VIA Rail rumours a cause for concern

The president of Transport Action Prairie (TAP) is warning rumored cuts to VIA Rail could see the reduction in passenger rail service through Melville and Western Canada. Ron Haskell of Melville says following the federal budget which chopped $20 million from VIA’s annual operating budget, the transcontinental “Canadian” which runs from Toronto to Vancouver three times a week could be cut to two times. While VIA hasn’t announced any service reductions, the fact it has referred to “finetuning... of service, schedules and fares to serve markets more efficiently,” is cause for concern Haskell says. To head off any impending cuts, Haskell says it’s important the public approach their Members of Parliament along with representatives of other levels of government to make clear their opposition to service reductions. “It’s all really going to depend on public support. Western Canada has borne

– budget cuts the brunt of passenger rail cutbacks for several decades now and (governments) seem to be continuing that trend,” Haskell explains. “If people from Western Canada just accept (reductions) then you can consider it to be a done deal.” Transport Action Prairie with membership from Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba has a mandate to act as an advocacy for better public transit, Haskell says, and there are troubling signs for the transcontinental service. “Our members have been alerted to this that (government) want to reduce it to twice a week from the current three times a week, during the offseason. As a result, the Government of Saskatchewan is introducing a new nutrition guidelines policy, in order to help schools in the province better prepare nutrition programs for their schools. “Nowadays they don’t even consider Christmas to be high season so that, in fact, may be included, too.” Haskell points to the lack of attention directed to Western Canada by VIA in upgrading service. Today, the 10 worst VIA stations, Haskell says, are located in Western Canada and when VIA was given funding to upgrade stations, none in Western Canada – with the exception of Winnipeg’s – got upgrades. The Melville VIA station is in need of maintenance: “It’s already showing serious signs of wear and tear and needs to be maintained. Something that is far, far down on VIA’s priority list.” Interestingly enough, Haskell says, VIA ridership appears to be increasing. VIA counted 109,000 passengers rode the rails last year, an increase of 3,000 from the 2010 numbers. The short shrift given Western Canada stands in direct contrast to Central Canada where VIA carries 4.1 million customers with the overwhelming majority – 3.8 million – riding the Quebec City to Windsor corridor. Rumors are circulating VIA might even cut service in Central Canada after seeing riders decreased by 12,000 last year compared to the previous year, but that’s unlikely to happen, Haskell suggests, because Easterners won’t accept it. “People in Ontario and Quebec have expected high quality rail service. They demand it, they get it. People from Western Canada are a bit shy of it. They do not pester their Members of Parliament and as a consequence we have far, far inferior passenger rail service compared to what is afforded Ontario and Quebec.” There’s been no official comment from VIA but Haskell says this could be dictated by the federal government which would prefer an reduction announcement would come this summer when Parliament is in recess, thus minimizing public criticism. And that’s why the public has to make known its desire to maintain VIA service, he says. “If you really are concerned about it I urge you to let your Member of Parliament know, also the other levels of government can play their role in urging the federal government to improve upon VIA Rail’s passenger service. “It’s an environmentally friendly service and something that’s becoming more and more important as we deal with issues of global warning and other environmental issues.”

Poetry has a way of getting me down Ed, my neighbor next door, was disgusted with me again yesterday. It was my fault in that I forgot that Ed has a great feeling of disgust for poetry. He asked me what I was up to and I said that I was trying to get poetry completed for submission before the end of the month. “That’s just a waste of time,� snapped Ed. Then he added, “You need to get a grip Ray. I saw you out here in your yard snapping pictures of a bush!� “Guilty as charged,� I admitted. “Did you notice how beautifully my spirea bush is blooming this year?� It was enough to push Ed over the edge. “Do I look like somebody who notices stupid bushes? The things I notice are acres of yellow canola or blue flax, white-faced Herefords and tractors you’d need a step ladder for, just to get into the cab!� Ed snarled. I told Ed to settle down – that he was getting all agitated like a

The state of the art Trades and Technology Centre will house training space and classrooms that will allow the College to produce more than 350 skilled graduates per year, and also upgrade the skills of 2,000 workers annually. This project represents a significant expansion of services and program delivery options that are not currently available in the Parkland region. “This important gift comes at a critical time in the development of the Trades and Technology Centre, and provides the college and the region with significant momentum. We are grateful to PotashCorp for its vision, encouragement, and leadership,” says Myers.

“We know the demand for skilled tradespeople and technicians is expected to remain high in this province for a long time. We have a lot of support from the communities and industry partners in our region. They’re telling us this needs to happen. And a commitment like this from PotashCorp will go a long way to making it a reality.” The Trades and Technology Centre will help deliver on the vision of a stronger Saskatchewan and bring new opportunities to the Parkland Region. Investments in the project will provide the necessary resources to sustain economic, social, and cultural growth. “Our strength as a province and a region has always been our people,” Myers explains. “Building a community where families are confident their children can receive a good education is vital to attracting and keeping our greatest asset.”

New hockey program in Melville This July, there will be a new hockey program in Melville and the head man will be teaching more than the basics. Assistant coach of the SJHL’s Yorkton Terriers Casey O’Brien will be at the helm of the high performance camp for elite players to be held at Horizon Credit Union Centre (HCUC) in Melville in the evening hours from July 9 - Aug. 23. “A couple of players I know asked if I knew of a camp they could go to and I just decided I’d put one on here in Melville,” says O’Brien. The players taking part in the camp will be divided into two groups. One group will hit the ice Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening and they will be Bantam AA and Midget AA caliber players. Tuesday and Thursday players who have played at the Midget AAA level or higher will be put through their paces. O’Brien says that the kids in the program come

from as far away as Regina and he’s pleased with the number of enrollments he’s had already. “My goalie spots are all full, but I still have some openings for defencemen and a few left for forwards,” admits O’Brien who says word of mouth has generated most of the admissions. “Some people have signed up for some of the sessions but they have committed to leave to go to other camps. I got a bit of a late start.” O’Brien will also be taking care of the hockey portion of the Supreme Skating School camp and he says that partially spurred him to make the decision to hold the program in Melville. “I told guys I could get ice in Melville and boom, it took off from there.” Each session at the camp will last two hours with the first hour dedicated to skill development, power skating, timing and flow drills while the second hour will deal with

small area games, scrimmages and conditioning. O’Brien says he’s hoping to have 30 players involved in each group when the camp gets underway and he says the timing of the camp and the type of drills he has planned will only help players to achieve the next level in their game. “More than a handful of these guys will be attending Western Hockey League camps and I thought this would be a good stepping-stone for them,” says the former University of Guelph player who also spent a couple of years in Norway playing professionally. O’Brien says the HCUC is a terrific facility for his hockey program. Cost for the camp is $300 for skaters and O’Brien is also offering dryland training at a cost of $200 for 10 sessions. MOTOCROSS – Motocross season has begun, and those interested in riding can take advantage of Millstone Park Raceway just outside of Yorkton. The track is open daily to Yorkton Motocross Club members, and day passes for non-members are available at Schrader Motors from Monday to Saturday. Kickboxer comes home Former Melville resident Bret Haacke was back in the city recently, giving students at MCS a lesson in kickboxing. The mixed martial artist, who attended MCS in his high school days, held a demonstration training session at the school prior to the CMTCA Team Canadian Kickboxing Trials June 9-10. “This is where I am from, I know everybody here. This town has given me a lot,” Haacke says. “I started my training in martial arts here with Tim (Oehler) who has been one of the biggest influences in my life.” Haacke started kickboxing at 16 and began training with Oehler at the Sil Foo Kung Fu Training Çentre in Melville. Haacke now lives in Regina and trains out of the SIAM Kickboxing and Muay Thai facility. “I got my start in fighting when I was going to play AAA hockey when I was 16,” says Haacke. “My brother said to me if you’re going to fight you have to win. That’s what got me started in boxing.” After playing AAA in Yorkton and Tisdale, Haacke laced up the skates for the Melville Millionaires Jr. A Hockey Club from 2004-2007. Although he trains out of Regina, Haacke has also traveled to Thailand

three times where he trained with some of the best Muay Thai fighters in the world. On each of his visits he’s spent between three and four months training. At the Canadian National Championships in Calgary Haacke lost a close five round decision to the eventual Canadian champion in the 178-pound fullcontact pro division. Away from the ring, Haacke works as a jail guard at the Regina Correctional Centre to pay his bills and finance his kickboxing career. “I’m not the kind of guy who likes asking for money and going out and looking for sponsors,” says Haacke. “I do it because I love it. I love to fight and compete and push myself. At the end of the day it ends up costing me money out of my pocket but it is what it is.” Haacke, who is now 29, says when his career is over he plans to one day own a gym and spread his knowledge to youth fighters. “I’m trying to stay out of teaching right now just because I have a few years of fighting left. Once I’m done I plan on having a gym and being a coach. I have learned a lot about myself through training and working out and one day I would like to pass that on.”

Charity wins at tournament Charities were once again the big winners in Melville’s Annual Charity Hole-In-One Golf Tournament held Saturday. “The main purpose of the event is to support the charities -- prizes are secondary,” says tournament committee member Jim Schmidt. There were 110 golfers who laced up their spikes or at least grabbed their clubs to enter and make this year’s event another successful one.

“The numbers aren’t all in yet, but we should end up raising similar a similar number to what we came up with last year,” says Schmidt. Despite some wet weather prior to the event and rain in the forecast, players competed for prizes and cash. “I think it went really well,” says Schmidt, member of the committee in charge of organizing the event which features a par three format.

“The weather turned around and co-operated and everybody had a good time – it was a success.” The profits from the tournament are spread among three benefactors: Melville Community Works, St. Paul Lutheran Home and the Melville Golf Course. Texas Scramble winners for the event, firing a sizzling 48, were Shane Webster, Brandon Peet, Mark Hanson and Darrell Webster.

Steer clear of pressuretreated wood when camping Bonfires—and more importantly, roasted marshmallows—are an essential part of any good camping trip. So what do you do when you're all set up and suddenly remember that you forgot firewood? If the campsite convenience store is sold out, do you borrow some from the folks beside you or scrounge around the site for something you can burn? Whatever you do, make sure you're not burning pressure-treated wood, which is wood that has been treated with preservatives such as creosote, pentachlorophenol, or chromated copper arsenate (CCA). Pressure-treated wood protects against fungi, insects and molluscs better than untreated wood – and this makes it useful in certain building projects. But the fact that it contains chemicals, which are released in ash and smoke when burned, makes it a no-go for firewood. Take a look at these tips from Health Canada to stay safe around treated wood:

• Never burn wood you suspect might be treated. Most pressure-treated wood has a greenish hue that typically fades over time, and can be found in abandoned play structures, old picnic tables, construction poles, fences or boat timbers. • If your campsite has picnic tables made from treated wood, always serve your food on plates and not directly from the surface of the table. • Do not compost or mulch sawdust or remnants from treated wood. Be on the safe side this camping season and pay close attention to the type of wood you burn or come into contact with. If you do accidentally breathe in smoke or ash from wood you suspect has been treated, you should seek medical attention.
