E. coli case linked to recall

WARMER TEMPS ARE ON THE WAY – There’s plenty of snow on the ground but Spring is getting closer with each passing day. Above, local Yorkton photographer Ryan Crouse recently captured a beautiful shot of a Bohemian Waxwing – the first time he’s seen such a species in his yard.

C

A case of E. coli infection in Saskatchewan has been linked to a national recall of frozen beef burgers. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall of frozen beef burgers distributed in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories on February 19, after the products caused illnesses due to E. coli infection. The Saskatchewan case occurred in Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region and was likely contracted prior to the recall. The individual affected is recovering. Frozen beef burgers included in the recall (Gourmet Meat Shoppe and Butcher’s Brand) should either be returned to the location of purchase or discarded. Consumers are reminded to take simple steps to reduce their risk of E. coli infection. “All meat should be cooked thoroughly, and anyone handling or preparing food should thoroughly wash their hands first,” Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab says. Symptoms of E. coli infection include severe abdominal pain, watery or bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and headaches. Symptoms usually appear within three to four days but can occur up to ten days later and last five to ten days. People most at risk of developing serious complications from E. coli are pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems, young children and the elderly.

Saskatchewan travels to recruit skilled workers A delegation of Saskatchewan employers is in Ireland to recruit high-skilled workers to this province. The Ministry of the Economy and 13 employers are attending the Working Abroad Expo in Dublin March 2 and 3, Cork on March 6, and some will also exhibit in Man-

chester, United Kingdom March 9 and 10. More than 10,000 qualified candidates in fields including trades, engineering and health sciences are expected to attend the fairs. “There is significant labour mobility in Ireland and a high unemployment rate,” Economy

Minister Bill Boyd says. People are looking for jobs and Saskatchewan has a labour shortage. It’s a perfect opportunity for us to fill critical, high-skilled positions that have not been successfully filled by recruitment initiatives in Canada.” Saskatchewan welcomed

more than 290 Irish families to the province following the 2012 recruitment mission to Ireland. Based on last year’s success, employers expressed interest in returning to that country hoping to recruit at least 80 highskilled workers for positions such as heavy duty mechanics,

welders, engineers and machinists among other occupations. Saskatchewan’s labour shortage is a barrier to economic growth for industry, small business and communities. Saskatchewan is forecast to need between 75,00090,000 new workers in the next five years.

Local awarded Diamond Jubilee

Dr. Fay Myers, President of the Parkland College, has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. The commemorative medal marks the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. The Government of Canada is celebrating this milestone by honouring 60,000 outstanding Canadians for their contributions or distinguished service to their fellow citizens, to their community and to their country. Myers was chosen for this honour after being nominated by the Parkland College Board of Governors. Her career in adult education spans over 25 years through various roles with the regional colleges of Saskatchewan, central govern-

ment, and positions on many boards and task forces contributing to the community. Myers has served as President of Parkland College since 1997. Under her leadership, Parkland College has grown in its mandate to provide training and education to adults within the region. The college’s annual budget has more than doubled in her time as president, and twice as many full-time employees are now working to serve the college’s students and business partners. Myers has been instrumental in setting a vision for Parkland

College and post-secondary education in Saskatchewan to train youth – in particular Aboriginal youth – to fully participate in the workforce. In her teachings, research and leadership, Myers demonstrates a love for life-long learning and the ability to lead and develop others in their chosen careers. She portrays a strong work ethic and high expectations for herself and others. In her leadership, time and effort, she distinguishes herself as a leader among those with whom she works throughout the province and nationally.

THE NEWS REVIEW EXTRA - Saturday, March 2, 2013 - Page 3A

Grumpy travelling Ed, my neighbor next door, invited himself along on my recent trip to Saskatoon. At Saskatoon I was picking up my granddaughter for a visit during Spring Break. When Ed travels with me for a round-trip of eight hours, I sure get lots of practice at what I call silent, “Please Lord” prayers. Prayer one started building as we left Melville heading north on Highway 47. It was seven a.m. and Ed relentlessly shared his negative thoughts such as: It was too early. I should have taken the van – it would have been more comfortable. He didn’t have enough leg room. He only had one coffee and a little bit of breakfast. He would have rather left at ten. I was driving too slowly. Then, after a tiny skid, I was driving way too fast on the snowy sections. I prayed silently: Please Lord, Ed needs a nap–put him to sleep. I wish I could tell you Ed fell asleep and napped in his seat until Springside, but he was still grumbling at Foam Lake. I couldn’t wait any longer for God to cause Ed to nod off. I stopped at a highway restaurant feeling sure a second breakfast would sweeten Ed up. Hot coffee and cold beer, are absolutes to Ed. There is no compromise! Ed’s coffee was not hot, but barely lukewarm. He was afraid to send it back, as the waitress made it plain she wasn’t in any mood to serve us. The cook slung our breakfast plates on our table and said, “There are no free refills on coffee and we are out of ketchup.” Then, the six-foot-ten giant yelled at the waitress, “I’m going for a smoke.” Ed wasn’t complaining to him either. Feeding Ed backfired badly. After his lukewarm coffee, cold eggs and day old toast, he was more negative than ever. This led me to formulate in my mind prayer two. Please, Lord, help me to enjoy Ed’s every complaint. Ed’s complaints kept coming and I wish I could say I enjoyed them, but I didn’t. So, in desperation, I decided my prayers must be wrong and I needed to get my third prayer in a better spirit.

Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher

A SOLID RETIREMENT PLAN NEEDS SOLID EXPERTISE

www.accordingtoed.com Please, Lord, help me to be thankful for Ed’s company. We are both negative and complaining – him to me and me to you. Help us to travel safely and be good company to each other. It took a while, but we did travel safely and enjoy each other’s company on the way home. The Bible speaks of having the wrong motives when we ask for things from God. Our prayers do

get focused on what would give us pleasure or what we want. Too many times I have prayed that God would change someone else so they would stop getting on my nerves. God isn’t necessarily in the business of making other folks easy for me or you to like. Prayer is not just what I want, but why I want it. God knows our motives when we pray but we might not see them as selfish.

Invest in our expertise and we will help you plan every step of your retirement. Kris Sapara Investment Advisor kris.sapara@nbc.ca

Night ski a big success Good Spirit XC Ski Club recently hosted it’s 3rd Annual Lamplighter Loppet event. Club members as well as skiers from the Yorkton XC Ski Club, along with ski enthusiast from around the province all came out to the loppet. The Lamplighter Loppet is the only night Loppet in Canada. Most loppets are held during the day with skiers skiing various distances in a non competitive fashion or a race. Loppet Chair Anne Stupak says, “The unique thing about the Good Spirit Lamplighter Loppet is the fact that it is a night event. Each skier must register at the Rec Hall and have a head lantern. From the Rec Hall the trails are set directly to our ski shelter 4.5 km’s down a fairly flat trail. Once skiers reach the shelter they can then head out to ski the more varied terrain for additional km’s. “Most skiers take the chance to rest by the bon fire, before heading out for another loop or two. Yellow Quill again had several young skiers come out to the loppet. The Kids were great and really love to ski the trails and

skiing in the dark seems to add to the fun of the evening. Most skiers put on about 15 to 20 kms’ by the time they head back to the Rec Hall for the 10 pm. deadline. A steaming bowl of chilli and a bun sure tastes so much better after a ski like that!” Stupak says the Good Spirit Lamplighter Committee, would like to see the Lamplighter Loppet become a premier xc ski attraction, bring skiers from all over the provinces to come and enjoy the wonderful trail system that we have out at Good Spirit. “We have the best groomed trails, thanks to our dedicated head groomer Darryl Stevenson and his crew. The trails combined total 20 kms and are well treed and so skiers are protected from some of winters harsher winds.” Good Spirit XC Ski Club has grown to almost 100 ski members. The Good Spirit XC Ski Club members come from all over the area, Canora, Yorkton, Saltcoats, Springside and as far away as Saskatoon. All are invited to go out and try the trails. Call Anne Stupak at 783-6617 for more information.

MELNECHENKO - Melvin Leo (Mel) passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 73 years of age. Mel was born September 18, 1939 near Sheho, SK. He was the son of George and Kay (nee Pekush) Melnechenko. He grew up on the family farm in the Sheho district and attended Pohorlowitz school. At an early age he moved with his family to the Rokeby district. He attended Yorkton Collegiate Institute. Mel worked at Case IH, then he travelled, selling for Sherwin Williams Paints. He married Shirley Gehring August 4, 1962. They had 3 children, Curtis, Cindy and Kevin. In the 1970s he owned a ladies wear store. He also opened a vehicle dealership called Yorkton Truck & Auto Sales, later renamed Dunleath Motors. He spent many many years travelling to Alberta to the dealer auctions to buy vehicles. June 24, 2000 he married Carol Miller and they bought a house in Calder and moved it into Yorkton. Mel wanted to spend more time at home, so he started buying cars and trucks on the internet and doing less travelling. He enjoyed tinkering with and selling vehicles, hunting, fishing, golfing, dancing, playing pool, going to auction sales and playing cards. He was a gentle and caring man. He loved his family and would do anything for them. Mel was predeceased by his parents, George and Kay, his sister-in-law Sandy Melnechenko and his stepson Bryan Woloschuk. He leaves to mourn his passing and celebrate his life, his loving wife, Carol; his son Curtis (Margo) and their children Colby and Breanna; his daughter Cindy Fisher (Aaron) and their children Amanda, Kendra (Murray) and Bryce; and his son Kevin (Joanne) and stepdaughter Josee; his great grandson, Tavon Fisher; his stepdaughters, Brenda Woloschuk and her daughter Amanda and Barb Woloschuk and her children Raeghan and Dylan; his brothers Wilmer and Bernie, a niece, nephew, cousins, uncles and aunts and extended family. The funeral service was held Friday, March 1, 2013 with Rev. Molly Kitchen presiding. Soloist, Kendra Fisher. Urn bearers, Mel's sons, Curtis and Kevin. Interment of cremains took place in the Garden of St. Luke at Yorkton Memorial Gardens. Bailey's funeral home was in charge of arrangements. The family wishes to thank everyone for their support, many messages on facebook, acts of kindness and attendance at this service. "Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings in Heaven where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy"
