RECORD BREAKER! – August 24 was a day for making history. The Old Tyme Harvest for Hunger event took place in the Langenburg area, breaking a world record with 41 threshing machines working at the same time. Both a unique community display and a fund raising effort for the Canadian Food Grains Bank, the day was a historical one to celebrate. The event raised $40,000 cash and another $25,000 worth of crops. Learn more at: www.oldetymeharvest.com. Photo by: Yorkton’s Storm Hunter Ryan Crouse.
Recycle Saskatchewan – your one stop shop option It’s the way of the future, so we may as well get with the times. Recycle Saskatchewan has introduced a new website aimed at making information about recycling options easily available to consumers, by answering any questions from the residents of Saskatchewan regarding recycling. With the impending introduction of multi-material recycling, as well as recycling
changes at the municipal level, Recycle Saskatchewan says it seeks to be a “central hub” and trusted voice in recycling, by providing the public with ease of information during this potentially confusing time. “We are looking to leverage the members’ collective knowledge to become a one stop shop for information on recycling in Saskatchewan,” says Joan Meyer, Program Manager for Recycle Saskatchewan.
Recycle Saskatchewan is the umbrella organization for product management programs in Saskatchewan including Saskatchewan Association for Resource Recovery Corp (SARRC), Saskatchewan Paint Recycling Program (SPRP), Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corp (SSTC), SWEEP/ EPRA Saskatchewan (electronic products recycling), and SARCAN (beverage containers).
The new web platform allows for consumers to receive a timely response to their recycling questions from the members of Recycle Saskatchewan. “Our program acts as a unified voice for these stewardship organizations,” adds Meyer, “and supports the province-wide cause of creating a recycling-minded culture within the province.” Recycle Saskatchewan also serves as a mentor for new
product stewards that are being developed within the province. The collective expertise and knowledge of Recycle Saskatchewan will allow for the continued success of end-of-life product recycling in the province. In addition it has announced a new brand, which identifies Recycle Saskatchewan as its own entity and will be added to all the marketing materials of its members.

On Monday, September 2, people across Saskatchewan, from many backgrounds and traditions, spanning several generations, and representing a variety of occupations and professions, will gather together to celebrate Labour Day. First observed as a Canadian national holiday in 1894, Labour Day is now observed in dozens of countries across the globe every year. Originally a day to commemorate working people’s struggle for an eight-hour work day, Labour Day has become an important celebration of the contributions working people continue to make to our way of life. “Labour Day continues to be an extremely important day for Sas-

“Pride in Workmanship Guarantees A Quality Product”

For most people, a garage door usually isn’t the first thing on their priority list when it comes to things that should be maintained in the home. Unfortunately too many homeowners neglect and take for granted their garage doors as something that are just there and should just work. This simply is just not the case. Garage doors need to be maintained on a regular basis too. If the oil in your car is dirty; you change it, if the filter in your furnace is dirty; you replace it, you turn off your outside water line in the winter to guard against a pipe bursting from frozen water. You do these things to keep these machines and appliances in good running order and to prevent future damage which may come with a large repair bill. Your garage door is no different. Although a garage door may look very simple and uncomplicated, they are in fact quite the opposite. Every door is manufactured in a very precise manner, to a very precise set of regulations and specifications . For example, the torsion spring, which is the driving force behind making the door go up and down smoothly is measured out to a very scientific number. There are a wide range of spring gauges, thicknesses, coil sizes, lengths. All of which are measured out to fit a specific door size and weight. So why is it important to maintain your garage door? There are many reasons to maintain your door but for the purpose of this article we are going to concentrate on the torsion spring. The industry standard for most residential garage doors is for a spring that is rated for 10-15,000 cycles, simply meaning it is esti-
mated to be able to handle the door going up and down 10-15,000 times before needing to be replaced. That’s a 7-10 year time frame based on the door going both up and down twice a day, 365 days a year. That time frame is also based on the door being properly maintained. Even the slightest problem with the door, something that only a professional door technician would notice, say an unbalanced cable or a binding roller, can cause a great strain on the spring and significantly reduces its life cycle. A garage door which is not operating smoothly can turn into a very dangerous hazard, very quickly. A spring break happens in an instant and can be very dangerous as the full weight of the door can go into a free fall and cause significant damage to both the door itself and anything that may have been under the door as it fell, most commonly the roof or hood of your car! A garage door should be serviced twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. A technician will lubricate all the moving parts of your door, check over all the nuts and bolts and make sure they are all tight, check for roller breaks or binding, proper spring tension, door balance, and general overall condition of the door. Why chance serious damage, large repair bills, or even personal injury. With a simple tune-up, you can prevent serious problems from arising while ensuring you get the most life out of your garage door. Don’t wait until your door stops working to call an overhead door company. Be proactive, save yourself time and money. You’ll be happy you did!

Clean Up Before You Hit the Deck
(MS) — With spring quickly approaching, chances are you’re already envisioning putting away the winter clothes and dusting off the grill and spatula in anticipation of the season’s first party. As enticing as such an image can be, you’re likely well aware of the work that goes into readying your home for the shift in seasons. For backyard barbecue afficionados, one of the coming seasons’ biggest chores is to restore and protect your deck for the seasons that lie ahead. Whether your winter was mild or harsh, Mother Nature more than likely did a number on your deck over the last several months. So before you can throw your first bash, consider the following tips for cleaning your deck. • Be thorough: Winter throws all sorts of elements at your deck, so be prepared to put
in some elbow grease when cleaning. Algae, mildew and moss can turn a beautiful deck into a black-and-greenstained eyesore. Scrubbing will only do so much, so you’ll likely need a deck cleaner that removes such stains while simultaneously brightening your deck. Also, there are invisible factors that can affect a deck as well. For example, pressure-treated wood often falls victim to excess wax. While this is not necessarily detrimental to a deck, it can prevent adhesion should you attempt to apply a sealer to your deck before the season begins anew. A good cleaner will remove any excessive materials. • Strip the deck: Many people prefer a colored sealant on their deck to make it
Before you and your loved ones can enjoy your deck this season, your first need to restore and clean it.
more aesthetically appealing. However, stained decks often fade, creating a weathered look as opposed to a desired one. Once your deck starts to fade, simply applying a new stain won’t do the trick. First, you must strip the deck of its old stain. A number of stain and finish removers are on the market today, removing latex or oil finishes equally as well. A good stain or finish remover will also prepare the wood for reapplication. And though this might sound like quite an endeavor, it should not take very long to strip a deck once you’ve applied the remover. Oftentimes, a good product will work in less than 30 minutes. • Protect it for the upcoming seasons: Because spring rolls right into sum-
mer, once you’ve cleaned your deck you’ll want to protect it from the pounding it’s liable to take over the next several months. Whether or not you decide to stain (or re-stain) your deck, make sure you protect it with a water-repellent finish. This protects your deck from those spring showers and also allows you to freely water any plants or flowers you may have planted around the deck without fear of damaging the wood. This is also essential if your deck surrounds a pool where water puddles are unavoidable. A good water-repellent feature will also have anti-mildew properties. That’s important, as the warm months ahead are prime periods for mildew growth.
LEDs Save Homeowners Money
(MS) — Light-emitting diodes or LEDs are gaining popularity in current home lighting concepts because of their energy-efficient nature, among other benefits. Currently, LEDs are the unsung heroes of the electronics world. These small devices make up the numbers of digital clocks, send signals from remote controls and illuminate watches and other small appliances. LEDs have been around since the 1960s, but weren’t widely used for sources of illumination for a long time because they could not produce white light, only red, green and yellow. In 1993, Nichia Chemical of Japan changed all that when it started producing blue LEDs, which, combined with red and green, produce white light. Today, LEDs are recognized as practical solutions to home lighting needs, par-
ticularly for those who are interested in efficient, cost-effective illumination. Unlike ordinary incandescent light bulbs containing a filament that can burn out, LEDs are illuminated by the movement of electrons within a semiconductor. They last long, don’t burn out and don’t get very hot when used. Additionally, because they are essentially very small light bulbs, they can be used in all sorts of lighting applications. Current white LEDs will last up to 50,000 hours, about 50 times as long as a 60-watt bulb. That can equal a dura-
tion of almost six years if the LEDs are on constantly. Because they don’t have to be changed as frequently as traditional bulbs, LEDs are very practical for hard-to-reach illumination, such as on the outside of buildings or in swimming pools. But their long-lasting properties are not the only advantage of LEDs. Although they have a higher up-front cost than incandescent or even fluorescent bulbs, LEDs are more cost-efficient in the long run. The U.S. Department of Energy has estimated that LED lighting could cut national energy con-
sumption for lighting by 29 percent by 2025. That could equal more than $100 billion in savings on electric bills for homeowners. As LED research continues and their production costs decrease, one may even see an increased use in their home application. Because the different colors of light emitted from LEDs can be manipulated to create just about any color of the rainbow, creative homeowners may think of the aesthetics involved with these lights as well as the efficiency. Sliding switches similar to dimmer switches may change the color of the lights instead of the intensity of the bulbs. This could open up possibilities for enhancing a home with colorful accents. Just think of warm tones to make a room seem more cozy, or blues to cool off a room during a hot day.

Tips for upgrading bathrooms Oftentimes one of the smallest rooms in the house, the bathroom can easily be overlooked when designing for maximum light flow and style in the home. “Bathrooms are a private place, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be bright and welcoming,” says home improvement expert Don Zeman. “Many homeowners view the bathroom as their private retreat, so it’s important to pay attention to these rooms with upgrades like enhanced lighting, ultra-quiet ventilation systems and designer sinks.” Zeman, who was a contractor for 25 years before starting his nationally synThe obscure acrylic blocks in this window prodicated radio show vide privacy and natural light for the bathroom “Homefront with Don setting. You can ensure that your caulking bead is straight and even with this simple trick: Use masking tape to tape off the areas around the area in which you are caulking, keeping the two pieces of tape at a distance the size of the desired bead.
Lay down your bead of caulk. Use your finger to tool the caulk by pushing the excess onto the tape. After tooling, you can remove the masking tape and you’ll find a very nice looking, straight, clean, smooth bead of tooled caulk.

Make your home Wheelchair Accessible Wheelchairs are a part of life for many people. Injuries or the natural aging process can make wheelchairs a necessity at some point. Those confined to a wheelchair oftentimes find themselves unable to get around their own homes, since many homes weren’t designed with wheelchairs in mind. Fortunately, there are a number of low-cost and little-work modifications you can make to your home to make it more wheelchair accessible. * Remove any loose carpeting or rugs. Whether you have a manual or electricpowered wheelchair, it is easy to get caught on any carpeting that might not be as secure as it once was. Similarly, rugs will more than likely get caught in your wheels. Simply removing these and replacing your carpet with new carpet that fits more snugly to the floor is a good way to make getting around a lot easier. * Replace your door knobs with levers. This will make getting in and out of your house as well as in and out of any rooms far less stressful. Door knobs can be difficult for a wheelchair-bound person to turn, but a lever can simply be pushed down and in to make access to the room easier. This is precisely the reason you’ll notice all hospital rooms have lever handles as opposed to knobs. * Install mini ramps on high door thresholds. Since many door thresholds can be high off the ground, getting a wheelchair over these thresholds can be difficult. By gluing or sealing down a few tiny wedges of wood or metal, you’re essentially making a mini ramp that will help you get in and out of your home sans help. * Install grab bars in your bathroom. Requiring help maneuvering in the bathroom can be embarrassing and one of the hardest parts of wheelchair life. You can install grab bars in your bathroom that should allow you to use the bathroom by yourself. These bars will stabilize you as you move from your wheelchair to your toilet and from the bathtub to your wheelchair and vice versa. All wheelchair-accessible public restrooms have these bars, so if you have the time, check them out to see how you can best place them around your bathroom. It is also important to note that many household doorways are too narrow for wheelchairs to fit through, so they will need to be widened. This, however, is a job best done by a professional. * Install a nonslip floor in your bathroom. Bathroom floors tend to get wet, becoming a danger for anyone, regardless of accessibility. Making your floor nonslip will greatly reduce the chances of you or your wheelchair slipping when you’re transferring from your chair to the tub or vice versa. Consider flooring tiles that are nonslip, or a durable, low-pile carpeting. * Install automatic sink fixtures. Motion-detecting sink fixtures can make operating your sink an easy process. With motion-detecting fixtures, all you need to do is place your hands under the faucet and wait for the water to come on. This negates having to reach for the sink handles. installing a pedestal sink. This reduces the amount of counterspace you’ll need to clear and opens up your bathroom even further. * Install a hose or nozzle in your shower. These can be beneficial (and easy to install) in a number of ways. A hose or nozzle system is essentially a moving shower head, meaning you won’t have to twist and turn when rinsing yourself off. Secondly, many of these nozzles have different settings, some of which perform massaging functions, which can help sooth body parts that might be aching or sore from sitting in your wheelchair or as a result of the rigors of getting around. These are also easily installed in most showers, making them an easy way to make one of life’s everyday chores more enjoyable and relaxing. * Remove gravel driveways and walkways. This can be done easily by a professional or someone who’s done it before. Gravel driveways and sidewalks make it difficult to get around. Installing a paved driveway is relatively easy and inexpensive. * Move your mailbox to make it more accessible. If your mailbox is at the end of your driveway or even attached to your house at chest level, you’ll want to move it closer to your front door and lower it to a level you can easily reach from your wheelchair. Also, you might want to consider a mail slot in your front door, but this might create problems when entering your home as you try and get yourself and your chair around your mail without rolling over it. * Buy a cordless or cellular phone. With a cordless or cellular phone, you won’t have to hurry into another room when the phone rings. Keep the phone nearby whenever you’re in the house to remove extra stress.
