HELPING HABITAT – Habitat for Humanity helps families get a roof over their head, and the Yorkton Fire Department was putting that roof together at the build on Dracup Ave. Theodore Putland with the department says the group wants to give back to the community, on and off the job. The two builds are coming along smoothly, with the Elizabeth Ave. planned to be completed June 1 and the Dracup shortly after.

Garry Breitkreuz, Member of Parliament for Yorkton-Melville, is encouraging organizations that work to promote the well-being of Canada’s seniors to apply for federal funding. The 2012–2013 call for proposals for community-based projects un-

der the New Horizons for Seniors Program launched on May 8, 2012 for all provinces and territories. Organizations can receive up to $25,000 in funding per year and must address one or more of the program’s five objectives: volunteering, mentoring, expanding awareness

The dog made me do it Ed, my neighbor next door, was a bachelor last week, as Ruby, his wife, was in Edmonton for some appointments and family matters. The rainy, dull weather forced Ed to work on his machinery out at his farm. Ed takes Ruby’s cell phone to the farm in case he needs to make a call for some reason. Too bad Ruby hadn’t taken it to Edmonton with her, because Ed set it on the bench in the Quonset while he was working on his troublesome tractor and Rex, his dog, took an interest in it. Ed spotted his dog with the cell phone in its mouth. He gave a yell and dropped his wrench and took off after the dog. The dog thought it was a game and raced around inside the building and out the open door. Around the Quonset the dog went abounding – up for a game of “catch me if you can.” Ed ran after the dog in desperation. After three times around the shed, he had to stop to catch his breath and that is when the dog came and dropped the cell phone in a mud puddle near Ed’s feet. He, reacting in sheer panic, rushed to get it out the water and accidentally stepped on the phone. Long and short of the situation, Ed went to town hoping to a get a new cell phone that looked the same as Ruby’s broken one. He could not get one like it and ended up getting two new cell phones. One phone was for Ruby and one for himself. Ed thought he had a good cover-up story. He told Ruby that he got them each a new phone, so he wouldn’t have to keep borrowing hers. Ruby’s response was that he must

put here with me – she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Eve told God: “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” When we try to explain what happened, we may try to conceal how we went wrong. We don’t like to admit that things got out of control, even when we were right there. It goes against our human nature to be content with the plain honest truth that admits “I was wrong.” We hide behind what others did – even the dog. Somehow we think we can be faultless. We can fool others, but never God, because there is nothing hidden from him. He knows both what we do and why we do it.

Sacred Heart holds Bell Walk for Kids

Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) student Michaela Adam saw an ad for the Bell Walk for Kids. Thinking it was a worthy charitable activity, Adam decided to register online, received the forms and began to collect pledges. After Easter break she discussed the walk with SHHS guidance counsellor, Mrs. Kerrie Schearer. The two of them decided to organize a local event at the school, the only one in the province Adam believes. Bake sales and the sale of paper shoes on school walls were just two of the fund raising projects used to earn money for the walk. The original goal was to raise $1,000. By the end of the walk it’s estimated that the total amount raised will be at least $2,000. Everyone in Saskatchewan should become aware of the Kids Help Phone. Depression and anxiety are a big issue among high school students as well as adults and children, Adam closes.

SHHS badminton team in provincials By ALEX MORGOTCH N-R Writer Members of the Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) senior badminton team advanced to regional playoffs at Notre Dame in Wilcox Saturday. The competition was great and the games fierce. The mixed doubles team of Emily Kruger and Preston Liebrecht finished third in their pool but did not advance SACRED HEART HIGH SCHOOL students participate in the Bell Walk for Kids. The event, which raises to the playoffs. The girls’ doubles team of money for Kids Help Phone, is predicted to have raised at least $2,000. Brianna Ostafie and Eilish

Stranaghan finished second in their pool advancing to the semi-finals. They finished fourth overall, losing a closely battled match to the Esterhazy girls. The boys’ doubles team of Anthony Fetsch and Dylan Johnson also finished second in their pool, with a close three way tie. Johnson had some of his best playing at regionals, but the boys doubles still missed out, placed fourth, losing out to Melville. The team had a great season this year says coach Jim Grela.

YRHS / Cab Clothing Athletes of the Month By ALEX MORGOTCH N-R Writer The Cab Clothing Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) Female Athlete of the Month for April, Caleigh Grunert, is a Grade 9 student at YRHS. Throughout the year she participated in soccer, grade nine volleyball, where she received the Sportsmanlike award, basketball, claiming the academic award, and badminton. Outside of school she plays on the Yorkton Blitz volleyball team and

is in competitive soccer with the Yorkton United FC. This year her soccer team went on to receive gold at the indoor school provincials. Although Grunert keeps very busy she still manages to maintain a 90 per cent average. The Cab Clothing YRHS Male Athlete of the Month for April, Darren Tillman, is a Grade 12 student who has participated in several sports during his four years at YRHS. He has loved curling since he was about twelve

years old. This year being his final year of high school curling, Tillman really wanted to make it to provincials which he did. His team won gold at districts and at regionals but, unfortunately, lost out in provincials. Tillman also enjoys badminton which he picked up at Springside School. In his final year of high school, he wanted to do better than the previous year. He won four gold medals and one silver medal so far this season and recently won

gold at districts and silver at regionals held in Notre Dame. He is now off to provincials in Melfort and hoping to do well there. Other activities Tillman likes to participate in are intramurals, playing guitar, playing tennis, golfing and hanging

out with friends. His plans for the summer are to work as a maintenance person at the Good Spirit Bible Camp, and his plans for the next year are to go to SIAST in Moose Jaw for drafting school for three years and eventually find a career in drafting.

Aquasize program available Anyone looking for a low impact, high density workout is invited to try Aquasize at the Gallagher Centre Water Park. Sessions are offered six days a week. Those looking for a program with a little slower pace are urged to try the Arthritis Aquasize over noon hours three days a week.
