Canora park cashes in It’s taken a dedicated community effort but persistence and dedication has paid off. The Aviva Community fund has announced the Chase Kraynick “Pay It Forward” Splash Park is the Grand Prize Broker winner of $90,000 meaning the park can now go ahead. Many have heard the story and jumped in in support of the cause and finally it’s all come together. In 2011, the Canora Junior Elementary School took on the task of spreading the idea of “Paying it Forward” within the community. They taught their students the concept by and handing out Pay it Forward cards to each student asking them to think about ways to use them. Chase Kraynick was just six years old when he came home with his card and he was constantly think-

The Town of Canora is donating the land where the park will be built, the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the park for an indefinite period of time, as well as a substantial financial contribution towards the project. The Aviva win ensures the dream will become a reality. The Aviva Community Fund started in 2009 as a way of giving back to the communities. Whether it was shoveling the neighbor’s driveway in the winter or opening doors for others, Chase’s heart was so full of love and goodness to share. In May of 2011 at the age of six, Chase was tragically taken from his family in a farming accident. His family’s way of paying it forward in memory of Chase is to build a splash park in Canora. This splash park will be a place where friends and family of any age will be able to engage in healthy, barrier free fun while creating memories to last a lifetime. This park will

Invermay gets set for change

It may not be an easy process, but it’s necessary. The Sunrise Health Region (SHR) has announced repairs required at Invermay Health Center will necessitate temporary suspension of visiting health services and temporary relocation of the long-term care residents to health facilities in neighbouring communities. The decisions were made following the recent discovery of some structural

damage and presence of mould. “Experts from the Ministries of Health, as well as Labour Relations and Workplace Safety, advise that there are no immediate health concerns stemming from the mould discovered in the facility,” says Sunrise Health Region CEO Suann Laurent. “We do want to address the problem quickly. Invermay Health Centre slated for changes Con’t from Page 1.

“The required remediation work will cause significant noise and disruption and cannot be safely carried out with residents and staff in the building. Options for temporary relocation are being discussed individually with the long-term care residents and their families.” The relocation of longterm care residents and staff is temporary, with the move back to Invermay anticipated as soon as the remediation work is complete and the facility is deemed safe. Work is expected to begin as soon as the last resident and staff are out of the building. During the afternoon of Thursday, January 17, 2013, staff at Invermay Health Centre noticed that the floor was sloping in the west corner of the west wing. Bracing was put into place, the long-term care residents were moved from the west wing to another part of the building, and the wing was sealed off. Experts in air quality testing and structural engineering were called. Tests indicated presence of mould. Equipment was installed to improve the air quality until the source of the problem is identified and corrected. Visiting services which also use the building will be temporarily suspended, effec-

tive immediately. These include scheduled visits from physiotherapy, mental health and dietitian services, and the weekly physician clinic, laboratory collections and outpatient treatments. People in the community are being asked to make alternate arrangements with their pharmacy and family physician. Alternate arrangements will ensure that the “meals on wheels” program continues. “The needs of our longterm care residents and their families will continue to drive our planning through this difficult time,” Laurent says. “The health, safety and comfort of our long-term care residents are our priority.” The long-term care residents, family members and staff were personally contacted and then met as a group on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Invermay Health Centre. The Chairperson of Sunrise Health Region, CEO and senior leadership team, the medical health officer, the area public health inspector, SUN and CUPE union representatives and a representative from the Village of Invermay were in attendance. The health region and unions are coordinating continued employment of Invermay Health Centre staff in alternate locations during the tempo-

Annual night ski event slated Article and photo submitted by: Rob Wilson on behalf of Good Spirit Cross Country Ski Club Friend of The Good Spirit Cross Country Ski Club. Ski in the dark? Are you serious? Yes we Are. Are you one of those cross country skiers who has contemplated a night ski? Alternatively, would you like to TRY cross country skiing and attempt that ski at night? If the answer to either question is “yes” you just might want to spend the evening of Saturday, February 16 as a participant in The Good Spirit Cross Country’s 3rd Annual Lamplighter Loppet. Our loppet is the only night loppet held in Canada. Here is your chance to participate in a unique event right at your back door – or should we say – right on your back trails. There are a few prerequisites to your participation. Because our club is

providing snacks and entertainment, we certainly want you to preregister prior to Feb. 10. We want to have sufficient supplies to treat you right! You can obtain necessary forms and more information, including directions, by going to the ski club’s website at www. goodspiritski.blogspot.ca or by contacting the club’s Loppet Coordinator, Anne Stupak, at 1-306-7836617 or 621-8926 (Anne resides in Yorkton). To be part of our event you MUST sign-in at The Recreation Hall at Good Spirit Provincial Park prior to the mass start at

6:30 p.m. Participants must be OFF the trails by 10:00 p.m. You MUST have a headlamp. Pre-registering and sign-in are necessary “housekeeping” tasks. Consider more pleasant aspects. You will be warmly welcomed at both The Recreation Hall and at The Ski Shelter. You will meet new people. You will have an opportunity to make new friends – friends who share your love of skiing. Fresh air and exercise will be yours for the taking. Most importantly you will smile and laugh. The cost is $25.00/per-

son or $65.00 if you make it a family activity. If you are not a member of the club, consider taking a membership prior to entering The Lamplighter Loppet, as members-ingood-standing enjoy discounted rates. Wax on… wax off.

Pension money is too important to waste Ed, my neighbor next door, is currently on a crusade to save me from myself. When Ed heard I was taking an online college course that costs good money, he choked on his coffee. He is sure that to do such a foolish thing my common sense is either frozen or gone south. Ed stammered out his cynical disbelief with the words, “School is bad enough when you are forced to go as a kid, but to pay to go to school as a senior is just plain crazy. It is the same as you buying yourself a baby buggy to ride in – you don’t need it or a college course in your sixties.” When I told Ed I really liked my college course and would be taking more in the future, he kind of panicked and tried to suggest some sane and reasonable ways for me to spend my retirement. He invited me to go ice fishing with him and suggested we could both sign up for the slot tournament at the casino in Yorkton. Ed’s concern is that I could become even stranger than I already am. If I’m foolish enough to waste my money now, will I know any better in my seventies, eighties or nineties? I told Ed that his concern for my welfare was almost touching, but I

by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com needed to waste my pension money as I see fit. Now, Ed is avoiding me because he does not want to hear anything about my wasteful, college course. It is not easy to please, a neighbor, for invariably you do something they consider a colossal waste of time and money. You can only hope they’ll like you anyway and I have found an odd time they do. Some people watched Jesus thinking that his actions were a waste of time only to find they became miracles. Jesus went to a wedding at Cana in Galilee. A problem arose because the wine was gone, but the wedding was not over. Jesus’ mother asked him to help and told the servants to do whatever Jesus asked them to do. Jesus had the servants fill with water six stone water jars used by Jews for their ceremonial washing. They held twenty to thirty gallons each. After they had filled

the water jars to the brim, Jesus told them to draw some water out and take it to the master of the banquet. It must have seemed like a waste of time for the servants who knew they had just filled the jars with water. Yet, when the master of the banquet tasted it, he said to the bridegroom, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now. Many things that others do can strike us as a waste of time, but we have a limited ability when it comes to seeing what is beneficial and what isn’t. It seems nothing, not even a miracle, can change our opinion on what is a waste of time. Yet, thankfully, God is the master of turning our thinking inside out and upside down to let us know that some of the things we do are also a waste of our time.

Youth summit opportunity If you are a youth and you care about the earth, read on. Since launching the global 4-H Youth Ag-Summit website in December 2012, applications from young adults between the ages of 18-25 have been coming in globally from Nova Scotia to Tokyo. They are all vying for the opportunity to ‘come to the table’ on August 19th to 25th, 2013 for the global 4-H Youth Ag-Summit in Calgary, Alberta to share ideas and develop a plan of action on how to feed a hungry planet. From now until February 15, 2013, young adults between the ages of 18-25 have the chance to submit an application by writing an essay (max. 2,000 words) or filming a video (max. seven minutes) about the challenges of feeding a hungry planet. One hundred and twenty of the successful applicants will receive an expenses-paid trip to the global 4-H Youth Ag-Summit – a week long event where ideas will be shared and opportunities will be explored with other young people, business leaders and scientists about this global agricultural challenge. One revolutionary idea could make history. Bayer CropScience is the title sponsor of the Youth Ag-Summit and is committed to inspiring youth from around the world to see how they can make a difference and bring

agriculture to the forefront of this global challenge. Countries currently involved include Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, Tanzania, United Kingdom and USA. In November 2011, the United Nations declared the planet’s population surpassed seven billion people. In less than 40 years this forecast will see two billion more mouths in need of healthy food and nutrition. If the next generation is to help find a solution for these people, they must first understand the challenges and opportunities their peers are experiencing around the world today. No one person, company or nation holds the answers; but through discussion and collaboration at the global 4-H Youth Ag-Summit in Calgary, it is hoped that agricultural solutions can be found, acted upon and achieved. Forty youth from across Canada will be selected to participate in this event. 20 of these participants will be 4-H members and/or 4-H alumni. Young adults between the ages of 18-25 (at the time of the conference) can find out more details and apply online by visiting www. YouthAgSummit.com
