Santa Parade
Everybody loves a parade. And no parade is better than one visited by Old Saint Nick himself. And that is why Yorkton’s 19th Annual Santa Claus Parade is so popular. Filled with colourful, festive floats, Christmas décor and cheer, and of course the man-of-the-hour Santa, the parade is guaranteed to mesmerize all who come out to watch. Penny Sandercock, one of the parade’s long time organizers said the parade was created as a way to kick-off the festive season. “It is a way of sharing a festive season with the community; giving to those that may not be as fortunate — small toys/free movies/hotdogs and hot chocolate — and allowing the local businesses to use that day for Christmas promotions in retail outlets ,” she said, adding it has proven very popular. “Hotels always fill up. The Gallagher Centre is used for skating and swimming and the community is a very busy place. Mervin Laird of the YBID and this year’s organizing Chair says “The day is usually kicked off with the Christmas lights on Broadway and Santa’s appearance at the Parkland Mall and there will be a free movie shown at the public library at 2:00.” The Yorkton Exhibition Association, Yorkton Business
Improvement District, City of Yorkton and Yorkton Chamber of Commerce join forces to make sure Santa has a bag of goodies to hand out that day too. And Yorkton Coop has again donated 3,000 Candy Canes that will be handed out along the parade Route by the volunteers. Prior to the parade, slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. caroling will be in the Western Financial City Park provided by GX94. The fun-filled event is guaranteed to light up the streets of Yorkton and brighten the holiday spirits. To take in the cheery lights and sounds just head to Broadway Street and you’re certain not to miss the action. Laird said the parade has become a seasonal favourite because of the joy it brings. “I think the joyous atmosphere and the night parade is exciting for the children,” he said. “A lot of children do not get to see Santa anywhere else especially if the Mall does not have appearances. Parents take the opportunity to make it a day or a weekend of Christmas shopping while children take in the free movie matinee. This year’s parade kick-off is at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 26. For further details contact the Yorkton Business Improvement office at 783-9243.

It’s a great display of toys, farm scenes, hot rods and antiques. There will be a wide variety of vendors on location as well. There will also be a pedal tractor raffle which tickets are only going to be sold at the show with all proceeds going to charity. Tourism Yorkton It may be winter, with all its snow and cold temperatures, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things for tourists to do in Yorkton. “Yorkton remains an active city even when the temperatures dip,” said Tourism Yorkton manager Randy Goulden. “There’s always something to do to enjoy even on the coldest of days.” So just what can visitors to Yorkton find to enjoy in the winter months? Goulden said it really depends what a person enjoys. “You can start by enjoying the varied cuisine available in the city,” she said. “We’ve always had fine restaurants, but in recent years we have seen greater diversity in menus which is reflective of the growing ethnic diversity in the city.” Goulden noted the arrival of two excellent sushi restaurants in recent years as examples of a changing restaurant culture. “Whether you’re looking for a good steak, great pub fare, pasta, or something a bit more adventurous like sushi, you will find it in Yorkton,” she said. And you will want a hearty meal so you are ready for the adventures ahead in the city. “The Yorkton branch of the Western Development Museum tells the story of immigration to Saskatchewan, and should be on every visitors ‘to-do’ list,” said Goulden. “The displays are great, and a video theatre really enhances the experience of learning about our province’s history.” The Yorkton WDM’s winter hours are; Aug. to Dec. 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. weekends, closed on statutory holidays. From January to March the hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. weekends and closed Mondays and statutory holidays. If art is more to your liking the Godfrey Dean Gallery is the place to visit. “The Gallery is really a gem for a city our size,” said Goulden. “Shows often highlight artists noted across Canada, but there is also a dedication to showcase local art. It’s a great balance which provides some extraordinary shows.” The Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Closed on Sundays and public holidays. The Gallagher Centre is also a place to check out on any visit to the city. “The Aquatic Centre is a tourist draw on its own,” said Goulden. “The water slide, wave pool and whirl pool are all favourites with swimmers.”
For more info please call (306) 786-1740 or email www. gallagherkiosk@yorkton.ca for hours of operation. The Gallagher Centre is also home to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s defending champion Yorkton Terriers and minor hockey teams across all age groups. “The curling rink hosts some great action over the winter too,” offered Goulden. And the Nexera Flexihall has a walking track for those wanting some exercise away from the snow, and often hosts trade shows and events. If you enjoy the outdoors in winter, Yorkton offers many options to get out with nature. “There is cross country skiing at Deer Park Golf Course, and families love Rodney Ridge as a place to toboggan,” said Goulden. The city is also the hub of an extensive snowmobile trail system which covers most of East Central Saskatchewan, and beyond. “Snowmobiling is a very popular winter activity, and the well-kept trail system extends right into the city so riders have access to services such as restaurants, fuel and lodging,” said Goulden. Then to end the day there is usually music and entertainment to be found in the city. “The Yorkton Arts Council’s Stars for Saskatchewan offers a pretty diverse group of concerts each season,” said Goulden. There are always other festivals and events going on in the city, most listed in this booklet, or on the Tourism Yorkton website at http://www.tourismyorkton.com/

The Gallagher Centre
The Gallagher Centre in Yorkton is a central gathering point for events throughout the fall and winter. When snow is blanketing the ground many look to the Gallagher Centre Water Park for a place to relax and have fun. The Water Park features a two-storey waterslide, a wave pool with zero depth beach entry, lazy river, hot tub, steam and sauna rooms and a 25-metre, five lane swimming pool. That means there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy. An exciting aquatic climbing wall, which boasts one and a half stories of intense climbing for all ages, is another popular feature at the water park. Either side of the wall represents a different difficulty level and when the panels get re-arranged there are new challenges to be faced. The wall offers hours of fun for those who climb to the top – then fall into the deep water. The wall is open to the public during leisure swim times. For those looking for something less physical there are the water options, including just relaxing in the hot tub and enjoying the warm water. And the water park has a range of admission fees to fit all budgets, with special rates for large groups and new, more affordable, monthly passes available, making it even more available for avid swimmers to visit. With monthly special events and extended leisure swim times on civic holidays it’s a great place to spend time with family on a visit to Yorkton or when just stopping through – all you need is a swim suit and a sense of adventure. Party packages including a private party room, food from our in-house concession and hours of fun in the pool are
also just a phone call away. More information can be obtained by calling 786-1740, email waterpark@yorkton.ca or by visiting our website www. gallaghercentre.com The Farrell Agencies Arena (FAA) is of course a focal point as the ice arena is the home of the Yorkton Figure Skating Club, Yorkton Terriers, Yorkton RawTec Maulers, and numerous minor hockey teams. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Terriers achieved league titles in 2013 and 2014, as well as winning the RCP Cup, emblematic of a Canadian Championship in 2014. Last season was not as successful so fans and visitors will be watching for resurgence this time around. The Terrier schedule can be found at www.yorktonterriers.com The FAA is Yorkton’s favorite ice arena for local recreational hockey groups and various private ice rentals. Public Skating is available at the Farrell Agencies Arena Sunday evenings, when no hockey games are scheduled. The FAA is also host to various large venue concerts and trade shows, and has hosted such events as Jonny Reid, Lord of the Dance, the Shriner’s Circus, and the SIGA Pow Wow. The FAA is able to accommodate events up to 2800 people. The Nexera Flexihall as a facility is most commonly used as a sports facility hosting track meets, walking track patrons, soccer and volleyball tournaments and tennis. The Nexera Flexihall is also a popular alternative for large functions such as grad, tradeshows, special events celebrations and concerts. The Nexera Flexihall is able to accommodate events up to 1200 people. Continued on Page 9

Tourism Yorkton When it comes to hosting an event, whether it’s a business meeting, a major convention, wedding, or sporting event, Yorkton has the facilities. “That’s one of the great things about a city like Yorkton, it’s small enough anyone coming into an event can find their way around easily, but we are large enough to have a full range of quality services,” said Tourism Yorkton Executive Director Randy Goulden. Goulden said it starts with accommodations and food. “Whether you need a room for a night, or to book 100 rooms for a convention Yorkton has a number of fine hotels and motels,” she said. “And our restaurants range from providing burgers on the go as you travel, to those offering fine dining. “There are of course private areas in some of the restaurants for small meetings as well.” When it comes to larger gatherings, that perfect wedding, or fraternal convention, Yorkton has the facilities for that too. The Painted Hand Casino, SIGN on Broadway, St. Gerard’s Parish Complex, St. Mary’s Cultural Centre, Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre and the City’s own Gallagher Centre all have spaces to accommodate gatherings from just a few intimate friends, to a high level business gathering, to provincial conventions.
“We’re fortunate in Yorkton to have such a range of facilities,” said Goulden. “It has allowed the city to be the site of events from the Parkland Expo and Sunflower Craft Show & Sale, the annual SUN convention and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation convention.” Should someone need a little help planning an event in the city Tourism Yorkton can help there as well. They have a Convention and Event Planning Guide and a Wedding Planning Guide on their website; www.tourismyorkton.com

Where good things happen
Stars for Saskatchewan
Each year the Yorkton Arts Council sponsors an array of exciting performances and this fall/winter season is no different. While in Yorkton treat yourself to first class entertainment by taking in one or all of the following performances; Jack Semple BB King Tribute Sunday, September 18, 2016 7:30 p.m. — “In my opinion BB King was the greatest electric blues guitarist of all time,” Semple exclaims. “His ability to communicate emotionally with the audience through his guitar was unparalleled. I met him in 1995 and unlike other superstars was humble, patient and empathetic — his generosity was overwhelming. I try to follow his lead. Over the years, Semple has built quite the reputation for himself in Canada. He has been nominated twice for a Gemini Award. In 1991, he won a Juno Award for Best Roots Recording. His albums “Qu’Appelle” and “In The Blue Light” have both won Western Canadian music awards with “In The Blue Light” winning Blues Album of the Year. His tribute to the great BB King is a labor of love! www. jacksemple.com FORTUNATE ONES Thursday, October 27, 2016 7:30 p.m. — After generating impressive momentum on his own, Newfoundland’s Andrew James O’Brien found the perfect accelerant to add to his musical fire in vocalist/ instrumentalist, Catherine Allan. Together, they are the Fortunate Ones. Andrew and Catherine’s earnest blend of acoustic folk/ pop and roots has been gaining them significant critical and popular praise. Bare-bones arrangements and delicate, quietly assured harmony, make their live shows so endearing and memorable. They perform with the openheartedness of two people that live the songs that they sing; the vulnerability and closeness between Andrew and Catherine is palpable on stage during each and every performance, in effect positioning the audience as the Fortunate Ones. http://fortunateones.ca/ THE LION, THE BEAR, THE FOX Sunday, November 13, 2016 7:30 p.m. — The Lion, The Bear, The Fox took over 30 years to find each other, but it only took 30 days for Christopher Arruda (lion), Cory Woodward (bear) and Ryan McMahon (fox) to realize they were meant to join their voices as one. The Lion, The Bear, The Fox demonstrate an uncompromising devotion to their chosen craft. A collection of intimate moments lived through audiences every night. Stompy blues, rock grooves and howling, unbridled passion can suddenly give way to hushed folk passages woven together by three whispers speaking as one. www. thelionthebearthefox.com
PRAIRIE DEBUT PRESENTS FLÛTE ALORS! Tuesday, January 24, 2017 7:30 p.m. — Dynamic and versatile, Flûte Alors! is composed of four new-generation recorder players. Since 1999, this award-winning ensemble has received acclaim and distinction for the audacity of their programs and the excellence of their performances. Flûte Alors! is the only professional recorder quartet in Canada. Inspired by the cultural diversity and contrasts seen from a bistro patio in Old Montréal, Bach’n Jazz is a program that is both serious and relaxed, sweet and sour, red and white. Flûte Alors! will offer masterpieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, paired with well-known and much loved jazz standards like A Night in Tunisia by Dizzy Gillespie. The ensemble also presents their own thrilling arrangements that push the technique of the recorder. http://www.prairiedebut.com/ ERIC HARPER Friday, February 10, 2017 7:30 p.m. — Award Winning Flamenco Guitarist Eric Harper creates not only a unique sound all his own but his music is melodically entrancing, virtuosically ferocious and harmonically soulstirring to the core. Eric Harper is an exotic fusion of Rock and Flamenco. Think Dave Matthews meets the Gypsy Kings. Not only can his hands move like lightning like the Gypsy Kings but his voice is smooth, velvety and invokes a strength that moves even the biggest music skeptic. Eric has four CDs that reflect his many styles: The Best of Eric Harper, A Very Timely Christmas, Rompera Madrugada and Ribeira. www.ericharpermusic.com REGINA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Wednesday, March 01, 2017 7:30 p.m. — The Regina Symphony Orchestra (RSO) presents RSO TOUR: Rediscover, Reimagine. For the first time ever, Music Director Gordon Gerrard along with a 24-member RSO chamber orchestra will tour and perform for southern Saskatchewan audiences. The concert features powerful classics and popular music with Maestro Gordon on piano and conducting. Come and experience the beginning of a new era with the RSO and explore chamber music like never before. www.reginasymphony.com CANADA’S BALLET JORGEN Saturday, March 11, 2017 7:30 p.m. — Bouffonia — an evening of contemporary and classical works. Canada’s Ballet Jörgen loves to share their creativity with Canadians in the communities in which they live. Creation of new ballets is at the heart of why Canada’s Ballet Jörgen was formed over 25 years ago. Since then we have supported the development of 196 new works by 78 choreographers. Bouffonia marked the return of acclaimed Canadian choreographer Robert Desrosiers in 2013 after Continued on Page 13

Known as one of the country’s most imaginative choreographers, his new work bears his unmistakable hallmark; the surreal spectacle is an exciting example of the special genre of dance-theatre Desrosiers established during his career. Bouffonia features fantastical sets, props and costumes and includes many acrobatic dance elements. http://www. balletjorgencanada.ca/ JAKES GIFT Saturday, April 29, 2017 7:30 p.m. — Jake’s Gift is a surprisingly funny drama that tells the story of a Canadian WW2 veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy, France, for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. While roaming the shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious tenyear-old from the local village whose inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long ignored ghosts — most notably, the wartime death of his eldest brother, Chester, a once promising young musician. At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave. Since 2007, Juno Productions has toured this multi-award winning play to over 200 communities across Canada including international stops in the US, UK and to Normandy, France, for the 70th Anniversary of D-Day www.jakesgift.com All shows take place at the Anne Portnuff Theatre, located at the Yorkton Regional High School. Snowarama
Snowmobile enthusiasts will converge on Yorkton on Feb. 11, 2017, to support a provincial charity event and celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Easter Seals Snowarama. Yorkton’s largest snowmobile event raises money for Easter Seals Saskatchewan. Deana Jesmer, Community Relations Coordinator with Saskatchewan Abilities Council in Yorkton noted, “$2 million dollars has been raised for children with disabilities in the province. Participants and riders travel from all of the prairie provinces and as far as B.C. to attend Snowarama and raise funds for children with disabilities. In 2017 we will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Snowarama!! We are so excited to reach this milestone and planning has begun to make this the biggest Snowarama yet!” The money goes to programs such as “Camp Easter Seal; a fully wheelchair accessible summer camp, Summer Fun Program; an urban day camp focused on recreational and leisure activities in the community for children with disabilities and Adaptive Technology Services; computers and technology are used to minimize the impact of having
a disability are the programs that are funded through fundraisers like Snowarama,” said Jesmer. Riders have their choice of two loops on beautifully groomed trails and receive complimentary meals, fuel for their sleds and a chance to win a brand new snowmobile. Yorkton’s “snowmobile friendly” trail system means you can access city amenities right from your sled. Jesmer said it is the participants who make the event a success. “The community involvement and continued support have made Snowarama the long term success that it is,” she said. “Many of the riders participated in the very first Snowarama and have great stories to share. “The Snowarama committee is also a dedicated group and many have been involved since the first event. And of course the group of dedicated riders that attend each year, regardless of the snow conditions, they raise funds and make a difference to children with disabilities.” Call 1-866-301-0031 for more information or online at www.snowarama.ca

Parkland Outdoor Show
The sixth anniversary edition of the Parkland Outdoor Show and Expo (POSE) is set for 2017. Over the last six years POSE has been become one of the premier outdoor events in Canada. The Parkland Outdoor show has been a “must see event” for the outdoor enthusiast. There is something to see for everyone who enjoys the outdoors. The event which launched in 2012, found immediate success because it highlights something many in the region are interested in. This year’s Parkland Outdoor Show and Expo will be held on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2, at the Gallagher Center and Yorkton Curling Rink. There is also a special “Kick-Off Party” Friday, March 31. The meet and greet gives exhibitors, speakers and the general public a chance to meet, network and share in a laid back setting. We are very happy to offer such an event,” said Darren Wandy, Parkland Outdoor Show and Expo President. “In addition to over 100 exhibitors at the show and expo, first class celebrity speakers, our demo areas, we also offer a 3-D archery shoot, live product demo area and a Banquet the Saturday evening of the event,” said Wandy. The Banquet is held Saturday, April 2, at St. Mary’s Cultural Center. Tickets will be on sale starting in December, which makes a great Christmas gift. Entry into the Outdoor Show and Expo is $10.00 at the door per day per person. With your paid entry you are entered in for a chance of some awesome door prizes. The Parkland Outdoor Show and Expo is a non-profit
organization. Money raised from the event goes to help raise money for youth archery and the hope of building a multi-purpose facility with the main focus being archery. Wandy states, “Our main focus is kids. To date The Parkland Outdoor Show and Expo has donated just shy of $100,000 to youth archery programs and related efforts.” Visit our website for speakers and speaker info and updated features that will be at our show. Harvest Showdown
The Grain Miller’s Harvest Showdown is back again this November, and with it new events and features await patrons. Over the years the event has become a showcase for the region, and has become a meeting place for agriculture, and YEA President Lori Walsh said that has been a key to the success of Harvest Showdown which runs Nov. 2 - 5 at the Gallagher Centre and Yorkton Exhibition Grounds. “When the Exhibition Association first came up with the idea of hosting a fall show, they wanted it to focus on agriculture, and that has remained the primary focus for the event each year,” said Walsh. We will once again host the Saskatchewan Grains Expo. The Grains Expo takes place on November 2nd and will highlight topics and trends relevant to today’s grain producer. From the beginning two events have been highly successful aspects of the show, the commercial cattle show and sale, and the commercial grain show, and both remain integral to Harvest Showdown. The commercial grain show, which includes an awards evening Thursday, is the only Grain Show remaining in western Canada. “We’ve always had a lot of support from farmers entering grain samples,” said Walsh. Walsh said the cattle shows held Thursday and Friday and the sale held Friday, reflect the fact there are a lot of very good cattle producers in the area, and they have been supportive of Harvest Showdown bringing their cattle year after year. “The cattle show and sale is as much about old friends getting together and talking the business of cattle as it is about winning a banner,” said Walsh. “It’s that atmosphere of meeting friends every fall that has helped the cattle show be so well-attended.” There will also be school tours sponsored by Mosaic. It is an opportunity for Yorkton and area students to get some hands-on education about the industry of agriculture. “We expect about a thousand students to attend,” said Walsh, adding the YEA has always thought education was an important aspect of its activities. This year’s show includes “Breed Alley”, which was re-introduced last year. The display will showcase the various breeds of cattle in our region by purebred producers. Mix in annual events such as the ranch rodeo and stock dog competitions, trade show, fiddling showcase, exotic animal sale, dual sanctioned Canadian Cowboy Association/
Manitoba Rodeo Cowboy Association which runs Friday and Saturday evenings, and the popular wind-up rodeo dance, and there really is something for everyone. This year two features of note will be a trick riding show, as well as mini chuckwagons racing the dirt floor of the Farrell Agencies Arena. “The focus might be agriculture, but Harvest Showdown really has become a place where country meets city, and vice versa,” said Walsh. “We just want to invite everyone to go a little country this year and help us celebrate successes in agriculture.” Daily gate admission is only $5 for adults. Walsh said the gate admission will grant access to everything involved with Harvest Showdown except the rodeo performances, rodeo dance and the Seniors Supper and Dance, all of which will require an additional ticket purchase. Located on Highway 16A West, the Western Development Museum celebrates the cultural roots of Western Canadian settlers. A glimpse of life over the past century is displayed within the ‘Winning The Prairie Gamble: The Saskatchewan Story’ centennial exhibit. Featured outdoors is an extensive line up of steam traction engines, gas tractors, plows and harvesting equipment. While many displays are permanent to the Museum, they do play host to travelling exhibits, including A Taste of Science Travelling Exhibition. Walking Opportunities There might be a blanket of snow on the ground, but that can enhance the experience of exploring the city via a walking tour. The city is connected to the country’s longest recreational trail — The Trans Canada Trail. A newly erected pavilion serves as a lasting landmark at Logan Green Park to mark the accomplishment and visitors are welcome to stop by to view the names of local area donors who helped make the trail possible. An 18,000-kilometre recreational corridor winding its way through every province and territory — the Trans Canada Trail links over 800 communities along its route. Walking is “… a really great way to see the area, to enjoy what we have to offer and to get some physical activity at the same time,” points out Randy Goulden, manager of Tourism Yorkton. But there are also options which focus on the rich culture of the city, including a walking tour of the city’s downtown area to view some of the historic sites, and another which highlights outdoor art. Visit www.tourismyorkton.com or stop by the Tourism office for additional walking trail opportunities.

Snowboard Hill
A new winter activity is being offered in Yorkton once the snow flies. By unanimous vote early in 2014 Yorkton Council gave its approval for a snowboard hill in the city on Rodney Ridge which is located on Roslyn Avenue. Darcy McLeod, Director of Community Development, Parks & Recreation, told Council at the time a hill for snowboarders has been a consideration for a while in the city. “Over the last number of years, Administration had discussions with community members about the development of a snowboard hill somewhere in the City,” he said. “In the fall of 2013, the discussion turned to Rodney Ridge as there is a natural slope that could be used on the north end of the Park. An inactive reservoir from the old water tower is located in this same spot so Environmental
Services was consulted. The result is that no equipment heavier than a bobcat would be permitted on the slope for maintenance and a snow fence or reflective markings will be required to separate an area where a valve for the reservoir still exists.” McLeod said the City would not be building a hill, but will instead work to enhance the natural topography. “A hill would not actually be built but rather snow will be shaped into a pile at the top of the slope to provide a better starting point for the snowboarders to get down the existing hill,” he said. The hill has been developed with local “boarder” input. The community members have designed features for the slope and will be responsible for all costs to build, install, maintain and remove the features. The hill becomes operational once sufficient snow has fallen.
Cross Country Skiing Yorkton is home to some fine cross country skiing. The Yorkton Cross Country Ski Club sets approximately 10 kms of trails at Deer Park. “The trails are set in both classic and skate style grooming,” said club spokesperson Anne Stupak. “We have volunteers that groom our trails on a regular basis or as needed. The trails vary from fairly level to rolling hills and wind along the tree line and spruce groves.” When events are held amenities are close at hand too. “We have access to the club house to host events and house our ski equipment,” said Stupak. And newcomers to the activity can get a little help as well. “The club does have sets of skis that we loan out to members and we will rent to non-members,” said Stupak. The trails are open and free for all to ski but membership is encouraged to help maintain the equipment and trails. The club meets on a weekly basis for night skiing, but other than special events most ski whenever they wish to. Stupak said some added events are being planned for the 2015/2016 season. “The Yorkton Cross Country Ski club has plans to host learn-to-ski days for both skate and classic style and waxing clinics,” she said. “Special family events like our annual skiing safari and ski for the gold poker derby are popular and new this year; we plan to host the Sundog Challenge to attract skiers that

Godfrey Dean Art Gallery The Godfrey Dean Art Gallery, is a small, intimate gallery where visitors can get up close to work ranging from local to national artists. Located on the corner of Smith Street and Third Avenue, and adjacent to the historic Land Titles Building, the Yorkton Gallery is comprised of two galleries which together total over 2,000 square feet of exhibit space. The GDG proudly represents contemporary artwork from local, regional and national artists. Exhibits change on roughly a monthly basis making repeated visits a must for regular travelers, especially with the free admission. The aim of the gallery is to offer as much variety in subject matter and various artistic mediums and styles as possible. Galley Director Don Stein said the Godfrey Dean has an inviting atmosphere visitors will enjoy, adding the first thing which comes to his mind “is how beautiful and welcoming it is. “Large windows surrounding the lobby keep it well lit, and the 2nd floor vantage point offers an expansive view of the streetscape, buildings and lots of trees.” “The two exhibition spaces themselves are also surprisingly spacious, with high ceilings and plenty of wall space.” The Yorkton region has a unique cultural blend. It is the responsibility of its public art gallery, The Godfrey Dean, to reflect the issues and concerns within this community. “Our local resources are what distinguishes the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery,” said Stein. “People want to see art that reflects the local community and environment in some way. The gallery has the unique ability to draw on local and regional artists and exhibit their work, which is often inspired by our area, and the people who inhabit it. Visitors, especially tourists, appreciate the opportunity to see artists whose work is readily available to us in Yorkton, but not in other locations. The Godfrey Dean is the only professional public gallery within a 150 km radius of Yorkton. To learn more or to obtain a current exhibition schedule visit: www.deangallery.ca or call 786-2992. QUIET STORIES FROM CANADIAN PLACES — Heather Cline January 16 to February 25, 2017 An exhibition to celebrate the Canada 150 anniversary! “How do we talk about history in small ways, as opposed to those big, flashy moments that we often talk about in Canadian history?” Regina’s Heather Cline set out to answer that question with her paint brushes. The collection of acrylic paintings includes everything from city streets, to farm fields, to northern lakes and rapids. Most paintings depict scenes, past and present, from across western Canada. The collection also includes sound: many of the paintings were inspired by interviews Cline conducted, and the audio will be part of the exhibit.
Kids Expo Whether you are a parent, grandparent, or young child, one of the events you will want to mark on the calendar is the annual Kids Expo. Now a familiar event in Yorkton, the 2017 edition of the Expo is scheduled for the weekend of March 18 and 19. Joelle Bohn, with Joey Children’s Apparel which presents the Expo said the event was started because she saw a growing local need for such a showcase. “What made me launch this event was that I wanted to give back to the community in a different way if possible,” she said. “I noticed while at a buying show in Edmonton that there was a Kids Expo going on at the same time there just in a different hall. I thought this same idea would work well in this city at the end of the wintery months when kids and parents feel trapped indoors and just need something to do.” And the event just seems to get bigger and bigger, although Bohn said they are now refocusing on what the event was initially meant to be. “The event has come a long way since we started last year I pushed it to the absolute max and this year we are going to go back down to the basics of things,” she said. “This year we want more activities for the kids and less of a trade show atmosphere. We have been lucky to partner with some great businesses over the years that have the same vision we do. So we are hoping things fall into place nicely this year.” Bohn said an event has to evolve, but it will keep doing what is popular with those attending too. In that regard she said the event attempts to have something for a range of youth. While the Expo is a fun outing in March where families can see a lot of great products, in terms of why people like the event Bohn said that they give back to the community resonates with people. “The key to its popularity I think is the giving back part of
the expo,” she said. “ For example, one year the funds were donated to Close Cuts for Cancer. “With that money they were able to buy CozyComfy Tees for all children in treatment in the province of Saskatchewan” said Bohn. “It also allowed us to buy trophies to hand to the kids for when treatment was finished for these kids. The stories we received from all over Saskatchewan of people thanking us was amazing. It was something so small but the Kids Expo allowed me to give back and I love doing that … In 2016, the money went to Seeds of Hope Orphanage. The orphanage is based in Africa but actually my cousin’s family runs in and they are from BC. “It has always been something really important to me and eventually I would love to go down there and help. But for now we are looking to send funds down there to help with whatever is needed,” said Bohn. The next Expo will of course offer a mix of popular booths from the past, and new offerings as well. “As for bigger and better I always try to bring new things in as I find like any show it gets stale if the same things are seen,” said Bohn. Bohn said local support has also made the Expo the success it is. “I think the support of the community has made it so successful without that we wouldn’t have a show at all,” she said. “Also my volunteers/family/friends who work the whole entire show with me make it that much more special for me, as the show wouldn’t run without these people. “I also think sponsors in the community have made this event well known, which has allowed for a much better event and much more money being able to be donated to a great cause.”
