Ukraine bond builds

A Saskatchewan delegation led by Canora-Pelly area MP and Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz recently concluded a mission to Ukraine which was highlighted by the signing of an educational agreement, discussions with the business and investment communities, meetings with the heads of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic and Orthodox Churches and political leaders from across Ukraine. The delegation, comprised of representatives from Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) and members of the Saskatchewan-Ukraine Relations Advisory Committee (SURAC), Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Saskatchewan Provincial Council (UCC-SPC) made stops in Lviv, Chernivsti, IvanoFrankivsk, Kyiv and Donetsk. The mission builds on work completed on two other visits by Saskatchewan delegations in 2008 and 2010. “Saskatchewan and Ukraine have strong historical and cultural ties and are working to build a more robust economic relationship.” Krawetz says. “These visits allow us to better understand how Saskatchewan can play a role in the ongoing development of Ukraine.”

SIAST President Larry Rosea took part in the mission, as SIAST has established partnerships with technical institutes in Lviv, Kyiv and Ivano-Frankivsk. Krawetz said SIAST is helping Ukrainian Institutions strengthen governance structures. The institutions and SIAST began a partnership in 2009 to provide a service to Canadian employers and potential newcomers by ensuring that the technical and language skills of the potential newcomers match needs in the Canadian labour market. The delegation met with more than 45 business and investment leaders in Lviv and Kyiv to learn firsthand the challenges and opportunities for Saskatchewan companies. Krawetz also addressed the CanadaUkraine Chamber of Commerce stressing importance of the small-medium enterprise sector in building the Ukrainian economy. He also emphasized the importance of further cooperation with the European Union to develop key market areas, and the significance of concluding the proposed free trade agreement with Canada to expand the opportunities for future growth. The delegation also paid its respects to the victims and survivors of the Holodomor at the memorial in Kyiv. “Saskatchewan is the first province to recognize the Holodomor,” Krawetz says. “As we commemorate in November the 80th anniversary of this tragedy, it is critical that we reflect and remember those who experienced this horrific event.”

However, he went off 17 medications, lost 30 pounds and dramatically decreased his blood pressure. His blood sugar on Day 1, with medication, was 450. On Day 17, without medication, it was 200! At the end of the film, the following information is displayed: “If you are on insulin or oral hypoglycemics, do not try this approach without medical supervision. If you are not on any diabetic medication, oral hypoglycemics, or insulin, then we invite you to safely explore this option on your own. Reversing diabetes takes different lengths of time for different people.” In conclusion, I ask you: Is diabetes reversible? I think that, in many cases, it is. You decide!

By Week 4, her blood sugar dropped 291 points down to 109, without medication. Her total cholesterol dropped from 237 to 171. Pam, 62, had Type 2 Diabetes. Pam also stopped all her medications and lost 26 pounds. By Week 4, her blood sugar dropped 167 points, down to as low as 112, without medication. On Day 1, her blood pressure was 135/76. On Day 30, it was 120/64. She felt really good! Austin, 25, had Type 1 Diabetes. He lost 20 pounds and lowered his blood pressure. Austin dropped from 70 units of insulin per day, down to 5 units per day! He said: “This month has been really great for my body! I think my body has really been healed a lot. From what I see after this month, I’d see this as a potential cure for Type 1.” Henry, 68, had Type 2 Diabetes. He chose to leave on Day 17, since he no longer wanted to continue the program.

New device reduces unnecessary skin biopsies Melanoma survivor Kendra Roach wears her skin cancer scar as a “badge of honour”. However, she’s less than impressed with her other scars from more than a dozen biopsies that came back benign. “I have a red welt on my chest that will be visible on my wedding day,” she says, “and it’s also emotionally scarring.” Roach adds that she has now learned about a new technology that can detect skin cancer by a light ray rather than a knife slice. She also knows early detection is key. Patients have a 99 per cent chance of survival when melanoma is diagnosed early; in late stages, it falls to 15 per cent. Roach, 23, has become a sort of expert on skin excisions since getting her first biopsy at the age of 13. With a healthy covering of moles and a past love of tanning, she is a recipe for high-risk. Ever since, she’s had close to 20 moles removed and reviewed. All came back benign, except one last summer. She was driving and happened to look down at her leg where she was surprised to see a new mole. Sitting behind the wheel, both traffic and time stopped. “It showed up almost overnight and just didn’t seem right,” she explains. “It looked like a little dark mole, a bit raised, and it didn’t have unusual borders or discolouring.” A biopsy confirmed stage one melanoma so

Roach had the full area removed. She says she recently experienced a new diagnostic device called Verisante Aura (verisante.com/aura). It uses a light ray to help medical professionals make a biopsy decision in under a second. The tool, now available in Canada, was developed through partnerships with the BC Cancer A g e n c y, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, and the

University of British Columbia over a 10-year period. Testing for the device took place at the Skin Care Centre at Vancouver General Hospital over a six-year clinical study. The results published last year in a peer-reviewed journal showed that the tool had a 99 per cent success rate of finding skin cancer and the potential to reduce unnecessary biopsies by 50 to 100 per cent. “There were a lot of

moles on my face and other places where I didn’t want to have a scar,” adds Roach. “The device quickly identified them as benign and gave me peace of mind.” This new technology was able to measure lesions even on the side of her little finger because of its small probe that enables access to hard-to-reach areas of the human body. Biopsies are invasive, time consuming and sometimes unwarranted,

says Dr. Sheetal Sapra, an Oakville dermatologist who is using the device on patients. “Aura represents a paradigm shift by being the first device that provides an objective measurement,” the doctor points out. “It can help automate the current process of diagnosis by allowing rapid and accurate scanning of multiple skin lesions at a time while improving patient care.” www.newscanada.com

Protect your home against flooding Many homeowners are surprised to hear that water damage is the most common insurance claim. Water damage—often in the form of a flooded basement—can come out of nowhere and cause extensive damage to the house. “Once homeowners understand the most common types of insurance claims, they can take steps to guard against them,” says John Jenner, vice-president of marketing and communications at Western Financial Group. “Measures might include making sure their home insurance policy covers sewer backup, installing a sump pump, having properly installed drainage systems, or making sure that downspouts are sending water away from their home.” According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, there are many circumstances that can cause a flooded basement, including tree roots growing through cracks in the waterline, overloaded stormwater and sanitary sewer infrastructure, frozen pipes, vandals blocking lines

and more. To keep your home safe, practice the following guidelines: Have someone check on your house when you’re away When you leave home for more than three days, make sure you have someone come and check the premises. A flooded basement, leaky pipe, or a broken window can be devastating if it is not discovered immediately. Keep drains clear It may seem simple, but many homeowners need to be reminded to keep their basement drains clear of obstructions. That means moving large objects such as furniture and making sure the drain is not sitting under a layer of dirt or debris. In older houses, drains may need to be snaked to ensure they can do their job properly. Install a sump pump and backflow valves This will greatly reduce the frequency and severity of basement flooding. Backflow valves or plugs can be installed on

drains, toilets and other sewer connections to prevent water from entering the home. Move items that are in flooding prone areas The 10 minutes spent on inspecting your home for items that are in flooding prone areas could save hours later. Make sure you store important documents and irreplaceable personal items where they will not be
