Funding for SK. ag. projects
ALL FIRED UP – The Parkland Regional College recently held a tour of its Emergency Services Training Site near Melville for area First Nations representatives. “We wanted to showcase what level of training we offer, and I think we opened some eyes,” says Shelley Cherney, Parkland College’s Coordinator of Emergency Services. “This is the only full-time professional firefighting training program in Saskatchewan...” The 14-week program provides a comprehensive blend of theory and practical skills required for entry-level firefighter positions.

Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart have announced more than $600,000 in funding for 63 producer-led agriculture research demonstration projects. The funding is provided through the Agriculture Demonstration of Practices and Technologies (ADOPT) program. “Our government understands that investments in research contribute directly to the success of our producers and our overall economy,” Ritz says. “We will continue to partner with the Province of Saskatchewan on initiatives that will help increase producer productivity and grow the agriculture industry.” ADOPT is designed to accelerate the transfer of new technologies to Saskatchewan’s farmers and ranchers. The program provides funding to producer groups to evaluate and demonstrate new agriculture practices and technologies at the local level. “As demonstrated in this year’s budget, our government is committed to making sure Saskatchewan is a leader in agriculture research,” Stewart adds. “Projects such as these will help farmers adopt new and innovative technologies and help us meet the objectives of the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth.” The 2013 Saskatchewan Agriculture budget included a record $27.7 million for agriculture research, an increase of more than 104 per cent since 2007. More docs in Saskatchewan than ever before: SIPPA Saskatchewan residents have better access to physician care, thanks to fourteen more doctors who are now practising in Saskatchewan. These doctors, who entered the Saskatchewan International Physician Practice Assessment (SIPPA) in January, recently passed all of the program’s requirements and are now practicing in
communities throughout the province. “We continue to recruit our own medical graduates from Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine, but we appreciate and rely on physicians from outside our own borders,” Minister Responsible for Rural and Remote Health Randy Weekes says. “I’m very pleased these interna-
tionally trained doctors have passed their assessment and are now providing care to Saskatchewan residents, further stabilizing the physician workforce throughout the province.” In addition to the new doctors from the January SIPPA program who are now practicing medicine, the May SIPPA intake is completely

full. Each intake allows 30 international medical graduates (IMGs) to apply to the program. A total of 25 of these IMGs are from Canada; four from South Africa, and one from India. Many of the candidates were trained in countries like Egypt, Nigeria, the Philippines and Iran. While all of them were successful at obtaining a seat in SIPPA,
they still have to successfully complete the program over the next few months. If successful they will move forward to the Clinical Field Assessment phase of the program in ten health regions around the province. “This is certainly encouraging. Continued on Page 2.

Yorkton Harley Davidson and the Harley Owners Group recently hosted the Gear Up parking lot party, which featured live music, lunch and the opportunity to get ready for the 2013 riding season.

“Not only is word getting out about SIPPA within Canada, it is spreading world-wide as we see more and more SIPPA candidates who were trained in a variety of countries coming to Saskatchewan in an effort to make it their home and practice medicine,” says Ed Mantler, saskdocs CEO. “It is good to see that many of them come from within Canada because saskdocs has been working hard at reach-
ing doctors within Canada to tell them about the many opportunities that await them here.” Keeping Saskatchewan medical graduates continues to be a high priority. “Even if we were 100 per cent successful at retaining every University of Saskatchewan (U of S) medical graduate, we would still have to recruit out of province, the demand is that great.” “SIPPA is a madein-Saskatchewan solution, and it is working.
Agriculture funding
We are delighted by the success of our candidates in their clinical field assessments. We will continue to work in partnership with saskdocs and our provincial government to ensure continued success for SIPPA and the IMGs who now have the opportunity to live and work in Saskatchewan” adds Dr. Penny Davis, Medical Director of SIPPA for the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. SIPPA expanded last year to assess doctors from all countries as long as they meet the

This funding will help achieve the goals set out in the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth which aims to increase crop production by 10 million tonnes, increase agri-food exports by 50 per cent and increase value-added opportunities. This year’s ADOPT projects demonstrate a wide range of innovative initiatives, including cattle breeding programs, crop protection products, trials of new crop varieties and seeding techniques, among others. Projects receiving funding this year include: • Beef cattle breeding programs and beef research school; • Cropping systems response to seed treatment, seed size and sowing density; • Demonstration of foliar fungicide options for canola; • Demonstration of the effect of fungicide application and seeding rate on disease levels in peas and lentils; • Evaluation of forage and grazing corn varieties; • Fungicide management practices in lentils to provide disease resistance; • Harvesting oats and barley as yellowfeed; • Forage management practices and techniques; • Optimal seeding rate for spring wheat; • Optimum timing of weed control in field peas and lentils; • Various fertilizer demonstrations; and • Straight combining canola.

It’s barbecue season: let’s talk food safety! Don’t you love that special grilled flavor of barbecued food? A barbecue can make an ordinary meal seem especially tantalizing and tasty! However, in warm weather, it is especially important to ensure food safety. In order to prevent food-borne illness and to enjoy a healthy barbecue season, let’s review some safety and nutrition tips.
cook it. If raw meat is kept outside, the hot summer sun will allow bacteria to multiply extremely quickly. To avoid bacteria-caused food poisoning, throw food away if it has been at room temperature for more than 1 or 2 hours. Keep hot food hot and cold food cold. Also keep food covered, to protect it from insects, birds and pets.
SPRING TUNE-UP
BBQ SAFETY
Firstly, prepare your BBQ for the summer season. Clean it thoroughly, inside and out. Clean the venturi tubes at least every year, at the start of the season. Barbecues can harbor insect nests, which are the main cause of gas barbecue fires. Invest in a new barbecue brush.
Keep raw and cooked meat in separate dishes, since raw meat can contaminate cooked meat. Always place cooked meat on a clean dish. Never reuse the platter that held the raw meat, unless you wash it well first. Throw out uncooked marinade that was used for raw meat. If you want to use left-over marinade to baste meat as it is being grilled, bring the marinade to a boil in a pot and cook at a boil for at least 10 minutes before using it. Be absolutely sure that meat is cooked sufficiently, and is hot all the way through. Meat should no longer be pink and juices should run clear.
GETTING READY Preheat the grill, to keep the cooking surface sanitary, by setting the burners on high for 10 minutes or more. The BBQ chef must maintain high food safety standards. Make sure that all food handlers wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling food and after handling raw meat. If you are serving fish, meat or poultry, rinse them first in Sunrider Fruit & Veggie Rinse or in cool water and three per cent hydrogen peroxide to remove harmful bacteria. Keep raw meat refrigerated until you are ready to

Sask. wheat research funded
Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart has announced $5 million in wheat research funding over five years. This investment, along with the recently-announced Canadian Wheat Alliance is part of a $10 million commitment made by Premier Brad Wall at the Saskatchewan Agriculture Wheat Summit in February 2012. This funding will be matched by private sector companies to target projects aimed at accelerating the development of wheat varieties as well as improving yields and competitiveness of our wheat industry. Today’s announcement allocates $2.7 million for the first three projects. “Wheat is an important part of our economy with Saskatchewan exporting more than nine million tonnes of wheat worth more than $3 billion in 2012,” Stewart says. “Through these unique public-private partnerships, we are collaborating with industry to advance wheat research that will improve on these numbers and benefit farmers, our economy and consumers around the world.” These projects are co-funded with a $2.7 million investment by the province, together with a $2.7 million private sector investment by Dow AgroSciences ($1,250,000), Bayer CropScience ($800,000) and Secan ($665,000). The three projects receiving funding will target: • Enhancement of wheat breeding capacity; Development of wheat varieties for added quality and performance; and • Integration of fungicide strategies and genetic resistance to control stripe rust in wheat. Another $2.3 million in funding is available for future research projects, with a call for proposals coming in the fall. These projects are funded through the Government of Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Development Fund (ADF). The ADF invests millions of dollars each year to support agriculture research that is critical to Saskatchewan producers. Since 2007, the provincial government has invested more than $57 million through ADF. “It is important for the integration of public and private partnerships in developing research projects to improve the competitiveness of Saskatchewan wheat producers,” Commercial Leader Grains and Oils with Dow AgroSciences David Dzisiak adds. “Developing and encouraging future research will not only help the wheat industry in Saskatchewan, but sends a message to others that private investment will be needed to develop continued growth in the years to come.” “The joint project with SeCan, AAFC and ADF will provide needed funding to wheat research to ensure on-going development and evaluation of wheat lines,” Research and Development Manager with SeCan Jim Downey concludes.
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION by Dr. Gail Smolinski DNM® www.drgail.ca icals, called heterocyclic amines (Has), can be produced in the smoke. This occurs when barbecue favorites containing fat and protein are charcoal grilled at high temperatures. To reduce the risk, you can precook foods and finish cooking them on the grill. If you barbecue meat, always choose leaner cuts and trim the fat off. Oil and fats often spark smoke, which can be full of cancer-causing substances. GRILL YOUR VEGGIES You can add color and nutrients to your diet by barbecuing vegetables. Vegetable kabobs can be
made with peppers, mushrooms, onions, zucchini, tomatoes, garlic or other vegetables you choose to use. Brush the veggies with olive oil and your favorite seasoning. Use medium heat and turn often. If you want to barbecue potatoes, wrap them in parchment paper first, then in tin foil, so that the food never touches the aluminum. HEALTHY ADDITIONS When barbecuing patties, enjoy them in whole grain buns. These are lower on the glycemic index, higher in fiber and, in my opinion, much tastier and more satisfying than white buns. I heard
an interesting saying: “The whiter the bread, the sooner you’re dead.” Now, that’s something to chew on! Here are some nutritional facts about condiments and other seasonal foods. I will first list the calories, then grams of sugar, then grams of fat for 1 teaspoon of each condiment: • Ketchup - 20 - 5 - 0; relish - 15 - 4 - 0; mustard - 0 - 0 - 0; mayonnaise 100 - 1 - 11; light mayonnaise - 30 - 3 - 2; light BBQ sauce - 9 - 2.2 - 0.1. Likewise, here are the calories, grams of sugar, and grams of fat for 1: • Beef patty - 340 - 3 27; veggie patty - 106 - 0.7 - 2.8; hot dog - 181 - 1 - 15; 1 veggie hot dog - 70 - 1 3.5. The following are for ½ cup: Macaroni salad - 158 - 19 - 8; potato salad - 220 - 19 - 15; creamy coleslaw - 130 - 15 - 7. I trust this information will help you to have a safe and healthy barbecue season!

“My broadcasting career was all about making people happy! Making people smile and making their day. That’s what they do at Yorkton Toyota and that is why I’m here! After spending about 15 minutes with Evan Ortynsky I knew it was the place for me. Evan treats his employees like family and they in turn make you, the customer, feel right at home. We’re friendly, we’re reliable . . .it really is that simple!”
