Cold weather and snow doesn’t stop Yorkton! It might be colder through the fall and winter but Yorkton remains an active community and a centre for tourists to visit. “In Saskatchewan we don’t let something like snow and a bit of cold stop us from being active,” said Randy Goulden, manager of Tourism Yorkton. “Certainly in Yorkton there are always are things going on.” That is especially true leading up to the December holiday season. “With Yorkton being the hub of a large trading area, we have lots of people coming here to do their Christmas shopping,” she said. And there are some great events surrounding the season too. “It can be as simple as enjoying a drive around the city to enjoy the home decorations, to taking advantage of shopping opportunities to watching the Santa Claus Parade.” The annual parade will be held this year on Saturday, Nov. 24. And this year there will be an extra special event for the
season, said Goulden, “The famous CN Christmas train will be making a stop in the city, so that will add a lot of excitement to the season,” she said. The Christmas season even gets extended in Yorkton and region, said Goulden, who reminded many in the area mark the season by the Julian Calendar, Jan. 7. The winter season is also an active time for sports. Goulden said there are always hockey games for visitors to enjoy, the Junior Terriers, AAA Midget Maulers and a couple of dozen minor league teams. “And we can’t forget curling and figure skating either,” she said, adding “cross country skiing is also very popular.” The city is also part of a wide-ranging snowmobile trail system which brings many to the season. “Once the new year arrives there always seems to be something going on. We have the Stars for Saskatchewan concert series, trade shows and art shows,” said Goulden. “Winter is just another season of activities and fun in our city.”

Cross Country Skiing
Yorkton is home to some fine cross country skiing. The Yorkton Cross Country Ski Club sets approximately 10 kms of trails at Deer Park. “The trails are set in both classic and skate style grooming,” said club spokesperson Anne Stupak. “We have volunteers that groom our trails on a regular basis or as needed. The trails vary from fairly level to rolling hills and wind along the tree line and spruce groves.” When events are held amenities are close at hand too. “We have access to the club house to host events and house our ski equipment,” said Stupak. And newcomers to the activity can get a little help as well. “The club does have sets of skies that we loan out to members and we will rent to non- members,” said Stupak. The trails are open and free for all to ski but membership is encouraged to help maintain the equipment and trails. The club meets on a weekly basis for night skiing, but other than special events most ski whenever they wish to. Stupak said some added events are being planned for the upcoming season. “The Yorkton Cross Country Ski club has plans to host learn-to-ski days for both skate and classic style and waxing clinics,” she said. “Special family events like our annual skiing safari and ski for the gold poker derby are popular and new this year; we plan to host the Sundog Challenge to attract skiers that want to take on more distance in a marathon event.”
The club hopes to have the club house open on Sundays from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. by volunteers, so that skiers can stop in to warm up and have a coffee or hot chocolate. The club has close to 100 members, many of which are families, and with the ski trails at Deer Park, it is just a short trip to get out and ski. Cross Country skiing is a lifelong sport that anyone of any age group can enjoy. For more information or membership, call Anne Stupak at 306-783-6617 or email yorktoncrosscountryski@gmail.com

Walking Opportunities There might be a blanket of snow on the ground, but that can enhance the experience of exploring the city via a walking tour. The city is connected to the country’s longest recreational trail – The Trans Canada Trail. A newly erected pavilion serves as a lasting landmark at Logan Green Park to mark the accomplishment and visitors are welcome to stop by to view the names of local area donors who helped make the trail possible. An 18,000-kilometre recreational corridor winding its way through every province and territory – the Trans Canada Trail links over 800 communities along its route. Walking is “…a really great way to see the area, to enjoy what we have to offer and to get some physical activity at the same time,” points out Randy Goulden, manager of Tourism Yorkton. But there are also options which focus on the rich culture of the city, including a walking tour of the city’s downtown area to view some of the historic sites, and another which highlights outdoor art. Visit www.tourismyorkton.com or stop by the Tourism office for additional walking trail opportunities.

Stars for Saskatchewan
Each year the Yorkton Arts Council sponsors an array of exciting performances and this fall/winter season is no different. While in Yorkton treat yourself to first class entertainment by taking in one or all of the following performances; LEISA WAY - OH CANADA, Tuesday, October 3, 2017, 7:30 p.m. — Internationally acclaimed Canadian Songbird Leisa Way has created magic with this concert that thrills audiences of all ages. “Oh, Canada” takes you on an exciting musical journey across this spectacular country with a cavalcade of hits from our greatest stars. Singalong to Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Celine Dion, Michael Buble, Shania Twain, Stompin’ Tom Connors, Buffy Ste. Marie, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, The Guess Who, Ian & Sylvia, Don Messer, Bryan Adams, BTO and more. The superb musicianship, and incredible storytelling make us all proud to be Canadian! With over 80 performances booked from coast to coast in 2017, there is no finer way to celebrate our nation’s 150th birthday. “Oh, Canada, We Sing For Thee”! www.waytogoproductions.ca/ ohcanadashow.php LAILA BIALI, Friday, October 27, 2017, 7:30 p.m. — Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and pianist Laila Biali melds “traditional jazz with contemporary pop so effortlessly that neither style seems out of place on the same record” (Spinner Magazine). Sought after for tours with GRAMMY winning artists Chris Botti, Paula Cole, Suzanne Vega and Sting, Laila has also headlined festivals and venues spanning five continents including Carnegie Hall. This year, Laila was the featured performer at the first-ever global TEDSummit. Her studio recording, Tracing Light, received a JUNO nomination for “Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year”, and her follow-up, Live in Concert, was named one of the “Best Albums of 2013” by DownBeat Magazine. Laila is currently set to release a new album of original songs alongside covers of David Bowie, Coldplay and more. www. http://lailabiali.com/ UNION DUKE, Thursday, November 16, 2017, 7:30 p.m. (Presented through SPARK) — Sweat flies and floorboards tremble - Union Duke is a Toronto folk quintet with an explosive live show. Bridging soulful indie rock with bluegrass and country, the group belts out soaring harmonies with three, four and even five voices. The songs are irresistible, the perfect fit for the heatwave of the dance hall or the cool breeze of the park. These five guys have been making a commotion in one way or another since they were kids, and years of making music together have brought them to this: a heartbreak of twang and a bootshake of rock and roll. Union Duke is two fifths city, two fifths country, and one fifth whiskey. http://unionduke.com/ ROSIE & THE RIVETERS, Saturday, January 20, 2018, 7:30 p.m. — Rosie & the Riveters are fiercely talented and sassy dames from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, who perform uplifting folk music with a 1940s flair! Ask these spirited femmes to spin a slinky melody, roll out glinting harmonies, or hammer down a swinging beat, and you can bet the answer is going to be: “We can do it!”. Their original songs feature sophisticated harmonies, body percussion, scintillating dance moves, humour, and just enough oohlala to keep your toes tapping long after the show is over. It’s no wonder they are called “one of the best live [acts] you’ll ever see” by CBC Radio 2 host, Rich Terfry. http://www. rosieandtheriveters.com/ 100 MILE HOUSE, Thursday, February 08, 2018, 7:30 p.m. — Quality musicianship, finely crafted songs, and
heart-warming stories. These are the qualities you will experience at a 100 Mile House performance with the ability to light up but also silence almost any room they play. Their live performance led to winning the Emerging Artist Award at the 2014 Edmonton Folk Music Festival and their albums receiving 2 Western Canadian Music Award nominations, 2 Calgary Folk Festival Songwriting Grand Prizes, and 3 Edmonton Music Awards. When performing they aim to create a connection with the audience past just performing songs to a room. They prefer to create a conversation with their crowd and connect with them in a way that leaves them feeling they have experienced a truly unique performance. http://www.100milehouse.co.uk/ PRAIRIE DEBUT: HENDERSON KOLK DUO, Saturday, March 3, 2018, 7:30 p.m. — Since forming in 2004, the Henderson-Kolk Duo has established itself as one of North America’s premier classical guitar duos. Drew Henderson and Michael Kolk met at the University of Toronto and after their first performance together, quickly cultivated a musical chemistry that has resulted in a dynamic and exciting performance style. Their program will feature an exciting array of music with an emphasis on the duo’s original arrangements. Of interest are the transcriptions that take familiar works into the new sonorities of the two guitar medium, creating a fresh and intricate sound delivered by the sensitive playing of the Henderson-Kolk Duo. They will also feature works specifically written for two guitars, such as the beautiful pieces by Canadian Patrick Roux. This is definitely a concert not to be missed. https://www.hkguitarduo.com/ Continued on Page 9

Together, they have an intrinsic musical union which makes their artistry unique and interesting. The Chooi Brothers have performed with orchestras, on world stages, and have each won international music competitions. Nikki was recently appointed one of the world’s most prestigious violin posts, Concertmaster of The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. At age 16, Timothy captured the 2010 Grand Prize of the l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal Standard Life Competition. He won Bronze at the 2015 Michael Hill International Competition in New Zealand. The Chooi Brother’s concerts invoke a new twist to the typical classical violins and piano presentation. Along with pianist Philip Chiu, their program sees different configurations: two violins, one violin with piano, and two violins with piano. With music by Grieg, Prokofiev, Ravel, Saraste, and Canadian composer Arcuri, their program ranges from jazzy influenced classical, political commentary, to classical showpieces. http://www.prairiedebut.com/2017-2018 DERINA HARVEY, Thursday, April 19, 2018, 7:30 p.m. — The Derina Harvey Band is an Edmonton-based Celtic rock ensemble whose mission is to entertain via a show that is engaging, energetic, and fun. September – October 2017 – Monica Fraske- Bornyk – Nesting Instinct Nature has been a source of inspiration for my artwork and my spirit for many years, and much of my work has focused on wetlands, decomposing trees, and tiny plant images, searching for the sacred in the ordinary. The lines of pen and ink bring a quality to the work which I find meditative. When I was asked to do this exhibit, I looked through my work and noticed a thread of bird subject matter that has been there for more than 20 years. As I went through the drawings more closely, I found that many of the pieces reflected the stages of life (as a parent) that I was experiencing at the time, whether that be caring for small children, gathering food for them, or watching them take steps of independence. My most recent works feature nests – empty nests – the young having boldly left them behind to take their first independent steps in this world, hopping around, oblivious to the dangers that may be present, as their parents, fraught with anxiety, watch over them and continue to feed them when needed. This exhibit celebrates our feathered friends, but it is also a metaphor for some of the ordinary stages of raising young. October 18 – Story Slam Yorkton Story Slam is a program presented through the partnership of the Parkland Writers Alliance, the Yorkton Public Library and the Yorkton Arts Council. This event is a story telling competition held on October 18, 2017 in the Yorkton Public Library. Similar competitions are held in larger cities (Edmonton and Toronto). This is Yorkton’s chance to join in the fun! November – Prudence Achtymichuk – Photography December 1, 2017- January 23, 2018 – Otherworld – OSAC – This exhibition is curated by Zoe Schneider and organized and toured through the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils.
Otherworld combines surreal imagery rendered in photography, textile and paint. Preoccupied with the strange and unusual, these artists take us on an eerie journey. Unnerving thoughts, feelings and plots are explored with delicacy and humour. January 27 – February 25, 2018 – Upcycle Books – January 27 creation day Do you have some old books and creative energy? Bring them down to the Yorkton Public Library on Saturday January 27, 2018 at 1:00 pm. And join us for our 2nd Annual Upcycle Books Project. We are going to tear into those books and create something new! (Shhh … don’t tell the librarians) All ideas, scissors and glue guns welcome! March 1 – April 28 – Val Morhart – Landscape painting – Old buildings May – Angelina Kardynal
Paperbag Players The Paper Bag Players is a highly energetic community theatre group giving freely of their time and talent, to share their passion for live theatre with Yorkton and the surrounding communities. The Paper Bag Players annual Christmas Dinner Theatre will take place December 7, 8, & 9 at St. Gerard’s Auditorium. Cocktails start at 6:00 p.m., dinner at 7:00 p.m. with the show starting at 8:00 p.m. This year’s play is a comedy called ‘Dilemmas with Dinner’ … When junior executive Brooke invites her boss and his wife over for dinner in the hopes of securing a promotion. While frantically getting ready, Brooke and her husband discover that the hired help is coincidentally the boss’ ex-daughter-in-law. Just when it seems everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, Brooke’s boss has an unfortunate announcement to make -- though not as unfortunate as the candlestick attack, appetizer toss, and general chaos that then ensues. For more information or to purchase tickets please visit our website at www.paperbagplayers.com You can also drop us an email at info@paperbagplayers.com or find us on Facebook as Yorkton Paper Bag Players.

Restaurants
Whether you are looking for a quick coffee and muffin for the road, or a fancy dinner with wine to celebrate a special occasion, you will find just the right place in Yorkton. “We are fortunate in Yorkton to have a diverse range of restaurants,” said Randy Goulden, manager of Tourism Yorkton. People who are traveling for holidays often look at different dining experiences as a big part of their holiday, noted Goulden. Fine Dining Manos 277 Broadway St. E. (Parkland Mall) 306.786.7555 The finest food quality, with the best possible service at the best possible price. Mr. Mikes Steakhouse Casual 35 - 275 Broadway St. E. 306.783.6453 Best steaks in town. “If you’ve been traveling all day it’s nice to sit back and let someone else do the cooking, not to mention the dishes,” said Goulden. And even if you are staying in the city for a few days, getting out with family and friends to talk over a cup of good coffee, or a full meal, is a good way to relax. “Food and conversation have always gone hand-in-hand, so why not check out one of the options in the city and enjoy the food and company,” said Goulden.

Yorkton’s largest snowmobile event raises money for Easter Seals Saskatchewan. “snowmobile friendly” trail system means you can access city amenities right from your sled. Jesmer said it is the participants who make the event a success. “The community involvement and continued support have made Snowarama the long term success that it is,” she said. “Many of the riders participated in the very first Snowarama and have great stories to share. “The Snowarama committee is also a dedicated group and many have been involved since the first event in 1977. And of course the group of dedicated riders that attend each year, regardless of the snow conditions, they raise funds and make a difference to children with disabilities.” Call 1-866-301-0031 for more information or online at www.snowarama.ca

Tourism Yorkton
When it comes to hosting an event, whether it’s a business meeting, a major convention, wedding, or sporting event, Yorkton has the facilities. “That’s one of the great things about a city like Yorkton, its small enough anyone coming into an event can find their way around easily, but we are large enough to have a full range of quality services,” said Tourism Yorkton Executive Director Randy Goulden. Goulden said it starts with accommodations and food. “Whether you need a room for a night, or to book 100 rooms for a convention Yorkton has a number of fine hotels and motels,” she said. “And our restaurants range from providing burgers on the go as you travel, to those offering fine dining. “There are of course private areas in some of the restaurants for small meetings as well.” When it comes to larger gatherings, that perfect wedding, or fraternal convention, Yorkton has the facilities for that too. The Painted Hand Casino, SIGN on Broadway, St. Gerard’s Cultural Centre, St. Mary’s Cultural Centre, Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre and the City’s own Gallagher Centre all have spaces to accommodate gatherings from just a few intimate friends, to a high level business gathering, to provincial conventions.
“We’re fortunate in Yorkton to have such a range of facilities,” said Goulden. “It has allowed the city to be the site of events from the Parkland Expo and Sunflower Craft Show & Sale, the annual SUN convention and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation convention.” Should someone need a little help planning an event in the city Tourism Yorkton can help there as well. They have a Convention and Event Planning Guide and a Wedding Planning Guide on their website; www.tourismyorkton.com

Yorkton Winter Activities
It may be winter, with all its snow and cold temperatures, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things for tourists to do in Yorkton. “Yorkton remains an active city even when the temperatures dip,” said Tourism Yorkton manager Randy Goulden. “There’s always something to do to enjoy even on the coldest of days.” So just what can visitors to Yorkton find to enjoy in the winter months? Goulden said it really depends what a person enjoys. “You can start by enjoying the varied cuisine available in the city,” she said. “We’ve always had fine restaurants, but in recent years we have seen greater diversity in menus which is reflective of the growing ethnic diversity in the city.” “Whether you’re looking for a good steak, great pub fare, pasta, or something a bit more adventurous like sushi, you will find it in Yorkton,” she said. And you will want a hearty meal so you are ready for the adventures ahead in the city. “The Yorkton branch of the Western Development Museum tells the story of immigration to Saskatchewan, and should be on every visitors ‘to-do’ list,” said Goulden. “The displays are great, and a video theatre really enhances the experience of learning about our province’s history.” The Yorkton WDM’s winter hours are; August to December, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. weekends, closed on statutory holidays. From January to March the hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. weekends and closed Mondays and statutory holidays. If art is more to your liking the Godfrey Dean Gallery is the place to visit. “The Gallery is really a gem for a city our size,” said Goulden. “Shows often highlight artists noted across Canada, but there is also a dedication to showcase local art. It’s a great balance which provides some extraordinary shows.” The Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Closed on Sundays and public holidays. The Gallagher Centre is also a place to check out on any visit to the city. “The Aquatic Centre is a tourist draw on its own,” said Goulden. “The water slide, wave pool and whirl pool are all favourites with swimmers.” For more info please call 306-786-1740 or email www. gallagherkiosk@yorkton.ca for hours of operation. The Gallagher Centre is also home to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s defending champion Yorkton Terriers and minor hockey teams across all age groups. “The curling rink hosts some great action over the winter too,” offered Goulden. And the Nexera Flexihall has a walking track for those wanting some exercise away from the snow, and often hosts trade shows and events. If you enjoy the outdoors in winter, Yorkton offers many options to get out with nature. “There is cross country skiing at Deer Park Golf Course, and families love Rodney Ridge as a place to toboggan,” said Goulden.
The city is also the hub of an extensive snowmobile trail system which covers most of East Central Saskatchewan, and beyond. “Snowmobiling is a very popular winter activity, and the well-kept trail system extends right into the city so riders have access to services such as restaurants, fuel and lodging,” said Goulden. Then to end the day there is usually music and entertainment to be found in the city. “The Yorkton Arts Council’s Stars for Saskatchewan offers a pretty diverse group of concerts each season,” said Goulden. There are always other festivals and events going on in the city, most listed in this booklet, or on the Tourism Yorkton website at http://www.tourismyorkton.com/

The Gallagher Centre
The Gallagher Centre in Yorkton is a central gathering point for events throughout the fall and winter. When snow is blanketing the ground many look to the Gallagher Centre Water Park for a place to relax and have fun. The Water Park features a two-story waterslide, a wave pool with zero depth beach entry, lazy river, hot tub, steam and sauna rooms and a 25-metre, five lane swimming pool.
That means there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy. An exciting aquatic climbing wall, which boasts one and a half stories of intense climbing for all ages, is another popular feature at the water park. Either side of the wall represents a different difficulty level and when the panels get re-arranged there are new challenges to be faced. The wall offers hours of fun for those who climb to the top – then fall into the deep water. The wall is open to the public during leisure swim times. For those looking for something less physical there are the water options, including just relaxing in hot tub, sauna and steam room. And the water park has a range of admission fees to fit all budgets, with special rates for large groups they also offer small ‘family sized’ group rates, provided 1 – 2 adults are a part of the group and new, and more affordable, monthly passes available, making it even more available for avid swimmers to visit. Party packages including a private party room, food from our in-house concession and hours of fun in the pool are also just a phone call away. The Farrell Agencies Arena (FAA) is of course a focal point as the ice arena is the home of the Yorkton Figure Skating Club, Yorkton Terriers, Yorkton RawTec Maulers, and numerous minor hockey teams. In the case of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Terriers they are a perennially strong team having won dbackto-back league titles in 2013 and 2014, as well as winning the RBC Cup emblematic of a Canadian championship in 2014. The Terrier schedule can be found at www.yorktonterriers. com The FAA is Yorkton’s favourite ice arena for local recreational hockey groups and various private ice rentals. Free public skating is available at the Farrell Agencies Arena Sunday evenings, when no hockey games are scheduled. The FAA is also ideal to host concerts as well as large events like Pow Wows, the Morris equipment unveiling and the John Deer trade show. The FAA is able to accommodate events up to 2600 people. The Nexera Flexihall as a facility is most commonly used as a sports facility hosting track meets, walking track patrons, soccer and volleyball tournaments and tennis. The Nexera Flexihall is also a popular alternative for large functions such as grad, tradeshows, special events celebrations and concerts. The Nexera Flexihall is able to accommodate events up to 1200 people. Continued on Page 29 • MOTOR LICENCE ISSUER • HOME • AUTO • FARM •COMMERCIAL • INDUSTRIAL • TRAVEL • HEALTH CARE

Snowboard Hill A winter activity is being offered in Yorkton once the snow flies. By unanimous vote early in 2014 Yorkton Council gave its approval for a snowboard hill in the city on Rodney Ridge which is located on Roslyn Avenue. Darcy McLeod, Director of Community Development, Parks & Recreation, told Council at the time a hill for snowboarders has been a consideration for a while in the city.
In the fall of 2013, the discussion turned to Rodney Ridge as there is a natural slope that could be used on the north end of the Park. The hill has been developed with local ‘boarder’ input. The community members have designed features for the slope and will be responsible for all costs to build, install, maintain and remove the features. The hill becomes operational once sufficient snow has fallen.

Kids Expo
Whether you are a parent, grandparent, or young child, one of the events you will want to mark on the calendar is the annual Kids Expo. Now a familiar event in Yorkton, the 2018 edition of the Expo will be on March 17 and 18. The Saskatchewan Abilities Council, in collaboration with Joey’s Events is proud to the present the 2018 Kids Expo! The Yorkton Branch of the Saskatchewan Abilities Council continues to grow while working to build an inclusive community. Deana Jesmer, Community Relations Coordinator for the Yorkton Branch looks forward to the new relationships, “We are grateful to be hosting an already successful event and look forward to adding another component to it. Providing an event that is inclusive to all kids of all abilities is important to everyone who looks forward to and attends the Kids Expo.” The Kids Expo will continue to have the same sampling of exciting exhibitors, entertainment, and excitement for kids that has been created the past five years, ensuring everyone can participate in the event. Joelle Smart of Joey’s Events is also excited about the 2018 Kid’s Expo, “I’m really looking forward to partnering with the Saskatchewan Abilities Council. This project has always been so close to my heart since it started five years ago! With the support of our local community I have seen this event grow into something amazing and I am so thrilled that the Saskatchewan Abilities Council will keep its roots while creating an event that is inclusive to all children!” The Yorkton Branch provides services for children with varying abilities through several programs; FunAbilities, Summer Fun, SLYP-Out, Mental Health Services, and several individuals from Yorkton and area attend Camp Easter Seal! “There is a growing need for
services for children and youth and the Kids Expo is a great way to inform the public of that, all while celebrating the excitement and wonder of being a kid!” explains Jesmer. The Expo is a fun outing in March where families can see countless products and have a great time, while supporting their community. The next Expo will offer a mix of popular booths from the past, and new offerings as well. Join us March 17 and 18 at the Gallagher Centre Flexi Hall for the 2018 Kids Expo!
Indoor Water Park The Gallagher Centre Water Park is a rare oasis for visitors to enjoy. Located at Yorkton’s west end along Broadway Street it features a two-story waterslide, a wave pool with zero depth beach entry, lazy river, hot tub, steam and sauna rooms and a 25-metre, five lane swimming pool. An exciting aquatic climbing wall boasts one and a half stories of intense climbing for all ages. Either side of the wall presents a different difficulty level. Be ready for a surprise when the panels get re-arranged to give even more of a challenge! The wall offers hours of fun for those who climb to the top – then fall into the deep water. What other
fitness regime can offer this much fun? The wall is open to the public during leisure swim times. There are a range of admission fees to fit all budgets. With monthly special events and extended leisure swim times on civic holidays it’s a great place to spend time with family on a visit to Yorkton or when just stopping through – all you need is a swim suit and a sense of adventure.
