Local takes on a fight As friends and family stayed warm and prepare for the upcoming springtime break, former Yorkton cadet and Army Reservist Lieutenant Cole Janett, 24, of Bredenbury, took to the frigid spring prairies of Shilo, Manitoba, in the rolling Carberry Sandhills, to fight with 350 other Reservists from across Saskatchewan, Manitoba and North-west Ontario. From April 26 until May 3 Reservists from 38 Canadian Brigade Group (38 CBG) formed up in Shilo to take part in the ultimate war fighting adventure – Exercise Bison Warrior 2014. Colonel Ross Ermel, Commander of 38 Canadian Brigade Group, says, “We rely on our ‘Citizen soldiers’ – they have always answered our Nation’s call, performing valiantly on domestic operations such as the Manitoba Floods of 2011 and in Afghanistan. Exercise BISON WARRIOR’s aim is to hone our war fighting skills.

Saskatchewan multiple sclerosis (MS) patients now have access to a new oral medication. Beginning May 1 the province began providing coverage of Tecfidera (dimethyl fumarate) to treat adult MS patients with relapsing-remitting MS who meet certain criteria. “MS patients and specialists have been asking for coverage of this medication and our government is pleased to make it more accessible to those who need it,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan says. “This option does not require injections, and has the potential to improve the quality of life for MS patients by reducing the number of relapses they experience and slowing the progression of the disease.” MS is a neurological disease that impairs or destroys the function of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. About 3,700 Saskatchewan people are affected – a higher per capita rate than anywhere else in Canada. “The MS Society is very pleased with the news that Saskatchewan has given people living with MS in our province access to another option to manage the effects of their disease,” MS Society’s Saskatchewan Division Communication Manager Virginia Harper adds. Ready, set, go hunt! • through private licence issuers, ministry offices and select provincial park offices; or • by phone at 1-855848-4773 between 8 am and 9 pm. Hunters requiring assistance with their identification can call 1-855848-4773 to ensure they do not create a second account. Licences will not be mailed to successful applicants. follow easily identifiable features such as provincial highways, municipal roads or major water bodies where possible. Available WMZs, season dates, bag limits and quotas may have changed from previous years. Big game draw participants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new map and 2014 Saskatchewan Resident Big Game Draw Supplement before they submit their applications. The 2014 Saskatchewan Resident Big Game Draw Supplement and the new WMZ boundary map are available at www.saskatchewan.ca/ hunting.

Local takes on a challenge Con’t from Page 1. Skills such as leadership, communication and teamwork are the backbone of the military and lead to success in all operations both at home and abroad. Lt Janett has been part of the Canadian Armed Forces for four years. Asked why he joined North Saskatchewan Regiment, he commented, “embrace the ‘suck!’.” He also said what he looked forward to during the exercise – “practicing my trade!” 38 CBG deployed more than 500 citizen soldiers to Afghanistan since 2006,
and many have served in various other international and domestic operations. To maintain their morale and readiness, these experienced personnel must be challenged by relevant, progressive, and exciting training events. To learn more about 38 CBG and the Army, visit: www.army.gc.ca/en/38-cbg/ index.page The Canadian Armed Forces are always looking for strong men and women from Saskatchewan who want to challenge themselves in a meaningful parttime mission. They will experience this level of training and adventure.

Winning the Lower Denture Challenge • Do you lack confidence while speaking? • Do you suffer with sore dentures that move around? • Do you have difficulty chewing or unable to eat certain foods? Would you like to improve your oral health, ability to eat, appearance and self esteem? Unlike an upper denture, a lower denture is seldom held in place by suction creating a challenge for many denture wearers. We can now offer an easy and affordable solution to this challenge! By having as little as two dental implants placed in the lower jaw, you can receive a denture which “snaps” on and secures to the dental implants allowing you to once again eat your favorite foods in comfort and confidence.
Hundreds of our patients are successfully wearing a lower denture… And you can too!

Saskatchewan’s big game draw officially opened on May 1. Hunters must have their big game draw applications completed before midnight of May 31, 2014 when the draw closes. “The big game draw is a much-anticipated event each year and continues to grow in popularity,” Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff comments. “The number of hunters applying for Saskatchewan’s most favorable hunting opportunities has increased significantly over the last 10 years. Hunters are advised to review all available draw opportunities and past draw results to assist in making their selections. Good luck to all applicants.” All hunters applying for the draw are required to provide their Hunting, Angling and Trapping Licence identification number (HAL ID). Registration for a HAL ID is a one-time requirement; if hunters have purchased a 2013 or 2014 angling, hunting or fur licence, or applied for the 2013 draw, they already have been assigned a HAL number. Hunters can get their HAL ID, and apply for a licence several ways: • online at www.saskatchewan.ca/hunting anglinglicences;

The unforgivable – warm beer/cold coffee Ed, my neighbor next door, can be severely opinionated about anything and everything. He has more things that he considers just plain wrong than an official rule book. I think Ed missed his calling as a farmer, as I believe that he should have been a persecuting attorney. We all get carried away and act as both judge and jury occasionally, but Ed likes to do it 93% of the time. The other day I foolishly mentioned to Ed that my car and van both need to go to the car wash. Ed, instantly, said that going to the car wash is a waste of money. I should just wait for it to rain. When I asked Ed why he always has his truck looking like it came out of the showroom, he said that his truck was worth something. Since I do not have trucks, the case is closed for Ed, as he considers them junk and unworthy of serious attention. I have learned through the years that Ed has countless verdicts about the value of endless things. In Ed’s mind, many things are just plain wrong and should never happen. Here are a few of those things: meals that do not include potatoes
Neighborly Advice According to Ed

These things and others can ruin Ed’s day, and violate his sense of right and wrong. Ed has a passion in his life for what is wrong with others and this world. He is not a lukewarm kind of guy, as he tends to run hot or cold about what he sees. Ed clearly says what he thinks and is not a person of selfdoubt. It is so simple to Ed that if you disagree with him, then you are wrong. He claims that he doesn’t know everything, but he knows what is best in his mind, and if it is right for him it right for everyone. If he is served warm beer or cold coffee, Ed will spit them
“With many new MS drugs coming on the market and offering a variety of ways they can be administered, we are happy the Ministry of Health continues to be responsive in the public listing of these new therapies. As always, we encourage all people living with MS to consult with their physician to find the course of treatment most appropriate for them.” Saskatchewan is the first province among pan-Canadian Pricing Alliance (PCPA) members to provide coverage. Quebec, which is not part of the PCPA, also covers the drug. Saskatchewan led the negotiations which recently resulted in a pricing agreement between the drug manufacturer and provinces and territo-
ries. The PCPA capitalizes on the combined negotiating power of provinces and territories to obtain the best value for Canadians. Tecfidera was approved by Health Canada for use by MS patients in 2013. MS patients seeking more information are encouraged to talk with their physicians, or call the Saskatchewan MS Drugs Program at 306-
out, and he says that others should also. I once said to Ed that he had a God complex, and his response was that I was wrong and didn’t know what I was talking about. Maybe if you feel others are consistently wrong you do have a God Complex. Self-awareness, that we are not always right is a gift from God. What we think, believe and do can be settled in our minds, as good and right, but perhaps it is not so with God or other folks. As hard as it is to believe, no one but God is right all the time. The Bible says that we are to clothe ourselves with humility toward one another because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. God worked in humility as his son was born in a stable and died on the cross. The more one draws close to God’s word the less ready they become in being a judge and jury towards others.

Spray paint tips for flawless furniture updates
With the warmer weather, now is the ideal time to bring new life to home décor. Whether your outdoor items are looking worn and weathered… or your indoor spaces need a pop of colour… spray paint is the perfect solution. To ensure your furniture update goes flawlessly, follow these few tips from the experts at Krylon, the nation’s leader in spray paint. Prep Properly Surface preparation is extremely important and the best predictor of how long your finish will last. The goal is to make your surface as smooth as possible to ensure the new paint adheres well. Remove any loose rust or paint by lightly sanding. Next, clean surfaces with soap and water or degreaser, if necessary. Rinse and let your surface dry completely. Your surface should now be clean, dull and dry. To Prime or Not to Prime Primer prepares bare metal, wood, canvas or other materials to create a smooth surface for paint. It also seals the surface to help smoothen out blemishes, increase spray paint adhesion and improve corrosion resistance. While priming is a critical step, research shows that consumers only use a primer 50 percent of the time. For high-quality results with fewer steps, look for a product that says no priming is required. Choosing the Right Product It is important to choose the product that meets the needs for your substrate – as well as your style. Plastic/Laminates With the popularity of ready-to-assemble furniture made of laminates or the many plastic storage
items, these surfaces are prime targets for painting. However, without the right product, your project could turn out less than desirable. “Most consumers don’t realize that not all plastics are the same,” said Denise Patterson, Krylon product manager. “In fact, most spray paints on the market will not adhere to the most popular plastics found in furniture, toys and storage. Krylon’s new Dual
Superbond spray paint offers a unique formulation that promises quality adhesion to 85 percent of plastics, as well as hard-to-adhere surfaces, such as melamine and laminates.” Metal For metal surfaces – especially those that are exposed to outdoor elements – it is important to choose a product that provides rust protection. “Many products that claim rust protection only
work when used with an additional primer,” says Patterson. “Using a combination product, such as Dual Superbond Paint + Primer ensures that all surfaces will achieve superior rust protection without a multi-step process.” Wood Choosing the best spray paint for wood is dependent on the finish, use and location of your surface. A general purpose spray paint, such as Krylon

ColorMaster, is an ideal choice for wood. This new product offers the widest colour selection with nearly 70 colours and finishes. Spraying Specifics Before you spray, shake your can for about two minutes. Next, hold the can 6 to 8 inches away from the surface and use several thin coats of spray paint instead of one thick coat. Begin and finish your spray pattern off the object using an even side-to-side
motion, releasing the tip at the end of each pass. Try to overlap your spray pattern by about one-third with each pass. As you prepare to paint new life into your home décor, these few tips and tricks will ensure your project is painless and pretty… for years to come.
