Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Health advises the public to avoid swimming and other in-water recreational activities in lakes and rivers that have been significantly impacted by flooding. “Testing was initiated to see whether water quality has been affected by the flooding that has occurred,” Director of Environmental Health for the Ministry of Health Tim Macaulay says. “Water samples taken in various locations have shown that high levels of harmful bacteria (E.coli) have entered into water bodies. It is recommended that residents avoid flood waters at this time, including refraining from water contact sports and taking care not to drink or bathe in the water.” Water testing occurred at the following lakes on Thursday, July 3: Last Mountain, Echo, Pasqua and Katepwa. The results indicated the presence of elevated levels of harmful bacteria. Sampling is currently taking place on water from Crooked Lake and Round Lake, and similar results are expected. Precautions should be taken at other lakes that have been heavily affected by flooding. Residents with cabins near the flood impacted areas are also advised not to use water that may be pumped in directly from nearby water bodies. The situation will continue to evolve as flood waters peak and recede, and other lakes may also be affected. This general advisory will remain in effect until flood waters recede and water quality has improved. Flooding has covered many beaches in the province with debris, littering many lakes and rivers. The public is urged to use caution when considering recreational activities of any kind on or around flood water. People who experience adverse health effects (such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea or stomach cramps) after recreational water activity should consult a medical professional. Those who have health-related questions about water quality can call HealthLine 811 or contact their local health region.

Chamber pushes for change – airport in need of attention By SHANNON DEVEAU N-R Writer Changes are needed when it comes to the operation of Yorkton’s airport say directors of the local Chamber of Commerce and it’s up to the city to lead the charge. Juanita Polegi, Executive Director of the Chamber spoke at council Monday, bringing up concerns and possible solutions to move the airport forward in a more positive direction. “For the past few years, the Board of Directors of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce has listed the development of the Yorkton
Dog Park location selected – Jaycee Beach By SHANNON DEVEAU N-R Writer In spite of the reservations of Councillor Ross Fisher, Yorkton City Council members have voted in favor of setting up the city’s first off leash dog park at Jaycee Beach. Karen Kulaway Dunlop and Cathie Newans, both members of a local dog park committee, were on hand at Monday evenings regular meeting of council to seek approval for the location and to provide an update of progress. The committee has been busy at work fund raising to meet a goal of raising $13,000 to help create the

HYUNDAI FOR HABITAT – Yorkton Hyundai has come through for the third year in a row for Habitat for Humanity. This year’s car is a 2014 Hyundai Accent sedan, and all money raised for ticket sales will go to the future Habitat builds in the area. Pictured above are Tom Seeley with Habitat for Humanity, Ron Kaban, Dealer Principal at Yorkton Hyundai and Roger Freeburn, district sales manager for Hyundai Auto Canada. “The goal is to put people in homes,” says Freeburn, who adds that Hyundai is glad to support Habitat with the car each year. Seeley says that the next build will be in 2015, with the faith build involving area churches being the most likely start. The draw has raised over $50,000 in the past two years, and tickets are available wherever the car is displayed as well as at Yorkton Hyundai.
College helps Crops of the Parkland grow Parkland College is pleased to be participating in a familiar tourist attraction along Highway 9 in Yorkton. This year, the College is partnering with East Central Research Foundation and Tourism Yorkton on the greatly expanded Crops of the Parkland demonstration site. The Crops of the Parkland display includes a series of plots illustrating the range of crops grown in Saskatchewan’s Parkland region. The site also demonstrates some modern agricultural practices. “Visitors are able to walk around the site, look at the various crops growing, and contrast the effects of fertilizer, seed treatment, and herbicides on treated and untreated plots,” says Gwen Machnee, University and Applied Research
Coordinator at Parkland College. Signs providing basic information are posted at each set of plots. QR codes will be added soon, which will allow visitors to interact with the plots more in depth. Visitors will be able to scan the codes with their smartphones, linking them to websites for more detailed information. Guided tours with Parkland College’s summer student, Ashley Zelinski, can also be arranged. Use of the land is provided by the City of Yorkton. Parkland College research scientist and instructor Mike Hall and agronomist Thom Weir sourced all of the seed, mostly by donation from local seed companies. This project was funded by Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincial initiative.
CROPS OF THE PARKLAND is growing in several ways, with the Parkland College, East Central Research Foundation and Tourism Yorkton partnering to give the attraction more information, technology, and crops.
“VISIT US AT 160 BROADWAY ST. E., YORKTON”
Ed, my neighbor next door, tends to take bad circumstances, as well as, the good ones in a futile manner. One of his frequent sayings is, “Don’t be quick to say thanks for anything or anyone, as you never know how valuable or worthless they may turn out to be.” Life according to Ed is like a see-saw ride which always goes up and down endlessly. He says that the year your harvest is up to a bumper crop, it will be brought down by a giveaway price per bushel when you go to sell your grain. He admits that there are lots of great things that happen in a person’s life, but also enough miserable events to cancel the good, so it is best to wait and see rather than waste your thanks. The recent flood and evacuation of the nursing home here resulted in Ed and I having a lengthy discussion about thankfulness. Ed said that the flood proved it was both a waste of time to pray to God or say thank you to God. I replied that a thank you had to be said to the countless volunteers who were ready and willing to sandbag or help at the Credit Union Center. I was thankful that during the situation, so many folks worked tirelessly to the benefit of everyone and that I was thankful for the good city we live in. I felt the folks at city hall acted in an excellent response to a natural disaster, and deserved our thanks as well. Ed was certain I will not be thankful for city hall
Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com when I have to pay my taxes. I told him that I would be thankful when I get my taxes paid as it means we have a home to live in rather than being homeless as too many folks are in our world. Ed challenged me that he doubted the homeless are thankful. I argued that perhaps they are more thankful for shelter from bad weather when they can find refuge than we might ever be in our comfortable homes. We may take our homes for granted instead of with thankfulness. A devastating flood may displace people and destroy properties and crops, but it can help us to be thankful for the majority of the time, when we are flood free. Perhaps only, when highways are closed or washed away, do we remember how easily we
can travel our highways without difficulty? Scripture says give thanks in all situations meaning give thanks in good, bad, and awful circumstances. It is God’s will for us to not be anxious about anything, but in everything let our requests be made to God. This thanking and praying to God may not lower the flood water or lesson the damage or dislocation, but it will give us the peace Christ to rule our hearts. Prayer and thanks to God confirm that we believe God is good and his steadfast love endures forever. We are to a large extent at the mercy of a flood. Many realize that a flood may be the reminder they need to honor God with thanks and prayer for his steadfast love which will flood our souls with peace.
