Deadline fast approaching

Saskatchewan producers are reminded the deadline to enrol in Crop Insurance or make changes to their current contract is March 31. “We are providing record funding, record coverage levels and further program improvements to help producers mitigate risk,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart says. “I strongly encourage all producers to consider Crop Insurance as part of their management plans this year, particularly with the late spring and snowfall levels throughout the province.” The 2013 Crop Insurance Program includes record funding of $198 million, up from $177 million in 2012, and an increase in funding of 91 per cent since 2007. Coverage levels are a record $194 per

acre on average, up from $174 per acre in 2012 and more than double the coverage offered in 2007. With record coverage and continued Crop Insurance enhancements, there will be no ad-hoc AgriRecovery Program for weather-related disasters in 2013. Producers are encouraged to contact their local Crop Insurance office about how program features and options, such as the Unseeded Acreage Buy-Up Option, can help meet their risk management needs. The deadline for customers to apply for, make changes to or cancel a Crop Insurance contract is March 31, 2013. Information is available at any Crop Insurance office, at www.saskcropinsurance. com.

Motorcycle insurance rate increase to see a cap Following concern from motorcycle owners regarding significant insurance rate hikes proposed by SGI, Minister responsible for SGI Donna Harpauer has asked the corporation to amend its rate proposal to cap increases for motorcycles at 15 per cent. In addition, Harpauer has

directed SGI to review its rating approach for motorcycles, including the injury benefit levels provided in the insurance coverage, and to examine ways to improve motorcycle safety programs. “We heard loud and clear from the motorcycle community that the proposed increases would

cause unreasonable financial hardship for bike enthusiasts, and could negatively impact business owners who deal in motorcycle and related equipment sales,” Harpauer comments. Under SGI’s revised proposal increases for motorcycles with annual rates greater than $1,000 will be capped at a maxi-

mum of 15 per cent. Motorcycles with annual rates of $1,000 or less will be subject to a dollar cap instead of a percentage cap, with a maximum increase of $150 annually. SGI will undertake formal consultations with motorcycle stakeholders in the spring, but in the meantime any comments

or feedback on the rating structure for motorcycles, safety programs or benefit levels can be sent to motorcycles@sgi.sk.ca. The proposed rates for all vehicles will be revised to accommodate the new capping guideline, and the revised rates will be posted on SGI’s website at www.sgi.sk.ca.

Stinks to high heaven Ed, my neighbor next door, popped over to our house at the wrong time last week. When he arrived, there was the smell of burnt rubber in the living room. I had been vacuuming the carpet and had run over a loose strand from the carpet which kept unraveling and getting tangled in the vacuum brush. As I was slow in figuring out what was going on, the vacuum was smoking from an over-heated belt by the time I got it shut off. The situation was a tad tense, as my wife was sure I was going to have the vacuum burning before I got it shut off. Ed didn’t ease the tension one bit. “Boy the rubber is burning in here today,” he said. “That sure does stink, but at least you won’t smell my feet when I take off my boots,” he said, making himself at home. It turned out he was returning our two syrup bottles he had borrowed and was hoping for a coffee. Ed never has one coffee, so my wife put a pot of coffee on to brew while I sprayed the living room with Glade. We went from the smell of burnt rubber to lavender and, of course, Ed said he liked the smell of burnt rubber better than lavender. I told him to smell the coffee percolating. Ed informed us he isn’t one to smell much, but he can tell the difference among cigarette, pipe and cigar smoke. He likes the smells of gasoline and cedar. Only three smells really bother him, the first two being the spray of a

Most of all, Ed hates the smell of newly cut lawn which makes him think of rotten eggs. To me, the two smells are completely different and could not be confused. Ed said that as a lad on his family farm, he had to cut the lawn and then carry water, to water a row of small trees planted around the farm house. Their farm water was sulfurous and smelled like rotten eggs, so when he smells cut grass, he smells rotten eggs. I told Ed it could be a lot worse. There is a famous poem by Barbara Hyett, a survivor of Auschwitz, who said in her poem; “You can block out all the senses except smell.” Ed asked, “So what does she prove?” “As prisoners in the death camps, they had no choice but to smell the stench of fellow prisoners being burnt in the gas chambers,” I said. Ed just said that I should quit reading such depressing stuff. In the Old Testament, God ordained worship to include sweet fragrances and pleasing smells. They included oil for lamps, spices for anointing-oil and fragrant

incense. The burning of incense and the smoke from animal sacrifices were sweet fragrances lifting up to God. In the New Testament, scripture calls us to make our lives a fragrant aroma and a living sacrifice to God. The exact words are, “God in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads in every place the fragrance that comes from knowing him. For we are the aroma of Christ, to God, among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.” As Christians, do we smell like fresh baked bread or rotten eggs?

Local couple wins adventure

When the World Ag Expo got underway in Tulare, Calif. last month, a few lucky growers experienced it first-hand thanks to Parrish & Heimbecker. By booking seed and crop protection with Parrish & Heimbecker, growers in Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan were entered in the Canola Rewards contest. Winners from each region received airfare, hotel, entrance to the World Ag Expo and much more. The World Ag Expo provided a unique chance to take in the Golden State. “The Expo was surrounded by a different form of agriculture than we’re used to – vineyards, olives, oranges, lemons, and almonds,” says John Devos, Manager, Seed and Crop Protection at Parrish & Heimbecker. The group also spent two days in San Francisco, visiting Alcatraz, the Golden Gate bridge and more. “It was better than I expected – the water, the views, the houses built up on the side of the hills, the scenic countryside – I could move there,” says Dale Griffith, who, along with his wife Joan won a trip through the Yorkton, SK facility. While a Napa Valley excursion to the family-run Goosecross Cellars winery gave contest winners a chance to talk a different kind of crop. “The bottom line is they’re the same as us,”

We support agriculture Finance Minister Ken Krawetz recently introduced the 2013-14 provincial budget, Balanced Growth, which is characterized by fiscal responsibility and a strong, growing economy that allows investment into the quality of life for all Saskatchewan people. The budget includes a continued focus on farmers and ranchers. The 2013-14 Agriculture Budget is $406.9 million, the fourth largest Agriculture budget ever announced. The 2013 provincial Crop Insurance budget is a record-high $198 million. This is the largest in the history of the program, and a 91 per cent increase since 2007. Our government continues to fully fund business risk management programs (Crop Insurance, AgriStability and AgriInvest) upfront so that farmers and ranchers can head into the growing season knowing their government continues to support them. While funding for AgriStability and AgriInvest has decreased, some of those savings have been reinvested into strategic areas that will help the agriculture sector be more competitive in the long term. In 2013-14, the Ministry of Agriculture will provide more than $70 million for strategic initiatives through the federal-provincial Growing Forward 2 framework, an increase of $25 million

over the previous framework. Areas of focus include rural water infrastructure, trade and market development and farm business management. I believe the renewed focus in these areas will help farmers and ranchers be more competitive and create long-term benefits. Further details of Growing Forward 2 programming will be announced in April. Our government continues our commitment to agriculture research through a record-high $27.7 million research budget, an increase of 104 per cent since 2007. This includes a $3 million investment in the Global Institute for Food Security. The 2013-14 Agriculture budget also includes $1 million for irrigation bridge rehabilitation to support the long-term growth of irrigation in the province. In addition, the provincial government will continue to provide industry assistance grants and funding to control pests, such as beavers, rats and gophers. Agriculture continues to be one of the most promising sectors of our economy, and Saskatchewan farm and ranch families are the backbone of the industry. The initiatives in this budget will help provide balanced growth and long-term benefits for the industry and our province.

Record funding for crops Record Crop Insurance funding and increased funding for strategic investments were among the highlights of the Saskatchewan Agriculture budget of $406.9 million for 2013-14. Crop Insurance coverage levels will increase to a record $194 per acre on average in 2013, more than double the coverage offered in 2007. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture recently hosted an Agricultural Awareness Summit. The summit brought together leaders in agriculture, communications, business and technology to discuss the opportunities that exist to engage the general public in a discussion about the realities and opportunities of agriculture in Canada. While many ideas were discussed, some of the themes that kept resurfacing were perception, values, trust, transparency and communication. Participants also agreed that agriculture awareness needs national attention. The conference prompted those in agriculture to understand the way that their industry is viewed by the public and to explore the ways in which this perception was formed. Those present expressed a desire for the public to understand that they share a strong values system of respecting and caring for the animals on their farms and in being stewards of the environment, not because it is required by government agencies, but because they genuinely care for the earth and understand their connection to and responsibility for it. Caring for the environment is not a burden on producers, it is a necessary and integral part of a sustainable agriculture business. The summit also discussed the importance of transparency in agricultural operations and the value of allowing people to see first hand the realities of food production and what actually takes place on a farm so that they can form opinions of agriculture based on reality and fact. Moving forward, the summit concluded, agriculture must not only do more to increase the outputs from a farm, but also to engage in confident conversations, share its vision of a safer and healthier planet, nurture and respect the trust that people have in producers and our overall food system and allow the public to see

more of not only what the agricultural industry does, but also understand how and why they do it. Today, farms produce more food, more reliably, and in greater volume than at any point in human history. Modern agriculture is a science-based field with an abundance of diversified career opportunities from food production to biotechnology, engineering and more. The Agriculture Awareness Summit was the first step on the journey to help the public understand the industry’s benefits. The agriculture industry is responsible for feeding more than seven billion people on our planet. However, our growing urban population is losing touch with its agricultural roots. Studies show that the general population increasingly does not understand where our food comes from or the economic and environmental benefits that modern agriculture provides.

As cereal grains go, barley is a winner when it comes to good nutrition. This centuries-old grain is packed with fibre, is naturally low in fat, and contains important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Canadians looking to lower their blood cholesterol may soon be choosing food products that contain barley. This summer, Health Canada officials accepted an application submitted by the Alberta Barley Commission for a health claim linking the consumption of barley betaglucan to lowering blood cholesterol. Dr. Nancy Ames and her team at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, contributed to the scientific work backing up this claim and summarized all evidence for the petition to Health Canada. The barley health claim is based on scientific data showing that the consumption of at least three grams of beta-glucan per day helps reduce cho-

lesterol, which is a risk factor for heart disease. Beta-glucan is a type of soluble fibre found in barley. Suitable barley food products can now include labels with statements regarding the recognized health benefit. To use this claim, the food must contain at least one gram of beta-glucan from barley grain products per serving and consumers would need to choose three of such servings to obtain the minimum daily intake for lowering cholesterol. Barley grain products include dehulled or hulless barley, pearl barley, barley flakes, grits, meal, flour, and bran, as well as beta-glucan enriched milling fractions. Ames believes that the barley health claim gives credibility to barley as a healthy food option. There is real potential to increase consumer demand for barley food products, giving farmers incentive to grow more food-grade barley and opening up new market opportunities for both producers

and processors. This success shows how government and industry work together for the benefit of the agricultural sector and all Canadians. “One of the benefits of the new health claim is to educate consumers about the link between diet and health,” says Ames, “and help them include barley in their daily food choices.” Ames’ research team analyzed many barley samples from Canadian processors to validate beta-glucan levels and check potential levels in various recipes and serving sizes. AAFC barley breeders and others have developed several barley varieties with a focus on maximizing beta-glucan content for food use. Consumers can enjoy barley in a variety of delicious and nutritious foods to help reduce cholesterol, which is a risk factor for heart disease. Dr. Chantal Hamel is passionate about organisms humans can’t see with the naked eye. Her goal is to improve crops by managing tiny microorganisms found in soil and the plants themselves. These organisms have the potential to increase crop yields while allowing for a reduction in the use of fertilizers. Hamel, who earned her Ph.D. in crop physiology from McGill University, has performed her research at the Semiarid Prairie Agricultural Research Centre (SPARC) in Swift Current, SK since 2003. Her area of expertise is plant microbiology, the study of how microscopic organisms harm or benefit plants. The world’s population is now at seven billion and growing and demand for food is growing with it. Farmers use fertilizers to increase yields, but the resources used to make fertilizers – phosphate and fossil fuels – are nonrenewable and their use can pose environmental challenges. “In nature, you have plants that do perfectly well and they aren’t cared for with fertilizer or pesticide,” comments Hamel. “They are not planted in rows, protected, or irrigated. How come our crops are not more efficient?” Hamel is working to answer that question using endophytes, bacteria and fungi that live in the plant without causing disease. Endophytes are diverse, and can potentially stimulate crop growth. Most of them have not yet been identified by scientists, so their full potential remains to be discovered. Once an endophyte is identified as beneficial, it is called a “plant-growthpromoting microorganism.” Hamel and her colleagues at SPARC have already identified three types of bacteria with promising results. When a chickpea plant is stressed due to drought, flooding, disease, or excessive heat, it produces ethylene gas, which hinders growth. However, with the addition of the three bacteria the plants produce less ethylene when they’re stressed, so growth is less likely to slow. The three bacteria recently discovered by Dr. Hamel and her colleagues are not yet well understood by scientists. There are, however, soil bacteria, such as Rhizobia, that have been stud-

ied thoroughly and are well recognized for their contribution to cropping systems. Rhizobia helps legumes, crops such as lentils, chickpeas, and alfalfa, access nitrogen more efficiently, which leads to improved nitrogen levels in soil. This encourages crop growth. Some scientists suggest using soil inoculants, adding bacteria or fungi to the soil, to improve crop growth. Others, like Hamel, believe there are plenty of microorganisms already present in the field. We simply need to learn to better manage them. “Plants are amazing organisms,” says Hamel. “They can’t walk away when there’s danger so, instead, they produce lots of phytochemicals – naturally occurring chemical compounds. That’s why lots of medicine comes from plants. They produce different chemicals to repel foes and call upon microbial friends.” This is why the SPARC wheat breeding program is looking at developing genotypes that have the special ability to benefit from, and multiply beneficial microorganisms in the soil. Farmers wouldn’t have to purchase inoculants to add to the soil because the benefits would already exist in the planted seeds. Similar research is also being conducted using chickpeas. “Before, it was not necessary to worry beyond fertilizer,” concludes Hamel. “But now, we must find something else. Now, we have to think of something new.”

A Saskatoon company definitely has an open mind about the future of flax fibre. In Europe, flax fibre is used to manufacture everything from clothing to high-end tennis racquets. It isn’t just another grain in your morning cereal anymore! Canadian flax producers typically focus on flax seed and discard the tough straw fibre, often by burning it in the field. Flax fibre research has been conducted for many years on the prairies to determine the properties of the oil seed flax straw fibre and its potential uses; however, its use in consumer products has been limited. Now a Canadian company has found another innovative use for it. Open Mind Developments, based in Saskatoon, is using flax fibre to create environmentally friendly products. In September 2011, Open Mind started selling their iPhone 4 and 4S cases made from flax fibre and plant-based biopolymers, instead of crude oil-based conventional polymers. The company’s founder, Jeremy Lang, is familiar with agriculture in the province. He grew up in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and in 2000 graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. “I always thought that flax was an interesting crop, due to the unique properties of its oil and fibre,” Lang says. “I know that Europeans grow flax for the fibre alone, while in Saskatchewan the flax straw often gets burned as it is difficult to manage in the field -- I just wanted to find a niche market where the flax fibre could be used to add value to a product, so we could use it instead of burning it.” The iPhone cases are for sale online on the company’s website and customers in Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia have already bought them. Lang hopes the cases will soon be available in wellrecognized retail stores including Best Buy and the Apple Store.

Since the use of natural fibres is not limited to smart phone cases, the opportunity for growth is huge. Flax fibre can be used in tractor fenders, car dashboards, decking and fencing materials, clothing, and insulation. “This is the starting point that will lead to the development of other natural products and potentially a natural fibre-based product manufacturing industry in Saskatchewan,” Lang says. He adds that the company plans on building a processing and manufacturing facility in rural Saskatchewan in the long-term future. Perhaps this Saskatchewan company will one day manufacture tennis racquets and bicycle frames using flax fibre, too. Funding for this project was provided in part by the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program through the Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan and through the Saskatchewan AgriValue Initiative, part of the Growing Forward suite of programming.

Farm and rural households are important members of a municipality and need to be aware of the potential risks in their community and how they might better prepare to manage when disaster strikes. The potential threat of flooding this spring highlights important aspects of emergency preparedness, and residents should ask themselves some basic questions: • Am I prepared to be self-sufficient for up to 72 hours if the disaster strikes and outside help is not readily available? • If there is flooding in our area, how might it impact my property? Have I taken a good look around my property to identify potential risks or impacts?

• Have I done everything possible to minimize the impact of flooding if it comes? Such as moving equipment or stockpiling a bit of sand or gravel? • Do I have any sensitive systems or equipment that might need special protection? • Are all my important documents and cherished family items protected in case the water reaches the house? Is there anything in the basement that should be lifted off the floor or moved upstairs? • Do I need to build up some earth protection or do some sandbagging in low areas? • Do I have a back-up plan if I am forced to leave my home and property for a time?

Protecting livestock during a flood Climatic extremes, such as excessive moisture, can cause major challenges for agricultural operations in Saskatchewan. In the event of a flood, preparedness for livestock producers requires examination of a wide range of management practices. Although preparedness for each producer may vary due to location, experience, resources and type of operation, there are some common steps to take. These include: 1. Identify emergency resources: In case of a flood, have emergency plans in place to protect your livestock. The plan should include a list of telephone numbers that may be needed before, during or after the flood. 2. Ensure animal identification: Visible identification is needed even if animals are not transported. Livestock can be identified if they escape to another pasture. 3. Restrict access to dangerous areas: Move livestock to higher ground and deny access to flood prone pastures, barns or other shelters. Livestock drown because they refuse to leave flooded shelters. Move livestock before floodwaters start to rise. Rescuing livestock in deep, freezing water and ice is dangerous for the livestock owner.

4. Supply food and water: The emergency plan should include options for feeding and watering animals if existing resources are contaminated during a flood. Trucking water into holding areas may be required. Move feed to higher ground ahead of the flood. It will be easier to remove snow to access feed than trying to access it during a flood. 5. Remove potential contaminants: Flood waters often contaminate soils, animal feed supplies and fresh water sources by carrying chemicals, fertilizers, trash and other debris from their original containers. Label all hazardous materials and place them in a safe location. 6. Check for fire hazards: Plan to remove all fuels and turn off electricity to barns and buildings.

Anthrax: plan now Anthrax is an infectious disease occurring primarily in grazing animals. Death can occur very rapidly and the first clue of anthrax infection is often animals found suddenly dead on pasture. In the past, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) responded to anthrax cases with various control activities and support. As of April 1, 2013, the CFIA will no longer respond to anthrax cases. What does this mean to producers and veterinarians? Prevention is even more important and a plan for diagnostics and disposal should be in place on every farm. Anthrax vaccination is very effective in preventing infections. The risk of anthrax should be assessed for each premises by looking at geographic location, information on past cases, weather pat-

terns and species raised. Historically, sporadic cases have occurred across the prairies and there are pastures where anthrax cases are known to have occurred in the past. Where risk of anthrax exists, anthrax vaccination is recommended three to four weeks before exposure. Early detection is important to reduce deaths. Animals on pasture should be observed regularly and if unexplained deaths occur, veterinary advice should be sought. If anthrax is suspected, the veterinarian will submit samples to a laboratory for testing. In cases of anthrax, post mortems should be avoided or done very carefully to reduce contamination. When anthrax bacteria are exposed to air, they form resistant spores that can survive for decades in soil. When these spores are eaten by graz-

ing livestock, disease and death can occur, and the cycle continues. While vaccination is the key to prevention, proper carcass disposal is the key to control. Carcasses should be protected from scavenging, which spreads spores over a wide area. Covering carcasses with heavy plastic can deter predators and is a useful temporary measure. Complete burning of carcasses is the preferred disposal method, as high temperatures will destroy anthrax spores. Burial can be used when burning is not possible, but spores will remain viable and can be a source of further infections if they are exposed by digging, flooding or erosion in the future. Sask. agri-food exports lead the nation

Canada’s top agri-food exporting province for the second year in a row For the first time ever, Saskatchewan exported more than $11 billion in agri-food products in 2012, and remains the nation’s top agri-food exporter. In total, Saskatchewan accounted for 23 per cent of Canada’s agri-food exports in 2012. “Saskatchewan farmers and ranchers continue to provide safe, reliable and high quality agri-food products here at home and around the world,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart comments. “Our government continues to invest in areas such as market development and research to create opportunities for our producers to increase our agriculture exports in the future.” The Saskatchewan Plan for Growth includes a goal to increase agrifood exports to $15 billion

by 2020. The record $11.1 billion in 2012 agri-food exports is an increase of nine per cent over 2011, and an increase of 75 per cent since 2007, representing a significant step in achieving this goal. Agriculture continues to have a major impact on the province’s economy, accounting for over one third of all provincial exports. Canola seed continues to be the top agrifood export at $2.7 billion in 2012. Canola seed exports have increased 25 per cent since last year and 215 per cent since 2007. Other top agri-food exports in 2012 included wheat ($2 billion), canola oil ($1.7 billion), durum ($1.2 billion) and lentils ($673 million). “We have been able to expand opportunities for producers to grow existing and emerging markets like India and China thanks to several trade missions where agriculture featured prominent-

ly,” Minister responsible for Trade Tim McMillan said. “We will continue our work to secure improved access and ensure Saskatchewan’s agri-food exports benefit from the growing demand in these markets.” Saskatchewan agrifood products have a larger reach than ever before, providing the majority of the mustard found in France’s Dijon mustard products, the majority of the oats in Cheerios cereal and the majority of the world’s entire trade of peas and canary seed. The top five markets for Saskatchewan agriculture products are the United States, China, Japan, Mexico and India. In 2012, 18 countries each purchased more than $100 million in Saskatchewan agrifood exports, making Saskatchewan agriculture one of the most significant providers of food around the world.

Horse health reminders

Clinic, show and event season is soon arriving and horse owners are reminded to have their horses tested for Equine Infectious Anemia, also known as “swamp fever.” Between 2002 and 2010, there were only six cases detected in Saskatchewan horses. The decrease in Equine Infectious Anemia led many in the equine industry to believe this disease was no longer a problem in the province. This was untrue. In 2011, more than 100 horses were infected and, in 2012, 82 cases were confirmed. Transmission of Equine Infectious Anemia occurs through the transfer of contaminated blood from one animal to another. Insects, such as horse flies and deer flies, aid in the spread of the disease. There is no vaccination to prevent Equine Infectious Anemia and there is no cure. Once infected, horses remain carriers for life. It is essential that all horses be tested to identify carrier animals and prevent the further spread of this disease.

Many of these horses developed neurological disease and either died or were euthanized due to the severity of the disease. Soybeans in Sask.

Interest in growing soybeans in Saskatchewan is increasing. At a recent Pulse Workshops held in February, a popular question among farmers was, “Can I grow soybeans in my area?” It is not an easy question to answer; however, it seems inevitable that soybean acreage is likely to increase in 2013. Kevin Elmy is an advocate for growing soybean in Saskatchewan. Elmy has conducted soybean trials on his farm near Saltcoats for more than 11 years now and expects a good crop of soybean each year. Experience is a factor in his benefit and learning from Elmy is invaluable. Elmy indicated that variety selection is the most important factor determining whether to grow soybean or not. He likes the American method of variety selection using the “00” nomenclature rather than the Corn Heat Unit (CHU) method currently used in Canada. Elmy says he finds soybean equally sensitive to heat and daylight. So, it is imperative that you find a variety that will do best for your region using these criteria. The 2012 season was very good for soybean production with plentiful heat units and an open fall without frost, but such weather is unlikely to occur every year. Soybean varieties require 120 days to mature and heat and daylight must be favourable for the crop to finish properly. Check your regional climatic data for average frost-free days.

Saluting Agriculture

Marketing soybean may be accomplished through grain brokers who deal with this commodity. There are brokers and buyers in Saskatchewan with information about pricing and delivery options. Elmy says that most of the soybean grown in Saskatchewan is shipped to the United States. Buyers of food soybean look at quality factors such as: percentage greens, shape, cracked seeds, and un-threshed pods in the sample. Although not a pulse crop, soybean is included within the pulse crops that the Ministry supports. The Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG) also include soybean under their umbrella of interest. Currently, the Crop Development Centre (CDC) in Saskatoon experiments with soybean and is looking for new sources of germplasm to develop varieties better suited for Saskatchewan conditions.

New uses for vegetable oil

As all farmers know, disease and adverse weather can reduce a promising crop by several grades, leaving the producer to find a market for the lower-quality product. Typically, the lower-grade crops are sold as livestock feed. While the oil from lower-grade or damaged canola may not be suitable for the human food market, it can be turned into a variety of biofuels and biolubricants. Unfortunately, these canola-based products currently do not have a significant share of the market, in part, due to their higher manufacturing costs and less-desirable physical and chemical properties compared to petroleumbased products. Until now. Recent work by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Strategic Research Program (SRP) Chair for Lipid Quality and Utilization at the University of Saskatchewan, Dr. Martin Reaney, with financial support from the Agriculture Development Fund (ADF), has developed new processing technology that improves both the production efficiency and the effectiveness of the potential biolubricant end-product. Canola oil contains glycerol, which makes its products prone to breaking down under extreme heat and to coagulate under extreme cold. When it is converted into biodiesel the glycerol is removed. The biodiesel can be converted into biolubricants with superior properties. A chemical catalyst is used to produce the stable polyol biolubricant. The chemical currently being used as a catalyst – an alkoxide – is expensive and hazardous to transport. The goal of the project was to find a better way to synthesize a superior polyol-based biolubricant. The researchers discovered that potassium carbonate – a component of potash – is a highly cost-effective replacement for the current catalyst. As an added benefit, they found a way to turn linoleic acid, trapped in byproducts of biodiesel production, into conjugated linoleic acid, a compound found in meat and dairy products that may help fight cancer. The researchers also determined the oilseed genetics that produced biodiesel and biolubri-

cant with the best possible cold-flow and pour-point characteristics. This is important if the eventual products are to be used in colder climates such as Saskatchewan. The information was passed on to oilseed breeders so they can develop varieties specifically for processing into bio-based petroleum replacement products. The work of the University of Saskatchewan on this project has benefits for a variety of industrial sectors. Bi fuel producers have a more cost-effective way of producing biolubricants, and they have a new market for a previously valueless by-product. Plant breeders have the data to develop new varieties specifically for the biofuel industry. And canola producers should find better demand for their lowergrade crops in the biofuel sector. The Agriculture Development Fund provides funding to institutions, companies and industry organizations to help them conduct research, development and value-added activities in the agriculture and agri-food sector. The results produce new knowledge, information and choices in technologies, techniques and varieties for farmers, ranchers, processors and input suppliers, to improve the competitiveness of Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector. In 2013, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture committed $9.9 million in new funding for 61 ADF research projects.

Sea-buckthorn berry: the little known super fruit

The sea-buckthorn berry is a littleknown super fruit. The seed and pulp of the berry are loaded with vitamins, particularly C, A, and E. A single seabuckthorn berry has more vitamin C than an entire orange and more vitamin E than a carrot. It also has high levels of beta carotene, omega-3 oils, and flavonoids. Awareness of this nutritious fruit is on the rise. In June 2011, the fruit received positive reviews from Dr. Oz, the popular TV doctor who used to make frequent appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and who now hosts his own program, The Dr. Oz Show. He discussed how the berry may help prevent wrinkles and constipation, and also aid in weight loss. “As soon as the The Dr. Oz Show episode aired, we received phone calls from all around the world about what we’re doing with sea buckthorn,” says Bill Schroeder, Researcher at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s (AAFC) Agroforestry Development Centre (ADC) in Indian Head, Saskatchewan. “We’ve been identified as one of the experts in that area.” Sea buckthorn is a dense, deciduous shrub that can grow up to five metres tall. Its leaves are silvery green in colour, and its branches are typically thorny. The orange berries it produces are edible and have been referred to as the “Siberian pineap-

ple” because of the berries’ taste and juiciness. Originally, the shrub was imported to Canada from Russia in the 1930s as an ornamental plant. On the Canadian Prairies, sea buckthorn has been used primarily in wildlife habitats and shelterbelts to offer fields and farmyards protection from snow and wind. In the not-too-distant future, it is possible that the fruit will be grown on the Prairies more often as a commercial crop, since its nutrient-dense fruit can be used in a wide range of products, such as jams, jellies, liquors, juices, and even skin ointments.

Other countries, mainly China and Russia, have been using sea-buckthorn berries in food products and skin creams for hundreds of years. AAFC scientists are working to increase the commercial potential of sea buckthorn. AC-Autumn Glow, a new sea-buckthorn variety developed by researchers at the ADC, will be released in 2012. It has the potential to propel sea buckthorn into the commercial market because of its high yields and fruit that is easier to harvest than previous varieties. Not only does this variety produce fruit that is almost twice as large as previous sea-buckthorn varieties, but it

is almost thornless, which makes it an easier plant for producers to work with. The berries on AC-Autumn Glow grow from five-millimetre–long stalks attached to the bush’s stem. This results in berries that are easier to hand-pick than previous varieties whose berries grew in tight clusters. Longer stalks, combined with large fruit size, also mean the berries can be harvested mechanically. “I think there’s a real opportunity here,” Schroeder adds. “If growers can efficiently and costeffectively grow sea buckthorn, then a Canadian manufacturing industry around sea-buckthorn products could develop.” AC-Autumn Glow is the result of more than 15 years of research performed by scientists at the ADC. It is the first sea-buckthorn variety to be unveiled by the Centre since 2005, when Orange September and Harvest Moon were released through the Canadian Ornamental Plant Foundation and made available through commercial nurseries. Similarly, farmers who wish to purchase ACAutumn Glow must source it through Canadian commercial nurseries. Perhaps one day, AC-Autumn Glow’s berries – delicious and chock full of nutrients – will become a permanent ingredient in the jams and lotions found in Canadian homes.

No matter how the property changes hands, or to whom, there are current tax implications for the transferor and future tax implications for the recipient. Most parents would like to see their farm business continue in the family. A well designed estate plan will facilitate the transfer of property from one generation to the next and is essential to take optimum advantage of the tax benefits available. How do you create equalization for those family members not continuing to be part of the farm? As the farm is usually the largest asset in the family, it may be difficult to decide how to distribute the estate between those children that will continue farming and non-farming children. As the farm family considers distributing their estate to the next generation, there is the opportunity to pass on the farm to the farming children through rollover provisions in the income tax act. If sufficient life insurance is purchased, payable to the spouse and/or other children as beneficiary(ies), then it is possible to make adequate provisions for them. Using life insurance is the most cost-effective method of ensuring that the non-farming children receive a fair share of the estate, without encumbering the farm assets for the farming children. How do you protect the farm as the next generation starts to farm? Farmers are not immune to risk. they run the risk of losing income and their business if production or yield is low. Their personal health affects their busi-

ness health. Their ability to drive their business is essential not only to the farmer, but to their family. For the next generation that has taken over the farm already, the parents have not completely mitigated their risk by transferring the farm to the children. The risk now lies with the next generation and their health to carry on the farm. Critical illness policies can be held in the corporation on the next generation. Lump-sum critical illness benefits received by the corporation are not taxable and can be used to hire outside help to carry on the operations for a period of time. How do you provide liquidity into the farm operations in drafting the will?

Assume a farmer’s child is to receive the farmland subject to the farmer’s payment of a “reasonable amount” to his or her siblings. When determining an adequate or reasonable amount to be paid to children not participating in the farm operation, a number of factors must be considered. First, the tax-free rollover provision from farmer to child will presumably apply. Therefore, consideration should be given to the fact that the child inheriting the farm takes over all its tax liabilities subject to the use of the capital gains exemption in the hands of the deceased parent. As well, the child receives no benefit for the payments made to the non-farming members. Two other considerations include: growth in value of the farm since the child began working with the parent; and payment received by the non-farming children will be completely free of any income taxes. Therefore, when a farmer considers drafting a will with a similar provision (i.e. farm to one child and cash payment to the others) these facts should be remembered in arriving at the amount of the legacy to the remaining siblings. Under these circumstances, life insurance could be used to help ensure the child inheriting the farm would have the necessary cash to pay his brothers and/or sisters.
