BIKE SAFETY – It’s Bike Safety Week in the city of Yorkton, which means it’s time to teach kids at schools across the city the importance of bike safety. Members of the Yorkton Municipal Detachment of the RCMP hosted bike rodeos at schools across the city, teaching kids safe bike practices and reminding them to always wear their helmets. Pictured, students from St. Michaels and M.C. Knoll took part in their rodeo, learning how to best keep control of their bike, watch for obstacles, use proper signals, and other practices to keep them safe on the road.

Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com doesn’t understand how I can take weeks, months and more and still be working on the same project on the list. He has looked at my list and said that I’ll never get the list done unless I put an expiry date on it. “When the date is up, throw the list out,” Ed has instructed me. Most of my DIY jobs are not exactly critical. Putting on some baseboards, putting in sinkers to hold loose screws, filling some cracks, painting the back-stairway are needful and cosmetic, but not dire or needing to be dealt with immediately. Ed said it rightly that if I wanted to do my DIY jobs, I’d have them done. He also concluded that excuses never cover up lack of motivation. Everyone does pretty much what they want to. The Bible makes it clear it is not just hearing what needs to be done but doing it. Jesus cautioned that the wise man puts what he
(Jesus) has said into practice. He pictured the person who practices his words like a man who builds his house on the rock. The house is secure in rain and flood and wind. The foolish person hears the words of Jesus, but doesn’t follow or practice them. He is like a man building his house on the sand. The rain and flood and wind destroy it. There is no point in me having a list and not doing what needs to be done on the list. Likewise, there is no point in making excuses for ignoring the words of Jesus. Jesus speaks of a man who invited people to a banquet. Those invited all made excuses why they couldn’t come. The man filled his banquet with other folks and those making excuses missed out. Each of us is challenged with doing what God says, rather than making excuses or ignoring Him.

Ed, my neighbor next door, knows I have a long do-it-yourself list that keeps growing like a fungal infection. Ed cautioned me against ever starting a DIY list, as he claimed such a list is like a legal will. The whole world can see what you put on the list and once it gets written down, it is like a life sentence to complete the list. I wish I had listened to Ed, as my DIY list has become a source of regret and shame for me. I regret admitting that so many jobs need to be done. Then, there are my recurring feelings of “shame on me” for putting those jobs off so deliberately. I can see what needs to be done, but I procrastinate instead of getting to the tasks and getting them done. The handymen on television make all DIY jobs look so simple and easy. They never have to say, “What a mess I made.” I feel like Mike Holmes is watching me when I pound nails in crooked and measure a board twice and botch it both times. The only thing I have mastered so far is writing long DIY lists of what I should be doing. Ed is pretty handy at repairs and DIY jobs, so when he gets around to them he makes quick work of them. He

How healthy is YOUR inner garden? This year, we have waited a long time to see signs of summer, but it is finally time to gather our gardening supplies! As we prepare to garden, it is a good time to think about the inner garden. Your inner garden or Biological Terrain is the fluid environment that surrounds all the 100 trillion cells in your body. Over 100 years ago, a French physiologist named Dr. Claude Bernard stated that the main cause of illness is due to imbalances within the human body. He believed that disturbances in this cellular environment affected the whole body, including the immune system. If the immune system became weakened, it had difficulty fighting disease and maintaining health. FUNCTIONS OF THE BIOLOGICAL TERRAIN The fluid that bathes the body’s cells is a very significant factor in any individual’s health. This is because the Biological Terrain has several important functions. It is responsible for delivering nutrients to every single cell in the body! Without the electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, hormones and fluid within the Biological Terrain, body cells could simply not perform their countless vital functions that maintain health. The Biological Terrain must also carry energyrich ingredients throughout the body, so that energy can be produced in the form of ATP. ATP is the type of energy that the body needs to carry out most actions and reactions. Thirdly, the Biological Terrain allows the movement of minerals from within the cells, to be filtered and disposed of by the body. Via the Biological Terrain, these minerals enter body fluids, such as blood, urine, lymphatic
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION by Dr. Gail Smolinski DNM® www.drgail.ca fluid and saliva. These fluids indicate what has been removed from inside the cells.
Several lifestyle factors can put stress on the Biological Terrain, if they are chronic. A poor diet, lymphatic stagnation, insufficient rest, excess stress, drugs, alcohol and smoking are examples of these. Chemicals and toxins in our air, food, water and environment can also create biochemical stress. These can all create deficiencies and excesses in the body that can cause varying degrees of deterioration of the Biological Terrain. If the critical balance of pH, nutrient or mineral levels or hydration within the Biological Terrain becomes unbalanced, cellular stress may occur. Over time, this may cause the individual’s health to deteriorate. He may become more susceptible to the effects of harmful bacteria, viruses, yeast and fungi. However, when cells live in a healthy Biological Terrain, they will thrive. They will be better able to resist any harmful effects of damaging micro-organisms.
throughout the world. A Biological Terrain assessment considers the pH level. This reveals the acidity or alkalinity of the body’s fluids. Many important body functions depend upon very specific pH levels. Proper food digestion and absorption, the activation of enzymes so they can do their jobs, and the binding of hormones with their receptor sites in the cells are important examples of functions that depend upon adequate pH levels. Secondly, a Biological Terrain assessment considers the level of electrons in the fluids. Specific levels of electrons are required, so that the body can produce energy, in the form of ATP. Thirdly, a Biological Terrain assessment measures the level of minerals in the fluids. Balanced levels of minerals are necessary for the body to fulfill its many functions. Levels of minerals that are either too high or too low can contribute to demineralization, stagnation or congestion. These imbalances interfere with the ability of our cells to function properly and keep us healthy! As you prepare your outside garden, remember to take care of your inner garden as well. Happy gardening!

Wheelchairs are a part of life for many people. Injuries or the natural aging process can make wheelchairs a necessity at some point. Those confined to a wheelchair oftentimes find themselves unable to get around their own homes, since many homes weren’t designed with wheelchairs in mind. Fortunately, there are a number of low-cost and little-work modifications you can make to your home to make it more wheelchair accessible. * Remove any loose carpeting or rugs. Whether you have a manual or electricpowered wheelchair, it is easy to get caught on any carpeting that might not be as secure as it once was. Similarly, rugs will more than likely get caught in your wheels. Simply removing these and replacing your carpet with new carpet that fits more snugly to the floor is a good way to make getting around a lot easier. * Replace your door knobs with levers. This will make getting in and out of your house as well as in and out of any rooms far less stressful. Door knobs can be difficult for a wheelchair-bound person to turn, but a lever can simply be pushed down and in to make access to the room easier. This is precisely the reason you’ll notice all hospital rooms have lever handles as opposed to knobs. * Install mini ramps on high door thresholds. Since many door thresholds can be high off the ground, getting a wheelchair over these thresholds can be difficult. By gluing or sealing down a few tiny wedges of wood or metal, you’re essentially making a mini ramp that will help you get in and out of your home sans help. * Install grab bars in your bathroom. Requiring help maneuvering in the bathroom can be embarrassing and one of the hardest parts of wheelchair life. You can install grab bars in your bathroom that should allow you to use the bathroom by yourself. These bars will stabilize you as you move from your wheelchair to your toilet and from the bathtub to your wheelchair and vice versa. All wheelchair-accessible public restrooms have these bars, so if you have the time, check them out to see how you can best place them around your bathroom. It is also important to note that many household doorways are too narrow for wheelchairs to fit through, so they will need to be widened. This, however, is a job best done by a professional. * Install a nonslip floor in your bathroom. Bathroom floors tend to get wet, becoming a danger for anyone, regardless of accessibility. Making your floor nonslip will greatly reduce the chances of you or your wheelchair slipping when you’re transferring from your chair to the tub or vice versa. Consider flooring tiles that are nonslip, or a durable, low-pile carpeting. * Install automatic sink fixtures. Motion-detecting sink fixtures can make operating your sink an easy process. With motion-detecting fixtures, all you need to do is place your hands under the faucet and wait for the water to come on. This negates having to reach for the sink handles. You might also want to consider

Making your home wheelchair accessible can be done with a few quick and easy renovations.
installing a pedestal sink. This reduces the amount of counterspace you’ll need to clear and opens up your bathroom even further. * Install a hose or nozzle in your shower. These can be beneficial (and easy to install) in a number of ways. A hose or nozzle system is essentially a moving shower head, meaning you won’t have to twist and turn when rinsing yourself off. Secondly, many of these nozzles have different settings, some of which perform massaging functions, which can help sooth body parts that might be aching or sore from sitting in your wheelchair or as a result of the rigors of getting around. These are also easily installed in most showers, making them an easy way to make one of life’s everyday chores more enjoyable and relaxing. * Remove gravel driveways and walkways. This can be done easily by a professional or someone who’s done it before. Gravel driveways and sidewalks make it difficult to get around. Installing a paved driveway is relatively easy and inexpensive. * Move your mailbox to make it more accessible. If your mailbox is at the end of your driveway or even attached to your house at chest level, you’ll want to move it closer to your front door and lower it to a level you can easily reach from your wheelchair. Also, you might want to consider a mail slot in your front door, but this might create problems when entering your home as you try and get yourself and your chair around your mail without rolling over it. * Buy a cordless or cellular phone. With a cordless or cellular phone, you won’t have to hurry into another room when the phone rings. Keep the phone nearby whenever you’re in the house to remove extra stress.

“Pride in Workmanship Guarantees A Quality Product”
Take concrete steps for a new outdoor look
(MS) — One of the hottest surfaces for home decorating may be just outside your front (or back) door: concrete! Much of the concrete outside of a home is gray and distinctly undecorative, but there’s no reason it has to be that way. Driveways, patios, walkways, pool decks, birdbaths and outdoor furniture can all be transformed to help define and accessorize a home and the surrounding landscaping. Here are some things to know about turning concrete from drab to fabulous. All Wet: Concrete is actually very porous. Water causes a variety of problems when it penetrates concrete and masonry surfaces, including cracking and chipping. De-icing salts and pool chemicals can also negatively affect concrete. A clear waterproofer or concrete stain will protect against damage. Come Clean: Concrete can get dirty, mildewed and stained over time. A good cleaning can make it look fresh again. Ready-to-use cleaners work much like a deck cleaner. Apply the cleaner, allow it 10 to 15 minutes to work, scrub lightly with a stiff-bristled brush and rinse with a garden hose. If your concrete is heavily stained, rinsing with a pressure washer and repeating the application of cleaner can help speed up the cleaning process. Patch Things Up: Relatively small cracks can be filled with a caulk designed for concrete. More broken areas can be filled with a concrete patching compound. If your concrete surface is
too dirty and broken for spot repairs, consider “resurfacing” the entire area. Instead of tearing out the original structure and pouring new concrete, a specially formulated top layer is applied over the existing surface. You can do this yourself, or you can work with a contractor who specializes in concrete repair. In The Clear: Once the surface is clean and smooth, it’s time to think about protecting the surface and the overall look you want to achieve. The simplest choice is a clear water repellent coating. A clear waterproofer can be applied with a brush, roller or plastic pump-up sprayer. One coat will prevent water damage without changing the appearance of the concrete surface. Put Your Stamp On It: If you’re pouring new concrete or resurfacing, you have the option to “stamp” decorative patterns into the surface before it dries. This can be as simple as using a “found” object like a seashell to make a few imprints in the corners. Also, there are stamping forms made specifically for concrete, available in a wide variety of designs. You can use these to make an entire surface resemble brick, stone or something even more exotic. You can rent or buy these stamps. Check local home centers, specialty stores and even the Internet. Color Your World: The greatest impact comes from adding color to concrete. If you’re pouring new concrete, you can have powdered pig-
ments mixed throughout the concrete, or you can dust on colored “hardeners” and then work the color into the top layer of the concrete with a trowel. Both of these approaches give permanent color. “Acid staining” is another option that do-it-yourselfers or professionals use to add permanent color to concrete. In this approach, metallic salt pigments penetrate the concrete and chemically react with it to produce mottled, natural color. The results can be beautiful, but the color choices are limited, and care should be taken since the process involves acid to help etch the concrete so the salts can penetrate. The easiest way to add beautiful, rich color to concrete is with a concrete stain. Newer stains like Concrete Care 100% Acrylic Latex Stain are easy to work with since they offer great convenience features like low odor and soap and water cleanup. This stain waterproofs and resists fading and damage from mildew, algae and mold without the need for an additional sealer. The color palette offers 40 choices, ranging from light shades like White Peach and Pistachio to darker, more elegant hues like Deep Ocean, Eggplant and Autumn Harvest. For even more decorative flair, consider using more than one color or creating fun patterns, such as simple squares or other geometric shapes. Now, whoever said concrete had to be gray?

Nonwovens: UserFriendly Wallpaper (MS) — Wallpaper once invoked cries of fear in even the most steadfast do-ityourselfer. That’s because earlier versions of wallpaper were often difficult to hang and messy. And if you made a mistake or didn’t like the way it turned out, look out — wallpaper was also a devil to remove. However, new technology is taking away much of the fear concerning wallpaper. Recent innovations have made it much easier to hang and remove. Which is causing homeowners to turn to wallpaper over paint in many applications. These innovative, easyto-hang wallcoverings are called non-woven fabric backed wallpapers, or nonwovens. Nonwovens adhere to walls with very strong force, but are repositionable during application, eliminating the “goof factor” when hanging. What’s more, nonwovens do not expand or contract due to their design, so there’s no need to contend with expansion or contraction before and after application. Once the wallpaper is hung, you have a representation of the final product and don’t have to worry about separation at seams. The advantages of nonwovens are helping these papers revolutionize the decorating industry, and many notable wallpaper manufacturers are offering variations of their own.
Nonwovens are made from environmentally friendly materials. They’re vinyl-free and breathable, with most resisting mold and mildew. Application and removal are a snap, even for novice do-it-yourselfers. While installation instructions may vary among brands, most just require the paper to be dipped into luke-warm water and hung onto the wall. Removal is just as fast: nonwovens require a dry removal that takes down large sheets of paper at one time. For anyone who has wrestled with scrapers, steamers and spray bottles and come away with wallpa-

per confetti and damaged walls, the benefits of nonwovens will be immediately apparent. Designers and industry experts are saying that nonwovens are the next generation of wallpaper. Additionally, since wallpaper can be a quick fix for problem walls or immediately add color and pattern to a room, many people are turning to nonwovens for instant design gratification, something achieved easier than priming, painting and recoating. Learn more about nonwovens by contacting your favorite wallpaper manufacturer.

Tips for upgrading bathrooms Oftentimes one of the smallest rooms in the house, the bathroom can easily be overlooked when designing for maximum light flow and style in the home. “Bathrooms are a private place, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be bright and welcoming,” says home improvement expert Don Zeman. “Many homeowners view the bathroom as their private retreat, so it’s important to pay attention to these rooms with upgrades like enhanced lighting, ultra-quiet ventilation systems and designer sinks.” Zeman, who was a contractor for 25 years before starting his nationally synThe obscure acrylic blocks in this window prodicated radio show vide privacy and natural light for the bathroom “Homefront with Don setting. Did you know…? You can ensure that your caulking bead is straight and even with this simple trick: Use masking tape to tape off the areas around the area in which you are caulking, keeping the two pieces of tape at a distance the size of the desired bead.
Lay down your bead of caulk. Use your finger to tool the caulk by pushing the excess onto the tape. After tooling, you can remove the masking tape and you’ll find a very nice looking, straight, clean, smooth bead of tooled caulk.

Tips for brightening up kitchens (MS) — For the past decade, the kitchen has reigned supreme as the choice gathering spot for family activities and entertaining. Airy, open kitchens can transform the mood of the room and its occupants. According to the experts, there are several things homeowners can do to transform their kitchens into bright, welcoming spaces, energized with natural light: Tip #1 — Adopt the popular trend of having “naked windows” in the kitchen. By using only minimal window coverings, such as valances at the top, the windows allow in more light and can act as a transition to the outdoors. Tip #2 — When remodeling, add a bay or bow window to maximize the flow of sunlight into the room and give the kitchen an expansive feeling. Constructed of three or more windows mulled together at 30- or 45-degree angles, bay windows can be made to incorporate a window seat that provides a comfortable spot for homeowners to grab a cup of coffee and curl up with a magazine. A bow window, which is created by mulling together a multitude of windows in a gentle arch, creates a gentle circular effect in a room and can offer the perfect backdrop for a kitchen table. Tip #3 — Smaller than a bay or bow window, a garden window generally sits higher up on a wall. Many homeowners position a garden window directly over a sink and grow herbs, potted plants or starter seedlings on the shelves throughout the year. Tip #4 — Order several windows mulled together at the factory to give the impression of a small “wall of windows” and to maximize light flow into the kitchen. You can request that oper-

Tip #5 — Brighten up the entire kitchen by painting your window trim bright white. Take this “whitewash” a step further and paint your kitchen cabinets white also, so that the entire room is bright and cheery, allowing light to “play” throughout the room. Selecting low-maintenance white vinyl frames for your windows will also help lighten up the kitchen.

Clean Up Before You Hit the Deck
(MS) — With spring quickly approaching, chances are you’re already envisioning putting away the winter clothes and dusting off the grill and spatula in anticipation of the season’s first party. As enticing as such an image can be, you’re likely well aware of the work that goes into readying your home for the shift in seasons. For backyard barbecue afficionados, one of the coming seasons’ biggest chores is to restore and protect your deck for the seasons that lie ahead. Whether your winter was mild or harsh, Mother Nature more than likely did a number on your deck over the last several months. So before you can throw your first bash, consider the following tips for cleaning your deck. • Be thorough: Winter throws all sorts of elements at
your deck, so be prepared to put in some elbow grease when cleaning. Algae, mildew and moss can turn a beautiful deck into a blackand-green-stained eyesore. Scrubbing will only do so much, so you’ll likely need a deck cleaner that removes such stains while simultaneously brightening your deck. Also, there are invisible factors that can affect a deck as well. For example, pressure-treated wood often falls victim to excess wax. While this is not necessarily detrimental to a deck, it can prevent adhesion should you attempt to apply a sealer to your deck before the season begins anew. A good cleaner will remove any excessive materials. • Strip the deck: Many
Before you and your loved ones can enjoy your deck this season, your first need to restore and clean it.
people prefer a colored sealant on their deck to make it more aesthetically appealing. However, stained decks often fade, creating a weathered look as opposed to a desired one. Once your deck starts to fade, simply applying a new stain won’t do the trick. First, you must strip the deck of its old stain. A number of stain and finish removers are on the market today, removing latex or oil finishes equally as well. A good stain or finish remover will also prepare the wood for reapplication. And though this might sound like quite an endeavor, it should not take very long to strip a deck once you’ve applied the remover. Oftentimes, a good product will work in less than 30 minutes.
• Protect it for the upcoming seasons: Because spring rolls right into summer, once you’ve cleaned your deck you’ll want to protect it from the pounding it’s liable to take over the next several months. Whether or not you decide to stain (or re-stain) your deck, make sure you protect it with a water-repellent finish. This protects your deck from those spring showers and also allows you to freely water any plants or flowers you may have planted around the deck without fear of damaging the wood. This is also essential if your deck surrounds a pool where water puddles are unavoidable. A good water-repellent feature will also have anti-mildew properties. That’s important, as the warm months ahead are prime periods for mildew growth.
LEDs Save Homeowners Money
(MS) — Light-emitting diodes or LEDs are gaining popularity in current home lighting concepts because of their energy-efficient nature, among other benefits. Currently, LEDs are the unsung heroes of the electronics world. These small devices make up the numbers of digital clocks, send signals from remote controls and illuminate watches and other small appliances. LEDs have been around since the 1960s, but weren’t widely used for sources of illumination for a long time because they could not produce white light, only red, green and yellow. In 1993, Nichia Chemical of Japan changed all that when it started producing blue LEDs, which, combined with red and green, produce white light. Today, LEDs are recognized as practical solutions to home lighting needs, par-
ticularly for those who are interested in efficient, cost-effective illumination. Unlike ordinary incandescent light bulbs containing a filament that can burn out, LEDs are illuminated by the movement of electrons within a semiconductor. They last long, don’t burn out and don’t get very hot when used. Additionally, because they are essentially very small light bulbs, they can be used in all sorts of lighting applications. Current white LEDs will last up to 50,000 hours, about 50 times as long as a 60-watt bulb. That can equal a dura-
tion of almost six years if the LEDs are on constantly. Because they don’t have to be changed as frequently as traditional bulbs, LEDs are very practical for hard-to-reach illumination, such as on the outside of buildings or in swimming pools. But their long-lasting properties are not the only advantage of LEDs. Although they have a higher up-front cost than incandescent or even fluorescent bulbs, LEDs are more cost-efficient in the long run. The U.S. Department of Energy has estimated that LED lighting could cut national energy con-
sumption for lighting by 29 percent by 2025. That could equal more than $100 billion in savings on electric bills for homeowners. As LED research continues and their production costs decrease, one may even see an increased use in their home application. Because the different colors of light emitted from LEDs can be manipulated to create just about any color of the rainbow, creative homeowners may think of the aesthetics involved with these lights as well as the efficiency. Sliding switches similar to dimmer switches may change the color of the lights instead of the intensity of the bulbs. This could open up possibilities for enhancing a home with colorful accents. Just think of warm tones to make a room seem more cozy, or blues to cool off a room during a hot day.

Cardinals get new pitchers Macclenny, Florida native Brad Griffis comes to the Yorkton Cardinals by way of the Faulkner University Eagles (Montgomery, Alabama). A 6’3 185 pound left handed pitcher, Griffis has mainly come out of the bullpen for the Eagles this season. However he did make one start in which he threw a complete game three hit shutout against the Cumberlands Patriots. In that game Griffis went seven innings allowing just three hits while striking out five batters. Overall (at the time of print) the versatile Griffis had a respectable 4-0 record with two saves proving he can not only start a game if need be but finish one off as well. His extend-
ed stats are as follows: 27.0 IP, 19 H, 12 R, 7 ER, 7 BB, 31 K and a 2.33 ERA. Expect Griffis to cause problems all season long for the rest of the league as he has great command over every pitch he throws. Griffis is currently a junior (next year senior) at Faulkner University studying for a degree in Sports Medicine. Griffis has previously played and studied at Gulf Coast Junior College (Panama City, Florida) in 2012 and Enterprise State Junior College (Enterprise, Alabama) in 2011. If the name Whitehead sounds familiar that’s because it should. Matt’s older brother Jamie spent last summer in a Cardinals uni-
form and would be joining his brother this season in Yorkton but for an injury to his ACL. The RHP Matt Whitehead stands at 6’3 and weighs in at 235 pounds posing quite the threat on the mound. Matt currently plays for the Douglas College Royals of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC). Despite pitching sparingly for the Royals so far this year (2.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 K) look for the younger Whitehead to be a rock on the mound for the Cardinals in 2013. Whitehead is currently in his second year at Douglas College and studying towards a degree in Sport Science.
