HOLIDAY SPIRIT – In the spirit of giving, the Yorkton Nursery School Cooperative children, staff, and families, collected non perishable food items to donate to the Salvation Army.
Area rinks get needed funding boosts
For the second consecutive year, hundreds of local Saskatchewan rinks have taken advantage of the Community Rink Affordability Grant. The Government of Saskatchewan announced it invested nearly $1.6 million in 520 facilities in 362
communities through the grant. “Local rinks provide significant sport and recreational opportunities to people living in both small towns and city neighbourhoods,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Kevin Doherty comments.
“That’s why we promised to support rinks in the 2011 election, and that’s why we’re happy to invest in them through the Community Rink Affordability Grant for the second year in a row. Rinks enhance the vibrant quality of life we enjoy here in our grow-
ing province.” The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association administered and delivered the grant. “The amount of positive feedback the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association has received since first deliv-
ering this grant in 2012 is overwhelming,” Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association President Mike Powell adds. “We’ve heard from people directly involved with local rinks that the funds are helping. They’re allowing rink owners to hire
caretakers, keep the rinks open longer, and repair and upgrade facilities.” The $2,500 per indoor ice surface grant helps communities, non-profits, schools, rink boards and First Nations communities keep their rinks open and running efficiently.

Healthy New Year resolutions
With a brand new year starting, it’s a great time and a wonderful opportunity to stand back and ask yourself: “What can I change or do better in my life to improve my health?” IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM
Perhaps you would like to quit smoking, drink more water, clean up your diet, overcome a health challenge, cleanse or exercise regularly. Whatever you want to accomplish, identify the problem as specifically as you can. Half of the solution to any problem is to define it, so that it can be resolved properly. BURN YOUR BRIDGES Make a solid commitment to yourself to achieve your goals and do not turn back. If necessary, get rid of the things that allow you to give up easily. For example, if you are going to quit smoking, throw out all the ashtrays, matches and lighters. Have you heard the story about the general who took his army by ship to conquer another country? After seeing the enemy, his soldiers thought they would lose the battle and wanted to return home. However, the general had ordered all their ships to be burned and told his army that there was no choice... They had to win! BELIEVE IT’S POSSIBLE In order to do something, you must believe you can succeed. Napoleon Hill, a great success philosopher, stated: “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” This quote has helped countless individuals achieve their goals. Tell yourself you can do it! Do not allow “I can’t” to be a part of your vocabulary, at all! It is very important to have positive thoughts. Do not entertain negative thoughts, whatsoever! You have not failed until you quit trying! MEASURE AND CONTROL Set a goal that is measurable, so that you know how you are doing. If
MANAGING THE WORLD’S MOST IMPORTANT INVESTMENTS: YOURS!
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION by Dr. Gail Smolinski DNM® www.drgail.ca you want to lose weight, for example, decide how many pounds you will lose in a certain amount of time, for example, 12 pounds in three months. It must be a goal that you can control, not one that someone else controls. You can change your own behavior, not somebody else’s. MAKE A PLAN You’ve heard the saying: Plan your work and work your plan. Write your goal down on paper, outlining exactly what you want to achieve. Include dates and numbers, if applicable. You will do much better with a definite plan and time frame. Break down your overall goal into achievable steps. Take one step at a time. This is less overwhelming than trying to tackle a larger problem all at once.
TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES Be accountable! Tell someone your goal, someone who can look over your shoulder and check up on you every day. If you do not do your part, it should cost you something. For instance, if you dare to skip your exercise for the day, there has to be a consequence. You need to decide what this consequence will be ahead of time, when you define your New Year’s resolution. How serious a consequence this will be is up to you.

PROGRAM IT IN This step is all-important. Program the required activities into your daily life, so that you do not depend on willpower. Willpower comes and goes. Treat this like a business decision. For instance, if your goal is to exercise daily, set a specific time to exercise, write it into your agenda and keep your exercise appointments. You would not likely stand anybody else up, if that person is important to you. Do not stand yourself up. You are just as important! Show up for your own appointments! Set up your lifestyle to support your health goals. Do not leave any room in your life for failure. KEEP TRACK

We learn new lessons each day of our lives, and often we as adults do not think we learn much from children. Children learn from play, and we as adults often do not see this as a learning event. We associate learning by use of books, writing, or media that provides learning, not with play time. Children learn from each other and from all they see and hear. We as adults need to be careful what we say and what we don’t say in the presence of our young family members. This past week I learned a few lessons from our three year old grandson. We took him shopping at the mall. Children often repeat what they have heard, and often they say what they think; without much thought put into their conversation. Children usually say what comes to mind. As we were going to the mall we saw a snow-

man, and I asked our grandson “what do you see? He instantly said it was a snow man. I asked, “Is the snowman real?” and he said, “Well he is real now, but when the sun comes out, and it gets warm he turns to water, then the snowman is no longer real. The next image before us was a Santa. Again I asked the same question, “What do you see?” He replied “A Santa.” I asked him, “Is Santa real?” and our three year old grandson said, “No, he’s not real, he is just wearing a Santa suit, and when he takes off his suit he no longer is Santa, he is just

pretend, and sometimes it is OK to pretend. As we were walking through the mall looking at all the decorations and went into a few stores and did some of our shopping. He enjoyed all the stores with children’s toys and we got a few things he wanted. It appeared to us he was in his own world with the toys we purchased and with all the decorations in the store windows. On the way out of the mall our grandson said “Stop, here is Christmas” I did not see what he did. Against the wall, on the floor and at his level was a Christmas display

including all the images we recall in Christmas Story. He said, “Here are Baby Jesus and Mary and Joseph and the wise people and the sheep.” I asked him is this really Christmas?” He looked at me with questionable eyes and said, “YES this is real, and this is Christmas.” So many adults want to take Christ out of Christmas. They want to be politically correct and want to be so inclusive that they miss the point of why we even celebrate Christmas. Lessons from children often are hard for us to swallow. I know I had a tear in my eye when our grandson pointed this out to us, “This is Christmas.” A child of three has the wisdom of an adult. Another lesson learned – Christ is what Christmas is all about! Sometimes we get so caught up in the shopping, giving gifts and going to parties that we

miss the real reason of the season. It is important to remember that the reason we go out to celebrate, and to give gifts during the Christmas season – is to celebrate the birth of the Christ Child. This year let it be a reminder from a three year old child – to keep Christ in Christmas. At Christmas there is a song in the air that lifts our spirit. May this spirit dwell in our hearts all year long.

Healthy New Year resolutions Con’t from Page 2.
Choose something that will motivate you to keep your commitment faithfully. PLAN FOR SUCCESS To summarize, identify your health goal very specifically, and determine to persevere. Pick a resolution that you can control and measure. Believe that it is possible to achieve. Write down your plan, breaking up the total goal into achievable steps. Then, rearrange your life, so that you will succeed, not having to depend on willpower. When willpower is sagging, the structure in your daily life must be able to carry you through. Keep track of your progress and be accountable,
suffering the pre-planned consequence if and when you decide to slack. Plan to win, prepare to win and expect to win! In order to help you achieve your health goals, I am pleased to offer my New Year’s health program, called “Dr. Gail’s GOOD, BETTER, BEST - DAILY NUTRITION PROGRAMS” Visit my website or call me for details.
