Pooling expected to reduce waits

If it works in the north it has the potential to benefit all areas of the province. Patients in northern Saskatchewan will now have better access to orthopedic specialists as physicians have started sharing patient referrals, so that patients can choose to take the next available appointment rather than waiting for a particular specialist. Victoria Hospital’s Department of Orthopedics in Prince Albert has introduced “pooled referrals”, a process that gives patients the option of seeing the first available specialist who is qualified to treat their condition. Four orthopedic specialists work within the department. “This is another innovative way to help streamline the surgical care process and provide better service to patients,” Health Minister Don McMorris says. “I thank the special-
ists involved for working with the Ministry of Health to introduce this new option for patients.” Pooled referrals are part of the provincial government’s commitment to improving access to surgical care. Wait times to see a specialist have been identified as one of the “bottlenecks” in the surgical care system. “Pooled referrals streamline the referral process and ensure that patients will be seen by the most appropriate surgeon in the shortest time, hence reducing wait times,” Orthopedic Surgeon and Department Head Dr. Shashi Brijlall adds. “The main aim is to be patient-focused and to improve quality of care.” General surgeons in Prince Albert also plan to begin pooling referrals later this spring. Days are numbered for Duff landmark: church to close
A part of Duff’s landscape which has served as both a church and a museum has its days numbered. St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, built in 1919 and dedicated in 1921, is for sale and when and if it is sold, it will be removed from the spot it exists in
presently. It is many years removed from the days when Duff was a thriving community on Highway 10 when stockyards, a Coop store, a Red and White store, lumberyard, cafe, two garages and a blacksmith shop were all in business.
Watching her hometown decline in population over the years from over 330 at one point to only 43 recently, has been a sad process for Rita and Norman Schick who now reside in Melville. “We used to have come-and-go teas

and wiener roasts and barbecues out there,” Rita says. “Nobody got paid, it was all done by volunteers. Everybody just chipped in and did their share.” Continued on Page 2.

“I would say the church had a fairly strong congregation,” says Norman who served as mayor of Duff for 26 years while Rita filled the role of village secretary for 33. When St. Peter’s was closed as a church is 1967, it had hosted 246 births and baptisms, 252 youth and adult confirmations, 73 marriages and 53 burials with Rev. W. Krahn the first man of the cloth to stand at the pulpit. The second life for the church, originally built for a cost of $5,000, was as the Duff Community Heritage Museum which held its first organizational meeting in June of 1985 with Walter Gessner as president and Shirley Ulmer as secretary/treasurer. “Everybody put stuff in the museum,” offers Norm. “It had anything and everything to do with living in Duff in it. There was a kitchen and a woodbox and coal pail. It even had an old phone with the old dialer.” Paul Barbeau, who served as the museum’s last secretary/treasurer under chairman and
current Duff mayor David Hollinger recalls his favorite part as the choir loft. “They set up the loft as a school room and everything was in it, maybe even a strap,” chuckles Barbeau. The museum officially closed May 31, 2011 with the funds raised by it donated to the Duff Cemetery and Duff Community Association when the board of directors felt raising funds to repair a damaged foundation simply wasn’t feasible for the village. The Schicks still feel for their old hometown and Norm has a theory as to why other centers like Lemberg and Neudorf are thriving while Duff is on the decline as far as population is concerned. “Places like Neudorf and Lemberg are on the way up because of the location. Over the years, Duff just got to be too close to Melville so people left,” he explains. “It’s sad, no doubt about it,” Rita says. “First the schools went and then the elevator went with it and it really just seems like it faded away.”

Prehistoric birds found in Sask. The Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) has identified a new species of prehistoric birds, based on fossils discovered in Grasslands National Park in southwest Saskatchewan. “This discovery is yet another example of the great scientific work going on at the RSM,” Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Bill Hutchinson says. “The RSM’s impact on the international stage, and through research projects like the one using the Canadian Light Source in Saskatoon, continues to make the RSM the centre for palaeontological research in Saskatchewan.” In a paper just released by the journal Palaeoworld, authors Larry Martin of Kansas University, the late Evgeny Kurochkin of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Tim Tokaryk, of the RSM, announce an entire new family of loon-like, toothed, aquatic birds, from the end of the Cretaceous Period.
Named Brodavidae, it includes a new genus – Brodavis – and four new species. The species Brodavis americanus was discovered in Grasslands National Park in southwest Saskatchewan, as well as other parts of North America. “This is an amazing series of discoveries that fills in the gaps in our timeline,” Curator of Palaeontology for the Royal Saskatchewan Museum Tim Tokaryk adds. “What also makes these discoveries significant is that it appears that the birds were adapting, moving from a coastal marine habitat to inland freshwater rivers and lakes. This gives us the tantalizing possibility that, unlike in earlier times when their ancestors were foot-propelled, flightless, divers, these Brodavid species may have retained the capacity for flight.” It was known that some types of these aquatic birds (Hesperornithiforms) existed at the time of the Tyran-
nosaurus rex and Triceratops. However, little was known about the diversity of these birds at the time just prior to the extinction event of 65 million years ago, which wiped out the dinosaurs. Scientists have long wondered how close to the end of the Cretaceous period this group of birds lived and whether they were still as abundant as they were at earlier times. Research will continue on the fossils already collected as will the search for more. The four species came from Saskatchewan, the United States and Mongolia. Grasslands National Park, along with other areas in southwest Saskatchewan, continues to be a rich source of fossils. The Royal Saskatchewan Museum scientists continue to do research in a number of areas, including palaeontology, environmental sustainability, First Nations history and archaeology as well as wildlife ecology. It has been shown to even out the workload between specialists, reduce the number of longest waiting patients and offer timely access when a specialist is away from the office for an extended period. Pooling of referrals is endorsed by the Saskatchewan Medical Association, Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association and the province’s Senior Medical Officers. “The pooled referral system means faster access for my patients to the surgical care they need,” Regina family physician and Senior Medical Officer Committee Chair Dr. Brian Laursen said. “Past experience with pooled referrals has taught me that for the non-emergent and non-urgent patient, this system offers the shortest wait for a consult with a specialist.” Patients may still opt for a specific surgeon if they wish, but they may end up waiting longer. Pooled referrals are part of the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative (SkSI) four-year plan to improve surgical patients’ experiences and reduce wait times. Too old for road trips Ed, my neighbor next door, insisted he was doing me a favor yesterday. When Ed heard I was heading off to Saskatoon to pick up our seven-year-old granddaughter, he volunteered to come for the ride. I knew it was going to be a long day when I hit my forehead on the trunk lid while loading the car. On a four-hour drive to Saskatoon by myself, I bring several of my favorite music CDs and look forward to some good music and a leisurely talk to God in prayer. This is always in contrast to my trip home with my granddaughter who doesn’t believe in any silence in a four-hour drive. It seemed like Ed was the one with a week off school, as he was really cranked up on our drive to the city. Unless Ed and I get into an argument, conversation between us is not an issue because Ed is never short of words. Even if we stop to get a coffee, Ed winds up talking to 98 per cent of the people in the truck stop. Ed is one of those people who believes if he talks everyone will be thrilled and delighted to listen to him. On a scale of one to ten, Ed is a ten out of ten for nonstop talking. Ruby, Ed’s wife, has commented that Ed’s talking can cause headaches. I must admit that the

Two nonstop talkers both talking full force at the same time resulted in my migraine. Between Foam Lake and Melville, the talking duo became the singing partners by shouting along to 50 Silly Songs, twice over, from the CD of the same name. By the time we reached home, I was ready to sign an affidavit stating that “Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, and I am going to the garden to eat worms.” Ed went off into the sunshine to his house happily singing “The Crawdad Song,” while our granddaughter went skipping and singing to our house singing “The Cat Came Back.” It isn’t just children that enjoy silly songs, wacky cartoons and absurd jokes. At what age do we need to discern between what is silly and what is serious? What do we need to hear and see? What do we want to hear and see? It seems we often quit listening because
we don’t like to hear what we heard before. Sadly, there will always be a desire to ignore what God has to tell us. There will always be a hunger for rebellion towards what God has to say. The prophet Isaiah complained centuries before the birth of Jesus, “The Lord says – they have chosen their own ways – For when I called, no one answered. When I spoke no one listened. They did evil in my sight and chose what displeases me.” When our granddaughter visits for a week, there is always one question: Didn’t she hear what we said to do or did she choose to ignore us? Paul told the young preacher Timothy that the people of their day were into godless myths and old wives’ tales. Timothy was instructed to devote himself to the public reading of the Scripture, to preaching and teaching, because if he persevered in them he would save both himself and his hearers. Changes for Golf Saskatchewan events
YMATC ATHLETES – Two students from the Yorkton Martial Arts Training Centre (YMATC) competed at the Manitoba Open Grappling Championships in Winnipeg recently. Colton LaBelle (r) dominated his divisions winning gold in both gi and no gi grappling. His older brother Lane (l) was able to win a silver medal in his gi division.
Golf Saskatchewan announced major changes to four provincial championships beginning with the 2012 tournament season. Beginning this year, the SGI CANADA Saskatchewan Junior Men’s Championship, the SGI CANADA Saskatchewan Junior Women’s Championship, the Saskatchewan Amateur Women’s Championship, and the Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur Men’s Championship will move from previous four-day formats to now operate under three-day formats. “As an association we continually to strive to evolve based on the feedback we receive,” says Dan Ukrainetz, Manager of Tournaments and Player Services for Golf Saskatchewan. “Consistently what we have heard is that the players would prefer a threeday format for these tournaments. It will mean less cost for the players during the tournament and for many people it will mean taking less time off of work.” In addition, each provincial championship tournament will begin competitive play on the Monday of the tournament week. The Amateur Men’s Championship will remain as a fourday event, while the Senior Men’s and Women’s Championships will continue to operate as a three-day event, having previously changed in 2007. The final two tournaments of the Golf Saskatchewan tournaments season are the Saskatchewan Women’s Rosebowl Championship and the Saskatchewan
Mixed Team Championship. The Women’s Rosebowl Championship will continue to operate as a mid-week event in early August. The Mixed Team Championship once again will close out the Golf Saskatchewan tournament schedule. Former Melville resident claims bodybuilding title Former Melville resident Melissa Leier is set for another run at a national bodybuilding title. Leier recently competed in the Saskatchewan Amateur Body Building Association (SABBA) championships in Regina, and came away at the top of the podium in Women’s Figure Tall. Leier, taking part in her second Provincials, thinks her experience carried her to the first-place finish in what was a very close competition. “All the girls looked really good, but my main competition was in her first year,” says Leier who came in first-place on four judges cards while her nearest competitor counted three first-place votes. “I really wanted to show my confidence on the stage and I think being
NCAA basketball clinic in Regina Gonzaga University’s Hall of Fame Coach Jerry Krause will be coming to Regina June 2 and 3 for a basketball Coaching Clinic and Players Camp at Riffel High School. “I am very much looking forward to coming up to Regina and to spend some time in Saskatchewan” says Krause. “This will be my second time coming through the province for a basketball clinic, and I always enjoy working with the local basketball coaches, and the up-and-coming basketball players.” The two day clinic will feature an adult coaching clinic in the morning, both days, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. In the afternoon Coach Krause will be conducting a players camp for boys and girls ages 11-17, both days from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. The Gonzaga Bulldogs have established themselves as one of the Elite NCAA programs over the past decade, with four trips to the Sweet Sixteen, and Coach Krause has been a key part of that success. They have appeared in the NCAA tournament in each of the past 12 years, and were ranked as high as #3 in the AP Top 25 in 2003-04 after a 28-3 record and another West Coast Conference Championship. Gonzaga saw three Canadian’s on
their roster this past season – Robert Sacre (North Vancouver, BC), Kelly Olynyk (Kamloops, BC) and Kevin Pangos (Newmarket, ON). Krause returned for his second stint with the Gonzaga University Mens team in the summer of 2001, after serving 8 years as an assistant coach from 1985-92. He had a 17-year career as head coach at Eastern Washington University, during which he recorded a 262-196 record and a .572 winning percentage. In addition to being a Hall of Fame coach, Krause is the most widely published coach in basketball history, having written over 30 books on coaching basketball, and having produced 30 instructional videos. Krause was a longstanding member of the NCAA Rules committee, the Board of Directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and served on the Selection Committee of the National Basketball Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the NAIA Basketball Coaches and National Association for Sports and Physical Education Halls of Fame. in last year’s event paid off for me.” Winning the SABBA title has Leier looking forward to August when she plans to join the field in the Canadian Body Building Federation in Vancouver but she allows the mandatory posing section of the SABBA event was more difficult this time around. “We were up there for awhile, so it got pretty tiring,” says the Saskatoon Health Region human resource consultant. “My legs were burning and my back was getting sore from trying to stand tall for the judging – my legs were sore for two days after.” Last year Leier made top-15 in the country at the Nationals and this year, says some different workout techniques may have her on the verge of a higher placing this time around. “My upper body tends to grow easier than my lower body, so my coach (Lyris Cappelle) worked on maintaining the upper body and growing my legs and lower
body,” explains Leier. “I felt like my size in my legs and gluteals gave me a more balanced physique.” She also feels more stage presence and some more polish in her routine enabled her to take first place in her chosen event. “I find now I get a healthy kind of nervousness when I compete and it brings a level of excitement and energy to the stage which helps me.” Out of the body building spotlight, Leier is still very busy with her fitness consulting business and she’s also been featured in Saskatoon Well Being, a free monthly magazine distributed where she currently resides.
