Safe driving for Sask. seniors – support networks available

With age does come wisdom but there are a host of other potential issues as well, some of which can affect one’s ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. In light of that fact, the Saskatchewan Safety Council, CAA Saskatchewan and SGI are joining together to help seniors stay safe behind the wheel. CAA has announced it has launched a new multimedia web tool, seniorsdriving.caa. ca, which helps seniors and their loved ones assess driving skills, learn more about changing abilities, and, if needed, modify driving habits. The Saskatchewan Safety Council also offers the 55 Alive Mature Drivers course, sponsored by SGI and CAA Saskatchewan. “Awareness of age-related changes that affect driving abilities is an important step in keeping ourselves and our families safe on the road, says Mindy Calder, Communications and Events Coordinatorfor the Saskatchewan Safety Council. Seniorsdriving.caa.ca contains assessment tools to pinpoint areas of improvement, interactive infographics that show common physical changes that affect driving, and videos with tips and reminders for manag-

ing challenging driving conditions. Half of seniors have already taken at least one step to adjust their driving habits, such as reducing or eliminating driving at night, but CAA Saskatchewan research shows there is need for more information regarding age related changes that affect driving. The Saskatchewan Safety Council also offers the 55 Alive Mature Drivers course free of charge to seniors with the help of SGI and CAA. The six hour course covers self-evaluation of current driving knowledge and habits, the aging process and how it affects driving, compensating for vision and hearing problems, adapting to hazardous road and weather conditions, understanding your vehicle, and safe driving when using medication. There is no examination for those who take the course, and their license is not affected. CAA research shows that nearly half (47 per cent) of Canadians are concerned about the safety of an aging family member on the road. The Saskatchewan Safety Council, CAA Saskatchewan and SGI say that seniorsdriving.caa.ca and the 55 Alive Mature Drivers course are both important tools to help keep our aging family members and friends safe on the road.

Province invests $10 million – college initiative funded By SHANNON DEVEAU N-R Writer It’s big news for Yorkton but it’s also a boon for the region and the province as a whole. On Tuesday Premier Brad Wall was in the city to make a big announcement. The Provincial Government has allocated $10 million in funding to support construction of a the new Trades and Technology Centre at Parkland Regional College.

Rules-based investing Financial freedom by Kim Inglis

www.reynoldsinglis.ca According to BlackRock, the average investor underperforms virtually all other traditional asset classes and even inflation. When comparing 20-year annualized returns by asset class, the average investor rings in at 2.3% compared to the S&P 500 Index at 8.2%. This underperformance is largely attributed to behavioral finance. Studies show that investor emotions are predictable and in sync with market cycles. During a bull market investor emotions have an upward trajectory from positive to confident, then thrilled, and peaking at euphoric. When markets fall, the emotions then track downward accompanied by surprise, nervousness, worry, and desperation. The descending emotional path ends in panic and defeat. As markets bottom out and start to regain some steam, investors cautiously re-enter the market as they become hopeful and encouraged. Unfortunately, emotions rule and most investors exit their investments at the bottom. According to Fidelity Investments, when individual investors attempt to buy low and sell high, they tend to do the opposite. An investor who put $10,000 in the S&P/TSX Composite Index January 1, 1975 would now have $486,200, an annualized return of 10.7%, despite many market dips. If that investor was out of the market during the 10 best months, the annualized return would drop to 7.5%. If the 60 best months were missed, the annualized return would be -1.8%. A first step in keeping emotions at bay is to create an Investment Policy Statement (IPS), setting parameters for making investment decisions and encouraging the discipline required to stick to the rules. Clear rules are important as they facilitate a calm assessment of hard facts and ensure proper reactions to new or changing information. Investors remain emotionally neutral, which ultimately makes them more likely to buy low and sell high. The next step is to build a portfolio with

investments that employ a rules-based approach. According to Barometer Capital Management, a disciplined strategy is half the battle. On the buy side, Barometer uses a number of systematized ranking systems and quantitative tests to determine whether a position should be added to a portfolio. A clearly defined selling strategy is equally important as it removes emotion and irrational decisions. Similarly, factor-based strategies can help maintain portfolio discipline. According to MSCI Inc, long-term equity portfolio performance can be explained by certain key factors. Some are generic while others are premiumearning factors, which earn a risk premium relative to a capitalizationweighted market index. Such factors include value, low size, low volatility, high yield, quality, and momentum. According to MSCI, the strategy brings transparency to factor allocations, which ultimately helps alleviate manager ‘style drift’ and has positive implications for risk management. One way to access factor-based strategies is to opt for exchange-traded funds (ETFs). First Asset recently launched four new exchange-traded funds (ETFs) built on the MSCI factor indexes, specifically, their risk weighted indexes. The ETFs are designed to provide liquidity, transparency, and low cost, together with strategies that aim to deliver better risk-adjusted returns. The most successful investors are those who effectively remove emotion from their investment decisions. Such investors create rules, document them in a comprehensive IPS, and select investments based on those criteria. Kim Inglis, CIM, PFP, FCSI, AIFP is an Investment Advisor & Portfolio Manager with Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management, a division of Canaccord Genuity Corp., Member – Canadian Investor Protection Fund. www. reynoldsinglis.ca. GENERAL EMPLOYMENT

Snow, blizzards, Arctic winds and damaging ice storms have wreaked havoc across the country during the long winter months, so are you sure your home will protect you from the elements all year long? There is no time like spring to make this assessment. Begin by inspecting the insulation, experts say. Upgrading the quality is your best defense for all seasonal changes and the most advanced is spray foam insulation. This innovative material will help mitigate heating and cooling cost increases and provide a return on investment while reducing your overall impact on the environment. Here’s a little guidance: Increase Insulation – While boosting your home’s insulation R-value can help enhance comfort, air sealing your home with an all-inone spray foam insulation product can actually help generate more efficiency. Take a look at a leading brand called, Icynene. Its high R-value and air-sealing properties can reduce heating and cooling bills as well as provide better temperature control all year round. Replace Underperforming Insulation – Traditional insulation materials such as fibreglass and cellulose tend to settle over time compromising their performance. Building professionals will typically suggest that homeowners replace underperforming insulation with a material that stays in place and performs optimally throughout the year. Plus, removing older insulation material helps reduce the risk of mould growth and mildew within the home. Shrink HVAC Needs – By increasing your home’s energy efficiency and using an air-sealing and insulating material like spray foam

The benefits of pet ownership is a two-way street There’s nothing like having a furry friend to change your outlook on life. Pet owners get it. Our pets pick us up when we’re down, help us relax when things get stressful, and make us laugh with all the goofy things they do. Even when they wreck the lawn, or eat a favourite shoe, we love them just the same. “I believe that having a pet helps us lead richer, fuller lives – emotionally, psychologically, physically, and spiritually,â€? says veterinarian, Dr. Debbie Stoewen, who is also the care and empathy officer at Pets Plus Us. “Our pets see us for who we truly are, without judgment – and that’s a powerful thing.â€? Pets Plus Us is a pet owner community and healthcare insurance provider focused on empowering and informing responsible pet ownership and pet health Dr. Stoewen points out that pets aren’t just good for pet owners, they’re good for our communities too. “Pets are great ’community builders’ and have a special way of connecting people. When someone sees you out with your pet, it’s much more likely that they’ll stop and talk with you.â€? Here are just a few more ways this can change your life: • Pets can help reduce stress and lower blood pressure, all good for the heart; • Having a dog that needs a daily walk can motivate you to stay active; • Pets can teach important life lessons to your children, like learning the responsibility of caring for other living creatures; • In a world where technology has allowed us to become more disconnected from direct contact with others, caring for a pet reinforces our natural empathy and strengthens our emotional connection; • Pets offer unconditional love and companionship, in a way that many human relationships can’t; • Pets can help with loneliness, especially for seniors and others who live independently. For all the benefits we receive, it’s also important for us to protect them as well, especially in the case of their medical needs. Today, the financial burden can be reduced substantially with insurance coverage – and more information on this is available at www.petsplusus.com. www.newscanada.com
