Labour legislation to see amendments

– Sask. consultations slated The Government of Saskatchewan is proposing to modernize, simplify and amalgamate labour legislation as well as explore the creation of a Saskatchewan Employment Code. “Labour legislation has a significant impact on most people in the province,” says Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan. “It needs to be easy to understand and effectively address the needs of employers and employees. Consultations play a key role in the development of this new labour legislation which will help provide context and a balanced approach to our work. We have prepared a discussion paper that includes questions on a range of issues to assist stakeholders in developing feedback and to initiate discussion.” The intent of the review is to: (1) restructure and re-organize the legis-
lation so it is easier to use and understand; (2) eliminate inconsistencies to reduce confusion; and (3) clarify which legislation applies in particular situations. Some of the topics under consideration are: essential services legislation, union financial disclosure, notice requirements, collection of employees’ wages after business closure, variable hours of work to meet needs of both employers and employees, and indexation of the minimum wage. Province invests in midwifery

As the world celebrates the International Day of the Midwife today – May 5 – the Government of Saskatchewan has announced an investment of $500,000 to ensure more women have better access to midwifery services. The funding will be used to provide additional resources over the next year to support
expansion of midwifery services in the province. The Ministry of Health will work closely with the regional health authorities to determine how to best allocate these resources. “Putting patients first is a priority for our government and the midwifery model of care is an excellent example of a patient-centred service,”
says Health Minister Don McMorris. “Health regions are able to make publicly-funded midwifery services a part of the overall maternal and infant health services available to families.” The province currently provides funding of $1.7 million annually for midwifery services. Continued on Page 3.

Tornado hunter blows in The ‘Tornado Hunter’ breezed through Melville last Wednesday to give a presentation to local students before holding a book signing and barbecue at Melville Motors. Greg Johnson was at St. Henry’s Senior Elementary School to tell students from local schools about his experiences chasing storms before heading over to Melville Motors to sign copies of his book “Blown Away: A year through the lens of the tornado hunter”. The book, which was released in March, chronicles his experiences in tornado alley and highlights some of his favorite storm pictures. Johnson is one of North America’s top professional storm-chasers and also an accomplished photographer, speaker and workshop leader. After graduating from Acadia University and founding and building a leading successful communications, marketing and advertising firm from the ground up, Johnson decided it was time to devote himself fulltime to pursuing his passion for capturing nature’s most beautiful and deadly displays of severe weather. “I am a strong believer in being unique,” says Johnson, a native of Regina, during a recent interview. “If you are not unique people aren’t interested. Finding something interesting is always a task.” To track the storms, Johnson and his crew examine a forecast model which is a computer generated technological system that looks at existing weather patterns around the world and determines what is likely to happen in the future. “When those models are all saying the same thing we generally have a good idea of what is going to happen,” explains Johnson. “Within 48 hours we have a good idea of where severe weather is going to happen.” Johnson explains that tornadoes happen everywhere but they are most predictable in tornado alley from April through June. Tornado Alley covers the Great Plains states in the central region of the United States. “Tornado Alley is the plain states, the reason we chase there is because it is easier,” says Johnson, who was leaving for a tornado chase in Colorado immediately after the book signing. “You get a lot of tornadoes in Alabama but you can’t chase their because there are
a lot of hills, mountains and trees which makes for horrible chasing and is very dangerous.” The Storm Spotter says Saskatchewan gets about a dozen tornadoes on average each year but only had three occur last year. The bigger threats in Saskatchewan are flooding and hail. Southern Ontario has a mini tornado alley and there is a big tornado alley through parts of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The tornado season is only six weeks long in Canada lasting from early July to midAugust. The states’ tornado season is all year round but a chasers main focus is April through June. Johnson travels with three crew members during his chases which include a driver, a videographer and a meteorologist so he can focus on taking pictures. “I have had lots of close calls, many have been on purpose because I specifically try to get to a certain part of the storm,” says Johnson. “I had one in 2010 in North Dakota where I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and the tornado basically chased me down the highway which wasn’t a great experience.” Being a storm-chaser, Johnson has also witnessed a lot of devastation which includes documenting and compassionately sharing the aftermath of the massive twister that devastated Joplin, Miss. in May 2011. A tornado ripped through the city of about 75,000, destroying 8,000 buildings and wiping the city clean. “It was the worst thing I have ever seen storm chasing, it’s the dark side of what we do,” says Johnson. “When we do arrive on a scene like that we go into first responder mode. It’s absolutely devastating for the people involved so anything we can do to help we certainly do that.” Having such a risky job would likely cause some grief for a storm chaser’s family but that hasn’t been the case for the Tornado Hunter. “My wife loves it, she has always been very supportive,” says Johnson. “She is an entrepreneur as well who has her own business, so she gets that component of it. My kids think it’s pretty cool, all of them have an adventurous spirit but I don’t know if they will be particularly interested in storm chasing.”

This funding is allocated for midwifery practices in the Saskatoon, Cypress and Regina Regional Health Authorities, to support the regulatory function of the Saskatchewan College of Midwives, and to provide bursaries to students enrolled in midwifery education programs. The province will also continue to work to recruit Canadian and internationally-trained midwives to Saskatchewan, through bursary programs and support for assessment programs such as the Multi-jurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Program. It is expected that midwifery services will be expanded throughout the province as more midwives are licensed and able to provide services and as resources become available. Midwifery services first became available in the Saskatoon area in January 2009 and have since expanded to Regina, Swift Current and All Nations Healing Hospital in Fort Qu’Appelle. There are currently 11 midwives registered to practice in the province, and more than 580 babies have been delivered by midwives since the service was established. Midwives work as specialists in normal birth. They provide women with another option for the management of their pregnancy, delivery and post-partum care of their children. Midwives can apply for privileges to do deliveries in the hospital or, if appropriate, can do deliveries in the comfort of the client’s own home. For information on midwifery services in the communities where these services are available, residents can contact their health region.

Ed exercises his rights and freedoms Ed, my neighbor next door, has been having the worst kind of tractor trouble out at his farm. The engine won’t start and the payments won’t stop. Ed tends to fix and service his own machinery as much as possible. The thought of needing to pay to get his tractor healthy again has Ed clutching his wallet under his pillow each night in troubled sleep. Ed has the right and freedom to service his own tractor himself to save money, but he is also has the right and freedom to pay someone else to do it if he cannot keep it running. Ed also has the right and freedom to sleep with his wallet under his pillow. He says he knows where his money is at all times, as he is either sitting on his wallet in his back pocket or sleeping on it. He has his wallet covered night or day. Ed’s wallet is important to him because the money in it is his own. It seems to me we all treasure what is important to us. The Bible says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” I once said to Ed that he might want to be careful because his heart might be stuck right with his money in his

It is just that what we make the priority of our life (making and having money) may become our master. Money is meant to serve us, but it can steal our hearts and become our treasure that can be lost, stolen or destroyed no matter how we try to protect it. I asked Ed if he ever considered that money was not meant just for ourselves, our own spending and saving, but also to be used to help others in need. Ed said his money is for
himself and his own spending and saving – I was free to give to others, but he had a right to keep his money for himself. This is, of course, true. The Bible says it this way, “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Paul said this to Christians at Corinth who had the opportunity to give money for a collection for relief of fellow Christians suffering from a terrible famine. When we give to help others it is because at the present time we have enough to give to help supply what they need. There could well be a time when we may need someone to give to us to help supply our needs. Giving to others not only helps them but it expresses thanks to God for giving us our money. We have our money because of God’s generosity towards us.

Burndown delays resistance
Growers have been warned for years that the glyphosate resistance found in other parts of the world would soon spread to Canadian fields. And the predictions have come true. Agriculture Canada has added kochia, found in Southern Alberta, to a growing list of glyphosate resistant weeds in Canada. Agriculture Canada’s recent discovery leaves no doubt that these weeds are here and here to stay but weed scientists agree that resistance can be delayed with good management strategies. By using herbicides with multiple modes of action and controlling weeds early in the season, growers can help avoid resistance from developing. Early season burndown herbicide applications are extremely important and will not only help delay resistance but will help protect yield. This year’s mild winter will give weeds a head start. Delaying a burndown herbicide application or skipping it altogether can make planting in fields of tough weeds more difficult and can inhibit crop emergence and growth. Growers who are using glyphosate alone in a preplant application will need to wait over a week to see results and even then they may not get the results they are looking for because of resistance. “Using herbicides with multiple modes of action and from different chemical groups are critical to managing resistance,” says Robert Hornford, Technical Development Specialist with BASF Canada. “Tank mixing a Group 14 product like Heat with glyphosate gives growers a faster burndown than with glyphosate alone and will give growers the cleanest possible start.” Many growers are wondering if applying different herbicides truly is the solution to resistance and if an increased rate of glyphosate would provide the same results. With the number of new cases of resistance growing, increasing the rate of glyphosate without adding additional modes of action will not help combat the problem for the long-term. Since 2000, 21 cases of glyphosate tolerance have been reported. While there are only three cases of glyphosate tolerance in Canada, researchers expect that the number will continue to grow. Growers without a doubt need to alter their practices now if they want to avoid a larger problem down the road.
MS Awareness Month Multiple sclerosis is a complex disease that affects each person differently. During MS Awareness Month, people touched by MS join together to raise awareness and support for the cause. While the majority of people living with MS are diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), more than half will develop secondaryprogressive MS within 10 years of their diagnosis; and 90 per cent will develop progressive MS within 25 years of their diagnosis. This May, the MS Society of Canada is raising awareness about MS, the most common neurological disease affecting young adults in the country. “MS is a very hard thing to get beyond. My life right now is so different from what I thought it would be,” says Michelle Amerie, an MS Society volunteer who developed progressive MS in 1992. “My advice to people diagnosed with MS is to do whatever it is that makes you feel alive. There are a lot of people that will help you
go on, and there are a lot of supports that you can tap into.” The MS Society also offers services to people affected by MS that can help them maintain their quality of life and deal with the issues related to the disease. There are 1 out of 4 people in the USA and 1.4 million in Singapore, 9.8 million people in the UK, so membership in Yorkton Co-op in the various communities we serve shows that we are part of a worldwide movement for the betterment of co-op members. Yorkton Co-op has operations in food, fuel, crop inputs, and hardware with locations throughout Yorkton, Kamsack, Theodore and Ebenezer. Our quality products teamed up with our superb customer service make us a preferred retailer in all of the communities we serve. Yorkton Co-op’s continuing growth and development for the benefit of our members is a priority for your board of directors, management and employees. We are a locally owned and operated business, owned by the members in Yorkton and surrounding area who share in the profits, services and benefits of Yorkton Co-op. We are extremely excited to announce our record results for the year ending January 31, 2012. Sales exceeded $81.3 million dollars and our net savings was more than $5.4 million dollars. This year, the allocation of member’s equity is as follows: Food – 2.5% Agro – Petroleum – 8.5% Agro – Other – 1.0% Gas Bar – Other – 2.0% The Board is very pleased to announce that we have approved a cash repayment in excess of $1.5 million dollars for 2011 operations and the cheques were handed out April 23-27. All remaining cheques that were not picked up will be mailed out.
