CA$H BAC K FOR CHRISTMAS

Gov’t announces $1 million for ag. growth Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart has announced $1 million in funding for a new Industry Organization Development Fund. This funding will be provided over the next five years to help agricultural producer associations, commissions and boards to increase their capacity as industry leaders. “Industry organizations play a critical role in contributing to the overall success of Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry,” Stewart says. “They bring forward best practices, new technologies and new opportunities to Saskatchewan’s farmers and ranchers, which in turn contributes to the continued growth of our agriculture industry and provincial economy.” The Industry Organization Development Fund will support producer organizations in development, technology transfer and communications. This includes hiring qualified consultants to help develop leadership, priority setting and organizational development skills. Funding can also be used for training and assistance for issues related to labour shortages, to develop and hold workshops and conferences, to address market access issues and to develop production and economic tools.

C

– funding to help develop organizational tools

Saskatchewan crop commodity associations, commissions and boards as well as primary, broad-based livestock commodity associations can receive up to $10,000 per year for qualified projects. “This fund will help organizations like ours reach producers with the valuable information and tools that can help move our sector forward,” Saskatchewan Forage Council President Aaron Ivey adds. “In addition, it will provide the opportunity to identify priorities and ensure that our organization is working on issues of importance to industry stakeholders.” Funding for the Industry Organization Development Fund is provided under the federal-provincial Growing Forward 2 framework. For more information on the program, visit the Saskatchewan Agriculture website at www.agriculture.gov. sk.ca/GrowingForward2.

Crown land clients will receive notification letters of these meetings. Consultations will address issues such as: improving client service; clarifying language and administration; identifying solutions for land-use conflicts; developing enforcement mechanisms; and strengthening regulatory frameworks.

Dollars for Scholars set to tee off A fixture of the summer golf season in East Central Saskatchewan is back for another year. Parkland College has announced the eighth annual Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic will be held Friday, June 21 with a 1 p.m. shot gun start at Deer Park Golf Course in Yorkton. The event raises money for the Parkland College scholarship fund through golfer entry fees, business sponsorships, a silent auction, and games and contests. Thanks to the generous support of local businesses, community groups, and individuals, last year’s event raised a record $25,600 for local students enrolled in a wide variety of programs at the college’s five campuses. “Each year we’ve raised more money than the last,” says Dollars for Scholars co-chair Brendan Wagner. ““It’s awesome to see the continued support from everyone in our region. Our golfers really enjoy the day, and knowing that the proceeds go to such a worthy cause is a big bonus.” The 1 p.m. shot gun start is new for this year’s event. Past events had started at 11 a.m., but Wagner said the later start time will allow more people to get away from work for an afternoon of golf. Team registrations are filling up quickly as a result, he noted, but a few spots remain. Entry is $100 per person or $400 for a team of four golfers. The fees include 18 holes of golf, power cart rental, barbecue steak supper, and prizes. Registration forms can be downloaded from the college’s website – parklandcollege.sk.ca. Businesses can sponsor the event with either cash or prize donations. For more on the eighth annual Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic, call Parkland College at 1.866.783.6766, email dollarsforscholars@parklandcollege.sk.ca, or visit a campus in Yorkton, Melville, Fort Qu’Appelle, or Esterhazy.

Garage sale stuff – better than average? Ed, my neighbor next door, noticed me carrying various articles to my garage last week. Yesterday, he saw me taking two electric heaters there, “So, do you know it’s June? Are you planning on heating your garage in the summer?” he asked from across his yard while exhaling his cigarette smoke. “Well, I hope to heat up the garage as we have a sale there in a couple of weeks,” I answered. “Save your money and get a loan from the bank, because the stuff we are selling will be too good to miss out on.” “Garage sales are more about getting rid of junk than selling things too good for others to miss,” Ed said. “Think of it as second-hand treasures for the discriminating,” I told Ed. Then I quickly added, “I need your help to move an upright freezer to the garage. It is not real heavy, so you’ll have no trouble wheeling it around on the dolly while I supervise.” “I can’t help you with my bad back, but I’ll watch you struggle and sweat to get the freezer to the garage. Better get prepared for when it does not sell,” Ed added. “Sometimes you can’t even give junk away.” “It will sell. The price will be too good to resist,” I informed Ed. Too good to resist is

Neighborly Advice According to Ed

Place your ad in

by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com what a garage sale is all about. While some might see the articles for sale as used and even junk, there is the hope that somebody will see something as too good to resist. A garage sale article too good to resist must be matched by a good price, a cheap price, a price that is a steal. Pricing articles for a garage sale is not easy, as they may have sentimental value for the person selling them. An article may have worked well for us, but we forget it is old and out of date now. We may see articles as more valuable than they are. It seems most people think that they, too, are better than they are. A recent edition of Scientific American reports that psychologists did a test that showed this. They showed people varying pictures of themselves. Only one of the pictures that people looked at of themselves was not touched up. All the other pictures were doctored to make the person look better or worse. When people

were asked to pick the picture of themselves, that was the honest one, or the untouched one, they almost always picked a picture that made them look better. The Scientific American report calls it “self-enhancement.” It is thinking we are better than we actually are. Self-enhancement was at work in other studies where 93 per cent of people asked said they were betterthan-average drivers. Likewise, 94 per cent of college professors said they do “above-average work.” The Bible tells us that the disciples were guilty of self-enhancement. They disputed who of them could be considered the greatest. They were not content to see themselves as average, ordinary disciples. Jesus reminded them that he was the greatest, but he was there to serve, not be served. He was the one who washed their feet. He wasn’t about self-enhancement, but self-denial to serve and bless others. It is God’s way of enhancement

Cold wave laser therapy – a hot item in cellular medicine Cold wave laser, or Low Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT), as it is often called, is an exciting hot new therapy in cellular medicine! Cold wave lasers are not to be confused with hot lasers. Hot lasers are used for hair removal or eye surgery, for example, and have risks associated with them. Cold lasers are very safe. There are evidently no known reports of any permanent injuries in over 40 years of use. They have therapeutic effects on the cells and have helped people find substantial relief from many painful acute and chronic conditions.

produce ATP energy. ATP is the currency that cells use, much like money is the currency we use. Let’s say that an individual requires $20.00 per day to survive, $100.00 per day to function well, and $500.00 a day to take a vacation. We could use this analogy at the cellular level. Let’s say that an individual cell needs 20.00 ATP to survive. But to function optimally, it needs 100.00 ATP. And to repair, it requires 500.00 ATP! As you can see, light photons from LILT provide valuable energy that cells need in order to heal and repair!

CELL HEALTH

CELL EFFECTS

It is plain and simple... We are healthy or sick at the cellular level. We have known for a long time that for our cells to survive and to function properly, they require oxygen, nutrients, circulation and detoxification. More recently, a new cell optimizer has been discovered – light! Light particles, called photons, carry energy. Photons are converted into ATP energy in the cells. By donating light photons to injured cells, LILT kick starts ATP energy production in the mitochondria. ATP supplies energy for cellular function. And of course, we know that it takes lots of energy to heal!

The primary effect of LILT is energy. But there’s more! LILT also has four very important secondary effects. Firstly, it has an antiinflammatory effect, reducing swelling and inflammation. Chronic inflammation can be like smouldering coals – not urgent enough to call out the fire department. But LILT can change chronic inflammation into an acute inflammatory response. When LILT makes it into a little fire, the body can react properly and finally put that fire out! Secondly, it promotes tissue regeneration, allowing tissue healing and significantly improved wound recovery. Thirdly, it results in pain reduction. Fourthly, it increases circulation. Poor blood circulation is one of the main reasons behind many chronic condi-

CELL SAFETY The Hippocratic Oath says to “First do no harm.” Whatever we put into our bodies, whether we eat or drink it, or whether it gets absorbed through our skin (like light photons do), we need to make sure that it is safe to the trillions of cells that make up our bodies! If you use NSAIDS (Non-Steroidal AntiInflammatory Drugs) for pain relief, there are possible dangers. Risks include allergic reactions, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, hematologic (pertaining to the blood) and renal (kidney) risks. In contrast, LILT has been found in studies to be just as effective for pain relief, but without all the risk!

BIG WIN – The Yorkton United Shock Under 12 girls recently travelled to the Regina QC Challenge cup. The team won big, taking home first prize in the tournament.

The World Taekwondo Federation held its 89th International Referee Refresher course in Innsbruck, Austria recently. Susanne Mitchell of Kees Yorkton attended to be apprised of some rule changes that will be implemented. The seminar was attended by around 160 of the worlds top international referees including many past Olympic officials. Only two referees scored 100 per cent on their exam. Mitchell was one of those two referees. This will be a boost for her as she works towards her goal of being selected for the 2016 Olympic games. Mitchell finished up the week officiating at the Austrian Open. Her next important event is the French World Championships in Vietnam held this June in Ho Chi Mihn City. Mitchell is the provincial referee chair. Her experience and results are a testament to the high quality referees within our provincial

program and the level of expertise she gives back to Saskatchewan.

SUSANNE MITCHELL was one of three referees to score 100 per cent at the recent World Taekwondo Federation International Referee Refresher in Innsbruck, Austria.

How to protect your home while at the cottage The home protection checklist When you’re going away on your annual cottage vacation you want to rest—and rest easy too. You want peace of mind that your home is as safe as it can be from burglary or other damage. According to Patrice De Luca, V.P. of Marketing and Customer Care for Reliance Protectron Security Services, there are several key steps you should take to ensure peace of mind when away from home. The following Reliance Protectron home protection checklist can help you plan important safety measures before your departure: Did you suspend your newspaper and mail delivery; or have a neighbor collect them for you? Does the house look lived-in? That means having someone park their car in your driveway if you’re taking yours. You can even ask a neighbor to put a bag of garbage at your curb on garbage day. Did you set your lights on timers, in various rooms? With some timers, the lights go on and off at different times each day, which means a burglar can’t pick up on a pattern. Motion sensor lights outside can also deter a burglar. Consider installing them in front and back. Did you ensure that all your doors and windows are locked and secure? Don’t forget about the garage. Place a bar or stick of wood in the lower track of sliding doors or windows, to be extra safe. Did you turn off the water-main and unplug the major appliances as an added precaution?Did you inform a neighbor when you’re leaving and returning, and ask them to keep an eye out for anything suspicious? Leave them a phone number where you can be reached, and a spare set of your keys in case of an emergency. Did you consider a home security system? A home security system is a very effective deterrent. When looking for their targets, thieves usually select an unoccupied home with the easiest access. Why not make it difficult for

them. A home protected by a home security system is three times less susceptible to a break in than one without a system. Home security system decals and yard signs are also an effective deterrent. Make sure your home security system includes a loud inside house siren, detectors at all exterior doors, and motion sensors in the master bedroom and main living areas. De Luca says the latest home automation technology in interactive home security systems can now allow monitoring of your home from a distance by wireless transmission through your smartphone. Fully interactive security systems, like

Protectron’s Go Control, lets you arm and disarm your alarm, lock or unlock your front door, control lights and your home’s thermostat from your cottage at the touch of your smartphone. You can even have video monitoring and be alerted to view the comings and goings of cleaning staff or house sitters on your phone. The interactive security system is linked to the ULC interlinked remote monitoring centres that protects your home 24 hours a day against burglars, fire, carbon monoxide poisoning and floods. Safety tips for summer fun The weather is heating up and Canadians are heading outdoors to soak up the fun. Warm weather enthusiasts should keep safety top of mind when they’re out camping, boating and barbecuing. CSA Group, a leader in testing and certification, gives these tips on how to stay safe all summer: Camping Stoves and Lanterns • Fuel-burning camping equipment such as stoves, lanterns and outdoor cookers should only be lit outdoors and at least 3 metres (10 feet) from tents, combustible materials and vehicles. Never light a stove or lantern inside a tent or vehicle. • Before use, carefully inspect parts for leaks, blockages or damage. • Keep loose, flammable clothing away from open flames. Carefully monitor children and pets around stoves and lanterns. Boats and Cottages • Ensure that boats and cottages are equipped with proper emergency safety equipment, including first aid kits and fire extinguishers, and carbon monoxide and fire alarms. • When first opening your cottage, carefully inspect all appliances for damage from rodents or insects. • Always wear a personal flotation device when on the water. Never consume alcohol while operating any vehicle. Outdoor Gas Barbecues • Before firing up your barbecue for the first time, carefully inspect burners and burner tubes for blockages due to dirt, grease, insects or rust buildup. Clean or replace any blocked parts or have a certified technician make repairs. • Propane cylinders must be inspected and re-qualified every 10 years in Canada. A date stamp on the cylinder indicates when it was last qualified. Don’t use a rusty or damaged cylinder. If in doubt, have your tank replaced. • When purchasing or installing a gas barbecue, make sure that it carries the mark of an approved certification organization, such as CSA Group, indicating that it has been tested to applicable national standards.
