– revenues/expenses over $75 million The Good Spirit School Division Board of Education recently passed its 2013/2014 budget. This year’s budget includes anticipated revenues and expenditures in excess of $75 million. “Our priority in terms of budgeting is to allocate resources to maintain current operations with a special focus on identified strategic plan priorities,” states Bryan Cottenie, Board Chair. “We are headed into year two of our five-year strategic plan and it is extremely important to ensure targeted investments reflect these goals.” “Transparency plays a key role in discussions and included numerous meetings with both senior administration as well as board members before determining the finalized budget,” adds Sherry Todosichuk, Superintendent of Business Administration. “Administration has taken the board directive that the budget include a defined focus on realigning resources so that areas such as staffing, supports for learning, and health and safety are targeted to ensure dollars meet identified needs.” Highlights of the 2013/2014 budget include the following: • Continued investment in literacy with expansion of resources available beyond the primary levels; • Appointment of a First Nations Metis Achievement Coordinator to work towards addressing improved capacity to work with First Nations people as well as improving student learning

Dealing with seasonal allergies SEASONAL ALLERGIES

I really enjoy this time of the year! However, for some people, summer allergies can become an everyday battle. But, you’ve heard the saying. The best defense is a good offense. WHAT ARE ALLERGIES?

An allergy is the immune system’s overactive response to a substance that is harmful to most people. A normal healthy immune system protects you against foreign substances that try to invade your body. If you have allergies, though, otherwise harmless substances, known as allergens, can cause your body to react as if they were dangerous invaders. Your immune system tries to protect you by producing large amounts of a specific antibody, according to the allergen. It releases inflammatory substances, such as histamine, into your system. These substances migrate to various parts of the body, causing allergy symptoms. For example, if they get into the respiratory system, they can cause a runny nose, itchy eyes and sneezing. The type and severity of allergy symptoms vary, depending on the allergen, where in the body the symptoms appear, how sensitive the individual is and how strong the reaction is. HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

Homeopathic remedies for allergies can save a lot of suffering. They work by helping to desensitize the body’s reactions to allergic substances. The homeopathic ingredients gently

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION by Dr. Gail Smolinski DNM® www.drgail.ca and safely expose the individual to minutely diluted allergens, in order to decrease the sensitivity and strengthen the weak areas. This allows our natural defenses to adapt to the allergens appropriately and no longer react adversely to them. Desensitizing the body with homeopathic remedies teaches the body to react less and less to the allergens with each season or exposure. INHALANT ALLERGIES Inhalant allergies can occur when airborne allergens, such as pollen or molds, affect the respiratory system. Inhalant nasal allergies can be very uncomfortable, causing symptoms similar to sinusitis or the common cold. Homeopathy is based on the principle that “like cures like”. If pollen is an offending allergen, for instance, then homeopathic pollen can remove the symptoms that the real allergen produces. In spring, outdoor molds, grasses and tree and flower pollens start to become more prevalent. This is when the homeopathic formula for inhalant allergies can be indispensable! This formula contains homeopathic preparations of various pollens, a flower and grass seed mixture, dried herbs, fungus, animal hair and house dust. You can see that this formula offers relief for quite a variety of allergy-caus-

ing offenders. It contains homeopathic epinephrine, which influences the hormones to protect against allergic symptoms. It also provides homeopathic histamine, to supply antihistamine effects. For desensitization, a person can take five drops of this remedy, once a day, starting at least one month before allergy season. ALLERGIC INFLAMMATION Allergies can cause the mucous membranes in specific parts of the body to become inflamed. Inflammatory reactions of the eyes can cause itching, burning and redness. If the nose is affected, burning, itching, blockage, runny nose or sneezing spells can result. In the respiratory tract, constriction, dry cough, tickling in the throat or asthma can develop. The homeopathic formula for mucosal inflammation is designed to alleviate reactions of the mucous membranes in the eyes, nose and upper respiratory tract. ALLERGIC CONJUNCTIVITIS Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the mucous membranes that cover the exposed portion of the eyeballs and lines the inner surface of the eyelids. Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis generally occurs in the spring, induced by

grass pollen. It is also common in the late summer months, triggered by ragweed pollen. It usually affects both eyes. Itching is a major symptom, often with burning, redness and a watery, mucous discharge. The homeopathic remedy for conjunctivitis helps to relieve irritated eye symptoms associated with allergies. It is formulated to alleviate stinging pain, soreness, swelling and burning. It offers relief for whites of eyes that have become red. It also soothes red, swollen, itchy skin around the eyes. Homeopathic eye drops are also useful for allergic eye irritations. Excellent results have been obtained by using these along with the conjunctivitis remedy.

From garden to table: Kangro

Submitted by Anne Stupak

Bob Purton of area greenhouse Kangro, along with son Brendon recently hosted a special tour for regular customers as well as interested gardeners. “We invited our customers to come and see where we grow the vegetables that they regularly come to the Farmers Market (including Yorkton’s). People are always curious about what we do and how we do it, so we thought we would host our first open house to show them,” Purton says. Those that came were impressed when they entered the 9000 sq ft of green house space. The first area is the tomato greenhouse with 2880 sq ft of tomatoes all standing over 6’ tall loaded with tomatoes is a pretty impressive site. Kangro grows beefsteak, cherry,

grape and yellow cherry tomatoes and romas. Picking everyday harvest hundreds of pounds of tomatoes to take to the local markets. The other greenhouses contain mini cucumber and lettuce, as well as the larger cucumbers, Sweet and hot peppers, Eggplant and Swiss Chard. All of which need to be picked fresh for market. Potatoes, cabbage, broccoli, kale, carrots, beets, beans, green onion, corn

GRAHAM - Mrs. Violet Graham beloved wife of the late George Graham of the Invermay Health Centre, formerly of Foam Lake and the Invermay district passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the Gateway lodge in Canora. Violet Kathleen Graham (nee Ogilby) was born on October 14, 1921 on SW 33-31-9 W2, Sheho, Saskatchewan, the second youngest daughter of Hugh and Jane Robinson (Cahoon) Ogilby. She took her schooling at Dunrobin & Newburn Schools where she completed Grade 6; Grade 7 was taken at home by correspondence. After Violet finished school she worked at home and also did housekeeping at Osborne's in Yorkton and at Pincer's at Theodore for the grand sum of $8.00 per month. Violet married George Graham on November 27, 1942 at Yorkton. They lived on the SW 26-32-9 W2 until December 1943, and then moved to NE 2832-9 W2 where they lived until 1974. They sold their farm to son Donald and retired to Foam Lake. In 2004, Violet moved back to Invermay where she lived in a Seniors' Housing Unit. She became a resident of the Invermay Health Centre in June 2008. She passed away peacefully at Gateway Lodge, Canora on June 20, 2013. George & Violet had 6 children: Kathleen, Gordon, Donald and Allan (twins), William (Billy) and Eileen. Violet became a certified reflexologist in 1966 after completing the required courses in Calgary, Regina & Saskatoon. She gave treatments at home on the farm and also in Foam Lake until 1983. In her younger years she liked playing ball and at 75 she would still bat flies to her grandchildren when she went to the farm and they would run for her. She enjoyed going to the Seniors' Garden Parties at her daughter's farm, as well as travelling to Ontario and B.C. Violet liked knitting, sewing, gardening and looking after her flowers. She was a great cook and liked baking. Boston Brown Bread, oatmeal cookies and shortbread were her grandkids' favorites. Violet enjoyed visiting her friends and the family gatherings, be it for a birthday or Christmas. We always called her the family 'matriarch' in her later years. In more recent years, she became 'Grandma Purple', a name given her by a great-grandchild, Bronwyn, because it seemed like Great Grandma was always wearing something with purple in it or on it whenever she saw her. Mom had excellent penmanship and every letter was perfectly formed according to the 'A.B.C. Learning to Write' book. She made her choice to serve God many years ago and was true to her beliefs until her passing. Violet was predeceased by her husband George (1988), sons Allan (1980) and Billy (2012); parents Hugh (1969) and Jane (1938) Ogilby; brothers Tom (1939) and Willy (1998); sister-in-law Anna (1990), brother-in-law & sister-in-law Harvey and Irene Ashdown, brother-in-law Bob Graham; nephews Lyle & Malcolm Ashdown and Bob (Robert G.) Graham and niece Linda Thomson; father-in-law & mother-in-law John and Jane Graham and daughter-in-law Lynn Graham. She will be remembered by her 6 children & 18 grandchildren: daughter Kathleen (Chester) Minhinnick, children Dale (Gail) Minhinnick, Crystal (Barry) Halushka, Candace (Blair) Cmoc, Cindy (Jason) Babichuk and Carmen (Colby) Wolkowski; son Gordon (Sharon) Graham, children Cheryl Graham, Cameron (Suzanne) Graham and Marshall Graham; son Donald, children Regan (Jana) Graham and Diana (Darwyn) Glas; daughter-in-law Shirley Graham, children Jodi (Jeff) Cobb and Shawn (Katherine) Graham; daughter-in-law Darlene Graham, children Michelle (Jeremy) Glas, Clarke Graham, Wendy (Noel) Parish and Kelly Graham; daughter Eileen (Jack) Rioch, children Quinn Rioch and Brooks Rioch, as well as her sister Jean Graham and 34 great-grandchildren: Josh, Cody, Levi and Nathaniel Minhinnick; Austin Halushka; Riley, Dakotah, Kennedy and Caitlin Cmoc; Breanne, Orrie, Mikayla and Brendan Babichuk; Grady, Porter and Paisley Wolkowski; Kelin and Cordell Graham; Faye and William Graham; Brandon and Doran Graham; Preston and Morgan Graham; Abigail, Brennan and Dillan Graham; Merra and Nella Cobb; Madeline and Weston Glas; Bronwyn, Ryland and Lennon Parish. She is also remembered by many nieces, nephews and cousins, including some cousins in Australia and Ireland and relatives in Ontario. Mom, you are once again with Dad, Allan and Billy. You were loved by all of us and will be missed, not only by us, but by your many friends as well. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 from the Invermay Community Hall with Agnes Smiley, Margaret Hansen and Jim Atcheson officiating. Granddaughter, Jodi Cobb was the pianist. The hymns were Only Remembered, Called Home To Rest and Near To The Heart of God. Jodi Cobb and Katherine Graham sang a duet Blessed Homeland.
