CA$H BAC K FOR CHRISTMAS

A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS – The students of the YNSC (Yorkton Nursery School Cooperative) recently collected pennies for the Free the Children Foundation. They collected 11 bags which amounted to $275.00 in pennies! Above they are pictured with their donation.

Sask. communities benefit gaming grants More than 700 groups and organizations across the province – including in Yorkton and area – will receive more than $1.2 million in charitable gaming grants from the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA). “These groups and organizations work hard to better

their communities through their volunteer efforts,” Minister responsible for SLGA Donna Harpauer comments. “Our government is pleased to assist the efforts of these volunteers by providing funding through the charitable gaming grant program.” Among the grants provided

Sask. in the lead

For the first time ever, Saskatchewan exported more than $11 billion in agri-food products in 2012, and remains the nation’s top agri-food exporter. In total, Saskatchewan accounted for 23 per cent of Canada’s agri-food exports in 2012. “Saskatchewan farmers and ranchers continue to provide safe, reliable and high quality agri-food products here at home and around the world,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart says. “Our government continues to invest in areas such as market development and research to create opportunities for our producers to increase our agriculture exports in the future.” The Saskatchewan Plan for Growth includes a goal to increase agri-food exports to $15 billion by 2020. The record $11.1 billion in 2012 agri-food exports is an increase of nine per cent over 2011, and an increase of 75 per cent since 2007, representing a significant step in achieving this goal. Agriculture continues to have a major impact on the province’s economy, accounting for over one third of all provincial exports. Canola seed continues to be the top agri-food export at $2.7 billion in 2012. Canola seed exports have increased 25 per cent since last year and 215 per cent since 2007. Other top agri-food exports in 2012 included wheat ($2 billion), canola oil ($1.7 billion), durum ($1.2 billion) and lentils ($673 million). “We have been able to expand opportunities for producers to grow existing and emerging markets like India and China thanks to several trade missions where agriculture featured prominently,” Minister responsible for Trade Tim McMillan adds. “We will continue our work to secure improved access and ensure Saskatchewan’s agri-food exports benefit from the growing demand in these markets.” Saskatchewan agri-food products have a larger reach than ever before, providing the majority of the mustard found in France’s Dijon mustard products, the majority of the oats in Cheerios cereal and the majority of the world’s entire trade of peas and canary seed. The top five markets for Saskatchewan agriculture products are the United States, China, Japan, Mexico and India. In 2012, 18 countries each purchased more than $100 million in Saskatchewan agri-food exports, making Saskatchewan agriculture one of the most significant providers of food around the world.

Runoff above the norm Saskatchewan’s Water Security Agency recently released the February forecast and first outlook of the spring runoff and with the snowfall received this winter, an above normal runoff is expected. “The spring runoff is impacted by a variety of factors like moisture conditions in the fall, snow accumulation in the winter as well as the rate of melt and amount of rainfall in the spring,” Minister responsible for Water Security Agency Ken Cheveldayoff says. “The Water Security Agency is paying close attention to these factors and will assess the situation as we approach spring.” The last half of 2012 saw below normal rainfall which left most of the agricultural areas in Saskatchewan with relatively dry conditions going into the winter season. To date, there has been above normal winter precipitation and well above average water equivalent in the snowpack for this time of year. If the precipitation conditions going forward remain the same as their historical averages, there will be an above average spring

runoff this year. The February forecast should be used as a general guide as local conditions may vary. The full February forecast is available online at www. wsask.ca. The Water Security Agency will be updating this forecast in March with the best available information. Since 2010, the Water Security Agency has invested over $25 million in flood mitigation efforts to more than 1,400 individuals, communities, rural municipalities and First Nations. The Water Security Agency was created to lead implementation of the 25 Year Saskatchewan Water Security Plan.

Mistakes: easy or biting Some doubt that the baby born of the Virgin Mary is Christ, the Lord. Will it be a mistake that hounds them

Neighborly Advice According to Ed

eternally? The Bible says it this way, ”God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”

by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com Ed, my neighbor next door, has a saying. “It’s alright to talk about the mistakes of others, for they won’t be mentioning them.” He was quick to tell me that I shouldn’t be working overnight shifts in December. “It is a mistake, as you’ll mix up your days and nights. You will fall asleep on the job and while driving to and from work,” Ed insisted. Through the years, I have found it best to act as if Ed is always right. Besides, he often says that he doesn’t make mistakes, but a few people haven’t been smart enough to know that. I have had the opposite experience in life. More often than not, it will take me a few tries to get anything right. My track record has been about fifty – fifty. As a kid, I often had my boots on the wrong feet, had t-shirts inside out, got way too much glue on stuff, lost library books and made any number of mistakes of every kind and size. One particular mistake I made as a child was thinking storebought was much better than homemade. Every Christmas, my grandmother would give me a hand-knitted sweater. I was mistaken about her gift. I thought it was an awful gift. Who wanted a sweater for Christmas? I sure didn’t. All my grandmother’s hours of knitting a sweater for me were wasted on me. I was too foolish to understand that her gift to me was her work and time given in mak-

ing the sweater. It took me a lot of years before I realized how wrong I had been about my gifts of Christmas sweaters. What we were once so certain about, we may later realize we were blindly mistaken about. Mistakes may go unnoticed and may be of little consequence. They can also be like the repeated biting of a guard dog. Some mistakes won’t lie down and leave us alone – they come back to hound us. Once I made a mistake driving, when I didn’t see an oil tanker coming and turned out in front of it. The tanker sent my car and me flying into space and time. My car was destroyed and I was reminded of my mistake with every car payment I made for a replacement car for several years. When God gave the gift of His Son, Jesus, born at Bethlehem, few were even aware of the gift given. It was easy for people to dismiss Joseph and Mary as just two ordinary people. Most did not know Mary had found favor with God and that the child she gave birth to was to be called Jesus. The Holy Spirit had come upon her and the power of the Most High had overshadowed her. So the baby born by her would be called the Son of God. The angel Gabriel told Mary that nothing is impossible with God. Mary believed what the Lord told her through the angel Gabriel. Shepherds also believed when an angel told them that a Savior had been born to them, Christ, the Lord.

It’s Teacher Week! In recognition of Saskatchewan teachers and support staff, Education Minister Russ Marchuk proclaimed the week of February 10-17, 2013 as Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week. “We have phenomenal teachers working here in Saskatchewan. I have seen great things happening in classrooms across the province and heard impressive stories about teachers who really are making a difference in the lives of students,” Marchuk says. “We need to take opportunities like Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week to highlight and thank our teachers and support staff for their hard work and dedication.

They all play integral roles in the success of our students.” Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is recognized nationally by the Canadian Home and School Federation as a way to recognize the personal and professional contributions that teachers and school staff make to children and their education. Marking the 26th consecutive year, this year the Saskatchewan Association of School Councils will celebrate the theme “Inspiring Success” to highlight the teacher-student relationship and the positive impact teachers and school staff have on a student’s academic success.

Farming leads the way with technological advances After 36 years of farming, Jim Gowland says he’s seen the industry go through an incredible evolution. Today, he’s unequivocal in his feelings about the current state of agriculture in Canada: “It’s probably one of the most vibrant industries on the face of the earth right now,” he says and points to a similar enthusiasm among his fellow crop farmers. Gowland, who grows more than 2,000 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat, is a strong advocate for technology. He’s been using GPS and auto-steer technology for at least five years. He also grows biotech corn and employs pesticides when necessary. “These are tools that we use to maintain plant health and eliminate stresses so our crops can be more successful,” he says. cent of the corn Gowland has planted has been genetically modified. He says biotechnology has proved to be an invaluable tool in the battle against weeds and diseases. “We wouldn’t do it any other way now,” he confirms. Gowland adds that biotech crops and non-biotech crops can actually complement each other. In his fields he rotates between biotech corn and non biotech soybeans. The biotech corn crop actually helps reduce the weeds in the field so the soybean crop can be more successful. Gowland says technologies like pesticides and plant biotechnology help farmers control the risks that are inherently part of farming, “Biotechnology, for example, can help crops make better use of nutrients and water.” He is excited about
