Remembrance Day 11 NOVEMBER
“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.” -Laurence Binyon, “Ode of Remembrance”

Sharing a lasting legacy November 2016 – People often can’t help but smile when they see six-year-old Kamryn Bond lay a wreath with her friend, Shannon Krasowski, 40, at their local Remembrance Day ceremony. Although an unlikely pair, they are both amputees and are part of a legacy that goes back nearly 100 years. Kamryn is a member, and Shannon a graduate, of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program. It was war amputee veterans who created The War Amps in 1918, its Key Tag Service in 1946, and later, the CHAMP Program. Since 1975, thousands of child amputees across Canada have received financial assistance for their artificial limbs through CHAMP and attended regional seminars where they learn about growing up as an amputee. When Kamryn was 11 months old, both of her legs, right hand, and several fingers on her left hand, were amputated due to a respiratory illness. Shannon’s left leg was amputated when she was 13 years old due to

They met three years ago at their local Remembrance Day ceremony. That year, Kamryn watched Shannon lay a wreath on behalf of The War Amps Operation Legacy, but ever since, it has been a tradition they share. While growing up as a Champ, Shannon met many war amputee veterans and heard their firsthand accounts of the devastation of war. “They passed this legacy to us younger amputees and now it’s our turn to share their stories, so that we never forget their sacrifices,” she says.
Although Kamryn is still quite young, her mom, Dale, says it is important for her daughter to lay a wreath on Remembrance Day. “It builds the foundation for her to understand how much our war veterans gave up for our freedom.” Dale adds, “We will always be appreciative of the work of the war amputee veterans and the message they have left for young amputees like Kamryn to carry into the future. It is for this reason that she lays a wreath every year in their honour, and will do so for many years to come.”

Take Time To Remember
With the announced sale of the Legion Hall in Yorkton an era is coming to an end, and a new chapter begins for the General Alexander branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Through the years a wide range of activities have been held at the hall, and many memories have been created. Yorkton This Week asked members of Yorkton Council to share some of their memories or events held at the Legion Hall, and they appear here;
Golf event
Back several year ago The Yorkton News sponsored a golf tournament. I’m not sure what the year was but, for our very first tournament we held our banquet at the Legion Hall. The meal was fabulous and the service was second to none. Everyone there had a great time. I have also been to several Lions District Governors nights that were held there when I was a member of the Sunrise Lions. As usual everything went off without a hitch. It is really too bad that a place like this has to close it’s doors. Councillor Ken Chyz
Santa, weddings and more
The Legion Hall has been the site of some wonderful memories, especially during recent 265 BRADBROOKE DRIVE years. In 2009 it was (Across from the hospital) my pleasure to serve 306-783-4331 as master of ceremonies for the wedding of Hearns_1x28_R0011308256.indd my brother-in-law and • prod2/kj• sister-in-law, Don and • ytw remembrance 2016 Brenna Baluk. The Hall was the location of the reception, and I had a great time celebrating with my entire family, as the festivities continued well into the night. The natural choice The Hall has also for health been the location of Parkland Mall, a few hockey drafts Yorkton, SK that some of my closest friends and I have 306-783-4270 participated in. Most of the participants arrived Sangsters_1x28_R0011308260.indd decked outprod2/ in the jerkj YTW remembrance 2016sey of their favourite We are proud to salute our veterans on team. For years, I had to endure the taunts from Remembrance Day many of the others gathered for the fun, as my LA Kings had a playoff history that didn’t inspire much envy. But, in 2013 and again in 2015, I was able to enter HARVEST MEATS the Legion Hall wearYorkton, Sask. ing the jersey of the www.harvestmeats.ca reigning Stanley Cup Champions. (The Kings
Time To Remember
won in 2012 and again in 2014.) For some reason, some delusional Leafs fans thought that they should still make fun of me… In all honesty, the Legion Hall itself is simply a building. What really makes it special are the people who have been so involved with what it stands for over the years. Here in Yorkton we are so blessed to never have had to endure the horror of war on our own soil. But, many members of the Legion Hall have defended our freedom and our country. To make their sacrifices a little more real for our students, we hold Remembrance Day services in each of our schools leading up to November 11th. Every single time we have asked, the Legion Hall staff has organized a Colour Party consisting of veterans, as well as current officers. They have made sure to coordinate all of the plans for them to join us. We can’t take all of Yorkton’s students to the Legion Hall, but its
Concerts come to mind
I have many memories of the Legion Hall. However a few of the great ones that really stand out are concerts in early 2000’s and the Parkland Mall Christmas parties! In case you are unaware Yorkton had a very thriving punk rock scene and the Legion played host to a number of “shows”!! It was always difficult for guys to find places for these types of rock concerts but the Legion was accommodating many times. My favourite single memory was during a comedy act while at a Mall Christmas party, a “big” dude (local legend) in the crowd
TV tapings
was doing a great job heckling the comedian and at one point the comedian asked what kind of car the man drove and the crowd erupted as the vehicle he drove wasn’t much bigger than the man! Besides these of course there was senior hockey parties, my wife’s ten year high school reunion and a wine tasting where the first idea came up about us purchasing Let’s Make Wine!! Thanks for the memories and your service to the community! - Councillor Aaron Kienle
My favourite Legion memory involves a CTV program we taped at the hall. We gathered the usual suspects. John Miller, Al Morley, Joe Yurkowski and others to tape a Remembrance Day special. I had interviewed each of them several times and expected the same stories, but was surprised how much more comfortable they were ensconced in the basement of their second home. They were engaging as always, but you could tell almost instantly that despite the TV lights they were on their turf and this was their story. A moment never forgotten from the Yorkton Legion Hall. members have ensured that the spirit and significance of what the Hall stands for is shared with each of our school families. As I asked my wife to read the first three paragraphs of my submission, she reminded me of a few Christmas Parties that were held in the Legion Hall. Early in our marriage, we would attend these gatherings as her grandfather Joe Yurkoski was a longtime member of the Legion and had earned the title of Regimental Sergeant Major. (I even remember him leading the Colour Party in my school’s Remembrance Day Services before I met his granddaughter!) Strangely enough, Papa Joe never seemed to be able to attend those Christmas Parties, as his calendar was always full on those days. However, Santa had a voice that would have caused most people to stand up straight and salute. Hmm… I wonder if Santa ever led a Colour Party. - Councillor Quinn Haider

Simple appreciation
Meeting future wife
My most memorable night at the Legion was a special one. Many moons ago I was working a function at the Legion - bartending actually. There was this young lady there was that showing me some interest - I cut my shift short about 10-15 minutes early and got to two-step with her for three songs I believe. I guess that pushed me over the top (huge bonus points because I could two-step) - this evening led to a few more dates and eventually I was fortunate enough that the young lady became my wife some years down the road. So, I do have a very special memory from this fine storied building. Councillor Darcy Zaharia
Photography opportunity
My sincere appreciation to the members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #77 for the ongoing education for the City of Yorkton residents and children. We are fortunate that every year the Legion works with businesses and organizations, to include Remembrance Day wreaths in our facilities. We are able to have visitors travelling and stopping at the Tourism Yorkton visitor centre with information about a Remembrance Day service. So even if people are away from their home communities they have an opportunity to attend a service and pay their respect to the veterans. I also appreciate the work of the Legion in visiting schools to bring awareness to the role and impact veterans have in our country and society. And the sacrifices of those who took part in the world wars and the role they played in shaping our national identity. The Remembrance Day commemorations are a way for our community to honour those who contributed to the Canada we know. Councillor Father and Son from North Carolina stopped in at the Tourism Yorkton Visitor Randy Goulden Centre.
As a working full time professional photographer, I have had the distinguished privilege of photographing 1000+ weddings in my life. Although all weddings are special and have their personal & exciting/emotional moments, some still stand out in my memory for various reasons forever. One of which happened which encompasses the Yorkton Legion on Broadway. For the first and only time in my entire career I covered a particular wedding beginning with the ceremony, studio and of course, the reception being held at the Legion Hall. The hall was full of the invited guests, the food prepared as the workers stood waiting to serve the delicious meals
that were always home cooking at its finest. We finished up with the formals at the studio with all the group portraits and special time with the kind & appreciative bride & groom and we all headed out the door together to the hall. The wedding cavalcade of cars arrived pretty much at the same time (or so it seemed) with me arriving first to prepare for their arrival announcement to the seated guests. Oddly enough, parents, family, bridal party all entered the front lobby to prepare for the announcement, but our bride and groom were missing? No one knew anything as to their where a bouts, so we waited… and waited … and waited, until they decided to go and take their seats to keep the even-
ing moving forward. Finally, it was announced that the bride and groom had arrived! Might I add that there was much speculation as to where they may have gone ( many people smiling and raising their eyebrows). However, when they were announced by the MC only the groom walked in… alone… smiled, and sat down. Nothing was said after the groom whispered in the ear of the MC. We ate and speeches ensued complete with toasts and well wishes as the groom sat alone with an empty chair beside him. Although the groom did what all grooms do, complete with speeches, toasts, and acknowledgements, he maintained is strong dignity and happiness. I stood and questioned if this was really happening! LEST WE FORGET ParklandCollege_6x28_R0011327246.indd prod2/kj PLEASE WEAR A POPPY YTW remembrance f/c by2016 Don Crawford “Please wear a poppy,” the lady said And held one forth, but I shook my head. Then I stopped and watched as she offered them there, And her face was old and lined with care; But beneath the scars the years had made There remained a smile that refused to fade. A boy came whistling down the street, Bouncing along on care-free feet. His smile was full of joy and fun, “Lady,” said he, “may I have one?” When she’d pinned it on he turned to say, “Why do we wear a poppy today?” The lady smiled in her wistful way And answered, “This is Remembrance Day, And the poppy there is the symbol for The gallant men who died in war. And because they did, you and I are free Poem by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. THE FINAL INSPECTION The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass.
The soldier squared his shoulders and said, “No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry guns, Can’t always be a saint.
The Boys They fell by the thousands, ‘til the rivers ran red, With the blood of the wounded, the blood of the dead. No matter what colour or hue of their skin, The blood’s the same colour, outside or within. They were boys that left home, patriotics held high. T’was their shield and their talisman and for it they’d die. No matter what side the soldiers fought for, They killed, eye-for-eye, ‘til they couldn’t keep score. The boys fought for apple pie, King and country. The boys fought for the right to always live free: But boys shouldn’t die, they should live to be menFrom our lips to God’s ears, to world peace, please. Amen © Margot Leolyn Hedden November 11th 2011
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I’ve been violent, Because the world is awfully rough.
“Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you ? Have you always turned the other cheek ? To My Church have you been true?”
I’ve had to work most Sundays,
That’s why we wear a poppy, you see.” “I had a boy about your size, With golden hair and big blue eyes. He loved to play and jump and shout, Free as a bird he would race about. As the years went by he learned and grew and became a man - as you will, too.” “He was fine and strong, with a boyish smile, But he’d seemed with us such a little while When war broke out and he went away. I still remember his face that day When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye, I’ll be back soon, Mom, so please don’t cry.” “But the war went on and he had to stay, And all I could do was wait and pray. His letters told of the awful fight, (I can see it still in my dreams at night), With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire, And the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire.” “Till at last, at last, the war was won -
But, I never took a penny, That wasn’t mine to keep... Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I’ve wept unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place, Among the people here. They never wanted me around,
And that’s why we wear a poppy son.” The small boy turned as if to go, Then said, “Thanks, lady, I’m glad to know. That sure did sound like an awful fight, But your son - did he come back all right?” A tear rolled down each faded check; She shook her head, but didn’t speak. I slunk away in a sort of shame, And if you were me you’d have done the same; For our thanks, in giving, if oft delayed, Thought our freedom was bought - and thousands paid! And so when we see a poppy worn, Let us reflect on the burden borne, By those who gave their very all When asked to answer their country’s call That we at home in peace might live. Then wear a poppy! Remember - and give!
They sleep beyond England’s foam. But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night; As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain.
Except to calm their fears. If you’ve a place for me here, Lord, It needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don’t, I’ll understand. There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. “Step forward now, you soldier, You’ve borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets, You’ve done your time in Hell.” ~Author Unknown~
Quick facts on Remembrance Day 1. Remembrance Day was first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth. It was originally called “Armistice Day” to commemorate armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m. — on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. 2. From 1921 to 1930, Armistice Day was held on the Monday of the week in which November 11 fell. In 1931, Alan Neill, Member of Parliament for Comox–Alberni, introduced a bill to observe Armistice Day only on November 11. Passed by the House of Commons, the bill also changed the name to “Remembrance Day”. The first Remembrance Day was observed on November 11, 1931. 3. Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace. We remember the
more than 2,300,000 Canadians who have served throughout our nation’s history and the more than 118,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice. 4. The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day. Replica poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion to provide assistance to Veterans. 5. Remembrance Day is a federal statutory holiday in Canada. It is also a statutory holiday in three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut) and in six provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador). 6. The national ceremony is held at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The Governor General of Canada presides over the ceremony. It is also attended by the Prime Minister, other government officials, representatives of Veterans’ organizations, diplomatic representatives, other dignitaries, Veterans as well as the general public. 7. In advance of the ceremony, long
