Drainage input sought – online forum established If you’ve got input, they want to hear it. Saskatchewan’s Water Security Agency has announced it is launching its first ever online consultation forum to receive input from Saskatchewan residents on agricultural drainage. “We committed to developing new approaches and regulations on agricultural drainage in the 25 Year Saskatchewan Water Security Plan and this is a major step in that direction,” Minister responsible for Water Security Agency Ken Cheveldayoff comments. “This online forum offers an opportunity to have a large number of people share ideas and information to help us develop the best overall policy.” The Water Security Agency hired Saskatoon based Insightrix Research to create the online engagement forum to consult with individuals across the province. The forum will focus on agricultural drainage and be active from September 1 to March 31. It allows participants to discuss a range of topics related to agricultural drainage, including downstream flooding, water quality, and effects on biodiversity.

CHILDREN’S PIONEER DAYS – The Western Development Museum recently hosted its children’s pioneer days event. The three day mini camp featured handicrafts, cooking skills and pioneer activities for kids aged nine to twelve. Pictured above, local children learn about basket weaving.

Considering cash alternatives: it’s a short term tool weighting to be prudent. Some investors set cash aside for planned expenses or emergencies, while others want the flexibility of moving quickly when market volatility generates bargains. A number simply like the idea that cash is an asset that won’t suddenly drop in value, thereby providing capital preservation. Whatever their reasons, holding cash should not be passive and investors are wise to seek the best return. Over the short-term, some may find it easiest to opt for investment savings accounts. These products trade in a similar fashion to money market mutual funds, but without the high fees. Investment savings accounts have competitive rates that change with the market; the funds are not locked-in and can be easily accessed within one business day; and they are insured up to $100,000 by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation

Investors are sitting on a lot of cash. The Investment Company Institute reports total U.S. money market mutual fund assets are currently $2.632 trillion with $1.705 trillion attributed to institutional investors and $926.38 billion to retail investors. Canadian investors are similarly positioned. An Edward Jones poll shows that Canadians currently hold 13 per cent of their money in GICs and one-in-four plan to expand their cash and short-term holdings. The financial crisis remains fresh in the memory of some and Canadian market volatility keeps the image vivid. In addition, speculation surrounding the U.S. Federal Reserve and its eventual tapering of Quantitative Easing has prompted some fair sized market movements, as have reports of slowing growth in China. ‘Tis the season! Treat yourself to tasty tomatoes! Mmm! There’s nothing quite like the delicious taste of that first homegrown, sun-ripened tomato of the season, is there? With the fresh flavor bursting in your mouth, you also have wonderful nutrients flooding your body! One medium tomato contains only about 25 calories, but supplies allimportant B Vitamins, folate and potassium, along with about 1400 I.U.’s of Vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene. It also provides about 20 mgs. of Vitamin C, which is concentrated in the jellylike substance that surrounds the seeds. Ripe and unripe tomatoes are nutritionally similar, except that red tomatoes contain up to 4 times as much beta carotene as green ones. RICH IN ANTIOXIDANTS

Tomatoes are rich in lycopene and beta-carotene. Lycopene is an antioxidant carotenoid which has many health benefits, including reduced risk of cancer, exercise-induced asthma and atherosclerosis. It gives tomatoes their red color and helps protect against cancer-causing free radical cell damage that can occur when the body uses oxygen. Researchers believe that lycopene is a natural cancer-fighting agent. Eating tomatoes regularly may possibly reduce the risk of prostate cancer for men. Harvard studies showed that men who consumed tomatoes or tomato-based foods at least FOUR times weekly had a 20 PER CENT lower risk of prostate cancer than those who avoided tomatoes. Men who ate tomatoes 10 times weekly reduced their risk by almost half! Lycopene is also present in apricots, pink grapefruit, guava, papaya and watermelon.

Extravirgin olive oil has been used for centuries in Mediterranean cultures, and rightly so, since it is an excellent choice for this purpose. Olive oil provides major health benefits, due to its many heart-protecting nutrients. Many studies have confirmed that olive oil can reduce the risk of some cancers, help to reduce LDL cholesterol and improve rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers also speculate that cooking releases the fat-soluble lycopene from the tomatoes’ cells, and that a bit of oil, such as that in pizza or tomato sauce, intensifies the protective effect. However, olive oil should not be used for frying, since it can be damaged by high temperatures.

Provincial athletics commission approved: changes coming The Government of Saskatchewan has approved the establishment of a provincial athletics commission and is taking the necessary steps to have the commission running by the summer of 2014. This commission will hold the authority to sanction professional combative sports, including mixed martial arts and boxing events. Bill S-209, a bill to amend section 83 of the Criminal Code to legalize the sport of mixed martial arts across Canada was passed in June 2013. This

amendment makes professional boxing and mixed martial arts contests legal in Canada when they have the authorization of an athletics commission created by provincial legislation. The legislation will provide protocols for license applications, event permits and the terms and conditions of an event. It will ensure that competitors participate in appropriate pre-fight medical testing, such as concussion screening, blood tests and eye exams. It will ensure that

qualified medical staff and event officials are hired, that promoters and competitors have the proper licenses, and that promoters have suitable liability insurance. The commission will be responsible for tracking competitors’ fighting history and will ensure safety protocols are enforced. If the government is involved, a consistent standard of qualifications, rules, regulations and safety protocols for all participants and officials across the province, through a uniform licensing framework, will occur.

This will ensure the safety of the athletes. Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Kevin Doherty says, “A provincial athletics commission will help ensure the safety of everyone involved in professional combative sport competitions. After the amended changes to the Criminal Code were made in June, our government received the clarification we needed to move forward on this.” The amendments to the Criminal Code also impact amateur combative sports. The

province is entering into an agreement with the Saskatchewan Martial Arts Association (SMAA). The SMAA will sanction and oversee amateur combative sports including mixed martial arts, kickboxing, modified muay thai and full-contact karate. To qualify for sanctioning, events must be hosted by a member of the SMAA. Competitors cannot be paid and they must be 18 or older. The SMAA will start sanctioning amateur combative sporting events immediately.
