Health boards spur change
THEY’VE GOT SKILLS – On May 13-16, Sacred Heart High School students Brandon Parfitt (left) and Anthony Fetsch competed at the 18th Skills Canada National Competition in Edmonton, AB. Although they did not medal at the competition, there video was definitely a contender against the other provincial teams. See more on Page 6..
Saskatchewan’s Health Minister Don McMorris has announced the appointment of board members for Saskatchewan’s 12 regional health authorities – including in the Sunrise Health Region. “We continue to make meaningful transformational changes in the health system to put patients first,” McMorris says. “Regional health authority board members are integral to making that change happen. As I announce the appointment of 116 board members, I am pleased to say that 83 of them are being reappointed, which will enable continuity and continued progress toward our goal of more patientand family-centred care.” Sixty-six of the appointees are men and 50 are women, with 16 people also self-identifying as First Nations or Métis. Board members are responsible for overseeing the organization, management and delivery of health services for all residents in their health regions, primarily through the CEO of the health region. Board members
– new members appointed
are accountable to the Minister of Health. Many of those being reappointed are among the first graduates of the Health Director Education and Certification Program through the University of Regina’s Johnson/Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy. The comprehensive education program was developed in consultation with the Ministry of Health to provide extensive education and skill development to help inform board members’ decisions. Appointed to the Sunrise board are: Greg Kobylka from Yorkton (Chair); Lawrence Chomos from Esterhazy (Vice Chair); Murray Dalton, Preeceville; Gordon Gendur, Yorkton; Janet Hill, Yorkton; Doris Kopelchuk, Canora; Donald Rae, Yorkton; Dave Schappert, Langenburg; Walter Streelasky, Melville; and Shirley Wolfe-Keller, Invermay.
Sask. residents urged to beware of hantavirus With the camping and seeding season now unfolding, Saskatchewan residents are being advised to take precautions to minimize the risk of exposure to hantavirus. “Hantavirus infection is a rare but potentially fatal illness,” details Saskatchewan’s Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab. Symptoms include
fever, muscle aches, cough, headaches, nausea, and vomiting. “Individuals who develop fever, coughing and shortness of breath within one to six weeks of potential exposure should seek immediate medical attention.” In rare cases, Shahab says symptoms may get worse and lead to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a rare but often fatal illness. HPS can progress rapidly
into serious lung complications. Humans are most often exposed to hantavirus after sweeping or vacuuming rodent infected areas. The virus is transmitted by breathing in contaminated airborne particles from the droppings, urine and saliva of infected rodents. Continued on Page 3.

New student nutrition plan unveiled – Eat Well. Learn Well. Live Well. ment wants to reduce a downward trend in activity. “We’ve seen a change in what students do in life, and we’re concerned about that. The statistics that have been done about how many students are active, as far as what we would call a normal degree of activity, it’s been declining,” Krawetz emphasizes. Hantavirus warning issued Con’t from Page 1. A person can also be exposed to the virus through rodent bites, if the skin is broken, or through ingestion. Residents can minimize the risk of becoming infected with hantavirus by avoiding contact with deer mice. Farmers, grain handlers, cottagers, campers and home owners, who are most likely to be exposed, should take precautions when cleaning rodent-infested areas to prevent direct contact and breathing in of air particles that may be contaminated. This includes ventilating the building by opening doors and windows for at least 30 minutes before cleaning, using wet mopping methods and wearing gloves.
Exposure to hantavirus can be reduced by: • Blocking openings that might allow rodents to enter a building. • Storing human and animal food, water and garbage in containers with tightly fitted lids. • Keeping yards clean, and storing woodpiles above the ground and away from the home. • When cleaning a home or community, be aware of animal droppings and nesting materials, and take appropriate precautions to avoid exposure. • Dampening areas contaminated with rodent droppings with bleach disinfectant and removing droppings with a damp mop or cloth to reduce the chance the virus may become airborne. Avoid using dry cleaning methods such
as dusting, sweeping, vacuuming or air-hosing. There have been 23 cases of Hantavirus reported in Saskatchewan since 1994: four cases in 2004, one case in 2008, one case in 2010 and three cases in 2011. The most recent cases have been found in central parkland areas. For more information about Hantavirus and how to prevent infection, visit the Ministry of Health’s website at www.health.gov.sk.ca/ hantavirus and HealthLine Online at http:// www.health.gov.sk.ca/ healthline-online. Guidelines for workplaces with heavy infestations are available at: www.lrws.gov.sk.ca/ hantavirus-diseaseguidelines-protectingworkers-public.

Don’t tell me to relax – I’m in a pressure cooker! Ed, my neighbor next door, can get all steamed up, especially when it is seeding time. “Waiting on the weather so you can get started at seeding can drive a person crazy. It’s like being all dressed up with nowhere to go,” Ed explains. “When you have plenty to do and time keeps slipping away and you cannot get started, it is a problem you cannot fight except by waiting. Waiting is harder to take than open heart surgery,” Ed complains. I tend to agree with Ed in that waiting is often a pressure for me too. Ed is usually only impatient at seeding time and harvest, while I can specialize in it most times. I like to get stuff done when I want to do it and delays tend to get my blood pressure up. Since I wear suspenders because of my over ample stom-
Neighborly Advice According to Ed by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com ach, I say I often have my braces in a tangle. Others claim impatient people have their attitudes in a knot. Common sense would demand that many of us need to relax and learn the art of patience. Patience would seem to come from one’s selfcontrol. My self-control is a hit and miss affair. When it comes to cleaning up my plate, getting a haircut and changing my socks, my self-control is good. When trying to avoid any gossip, waiting in an endless line, or thinking the best about others, I may
sadly lack self-control. Self-control, the Bible explains, happens when we are keeping in step with the Holy Spirit. It is hard to face the truth that we are caught between the desires of our sinful nature and the truth and Spirit of God. Sometimes we are not willing to crucify our sinful nature. The Bible states: “The acts of our sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery, idolatry and witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions,
factions, envy, drunkenness, orgies and the like.” Our sinful nature would have us become conceited, provoking and envying each other. This is so we would destroy ourselves and others. The Spirit of God is about the forgiveness and love for ourselves and others through faith in Jesus Christ. Our faith in Christ expresses itself trough love. The life of faith may not be obvious to many others. “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” are not always valued in our world. They may even be seen as weakness, not strength. Conceit says in our minds that we do not need to be patient and forgiving toward others, because we do not need forgiveness and patience from God. Certainly,
many popular television programs celebrate our sinful nature with sexual immorality, hatred, selfish ambition, drunkenness, and envy. It seems that God is missing today – replaced by ourselves. Do we focus on getting what we feel we deserve and what we want? Perhaps in our society there has never been so much indifference toward God and being out of step with what His word and will are for us. Our patience in life does not come from our self-control. It comes from our faith in Christ. It is the fruit of the Spirit of God within us. From celebrating God’s love and forgiveness for us in Christ comes the power to fall into step with God’s Spirit of love, joy, patience, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control in our lives.

National skills comp. The Skills Canada National Competition remains the only event of its kind in Canada. It is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for young students and apprentices in the country. Every year, the event brings together approximately 500 young people from all regions of Canada, along with their parents and teachers to compete in over 40 trade and technology areas. On May 13-16, Sacred Heart High School students Anthony Fetsch and Brandon Parfitt competed at the 18th Skills Canada National Competition in Edmonton, AB. The competition was held at the Expo Centre. The two boys were a team competing in the 3D Animation event. The Saints team advanced to the National competition after winning the gold medal at the Provincial competition on March 15-16 in Regina. Anthony and Brandon were given the theme of “I am not going there” at the competition. Using that theme, they were to create a story board displaying that theme, create characters and produce a 3D animation video showcasing their talents. They had two days of competition to produce a high caliber video which was then judged by professional animators. The Saints team chose to create a video where a person walks up to two doors and has to make a choice. The first option the person opens the door and he is getting sucked into outer space. The person pulls himself back and closes the door. He then proceeds to the second door, opens it and it is a beautiful meadow with the sun shining down and a butterfly gracefully crossing the person. He sees a flower, walks toward it and goes to pick it up as it quickly shrinks and closes up. The humour behind the animation was that both doors were not a good place to go. Anthony and Brandon did an excellent job creating characters and making an animation. Although they did not medal at the competition, there video was definitely a contender against the other provincial teams.

It’s Mining Week! It’s Mining Week in Saskatchewan (May 20-26), a time to celebrate the significant contributions the province’s third largest industry makes to the provincial economy and our way of life. The week officially kicked off Tuesday morning with a launch event at the STARS hangar at the Regina airport, and will wrap up Saturday with the 44th Annual Emergency Response/Mine Rescue Skills Competition at Regina’s Evraz Place. The theme for the week is once again Mining: Investing in Saskatchewan’s Growth. “Our province is blessed with a wealth of mineral resources that have attracted the interest of investors from near and far,” says Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd. “Through sustainable development of those resources, our mining industry is creating jobs and prosperity for Saskatchewan people. It is helping us keep the Saskatchewan Advantage.” Saskatchewan’s mining industry is coming off a strong year, with mineral sales valued at approximately $8.1 billion in 2011. Companies spent $293 million last year on mineral exploration and are forecast to spend approximately $325 million this year. Potash continues to be in the spotlight among our mineral commodities, with the province’s three established potash producers spending $13.2 billion by 2020 to expand their existing mines. Other international mining companies have potash projects on the drawing board and one new mine is in development. “Mining companies are directly investing more than $50 billion in Saskatchewan operations in the next two decades,” Saskatchewan Mining Association First Vice-President Steve Fortney adds. “This translates to new investment of $6 million a day.” The Saskatchewan Mining Association co-ordinates Mining Week events, and has a number of presentations, workshops and tours planned throughout the province. “The association’s motto is ‘Mining... Great for Saskatchewan’ and during this special week that greatness is on full display,” Boyd concludes.

Crooked Lake flood claim settled
The Government of Saskatchewan has signed agreements between Canada, Saskatchewan and each of Sakimay and Cowessess First Nations to settle flood claims against Canada at Crooked Lake. Over the past 10 years, the province has been an active participant in the negotiations between the Government of Canada and the Sakimay and Cowessess First Nations. The agreement is now in the final stage and will be complete once the federal government provides their approval. “I am very pleased to have been able to sign the agreement settling these flood claims,” Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority Dustin Duncan comments. “I look forward to the final settlement once Canada approves the agreements.” Following ratification votes by band members, both Sakimay and Cowessess First Nations had signed the agreements and sent them to the province for signature. The province will now send them to the federal government as the final step in the approval process. The claims arise from flooding of land on the two First Nations caused by an Agriculture Canada dam at the outlet of Crooked Lake. Once the Government of Canada signs the agreements, it will pay compensation for past flooding of First Nations’ lands and lawful authority for future flooding in accordance with easements to be issued to Saskatchewan.

JOHN COWAN Saskatoon Saskatoo on “I really appreciate what STARS did for me when I was working in Alberta. STARS airlifted me after a car accident in the summer of 2008. It’s very exciting to know this service will be available in Saskatchewan now. STARS is going to make a big difference in Saskatchewan, especially in rural and smaller centres.”
w LARRY HUNT Moose Jaw “It is a great asset for us to have STARS in Saskatchewan and we really need the service here. I was airlifted by STARS nine years ago after my wife and I were in a car accident in Alberta. I’ve been working to help STARS ever since. We’re ecstatic about having the program in Saskatchewan now. I wouldn’t be around if it wasn’t for STARS. We are so thankful for STARS.”
