Health boost for Sunrise and Canora
The Sunrise Health Region and the Town of Canora have announced a new doctor is moving from Mississauga, Ontario to set up practice in Canora. Dr. Mala Singh will begin seeing clients on June 16, 2014. Dr. Singh will work out of the Canora Medical Clinic with Drs. Newstead and Egbagbe and Nurse Practitioner, Lorri Dennis. She joins the team developing the collaborative emergency centre (CEC) model of care. “We are very pleased that Dr. Singh has decided to practice in Canora,” says Mayor Terry Dennis. “I know that our community will warmly welcome her.” The Town of Canora and Sunrise Health Region are also working together to recruit a fourth physician. They believe the CEC model will attract physicians and other health care professionals interested in working in a team environment that promotes balanced work and personal life. “Access to appointments at the medical clinic will increase when Dr. Singh starts her practice,” adds Director of Health Services, Joanne Bodnar. “The availability of appointments at the medical clinic is important to the public and allows the hospital to re-
– new doc comes on board, more expected turn to its focus of acute and emergency care.” When fully in place, the CEC model will offer a set of primary health
care services and consistent 24/7 emergency coverage for the public. Upcoming Changes
Beginning on May 1, 2014, clients going for laboratory or x-ray work at the Canora Hospital
must bring with them the requisition form from the medical clinic. Faxing of requisitions will no longer occur. The laboratory

or x-ray requisition form must be brought with the client so that the hospital staff can enter the information from the form into the registration system. The registration system tracks admissions, discharges and transfers for a patient and links together different clinical applications; for example – digital x-rays and laboratory results. After June 16, 2014, the Canora physicians will see only those requiring emergency care in the Canora Hospital emergency room. People needing non-emergency attention will be directed to make an appointment at the medical clinic. This change in practice will keep the emergency room available for emergencies. Saskatchewan is introducing Collaborative Emergency Centres to address the challenges of providing health care in rural communities. It’s anticipated this model of health care delivery will improve access to stable, reliable primary health care, reduce emergency room visits, and increase patient and provider satisfaction. The Ministry of Health has worked closely with health regions, providers and interested communities to determine CEC sites.

Investing in the tech sector, opportunity knocks Recent technology sector events, such as King Digital Entertainment’s IPO and Facebook’s $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp, have investors talking about a bubble. Price-earnings ratios in the sector are certainly high, and some valuations may not be realistic, but data show the sector itself is in much better shape than fourteen years ago. PwC reports that 64 technology companies around the globe went public in the fourth quarter of 2013 (issue size greater US$40 million), garnering US$11.4 billion in total proceeds. American firms led with 35 IPOs representing 66 per cent of total proceeds. The U.S. also recorded the top five IPOs of the year including Twitter Inc.’s US$1
billion IPO. These numbers seem large but are smaller than previous years. In comparison, 2011 saw 87 global IPOs with US$15.9 billion total proceeds and 2012 brought 69 IPOs with US$23.2 billion total proceeds whereas, in 1999 alone, 308 technology companies went public. As well as fewer IPOs than prior years, the companies going public now are generally more stable. Facebook Inc, who raised $US16 billion in its May 2012 IPO, reported revenues of US$2.59 billion in the fourth quarter of 2013, a 63 per cent increase year over year. The company has 1.23 billion active users and boasts adjusted operating margins of 56 per cent. Technology sector
lion in 2014, a 3.1 per cent increase over the year prior. Enterprise software spending growth ranks the strongest at an expected growth rate of 6.8 per cent. Those seeking individual equity exposure may wish to revisit established names like Cisco, Intel and Microsoft. According to Canaccord Genuity analyst Martin Roberge, rising capex intentions, improving global growth prospects and more demanding market valuations will likely cause investors to re-enter those names. Roberge notes that while these companies are still reinventing themselves, investors are paid nicely to wait for the turnaround via dividends on average 3.3 per cent. The shares should provide a solid margin of

www.reynoldsinglis.ca heavy hitters include Apple Inc who recently reported revenues of US$57.6 billion and Google Inc at US$16.9 billion. Facebook, Apple, and Google clearly have a more sustainable business model than the headline makers of the dot-com boom, and the sector as a whole has grown remarkably since then. Cisco Systems Inc reports that last year’s mobile data traffic was nearly 18 times the size of the entire global Internet in 2000. A sin-
gle exabyte of traffic traversed the global Internet in 2000, in contrast with 2013 when mobile networks carried nearly 18 exabytes of traffic. Cisco predicts that by 2018 global mobile data traffic will increase almost 11-fold, reaching 15.9 exabytes per month. The sector also has corporate side support as businesses use more information technology. Research provider Gartner Inc, says worldwide IT spending is projected to total $3.8 tril-
safety trading at 12.5x one-year forward EPS. Investors wanting a risk-adjusted way of accessing the space can opt for an exchangetraded fund. Renowned children’s advocate slated for area sessions Submitted by Regional Kids First Exciting news! Renowned children’s advocate Dr. Jean Clinton will be speaking in Weyburn on May 15. Dr. Clinton is an Associate Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuro-Science at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Her special interest lies in brain development, and the important role that relationships play in brain development. Clinton champions the development of a na-
tional, comprehensive child well-being strategy including a system of early learning and care for all young children and their families. She is equally committed to ensuring that children’s and youths’ needs and voices are heard and respected. She has authored papers on early childhood development, poverty, infant neglect, children’s mental health, resilience and adolescent brain development. Despite all these great achievements, Clinton will tell you that her greatest ac-
complishment is being the mother of five great kids who range in age from 19 to 29 years. Sponsored by the Southeast Regional Intersectoral Committee and the Weyburn Early Childhood Network, Dr. Clinton will be making three separate presentations in Weyburn. Two daytime sessions will be held at McKenna Hall. The morning session, “The Adolescent Brain”, runs from 10 am to noon. The afternoon session, “The Early Childhood Brain”, begins at 1 p.m. and continues until 4
p.m. Both sessions will benefit anyone who has an interest in the wellbeing of children, youth and families, such as parents, caregivers, counsellors, educators, family support workers, health professionals, interventionists, librarians, literacy coordinators, parent mentors, program managers, town/city/RM councillors and other community leaders. For more information or to register for the daytime sessions, please call Regional KidsFirst at (306) 4532071 or email sc.cd@
regionalkidfirst.ca. There will be a $20 charge to cover lunch and nutrition breaks. Registration deadline is May 9. In addition to the daytime sessions, Dr. Clinton will also be giving a special presentation for parents from 6 – 7 p.m. at Haig School. Dr. Clinton is a mom who believes that all kids are our kids. “Building Better Brains” will provide information to help parents and caregivers give infants and tod-
dlers the best start in life. The parent session is FREE of charge and FREE child care will be provided for this session only. If child care is required please call (306) 842-2812 prior to May 9th. Dr. Clinton’s presentations are known to be touching, informing and eye-catching. We hope that participants from throughout Southeast Saskatchewan will join us to hear Jean’s message in Weyburn on May 15.
Sask families to benefit from investment
Saskatchewan families will benefit from 24 additional inpatient beds to be added to the Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan following a $20 million investment by the Government of Saskatchewan. Ours is a growing province with increased need for children’s and maternal health services,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan comments. “Increasing the number of beds will ensure that we can meet the needs of infants, children and mothers, now and into the future. We need to get the size of the facility right to reflect our province’s growing population.” The original project scope included the construction of a 152-bed children’s hospital. The $20 million in additional funding will add 24 inpatient beds for a total of 176 private inpatient beds. This will increase the overall size of the hospital by 11 per cent or approximately 38,000 square feet, and bring total provincial investment in the Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan to $235.5 million. Since the hospital’s early design in 2011, Saskatchewan has hit an all-time high of more than 1.1 million people living in the province, with the second highest growth rate among the 10 provinces in 2013, behind only Alberta. “We are grateful for the provincial government’s commitment and support in ensuring Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan is designed and built for the future,” Saskatoon Regional Health Authority Board Chair Jim Rhode adds. “We have worked to do our due diligence in ensuring the hospital is the right size before the shovels hit the ground and we started construction.” “As we were nearing completion of blueprints, we saw continued pressure in children’s and maternal health services,” Chair of Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan Steering Committee and Vice-President Integrated Health Services, Saskatoon Health Region Jackie Mann says. “We felt we had to validate our planned bed numbers before we started construction and ensure those numbers were still appropriate given what we were seeing today and the

This investment in additional beds recognizes our province’s tremendous growth and ensures we will meet the needs of Saskatchewan residents into the future.” “The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan understands that major projects such as building a children’s hospital is complex,” Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan President and CEO Brynn Boback-Lane says. “We are grateful that our donors have been very generous and patient and we are all mindful that with the recent increase in our province’s population, it is prudent to ensure that this facility is able to meet new demands within pediatric and maternal care. “The Foundation is steadfast in our support to fundraise for this hospital and confident in the project moving forward, to ensure that Saskatchewan has an efficient Children’s Hospital for every child and family that will need it.” The facility requires new design work to accommodate the 24 new beds, and the hospital’s schedule has shifted by approximately five months. Construction is expected to start in September 2014 with the hospital scheduled to open in 2017.

Don’t share your favorite fishing spot Ed, my neighbor next door, has a problem with sharing anything that is valuable to him. Ed has told me, “Don’t disclose your good fishing spot. If you tell even one person, where the fishing is good, it won’t be yours any longer. Many will turn up there, and find all the fish that should be yours. Keep your advantages to yourself. No one needs to know where you catch your fish.” Ed tells me that a person should only share what he doesn’t want to keep, if it is no value to him any longer. He says that it is good to share your junk with other folks but very little else. It is okay, however, to share some interesting gossip or hilarious joke anytime. Since Ed is a faithful smoker, I asked if he would give a cigarette to someone if they asked him for one. “I wouldn’t make a habit of it,” he said. “If I did give someone a cigarette it would be both the first and last one ever. Never let people borrow from you or you’ll have them pestering you all the time.” So I asked Ed, “But if someone borrows stuff and returns it quickly, wouldn’t that be okay?” His only reply was, “No.” Ed is sure that I would not let other people use

my bank card, and that proves you should never let anyone borrow anything valuable, even if they are some of your favorite people. Ed is convinced that those closest to you can hurt you the most. Most would agree that it does happen that someone close to us can deliver the most hurtful blow against us. That was the case when Judas Iscariot one of Jesus’ twelve apostles betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. If we are wounded by a friend or close associate, it seems more painful since they were trusted as a friend. Peter, another of Jesus’ disciples, denied that he knew Jesus and that he had been one of Jesus’ men, while he was in the courtyard of the high priest. The people of Nazareth had clearly rejected Jesus as a rabbi and prophet for he had grown up before them. They could not believe he was anointed of God since they knew his fam-
ily and how he had been a carpenter among them. They got so angry at him that they tried to kill him for saying he fulfilled scripture. Thomas, still another disciple, refused to believe Jesus was alive from the dead unless he could see Jesus in person and touch the wounds of his crucifixion in his body. Did Judas betray Jesus for money? Was Peter afraid of being arrested himself if he admitted to being one of Jesus’ disciples? Yet, God betrayed Jesus on the cross to save all, both those who trust him and those who don’t. Many still fail to admit to being one with Jesus. Others are sure that their lives are too valuable to share with God? Trusting your life to God, means is your best advantage in yourself or in trust in God? Jesus has promised, “I am the way and the truth and the life no one comes to the Father except through me.”

Sugar is not so sweet
Sugar consumption is at an all-time high. According to Statistics Canada, we consume up to 172 grams, or 41 teaspoons, of added sugar per day. The negative health effects of consuming too much sugar are many, including obesity, suppressed immune system, hyperactivity, inflammation, anxiety, heart disease and high blood pressure. Dr. Natasha Turner, New York Times bestselling author and Founder of Clear Medicine in Toronto believes that cutting back on sugar is one of the single most important lifestyle changes we can make to improve our overall health and well-being. “My top health tip is to replace regular sugar, fructose, and artificial sweeteners with healthy alternatives, she says. “I recommend people switch to stevia, coconut sweetener, or to a true natural sweetener called xylitol, which stabilizes insulin and hormone levels. With the goal of reducing sugar consumption in favour of better health, here are some of Dr. Turner’s top tips: Add fibre and protein: Both fibre and protein help to counteract the effects of the sugar we consume. So make it a habit to add fibre in the form of ground chia seeds, ground flax seeds or fibre supplements to meals.
Ensuring each meal also contains a lean source of protein, such as low fat cheese, chicken, turkey or eggs will spark less of an insulin release. A good rule of thumb with packaged foods is to check the nutrition label –products containing more than 2 grams of fibre are considered to be high fibre sources. Products containing a similar amount of protein and carbohydrate on the label are also favorable choices for you. Be smart about your
sweeteners: Not all sugar substitutes are created equal. When substituting for the real thing, look to nature. As mentioned, xylitol is a great option since it has 40 percent fewer calories and 75 percent fewer carbohydrates than sugar. The Xyla brand is made from North American hardwood, is corn free, GMO free and gluten free, plus it looks, tastes and bakes just like sugar. Reduce the impact: Some foods actually help
control blood sugar. Adding a small amount of apple cider vinegar or cinnamon to a meal will help reduce the glycemic index of high-carbohydrate foods like pasta or desserts lessen the subsequent rise in blood sugar. And both add flavour with almost no calories. The bottom line when it comes to sugar is that less is more. Finding ways to lower intake can only add to our overall good health. www.newscanada.com
