosquito deterrent. But both species can be invasive, so be sure to contact a local lawn and garden professional before planting any plants to repel mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are a potentially harmful nuisance that can quickly compromise outdoor gatherings. But party hosts can take several steps to keep these uninvited guests from spoiling summertime soirees.

Prevent bed bugs at home after travelling “Sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs biteâ€? may have been a clever thing to say when tucking children in at night, but bed bugs are more than just child’s play. Bed bugs have long been a threat to humans and other animals. Even though bed bugs are commonly associated with areas void of cleanliness, just about any person can end up with a bed bug infestation. That’s because bed bugs are very good at hitchhiking. They can nestle into small crevices, such as in the cracks of suitcases, clothing and linens. Then those same bed bugs can take up residence in another home, dormitory or office. The National Pest Management Association says bed bug encounters have become more common in public places in recent years. Travelers need to protect themselves by learning how bed bugs operate and how to prevent them from becoming a problem. The following are some fast facts about bed bugs. Uä i`ä LĂ”}Ăƒä >Ă€iä vÂœĂ”Â˜`ä living with humans worldwide. Uä i`ä LĂ”}Ăƒä vii`ä œ˜ä human blood to survive and reproduce, feeding roughly every three to seven days. anywhere she wanders. It takes eggs only six to 10 days to hatch, according to the National Pesticide Information Center. Uä i`äLĂ”}ĂƒäV>˜äĂƒĂ”Ă€ĂšÂˆĂšiä cold temperatures and go months without feeding. Drying out kills bed bugs in isolated areas more so than not feeding. With this knowledge in mind, people can prevent

bed bugs from becoming a problem. The NPMA recommends the following bed bug prevention tips, particularly during and after staying in a public place. Uä*Ă”Â?Â?äL>VÂŽäĂƒÂ…iiĂ‹Ăƒä>˜`ä inspect mattress seams for telltale bed bug stains. Inspect the entire room, including sofas and chairs and behind
