Suspicious fires get attention – Kamsack blazes investigated On August 4 patrolling members from the Kamsack RCMP department observed a fire coming from a large abandoned building located on the corner of Queen Elizabeth Boulevard and 3rd Avenue South in the town. The local Fire Department was called and attended the scene immediately. Assistance was also obtained from Fire Departments from Canora and Rhein. The Rapid Response Team from Prince Albert also assisted in fighting the fire. Flames spread to an adjacent business which was also destroyed, says Cst. David Kisters of the Kamsack RCMP. “The efforts of the on-scene fire departments prevented the fire from further spreading to other businesses.” Just after this fire was called in a subsequent call was received reporting a wooden fence approximately one block from this scene burning. The Office of the Fire Commissioner as well as a RCMP Fire Scene Examiner have deemed both of these fires as suspicious in nature. Continued on Page 2.
CELEBRATING 100 YEARS – Centennial celebrations rang out in the small town of Bredenbury over the long weekend, attracting a gathering of least 600 people from all corners of the province and beyond. Above, RCMP march in a special parade held in honor of the event. Reducing home country bias – it’s time to diversify Ask a Canadian investor if the markets have been volatile and chances are the answer will be a resounding “yes,” reflecting the fact that Canadian markets have been rockier than those of our neighbor to the south. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), a commonly used benchmark for the implied volatility of the S&P 500 index options, has averaged just shy of 25 from
August 2007 until now. The current VIX reading is just under 15 though, which is 40 per cent lower than the average. One reason Canadians feel the effects of volatility so strongly is because their portfolios tend to be highly concentrated in Canadian investments. The S&P/TSX Composite Index went from a high of 12,878 in March to a low of 11,947 a little over a month
New Co-op opens
The Yorkton Co-operative Association officially opened a new food store in Kamsack. “It’s been a long process from concept development to the opening of the store, but it will be a wonderful facility,” says Gene Krepakevich, President of the Board. The new store has all the traditional offerings of a conventional grocery store including dry groceries, fresh meat and produce and two newly added fresh departments which are bakery and deli. “Nothing beats the smell of fresh baking in the morning,” says Krepakevich, “and now we have the ability to provide these products, baked right in-store.” In-store made salads, BBQ chickens and fresh wraps, sandwiches and subs adorn the deli case. The new store will incorporate the latest standards in interior decor and has a number of energy efficiencies including LED lights in the coolers, energy efficient refrigeration racks and heat reclamation units. The facility also has 50 parking spots and ample parking for large vehicles and trucks pulling RV’s. The traffic traveling through to Duck Mountain Provincial Park will now have a place to park a large RV and truck and pick up groceries before heading out to the lake. An official Grand Opening event was held on Friday complete with ribbon cutting ceremonies, door prizes and dignitaries in attendance. A charity BBQ was also held with all proceeds going to the Sadok Ukrainian Dance Group.

www.reynoldsinglis.ca later, a decrease of 7.2 per cent. That’s hard for any investor to stomach. The tendency toward a home bias in constructing portfolios is not peculiar to Canadians. It is a common trait with investors around the globe. According to research from Vanguard, this bias is often conscious and intentional, with investors actively overweighting domestic holdings at the expense of foreign securities. The good news is that Canadians have an opportunity to do something about it. According to a new poll conducted by Leger Marketing on behalf of Edward Jones, Canadian investors are currently holding 13 per
cent of their money in GICs. The survey also revealed that half of them plan to make some kind of investment this year. These investors should use their cash advantage to diversify their portfolios and increase their foreign exposure. From a risk management perspective, it makes sense. A portfolio comprised solely of Canadian securities opens the door to significant volatility because nearly 80 per cent of the S&P/TSX 60 is comprised of only three sectors: financials, energy, and materials. While the financials generally tend to be more stable, the energy and materials
sectors are subject to high volatility. In fact, energy and materials have played a key role in the overall underperformance of the S&P/TSX this year. Canadian investors can start by diversifying into U.S. equities, guarding against sector concentration risk and increasing their defensive positioning. This also gives them access to sectors such as consumer products and healthcare, which are otherwise under-represented in Canada. According to Canaccord Genuity analysts, the backdrop for the U.S. markets remains positive, despite the extended rally. Not only are there fewer signs of systemic risk but also there are reduced policy valuation constraints. And, better than expected economic and corporate profit trends should allow for continued valuation expansion. A simple way of adding U.S. equity exposure is to invest in exchange-

traded funds (ETFs) that provide broad market exposure. Investors can opt for Canadian dollar hedged ETFs to guard against currency risks or they can invest directly in U.S. ETFs if they have U.S. cash. For hedged exposure, investors might consider either the BMO Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (TSX: ZDJ) or the BMO U.S. Dividend ETF (TSX: ZUD). For unhedged broader market exposure, investors can look at the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (NYSE: IVV) or SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSE: SPY). Doing what is good for you is harder than you think Ed, my neighbor next door, thought that it wouldn’t take much to bring his painful shoulder back to normal. Getting his shoulder healed has been a lot harder than he imagined. Ed wanted a quick, easy recovery, which is what we all hope to experience with an injury. When Ed’s shoulder remained continually sore after taking Tylenol, and rubbing it with Voltaren, Ice Gel and Rub.A535 he was forced to see his doctor. X-rays confirmed that Ed needed to take physical therapy to get it as good as new again. Two weeks of physical therapy were prescribed which left him saying that fate had dealt him a lousy hand. I told Ed that he just needed to complete the therapy prescribed. I asked him if I could share with him from a book I was reading, and he was okay with it, as long as, it wasn’t the Bible. I referred to a book by Marshall Goldsmith, which offers six reasons why we tend to give up doing what we need to do. I used my own words because Ed has a ten second attention span. I told him that what we need to do, takes longer to do than we thought it would take. It is harder to do than we first thought. Other things distract
Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com us. We get frustrated because we cannot see the results we want. When we see we are making progress we decide that we have done enough. When we get the results we want, we don’t want to do anything to maintain them. “Isn’t that just the way it is?” I asked Ed. “I didn’t hear all of it. I stopped listening after frustrated. I’m frustrated. I didn’t need a stupid book to tell me that,” Ed said. We stopped talking there and then. I hope Ed has finished his shoulder therapy. It seems to me that many folks don’t follow through praying the Lord’s Prayer. Yes, they say it at church but tend to leave it there. It is so much easier to pray personal or homemade prayers, when praying at home because they are made up of our own words. The Lord’s Prayer is the words of Jesus. Jesus’ prayer or the Lord’s Prayer is found both in the book of Matthew and in the book of Luke. In the
Matthew account, Jesus warns against showing off in public with long prayers to get the attention of people. Jesus also directs there, that prayer should be done privately or in secret. Most who pray know that is more difficult to pray than it might seem. There will always be distractions to keep us from praying, and praying is meant to be maintained each day. The Lord’s Prayer focuses on God, and His will and power to bless our lives. The Lord’s Prayer stresses our need to receive forgiveness for our sins from God and extend our own forgiveness to others who sin against us. God delivers us from temptation and evil. Begin your prayers at home: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.” – (Luke 11)
Farm safety: taking away risks
Every farm has potential hazards and, while not every hazard can be removed from the farm, risks can be controlled. Due to the isolation of farm work, there is often a long delay before an injured person is found. This delay results in a longer period before first aid or medical treatment can be started, which in turn increases the likelihood that the injury will be disabling or fatal. Prevention is the key to maintaining a safe farm environment. As such, St. John Ambulance is offering some tips on how to keep a safe workplace on the farm: 1. Use emergency communication plans and proper first aid techniques to help you be prepared to handle real-life emergencies. This includes having first aid kits available throughout your farmyard and machinery, and knowing where workers on your farm are working and when they are expected to re-

turn. 2. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (i.e. respirators) when working in farm buildings, shops, granaries and when handling pesticides and other chemicals. 3. Equip tractors with rollover protective structures to prevent injuries from rollovers and wear a seatbelt to eliminate falls from farm equipment. Properly train operators on the equipment they will be using to reduce the likelihood an accident will occur. 4. Turn the power off on equipment you are servicing, unplugging or repairing. When working with a combine, regularly stop operation to service and inspect the chains, belts, wires, and hydraulic hoses (avoid hydraulic fluid injection injuries by using paper or cardboard to detect leaks). 5. Keep shops clean and maintained to reduce incidents caused by slips and falls. Being prepared for an
emergency can make all the difference. St. John Ambulance offers a First Aid on the Farm Audit booklet to provide you with information necessary for maintaining a safe farm environment. Stop by your local office to pick up a booklet and find out more information about First Aid on the Farm. For over 125 years, Canadians have trusted St. John Ambulance for quality first aid training and products. St. John Ambulance is a volunteer based nonprofit charity dedicated to improving the health and safety of Canadians. St. John First Aid courses help support community projects throughout Saskatchewan. See what St. John can do for you – call 1-888-273-0003 or visit us at www.sja.ca/Saskatchewan.
