CA$H BAC K FOR CHRISTMAS
Incentives for rural doctors announced
THE SALTCOATS VINTAGE SNOWMOBILE RACE thrilled the crowd again this year. The event, hosted by the Saltcoats & District Volunteer Fire Department & First Responders, saw over 20 entries from across the province in the main race, as well as the biggest kitty cat race yet, pictured above, with twelve entries. The winners were: 1st place: Tyron Tangedal, 2nd place: Tory Tangedal, 3rd place: Riley Smith/Scott Griffith.
It’s Agriculture Safety Week Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart and Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan proclaimed Agricultural Safety Week in Saskatchewan, March 10-16. “There are risks in farming and ranching and we want to remind our province’s producers to take the steps necessary to keep themselves and their families safe,” Stewart says. “Agriculture safety should be a priority to ensure the continued success of the industry.” The week is held in conjunction
with Canadian Agricultural Safety Week, a partnership between the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, with financial support from Farm Credit Canada and federal and provincial governments. The theme of this year’s week is “Get with the Plan!”, which focuses on encouraging farmers to develop written health and safety plans for their operations. Saskatchewan Agriculture provides $70,000 in funding to the
Agricultural Health and Safety Network, an affiliation of the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture, which provides agricultural health and safety programming to over half of the farm families in Saskatchewan. More than 200 rural municipalities contribute funding to these projects. Saskatchewan Agriculture also provides $30,000 in funding to the Saskatchewan Association of Agricultural Societies and Exhibitions for farm safety workshops for youth.

Premier Brad Wall announced new funding to attract more recently-graduated physicians to rural Saskatchewan communities and improve patients’ access to physician services. The new Rural Physician Incentive Program will provide $120,000 in funding over five years to recent medical graduates who establish practice in rural communities of 10,000 or less. “Recruiting doctors to rural areas and keeping them once they’re here is a huge priority for our government,” Wall says. “We’ve had some really solid success, increasing the Saskatchewan’s overall physician supply, but there are challenges in rural communities. This program will help improve patient access to physician services in rural areas.” Eligible physicians will receive a payment at the end of each year of practice, with payments gradually increasing over the five-year period. Newly-graduated doctors typically finish studies with a large debt load due to their many years of education. The incentive is designed to help ease that burden. The program will be retroactive to April 1, 2012, and will be open to both Canadian and international medical graduates. It will be administered by saskdocs, the province’s Physician Recruitment Agency. The Rural Physician Incentive Program is among a number of initiatives underway to address physician recruitment and retention. Training and residency seats have been added to the College of Medicine in Saskatoon, more international doctors are coming to Saskatchewan through a new assessment process (Saskatchewan International Physician Practice Assessment, or SIPPA) that accepts applications from a wider range of countries, and more physicians are being trained in rural Saskatchewan, recognizing that experiencing a rural lifestyle increases the chance that they will stay for a longer term. Over 2,000 physicians are currently working in the province.

Sometimes being stubborn is necessary Ed, my neighbor next door, is off at his family’s place in Edmonton. Ruby, his wife, says that it is her winter mental health break. Since Ed is so bored with winter, Ruby talked him into a trip to his cousins at Edmonton. A week or two there gets Ed settled down. Ed hates driving in Edmonton’s busy traffic. He is forced to pay attention. Being in West Edmonton Mall, where no one knows his name, gets him frustrated. In Melville, Ed can always find someone to talk to, but in Edmonton, no one seems to care about who you are. Ed always says, “Big cities like Edmonton are full of people who don’t know each other and they like it fine that way.” After a week or two in Edmonton, Ed comes back with a new appreciation of Melville. Often, the winter is just as bad or worse there. Ed’s cousins get their exercise in a community pool. Appearing ivory white in a bathing suit and flopping around a pool in the kids’ end is not what Ed wants to do. His cousins walk at
Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com malls most days to keep fit and do a little card playing. Ed knows they have a little card playing and lots of walking backwards, but they fanatically keep walking. He watches them walk while he drinks coffee and eats doughnuts, but no one will talk to him so it’s lonely. Ed does like to know his cousins aren’t having any more winter fun
than him. Ed says, “winter hammers on and on in Edmonton as well as Melville.” Winter makes everything more challenging and a person just has to become as stubborn as the long winter weather. The other day I had to remove the back seats from my van. Three of the seats slid out just like they are supposed to do, but one was unco-
operative like a mule. It was so bad that I went to the glove compartment, got the manual, and read it about four times. In desperation, I sprayed with WD-40. That unyielding seat finally had enough and slid out of there like there had never been a problem. Stubborn situations need to be fought with stubborn effort, like a “tooth for a tooth or an eye for an eye.” Life has a way of hammering on every season and sometimes it seems we are not stubborn enough to meet it. Sometimes, the weather
won’t budge in our favor. Sometimes, it’s a health problem. Sometimes, it’s the death of a loved one or we are stuck with too little money and it seems hopeless. That is the time to stubbornly trust God most, for God alone has the power to lubricate, penetrate, budge and release situations in our favor. Jesus told a parable about the need for us to pray and not give up. I call it, “being stubborn in prayer.” In the parable, a widow kept coming to a judge with a plea that the judge would grant her justice

U18/U16 girls earn provincial soccer gold The Yorkton United Under 18/16 Girls soccer team claimed Gold at the 2013 Saskatchewan Indoor Soccer Provincial Championships in Regina. The first game on Friday night was against rival Regina Unidad. This was a hard, fast paced game that saw Yorkton come back after falling behind early to claim a 2-1 victory. Rita Fetsch scored both goals for Yorkton The second game of the round robin was against a strong Saskatoon United soccer club. This game also featured the goal tending debut of Breanne Malinowski who had never played the position before. This was a back and forth effort that saw Rita Fetsch open the scoring on a nice give and go passing play from Kendra Varjassy. Saskatoon was able to tie the game up a few minutes later then Kaylee Ford was able to bend the twine off a corner kick to give Yorkton the lead. The final ended up 2-2. The third game of the round robin against Humboldt would go towards determining the finalists for the Championship. Yorkton dominated this game from start to finish with Rita Fetsch scoring three times on some nice passing plays from Kendra Varjassy with Yorkton winning 3-1. This gave the girls first place after the round robin and they would once again face Saskatoon United in the final for gold. In the final Yorkton once again dominated play and opened the scoring on a pretty three-way passing play from Rita Fetsch to Caleigh Grunert to Kendra Varjassy who put the squad up 1-0. Rita Fetsch added two more insurance markers and Kaylee Ford earned the shutout to make the final 3-0. This was a strong showing by a team who only had three U18 players with the rest of the squad comprised of U16 aged players competing in the Under 18 category. This was the third straight Provincial Championship
THE PROVINCIAL GOLD MEDAL winners in girls Under 18/16 soccer are the Yorkton United. Pictured above, Back row l-r: Thor Berge (assistant coach), Breanne Malinowski, Canyon Desjarlais, Megan Mann, Alfredo Bermudez (head coach). Front row l-r: Caleigh Grunert, Roma Zulyniak, Kelsey Woloschuk, Kaylee Ford, Kendra Varjassy, Lauren Maier, Rita Fetsch. Missing: Meaghan Dietrich and Edie Schramm for the core of this team and the dedication and spirit of the girls is demonstrated in their level of play with Kaylee Ford and Breanne Malinowski taking over goal tending duties for the weekend. The team also received the Fair Play Award. This award is decided upon by the game officials throughout the weekend and is a very prestigious award to win. To the club and the players winning this award ranks just as high as winning the tournament. Congratulations also goes to Rita Fetsch who was named the tournament MVP.
U14 Girls take silver at provincials The Yorkton United Under 14 Girls soccer team claimed a silver medal at the 2013 Saskatchewan Indoor Soccer Provincial Championships in Regina recently. The first game of the tournament was against Regina Unidad. Yorkton controlled the play the entire game with many scoring chances and came out on top 1-0. Leia Zulyniak scored the game winner with Marley Kosedy earning the shutout in goal. The second game of the round robin was against a much tougher opponent, Saskatoon Lakewood. This was an evenly played game with great offensive and defensive play from both teams, with Yorkton United prevailing in the end 2-1. Goal scorers were Leia Zulyniak and Taryn Kustra with the game winner. The final round robin game would determine the final standings in the round robin pool and decide which two teams would advance to the playoff round. The opponent was Swift Current and once again this was a back and forth match with a final score of 1-1. Jordan Holinaty scored the goal for Yorkton. The tie ensured the club of first place in their pool and they advanced to the playoff round. In the semi-finals the club was slated to take on Saskatoon Hollandia. However due to some unforeseen circumstances Yorkton advanced to the final by default as the Saskatoon club did not show up for the semi-final. The Final was a rematch of the second game in the round robin as it pitted Yorkton against Saskatoon
Lakewood. Just like the first time they met, this was an entertaining back and forth game which saw Yorkton take the lead early in the game on a goal by Leia Zulyniak. Saskatoon came back to tie the game just before half time. The second half of the match was back and forth with strong play from both sides. After regulation the score was still tied 1-1. The teams then played two five minute overtime periods in which either team was unable to capitalize on chances, thus meaning a shootout would decide the outcome of the Final. Unfortunately Saskatoon was able to win
the shootout and claim the gold medal, but overall both the teams and the fans were the victors in the well played exciting display of soccer. This was a great accomplishment for this team that was very young and included 4 players from the Under 12 team and the first Provincial competition for many others. The leadership provided by Allison Berge, Darrian Desjarlais and Leia Zulyniak combined with the strong play all weekend from the other members of the team was a great testament to the character and skill level of the entire team.

Protect yourself against equipment fire Farm equipment is a costly investment – and it might surprise you to know that a lot of machinery is damaged or destroyed by fire each year. “Farmers know the key to keeping the farm productive and running smoothly is preventing equipment problems and this requires proper foresight, care and maintenance,” said John Jenner, the vice president of marketing and communications at Western Financial Group. “Fires can have devastating effects on expensive pieces of machinery and on the overall productivity of the farm. During a busy season, the
loss of productivity isn’t an option for farmers.” Three simple practices can help farmers significantly reduce this risk, as follows: Clean Your Equipment Crop residue can build up quickly, especially in dry conditions. Check around engines, exhaust systems, belts and chains for crop residue, grease, dirt and dust. If possible, use a pressure washer each day to clean inside your machine; you can also use a leaf blower to clean your equipment while in the field. A few minutes spent on cleaning your equipment daily can prevent wasted time waiting for a

machine to be repaired. Refuel Safely Always be sure your machine is completely shut down before you refuel. Let the engine cool for 10 minutes before you begin. If fuel spills on the engine, wipe the area thoroughly and let the fumes dissipate. AUCTIONS

Never store fuel in a container that was not meant to hold it. Perform Routine Maintenance Farm equipment is worked hard and needs to be checked often to ensure it continues running well. Check your machine for leaking fluids, damage to the exhaust system, worn belts, faulty electrical wires or worn moving parts that have not been lubricated properly. When you find a problem, fix it immediately. Equipment fires can occur quickly if there is friction inside the machine. Also, heat and sparks from a faulty exhaust system can easily ignite dry crop residue or nearby plants. Consider installing a spark arrester to catch burning particles. Protect Yourself with Insurance “Despite our best efforts, sometimes equipment fires happen,” Jenner continued. “That is why it’s important for farmers to make sure that equipment is included in their farm insurance policy. Insurance can help you cover the cost of a very expensive machine and keep your farm productive if the worst happens.” More information is available online at www. westernfinancialgroup.ca.
