Partnership renewed Health Minister Dustin Duncan, Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN) President Rosalee Longmoore and the Regional Health Authorities have announced they have signed a renewal of their partnership agreement. “Registered nurses are important partners in bringing about the transformation we’re seeing in our health system,” Duncan comments. “This new partnership provides a wonderful opportunity to continue working together on our shared commitment to a quality health care system where we put the patient first in everything we do.” This two-year renewal builds on the successes of a 2008 SUN/government partnership, which committed to work together to solve Saskatchewan’s shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs), and Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioners) by supporting and maintaining an appropriate, experienced, educated and engaged registered nurse workforce for the provision of high-quality, safe patient care. Seeded acre deadline nears The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) is reminding Crop Insurance customers to submit their Seeded Acreage Reports and Stored Grain Declarations by June 25. SCIC reports that it uses this information to calculate insurance coverage, claims and producer premiums. New in 2012, producers
have the option of selecting up to $100 per eligible acre for the Unseeded Acreage Benefit (USA). Honey producers insuring their crops are reminded the deadline to report their number of hives and stored honey is also June 25, 2012. The deadline to report acres seeded for greenfeed is July 5, 2012. Customers can submit
Seeded Acreage Reports and Stored Grain Declarations to SCIC by phone, mail, fax or by visiting a local Crop Insurance office. Seeded Acreage Reports can also be completed online through CropConnect. For more information, producers can contact their local Crop Insurance office or call 1-888935-0000.
GIFT OF LIFE – The Gift of Life walk raises money for the Kidney Foundation, the national volunteer organization committed to reducing the burden of kidney disease, which raises awareness of kidney health and the importance of organ donation. The walk raised more money than last year, bringing in $13,777, with approximately 100 people taking part in the walk. There will also be an additional $900 to help people with kidney disease locally, as it is being donated to the Yorkton Dialysis Unit. Organizer Audrey Parisloff would like to thank everyone for their support.

The signing of today’s agreement enables us to renew and continue the impressive collaboration I’ve seen at the SUN partnership table, and I’m pleased to make this commitment today on behalf of all health regions.” The partnership will also explore areas such as: • maximizing employment opportunities for graduate nurses; • addressing the challenges of retaining and recruiting registered nurses into rural and northern facilities; working collaboratively toward a cul-
ture of safety; • targeting recruitment and retention initiatives; • and, increasing employee engagement. The first of its kind in Canada, the 2008 agreement set out a framework for SUN and the provincial government to work with health regions to hire 800 RNs, RPNs and and RN(NP)s with annual targets set out for achieving this goal over four years. Now more than 900 additional registered nurses are working in the province, more than exceeding the goal. Most of these registered nurses were hired as part of the work under the partnership agreement. SUN’s membership includes almost 9,000 Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses and Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioners).

by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com Ed, my neighbor next door, heard we were at one of the seven ceremonies for this years’ spring convocation for the University of Saskatchewan. A couple of years ago, Ed and Ruby attended the convocation of graduates for the College of Veterinary Medicine at the same university. Ed says that he could not believe there were so many degrees given away that year. I said it was probably like this year, when more than four hundred graduates got degrees in just the one ceremony we were at. It was said in our ceremony that three thousand were graduating altogether this spring. Ed said that three thousand sounded about right. At the ceremony they were at, row after row of graduates got one degree after another, so that Ed felt he was being kept in a school detention. Ed claims the convocation was longer than a church service which can go on forever. Ed is skeptical about universities and higher education. He sums it up this way. “It costs students or their parents a lot of money. It takes years to get a degree. It makes too many young people think they are know-it-alls with the right to riot as they like. Case in point, the university students protesting higher tuition fees in the streets of Montreal. Does rioting count as a field trip to explore the finer points of damaging innocent businesses and disturbing the peace?” I had no answer for Ed except that many students are not majoring in rioting. Most, I believe, seek to act in our society in a positive way. Many others besides students also protest for their own self-interest. There are many celebrated universities and scholars of learning, but even insti-
tutions of higher education have their limitations. The greatest minds or authorities in a field of study today can be discredited tomorrow. Their findings are proven wrong or incomplete. Know-it-alls have stale dates, just like a loaf of bread. It is good to celebrate with those receiving their degrees. Degrees proclaim years of study and learning so that graduates can contribute to society in the area of their talents and interests such as: business, law, education, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, dentistry, nursing, agriculture etc. People do not all have the same talents and interests. Our different gifts and talents are meant to be used for the common good not so we can become personally rich or celebrated. The Bible speaks of our human body as being made up of many parts. “The eye cannot say to the hand ‘I don’t need you!’ And the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you!’… If one part suffers every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” There is always a need for us all, with or without degrees, to contribute to the common good. Today, there may be a lack concern for the common good and a debate about the most necessary research and scholarly pursuits. The Bible warns, “The fool says in his heart there is no God.” It also cautions of those that do not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God who neither glorify Him as God nor give thanks to Him. When it comes to God, where are the wise man and the scholar? The wisdom of the world is foolishness in God’s sight. He knows the thoughts of the wise are futile. Do we realize God is the smartest of all?

The Government of Saskatchewan reports moose have been gradually expanding their range southward within the province over the past 30 years. The Ministry of Environment’s approach to managing the increasing numbers of moose has been to create an annual hunter harvest across southern Wildlife Management Zones (WMZ). Quotas have increased every year over the last four years, from 250 antlerless tags in 2008 to 1,335 tags in 2012. Each year harvest success is reviewed and adjustments are made to quotas based upon increases/decreases in the moose population, as well as the number of complaints from landowners and the public. The Ministry of Environment is also developing a management plan to address the issues associated with managing moose populations in the south. In addition, the government says it supports the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation’s public safety awareness campaign called The Moose is Loose! The campaign, which has financial support from SGI, reminds drivers to slow down and watch for wildlife crossing the roads. As well, the Ministry of Highways has placed warning signs (a yellow diamond shaped sign with a picture of a moose) in areas with frequent crossings.

Sask. heads south to fight fires Three Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment planes headed south to the United States to help fight wildfires there. The planes will work with United States Forest Service for 10 to 14 days, with a possibility of an extension. Current forest conditions in Saskatchewan have allowed the ministry to make some of its resources, including these aircraft, available to assist other jurisdic-
tions. A pair of Convair 580A air tankers and one Turbo Commander birddog aircraft, along with eight crew members, left Saskatchewan on Tuesday for Boise, Idaho. Staff were briefed before being deployed to Grand Junction, Colorado on June 13 to work under the direction of the United States Forest Service. “Agreements to share firefighting resources are in place across Cana-
