Crop Insurance plan for 2012 unveiled Program will include an Unseeded Acreage Benefit of up to $100 per eligible acre. The 2012 Crop Insurance Program will include an Unseeded Acreage Benefit of up to $100 per eligible acre, as well as another year of record funding and record coverage levels. Last week along with MP Garry Breitkreuz and other dignitaries, Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud was on hand in Melville to unveil the new program. “We have worked closely with the Province of Saskatchewan to expand Crop Insurance coverage for unseedable acres,” said Breitkreuz on behalf of federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. “With stronger and broader coverage, Crop Insurance is now better positioned to help producers manage the risk of excess moisture and flooding. We encourage producers to enroll in Crop Insurance so they are best positioned for the coming growing season.” “We are working to improve the Crop
Insurance program for producers by providing record funding, record coverage levels, an improved Unseeded Acreage Benefit and numerous other program enhancements,” added Bjornerud. “With this year’s program improvements, as well as those we have made over the previous four years, I encourage all producers to consider enrolling in Crop Insurance in 2012.” The 2012 Provincial Crop Insurance budget is at a record high of $177 million says Bjornerud. Coverage levels are increasing to a record high $174 per acre, on average. This is nearly double the average coverage level offered to producers under the previous government in 2007. Since 2008, Crop Insurance has introduced the five largest budgets and highest coverage levels in the program’s history. Continued on Page 2.

New student nutrition plan unveiled By DEVIN WILGER N-R Writer The health of students is vital to their academic success. As a result, the Government of Saskatchewan is introducing a new nutrition guidelines policy, in order to help schools in the province better prepare nutrition programs for their schools. Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz unveiled the new guidelines, entitled Nourishing Minds: Eat Well. Learn Well. Live Well., at Yorkton Regional High School. The guidelines were developed in partnership
– Eat Well. Learn Well. Live Well. ment wants to reduce a downward trend in activity. “We’ve seen a change in what students do in life, and we’re concerned about that. The statistics that have been done about how many students are active, as far as what we would call a normal degree of activity, it’s been declining,” Krawetz emphasizes. One of the goals of the new guidelines is to give

Crop Insurance program for 2012 Continued from Page 1. New in 2012, producers will have the option to supplement the Unseeded Acreage Benefit of $70 per eligible acre by purchasing either $15 or $30 per acre in additional coverage. In addition, the Unseeded Acreage Benefit calculation has also been simplified. Crop Insurance will now also provide coverage to commercial fruit growers for the replacement of Saskatoon bushes, dwarf sour cherry and haskap fruit trees. Yield cushioning is also being extended to include forage crops. This feature limits the impact of consecutive poor growing seasons, such as excess moisture or drought, on a producer’s coverage level. In 2012 establishment benefit values will also increase from $20 to $25 per acre for oats, canary seed, fall rye, spring rye and triticale. Overall, this year’s Crop Insurance Program is expected to provide more options and improved coverage for producers. As a result, there will be no AgriRecovery program for weather-related disasters in 2012. “The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) is pleased Crop Insurance continues to make program improvements,” SARM President David Marit
states. “The increased coverage, enhanced Unseeded Acreage Benefit and other improvements will help producers manage their risk.” “Saskatchewan oat growers will benefit from these continued program improvements, including increased coverage and establishment benefit values, as well as further enhancements to the Unseeded Acreage Benefit,” Saskatchewan Oat Development Commission Chairman Dwayne Anderson adds. “We are pleased Crop Insurance continues to improve its programs to address the needs of producers,” SaskCanola Chair Brett Halstead says. “Record coverage, improved unseeded acreage options and other program improvements will benefit canola producers and our entire industry.” “We welcome these Crop Insurance improvements, especially the introduction of yield cushioning for forage crops, which will benefit forage producers whose production is affected by extreme weather, such as excess moisture or drought,” Saskatchewan Forage Council President Aaron Ivey comments. The deadline for customers to apply for, make changes to, or cancel their Crop Insurance contract is March 31, 2012. Detailed program and contract information is available at any Crop Insurance office,
at www.saskcropinsurance.com or by calling 1-888-935-0000. Under the Growing Forward Agricultural Policy Framework, Crop Insurance is cost-shared on a 60:40 basis between the Government of Canada and Government of Saskatchewan.

YBID Changes By DEVIN WILGER N-R Writer The Yorkton Business Improvement District has seen some changes to the bylaw detailing their operations. First, there will be an annual general meeting, and the board of directors for YBID will now be elected. Second, surplus funds will either be allocated to a project or used to reduce the levy required in the next year. Third, they will no longer be restricted to a $100,000 cap on the amount raised through the levy. The $100,000 grant provided by the city will remain the same. Finally, the YBID map has been revised, and will now include properties on Dracup Avenue as well as lands currently owned by the city adjacent to the Gallagher Centre.

“Legends” to perform in Saltcoats Submitted by WalterFarquharson
The big question for many local people could well be, “How many great performers paying tribute to the ‘greats’ of the music world can you pack into one evening or one afternoon’s entertainment?” When “Legends” returns to the stage of the Saltcoats Community Hall this year on March 9, 10 and 11 for their fifth time in six years, this area may be provided with a probable answer to the query. In any other venue the program would be a steal at double the price. Add delightful meals for Friday and Saturday and scrumptious desserts for Sunday afternoon and you have an offering few could resist. Local organizers report sellouts for Friday and Saturday and tickets beginning to move quite dramatically for the Sunday performance. It is a thrill for all who know her to welcome back Devra Straker who returns home for the 5th Legends at Saltcoats performance. Originally from Saltcoats, Devra now resides in Ottawa with her husband and their fourmonth old baby girl. She has worked in television and film as well as stage across Canada and in the U.S. Select theatre credits include A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline, Dark Star: The Roy Orbison Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Sound of Music, The Rocky Horror Show, and Evita. She is thrilled to be able to help
her community continue to raise funds for numerous organizations within the town and always looks forward to doing the show. Devra will be paying tribute to artists such as Patsy Cline, K. D. Lang, Tina Turner, and Loretta Lynn. Gerrad Everard will be joining the Legends cast for the first time. Gerrad hails from his family’s cattle and grain farm near Wawanesa, Manitoba. He has performed on four continents, over 30 states in the U.S and right across Canada. “ROK 2G0” marks Gerrad’s debut album – a taste of country with a rock ‘n’ roll edge, putting a new spin on 11 legendary songs. The album is dedicated to both Canadian Farmers and Artists and will be available for purchase at the show. Gerrad will be performing artists such as Mick Jagger, Allan Jackson, Elvis, and Little Richard. Kevin Dabbs returns as part of the cast for his 3rd year. Originally from Winnipeg, Kevin now resides in Edmonton with his wife Christine Bandelow. Kevin has toured North America as the drummer with recording artist Mike Plume. He has also performed in countless theatre productions – most recently as the lead in the Mayfield Theatre’s production of the smash hit musical “The Wedding Singer”. Kevin has also recently released his debut CD “Policeman’s Creek” which will be available for purchase at the show. Willie Nelson, Paul McCartney, and Buddy

Holly are just some of the artists Kevin will be seen performing in the upcoming show. Kieran Martin Murphy will be back for his 5th year. Martin has performed on many stages across both Canada and the U.S. as well as television and film. Theatre credits include Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, The Buddy Holly Story, and Jesus Christ Superstar just to name a few. Martin is also part of the trio known as “The Pretenors” in which he portrays the infamous Luciano Pavarotti. They have performed to sold out houses across North America. Martin will be paying tribute to such artists as Roy Orbison, Tom Jones, Joe Cocker, and of course Pavarotti. Christine Bandelow returns for her 4th year as part of the Legends cast. Originally from Calgary, Christine now resides in Edmonton. She has worked in both television and film, and has toured the world as a performer – including performing
for the troops overseas. She has both choreographed and performed in the award winning musical “RENT” in such places as Spain, Mexico, and Montreal. She has performed in numerous other stage productions including West Side Story, The Buddy Holly Story, Oliver! and Cabaret. Christine will be performing artists including Dolly Parton, Marilyn Monroe, and Linda Ronstadt. This is a show not to be passed by. Those who have attended earlier shows know how the artists interact with those attending. The troupe’s professionalism combined with the attractive, convenient and uncrowded venue in which they are performing to appreciative audiences makes these performances occasions that will be talked about for months to come. At double the ticket prices these shows would be a bargain! Call Phyllis McCallum at (306) 744-2990 for details or tickets.

Mentors seen as effective force against bullying: survey
Submitted by the Yorkton BBBS organization
Half of all Canadian adults were bullied as a child or teenager according to a new survey. Moreover, an overwhelming majority of Canadians (85 per cent) believe that providing children and teenagers who bully others with a volunteer mentor is an effective way to reduce bullying. Conducted by Harris/ Decima for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada (BBBSC), the poll examined attitudes about bullying. The survey also studied the value of mentoring as a way to prevent abusive behaviours and help those who are bullied to rebuild their confidence and self-esteem. Survey Findings
The Step Up to Strike Out Bullying Survey sends a clear message: Canadians are deeply concerned about bullying and are prepared to take action to stop it. 95 per cent of Canadians believe they have a responsibility to take action to reduce bullying and its harmful effects. And nine in ten believe that bullying poses a serious threat to the long-term well-being of children and teenagers. The survey also found that the extent of bullying and harm inflicted is startling. Half of all Canadians surveyed said they had been bullied in their youth. Of these, a full third believe that the abuse they suffered had a lasting harmful affect – so it’s no wonder people care so deeply about tackling this hurtful form of abuse. BBBSC commissioned the survey to mobilize Canadians to take action to reduce bullying in their communities. From February through April, Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across Canada will be holding fundraising bowling events that offer people a powerful way to reduce bullying and its hurtful effects in their communities.
ing by getting involved in Bowl for Kids Sake events in their communities. We want Saskatchewanians to know that there is an answer to bullying and that everyone can make a difference by getting involved in Bowl for Kids Sake. To make the case for action, the Step Up to Strike Out Bullying Survey asked Saskatchewanians for their views about bullying and the value of mentoring as a solution. Here are the results: 95 per cent of Manitobans and Saskatchewanians surveyed believe people have a responsibility to take action to stop bullies. (compares to 95 per cent nationally) 76 per cent agree that providing children and teenagers who bully others with a mentor is an effective way to reduce bullying. (compares to 85 per
cent nationally) 84 per cent believe bullying poses a serious long-term threat to the well-being of children and teenagers. (compares to 89 per cent nationally) 54 per cent of Manitobans and Saskatchewanians surveyed were bullied as a child or teenager. (compares to 50 per cent nationally) 50 per cent of those who were bullied believe they would have benefited from having a volunteer adult mentor to help them cope. (compares to 62 per cent nationally) A quarter (23 per cent) think the abuse they suffered had a lasting harmful effect. (compares to 30 per cent nationally) 92 per cent of Manitobans and Saskatchewanians surveyed agree that action to reduce bullying strengthens communities over time. (compares to 87 per cent nationally) “Canadians
universally understand that the friendship and guidance of a mentor is one of the most effective ways to prevent abusive behaviors and help those who have been abused,” says Bruce MacDonald, president of BBBSC. “By giving children and teenagers the guidance they need to become the positive and caring individuals they are capable of being, we can steer them to a positive path in life.” The one-on-one and inschool youth mentoring services provided by volunteer Big Brothers and Big Sisters have proven to be instrumental in reducing bullying and other related negative behaviours such as lack of interest in school; truancy; low selfesteem and drug and alcohol abuse. “We are doing the best we can to stop bullying, but more volunteers and financial resources are needed to get the job
done,” says MacDonald. “Mentoring programs can significantly contribute to reducing bullying and its harmful effects. We invite Canadians to take a stand by participating in the Bowl for Kids Sake event nearest them. BBBSC’s Step Up to Strike Out Bullying Survey was conducted by Harris/Decima via their telephone omnibus between January 5 and January 8, 2012, with a national random sample of 1,034 adult Canadians aged 18 years and over and is considered accurate to within ± 3.1 per cent, 19 times out of 20. Bowl For Kids Sake is slated for Esterhazy on March 31, April 1, 2012 supporting the mentoring programs in Esterhazy, Churchbridge and Langenburg. Then Bowl For Kids Sake is in Yorkton April 20, 21, 22 supporting the Yorkton mentoring programs and Melville,
April 28th at Melville Bowl Arena supporting the Melville mentoring programs. “Prizes will be just as great as in years prior including an opportunity for the highest pledge collector to win a voucher for a trip for two, anywhere West Jet flies in North America,” says Irma Van De Bon, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yorkton and Area. “People who accept this invitation will help local kids today and make their communities stronger tomorrow.” People and businesses can donate to the Bowl for Kids Sake campaign or volunteer to fundraise locally by visiting www. bbbsyorkton.ca. If you want to stop bullying you can contact your local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency for more information about our local Bowl for Kids Sake event or how you can help make a difference.

Try to only speak well of others Ed, my neighbor next door, tells me repeatedly that the greeter position at Walmart stores has to be one of the dumbest jobs ever created. His exact words are, “No one wants someone eyeballing you as you come in the store. People come in to shop - not to say hello to someone they don’t even know. If it was the manager of the whole store standing there, people would be interested, as then they could say they knew the person in charge. People want to know the boss, not somebody who has no authority but to say ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ and ‘thank you’ like a butler.” My answer never satisfies Ed, but it is the truth. I have told Ed that the manager has us say hello for him, as he cannot be everywhere, doing everything. He relies on his staff to be in charge of serving the customers such as by welcoming people on his behalf. It is important to welcome and to extend a thank you to everyone for shopping at our store, because there are plenty of other stores to shop at and we are blessed by the business that our customers give us. I try not to disturb Ed when he comes in the store, but a smile, a nod of the head, and a wave goodbye still make him irritated. Ed has told others that I’m too old to do anything but stand around and talk. Then he adds, “But then again, that is all ministers do so he is used to it.” It is so easy to comment in a negative way about the work of others. Often, our gossip isn’t exactly personal – it is a generalized belief. For example, when I
Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com was a teacher, my brothers who were farmers were sure it was an easy job that any woman could do. It was not a job suitable for a man. In our farming family, the generalized belief was that there was no real work except farming. God commands us in the Bible not to give false testimony against our neighbors. The foundation of this command is our need to
love our neighbors as ourselves. It is hard for us to strive to speak the whole truth, for half truths have a way of easily satisfying us. What we say is often more about us and our beliefs than the person we are talking about. It is hard work to be fair, impartial and honor the reputation of others. It is easy to ruin others without the whole truth. Will we put the best meaning on every-
thing – explain our neighbor’s actions in the best possible way? Love does no harm to its neighbor. What I think about a job may change if I actually do the job. Many jobs seem easy enough until you do them. It isn’t enough to say what I think or feel about a job or another person. I may not have the whole truth or just be very misguided. It is hard to admit I didn’t know what I was talking about but it has happened more than once. We are not God and do not know the whole truth about others or their jobs. Perhaps we should try to only speak well of others or refrain from speaking about them at all.

48 - OBITUARIES
SCHMIDT – Darren James Schmidt, son of Wallace and Sheila Schmidt, passed away February 17, 2012 at age 46. Darren was born March 6, 1965 in Saskatoon. He was the third child born to the family. The family relocated to Yorkton where Darren started Grade One at Angus Spice School. He had many friends and days were spent playing street hockey or having heated snow ball fights on Wallace Ave. From there he attended St. Joe’s and completed Grade 9. He decided to follow the family profession after completing Grade 10 at YRHS. While getting his journeyman’s certificate in refrigeration, he worked at his family’s shop and then for Penguin Refrigeration. It was during this time that he met and fell in love with his life partner, Barb Woloschuk. In 1991 they welcomed their daughter Raeghan and six years later in 1997 their son Dylan. They moved to Weyburn in 1992 where he worked with his dad at Weyburn Refrigeration. The business was bought out by Quality Plumbing & Heating and while working for them Darren injured his back and had to choose a different career. He bought a spray on box liner business. His talent for artistic design was discovered. Many garages and businesses around town sport his artistic talent. I would often get a phone call. Darren would say, “You gotta see this – just take a look – you’re gonna like it, and I would open facebook and there would be a garage floor painted with an incredible piece of art – by Darren. Once he was watching TV and saw an amazing artist that painted fire on vehicles. Knowing I was interested in art, he called right away, “Wendy you have to see this – just take a look, you’re going to like it. I did and he was right. He always remembered other people’s interests and if he came across something he thought you’d like, expect a call. He landed a job on the rigs about a year ago. He was so excited about it. Again he made friends quickly and gave it his all. He liked to drive. He would often take pictures and e-mail them to us of moose and other things that would interest him. He’d phone and say, “Open your e-mail, you got to see this – just take a look – you’ll like it. Darren was a devoted husband, father, son, broth-
er, uncle and friend. He was Barb’s rock and she was his soul-mate. Truly the love of his life. As a father, he was incredible. Last time he was at our house, he started talking about his kids. His eyes teared up as he told us about how proud he was of them. They truly are his greatest joys. He’s was so pleased that Raeghan is doing well at her job and has found someone, Casey, to share her life with. Dylan was his boy. He was excited that soon he’d be able to drive. Cars were another hobby of Darren’s. If you needed one, he’d find it, if you need parts for one, he’d hunt it down. He was busy restoring a ’72 Camaro. At times he’d show up with a vehicle with some sort of fancy options. His new truck was the last one. He was so excited. He came in the house and yet again said with that little grin of his – “You got to see this – just come take a look – you’re gonna like it. Rocky 6599 – his call name for on-line poker. I know Darren and Brad would spend many Saturdays and Sundays trying to master the game and outlast each other. Honey-Do lists were put on hold. He was hooked on Reality TV. Big Brother and Survivor come to mind. He would sign up for the live feeds and before the episode would air, he’d be phoning me wanting to know if I wanted to know who won Head of Household or who got evicted. I’d like to say to Darren. – You left us too soon, too quickly and without a chance to say good-bye. We will miss you. But, I know that right now, you’re checking things out, and when we meet again, you’ll be waiting for us with your little grin and saying “You got to see this, just take a look – you’re gonna like it. Darren was predeceased by his grandparents: Bernie and Kay Lougheed, Adam and Anna Schmidt; brothers-in-law Bryan Woloschuk and Rod Byblow, He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Barb of Weyburn; his children: Raeghan (Casey Drullette),Weyburn, Dylan, Weyburn; his parents, Wally and Sheila Schmidt, Springside; three siblings: Brad (Wendy) Schmidt, Yorkton, Lori (Melvin Hnidey), Springside, Brett (Sherry) Schmidt, Airdrie, AB; his father and motherin-law, Walter (Maggie) Woloschuk,Yorkton, Carol (Mel) Melnechenko, Yorkton; sister-in-law, Brenda Woloschuk, Yorkton as well as several nieces and nephews. Interment of cremains at a later date. Donations in memory of Darren may be made to the Dylan Schmidt Trust, c/o TD Bank, Weyburn Branch. RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn was in charge of arrangement. – Submitted by Wendy Schmidt.
