Hospital design approved
It’s slated for completion in 2016 and it’s a facility that will benefit children from around the entire province. Work is underway towards the completion of the Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan with design development now approved. After months of intensive work, the Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan project team created a detailed design that will best meet the needs of patients and health care professionals, while incorporating detailed population forecasting to ensure the facility will meet the needs of a growing city and province. “I am very pleased to see this important step forward in our journey toward a state-of-the-art maternal and children’s hospital in Saskatchewan,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan comments. “I applaud the significant work undertaken by patients, families, staff and physicians, through the lens of ‘Patient First’. Their efforts have resulted in a design that exemplifies patient and family-centred care, and that truly puts the needs of patients first.” The work completed during design develop-
ment builds on the early design of the hospital approved last July and adds in the details such as how patient rooms and family areas will be set up throughout the hospital. When parent Tara Johnson first sat down with staff, doctors and architects to begin designing the details for the new maternal and children’s hospital, she had a long list of wants. “I was so happy to see that everything I had dreamed of, and more, was already included in the early design of the hospital,” Johnson says. “I was also so honoured that the design team took my suggestions to heart as we dove into the details. I will never forget one discussion about nursing stations and I mentioned maybe parents would like a clear line of sight to the nursing station. I had some ideas on how to make this happen and was explaining these to the team, when the architect handed me his pen and said, ‘Here, show me on the plans what you are seeing.’ I took his pen, and drew what I was picturing on the floor plan. That idea became part of the plan.” Continued on Page 2.

SCOUTING FUN – It’s an annual opportunity to have some fun and raise awareness about a longtime organization in place for the benefit of local children. Yorkton and area Scout groups gathered in the city over the weekend for a little friendly competition and camaraderie. Members took part in a treasure hunt while carrying couches around the city to draw attention in hopes of recruiting new members. Above is group from Saskatoon who travelled to Yorkton to specifically to take part in the event. Pictured back row (l-r) are: Aidan Horseman; Sam Pound; and Noel Blanchette. Children’s hospital closer to reality Con’t from Page 1. The project team spent eight months working with design teams in Saskatoon which included staff, physicians and families. Sessions had teams examining the layout of each room in the building to determine how each would be set up, from location of gases and clinical equipment to family space within the room. Teams of families also worked on the layout of the lobby and the numerous dedicated family spaces throughout the hospital. “We are very excited to receive approval from the government through the Ministry of Health and have the project reach this important milestone,” Saskatoon Regional Health Authority Chair Jim Rhode adds. “Over the past months, the design teams, including families, have given an incredible amount of energy and time to make decisions about thousands of details. Their commitment, passion and dedication to complete this phase of work have brought us a clear picture
of what this hospital will look like inside and out. It is a design that will truly reflect the cultural and regional diversity of this province. Thank you for all you have given and all you continue to give to make this hospital a reality.” To ensure the hospital truly reflected the needs and wants of Saskatchewan, the project team had reached out provincially to gather input from children, teenagers and families through classroom-based and mail-in design activities, community design sessions, online surveys and an open house. Design ideas were also gathered from current pediatric patients at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon and members of Saskatoon’s newcomers’ community. “What we learned through this phase of work was remarkable, and this input helped shape the interior and exterior design,” Saskatoon Health Region’s VP Integrated Health Services and executive sponsor of Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan Jackie Mann says.
“We learned children, teenagers and families want to feel some of ‘home’ in the building while incorporating natural light with bright colours and patterns. We also learned that what’s important in this hospital went beyond paint colours and images. We were clearly told it’s the quality of care patients and families receive, the respect they are shown and the ability to include families as part of the care team that will truly make this hospital exceptional.” Today, work continues to move the design forward for additional approvals. The new facility will sit on University of Saskatchewan lands and will border the river valley. In March, the project team received Development Review approval from Meewasin Valley Authority. The project team will also be taking
the Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan project for Development Review approval to the June 2013 meeting of the University of Saskatchewan Board of Governors. Through the rest of 2013, the project team will complete construction documents from the design plans. These will add the final mechanical, electrical and structural details and will give contractors the information they need to build the hospital. The team will also be working with staff, physicians and families to finalize the interior colours and textures. This work will provide the last details needed to create the final image of the new hospital. Construction is scheduled to start early 2014 with completion late 2016.

Fiddling champ to perform in Yorkton By DEVIN WILGER N-R Writer Fiddles are a more versatile instrument than most people believe, and Scott Woods has set out to prove it. His new Swingin’ Fiddle show takes big band songs from the 20s to the 60s and adapts them to the fiddle, as well as bringing more traditional songs and different fiddle tricks. The show will be at the Yorkton Legion on May 16. Woods says that every year is a brand new show, and this show is exciting because it’s something that hasn’t been done for fiddle very much before. He notes that taking a big band song and putting it on a three-part fiddle harmony gives it a new, sweet sound. The songs have been arranged by Woods’ sister, and he says that the main challenge was finding swing music that suits the fiddle. He says that to arrange you have to find a key that suits the fiddle, adjust the harmonies to make sense for three fiddles instead of, for instance, five saxophones. “It’s a real challenge from quite a few perspectives,” he says. The challenge is one of the things that Woods finds rewarding about playing music, and he
says that they try to show the range of a fiddle to keep it entertaining for everyone in the room. He says that keeping it fresh is a priority. “My vision of the ideal fiddle player is someone who can extend their personality through the fiddle as if it was their voice singing. It should be sweet and lyrical and just flow.” The show wouldn’t be
possible without the band, and Woods says that his band has a great feel for the swing music that is being played on the tour. The band is also a family, whether in a literal sense, as in Woods’ mother Carolyn on piano and nephew Ben on second fiddle, or just in how they feel about each other. Woods says that drummer Wes Dymond has a
great feel for the swing rhythms, and 19 year-old Emily Yarascavitch is an exciting performer. She is the third fiddle, and plays mandolin as well as being an excellent step dancer. “We have a real variety in the true sense of the variety show. Instrumentals, singing, there’s solos, step dancing, it’s back and forth a real fun mixture of sounds and sights.” When it comes to touring with family, he says it can feel like a big family
RV vacation. He says that it can be challenging to fit five people in a big bus, but that whatever happens on the road it’s all worth it when they get on stage. “Once we start to play the music, it’s fun music. It’s melodic, it’s got a groove, it’s toe tapping. The fact that you might be upset with somebody an hour ago is immediately dismissed when you start to play that music. It’s fun, it’s good music, and we try very hard to be
as professional as we can and as perfect as we can but still keep it real. It’s a very grass roots approach that we have to the music to keep the feel and the swing.” Scott Woods and the Swingin’ Fiddle Show will be at the Yorkton Legion on May 16 at 7:00 p.m.

YORKTON’S #1 USED It’s for the birds: S U E PERSTORE V I T O M O T SK. tour planned AU From June 24 to June 27, Margaret Atwood and Graeme Gibson will tour Saskatchewan’s southern grasslands in the company of other international conservation advocates. The group, all prominent figures in BirdLife International, a worldwide partnership of conservation organizations, is hoping to draw attention to the global significance of conservation programming and bird habitat at risk on federal community pastures now being transferred to Saskatchewan. The event is called “Prairie Passages.” Ms. Atwood, who will be communicating with the media and her 392,000 Twitter followers during and after the tour, has a great love for Canada’s birds and wild places, a bond she developed early in life on long canoe expeditions with her entomologist father, Dr. Carl Atwood. “The ecological value of these large tracts of unbroken prairie is internationally recognized,” Atwood says. “We have heard that 16 at-risk bird species on Saskatchewan’s most critical grasslands may be losing their legislative protection and conservation management. That concerns us, as it should concern all Canadians.” She adds, that Saskatchewan’s prairie landscapes and rich bird life is a secret too well kept. “This is a chance to help celebrate Saskatchewan’s grasslands as a destination, so we will be using social and conventional media to highlight the beauty of Canada’s publicly owned and managed grasslands.” Atwood and Gibson decided recently to make time in their summer schedule to come and see for themselves and find out what might be done to bring attention to the plight of these birds and their habitat now hanging in the balance. A film crew will be filming the tour and interviewing participants as they visit the community pastures to see the birds, while speaking with grazing patrons, pasture managers, conservationists and biologists. Atwood and Gibson have also extended invitations to Premier Brad Wall, Saskatchewan Environment Minister, Ken Cheveldayoff and Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart to discuss protecting the species at risk on these public grasslands. After their three days in the field on a privately led tour, the pair will speak at a banquet to be held in their honour at the Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina. ($100 a plate dinner, cocktails 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27; dinner served at 7:30 p.m.) The tour is hosted and co-sponsored by Public Pastures – Public Interest and Nature Canada. For more information and tickets to the dinner, go to
the Prairie Passages Tour page. Margaret Atwood is a novelist, poet, literary critic and one of the world’s best known – and best-selling – authors. A Companion of the Order of Canada, and Fellow of the Canadian Geographic Society, she has written more than 40 books, including The Handmaid’s Tale, Alias Grace, Cat’s Eye and the Booker-Prize winning novel The Blind Assassin. Her most recent novels are Oryx and Crake (2003) and The Year of the Flood (2009). Ms. Atwood is the recipient of multiple awards, medals and prizes for her writing. Among others, Oryx and Crake was short listed in 2003 for seven awards including the Man Booker Prize, the Giller Prize, and the Orange Prize, while Alias Grace: A Novel won the Giller Prize. Graeme Gibson is one of Canada’s foremost contemporary writers and editors and is the acclaimed author of Five Legs, Perpetual Motion and Gentleman Death. His most recent work is The Bedside Book of Birds: an Avian Miscellany (2005), “a wonderful collection of poetry and prose, folk tales and myths, which pay tribute to our feathered friends...” (Mail on Sunday (UK)). It was hailed by Globe and Mail as “the most spectacular bird book of the year”. Gibson is a past president of PEN Canada and the recipient of both the Harbourfront Festival Prize and the Toronto Arts Award, and is a member of the Order of Canada. He has been a council member of World Wildlife Fund Canada, and is chairman of the Pelee Island Bird Observatory in Ontario, Canada.

Why don’t people see the dumb things? Ed, my neighbor next door, likes to make fun of my passion for gardening and painting the outside of my house. In the middle of April, when knee-high snow still covered my garden, Ed yelled across the fence, “You better start painting your house, since you won’t get in your garden until the end June this year.” “It’s on my to-do list,” I told him as I stopped on my way to the garbage can in the alley. “We are going to be away in May, so I’m giving you first chance at working my garden and planting the early lettuce, spinach, radishes, and peas for me. This summer, I want to paint the bottom part of my house, but I’ll let you help,” I said. “You know I don’t garden and I spill too much paint, so count me out on both jobs,” Ed announced. “May is the wrong time to go on a trip. Why, the temperature here could be above freezing. Staying home and planting your garden is the sane thing to do,” Ed continued. When Ed heard that we were off for a week in May to China, he was downright critical. “You’re not Chinese. You don’t speak the language. Why would you spend money to go

by Raymond Maher www.accordingtoed.com to a place half way around the world and not even be able to talk to anyone there? It has to be a waste of time,” Ed snapped. “You could be right,” I answered. This reply always causes Ed to leave in a huff muttering that of course he is right but I keep on doing my own dumb things. It is a sad truth that we cannot discern our own errors until they pinch us. Our faults are out of our view. Others see the food on our face, but we don’t. In the Bible, it says, “We all stumble in many ways.” Yet we may often believe what we do and think is right, even perfect. The mistakes of others are very obvious to us, but not our own. Writer Kelly Oxford has a title, “Everything Is Perfect When You’re A Liar.” The Bible makes it clear that everything is perfect if we are talking about God, but nothing else. It is not a
matter of what I think or Ed thinks or what other people think, it is the truth of what God calls us to be and do. Jonah, in the Bible, was told to go to Nineveh with a message, as the people there needed to repent. Jonah ran away and set off in the opposite direction, because he didn’t want to do as God asked him. Jonah had his reasons for ignoring God. He hated the people of Nineveh as long-time enemies of his own people. God knew that hatred was Jonah’s problem. Jonah feared that if he called the people of Nineveh to repentance, they would repent and God would forgive and spare them. Jonah didn’t want them spared, but destroyed. God called Jonah, so He could deal with the people of Nineveh and the hate inside Jonah. We may focus on what is wrong with others, but God focuses on what is wrong with us.
