Pasture transitions are on the way

– consultations to commence If you make use of a community pasture get ready for some changes that you will have the opportunity to be a part of. The Government of Saskatchewan has announced it will be consulting with federal pasture patrons on the transition of federal community pastures to patron-controlled ownership and operation. “We have said all along that the patrons of these pastures are the priority for our government throughout this transition,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart comments. “Our goal is to ensure patrons are able to continue using these lands and we want to give them every opportunity to have input about the transition of their pastures.” While these consultations continue, the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are working to ensure patrons are able to utilize these pastures for grazing in 2013. Both governments are negotiating a memorandum of understanding that will see federal staff continue to manage these pastures for the 2013 grazing season. Following the federal government’s decision to discontinue the Community Pasture Program, Saskatchewan established an advisory committee made up of industry leaders

and cattle producers. The advisory committee recommended the following principles form the framework for this transition: • Pasture patron groups will have the opportunity to own and operate each pasture; • Each pasture will be maintained as a complete block; Sales will be based on market values; and • Any sale of native prairie land will be subject to no-break and no-drain conservation easements. Representatives from each federal community pasture patron group were invited to participate in a conference call in July, and each patron advisory committee chairman has been sent an information package on the transition process. “We have had numerous inquiries by patron groups who are interested in owning and operating these pastures,” Stewart adds. “I encourage all pasture patron groups to look into forming legal entities or grazing co-operatives in order to transition these pastures into their hands.” Discussions are ongoing with the federal government and Farm Credit Canada on options for financing plans for patron groups to purchase their pastures.

New hope for MS patients

The first Saskatchewan resident has flown to Albany, New York on for the final stage of eligibility screening for a clinical trial of the effectiveness of Chronic Cerebro-Spinal Venous Insufficiency (CCSVI) in relieving symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS). The provincial government has announced it has committed $2.2 million to have Saskatchewan patients participate in the Albany clinical trial to further research in this area and allow Saskatchewan residents to play an active role in MS research. Andrew Dahlen of Saskatoon left for Albany to find out if he can participate in a two-year clinical study of the Liberation Therapy method of treating symptoms of the neurological disease. “This is a ground-breaking day for our province and for science,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan comments. “I wish Andrew a safe journey and thank him for his willingness to help advance our knowledge about the value of CCSVI as a treat-

New vaccine approved

Saskatchewan is expanding its infant immunization program by adding a rotavirus vaccine (ROTARIXTM) to its routine childhood immunization schedule this fall. ROTARIXTM is a two-dose oral vaccine series that will be given to infants between six weeks and eight months of age. “Immunizations play an important role in protecting the population against disease and we are pleased to offer this new vaccine to some of our youngest residents,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan says. The vaccine will be offered starting November 1, 2012, at the regular two and four month immunization appointments, in addition to the current publicly-funded vaccines for infants that are routinely offered by public health nurses. “Rotavirus is a highly communicable, common diarrheal illness that affects all ages but is most prevalent in infants and young children,” Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab adds. “Children under two years face the most severe complications, and the vaccine is a

safe and effective way to protect them against rotavirus infection.” In Saskatchewan, it is estimated that Rotavirus results in 9,000 episodes of illness in infants on a yearly basis, with 1,400 physician visits, 800 Emergency Room visits and 200 hospitalizations. Rotavirus causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines and is sometimes called gastroenteritis. Symptoms of rotavirus illness generally include several days of vomiting, diarrhea and fever. Loss of body fluids often results in dehydration that may require hospitalization. Rotavirus is spread easily from children who are infected to other children, often through contaminated hands and objects such as toys. ment for MS.” All prospective Saskatchewan participants in the clinical trial must first be screened by a Saskatchewan neurologist to ensure they meet eligibility requirements. They would then spend several days at Albany Medical Centre, where a final assessment will determine whether they will be accepted into the trial. Half of the research participants will have angioplasty to ease congestion in the veins, and the other half will not. This double-blind approach is a standard scientific method to ensure the integrity of the research results. The Saskatchewan neurologist will assist the Albany research team with assessments, referrals and ongoing monitoring of Saskatchewan participants. “I’m excited to be one of the volunteers involved, and to contribute to this research process,” Dahlen says. “I believe this research will provide information that will help MS patients in the future.” An estimated 3,500 Saskatchewan residents have MS, which impairs or destroys the functioning of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The MS prevalence in Canada and especially the prairies is among the highest in the world.

Discover Your New Smile… In Just One Day!

You don’t look like a good neighbor to me!

“Which lake were you at last week?” Ed, my neighbor next door, asked. “Emma Lake,” I answered. “Why would you go so far north with so many good lakes nearby?” demanded Ed. “It is fairly close to Prince Albert. We hadn’t been to Prince Albert for several years and it has one of the best music stores in Saskatchewan with a good variety of fiddle music books,” I replied. “Just great,” Ed griped. “All the dogs and coyotes will be howling if you start practicing your violin again!” “Just look at me. You can see my days are numbered, so just enjoy the scratching and squeaking on my violin while it lasts. Tell yourself that you’ll miss me when I’m gone,” I responded. “Yeah, it will be like missing hail damage and gout,” Ed grunted. Sometimes you cannot win. I think Ed has a good neighbor in me, but he just barely tolerates me. Perhaps he’d like me better if I stocked old cars in the back yard for parts. Or, if I had a guard dog named “Killer” barking in the yard day and night. Surely he’d be impressed if I changed the front yard to dirt with four bikes parked there - but not the kind you pedal. How about if I began hosting 6all* night parties with the

Does Ed know some neighbors do play music so loud that you learn lyrics in your own house that scare you and leave you wanting to wash your mouth out with soap! Ed will probably never be impressed with me as a good neighbor. Many weren’t impressed with Jesus either. God opens some minds and leaves others closed. While Jesus was on earth, many would only follow Jesus if they were impressed with him. Once, Jesus fed five thousand people with a few fish and a small amount of bread. The next day, many of those people hunted until they found Jesus. They were impressed by his miraculous feeding the day before. When Jesus invited them to believe in him as the living bread come down from heaven, they * refused $unless Jesus would awe them with another miracle. They were no longer satisfied

with the miracle of feeding five thousand the day before. Sadly, people only see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear. Thankfully, God knows how blind and deaf we are and can give us faith and new sight towards Him and others. God alone can “change the leper’s spots and melt the heart of stone.” At his trial, the high priest asked Jesus, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” So they then all condemned Jesus to death. This resulted in some spitting at him and striking him with their fists and the guards taking him and beating him. Only God can help us to see and understand and be impressed by the stain of sin and its disaster on us. Only God can help us to treasure our cleansing $ from sin through His Son Jesus Christ’s death on the cross. Only God can change unbelief to belief.

Organize the fridge cleverly to fuel teen athletes While summer seems like the perfect time for kids to kick back and relax, for parents of teen athletes it’s more important than ever to make sure the fridge is stocked and organized with healthy choices to keep them going and to support their nutritional needs. Growing teens need to make healthy nutritional choices, but for an athletic teen this becomes even more critical. The demands of competitive sport can take their toll on teens if they aren’t getting the right foods. In addition to physical growth and development athletic teens require more attention to nutrition to maintain energy levels, to promote building strong muscles and bones while providing fuel for endurance to train and compete. Not only was Kelly Anne Erdman the performance dietitian for Team Canada at the 2012 London Olympics, she also has another full time job: as a busy mom of two competitive teen athletes. She offers parents these quick tips for fridge organization and some nutritious snacks to keep handy for teens in sport. Plan Ahead for Balanced Snacks Erdman advises parents of teen athletes to work with their kids to develop an eating plan of wholesome carbohydrates, healthy fats and lean proteins for a well-balanced diet. Teens in competitive sport will need to eat more often than less active peers to support their energy requirements. If they’re running from school to training and tournaments, ready-togo healthy snack options like Greek-style yogurt, wrap sandwiches or nuts are good options. Keep singleserve containers in one visi-

ble area of the fridge to grab quickly when you’ve got to run. Make it Visible – Make it Accessible In a recent survey conducted by Samsung Canada, 43% of Canadians say they are more likely to eat what they see first in the fridge, but the majority of respondents (61%) admit they forget about consuming their produce tucked away into fridge crisper drawers because they can’t see it. “For teen and adult athletes, I advise that 50% of their diet be comprised of carbohydrates, which includes fresh fruits and vegetables,” says Erdman. New fridge technology like Samsung’s ‘twin cooling system’ keeps humidity levels higher in the fresh food section so produce can live anywhere in the fridge – not just the crispers. “If we can place colourful fruits and vegetables directly in our line of sight inside the fridge, the benefits will be greater consumption of nutrient-dense produce. Exceptional power produce options for active teens include fresh berries, mixed fruit salad, edamame beans, assorted peppers, grape tomatoes, avocadoes, hummus, bean and vegetable quinoa salad.” Keep protein options fun Active teens require more protein than their inactive counterparts. Erdman likes to keep her family fridge stocked with fresh fruits including berries, protein and calcium-rich choices like Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, low-fat milk, and almond or soy beverages – to easily combine with ice for a quick and tasty power smoothie, perfect for after practice or to take on the run. www.newscanada.com

Wheelchairs are a part of life for many people. Injuries or the natural aging process can make wheelchairs a necessity at some point. Those confined to a wheelchair oftentimes find themselves unable to get around their own homes, since many homes weren’t designed with wheelchairs in mind. Fortunately, there are a number of low-cost and little-work modifications you can make to your home to make it more wheelchair accessible. * Remove any loose carpeting or rugs. Whether you have a manual or electricpowered wheelchair, it is easy to get caught on any carpeting that might not be as secure as it once was. Similarly, rugs will more than likely get caught in your wheels. Simply removing these and replacing your carpet with new carpet that fits more snugly to the floor is a good way to make getting around a lot easier. * Replace your door knobs with levers. This will make getting in and out of your house as well as in and out of any rooms far less stressful. Door knobs can be difficult for a wheelchair-bound person to turn, but a lever can simply be pushed down and in to make access to the room easier. This is precisely the reason you’ll notice all hospital rooms have lever handles as opposed to knobs. * Install mini ramps on high door thresholds. Since many door thresholds can be high off the ground, getting a wheelchair over these thresholds can be difficult. By gluing or sealing down a few tiny wedges of wood or metal, you’re essentially making a mini ramp that will help you get in and out of your home sans help. * Install grab bars in your bathroom. Requiring help maneuvering in the bathroom can be embarrassing and one of the hardest parts of wheelchair life. You can install grab bars in your bathroom that should allow you to use the bathroom by yourself. These bars will stabilize you as you move from your wheelchair to your toilet and from the bathtub to your wheelchair and vice versa. All wheelchair-accessible public restrooms have these bars, so if you have the time, check them out to see how you can best place them around your bathroom. It is also important to note that many household doorways are too narrow for wheelchairs to fit through, so they will need to be widened. This, however, is a job best done by a professional. * Install a nonslip floor in your bathroom. Bathroom floors tend to get wet, becoming a danger for anyone, regardless of accessibility. Making your floor nonslip will greatly reduce the chances of you or your wheelchair slipping when you’re transferring from your chair to the tub or vice versa. Consider flooring tiles that are nonslip, or a durable, low-pile carpeting. * Install automatic sink fixtures. Motion-detecting sink fixtures can make operating your sink an easy process. With motion-detecting fixtures, all you need to do is place your hands under the faucet and wait for the water to come on. This negates having to reach for the sink handles. You might also want to consider

Making your home wheelchair accessible can be done with a few quick and easy renovations.

installing a pedestal sink. This reduces the amount of counterspace you’ll need to clear and opens up your bathroom even further. * Install a hose or nozzle in your shower. These can be beneficial (and easy to install) in a number of ways. A hose or nozzle system is essentially a moving shower head, meaning you won’t have to twist and turn when rinsing yourself off. Secondly, many of these nozzles have different settings, some of which perform massaging functions, which can help sooth body parts that might be aching or sore from sitting in your wheelchair or as a result of the rigors of getting around. These are also easily installed in most showers, making them an easy way to make one of life’s everyday chores more enjoyable and relaxing. * Remove gravel driveways and walkways. This can be done easily by a professional or someone who’s done it before. Gravel driveways and sidewalks make it difficult to get around. Installing a paved driveway is relatively easy and inexpensive. * Move your mailbox to make it more accessible. If your mailbox is at the end of your driveway or even attached to your house at chest level, you’ll want to move it closer to your front door and lower it to a level you can easily reach from your wheelchair. Also, you might want to consider a mail slot in your front door, but this might create problems when entering your home as you try and get yourself and your chair around your mail without rolling over it. * Buy a cordless or cellular phone. With a cordless or cellular phone, you won’t have to hurry into another room when the phone rings. Keep the phone nearby whenever you’re in the house to remove extra stress.

reapplication. And though this might sound like quite an endeavor, it should not take very long to strip a deck once you’ve applied the remover. Oftentimes, a good product will work in less than 30 minutes. • Protect it for the upcoming seasons: Because spring rolls right into summer, once you’ve cleaned your deck you’ll want to protect it from the pounding it’s liable to take over the next several months. Whether or not you decide to stain (or restain) your deck, make sure you protect it with a water-repellent finish. This protects your deck from those spring showers and also allows you to freely water any plants or flowers you may have planted around the deck without fear of damaging the wood. This is also essential if your deck surrounds a pool where water puddles are unavoidable. A good water-repellent feature will also have anti-mildew properties. That’s important, as the warm months ahead are prime periods for mildew growth.
