Yorkton Regional High School 2016 Valedictory Address

Good afternoon friends, family, teachers, and of course, fellow graduates, we wouldn’t be here without you. I am honored to be standing in front of you, representing the Yorkton Regional High School graduating class of 2016. It has been a long journey to get where we are today, with lots of ups and downs, but it has been worth it. We have all accomplished so much in our four years here at the YRHS. This is in no small part thanks to all of the teachers, family members, and everybody else who pushed us to our full potential. Elementary School is very different from High School, just like High School is very different from Post-Secondary and Post-Secondary is very different from real life. In elementary school we learned how to count to ten and play nice on the playground. In high

school we have learned how to study and work hard so we can succeed. We have learned accountability, the value of friendships, to always walk on the right side of the hallway, and, most importantly, we learned how to park in the parking lot. Well, some of us. When we move forward, whether it be to further schooling, the work force, or to travel abroad, we can take what we learned here, at the YRHS, and apply it in these new situations. As we move on to these new adventures, there will be many things about high school that we will miss. The teachers knowing our names, being able to name everyone in our class, the friendships we have made over the past four years, and, most of all, going home to a home cooked meal. Next year we can look forward to coming home to fresh organic home

Emily Bradshaw cooked Kraft Dinner and hot dogs. I would like to thank all of our teachers for making sure we learned as much as we could, even if we didn’t want to. Mr. Clark always passed out candy in class if we answered our prize question correctly and he made sure every student was asked a question at least once every day. Too bad we won’t get candy in

real life. And Mr. Sharpe’s Friday song, although sometimes annoying, will definitely be missed in the future. The teachers at the YRHS really have helped us to succeed; they have dedicated many hours grading our assignments and spending extra time with us so we understand a concept, when instead they could’ve been spending time with their own families. I would also like to thank our families. They have been by our sides from the very first day of kindergarten and we wouldn’t be here, walking across the stage, without them. They were always there cheering us on at sporting events, listening to our band concerts, watching our drama productions, and nagging us to do our homework. Even though we hated it, we have to admit, a lot of those assignments wouldn’t have been done

without them. I also have to thank the Administration for always keeping the school running smoothly. We have no idea all the things that they do from timetables to reminding us of deadlines. Last but not least, I would like to thank my graduating class. Throughout my time here, I have made countless memories, as I am sure you all have. I will always remember the time when our band bus was stuck in the ditch and we had to stay overnight in the small town of Morse. The times we had to stand outside freezing for what felt like forever during a fire drill. The, mostly, friendly competition to be the top RCR group. And of course, when the whole high school rallied behind a YRHS family member in a time of need. These band trips, sports tour-

naments, drama festivals, skills competitions, and the many other school activities that we have been fortunate enough to attend have given us a lifetime of memories.

As this journey comes to an end and new adventures begin, we know we will be okay because, as Dr. Seuss said, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go...

Our school has given us all of the tools so that we can succeed in the future. We have learned so much, grown so much, and accomplished so much in our four years here. As we move on with our lives, whatever that direction may be, we will always be in search of the Great Orange Pumpkin.
