WMBL Cardinals When you are looking for a night outdoors in the summertime few things are more relaxing than a baseball game. In Yorkton that means a trip to Jubilee Park in Yorkton to watch the Yorkton Cardinals of the Western Major Baseball League. The WMBL which is recognized as one of the top summer leagues offers fans a summer league for college-age players from across Canada and the United States. “The league mandate is to give at least 100 Canadians an opportunity to compete in Summer Collegiate baseball thus creating a more limited U.S. and/or foreign presence. Rightly so, it gives Canadians a place to compete,” said long-time Cardinal manager Bill Sobkow. Sobkow added that the league does attract players who are ready to be drafted or are refining their skills for more draft attention. “This one factor alone puts the league into a level of something higher than Professional Rookie baseball,” he said. CARDINALS HOME SCHEDULE: May 29 Melville at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. June 1 Swift Current at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. June 2 Swift Current at Yorkton 11:30 a.m. June 7 Lethbridge at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. June 8 Moose Jaw at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. June 10 Lethbridge at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. June 11 Melville at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. June 17 Melville at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. June 19 Regina at Yorkton 2:05 p.m. June 22 Weyburn at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. June 23 Moose Jaw at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. June 24 Regina at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. June 27 Medicine Hat at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. June 28 Medicine Hat at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. July 1 Moose Jaw at Yorkton 2:05 p.m. July 4 Weyburn at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. July 5 Moose Jaw at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. July 7 Brooks at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. July 8 Brooks at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. July 10 Melville at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. July 23 Weyburn at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. July 24 Swift Current at Yorkton 2:05 p.m. July 27 Weyburn at Yorkton 7:05 p.m. July 28 Regina at Yorkton 7:05 p.m.

The high calibre of talent means fans are in for the best baseball on the Canadian Prairies, especially when you consider players such as shortstop Andrelton Simmons currently with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and former San Francisco Giants pitcher Dan Runzler are Cardinal alumni. The team connects with the city’s past too. “Our area has a very rich history of baseball,” said Sobkow. “Since the game is America’s pastime, a great deal of this spills into Canada. People are enamoured by the fact that baseball is a sport that encompasses so much of a player’s physical ability with how his mind is able to interact with all the intricacies of the game.” Fans can take in evening games under the lights which generally start at 7:05 p.m. More information is available at www.yorktoncardinalsbaseball.com

Film Festival Lovers of film need to plan a visit to the annual Yorkton Film Festival, held every May; the longest running film festival in North America. Each year the Festival works hard to offer a variety of programs and workshops to help filmmakers hone their craft. The first day of the Festival focuses on student filmmakers, with a day long program at Sacred Heart High School. “Students filmmakers are so enthusiastic and we feel it is important to feed that enthusiasm,” said YFF director Randy Goulden. “We have many talented professionals attending the Festival and having them willing to work with students for the day is a great learning experience for both.” “Like the Festival itself has, we recognize the industry is constantly changing,” said Goulden. “We hope our programs help filmmakers take those changes in stride so they can continue to do what they do best, make great Canadian programming.” As an example; this year a highlight presentation will be AR and VR: What’s going on and why should we care? Technology is moving fast; AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) are at the forefront. While these two share some similarities, they are very different, and can mean different things for filmmakers and audiences. This panel will go in-depth with these new technologies, and discuss what opportunities they can provide for both filmmakers and audiences! Presenting the topic will be Ana Serrano – CFC Media Lab. For the public, there are film screenings throughout the Festival, with a screening of winning entries open to the public and festival participants at the Gallagher Centre Sunday. For more information on the annual festival visit: yorktonfilm.com. This

year, the film “The Sabbatical” will be featured at the Painted Hand Casino in the Parkland Room, Thursday night at 7:00 pm. “The Sabbatical” is about James Pittman, a burnt-out photography professor, who goes on sabbatical and straight into a mid-life crisis. A young artist named Lucy comes into his life and he tries desperately to recapture the lost spirit of his youth. Directed by Brian Stockton, starring James Whittingham, Laura Abramsen, and Bernadette Mullen. “The Sabbatical” was shot entirely in Regina, Saskatchewan. The YFF is thrilled to be bringing this film to their audience this year. As for the coveted Golden Sheaf Awards, they have been garnered by the likes of Cordell Barker, who was twice nominated for Oscars, and Frederic Bach, who went on to capture two Oscars for his work. “It’s great to have the recognizable stars come to the Festival, but the event is just as much about the cameramen and producers working hard behind the camera to create the films,” said Goulden. “They are the ones we really come together to honour with the Golden Sheaf Awards.” The Golden Sheaf Awards Gala, presented by Painted Hand Casino is the highlight of the Festival, as the coveted awards are presented in a range of categories. “The Golden Sheaf Awards presented over the years sit prominently on a lot of mantelpieces and desks across this country, and we look forward each year to seeing what films and filmmakers our hard working jury have selected,” said Goulden. Over the years, many stars who have visited the Festival. In fact, the festival has been visited by some very interesting Canadians - Bruno Gerussi, Gordon Pinsent, Barry Morse to name a few. Which is all part of the Festival’s proud history. Continued on Page 9

Continued from Page 8 It was in October, 1950, that the projector first “whirred into action, the screen lit up and the sights and sounds of life filled the stillness of city hall,” details the Festival’s history on its website. “So it was that the first Yorkton International Documentary Film Festival became a reality.” Randy Goulden, executive director with the YFF, said it is a long, and proud history of film that they celebrate each year. “Canada has a proud film tradition, and we are equally proud to celebrate the industry’s best each year,” she said. The website again details the early history of the event. “The festival was the brain-child of James Lysyshyn, oft-times referred to in the years to follow as the “father of the Yorkton International Documentary Film Festival”. Lysyshyn was a young National Film Board field officer at the time. He had been stationed in Saskatchewan with a mandate to set up film councils in his area of jurisdiction, which after a time came to include Yorkton. Hearing about an arts festival being held in Europe, as well as music and science festivals in other parts of Canada, he came up with the idea for a film festival. At the time Yorkton had a very active film council organized by Dave Sharples, who had been a wartime projectionist. Lysyshyn then decided to pitch his

Page 9

idea to them. “The first meeting with the council met with little success. The council members felt there were not enough new films being produced in Canada. Lysyshyn didn’t take no for an answer. He requested a meeting with the council the next month and touted his new idea for an international documentary film festival. The council liked the idea and the Yorkton International Documentary Film Festival was born. It was decided to hold the festival in two years due to the time involved in soliciting entries from foreign countries.” Entries for the first festival, in 1950, came from India, Brazil, Denmark, Australia, Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, and Britain. Canada had many entries, including five from Saskatchewan. “The Royal Winter Fair by the National Film Board was selected by the audience as the winning film at that first festival. Second and third place went to entries from India and the United States.” Goulden said over the years the Festival has evolved. “It was initially an international event, but over the years came to focus only on the best of Canadian film. Today the festival still looks to honour the best from filmmakers in our country, with special attention being paid to young and emerging filmmakers because they are the future of the industry.”

Godfrey Dean Art Gallery The Godfrey Dean Art Gallery, is a small, intimate gallery were visitors can get up close to work ranging from local to national artists. Located on the corner of Smith Street and Third Avenue, and adjacent to the historic Land Titles Building, the Yorkton Gallery is comprised of two galleries which together total over 2,000 square feet of exhibit space. The GDG proudly represents contemporary artwork from local, regional and national artists. Exhibits change on roughly a monthly basis making repeated visits a must for regular travelers, especially with the free admission. The aim of the gallery is to offer as much variety in subject matter and various artistic mediums and styles as possible. Galley Director Don Stein said the Godfrey Dean has an inviting atmosphere visitors will enjoy, adding the first thing which comes to his mind “is how beautiful and welcoming it is.” “Large windows surrounding the lobby keep it well lit, and the 2nd floor vantage point offers an expansive view of the streetscape, buildings and lots of trees.” “The two exhibition spaces themselves are also surprisingly spacious, with high ceilings and plenty of wall space.” The Yorkton region has a unique cultural blend. It is the responsibility of its public art gallery, The Godfrey Dean, to reflect the issues and concerns within this community. “Our local resources are what distinguishes the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery,” said Stein. “People want to see art that reflects the local community and environment in some way. The gallery has the unique ability to draw on local and regional artists and exhibit

their work, which is often inspired by our area, and the people who inhabit it. Visitors, especially tourists, appreciate the opportunity to see artists whose work is readily available to us in Yorkton, but not in other locations. Yorkton Exhibition It would not be summer with a fair. In Yorkton that means visiting the city July 6-9 for the annual exhibition. “Summer fairs are always fun,” said Yorkton Exhibition Association (YEA) General Manager Mike Thorley, who is in his first summer at the helm. “And that is our goal, to offer a range of entertainment that ensures fun for all ages.” As always the fair will include some the long-time favourite attractions, including the thrills of the midway. West Coast Amusements makes sure fair patrons can ride the ferris wheel, bumper cars and numerous other rides until their heart’s content. New this year will be performances of the ‘Hockey Circus Show’ which was part of the Ron McLean Hometown Hockey program in many communities over the NHL season, said Thorley. “It’s one of our specialty acts and it’s a new and interesting one,” he said. For the younger audience the petting zoo returns, and is always popular, said Thorley. ‘I Flip’, a show incorporating bungee jumps, trampolines and other amazing feats is also new, said Thorley. The Princess and Superheroes Show will once again be on the grounds entertaining youngsters too. For a slightly older audience the always popular Lumberjack show returns after a couple of year’s absence. Also returning is three days of pony chuck wagon and chariot racing. Light Horse show, food booths, various other entertainment, etc. populate the week! “The thrills of the ponies running the track are always

popular, and fans can look forward to three exciting days,” said Thorley. The parade is a highlight on Saturday, winding its way down Broadway Street. The event brings together local marching bands, horses and riders, antique cars, decorated floats, and more as a visual thrill for viewers. For the young at heart, The Backyardigans will be making mainstage appearances on that same Saturday. As for grandstand, the always popular GX94 Talent Search will go the evening of July 9. The talent from across Saskatchewan and Manitoba are always popular, with many supporters coming out to cheer on their favourites. Other grandstand performances include veterans of Canadian rock’n’roll Kenny Shield and Streetheart who hit the stage Friday evening. “If you are a fan of classic rock in Canada, you are likely a fan of Streetheart. It should be a great performance with lots of recognizable songs to sing along too,” said Thorley. Continued on Page 13

Continued from Page 12 A great finale to the week will be the Fireworks Show at sundown on Saturday July 9th! While known for the Summer Fair the YEA has actively been adding entertainment events to its schedule. In July, the smell of diesel and the whine of big engines take over Cornerstone Raceway as the Truck & Tractor Pulls arrive in the city July 22 and 23. Everybody loves big roaring motors, and spinning tires kicking up dirt, so the weekend will be a popular one. And each November agriculture takes centre stage with the annual Grain Millers Harvest Showdown. In terms of agriculture education the YEA remains committed to hosting school tours for students, and Harvest Showdown focuses on that. The Grain Millers Harvest Showdown also incorporates the popular Yorkton New Holland Indoor Rodeo, commercial cattle shows and sale, Ranch Rodeo and horse pulls plus many other agricultural events.

Western Development Museum - Story of People For a glimpse of life over the past century head to the Yorkton branch of the Western Development Museum. Located on Highway 16A West, the WDM celebrates the cultural roots of Western Canadian settlers with a variety of displays including the interactive Winning The Prairie Gamble: The Saskatchewan Story’ centennial exhibit. The displays highlight Saskatchewan’s history, innovations, achievements and diversity with a focus on the cultural diversity of the province’s immigrants. Featured outdoors is an extensive line up of steam traction engines, gas tractors, plows and harvesting equipment all of which were instrumental in developing the province as a major grains producer. Public programs to note include Yorkton’s only Canada Day celebrations July 1 each summer, an event the WDM has hosted for over 30 years. Other special Events include: May 2016 May 1: “Mommy & Me” Cookies and Tea May 22: Discovery Box Family Programming June 2016 June 5: Movies at the Museum June 12: “Daddy and I” Coffee and Pie June 26: Movies at the Museum

Prairie Thunder Drags The smell of burning rubber and the sound of raw horsepower can be enjoyed at the Kambusters annual Prairie Thunder 1/8 mile drag races, cruise night and car show. Everything can be seen during the weekend from pampered street cars, to full blown dragster motorcycles – ready to race. “It was an idea that a few car club members had,” said Kambusters president Wade Stachura. “We had some really nice cars and we wanted to race them. Esterhazy was running drag races on their airport, so we figured that maybe we could race somewhere as well.” The Yorkton event is now in its 13th year. “Over the years we have grown quite a bit,” said Stachura. “We have more cars and the cars are a lot faster now. We have a reputation of having one of the best tracks for traction, so this brings out more powerful cars. We also have a larger number of spectators. We also have feature cars that will run

exhibition runs. “The reason for this growth is people can come out to see these cars run and they don’t have to travel very far. Drag racing is becoming more popular all around. Everybody likes to see some smoke and hear the noise.” There will be a test and tune on Saturday, July 16 from 2 to 9 p.m., and gates will open at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, July 17 at the Yorkton Municipal Airport. About 150 cars are expected to compete in the event. “We have cars the come from Western Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Eastern Alberta. We have had people from all over Western Canada stop in and watch the drags,” said Stachura. For additional information call Kambusters President Wade Stachura at 306-621-3787 or Frank Pohozoff at 306-641-6276 for details, or visit the Kambusters website at www.kambusters.com

Geocaching If you like a good mystery and you want to go on a grand adventure, then geocaching might be just what you need to try. In recent years the hobby of geocaching has been growing, and with that growth the opportunity to enjoy the activity while traveling. Geocaching uses global positioning technology to help with what is essentially a modern take on a treasure hunt. It’s a case where other people hide things all over the place (outdoors generally), and then other people go out and find them using the GPS coordinates. There are specialized GPS tracking units which can be used; Magellan and Garmin two of the bestknown, but cellphones work too using various apps for iPhone and Android which link directly to the geocaching site. The coordinates to the hidden spots are posting at www.geocaching.com, an Internet site which acts as a hub for sharing information with geocachers around the world. The site has thousands of caches to seek out around the world. There are some 40 in

Yorkton and 500 in Regina as examples, and is free to sign up for. Some caches are active year-round. Others, especially on the Canadian Prairies are hidden only through the warmer months. In some cases there are connections to history with many caches related to old school yards, cemeteries and similar locations. Often information of the locales is included on the geocaching site. While geocaching seems to be pretty widely based, there are some rules. Caches are not supposed to be buried underground making access too hard, as an example. Cachers also rarely post pictures of where a cache is located for fear it will make it easier to the next searcher to find. After that it is pretty wide open. One international cache was actually a building, while the smallest are the size of the fingernail on your little finger. Since the sizes vary, and chases are hidden, GPS gets you only so far. So when you’re within 10-metres you start looking.

pARTners Gallery A colourful retreat can be found at community pARTners gallery, located in the Yorkton Public Library, dedicated to bringing artwork by local, area, and provincial artists to our community. Open during library hours, it’s a wonderful way to connect with what’s happening in the world of familiar and emerging prairie artists. Co-ordinated by the Yorkton Arts Council and the Yorkton Public Library, displays are changed on a bi-monthly basis. Works reflecting a variety of themes and techniques are generally offered for sale. Artists interested in exhibiting work are asked to please leave contact info at the library or the arts council office. May 1, 2016 - June 27 will feature “The Artists of Yorkdale!” an exhibition of student work from the students at Yorktdale Central School. The students have been working hard all winter to create this collection of works for you to enjoy. July 1- August 23, 2016: A Sense of Place Bryce Erickson and Bob Pitzel explore the rural setting with intense precision and stunning detail. Both artists are located in central Saskatchewan; Bob Pitzel in Humboldt and Bryce Erickson in Watrous.

Erickson works in oils and interprets memories through the golden ratio. From his artist statement: “Nominally a realist painter, I make no attempt to faithfully record what I see and remember. I am not a camera with a paint brush for output. Rather, I take my visual data apart and re-assemble them using long-established geometric constructs and conventions. Such processes and tools provide a rational, demonstrable certainty to the dispersal of pictoral elements of a painting.” Pitzel uses watercolor to examine his prairie home, from his website: “His use of detail, color and light; with patterns of geometric verses organic shapes, articulate the monumental prairie landscape. Within this fabric of rural life, Bob’s keen observation of daily life and small town nuances often refresh memories of the subtle things people generally overlook.” This exhibition provides a study in rural Saskatchewan that is immersive and contemplative. Check out yorktonarts.ca and Yorkton Public Library on Facebook for other details. Our gallery can be enjoyed daily except after May long weekend when the library closes for summer Sundays until Thanksgiving.

Ravine Ecological Preserve Connecting with nature is as easy as exploring the Ravine Ecological Preserve in Yorkton. The Preserve offers a diverse 2.8 km hiking trail, which includes a floating boardwalk across the marsh, and then works its way through grassland, and aspen parkland habitat. Located just off Crescent Avenue and west of the Gallagher Centre, the park is designed to allow for people to connect with our natural world through an abundance of birds, plants and animals. The Ecological Preserve also holds its share of history, including the Dulmage farmstead. A farmer, inventor and entrepreneur Dulmage’s story is one of the points of interest on the walk, one of four mapped walking tours in the city. Darcy McLeod noted all four tours offer many points of interest with visitors no doubt each having the favourites. “None of the Walking tour books highlight any particular place. However, those who take the Cemetery Walking Tour would be interested in the older monuments, those that stand out because of

their size, prayer and message inscriptions, and old fashioned architecture,” he said. “Our tour book of the historic downtown has noted buildings which are designated as Municipal Heritage Properties. The attention is on the oldest buildings — the old homes, and churches, the Court House and the old Land Titles Office of the ‘Promise & Potential’ tour which all hold an individual specific interest.”

Motocross Racing Few sport events are any more thrilling than motocross. In Yorkton that means a trip to the Millstone Park Raceway which has been operated by the Yorkton Motorcycle Club for the past 16 years. Named the 2008 Motocross Track of the Year, the raceway is located two km north of Yorkton on the #9 Highway next to Millstone Park, the original site of Yorkton. The track is open daily to club members to sharpen racing and off-road handling skills. Daily and yearly riding passes are available for non-members Monday to Saturday at Schrader Motors during normal business hours. Parental accompaniment is required for riders under 18 years of age. A kiddies’ or beginner track is available for beginning riders. As well, the club offers a riding school for novice riders, dates to be announced. “One of the very unique things about motocross is that racers of all ages, genders and abilities complete on the same day on the same track,” said local sport spokesperson Rick Bradshaw. “Although there are a number of different classes to group riders by ability and ages, there are very few if any sports where an entire family compete on the same day. New spectators are often surprised by the ability of a rider only to discover they are a 12-year-old girl then watch as two 50-year-old men bang bars and battle back and forth with the stamina of men half their ages. Watching a couple of the top professional racers in the country battle for a win then congratulate each other after 20-minutes of competition shows the sportsmanship that motocross racers have.” And fans will love the track too to enjoy the high-flying action, spinning rubber and flying dirt associated with the sport.

“Yorkton’s Millstone Raceway facility is great for spectator access as they can walk around the fenced inside of over half of the race track and see the action from a variety of viewpoints,” said Bradshaw. “With the area being located next to the highway access is great. Plus, the club always does one of the best race preparation jobs in the province so the track is well watered and groomed for awesome race action.” “Motocross is a very exciting sport. The start of a race can have up to 40 racers on the line together heading in the first turn. New spectators love the high jumps and bumps. All enthusiasts enjoy the close racing action and many come to realize the great skill it takes to make a lap let alone multiple laps at racing speed. This year the track will host a CMRC Provincial Championship race Sunday, September 18. For more information about the track or the motocross race call Rick Bradshaw at 783-3333, or Rick Dawson at 621-1426.

Walking Tours Taking a leisurely walk and taking in the history of the city is easy in Yorkton thanks to four walking tours. It’s a way to “connect you to the past,” said Darcy McLeod, Director of Community Development, Parks & Recreation with the City, adding they familiarize visitors “with some of the history of Yorkton. “One can observe details at close range, otherwise missed as you quickly walk or drive. “With walking with a tour book in hand, makes

you an ‘acceptable snoop’. Walking with a group — and people can organize their own group — makes it also more ‘socially acceptable’ to stop and admire, for example the gargoyles of the old Hudson’s Bay store building.” Walking Tours allow you to do this exercise at your own pace,” said McLeod. Visitors like the tours as a way to get to know the city better. There are several walking tours in Yorkton offering glimpses of the City’s heritage and culture.

City Cemetery Walking Tour A self-guided walking tour of the City of Yorkton Cemetery gives visitors a chance to experience the unique history of the area. It guides visitors along the pathways of this beautifully treed 10.5 acres, a book containing 28 sites has been prepared and can be purchased for $3. The complete tour will take about one hour and a half, but can be shortened. Stroll at your

leisure, as you follow the trail outlines on the book’s map. There are benches at various locations in the cemetery where a visitor can rest. On the tour you will meet many of the early pioneers, and some of the more contemporary figures of Yorkton and area; all interesting and colourful personalities. In the process, much of the region’s history will be revealed.

VALUE TIRE

Heritage Walking Tour Often the history of a community can only be found in dusty book and by looking at faded photos. But the history of Yorkton is alive and well in the form of a self-guided walking tour. The tour begins at the Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre on Smith Street and ends at 29 Myrtle Avenue. If you proceed at a leisurely pace, the walk will take about an hour and a half. For a brochure on the tour, contact Tourism Yorkton by calling 783-8707.

Yorkton’s Public Art Walking Tour Enjoy exploring Yorkton! You’re invited to follow a special guide through downtown parks and around historic sites. In public places and hidden spaces you will find Yorkton is a city filled with art.

This guide will also lead you to special exhibition spaces where unexpected treasures await you each time you visit. To obtain your guide and/or further details, contact Tourism Yorkton at 783-8707.

Birding Opportunities Birdwatching is a favoured activity of many on vacation, and the Yorkton area is a wonderful spot with many excellent locations to discover. For those wanting to search out local species the Tourism Yorkton Centre has copies of ‘Gone to the Birds’ a special information sheet showcasing all of the birding opportunities in the area. The brochure includes everything from viewing tips, to details on where to look for the wildlife you are interested in. Eleven spectacular birding opportunities are highlighted and waiting to be discovered. June 5, 2003 marked the inception of the YFBTA which works to promote awareness of the importance of preserving and protecting spaces for wildlife to exist. YFBTA works to promote these spaces and to facilitate tourism. “Birds are symbolic of nature. Migration is an incredible feat and it is, to say the very least, remarkable that they can travel incredible distances in volatile weather to arrive each spring. Many of the birds are sporting wonderful plumage in spring,” said Rob Wilson with the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association (YFBTA), who added there is a near inherent interest most of us have in birds, and the local area is a good place to feed that interest. Throughout the summer, excursions in nature are organized by association members. For details or to be a part of the outings

check the website at www.yfbta.com or find us on Facebook, Yellowhead Flyway Birding. The area of the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trails Association extends from the Manitoba border west to Highway 9. The southern part of the area begins with the Qu’Apelle Valley and its northern boundary lies north of Highway 10. There are currently five birding trails within the YFBTA region: The Carlton Trail Regional Park, Cherrydale Golf Course and Nature Preserve, Kaposvar Trail, Leflay Trail and Slough View Park. “I think our birding group attracts members because many people although not able to be active or choosing not be active are nonetheless interested in being supportive of the advocacy. I believe that most people feel a sense of responsibility to ensuring that enough spaces and places are preserved facilitate the stopping, resting, feeding and sheltering that are an essential component of the migration process that birds attempt twice each year,” offered Wilson. The YFBTA is affiliated with Nature Saskatchewan which publishes ‘Nature Views’ and ‘The Blue Jay’.

Logan Green Trout Pond Want a leisurely time tossing a few hooks in the hopes of enticing a trout to take a bite, then head over to the Logan Green Water Reuse Pond in Yorkton. The area has been developed as a fish pond, in cooperation with the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation as it fits with the organization’s mandate “to create new fisheries in urban areas.” The initial step was to determine the feasibility of stocking the pond and man-made steam work undertaken by the Fisheries Project Coordinator of the SWF. Once it was determined that fish would likely be viable they had to develop suitable habitat. The habitat development included riffles in the stream, areas of stone which create pool areas, and help aerate water as it passes over the riffle area. That work was started earlier in 2012, and algae and insects in the water, which biologically speaking is a positive sign, began to appear quickly. There was also vegetation started along the water way to create a complete habitat. The City of Yorkton along with Yorkton and Saskatchewan Wildlife Federations, and the Assiniboine Watershed Stewardship Association stocked the pond in the spring of 2014. Rainbow Trout were the fish of choice. The fish grew well over the first summer, and were being caught off flies by fall, and they overwintered meaning bigger fish lurk in the pond now.

The pond is catch and release, with signage on-site detailing specific rules. The project is having benefits beyond local fishing, with the potential to develop educational programs for the public, but particularly for students.

Skateboard Park Skateboard parks are a gathering place for youth. And a place to show off skills in a sport with a growing base and increased recognition of what it takes to be great at the sport. So, if you are headed to Yorkton, don’t forget to pack your boards as the city boasts one of the premier outdoor skateboard parks in the province. The park right off Broadway Street in the city is part of a larger Brodie Avenue Redevelopment, which includes a paved walking path, which connects with Patrick Park Disc Golf Course. The new park is concrete and includes a range

of jump elements which are sure to be both a challenge and a thrill for users, and one the snow melts each spring becomes a very busy recreational facility in Yorkton Skaters planning a holiday in the city, or just passing through, will want to make sure to check it out. The park was a community effort becoming a reality after the project received a $150,000 investment prize from Aviva Community Fund Contest toward a new facility. In addition to the Aviva dollars the City of Yorkton matched the win.

Disc Golf Disc golf in the parkland region is expanding rapidly and Yorkton is the hub of the activity. Locally, Patrick Park Disc Golf Course is the venue to experience the sport. Opened in June 2011, the nine basket course has proved a challenge for experienced disc golfers with trees to manoeuvre through from almost every tee box, and yet forgiving for beginners since the course does not have hazards where discs can be lost. The original nine at Patrick Park is a par-27 and covers 2379-feet. The experience was expanded in 2015, through an initiative spear-headed by local players, and supported by the City, to install a set of nine alternate tee boxes, which afford players an opportunity to play a ‘back-nine’ with new approaches to the existing baskets. The ‘back-nine’ is a par-33 and extends the course by 3037-feet, by utilizing some new disc golf features, in particular several mandatories, specific features a player’s disc must pass around in a particular direction — left-or-right of the marked feature. To promote the growth of the sport players are encouraged to come out Tuesday evenings from May through until September. It is a night for players of all skill levels, with more experience players more than happy to help beginners get a feel for the sport. Plans are also underway to host a few night rounds; LED lights are attached to discs, with the baskets also lit. Such an event was held as a Halloween treat in 2015, and participants had so much fun additional night rounds will occur this summer. For those with a competitive edge Yorkton’s Second Annual Trilogy Challenge will be held Sunday, Aug. 28. The event was launched last year and attracted disc golfers from Battlefords, Regina and Benito, MB., and it is hoped this year numbers will crack SOLD

the 50-participant level. To further promote the sport not only locally, but regionally, disc golf supporters met in the city last November to lay the framework to create the Parkland Association of Disc Golf. The PADG has a very simple Mission Statement: To promote the sport and recreational benefits of disc golf across the Parkland Region. That said the new Association does represent a growing number of courses — all within an easy 125 km radius drive of Yorkton. As the snow melted in the spring of 2015 there were only three courses is that area, Benito, MB, Kemoca Regional Park at Montmartre and Patrick Park in the city. By the time the 2015 season came to an end there were 10 courses installed and playable in the region, with several more planned. And now this year those planned courses are moving forward. “We anticipate at least doubling the number of courses in the PADG region this year, that would mean 20 courses,” said interim PADG chair Calvin Daniels. “We already have courses in Birtle, MB, Moosomin and Ituna Regional Parks already Continued on Page 37

Continued from Page 36 planned from last fall being installed as weather permits this spring. “And there has been amazing interest already this year even when the snow was still knee deep. Communities such as Stockholm, Kelvington, Whitesand Regional Park and Asessippi Beach and Campground have already green-lit course installs, and we’ve had inquiries from at least a dozen other communities and parks.” To help promote disc golf and the growing number of courses the PADG is planning a tournament series. “These events are going to be very beginner player friendly, but participants will earn points toward year-end recognition,” said PADG tournament chair Trevor Lyons.

Lyons explained that it is hoped each course in the PADG will host one event as part of the series. “We will be scheduling the events to make sure there are no date conflicts,” he said, adding the series will launch with the Springside Vibram Birdie Bash on Sunday, May 29. “We’re pretty excited about the series as a way to get players visiting area courses, which is great for tourism, and as a way to promote the new courses locally.” Other tournament events already scheduled include; • Rocanville - Doubles Team Tournament - June 26 • Asessippi Beach & Campground MM - July 1 • Sandy Beach on Good Spirit Lake - Dynamic Discs 2-disc Challenge - July 30 Continued on Page 38

Continued from Page 37 • Fort Qu’Appelle - ‘MVP Discs Tournament’ Sept.10 And, more events will be announced as the season continues. For those unfamiliar with the sport disc golf it “is a flying disc game, as well as a precision and accuracy sport, in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, “The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc. The number of disc golf courses doubled in the eight years from 2000 to 2008. The game is played in about 40 countries around the world.” Interestingly, according to one source, “the first known instance of anyone playing golf with a flying disc occurred in Bladworth, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1926. Ronald Gibson and a group of his Bladworth Elementary School buddies played a game throwing tin plates at targets such as trees and fence posts. They called the game Tin Lid Golf and played on a fairly regular basis on a disc golf course they laid out on their school grounds. But, after they grew older and went their separate ways, the game came to an end.”

“Modern disc golf started in the early 1960s, when it seems to have been invented in many places and by many people independently. Students at Rice University in Houston, Texas, for example, held tournaments with trees as targets as early as 1963 and in the early 1960s players in Pendleton King Park in Augusta, Georgia would toss Frisbees in 50-gallon barrel trash cans designated as targets.” The golf discs used today are much smaller and heavier than traditional flying discs, typically about eight or 9 inches (20 or 23 cm) in diameter and weighing between 90 and 180 grams. Discs used for disc golf are designed and shaped for control, speed, and accuracy. There is a wide variety of discs used in disc golf and they are generally divided into three categories: putters, all-purpose mid-range discs, and drivers. For those wanting to try the game, discs can be picked up at the City’s Parks Shop at 263 Myrtle Avenue during regular business hours. To stay connected with disc golf head to Facebook, search Disc Golf Courses of the Parkland and join other enthusiasts. And for more information email padg.yorkton@ gmail.com

Weinmaster Wheelchair Park An amenity many tourists will appreciate in Yorkton is a wheelchair accessible play structure. The structure is at Weinmaster Park (just off Morrison Drive, in northeast Yorkton). In 2010, the Weinmaster Accessible Play Structure Committee was formed following a needs assessment completed by the City of Yorkton and the Sunrise Health Region. This volunteer committee raised awareness of the need, and raised funds, to replace the old play structure in the park with a wheelchair accessible play structure. Having an accessible play structure is good for the community, was something the municipality was quick to support once there was local resident involvement All children need to play as it is essential for their physical, social and emotional wellbeing. An important aspect of playground design today is making sure all kids have access to play. Accessible play spaces are designed to encourage shared play among children of all physical abilities. A universally accessible playground is a play environment created to be wheelchair accessible throughout the entire structure and surrounding play area with more challenging paths of travel or activities along or beside the wheelchair accessible

routes. The accessible play structures also allow parents and caregivers to be nearby and play with their children. As part of the 2013 budget, Council approved the Weinmaster Park accessible play structure committing $250,000 towards this project. In addition the Weinmaster Accessible Play Structure Committee has successfully secured an additional $54,769.31 in fundraising for a total project amount of $304,769.31.
