Ravine Ecological Preserve Connecting with nature is as easy as exploring the Ravine Ecological Preserve in Yorkton. The Preserve offers a diverse 2.8 km hiking trail, which includes a floating boardwalk across the marsh, and then works its way through grassland, and aspen parkland habitat. Located just off Crescent Avenue and west of the Gallagher Centre, the park is designed to allow for people to connect with our natural world through an abundance of birds, plants and animals. The Ecological Preserve also holds its share of history, including the Dulmage farmstead. A farmer, inventor and entrepreneur Dulmage’s story is one of the points of interest on the walk, one of four mapped walking tours in the city.
Darcy McLeod noted all four tours offer many points of interest with visitors no doubt each having the favourites. “None of the Walking tour books highlight any particular place. However, those who take the Cemetery Walking Tour would be interested in the older monuments, those that stand out because of their size, prayer and message inscriptions, and old fashioned architecture,” he said. “Our tour book of the historic downtown has noted buildings which are designated as Municipal Heritage Properties. The attention is on the oldest buildings -- the old homes, and churches, the Court House and the old Land Titles Office of the ‘Promise & Potential’ tour which all hold an individual specific interest.”

Godfrey Dean Art Gallery
The Godfrey Dean Art Gallery, is a small, intimate gallery were visitors can get up close to work ranging for local to national artists. Located on the corner of Smith Street and Third Avenue, and adjacent to the historic Land Titles Building, the Yorkton Gallery is comprised of two galleries which together total over 2,000 square feet of exhibit space. The GDG proudly represents contemporary artwork from local, regional and national artists. Exhibits change on roughly a monthly basis making repeated visits a must for regular travelers, especially with the free admission. The aim of the gallery is to offer as much variety in subject matter and various artistic mediums and styles as possible. Galley Director Don Stein said the Godfrey Dean has an inviting atmosphere visitors will enjoy, adding the first thing which comes to his mind “is how beautiful and welcoming it is. “Large windows surrounding the lobby keep it well lit, and the 2nd floor vantage point offers an expansive view of the streetscape, buildings and lots of trees.” “The two exhibition spaces themselves are also surprisingly spacious, with high ceilings and plenty of wall space.” The Yorkton region has a unique cultural blend. It is the responsibility of its public art gallery, The Godfrey Dean, to reflect the issues and concerns within this community. “Our local resources are what distinguishes the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery,” said Stein. “People want to see art that reflects the local community and environment in some way. The gallery has the unique ability to draw on local and regional artists and exhibit their work, which is often inspired by our area, and the people who inhabit it. Visitors, especially tourists, appreciate the opportunity to see artists whose work is readily available to us in Yorkton, but not in other locations. The Godfrey Dean is the only professional public gallery within a 150 km radius of Yorkton. To learn more or to obtain a current exhibition schedule visit: www.deangallery.ca or call 786-2992. A dozen other galleries are taking part, with all of the new work being featured around the province in July and August. The gallery has collected images from many different photographers, including before, during and after the demolition of the last remaining elevator and warehouse structures. Down By The Old Mill Stream features a series of paintings by local artist Jeann Spilak, from historic photos. Walking trails
While Yorkton has some excellent walking tours, there is also a growing network of pathways simply to enjoy by walking, biking or inline skating. “The City of Yorkton pathways provide people an opportunity to go for a walk, bike or roll in a place where they don’t have compete for space with cars,” said Darcy McLeod, director Community Development, Parks & Recreation Department with the City of Yorkton. “They also support no cost or low cost activity as there is no special equipment requirement, fees or schedule to restrict someone from being active and getting out in nature.” Yorkton Mayor Bob Maloney said the City has been dedicated to creating pathways with there being some 5.5 kilometres of paved or graveled pathways in place, and another kilometer planned for development this year.
The goal is to create an overall network which will connect local residents, and also create another feature which can be enjoyed by tourists and visitors. Maloney said the younger generation are looking for opportunities to get outside with the family and the pathways are one example of that. “And it’s free,” said the city’s Mayor. “It’s a great way to get out and get some exercise.” Randy Goulden, manager with Tourism Yorkton said increasingly people on holidays want to stay active. “Our pathways are a great way to take a look around our city passing through some beautiful park and natural areas,” she said, adding people can go out for a good run, or leisurely walk, as it suits them.

WMBL Cardinals
Summer means baseball and in Yorkton that means a trip to Jubilee Park to take in some Western Major Baseball League action with the Yorkton Cardinals! The WMBL is a Summer Collegiate League made up of some of the best College prospects in Canada and the USA. The Cardinals are coming off a challenging season but are looking to rebound in 2018 to the form of the 2016 version. Besides some major injuries the Cardinals also lost two key players who signed Professional Baseball Contracts and had left by mid-June. Local pitcher, Kody Rock of Canora, Saskatchewan signed with the Milwaukee Brewers and Outfielder Dondrei Hubbard of Houston, Texas signed a contract to play with the Melbourne Aces of the Australian Baseball League. A further testament of the calibre of play in the WMBL are Cardinal alumni, Andrelton Simmons, All-Star Shortstop and Gold Glove winner with the Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giant pitcher Dan Runzler. There are numerous others who have played WMBL baseball then turned that experience into a baseball career including John Axford who played with Melville. The 12 team WMBL with six teams in Saskatchewan and six in Alberta play a 48 game schedule from the end of May until the end of July. This is followed by Eastern and Western Conference playoffs culminating in a best of 5 series between the two Conference winners to decide a League Champion. Players are recruited from Colleges and Universities from across Canada and the USA and each team is allowed up to 20 imports on their 27 man rosters. This leaves plenty of opportunity for local and Canadian standout players to develop their skills! Two new coaches will wear the Cardinal uniform this season, John Farrington of Eugene, Oregon is the Head Coach and Brady Hohl of Omaha, Nebraska, a former standout and League Champion with Swift Current will be the Assistant Coach. Be sure to check out some of the best baseball available on the Prairies at Jubilee Park in Yorkton this season! All home games have a 7:05 start time with a couple of exceptions, the Wednesday, June 6th game vs Melville has a 11:05 AM start time to accommodate students from across the region. All students are invited to attend this game with Free Admission sponsored by the Yorkton Coop. Also all Sunday home games have 2:05 start times. For more information checkout our web site at www.yorktoncardinalsbaseball.com or visit our Twitter or Facebook pages.
St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church is home to one of the finest paintings of its kind in North America. Located on the inside of dome of the church, art critics have likened it to the great religious paintings in Europe. Covering the entire dome 55-feet above the floor, the amazing work of art has a curvature of more than 62-feet. The painting was created in 1939 by Stephen Meush and depicts 157 angels of different sizes surrounding the throne of God. Visitors are welcome to the church, located at 155 Catherine Street but phone calls in advance are appreciated. Call the church at 783-4594.

Yorkton Film Festival Lovers of film need to plan a visit to the annual Yorkton Film Festival, held every May; the longest running film festival in North America. Each year the Festival works hard to offer a variety of programs and workshops to help filmmakers hone their craft. The first day of the Festival focuses on student filmmakers, with a half-day program at Sacred Heart High School. “Students filmmakers are so enthusiastic and we feel it is important to feed that enthusiasm,” said YFF director Randy Goulden. “We have many talented professionals attending the Festival and having them willing to work with students for the day is a great learning experience for both.” “Like the Festival itself has, we recognize the industry is constantly changing,” said Goulden. “We hope our programs help filmmakers take those changes in stride so they can continue to do what they do best, make great Canadian programming.” For the public, there are film screenings throughout the Festival at the Gallagher Centre. For more information on the annual festival visit: yorktonfilm.com This year, the film “Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World” will be featured at the Painted Hand Casino in the Parkland Room, Thursday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m. Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked The World tells the story of a profound, essential, and, until now, missing chapter in the history of American music: the Indigenous influence. Featuring music icons Charley Patton, Mildred Bailey, Link Wray, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Jimi Hendrix, Jesse Ed Davis, Robbie Robertson, Redbone, Randy Castillo, and Taboo, Rumble shows how these talented Native Musicians helped shape the soundtracks of our lives. The YFF is thrilled to be bringing this film to their audience this year. YFF will also be highlighting three made in Saskatchewan documentary films at this year’s Opening Night Screening. Produced under the National Film Board of Canada’s Doc. Lab project, YFF will feature Talking at Night, To Wake Up the Nakota Language, and Ride. Talking At Night - The tiny office of Saskatoon’s Mobile Crisis Unit provides 24-hour crisis resolution to people in distress. Sound and observational documentary collide in this portrait of a critically needed, but often overlooked, service in the city’s centre. To Wake Up the Nakota Language - There are only a handful of Nakota speakers left in Saskatchewan. Armand McArthur is the last fluent Nakota speaker in Pheasant Rump First Nation, and is working to teach Nakota to the community and preserve it for generations to come. Ride - Like most teenagers, Liam Marshall goes to school, plays sports, updates his social media. On the weekends, he steps into another world, competing in high school and amateur rodeo circuits as a bareback rider. As for the coveted Golden Sheaf Awards, they have been garnered by the likes of Cordell Barker, who was twice nominated for Oscars, and Frederic Bach, who went on to capture two Oscars for his work. “It’s great to have the recognizable stars come to the Festival, but the event is just as much about the cameramen and producers working hard behind the camera to create the films,” said Goulden. “They are the ones we really come together to honour with the Golden Sheaf Awards.” The Golden Sheaf Awards Gala, presented by Painted Hand Casino is the highlight of the Festival, as the coveted awards are presented in a range of categories. “The Golden Sheaf Awards presented over the years sit prominently on a lot of mantelpieces and desks across this country, and we look forward each year to seeing what films and filmmakers our hard working jury have selected,” said Goulden. Where good things happen
Continued from Page 9 Over the years, many stars have visited the Festival. In fact, the festival has been visited by some very interesting Canadians - Bruno Gerussi, Gordon Pinsent, Barry Morse to name a few, which is all part of the Festival’s proud history. It was in October, 1950, that the projector first “whirred into action, the screen lit up and the sights and sounds of life filled the stillness of city hall,” details the Festival’s history on its website. “So it was that the first Yorkton International Documentary Film Festival became a reality.” Randy Goulden, executive director with the YFF, said it is a long, and proud history of film that they celebrate each year. “Canada has a proud film tradition, and we are equally proud to celebrate the industry’s best each year,” she said. The website again details the early history of the event. “The festival was the brain-child of James Lysyshyn, oft-times referred to in the years to follow as the “father of the Yorkton International Documentary Film Festival”. Lysyshyn was a young National Film Board field officer at the time. He had been stationed in Saskatchewan with a mandate to set up film councils in his area of jurisdiction, which after a time came to include Yorkton. Hearing about an arts festival being held in Europe, as well as music and science festivals in other parts of Canada, he came up with the idea for a film festival. At the
time Yorkton had a very active film council organized by Dave Sharples, who had been a wartime projectionist. Lysyshyn then decided to pitch his idea to them. “The first meeting with the council met with little success. The council members felt there were not enough new films being produced in Canada. Lysyshyn didn’t take no for an answer. He requested a meeting with the council the next month and touted his new idea for an international documentary film festival. The council liked the idea and the Yorkton International Documentary Film Festival was born. It was decided to hold the festival in two years due to the time involved in soliciting entries from foreign countries.” Entries for the first festival, in 1950, came from India, Brazil, Denmark, Australia, Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, and Britain. Canada had many entries, including five from Saskatchewan. “The Royal Winter Fair by the National Film Board was selected by the audience as the winning film at that first festival. Second and third place went to entries from India and the United States.” Goulden said over the years the Festival has evolved. “It was initially an international event, but over the years came to focus only on the best of Canadian film. Today the festival still looks to honour the best from filmmakers in our country, with special attention being paid to young and emerging filmmakers because they are the future of the industry.”
Weinmaster Park An amenity many tourists will appreciate in Yorkton is a wheelchair accessible play structure. The structure is at Weinmaster Park (just off Morrison Drive, in northeast Yorkton). In 2010, the Weinmaster Accessible Play Structure Committee was formed following a needs assessment completed by the City of Yorkton and the Sunrise Health Region. This volunteer committee raised awareness of the need, and raised funds, to replace the old play structure in the park with a wheelchair accessible play structure. Having an accessible play structure is good for the community, was something the municipality was quick to support once there was local resident involvement All children need to play as it is essential for their physical, social and emotional wellbeing. An important aspect of playground design today is making sure all kids have access

to play. Accessible play spaces are designed to encourage shared play among children of all physical abilities. A universally accessible playground is a play environment created to be wheelchair accessible throughout the entire structure and surrounding play area with more challenging paths of travel or activities along or beside the wheelchair accessible routes. The accessible play structures also allow parents and caregivers to be nearby and play with their children. As part of the 2013 budget, Council approved the Weinmaster Park accessible play structure committing $250,000 towards this project. In addition the Weinmaster Accessible Play Structure Committee has successfully secured an additional $54,769.31 in fundraising for a total project amount of $304,769.31.

Disc Golf
Disc golf has become a popular sport and recreation around the world, and interest locally is expanding rapidly with Yorkton the hub of the activity regionally. In Yorkton, Patrick Park Disc Golf Course is the venue to experience the sport, located off King Street. Opened in June 2011, the nine basket course has proved a challenge for experienced disc golfers with trees to manoeuvre through from almost every tee box, and yet forgiving for beginners since the course does not have hazards where discs can be lost. The original nine at Patrick Park is a par-27 and covers 2379-feet. The experience was expanded in 2015, through an initiative spear-headed by local players, and supported by the City, to install a set of nine alternate tee boxes, which afford players an opportunity to play a ‘back-nine’ with new approaches to the existing baskets. The ‘back-nine’ is a par-33 and extends the course by 3037feet, by utilizing some new disc golf features, in particular several mandatories, specific features a player’s disc must pass around in a particular direction — left-or-right of the marked feature. To promote the growth of the sport players are encouraged to come out Tuesday evenings from May through until September. It is a night for players of all skill levels, with more experience players more than happy to help beginners get a feel for the sport. For those with a competitive edge Yorkton’s Third Annual Trilogy Challenge, this year sponsored by Grain Millers, will be held Sunday, Aug. 26. Those travelling for the event will want to make it a weekend with the Cornerstone Credit Union Cup being held in nearby Springside, Saturday, Aug. 25. Both tournaments are part of the Parkland Association of Disc Golf (PADG) summer series. To further promote the sport not only locally, but regionally, disc golf supporters met in Yorkton in late 2015, to lay the framework to create the PADG. The PADG has a very simple Mission Statement: To promote the sport and recreational benefits of disc golf across the Parkland Region. That said the new Association does represent a growing number of courses — all within an easy 125 km radius drive of Yorkton. As the snow melted in the spring of 2015 there were only three courses is that area, Benito, MB, Kemoca Regional Park at Montmartre and Patrick Park in the city. There are currently more than 20- courses in the PADG,

with new courses being discussed for 2018. And now this year those planned courses are moving forward. “There has been amazing interest from communities across the region the last three years, and we fully expect continued growth in players and over the longer term additional courses coming on stream,” said PADG president Calvin Daniels. To help promote disc golf and the growing number of courses the PADG created its tournament series. “These events are going to be very beginner player friendly, but participants will earn points toward year-end recognition,” said PADG tournament chair Trevor Lyons. Lyons explained that it is hoped each course in the PADG will host one event as part of the series. 2018 PADG Tournament dates: May Sunday 13 -- Katepwa Sunday 20 – Fort Qu’Appelle Sunday 27 – Melville (The Rock) June Saturday 2 – Saltcoats (tentative) Sunday 3 – Bredenbury Sunday 10 – Wadena Saturday 23 – Kelvington (Potluck Chuck) Sunday 24 – Stockholm (Big Sky Realty) July Sat/Sun 14/15 – Asessippi Sunday 22 – Carlton Trail (Big Sky Realty) Sunday 29 – Good Spirit (Howland Honey) August Sunday 5 – Sandy Beach Sunday 19 – Whitesand (Yorkton Co-op) (tentative) Saturday 25 – Springside (Credit Union Cup) Sunday 26 – Yorkton (Grain Millers) September Sept 2 – Labour Day Sept 9 – Kamsack (tentative) Sunday 23 – Rocanville (CDI) October Sunday 7 – Last Chance Tourney Sunday 14 – Champions Challenge (Open Farrell Agencies/ Women’s Big Sky Realty) Continued on Page 22

Where good things happen
Continued from Page 20 For more information on any tournament email padg. yorkton@gmail.com And, more events will be announced as the season continues. For those unfamiliar with the sport disc golf it “is a flying disc game, as well as a precision and accuracy sport, in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, “The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest number of throws of the disc. The number of disc golf courses doubled in the eight years from 2000 to 2008. The game is played in about 40 countries around the world.” Interestingly, according to one source, “the first known instance of anyone playing golf with a flying disc occurred in Bladworth, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1926. Ronald Gibson and a group of his Bladworth Elementary School buddies played a game throwing tin plates at targets such as trees and fence posts. They called the game Tin Lid Golf and played on a fairly regular basis on a disc golf course they laid out on their school grounds. But, after they grew older and went their separate ways, the game came to an end.”
“Modern disc golf started in the early 1960s, when it seems to have been invented in many places and by many people independently. Students at Rice University in Houston, Texas, for example, held tournaments with trees as targets as early as 1963 and in the early 1960s players in Pendleton King Park in Augusta, Georgia would toss Frisbees in 50-gallon barrel trash cans designated as targets.” The golf discs used today are much smaller and heavier than traditional flying discs, typically about eight or 9 inches (20 or 23 cm) in diameter and weighing between 90 and 180 grams. Discs used for disc golf are designed and shaped for control, speed, and accuracy. There is a wide variety of discs used in disc golf and they are generally divided into three categories: putters, allpurpose mid-range discs, and drivers. For those wanting to try the game, discs can be picked up at the City’s Parks Shop at 263 Myrtle Avenue during regular business hours. To stay connected with disc golf head to Facebook, search Disc Golf Courses of the Parkland and join other enthusiasts, or at http://dulok44.wixsite.com/parklanddiscgolf
Logan Green fish pond Want a leisurely time tossing a few hooks in the hopes of enticing a trout to take a bite, then head over to the Logan Green Fish Pond in Yorkton. The area has been developed as a fish pond, in cooperation with the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation as it fits with the organization’s mandate “to create new fisheries in urban areas.” The initial step was to determine the feasibility of stocking the pond and man-made steam work undertaken by the Fisheries Project Coordinator of the SWF. Once it was determined that fish would likely be viable they had to develop suitable habitat. The habitat development included riffles in the stream, areas of stone which create pool areas, and help aerate water as it passes over the riffle area. There was also vegetation started along the water way to create a complete habitat. The City of Yorkton along with Yorkton and Saskatchewan Wildlife Federations, and the Assiniboine Watershed Stewardship Association stocked the pond in the spring of 2014. Rainbow Trout were the fish of choice. The fish grew well over the first summer, and were being
caught off flies by fall, and they over-wintered meaning bigger fish lurk in the pond now. The pond is catch and release, with signage on-site detailing specific rules. The project is having benefits beyond local fishing, with the potential to develop educational programs for the public, but particularly for students.

View on Restaurants When you travel for holidays you will want to eat. “When people stop at the tourist information office they regularly ask about what are the good restaurants in the city,” said Tourism Yorkton manager Randy Goulden. “It can start a rather long conversation because we have a lot of good places to dine in the city.” Goulden said in general tourists are seeking two distinct eating options when looking for a restaurant. “We have those people who are just passing through, those headed to one of our nearby lakes for the weekend, or go on to another community to visit, and those people want something quick, often something they can eat while on the road,” she said. That means restaurants which offer take-out are popular. “When people are travelling they often want a drive through restaurant,” said Goulden, but added in that people can be quite specific too. “When you are driving a large camper unit, maybe pulling a big boat too, you need lots of room at a drive through, or at least a handy place to park nearby,” she said. Then there are travellers who want more of a dining experience. “Food can be such a memorable part of a holiday,” said Goulden. “Anytime you sit down with good friends over a Fine Dining Manos 277 Broadway St. E. good meal you are likely to create lasting memories and that is what people want while on their holidays.” People are looking for several things when it comes to fine dining. The first thing is good food, but it does go farther than that, said Goulden. “People want something different, and people want a nice atmosphere in the restaurant, someplace that is relaxing, and welcoming so you enjoy the experience for more than the food.” There are also a growing segment of the population that seeks out restaurants which cater to specific dietary requirements. “People are certainly health conscious these days, and very aware of what their bodies need in terms of food,” said Goulden. “We get people who ask about restaurants that list ingredients because they may have a severe allergy to something like nuts. “In other cases people seek gluten free foods, or want vegetarian meals.” Goulden said because of the diverse needs of travellers, Yorkton is fortunate to be large enough to have a diverse restaurant industry. “We have something that should suit everyone,” said Goulden, adding they are always happy to answer specific question when tourists stop in. The Yorkton Exhibition The Yorkton Exhibition Association has been a part of the community for over 135 years and continues to engage the public through its agricultural and entertainment events! The Summer Fair runs July 4-7 and is once again geared up to be fun for all ages with the return of family favorites such as the West Coast Amusements midway and J & S Petting Zoo. Also returning is the Old Country Lads, Goat Yoga, Demo Derby & Combine Crunch as well as the very popular “Yorkton’s Got Talent” and GX 94 Star Search. The ECPCCA Chuckwagon and Chariot races are also back for three days of fast-paced action! For the kids, we have Freddy Fusion’s Magic Bean and Science Show. The Princes and Princesses will be appearing again and holding their annual Dance Party. Don’t forget the Opening Ceremonies and Seniors’ Tea on Wednesday, the Kiddies Parade Thursday and the Exhibition Parade Saturday. New this year is the exciting and thrilling Global FMX freestyle motocross show which is a family friendly high energy show that is able to impress a wide variety of spectators. Also, Milord Entertainment’s high dive act “The Flying Fools” is a high performance show consisting of many dynamic dives. The acrobatic divers jump from heights of three, six, 9 and 25 meters with so much skill that it leaves you breathless, especially since the pool is only 8 meters in diameter and only three meters deep. We also have the Tim Burr! Circus Lumberjack Show which is a highly interactive comedy stunt show with a Canadian Lumberjack theme. Also new is the Canadian Raptor Free Flying Live Birds of Prey Show. This exciting show will highlight live up close and personal birds of prey such as the Great Horned Owl, hawks, eagles, vultures and falcons just to name a few. This educational and exciting show is sure to be a favorite for all ages! On the grandstand we are very pleased to announce Juno nominees The Dead South on Friday night which have been described as outlaws and modern hillbillies, but the best way to describe the Regina-based band is fearless. They’re a rare musical commodity – a band with a signature blend of bluegrass and classic folk is familiar, it’s also eminently fresh; fuelled by the kind of energy and ethic you’d associate with a punk band. Saturday’s headliner is Juno Award Winners the Hunter Brothers! The five brothers from Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, grew up singing gospel with their family across Canada and the U.S., working on the family farm and playing hockey for the likes of the Kelowna Rockets to Edmonton Oilers. Some of their hits include “El Dorado”, “Long Way to Love You” and “Those Were the Nights”. Of course the Fair would not be complete without the trade show located on the grounds and in the curling rink as
well as the food concessions, so make sure to come hungry and indulge! Don’t forget to check out the Light Horse Show and 4-H Regional Show and Sale – two great events which showcase local and area agriculture. Finally wrapping up a jam packed four days on the grandstand Saturday night; are the Fireworks Spectacular! There is definitely something for everyone at the 2018 Yorkton Exhibition Summer Fair! The Yorkton Exhibition is also very pleased to host the 2018 Yorkton Hyundai Thunder in the Parkland Truck and Tractor Pulls. All the action takes place August 17th & 18th at the Yorkton Exhibition grounds and grandstand. Trucks and tractors will take to the track both Friday and Saturday evenings and will feature mod trucks and tractors, vintage pullers, mini mods and more. There will also be an opportunity to take a ride on the Rabbit Rabid, a one of a kind monster truck! Planning is also underway for the Annual Grain Millers Harvest Showdown which will be held November 7 – 10th. Once again we will be showcasing the commercial grain and forage show, commercial cattle show and sale, exotic animal sale, ag-education school tours and displays, horse pulls, chore team, trade show and much, much more!! For more information check out the Yorkton Exhibition Facebook page or go to yorktonexhibition.com.

Birding Opportunities Birdwatching is a favoured activity of many on vacation, and the Yorkton area is a wonderful spot with many excellent locations to discover. For those wanting to search out local species the Tourism Yorkton Centre has copies of ‘Gone to the Birds’ a special information sheet showcasing all of the birding opportunities in the area. The brochure includes everything from viewing tips, to details on where to look for the wildlife you are interested in. Eleven spectacular birding opportunities are highlighted and waiting to be discovered. June 5, 2003 marked the inception of the YFBTA which works to promote awareness of the importance of preserving and protecting spaces for wildlife to exist. YFBTA works to promote these spaces and to facilitate tourism. “Birds are symbolic of nature. Migration is an incredible feat and it is, to say the very least, remarkable that they can travel incredible distances in volatile weather to arrive each spring. Many of the birds are sporting wonderful plumage in spring,” said Rob Wilson with the Yellowhead Flyway
Geocaching If you like a good mystery and you want to go on a grand adventure, then geocaching might be just what you need to try. In recent years the hobby of geocaching has been growing, and with that growth the opportunity to enjoy the activity while traveling. Geocaching uses global positioning technology to help with what is essentially a modern take on a treasure hunt. It’s a case where other people hide things all over the place (outdoors generally), and then other people go out and find them using the GPS coordinates. There are specialized GPS tracking units which can be used; Magellan and Garmin two of the best-known, but cellphones work too using various apps for iPhone and Android which link directly to the geocaching site. The coordinates to the hidden spots are posted at www. geocaching.com, an Internet site which acts as a hub for sharing information with geocachers around the world. The site has thousands of caches to seek out around the world. There are some 40 in Yorkton and 500 in Regina as examples, and is free to sign up for. Some caches are active year-round. Others, especially on the Canadian Prairies are hidden only through the warmer months. In some cases there are connections to history with many caches related to old school yards, cemeteries and similar locations. Often information of the locales is included on the geocaching site. While geocaching seems to be pretty widely based, there are some rules. Caches are not supposed to be buried underground making access too hard, as an example. Cachers also rarely post pictures of where a cache is located for fear it will make it easier to the next searcher to find. After that it is pretty wide open. One international cache was actually a building, while the smallest are the size of the fingernail on your little finger. Since the sizes vary, and caches are hidden, GPS gets you only so far. So when you’re within 10-metres you start looking.
Birding Trail Association (YFBTA), who added there is a near inherent interest most of us have in birds, and the local area is a good place to feed that interest. Throughout the summer, excursions in nature are organized by association members. For details or to be a part of the outings check the website at www.yfbta.com or find us on Facebook, Yellowhead Flyway Birding. The area of the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trails Association extends from the Manitoba border west to Highway 9. The southern part of the area begins with the Qu’Apelle Valley and its northern boundary lies north of Highway 10. There are currently five birding trails within the YFBTA region: The Carlton Trail Regional Park, Cherrydale Golf Course and Nature Preserve, Kaposvar Trail, Leflay Trail and Slough View Park. “I think our birding group attracts members because many people although not able to be active or choosing not be active are nonetheless interested in being supportive of the advocacy. I believe that most people feel a sense of responsibility to ensuring that enough spaces and places are preserved facilitate the stopping, resting, feeding and sheltering that are an essential component of the migration process that birds attempt twice each year,” offered Wilson. The YFBTA is affiliated with Nature Saskatchewan which publishes ‘Nature Views’ and ‘The Blue Jay’.

Walking Tours
Taking a leisurely walk and taking in the history of the city is easy in Yorkton thanks to four walking tours. It’s a way to “connect you to the past,” said Darcy McLeod, Director of Community Development, Parks & Recreation with the City, adding they familiarize visitors “with some of the history of Yorkton”. “One can observe details at close range, otherwise missed as you quickly walk or drive. “Walking with a tour book in hand, makes you an ‘acceptable snoop’. Walking with a group — and people can organize their own group — makes it also more ‘socially acceptable’ to stop and admire, for example the gargoyles of the old Hudson’s Bay store building.” Walking Tours allow you to do this exercise at your own pace,” said McLeod. Visitors like the tours as a way to get to know the city better. There are actually two written “Heritage Walking Tours” for downtown Yorkton: “Promise and Potential - Yorkton in the Early 1900’s” and “Pioneers Ways and Bygone Days”. The Heritage Walking Tour is the “Promise and Potential” tour which includes private homes and public buildings. That booklet is also available from City Hall at no cost. “Pioneer Ways and Bygone Days” is a close-up of the old town centre of Yorkton and is available for $10.00 at City Hall, Western Development Museum, Tourism Yorkton and Frameworks. Heritage Walking Tour Often the history of a community can only be found in dusty books and by looking at faded photos. But the history of Yorkton is alive and well in the form of a self-guided walking tour. The tour begins at the Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre on Smith Street and ends at 29 Myrtle Avenue. If you proceed at a leisurely pace, the walk will take about an hour and a half. For a brochure on the tour, contact Tourism Yorkton by calling 783-8707. The City also has a video walking tour — “Broadway and Back” — which can be taken on your smartphone. There is more information about it at this link: http://www.yorkton.ca/history/ and the City will be placing a link directly to the tour under “Quick Links” on its homepage.
City Cemetery Walking Tour A self-guided walking tour of the City of Yorkton Cemetery gives visitors a chance to experience the unique history of the area. It guides visitors along the pathways of this beautifully treed 10.5 acres, a book containing 28 sites has been prepared and can be purchased for $3. The complete tour will take about one hour and a half, but can be shortened. Stroll at your leisure, as you follow the trail outlines on the book’s map. There are benches at various locations in the cemetery where a visitor can rest. On the tour you will meet many of the early pioneers, and some of the more contemporary figures of Yorkton and area; all interesting and colourful personalities. In the process, much of the region’s history will be revealed. Yorkton’s Public Art Walking Tour Enjoy exploring Yorkton! You’re invited to follow a special guide through downtown parks and around historic sites. In public places and hidden spaces you will find Yorkton is a city filled with art. This guide will also lead you to special exhibition spaces where unexpected treasures await you each time you visit. To obtain your guide and/or further details, contact Tourism Yorkton at 783-8707. For the Yorkton Public Art tour, there is also an interactive map http://www.deangallery.ca/yorktonpublicart/ Additional information on our website at http://www. yorkton.ca/history/booksavailable/

Motocross Racing Few sport events are any more thrilling than motocross. In Yorkton that means a trip to the Millstone Park Raceway which has been operated by the Yorkton Motorcycle Club for the past 22 years. Named the 2008 Motocross Track of the Year, the raceway is located two km north of Yorkton on the #9 Highway next to Millstone Park, the original site of Yorkton. The track is open daily to club members to sharpen racing and off-road handling skills. Daily and yearly riding passes are available for non-members Monday to Saturday at Schrader Motors during normal business hours. Parental accompaniment is required for riders under 18 years of age. A kiddies’ or beginner track is available for beginning riders. As well, the club offers a riding school for novice riders, dates to be announced. “One of the very unique things about motocross is that racers of all ages, genders and abilities complete on the same day on the same track,” said local sport spokesperson Rick Bradshaw. “Although there are a number of different classes to group riders by ability and ages, there are very few if any sports where an entire family compete on the same day. New spectators are often surprised by the ability of a rider only to discover they are a 12-year-old girl then watch as two 50-year-old men bang bars and battle back and forth with
the stamina of men half their ages. Watching a couple of the top professional racers in the country battle for a win then congratulate each other after 20-minutes of competition shows the sportsmanship that motocross racers have.” And fans will love the track too to enjoy the high-flying action, spinning rubber and flying dirt associated with the sport. “Yorkton’s Millstone Raceway facility is great for spectator access as they can walk around the fenced inside of over half of the race track and see the action from a variety of viewpoints,” said Bradshaw. “With the area being located next to the highway access is great. Plus, the club always does one of the best race preparation jobs in the province so the track is well watered and groomed for awesome race action.” “Motocross is a very exciting sport. The start of a race can have up to 40 racers on the line together heading in the first turn. New spectators love the high jumps and bumps. All enthusiasts enjoy the close racing action and many come to realize the great skill it takes to make a lap let alone multiple laps at racing speed. This year the track will host a CMRC Provincial Championship race Sunday, July 29. For more information about the track or the motocross race call Rick Bradshaw at 621-4341, or Rick Dawson at 621-1426.
Prairie Thunder Drags The smell of burning rubber and the sound of raw horsepower can be enjoyed at the Kambusters annual Prairie Thunder 1/8 mile drag races, cruise night and car show. Everything can be seen during the weekend from pampered street cars, to full blown dragster motorcycles – ready to race. The Yorkton event is now in its 15th year. This year we are going back to a grassroots style race. We have more cars and the cars are a lot faster now. We have a reputation of having one of the best tracks for traction, so this brings out more powerful cars. We also have a larger number of spectators and a couple of feature cars that will run exhibition runs. People can come out to see these cars run and they don’t have to travel very far. Drag racing is becoming more popular all around. Everybody likes to see some smoke and hear the noise. Our events are bracket or handicapped racing but this year we are having a heads up street racing class. A bracket drag race is a straight-line acceleration contest between two

cars usually starting at different times from a standing start over a specified distance, usually a quarter-mile or an eighthmile. When two cars are matched up for a race, the dial-ins are compared. The slower car is given a handicap or head start to equal the difference between the dial-ins. To win you need to run as closer to your dial-in than the other car, but you cannot go faster than the dial-in time or that is considered a breakout and you lose. There will be a test and tune on May 19th, 2018. On August 11th, 2018 will be NHRA and IHRA competition featuring many local racers from around the parkland area, and August 12th, 2018 join us for the 64 Car Jackpot Race with option of one buy back in. Call outs after 2nd or 3rd elimination rounds. For additional information call Kambusters President Greg Hall at 306-621-1172 or Frank Pohozoff at 306-641-6276 for details, or visit the Kambusters website at www.kambusters. com

Skateboard Park If you packed a skateboard for the holidays then you will want to check out the great skateboard park in the heart of the city. Yorkton boasts one of the premier outdoor skateboard parks in the province. It is an ideal place to show off skills in a sport with a growing base and increased recognition of what it takes to be great at the activity. The park right off Broadway Street in the city is part of a larger Brodie Avenue Redevelopment, which includes a paved walking path, which connects with Patrick Park Disc Golf Course. The park is concrete and includes a range of jump elements which are sure to be both a challenge and a thrill for users, and once the snow melts each spring becomes a very busy recreational facility in Yorkton Skaters planning a holiday in the city, or just passing through, will want to make sure to check it out. The park was a community effort becoming a reality after the project received a $150,000 investment prize from Aviva Community Fund Contest toward a new facility. In addition to the Aviva dollars the City of Yorkton matched the win.
